The time for this week’s Season One Award vote is upon us. Up for deliberation this time around is Game of Thrones season one’s Best Monologue. There are several worthy contenders in the poll below. And no doubt you will let us know that a few of them are unworthy as well. Either way, these are the 5 nominees that we have chosen. You disagree? Good, tell us so in the comments. But be sure to vote first!
UPDATE: Maybe a little late, but I found YouTube vids of 4 of the 5 nominees (Littlefinger’s monologue isn’t on there, for obvious reasons).
Alliser Thorne – You Don’t Know Cold
Maester Aemon – Honor
Drogo – A Gift to Rhaego
Old Nan – Fear is for the Winter

I v0ted for Jason Momoa because none of the other scenes mentioned really had any affect on me. I had heard the Old Nan story so many times from previews that it didn’t really stand out to me when it actually aired in context.
I’m surprised no Ned, Dany, or Robb monologues were included. Or what about Osha’s story about what she was running from? That was delivered brilliantly and served to really drive home how scary it is beyond the Wall.

My vote is for Maester Aemon. It was at that point in the show I knew I had to read the books. It was the first time in the show that I felt the need to know more about a character!
I loved Old Nan’s speech though. Old Nan has turned out to be right about a lot of things!

This one was between Old Nan and the Khal for me, but weighing them up against each other, I think even Drogo would have gotten the shivers had he heard Old Nan’s speach, whereas she would have simply shrugged off the power of that summer warrior’s voice. Old Nan +1!

Old Nan.
Yep, nearly word for word from the book and she did it wonderfully. It was one of the first moments that separated this show from the other wanna-be’s. Fantastic!
The other choices are good as well.
I’d also like to bring up LC Mormont’s dialogue at the end of episode 10 to Jon and as the Night’s Watch head down under.

Tough choice for me here, though I have to say, Phil, you chose some excellent contenders.
I guess it’s between Alliser and Drogo. Both of those were just incredible monologues. I’ll give my vote to Drogo because Momoa had to do his in a fake language, and yet it’s unforgettable even so. But Teale made Alliser Thorne one of my favorite surprises of the adaptation, and that particular monologue did a lot of the job to that end.
Next up would be Old Nan, who was quite wonderful too :)

You know, looking at these choices along with knowing there are others that are just as good, it’s a nice little reminder, or indicator if you will, of why the show is so good. When you have a series that has so many powerful monologues as this it’s really a treat.

There were so many great monologues in this season. I came in thinking “Old Nan, easily” and then started reading. “Maester Aemon, oh my god that was great” and then “Drogo, the best monologue ever delivered in a made up language” and I wound up being just so impressed with the whole season.
Still voted Margaret John. Still gives me chills.

Old Nan’s “Oh my sweet summer child” speech was the most amazing monologue I’ve seen on any show. Creeped me right the fuck out.
Maester Aemon’s “The gods were cruel” speech was almost as good and probably the second most amazing monologue I did ever see.
Khal Drogo comes in third for me. The Dothraki hakarage was badass. Momoa knocked it out of the park. If not for two amazing talented veteran actors leveraging their experience and gravitas (and their speeches being in English), he’d've taken it out.

Tough, tough decision.
1. I love the content of littlefinger’s “Just fuck them” speech, but the delivery are wanting, too awkward and jarring.
2. Aemon’s speech from the book is good, but I am not moved.
3. Old Nan’s is great in the promo, but lost its punch in the actual scene. Without the rest about the wandering hero and CotF, it is just a scary tale without much significance.
4. Alister Thorne’s is moving and surprising, gave the role much needed additional dimension.
5. However, Drogo’s is transformational. Before that, Drogo seemed detached, just someone has power. After Jason Mamoa’s fisting pumping, fire dacing performance, one can see his charisma, passion and determination, truly a leader of a warrior tribe. Too bad the screenplay in Conan wasted Jason’s talent. My vote is for Drogo.

While I didn’t vote for it, Drogo’s gift to Rhaego was fantastic. Most of it was Momoa, but part of it was their decision to create the Dothraki language and how great it turned out. His voice however just intensified and rocked that language. I actually used this very scene with the youtube link on another forum to rebut a few comments from the unknowing about Momoa’s abilities when speaking of the Conan movie.

Also, everyone all “abloo bloo people are only voting for Old Nan because her actress died, Drogo deserves it.” I hated Drogo’s speech, why am I getting pumped about rape and murder? The Dothraki are only a step above Gregor Clegane and I’m so glad they never rode on Westeros. I think you need testosterone to make this speech appealing because it super turned me off despite being fairly well delivered by Jason Mamoa.

1. Aemon. I didn’t read the books until after the first season, but this was the scene that I decided I had to do so.
2. Nan. Thankfully I didn’t see the promo. I work Sunday nights so I always use DVR for HBO shows. I know which shows to watch without HBO’s spoilery promos. They’re almost as bad the as “Next week on…..”. Don’t watch those either. It also took me from wondering if Bran dies after the first ep, to realizing he is a much bigger character in the overall story than I originally perceived.
3. Drogo. While the Dothraki language is BADASS, it took away from this scene, because of the subtitles. It woulda been worse in English, but still.
4. Petyr. Too different from the book, and the only scene where I couldn’t tell the difference between Littlefinger and Mayor Carcetti from ‘The Wire’.
1,000,005. Thorne. Any three words any character said the whole season would rank above this asshole. Heh.

Hands down the winner has to be Drogo’s speech! Not only could speaking in a new fake language be extremely difficult, but Jason put so much emotion & energy into that speech, I felt like I was going to fight in the war with him. Even Emilia has said in interviews, that she herself was mesmerized by Jason as Drogo during that scene. Drogo was basically mute for most of the season; but when he finally spoke, I felt tremors.
“Khal Drogo” proved Jason Momoa has come a long way from “Baywatch”!!

Went with Drogo – while although Old Nan’s and Maester Aemon’s were powerful, I just felt that at the time of Drogo’s speech, after “crowning” Viserys, that the speech fit in well. I remember when I watched it for the first time how pumped up it made me feel, and I really did believe he would go to Westeros and hand them a tall glass of Dothraki. Then episode 10 came along. And then I read the books. :(

2. Old Nan, surely. I think she’s gonna win this one. Gives me a chill.
3. Tywin Lannister skinning the stag. Sure, first half of the scene is a dialogue, but Jaime remains quiet towards the end, and Tywin is just badass.
Drogo’s speech was good, but actually, guys: it was more than close to overacting.

That’s tough one. The toughest maybe.
Old Nan’s speech showed pure spirit of the series and books as well. It was her trailer I loved the most. My friends after seeing it became ASoIaF men.
Maester Aemon’s speech turned all Jon Snow’s problems into nothing. We could truly see how hard is to be Targaryen in non-Targaryen world. Truly sad.
Khal Drogo’s speech nailed the episode. I wasn’t Drogo’s fan before. But after that, till his death, I was.
So, knowing that Old Nan wins, I can vote for Drogo:
3. Maester Aemon.
2. Old Nan.
1. Khal Drogo!

Aliser Thorne – You could see him reliving the moment he lost his self respect.

Old Nan – spine chilling delivery
Khal Drogo – testosterone pumping pure awesomeness that…hit the line. didn’t cross it, but didn’t avoid it either. You know what line I’m talking about.
Littlefinger: Love the actor, love the character. Hate the screenwriting of his character. This monologue was no exception.
People feeling weird about getting pumped up about a speech that went overboard about rape and pillage at it’s end should remind themselves that this show made them feel good about domestic violence (say another word and I’ll honor you again), hitting children (everyone’s favorite Joffrey smackdown GIF), and fratricide (he was no dragon). Truely, Game of Thrones is about the Greatest story of forbidden love ever told, and the lengths the two of them had to go to make it happen. >:)

It won’t win because a) it was ruined for a lot of people by Ros and her friend’s moaning, and b) it wasn’t in the book so the purist are outraged, but I’m definetly going with Aidan Gillen on this one, the lines were great, the delivery pitch perfect, and I actually thinks new material like that (as well as LF and Varys’ scenes) for the series are very welcome.

I say LF. For a casual viewer of the show, you realize in that scene something not just important to the past by to the immediate present. Why is this guy talking about f***ing the Starks? Why is he so insistent that the two women in the room play their roles convincingly? Just how much of the game of thrones is Littlefinger responsible for–and is he the true master of it? Drogo for the win! Jason Momoa rocked that speech, and Drogo SHOULD have been over the top there – he is so silent and stoic much of the rest of the time.
Old Nan was darn good, and I am sorry that Margaret Johns won’t be around because she did have a spooky delivery.
I’m not sure what exactly, but I have not liked Aemon on the show as much as in the books – he seemed frailer and somehow gentler to me in the books, and certainly much older. But I think it was more the filming of his monologue that didn’t sit quite as right with me, than his delivery.
I had problems with Littlefinger’s monologue from the start. Thought it was preposterous that he would spill so much personal stuff to two whores working for him – he keeps things much closer to the vest than that. Gillen’s delivery was fine, other than the “distraction” in the background, but the whole idea of it and the setting was too over the top for me.
Loved Thorne’s speech and Owen nailed it, but it was a shade too reminiscent of Quint’s Indianapolis speech in Jaws for me to give it the top spot – but not that was not the fault of the actor at all.

Drogo gets this one. Hands down. Though, Aemon was a good runner-up.

The easiest pick so far – Old Nan ! Not that others were bad, especially Drogo, but the Nan’s monologue cannot be described by words. 10/ 10

I also found Jason monologe a little cheesy… It was like an elvish translation of a Manowar’s song. In any case it was really impressive in screen.
Littlefinger’s one maybe was inside the wrong situation. I prefer his dialogues.
But the other three … they nailed it. Old Nan tales becoming alive and the amused face of Bran; Aemon, talking in a way only a Maester and a Targarien could; and Thorne, a character I hated from the books … and I loved him since that monologue.

I had to choose Aemon. I enjoyed the other speeches, but just thinking about the emotion behind Aemon’s speech to Jon has me nearly tearing up. I had always read his part in the book more as sad and maybe exhausted after the life he’s lived, so hearing the rage behind the words just really struck me.

Maester Aemon’s monologe. It was like a window into the past of which we all want to know more.

Heh… I don’t agree with you, but that was hella funny! :)

True, nothing bad with Manowar’s songs :)

I voted for Maester Aemon, because at the time, I haven’t read the book and found his revelation as a Targaryen very compelling. His voice just seemed to carry the weight of hundreds of years.
Osha’s monologue on what’s beyond the Wall was also great.

1. Old Nan: gives me the chills.
2. Khal Drogo: keep on replaying this one.
3. Thorne: Loved the end of his dialogue.

Damn! I’m stuck between Old Nan and Aemon! Both was most dramatic monologues!
Aaaaand.. OK, Aemon.
Although, Robert’s words “Do you think it’s the honour that keeps piece? The only thing that keeps peace is fear, fear and blood!”. I know it’s not a monologue, but words were just fantastic.

I vote for King Robert’s speech about the Tully boy!….That stupid booooy….

PanchoFrancisco,
*Tarly, as in one of craven Sam’s ancestors ;). The Tully’s and Baratheon’s were allies during the rebellion.

Robert Baratheon’s “Absentee King” speech given to Cersei – Best lines spoken so far in GoT. It shuts Cersei up and shows off the fact that Robert is still smarter than everyone thinks.
Since it’s not a choice, I’ll pick the old bat, Old Nan.

I, too, feel like Old Nan will win. If she doesn’t, I’ll feel guilty.
My ranking:
5. LF. What did he say again?
4. Drogo. I’ll admit I’m too encumbered by a modern outlook and personal phobias to really like it. I must say the show did not make me “feel good” about any of the other things Critical Geek listed-
3. Old Nan. As someone pointed out, the actual monologue made less an impression on me than the voice in the trailer.
2. Thorne. He’s an a$$hole but his story had me listening.
1. Aemon. He conjured up a whole world of legend, while being badass.

Yikes, a hummer? That’s pretty gross though maybe not by GoT standards.

Old Nan…….she nailed that scene and made it really play much stronger than I recall feeling when reading it.

He’s already going to win the best comedy poll with his confession. :-)

LOL @ Drogo comment. Genius post.
I vote for old nan as well.
“Kings froze to death in their castles same as the shepherds in their huts. And women smothered their babies rather than see them starve…”
Chilling.

This was a tough one. Went with Old Nan’s story, it was chilling to the bone: “And women smothered their babies, rather than see them starve. And wept. And felt the tears freeze on their cheeks.”
Khal Drogo’s promise and Alliser Thorne’s story were almost as good.

All amazing! “Milking the eel,” didn’t even make it, that’s how strong the list is!

Drogo’s…
Old Nan’s is good, really good, really creepy but…
Jason Momoa makes us feel the very barbarian in him in his monologue without uttering a single English word, and that… Well, that ! That has to count for something, goddamn it !
ClaudiaQuote Reply
Maybe a little late, but I found YouTube vids of 4 of the 5 nominees (Littlefinger’s monologue isn’t on there, for obvious reasons).
Alliser Thorne – You Don’t Know Cold
Maester Aemon – Honor
Old Nan – Fear is for the Winter
Drogo – A Gift to Rhaego

Winter Is Coming,
Maybe a tad late yes, I’m already waiting impatiently for today’s new award category!
(And I stick with my initial idea: the best monologue should be the one that one remembers most vividly. Nice collection of monologue videos though!)

WIC, I find it odd that you have a polling widget at the bottom of this page for a different question from months ago, yet you don’t have a widget for the current question. So the method of counting the votes… fingers and toes, is it?

Huh? The poll is embedded within the post…

That’ll be revealed all at once, I assume like in a ‘real’ Award Ceremony… (Winter once said it would be announced in an exciting way, so maybe some live internet broadcasting?? Just hoping ;-)
