Another clue

One more night of clues for us Europeans (translate to your time zone). Here’s what Martin has to say:

A Lighter Shade of Pale
Thrice nominated, once victorious. A double threat. He wrote the script for his own wedding. Has struggled against the Spider’s sort, taken on Santa, caught a tiger by his tail. Never reads the same book twice. Last seen dancing home.
Hear Me Roar: People are already guessing this could be for Roose Bolton! The clock is ticking … I’ll be checking back in the morning to see the results.

Also, the song is “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” not a “lighter shade of pale.” I googled the phrase “never read the same book twice” for the heck of it, and I got a quote from someone called Edmund Wilson from his book “The Triple Thinkers.”

Michael McElhatton is both an actor and a screenwriter, i.e. a “double threat”.

He did write the script for a documentary called “The Brides of Franc” for Irish TV, which he narrates as himself. Not sure what, if anything, that has to do with his own wedding. Not even sure he’s married at all.

According to WikiPedia (FWTW), he did act in a play called “Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs” for the Battersea Arts Center, i.e. the ilk of Varys “the Spider”.

On the other hand, McElhatton was nominated a total of 6 times for an IFTA award (3 x for acting in a TV production, 2 x for scripts and 1 x for acting in a movie). He did win for acting in a TV production once, but perhaps this is a shaky fit for the awards clue.

The wedding clue has already been explained- he wrote and was in a piece called Fergus’s Wedding. Also, it’s not a shaky fit for the awards clue, it’s a good one- he’s been nominated three times for acting on TV and he won once. Every other clue fits him to an absolute tee, I don’t think there can any more doubt.

Personally I always imagined Robert Pugh as Roose Bolton. He fits GRRM’s description: Square face, slightly pudgy features, pale eyes, and otherwise bland, uniform features. He can do creepy.

Another favourite is Robert Patrick, even though he’s American. He used to be a thin dude (eg., Terminator 2), now he’s filled out a bit and aged nicely, and he has got really pale eyes. He also has that mean, penetrating, slightly sociopathic stare that fits Roose perfectly.

    Josh Parker,

Oh I agree, looks are the be-all-end-all of casting… and in some roles they are one of the least important aspects.

I do however feel that some characters looks feed into who they are as a “person” and their spirit. Brienne was one. They absolutely had to cast a tall woman. There are more than a few others where their stature is part of the role – Gregor The Mountain for sure and his brother Sandor to a lesser degree… etc.

Other characters are so average in appearance anyone can play them with a little help from the wardrobe, make-up and wig departments.

I’m not sure where the Boltons fall honestly. I think their personalities are the biggest casting issue. Roose can be “lightened” with make-up if need be and Ramsay doesn’t necessarily need to be fleshy, pale and have wormy lips. As long as the actor can pull off cruel and sadistic I think they could do the role – even if they did not fit the description.

That said, when I picture the characters as I read, I picture them how I visualize GRRM’s descriptions, so of course appearance plays into who I imagine in the role as I read. Honestly though, who’s to say I didn’t imagine a character polar opposite to how GRRM imagined him as he wrote.

Mr. Martin needs to confirm this already…. so we can move on to the next Froggy clue ! :)

Wow, if actually does turn out to be Michael McElhatton – this is pretty much the guy I visualized when I read the books. He has the perfect disposition for the role – and the eyes, oh the ice cold eyes. Brilliant casting choice.

ACoK: Chapter 64 (excluding the prologue)/ Arya 10 – “[Roose]Bolton turned a few more pages with his finger, then closed the book and placed it carefully in the fire.”

It was bothering me and I had to go find it.

This is just ridiculous – Burth, you solved this one so fast that it isn’t even fun to read throught the ‘how did they get to it’ part! There is no such part! :-)

Looks like another solid casting for the second season – so far I’ve loved almost all of them, great work Nina! (although, of course, I reserve the right to complain on any single one of them when the second season airs…)

(Btw, thinking of the connection they have with Cunningham and McElhatton, it makes me foolishly hope that we will also get Brandan Gleeson and/or Cilian Murphy in Got, but surely they couldn’t… Or could they?)

And also, both jon and dany’s storylines in ACOK are kinda slow, (lot of travelling, almost nothing happens) so IMO they have to expand them somehow. Dany’s expecially now that i think about it. She has something like 5 chapters in ACOK, doesn’t she?

    sarah,
I’d love to see Julian Sands in there too. I see him as Arthur Dayne (older or younger depending on the time period) but at 53 he’d be a fine Blackfish. Physically different enough from both Ser Rodrik and the Greatjon, and able to convey both kindness and threat.

The pale eyes fit Bolton and he has that angular face that can look gaunt easily….
The coloring and upright demeanor fit Dayne quite well too, but since they removed the ToJ (at least so far) I’m not sure we will ever see The Sword of the Morning……..

I suppose he makes the most sense as Ramsey (all though I think Ramsey is described as a big guy) I’d rather see him as more of a good guy though. He can be so heartbreaking and since he’s not playing Cinna in the Hunger Games like he should be (sorry Lenny Kravitz) he’s got time for this.

I know that’s the role he wants, but he can’t seriously have ever thought he’d actually get it? Not only is the role fairly major, so they’ll want someone with a solid resume, but he’s also at least a decade (probably more like TWO) too young for Mance. Mance is a character where his age matters.

A couple of the faces he’s made in his videos have been kinda creepy, and put me in mind of the Boltons.

As for the comments that GRRM only announces the small roles…that’s just simply not true.

For the first season a great number of major roles were clued by him, the only real exceptions being Dinklage, Addy, Bean, Harington, Gleeson and all those announced in the major casting announcement by HBO who hadn’t already been clued to us yet.

This season he’s given us clues for Brienne, hardly a minor role, and I don’t think anyone could suggest that he’s a more major role than Brienne.

It’s obviously Len Lesser (Uncle Leo fro Seinfeld) as Stannis Baratheon.

    Clues:

    - “A Lighter Shade of Pale, Double Threat” : Procul Harem’s signature song is 44 years old. DOUBLE that and it’s 88, which is how old Uncle Leo is.

    - “Thrice Nominated, Once Victorious” : Nominated three times for “Employee of the Month” during his time on Seinfeld, but only won once.

    - “Wrote the script for his own wedding” : Played the part of “Peppy Miller” in the hit TV-series “Wedding Bells” and did uncredited rewrites on the script

    - “Has Struggled against the Spider’s sort” : Was in “The Amazing Spider-Man” TV pilot

    - “Taken on Santa” – Played “Rabbi Rosenbaum” in the seminal TV Series “Platypus Man.”

    - “Caught a Tiger by his tail.” : Destroyed Tiger Woods in an unsanctioned cagefight last May in Thailand. I was there.

    - “Never reads the same book twice.” : Played “The Greek” in “How I Spent my Summer Vacation.” It’s a well known fact that Greeks do NOT read the same book twice. Ever.

“Last seen dancing home.” – Hmmm, this one doesn’t really fit. Beats me. Maybe it’s not him.

    Kevin Brierley,

    That would be interesting!

Alex: Personally I always imagined Robert Pugh as Roose Bolton. He fits GRRM’s description: Square face, slightly pudgy features, pale eyes, and otherwise bland, uniform features. He can do creepy.

    Nice instincts!
