On Saturday night, Game of Thrones bagged its first award (and that’s “only the first of many courses”, we hope and believe). The Television Critics Association, comprising about 200 US and Canadian journalists, proclaimed Thrones the best new show of last season, placing it ahead of all its fellow nominees in the category: Boardwalk Empire, Terriers, The Killing, and Walking Dead. The transcript of the presentation of the award has been made available by Daniel Fienberg (thanks to the reader Scott for pointing it out!). Read the full results, and about the ceremony itself, on Mo Ryan’s blog, where you can find one of the several reports from the event published in the past couple of days. A reponse from the man himself has likewise been put forth.
Next up, we can expect the results of the internet-based Portal Awards (the longest running SF&F awards) soon, while the final round of Tubey Awards is in full swing (vote for new categories each Monday for the next month). And then … on to the Emmys in September!

Rock and Roll!!
I may actually watch the Emmy’s this year!

Terriers deserved to win.
R.I.P. :(

That is so awesome and well deserved! I am thrilled with what D & D have done this seasone and look forward to surprises from them next season. I, for one, am excited when they blend books, add characters, or scenes. It makes it seem new to me again. BRAVO!!!

Beating Boardwalk Empire, very nice. Best win of the night: Nick Offerman, that man is a legend!
KnurkQuote Reply
Loved that guy’s intro.
If not for Game of Thrones, I would agree with you. Terriers really was a great show that deserved to be on the tube for many more seasons. Instead, it joins a long list of shows that had one really excellent season before untimely cancellation (Firefly, Wonderfalls, Freaks & Geeks, and so on…).

Congratulations to George R. R. Martin, David & Dan and all the actors.

Is there even gonna be any competition at all for those Portal Awards? Hell no! :-)

Anybody know anything about the prospect of a Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation? That’s less than a month away.
Maester_TcostQuote Reply
Maester_Tcost,
I think not this year. The nomination deadline for 2011 was already in March.

Amazing. I still think GoT is an Emmy underdog because of the whole Scorsese thing. But Boardwalk Empire pales in comparison. I hope the Emmy voters open their eyes rather than voting via reputation.

The award presentation transcript is hilarious! Here it is for those too lazy to click on the link above:

Great news! I was a little shocked to see that the ratings for GoT were not quite up to par with other pay-tv series like Boardwalk Empire and Sopranos, but this makes up for that!
JohnnyDingoQuote Reply
I didn’t see Terriers, but I saw Boardwalk Empire, Walking Dead, and The Killing (as well as Camelot) and as good as those shows were GoT was by far way better. I can’t wait for season 2.

Hmm. Got lost both best drama to mad men, and best overall to FNL, only to win an award that is not represented under the Emmy’s. Beating BE is a good sign, but overall it doesn’t indicate that much for the future…
salukQuote Reply
Let me add my voice to those in support of the show “terriers”. That was a brilliant show and kudos to the tca for giving it some recognition. It is kind of weird comparing game to terriers though, apples and oranges if you ask me. I guess, in conclusion, I’m super happy game won, but would have been equally happy if terriers did.
Maybe we can get michael raymond james in the cast? Not sure how he’d do in the fantasy world, but I would watch that man in just about anything.
JillianQuote Reply
SO happy it beat The Walking Dead.
LexQuote Reply
Lets just hope it can beat Boardwalk empire at the Emmys too, then. …and Mad men.
Either way: Great to see that GOT continues to be somewhat of a critics pet. HBO loves this, I know.

No one seems to have noticed, but GRRM has a new casting clue,
Across the Atlantic Sea.
From England, England hails this fellow, an ideal choice. He’s been a madman, a nut, a spud, a martian, a king, and a slaver, he’s gone up with a balloon and down with a ship. But why he is so sad when he’s stroked so many women?
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
Casting clues! YEEHAW!
LexQuote Reply
Maybe “Across the Atlantic Sea” = Across the Narrow Sea?
Or the sea is a hint to Balon? – I have no idea… this is gonna be tough…
AbyssQuote Reply
Grimtuesday,
Hmmm, Bernard Hill went down with the Titanic and played King Theoden, but I don’t know about all the other stuff.
Arrogant BastardQuote Reply
Jim Broadbent!
He was in “Around the World in 80 Days” (up in a balloon) and apparently played the Dad in something called Anna Spud (he was a “spud”)…
LexQuote Reply
Any clue as to what role, though?
LexQuote Reply
Craster? Stroking women – ugh.
knowsomethingQuote Reply
Lex,
I’m guessing this is for Balon, just because of the mention of sea and it is probably an older actor.
Arrogant BastardQuote Reply
But across the Atlantic Sea? You don’t need to go across the sea to get to Pyke. He already said the actor is English, he doesn’t need to affirm that by saying across the atlantic sea.
It’s just too suspicious…
SherritQuote Reply
“So sad”… maybe he’s the sorrowful man assassin?
LexQuote Reply
Christopher Plummer? :D He was in Up! I need to search a little more…
SherritQuote Reply
I also came to the Jim Broadbent conclusion. I can’t think of what role he’d play tho.
ssgorikQuote Reply
Lex,
Would fit with my “Across the Atlantic Sea” = Across the Narrow Sea-idea.. But I don’t know… it’s just to airy…
AbyssQuote Reply
Would LOVE to see Jim Broadbent, not sure what he would play though
CharlesQuote Reply
I think the actor might be a knight, note the “England hails him” part of the clue.
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
Gauephat,
Loved Terriers
OldGranQuote Reply
Why did he repeat England twice? I don’t know what to make of “ideal choice.”
knowsomethingQuote Reply
I think it means he hails from “England, England” which is a sci-fi novel, as far as I can tell.
LexQuote Reply
Pretty sure that “Across the Atlantic Sea” and “from England, England” are a reference to a song in Hair. “Manchester England,” sung by the character Claude.
Kind of wondering if it might be the original London cast actor who played Claude — Paul Nicholas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Nicholas). I see King Arthur among his other credits, at the very least.
And if he’s sad, maybe Dolorous Edd?
falconesseQuote Reply
Linus Roache?
LeahQuote Reply
Lex,
I looked at the wiki page for that, but none of the names seemed to line up with an actual person.
I still think it refers to the actor having been given a knighthood. “England hails this fellow”
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
I think you’re right, sounds like lyrics from a song from Hair…
Which somehow led me to Tim Curry, who was in the UK cast of hair.
He’s played kings, he was in a version of Titanic for TV, he played a character called “madman” in something, was in something called “robots of mars” (martian?)…
LexQuote Reply
Lex,
As awesome as he would be, he seems to be pretty busy.
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
Rhys Ifans as Crastor?
Danny Deckchair and Pirate Radio. Trying to figure out the Martian thing though.
mcguffin1899Quote Reply
Tim Curry was in a Titanic miniseries too!
SherritQuote Reply
Falconesse, a lot of the clues could work, he played King Arthur, he stared in a version of the Nutcracker, he seems to be a judge in some of those American Idol like shows (ideal choice.) But what about going up in a balloon and playing a Martian? I’m really stumped on the Martian part.
knowsomethingQuote Reply
What about the “spud” clue… or the “nut”… and the balloon and the martian… argh!
LexQuote Reply
Tim Curry was in Earth 2 as what appears to be an alien. alien/martian?
revelator41Quote Reply
Curry was also King Acorn in the Sonic Tv show. Acorn = nut?
revelator41Quote Reply
knowsomething,
I’m looking at the reference on the wiki page to him writing and singing “That Ain’t No Crime” for Rocky Horror, and for some reason am thinking that the guests at Dr. Frank’s party (which I think is when that song is sung?) are somewhere referred to as Martians. But it’s been years and years since I’ve seen Rocky, so that could be an incredibly faulty memory. Google-fu isn’t helping my case on that one.
falconesseQuote Reply
Tim Curry would make a cool Pyat Pree warlock, no?
LexQuote Reply
Tim Curry was also in a Barbie version of the Nutcracker as the Mouse King…that’s martian, nut, the ship AND balloon (Dream Balloon’s Animated Short Starring Jim Belushi & Tim Curry)… he was a Pirate king and King Arthur… and was in Spamalot, and Spam is made from potato starch (spud). He was a slaver – Slagar the Cruel.
That’s everything besides the stroking women part…
SherritQuote Reply
Lex,
I see him as Dolorous Ed!
AbyssQuote Reply
Paul Nicholas seems to be gearing up to direct and produce a touring version of a play starting in a few weeks, per Wikipedia. It seems unlikely that he’d take time out to be acting right now.
BlueCanaryQuote Reply
Ewen Bremner, the guy who played “Spud” in Trainspotting, was also in Around the World in 80 Days… and he’s played a king.
LexQuote Reply
You guys are on the right track with “Hair,” GRRM now has “hair” listed as his Music under the not-a-blog entry.
TallhartQuote Reply
mcguffin1899,
He played a guy who dealt in sex trafficking (a slaver) in Hannibal Rising, and MacBeth (a king) in some TV short.
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
Tim Curry was in The Scoundrel’s Wife with John “Spud” McConnell.
revelator41Quote Reply
i want jim broadbent!!!

Apparently there was a British sketch comedy show called “Man Stroke Woman”, with Nick Frost among other actors.
LexQuote Reply
Ben Crompton (played in a show called Ideal, a show called Man Stroke Woman, a show called The Balloon, a show called the Slavery Business, a show called the Sinking of the Laconia about a sinking ship, played someone with the last name Nutt, someone called Mad Al, someone called Martian X, King Mike… and someone called SPUD!)
I think I got it!
LexQuote Reply
Tim Curry matches up so well, but he’s filming two movies right now.
SherritQuote Reply
Ben Crompton.
I hope I’m right, it would be the first time I ever guessed a casting clue.
LexQuote Reply
Ben Crompton seems to match up quite nicely.
SherritQuote Reply
Lex,
And he played Claude Truffaut in a TV movie called The Outsiders.
I think you might have it.
ETA: He’s also from Manchester, England (England). Everything fits.
Now, who’s he playing!?
BlueCanaryQuote Reply
That’s got to be it. Now what’s the role?
revelator41Quote Reply
Lex,
I am with you:
–> “ideal choice”
AbyssQuote Reply
It was the “man stroke woman” that finally helped me find it. They have a rather small cast.
LexQuote Reply
Crompton is also from MANCHESTER!
Bingo bango Lex, you got it!
I’m thinking Dolorous Edd, i.e. “why is he so sad?”
TallhartQuote Reply
He’s also on a show called “Ideal”.
revelator41Quote Reply
So it is Ben Crompton as Dolorous Ed, right?
AbyssQuote Reply
Yes, Ben Crompton was also in something called Ideal, but what’s the role?
knowsomethingQuote Reply
knowsomething,
“Ideal” is just a play on words – the clue to the role is ‘why is he so sad?’ Who’s sadder than Dolorous Edd?
TallhartQuote Reply
Lex, you should post a comment on GRRM’s not a blog and see if you are right.

congratulations!
and you got it before Wic & company even made a post about it!
