In a nice bit of alliterative casting news, both Podrick Payne and Pyat Pree have been cast in season two of Game of Thrones. Access Hollywood got the Pod scoop, young actor Daniel Portman has been cast to play Podrick Payne.
Access Hollywood can exclusively reveal that actor Daniel Portman has been cast as Tyrion’s squire, Podrick Payne.
Podrick is actually in the first book in author George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, but was not shown in Season 1 of the HBO series.
He becomes an invaluable ally to Tyrion as the imp becomes the King’s Hand in Season 2.
Portman appeared in the 2010 horror film “Outcast,” alongside “Dr. Who” star Karen Gillan. He also has a small role in the upcoming 2012-due film, “The Angel’s Share.”
Westeros.org has the second piece of casting news, they report that British actor Ian Hanmore will be playing the role of Pyat Pree.
Pree is a mysterious warlock from Qarth that attempts to win Daenerys to his cause. Hanmore is a veteran TV actor with appearances on Doctor Who, Life on Mars, Outlaws and Shameless.
Winter Is Coming: Pod! Glad to see everyone’s favorite squire has made the cut. This kid looks perfect for the role. And the guy for Pyat Pree looks different than the one in my head, but no worries, I’m sure he will be fine in the role. Welcome to the cast Daniel and Ian!

Looks good casting for both.

Perfect Pod.
Ian Hanmore is older than I pictured Pyat Pree. That’s about the first casting decision that I think might not work out. He has some good shows on his CV but none of them are especially large or meaty roles. I guess we’ll see.

Yay for Pod, but darnit where are my Reeds? I hope they make the cut.

Yay, Pod!
I was afraid that he wouldn’t be in, based on the “you don’t have a squire” in the Green Fork battle in S1. Thought they’d make that a running joke.
I’m also glad they aged him up a bit. In my mind he was always pictured as a ~14 year old teenager and not the 10-year old that was actually in the books.

Hurray! More comic relief characters are always welcome. :) ….Plus, he’s another Scotsman! Wooot…!

How old is this Daniel Portman? Any more pics?
It’s pretty crucial to Pods role that he be (Edit: actually – looks) young enough. I don’t really see an 18 year old act the way Pod does.

Pyat Pree isn’t really a large or meaty role either, in all fairness.

Cast Podrick Payne and cut out Edmure Tully? The only thing Pad does is save Tyrion! Anyone could save him in the show. Bronn could save him! While no one can fcuk things up nearly as much as Edmure.

Still, he looks exactly like I pictured him, so good job on casting him (as always).

ralia,
I lay the blame for Tywin’s relief of King’s landing at the feet of Robb and Brynden, personally. Edmure’s actions were reasonable based on the information he had. If Robb had pulled his head out of his arse and actually trusted his uncle, his plan might’ve worked; it was his mistrust that cost him the chance to draw Tywin’s host into the west.

Yay Pod!! I thought he was going to be cut too.
I am wondering if they might put off introducing the Tullys to season 3 somehow, but after Catelyn’s done treating with Renly and returns with Brienne to release Jaime, I’m not sure what else she’ll have to do.
They might move Ygritte back to season 3 too, but I hope she’ll get cast.
StarkgirlQuote Reply
ralia,
No, he also has a large role in the Brienne plot in Book 4. I think GRRM has big plans for him. They were wise not to cut him.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
So, this basically confirms Qarth as a multi-ethnic city, right? This makes a certain kind of sense, given that Quaithe is one of the representatives and it’s a major hub of trade.
Does this mean that Xaro Xhoan Daxos will be a merchant prince from the Summer Islands or somewhere who has merely made his name and fortune in Qarth? Or did Pyat Pree travel to Qarth in order to join the warlocks? Or are they both natives of a city that has cultures from all over who have been there for generations? What will the various extras of Qarth look like?
I’d be interested to know both where people like HBO is likely to go with this and what people would prefer. Personally, I don’t really mind which it is, I just hope that the multi-ethnic nature of Qarth is explained, if only in passing.
darrylzeroQuote Reply
darrylzero,
XXD makes a fairly big deal about it being a major port and trading hub, which I would consider explanation enough.
Though I am pretty keen for another argument about race. I haven’t had my white privilege thrown in my face since the XXD casting thread :D

Thank the Seven- we have a Pod!! I was getting worried that Pod would get cut from the show. Hopefully, we will have news on the Tullys, the Reeds and Ygritte very soon.
Who else are we missing? It would be cool to have Dany meet the Cinnamon Winds crew this season. They are important later on. I’m up in the air on if Pia from Harrenhal will be in the show. It depends on if her character expands further in TWOW.
winterqueenQuote Reply
House Lark,
As someone said, Pyat Pree is not exactly meaty, either. He has to be creepy for a few scenes–and from what I saw of him on Doctor Who, he can definitely do creepy. (He played an evil monk that worshiped an alien werewolf–which sounds a lot more ridiculous once I type it out.)
theamberkeyQuote Reply
darrylzero,
I 100% agree. I was hoping that they would have Africans cast as the entire city, but had make up on so they would have a pale complextion. It would make the city seem more strange, like the black guy at the end of the Katy Perry video. Lets hope they explain why there is just a random character in there
RaulQuote Reply
Raul,
A “random character” ?
What does that even mean? A major trading hub and port city can’t have more than one ethnicity without some kind of explanation? o_O

Now the only question is whether he will be really quiet, like in the books, or will he be barking all over the place?
the goatQuote Reply
Well, I wasn’t expecting Pyat Pree to be white…. I was expecting black/African. If they’re casting Pyat Pree and Xaro, I really hope this means there’s hope for Tully’s being cast at least in later seasons. I mean, they could have easily shrunk the roles of Pyat and Xaro into one character…, whereas you would expect in Riverrun to see several of Cat’s family members. If we ever see Riverrun.
Good to see Pod cast. Can someone explain why everyone blames Pod? Is this something from the book?

I completely agree. I am rereading SoS right now and when I came to the chapter where the original plan was revealed, it was a real head-scratcher moment. I can’t imagine a good leader making the assumption that Edmure would just sit idly by while Tywin’s troops marched past. If it was such a crucial piece of the war strategy Robb shouldn’t have kept it a secret for no logical reason other than to create a plot point.

I like the casting of Pod! I know in the books he’s said to be a “boy,” but I always pictured him as this gangly teenager, and it seems to me Portman can play that. Plus as a squire he’s expected to haul around armor, weapons, heavy gear, all that. So he can’t be like a ten year old.
… Okay, actually that would have been pretty funny.
Qarth being a multi-ethnic city, I’m fine with Pyat Pree being any race, so long as his lips are blue.
Fire And BloodQuote Reply
Pod isn’t how I pictured him, but there aren’t many photos to go on and I’m sure the actor will be great when we see him. Like many people, I’m just excited he’s in, since he’s one of my favourite characters and one a lot of people seemed to think would/could be cut. The major elements of Pod’s character are mainly conveyed through body language and dialogue anyway though, so appearance isn’t a big deal.
I’m glad he’s in. It actually gives me more hope for the Tullies for some reason, haha.
Steve Hugh WestenraQuote Reply
Daniel Portman’s dubious look in that photo makes him seem highly suitable for Pod to me.
If they use Pia, and I think that they will, she wouldn’t need to be cast until near the end of the shooting, if they are filming the chapters much in order. We’re bound to get a few soldiers like Chiswyck cast as well.
Maester_TcostQuote Reply
That’s one thing we haven’t really talked about—the Harrenhal crew. There are loads of antagonists to cast, all for the specific purpose of making sure Arya has some really bad days.
Chiswyck, Polliver, Raf the Sweetling, the Tickler, Weese… all minor roles with little or no speaking lines. Ser Amory Lorch can, in places, be replaced by Gregor, until he gets eaten by a bear.
Qyburn gets introduced here as well, as part of the Bloody Mummers, though he can probably wait. But what about Vargo Hoat?
The Trout may be out, but surely we get a goat!

I am so looking forward to her “Kill Bill” scenes, hearing her recite the death list. I only wonder what will happen with Arya once she has disposed of them all… I really hope that Mr. Martin might throw us a bone there and let her have her happily-ever-after together with Gendry – but that would be too un-bloody obvious now, wouldn’t it? And Mr. Martin isn’t really into catering to our fairy-tale appetites. : \

Is she a Painted Whore that Cersei gives to Joff as a Name Day Present or is she the Mistress of one of the other Kings (can’t see this myself).
It’s also been speculated given they were looking for someone with long dark hair that she’s another of Roberts Bastards (an early introduced Bella) rather than a Kings Mistress.

My guess, she is one of Balons’ household. He is king, and since only Joffrey out of our other options is otherwise plausible, (Renly, Stannis and Robb are out of the question, duh), I really think its Balon. Fits better. Unless she’s trolling ofc.

I’m in dubio over Pod, I hope this guy can act (which I assume he can because the casting department is most of the time spot on) because otherwise they could have given te role to a kid. The biggest charm of Pod is the shy kid in him, and him outgrowing Tyrion. But it worked out well with Gendry, so I have hope.

Either he’s with Brienne when she get’s Jaime or the bandits held him as hostage (most likely) to ensure Brienne comes back with Jaime. I love the Pod and Brienne characters. They are amongst the brave along with Arya and Tyrion. These are also the characters I’m hoping will still be standing on the last page of the last novel.
