Emilia Clarke wins a EWwy!

Sure, it’s not quite an Emmy (unless you’re an odd strain of dyslexic who somehow reads “w” as “m”), but it’s still something cool!

Emilia Clarke, our very own khaleesi, took home the top prize for Best Supporting Actress in Entertainment Weekly’s online awards poll, beating out a slew of other worthy actresses. You can read all about it HERE.

Clarke garnered 25.22% of the vote; Sara Ramirez of Grey’s Anatomy received 21.28%; Mae Whitman of Parenthood received 20.07%; Regina King of Southland received 12.21%; KaDee Strickland of Private Practice received 12.19%; and Maggie Siff of the highly-touted Sons of Anarchy won 9.03% of the vote.

Granted, “EWwy,” is kinda offputting. Or as @Ank1Aggarwal said on Twitter, “The last thing she is is EWwy. Emilia should have gotten a Yummy.”

Just so!

Now keep in mind, in order to be nominated for an EWwy you cannot be nominated for an Emmy. Game of Thrones (Dramatic Series) and Peter Dinklage (Supporting Actor) were not even in the running. But the EWwy Awards are also the fans’ ways of rectifying Emmy omissions; Sean Bean, robbed of an Emmy nod, was nominated for a Best Actor EWwy. (He finished behind Nathan Fillion of Castle and John Noble of Fringe.) So in a sense, the EWwy is a consolation prize—or the NIT of entertainment awards tournaments.

But hey, it’s always good to get love and respect from the voting public.

Fire And Blood: Congrats to a well-deserving Emilia Clarke! What’s most interesting to note is she was the only actress from a science fiction / fantasy show to be nominated and still ran away with the prize; double surprising, knowing what a gigantic following Gray’s Anatomy has. This was a great win for her.

NOTE: The actual Emmy Awards will be broadcast live this Sunday at 8:00pm EST (5:00pm PST) on FOX. I’ll be tuning in to root for Peter Dinklage (Supporting Actor), David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Writing), Tim Van Patten (Directing), and Game of Thrones in general (Drama Series). I will be Live Tweeting the event from the comfort of my own living room, so follow me @Axechucker if you want to!

Or, unfollow me if that sort of thing annoys you! I may be giving a running fashion commentary. You’ve been warned!

Congratulations Emilia! Surely you had fun.
If it is a consolation prize … The Wire got one? (I’m obsessed I know).

Never mind that it’s just Best Supporting Actress or Entertainment Weekly because it’s not a grand award by the scheme of things, but it’s good that I wasn’t part of the panel else I never would have voted for her to win that award.

    Sweet!

Congrats to Emilia for sure….still kinda bummed she wasn’t nominated for an Emmy, but I guess there was some (apparently) though competition. Haven’t really seen much of the other shows that they got nominated from, so I can’t compare, but I thought Emilia was great, especially considering this was her first ‘real’ acting opportunity after graduating.

Haha, definitely sounds like that! :)

In my opinion, Emilia wasn’t even the best supporting actress on GoT itself (I’ll say it again: eye-overacting), but congrats anyway! And her acting can only improve as the series goes on, so who knows, at the end Emilia might do the impossible and even get close to my mental image of Dany the semi-goddess…

And now I start crossing my fingers for the real Emmy’s!

Well, for me those eye movements came across as over-acting, and her movements in general as very studied. But her better scenes came definitely towards the end of the season, which is the reason I’m hopefull I’ll like Emilia more in the next season(s). And anyway, she convinced the majority of fans and critics I think, so don’t mind me ;-)

This is off-topic, but a lot of us are waiting on the DVD/Blu-Ray set and I was wondering how the blu-ray set of Boardwalk Empire looked like. Not only is the set not available, it doesn’t even have a release date yet. Season 2 starts september 25, usually HBO has released their Blu-Ray versions by now. I can’t find any news on it online besides people wondering the same thing as me. Not a single statement from HBO. Marketing-wise a big fail, let’s hope they do better with Game of Thrones.

She has this one expression she uses that I find extremely chilling, like she’s about to eat my face and it’s all in the eyes. I call it Khaleesi-face, lol. Best example is during the wine seller scene when she says “You will drink.”

My biggest critique of her acting is actually the way she uses her voice is overdone from time to time. Especially when her “dragon’s been awoken”.

Sean Bean should’ve been nominated for an Emmy. Emilia Clarke was pretty good (congrats on the EWwy), but Bean and Addy really stole the show, in my opinion. Not to mention, Varys and Littlefinger… Someone really needs to give Conleth Hill some kind of an award, because his portrayal of the Spider was spot on.

I don´t think you were offensive in any way. I didn´t like Emilia´s performance nor Lena´s either but never said anything about Emilia because I understand that is her first big job so I hope she will do better next season. I´m sure.

    andrea,

I don’t blame Lena for the Cersei that we have. Well not entirely. I think its partly the writing, maybe they found Cersei from book to screen was too cartoonish, and they wanted to make her more cold and calculating. I also think that Lena’s pregnancy played apart in her screen time and her wardrobe (she wore a bathrobe almost the entire season) which are big factors when it comes to looking the part of a character. She also needs a healthy dose of Atia from HBO’s Rome. I thinking she played a queen well and a mother to a king, but she was missing something. That nastiness, that bitchiness that Polly Walker on Rome delivered so well. I actually thought Lena was perfect in the first episode. But after that, she was something else…

My hopes are for season 2 she will be head to head with Tyrion, her wardrobe will be slimmer, flashier (fingers crossed) and she’ll have that great scene when she is pretty drunk during the Battle of the Blackwater…

i really feel that Season 1 was testing the waters, and the show can only improve from here.

Sometimes people who are just stating a negative opinion gets called a troll, and that’s not really fair. That’s one thing. Constructive criticism is fine, and there’s actually plenty to complain about.

However, when someone has for months been going “This show is a complete joke, it’s just absolute trash, I have no idea how people can’t see how bad it is”… then why in the world are they still here posting that over and over again? They obviously don’t like the show, so why are they hanging out in a place for “News and Rumors about HBO’s Game of Thrones”?

They want to get a reaction out of people. They don’t get enjoyment out of the show, so they want to get enjoyment from spoiling the fun for others.

    Tar Kidho,

Please keep posting you are one of most civil, honest people on this board.

But on to the topic at hand I thought EC did a good job. But she is young and needs another season under her belt. She needs to look back at her role and see what she has to stop doing and what she has to start doing. She needs to evaluate herself and she needs direction in that regard. Less haphazard, tight shooting schedules are in order for Season 2. She can only get better right?
And you know what, sometimes there are certain actors/actresses that don’t work for us. It’s one of the most subjective things in the world IMHO. Actors are people and like people they bring traits and personality traits that will get noticed despite their acting ability and some people react to these things in different ways. I have a friend who hates Julianne Moore for example and there’s no other real explanation than “I don’t know she just gets under my skin.” Very similar to the “over-eye acting” of which you accuse Emilia.
At the same time you have made friendly and reasoned arguments why you think so. Yet you also hope that she may improve instead of simply saying “I hate her” like an IMDB thug.

The more level-headed thinkers the merrier I say! And there are a great many of us here. Let’s swell the ranks!

I don’t see why calling EW online voting results “gross” is so trollish. Gross: unsubstantiated, unqualified, unrefined. It’s not even about who won, or who voted. No, it’s the process that allows those results that is gross. The results may as well be completely meaningless–wait, it is meaningless. I guess that’s much worse than gross. For some reason everytime someone criticizes her acting, people here go up in arms about it. Rose-tinted glasses perhaps.

I never intended my comment to be read as the be all and end all of things nor should it be held in higher regard. I was just expressing my opinion and everyone is entitled to one.

Just to explain further – my main gripe is the feeling I get that criticizing Emilia (and Emilia ALONE!) in any way, shape or form is a no-gone zone on this website. People comment on Lena Headey’s acting all the time but never to the point that everyone is trading blows about it. Same with Sophie Turner. But it’s always a different case with Emilia.

When I said rose-tinted glasses I was referring to those who are probably so enamoured of her beauty that they can’t face criticism of her acting and would defend her to the death. Was that pretentious? No. Condescending? Maybe. But I’ve been there many times (with all my Hollywood crushes -eep!) so I know the feeling and it’s never a good position to be on the other end of the spectrum.

    Moe,

I actually agree with this quite a bit. I mean, I definitely think she did a decent job with the character, but she was (for me) one of the weaker members of a strong cast, and I feel that both she and Peter Dinklage receive an inordinate amount of praise simply due to the characters they’re playing. By this I don’t mean to say that either actor was bad, and in fact, they both had some very good moments, but that with a fan favourite like Tyrion or Dany the actor can get away with working a little less hard because of the inherent popularity or cleverness of the character/script. Dany wasn’t a favourite of mine in the book, but I know A LOT of people who love her right off the bat and who are moved by her progression and drawn in by her storyline. Similarly, Tyrion as a character is cunning and intelligent and provides much of the humour in the first book/season. He’s an easy character to like (and one of my favourites, as is probably pretty obvious from my icon). I was actually a little lukewarm about Dinklage once I’d actually seen the show, tbh. In terms of the Emmys (Emmies?), I would have liked to have seen the nomination go to someone else, perhaps Harry Lloyd, simply because in this case I feel it is the character being nominated and not the actor.
Does it invalidate the opinion of someone who disagrees with me? Of course not. I think it makes it more interesting to post on here when one can have a friendly debate with the other posters about our views on the show and where it has been/where it is going. In fact, I de-lurked for precisely that purpose, during a post sometime last year when people were arguing about whether or not Littlefinger is a pedo. o.0 Haha.
There have been some legitimate trolls here, but they have actually been very few and far between. Rudeness is unpleasant, and sometimes alarmist prophecies of doom and gloom can ruin everyone’s mood, but they aren’t necessarily trolls, just people who at that time happen to be rude or alarmist (I had my own doom and gloom wallowing session about Brienne!).

I think full bitch mode will come into play when Natalie “Anne Boleyn” Dormer shows up. It’s one of the reasons I agree with Margaery being aged up. Those two can go head to head.

And as I said, Cersei needs a bit of Polly Walker from Rome: http://youtu.be/QVLWB9HJK5M

the other actress in the scene, the one who plays Livia the future empress, Alice Henley is my pick for Ygritte.

And The Wire is a masterpiece. It completely renders the Emmys meaningless. I agree that the Emmys were smart to give the drama series to Mad Men three years running now but overlooking the Wire is criminal.

Ser Lemon Cakes: Emilia’s Dany has been the most popular character for a lot of the TV only new GOT fans

This is totally true. Even as a diehard Dany fan, I wasn’t sure that the Dothraki stuff was coming off well in the first couple eps, but after the second episode my newbie friend made a point of saying how awesome Daenerys was, and she kept saying so after almost every episode. So there’s a bit of reader expectations souring things going on, IMO.

Steve Hugh Westenra: I feel that both she and Peter Dinklage receive an inordinate amount of praise simply due to the characters they’re playing.

Ah, but this is totally par for the course. Even the best actor given a boring character will never be nominated for anything let alone win. The writing and characterization are approximately half of the award. The other half is the acting. Why? Because the voters are driven by how they feel about the character, not just how good the acting was. Also, more interesting characters require more from the actor, IMO, in that they have to cover more emotional states.

    Joshua Taylor,
I saw Rome of course (I´m a history freak) and yes, probably, that bit of Polly Walker is what LH needs (but they are two very different actresses).
I like Alice Henley for Ygritte!
I don´t know if you saw Thiago Slash comment about Cersei: he thinks Cersei was “outbitched” by Joffrey. Although I think it makes sense does not convince me (entirely). Still think there´s something missing… like you said.

Joshua Taylor: And The Wire is a masterpiece.

Thanks for encouraging my obsession. I think it was, it is a masterpiece… the writting, the characters…just perfect. Gets deeper and deeper, I keep finding things, layers. What a monster Knurk has created when he commanded me to watch it.

Joshua Taylor: overlooking the Wire is criminal.

Yes, “criminal” is precisely the word.

Mad men? I began to see it but gave it up. I don´t know what happened there but I did not like that show. It is good of course, I can see that, but I wasn´t hooked or excited. Sorry?

Agreed. The actor has to work hard whether or not their character is well-written, especially if their character experiences a range of emotions.

In Peter Dinklage’s case, Tyrion is a very well-written character, but it takes a skilled actor to translate Tyrion’s wit and charm to the screen. The only problem I have with Dinklage’s portrayal is his accent, which is poorly done. In Emilia’s case, as well-written as people believe Daenerys is, she’s also a character who internalizes everything that happens to her. She doesn’t have many witty lines (or that many lines in English for that matter), so she was probably one of the most difficult characters to adapt and to translate from the book. Emilia also had to deliver many of her lines in a completely made-up language and make that language sound real and sincere as the episodes progressed.

I’ve actually seen criticisms about Emilia playing Dany as too distant and listless in the beginning then improving later. She’s either not playing Dany strong enough for some people or playing her too strong for others. I think her portrayal was good and I’m sure she’s up to the task of churning out even better performances. Obviously she’s doing something right if so many fans have no problems believing that she IS Daenerys, rather than she’s just playing Daenerys.

This is an online poll, not a major award and I think it’s well-deserved if we’re considering that it’s based on viewers opinions. I’m just happy that the actors are being recognized for their portrayals in a genre show.

Congrats Emilia! I hope that in the near future she gets even more props and awards for the great job she has done on the show, for the fans, and just for her craft in general. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

    andrea,

To each their own my dear. No need for the ‘Sorry’!

Mad Men is difficult to get into i had to press through the first five or six to do it, kind of like the Wire. I liked it from the get-go for one thing as it has some great Mutant Enemy alumnii (Vincent Kartheiser and Christina Hendricks) and I love, love John Slattery and though like most people on this planet, I hated Betty Draper, I found Don Draper very compelling. Definitely one to retry if you ever have the time. The show has so many layers and it just unravels and unravels like the dying Patriarchal order itself, eaten away by the social revolutions of the 60s. The show has this glossy sheen that comes off as too clean and sterile and to some people lifeless, but there is SOOO much more under the surface.
