Filming preparation in Dubrovnik ramps up

Minčeta Fortress

With filming of Game of Thrones set to begin in Croatia in about 10 days, the preparations in and around the city of Dubrovnik are in full swing. Here are two articles with details of the filming plans and even some early set photos.

The Location Guide has some good info on where and when they will be filming:

Filming in Croatia will be serviced by Embassy Films. The shoot will focus on historic parts of Dubrovnik and the island of Lokrum for just over three weeks between 18th September and 13th October. The Minčeta, Bokar and Lovrijenac fortresses will be used, along with the Old Town entrance gates. The city’s Dubac quarry and graveyard will be used for set-building. The island of Lokrum is renowned for its rural Mediterranean vegetation.

The Dubrovnik Times reports on a set under construction:

Although a veil of secrecy has been surrounding the upcoming filming of the HBO blockbuster serial “Game of Thrones” in Dubrovnik snippets of information are slowly leaking out. One of the locations is in the process of being constructed in the suburbs of Dubrovnik in Župa. The chosen location is the site of the future cemetery “Dubac” on cliffs over the Adriatic Sea. The set is currently in the construction process and is under constant protection by a team of security guards.

Apparently those security guards aren’t very good, because the paper has a number of photos of the half-built set. Click through to the article to view them.

Winter Is Coming: Seems like the local media in Dubrovnik is pretty excited about Thrones being there. Should provide for some interesting articles and details once filming begins! What does everyone think of the different locations the production plans to use? What do you think they will be filming there?

The evil Twitter just refused to tweet this:
One of the questions on the auditon for extras was: Can you swim with load – weight or whatever word in english ;)
But it means one thing: Battle of the Blackwater!

And if you look at the map, the Lapad coastal zone is situeted in the nice gulf = a perfect place to film the Blackwater battle (with some CGI of course).

I am very curious about the set counstruction on Dubac?
    I ll try to investigate a bit…

I think I just got a brilliant idea…. I’ve got a friend studying/living in Ljubljana, Slovenia and I still have vacations until early October… I think I might just go to Slovenia to visit my friend and from there it’s not too far for a daytrip or three to Dubrovnik… hell yeah.
If anyone else is gonna be there (preferably a local) please reply ;)

Based on its proximity to the sea, that could be the model for Old Town, Lanisport, Griffin’s Roost or a host of other sites. It’s probably not White Harbor, since that is so far north. Maybe even one of the free Cities like Myreen or other parts of King’s Landing. I guess we need more context.

    Steve,

I think Ljubljana – Dubrovnik – Ljubljana is to much for one day, it’s about an 8 hour drive (one way only). But go for it anyway, Ljubljana and Slovenia in general is very beautiful, and so is Dubrovnik, judging from the pictures I’ve seen.

Totally off-topic but I must admit the casting bug has bitten me again. I created a partial list of roles not yet cast, including Season 3/4 characters. I tried very hard to stay away from A-listers or people who get a lot of work and/or recognition, though a couple snuck in. The child actors’ names I got off a British child actor’s representation site. Let me know what you think.

Great list Josh! It has quite a few big names: Kevin Whately, who I think would be great as Mace Tyrell but I doubt he’ll be available considering his leading role on Lewis. Saffron Burrows is also no nobody but I think that might actually be a possibillity since she won’t be returning on The Finder. James Purefoy as Euron Greyjoy I think is perfect but he is a very big name. I’m not sure if they can afford someone like him on the cast especially so shortly after Sean Bean.

Purefoy has expressed interest in being on the show, so he could take a pay cut for it.

Availability is not really an issue for recurring characters, especially if their shooting schedules are different.

Dang, I fly out of Zagreb at the crack of dawn on the 19th and don’t return to Croatia until October 18th – that was spectacularly bad timing and puts the mockers on a filming spying side-trip. Thank goodness for TitanCon – really looking forward to the bus tour.

As for casting speculation, just so long as they cast June Whitfield as Lady Olenna, I’ll be happy!

Dubrovnik is really, really nice. If it hadn’t been for those pesky Balkan Wars, I have no doubt it would be a much more popular vacation destination than it is.

So does anyone know what scenes they’ll be filming? Qarth? Dragonstone? Somewhere else I can’t think of?

Whoever they get for Dario needs to be more attractive than he sounds in the books. Maybe I’m just being judgmental about the gold tooth, but I don’t get what Dany sees in him. He seems kinda icky to me. Now, Oded Fehr – I can see why she’d want to hit that.

The Lovrijenac fortress (which is on a high rock separate from the city walls) should work well as Storm’s End I think. The interior of that fortress is full of potential sets, not least the courtyard. The entire old town is a marvel to behold and I am very happy to have visited there recently with my girlfriend. Too bad we didn’t know the filming schedule when we planned that vacation or we would have postponed it a couple of weeks. We went over to Lokrum one day but half the island was off limits due to the dry weather. Forest fire hazard or some such. I was a bit disappointed that I missed out on a potential GoT filming site. For that entire vacation I was as much in Westeros or Essos as in Dubrovnik. The mind of a true geek …

You imply that Dubrovnik is not a popular vacation destination? The place was choke full with tourists when I was there the last week in august. I would say the only downside to going there is the masses of tourists. Perhaps it was the peak of tourist season, I don’t know. In any case you should all go there. Now that it will be forever associated with GoT, why wouldn’t you?

    Nick Larter,

You mean you are in Zagreb, now?

All those who thinks that being in northern parts of Croatia or Slovenia is a piece of cake to get to Dubrovnik are terribly mistaken :)

From Zagreb to Split – there is motorway and you need about 3 to 4 hours. (by car)
Than there is a bit of motorway from Split to Vrgorac.
    Than: the end of motorway.
Before reaching the last (and the worst) part of the road one must cross Bosnian border (in and out), and that means waiting, waiting and more waiting..

The quickest bus connection lasts 11 hours!

After some thinking and rewatching the pics of Dubac location, and before having some more reliable info, I am going to guess that they are going to start Dany s storyline from this spot.

True, I just checked on Google Maps. I knew it’s never far to the Croatian border from Slovenia, but Dubrovnik is farther South then I thought. I’ve been to Ljubljana a couple of times. It’s really really nice. Kinda like central Europe, with a mediterranean flair. It’s a 7 hrs drive from my place though, so I can’t go visit there as often as I would like to.

Also, now that Purefoy is a certainty(I mean, no way are they gonna pass on that) I’m thinking he might be a great Euron but an even greater Victarion after all Victarion is the more viscious of the two and Purefoy is good at playing viscious roles. But maybe your pick is better. I don’t know the actor so I might be mistaken. What did you base your choice on?

Also I’m having a little trouble seeing Safron Burrows as Val but maybe that’s just haircolor and that can easily be changed. After all the series primary blonde: Cersei is played by a brunette.

Euron is all swagger and boasting, which Purefoy is VERY good at. His portrayel of Marc Antony is pretty much exactly what I picture when I read Euron’s scenes. Victarion is vicious but he’s also quieter; Euron is a carousing Klingon like Martok whereas Victarion is a brooding, intense Worf. (seven hells, I’m a geek)

We refer to Ramsay as “Reek” here out of consideration for non-readers. The first time we hear about Ramsay, we are told he is dead. Later we meet Reek, and assume that he is indeed just Reek until the last few moments of his scenes in the book. So when we talk about casting “Reek”, we mean Ramsay.

The pics remind me of Storm’s End more than anything else.

Been a while since I’ve posted but I’d like to vote nay for Purefoy as the Mance. I would however like to vote yea for Purefoy being involved with the project. Edmure maybe? Possibly a slightly reimagined Thoros? One of the new Lannisters? Hmmm thinking slightly outside the box, how about the Damphair? Could be a juicy casting especially if they explored Aeron’s rebirth a little more than in the books.

Apparently he said that Perlman was the only actor he imagined for any role, and it was for Sandor.

That’s correct, though GRRM said that Robert Baratheon (or rather, his jovial side) was also partially inspired by Brian Blessed’s portrayal as the King in the first season of BLACKADDER. But of course Blessed was both too old and too short for him to actually be in contention.

I just KNEW the similarity there wasn’t coincidental! He should have had Robert continually forget Tommen’s name, or that he even had two sons!

    Janeh227,

As awesome as he is, he does have a series going right now, and it’s an American network series which means its shooting schedule is ludicrously long. Plus I’m sure he’d be too expensive.

Josh Parker: Euron is all swagger and boasting, which Purefoy is VERY good at.

Well, you’ve utterly convinced me Purefoy for Euron! Still I’m not hundred percent with you on Victarion. I don’t know the actor you’ve chosen for him but he doesn’t look much like Victarion is described in the books. I’d say Luke Goss for Victarion but that’s solely based on his role as Nuada in Hellboy 2 who reminded me a lot of Victarion. Well actually it was the other way around, when I read the books I kinda had Nuada in mind every time it was about Victarion.

Also Jeffery Kissoon is black and I remember Thoros being white.

But that’s just nitpicking. It’s almost uncanny how close the actors you chose resemble the characters appearances I had pictured. Great job!

    Josh Parker,

I always thought Brian Blessed would be awsome as Robert, essentially his role in Black Adder which I love. Aside from him being too old by now. But I’d still love him to be on the show as a crazy, old Wildling warrior. Actually, I’d just love him on show doing anything.

Heh, alternative put him in a fatsuit, maybe he’d make a good Wyman Manderly. The biggest badass in all of Westros, if you know what I mean.

As for Thoros, I started thinking like a casting director; Thoros is foreign, so it’s not impossible that they’ll make him a black man. They’ve done it twice, why not a third time?

I just think Perlman would make for a rather convincing mammoth mahout. To hell with Hellboy. Mag the Mighty or bust! If not for the money, he should do it for the aesthetic value.

On a side note, Tom Waits would make a pretty cool Wildling. He has a rough and haggard look; menacing yet scrawny. And he is a decent actor, even though he’s more well known for his music.

Yeah that makes sense, I guess it’s a bit narrow minded to hang on to race that much. You might end up like Brian True May if you do.

Also what did you think of my suggestion for Victarion? And talking about suggestion I saw you hadn’t casted Blackfish yet so might I say: Nathaniel Parker, he looks kinda like him and he’s played the black sheep of a aristocratic family before so why not a black fish?

They only said they’re going to bring some of the Jaime’s scenes from ASOS into season 2, because he wouldn’t have anything to do in this season, otherwise. There’s really no need for the Kingsmoot to happen in season 2, since the Greyjoys already have plenty other things to do this season.

They also said they’d show more of Robb this season which I think is very problematic since that means A: They’ve got to show Riverrun and The Tullies since allmost all of Robb’s major scenes in ASoS occur there and no mention of either has been made and B: They might even show the event that is too terrible to name which would completely ruin the timeline since they’ve allready said that they’d end the season with the battle of Blackwater (which makes sense considering it’s at the end of the book) but the event that must not be named ever again occurs long after the battle of Blackwater, and certain events at Dragonstone and King’s Landing occur in the space between. So either they move it till even after the battle of Blackwater in season 2 which means that the events at Dragonstone and King’s Landing will now occur after the event that still cannot be named which means that the whole timeline Martin so carefully set up will be entirely messed up.

    Winterdark,

None of your two options. Robb does a lot of things in ACOK, so they really don’t need to bring any of his ASOS scenes into this season. They’ll simply show us what we couldn’t “see” in the book (because there was no POV near him). Simple as that.

Why do you think they cast Jeyne ?

A friend of mine got cast as an extra. He’s going to play a nobleman. He was told not to cut his hair or shave until the shooting. He will be there for 6 days, end of Sep, beginning of Oct. They were also told that it will be strictly forbidden to approach the actors. I might go there for 2-3 days to get daily updates on the spot, though.

Right, yeah that makes sense. I wonder how they’ll film his advancement through the Westerlands, I think besides Blackwater they can’t have any big battles in this season. Not that those really matter.

I read some comments from people who signed up as extras – they were asked if they could swim with a heavy load on them – so it seems they will shoot the Blackwater battle there.

If anyone wants to visit Dubrovnik – my recommendation would be you go there in winter. It’s quiet, it’s usually sunny (but beware of strong wind), and you can take a stroll on those battlements all day long without lots of tourists in the way. :-)
And you can pick oranges from the trees in the town park.
