HBO released the first teaser of the second season of Game of Thrones. And when I say teaser, I mean teaser. It contains no footage from the show, but does give us an idea as to what the possible tagline for this season may be…
Winter Is Coming: What a tease! They couldn’t even give us a little glimpse of Melisandre there? Oh well, I wasn’t expecting anything tonight anyway. I guess this is better than nothing. Good to know HBO is willing to promote this series, even this far away from airing.
UPDATE: HBO also released one of their signature sizzle reels, promoting their new and returning shows. They closed the reel with some Game of Thrones clips (from season one, but still cool). They also released this Emmy awards recap with a mention of Dinklage winning for Tyrion.

I didn’t even think about what they may use as a new tag line for the show, but its pretty cool. A bit more ominous than ‘Winter is Coming’ but also more possibly obscure to those who haven’t read the books. I can’t wait to see a trailer with the Red Priest and the night fires.

To non-bookreaders – which should be their main target audience right now – this sounds like The White walkers to me. So it would be disappointing to a whole lot of people if they kept this, and viewers were expeting them to show up. A lot of people seemed a bit annoyed that we didn’t get any more WW-action in the first season, so this might have been a bad choice for a tagline.

I’d be interested to hear TV only fans’ reactions to this. I don’t think they’d really know what the hell that’s referencing specifically, and only book readers can really get jazzed up about it (at least that’s what I would think).
I think book one had some solid lines that were easy to use for promoting the show (winter is coming and you win or you die being the two most obvious). And I agree that after Ned’s arc, people both get it now and the show could use with a little refresh in terms of marketing.
To the discussion above, I agree that “The night is dark and full of terrors” is probably referencing WWs and that, unless they play with the timeline some, Season 2 is probably premature to use that line. Here’s my submission for actual lines in the books that would work:
“What is dead may never die” – already said above
“They are the knights of summer, and winter is coming” – to tie in with last season a bit
Frankly, the more I think on it, the more I think they need to sell the show based on the characters. I’m envisioning a poster campaign similar to Rome’s season 2 (ex. Picture of Atia’s face with “Atia is a tram” superimposed on it). They did something similar for last season with the photos of a few characters on the iron throne, but they had shitty lines on most of them (Robert’s killing things clears my head line was garbage)
Towards that end, here’s a few I’d like to see: (and i believe i threw this suggestion out once before for season 1 but I’m not about to look back to double check that)
Arya – “I am the ghost in Harrenhal”
Arya – “Is there gold hidden in the village…”
Jon – “I am the sword in the darkness. The watcher on the wall”
Jon – “You know nothing Jon Snow”
Robb – “The king in the North” – then they could do season 3 “The king who lost the north”
Cat – “Give me Cercei Lannister and I will show you how gentle a woman can be”
Tyrion – “I am the only thing standing between them and the fire” – not sure if that’s exactly the line but its something like that
Tyrion – “Even a little man can cast a big shadow”
Jaime – depends on what they give him this season, but they could just stick with “There are no men like me. Only me”

I wouldn’t mind if they focused a lot of the promotion this year on Tyrion. After season 1 and the demise of Ned, the now Emmy-awarded Peter Dinklage seems a likely candidate to take up the role Sean Bean played last year. Also, the tag-line you suggest is applicable to many characters (Dany, Jon, Arya,…), at least if one can neglect a possible gender issue… Of course, “Even a little man can cast a big shadow” is less ominous than “The night is dark and full of terrors”, but IMO it better catches the spirit of the story.

That takes teaser to new heights. It’s all tease and no trailer! Even the very first trailer, the one with the tall trees and like 3 flashed scenes that ended with “Winter is coming” had more content! All we learn for this one is… marketing is changing their taglines each year. Which is a mighty fine idea. “The night is dark and full of terrors” is a good one.
Here’s my guesses for what’s going to be used as the main taglines for the rest of the seasons:
season 3: Now the rains weep o’er his hall, with no one there to hear.
season 4: All men must die.
season 5: That’s as useful as nipples on a breastplate.
Just kidding. 5 will probably be: The North remembers.
I wonder if they will do a new “throne trailer” (my favourite one) with footage just for that trailer that’s not for the final show. i.e. a rotation of Robb, Dany, Stannis, Renly, Joffrey, and Balon and whispers about their ambitions. Or they’d probably do something new, but I definitely would want a trailer that features the 5 kings and queen.

I agree. In addition to an overall theme for the season, a character-specific poster campaign can be effective. Last season my husband and I designed our own posters for a party based on the layout of the ones published by HBO. In part, because we found important characters to be missing and in part because some of the lines they chose, well, sucked (I’m thinking Robert here).
Our choices:
Tyrion – They have their swords. I have my mind.
Jaime – The things I do for love.
Arya – Fear cuts deeper than swords.
Sansa – Why can’t life be like a love song?
Robb – I know what is expected of me.

Stephen Dillane is nowhere near that. He’s a thin guy with a high voice. Also he doesn’t look even the smallest bit like Mark Addy who’s supposed to be his brother. I am pretty sure they just had the actor playing Stannis whisper that for the promo. I doubt he’ll be doing a lot of whispering on the show as that wouldn’t fit Stannis’s character.
As for Dillane’s look, it’s nothing as I imagined Stannis being from the book, but if he’s as talented an actor as others have made him out to be, I’m confident he’ll do a great job in the role. He doesn’t look a lot like Mark Addy to me, but it could simply be that one brother took more after their mother, and the other took more after the father. ~shrugs~ They’re not obligated to adhere that closely to the book descriptions of characters except where it’s truly important for the plot.

Robert and Stannis AREN’T SUPPOSED to look alike. Many comments are made in the book about how different they are (and how much older Stannis looks, just to head off all the “but he’s supposed to be younger”) complainers.
Also, my brother and I have the same parents and were raised together, and we couldn’t be LESS alike. The only thing we have in common is that we both have read hair and are musical, but even there, his hair is a lighter red than mine, he’s more of a musician and I’m more of a singer, and our tastes in music couldn’t be more different. Our facial structure is completely different; he favors my dad and I my mom. Our body types are totally different; I’m fat and he’s skinny. We’re both tall, though.
Dillane was expertly cast. He was even among my own personal shortlist of actors I’d like to see get the role.

Not really. Last season had four big time deaths (Viserys, Robert, Ned, Drogo). This year will be great, but there are only two important deaths, neither of which I’d put on the level of Ned or Drogo (at least from the audience’s perspective), Renly and Balon. Season 3 and 4 are when GRRM really gets back to doing what he does best: crushing your hopes and dreams;)
As for the tagline/White Walker reference, I agree that there is a good chance they move up the attack on the Fist to the final episode of this season, especially if they are moving up Jaime’s release, as well. Then they can open Season 3 with the aftermath/Old Bear’s death.

On a black and white photo there’s no mistaking my brother and I as siblings, we have the same shape face, same nose, same smile, he’s taller but boys usually are. As far as ending on the Fist I can see them wanting to end the season with the battle on the Fist, but I’m not sure they can afford to do so. With the Battle on the Blackwater being such an expensive set piece, I’m not sure they can do another big battle that would involve a bunch of special affects (makeup on the wrights, possible cgi animals, etc). My guess is that they’ll leave the battle itself as a season ending cliffhanger, and end on the 3 horns sounding and Sam referencing that that means its the others. Then fade to black.

As an aside, I am a Paul Giamatti fan and I wouldn’t call John Adams ‘great’. Consistent high quality sets, good acting, etc? Yes, absolutely. But somehow ‘great’ got lost in the depressing biographical/period piece topic. As supporting actor Dillante was a functional part of the show. I didn’t want to go into any great detail before, but family resemblance or lack thereof is something I’ve always found intriguing. Anyways, regarding the general reaction to this teaser… here at WiC, it’s quite tame. The real bitching and negativity is all over youtube and the GOT facebook page. It seems like 99% of the TV-only fans got absolutely nothing out of this teaser (they barely registered the voice, and no one realizes it’s Stannis). They all just keep saying stuff like “WTF is this crap? It’s just a logo. Worst teaser ever. LAME.”
This makes me think that the teaser is primarily for us fans, much like the first two teasers last year. I don’t think anyone but us even registered those first teasers. The difference now is that the show is a huge hit.
Personally, I loved the teaser and am very excited about Dillane.

Same here, but I’ve grown to like Stephen Dillane based on his pictures alone. Given how talented he is, I’m confident he’ll pull it off.
See, I’ve always pictured Stannis with a face like a clenched fist, tall and broad-shouldered – pretty much like Mark Strong. But then I realized that it’s my sympathy and admiration for the character that leads me to picture him as more badass and charismatic than he is ever described to be.
Sure, we as readers realize that Stannis has a really remarkable personality, just, courageous, reasonable and likable, but we’re privy to the POVs of the only two characters that can be considered his friends. He really is a man who doesn’t show his feelings, but hides them behind a wall built over years of mistreatment and neglect he experienced from others.
Stephen Dillane has a face that fits with that image: cold and impassionate, with deep sadness visible only through his eyes. He is the man I can imagine enduring a year-long siege reduced to eating onions, and the man who brooded for years over a simple misunderstanding that he took for an offence. Not Mark Strong, or whoever was the fan-favourite before Dillane.

The thing that got me most excited was the Sizzle-reel in which HBO showed all their upcoming shows. Boy do they have a lot of new programs in store for the viewers (especially looking forward to Veep and Life’s too Short) and whaddayaknow, (just like last year) they end the reel with a bang showing Game of Thrones as their Emmy-winner.

The internet is producing a mob of entitled babies. To piss and moan about a teaser 6 months before the premier date is just silly beyond belief. I’m guessing the main goal of this was to announce an air date and to keep the show fresh in the HBO viewers mind.
I actually was happy with it because the production quality of this teaser is WAY beyond just about anything we saw last year, save the Throne teaser / trailer. They hadn’t even settled on a logo until shortly before the show’s heavy promotion began, and the teasers we got early were clearly just sort of “thrown together” for the book fans.

I think the chanting is probably going to be the bonfire scene on Dragonstone. They likely think it will make the burning of the Seven more ominous and more effective than just a bunch of knights standing around a fire silently. I’m really looking forward to that scene and hoping they give some good screen time to reaction shots for Stannis and Davos. So much can be established for both characters just from how they deal with that bonfire scene.

I actually like this little teaser better than most of the trailers from last year. And I also think that this year´s teasers and trailers are going to be of much higher quality.
I read somewhere that Ramin Djawadi composed the music for the first season after most of the trailers were out, or maybe he was too busy with the show to make any trailer music, because I felt that most of the music in the Season 1 trailers was very generic.
At least I thought so. So I´m hoping that he´ll compose some original music for the trailers this year. I´m not sure if this ever happens though, on TV.
Second, everyone involved in the show is so experienced now, so I´m thinking both the show and trailers will look better.
At least I hope so, as an avid lover of trailers. I say that, BUT, I will be joining the BWP this year, so I´ll never know unless they release more teasers like these without footage:)

“Game of Thrones” really does suit as a “neutral title.” It’s also one of the most brilliant titles in the series, full of implication and internecine malice. “Clash of Kings” could be about the Franco Prussian War or virtually any medieval conflict. And “A Song of Ice and Fire just sounds a little too vague. I think sticking with “Game” for the whole series was a good choice.
As for the night being dark and full of terrors, I still can’t get over Tyrion’s snarky bastardized translation of the prayers on the Selasori Quorhan in ADWS. “R’hollor keep us nice and toasty warm for the night is dark and full of terrors” or something like that.
It was so perfect for Tyrion it made me laugh for a long time, but now that’s what I always think of!

Thank you for your long, explicit and very interesting post. I can only imagine how much time it must’ve taken you to find the words. I watched Fugitive Pieces last night, perhaps not the best film but Dillane was absolutely terrific in it. His performance was truly heartbraking. Though I still think he’s a bit too soft to play someone like Stannis I am warming up to the idea and I do see what you mean. I’ll watch John Adams in the foreseeable future but I am a bit put off by the idea of having to watch 7 x 90 mins since I useually don’t have that much spare time. Also Dillane isn’t in the first film but I doubt I can just start with the second one. Anyway I’ll get round to it. It seems like a great series in any case.

In John Adams, Jefferson starts to lose his damned mind because he feels so strongly about America’s obligation to the French during their revolution. In delivering this, Dillane is not a yeller, he’s a terrifying seether. “Unyielding” is how Stannis is described. I think the tone is perfect. The simple statement in the teaser sent chills up my spine, because I knew it was Dillane immediately, and I think he’s going to be stunning.

First of all, I feel your pain and agree that Peter Mullan would be an awesome Blackfish. I dreamed Gary Oldman was cast last night..but then I realized it was a stupid dream. I think Danny Huston could rock Ser Bryden though.
King Arthur is my get drunk with the boys movie. It has Mads Mikkelsen(“I aim for the middle”), Ray Stevenson and Ray Winstone, Stellan Skarsgaard, Joel Edgerton (who is finally getting his career noticed) Ioan Gruffud and well with the exception of Clive and Keira they are all total badasses so regardless of the quality of the film (ennhhhh) I enjoy every bombastic second of it. It’s an OTT dumb fun movie. And Dillane’s Merlin is totally watchable, I wanted more of him!

Unfortunately I love to parse, analyze and go through a film with a fine tooth comb! It’s what I live for. I get entertained by any film as long as their well-made regardless of how the subject matter might affect me. I think No Country for Old Men is amazing, I’ve seen it many times. Just my cup of tea. I like to slum and watch junk like King Arthur and Conan the Barbarian or Terminator 2. I can even appreciate them on a formal level as well. So regarding the quality of DILLANE’s performance we’ll just have to agree to disagree. To me it is a nuanced, subtle performance that slowly burns a hole into the screen (sorry I don’t see effeminate’ in there at all, quite the opposite actually, but I can see how someone would think so) while Wilkinson (an actor in DILLANE’s caliber) is full of gusto and eccentric and plays that well but he didn’t have the range of DILLANE IMHO.
If I come off as arrogant I apologize but you mentioning its not your ‘thing’ probably means that there will be many cases where I won’t see eye to eye with you(or anybody) about films. It’s my gift…and my curse.

I meant to point out that the other Epic (I can’t keep track of you guys anymore) said that John Adams was a depressing historical biopic. What I got from that is that was one of the reasons why he didn’t like it. He said it wasn’t great because it was too much like a biopic and it was depressing. I merely pointed out IN MY OPINION depressing movies can be enjoyable as well. My first example was going to be Schindler’s List but I said No Country for Old Men instead. My opinion again was that I don’t let tone or subject matter affect the way I respond to a film from a critical standpoint.

About Dillane’s Thomas Jefferson performance. It was genius. In fact; while reading book 5, I always imagined Roose Bolton to look and act pretty much like that same Jefferson. But that being said, I’m sure he’ll be as awesome in the role of lord Stannis. Nina Gold sure knew(and knows) what she is doing. :)

My reference for Huston mostly comes from his performances in The Constant Gardener and The Proposition (amazing movie) which by the way…how cool would it be if Nick Cave (who wrote the Proposition screenplay) sung the Rains of Castamere?
I agree that an unknown actor would be best for the BF but Edmure Tully, I have just the man. Stephen Waddington who played Duncan in The Last of the Mohicans and Lord Buckingham in the first two episodes of the Tudors. He would be a perfect Edmure and is very near Michelle Fairley’s age.
As for Lynch’s Dune. It was my first exposure to that universe. But the novel is fantastic, I can see the backbone of ASOIAF in Herbert’s work. The first three books are all you need to read: Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. A fantastic story that once read will make you either love Lynch’s depiction more or hate it completely. The 2000 Sci-Fi miniseries is watchable, and has more of the novel in it, but its very low budget so prepare for that. Its followed by Children of Dune in 2003 which combines books 2 and 3. Much bigger budget! I adore that minseries, the music, the sets, the script and the majority of the acting (love Julie Cox’s Irulan, she was my pick for Melisandre) is great. Worth a look. I believe Martin said that Dune did inspire him as well. You can see the similiarities. In fact instead of the proposed Dune movie coming out in a few years I would rather see an HBO miniseries in lieu of Peter Jacksonish movie trilogy.

That’s all well and good. But I have question for you: do you speak the way you do to us when your hanging with your friends?
There’s two answers that can come out this inquiry:
A) Probably not cuz you wouldn’t have many friends or
B) You and your friends are like-minded.
It’s okay to have a different opinion on things (the world would be boring if we didn’t) but don’t act like yours is the only perspective that matters. I.E the Road is not absurd: YOU think its absurd. If I was sitting down at a table with you and you forcefully dismissed my opinion like that I would get up and leave.
Here’s an ideal exchange: Well I think its great. Here’s why. Now you tell me why. Oh I see where your coming from in that regard, I’m not convinced though. But you can see where I’m coming from right? I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.
Like that.
Not that it makes much difference but I will probably get another sarcastic riposte to this as well. Maybe I’m just hoping against hope that your not a troll.

Its not that I care about posting under my actual name, its just that I’ve been posting as the goat for two or three years here. Brand recognition. Same reason the show’s title won’t change to “Clash of Kings” or “Song of Ice and Fire.” Lately, however, the site will post my comments using my fb profile even though I’m not logged in. Whatever, blame Microsoft, or Zuckerberg, or the tooth fairy, there are more important things to worry about.

Personally I chuckled at your metaphor on sarcasm. Well done.You seem to have a great rhythm when it comes to language. As for the rest of it, many could construe it as you mocking the previous poster. If you are simply having fun then that’s fine, enjoy yourself by all means but be prepared for the reality that people may not get your sense of humour and will object to it. So to reitterate, you have an undeniable grasp of wit, so try to let us in on the joke rather than being part of your punchline. I simply get the impression that you are hunting us less sardonically inclined peeps for sport.
Also I didn’t say that you lacked friends all I said was I couldn’t imagine hanging out with someone who speaks so condescendingly to people all the time. It would make it difficult nay? At least in my perspective it would.
Also Hemingway’s Mad Max: a great description for The Road. It doesn’t make it absurd in my opinion, it brings reality and-depending if you like Hemingway- eloquence to a predominatly maligned genre. Are you into sci-fi at all, or fantasy? And if not what do you like about ASOIAF? The fact that it is more grounded and realistic than the majority of the Descendants of Tolkien out there?

Joshua Taylor, hopefully you have proven that you are not a troll and that you fight trolls to everyone at this point. Maybe your next debate won’t attack a person’s character. What I would have done in your shoes is dissect what ‘depressing’ means to defend your show instead of bringing up whatever depressing movies you are convinced are great.
Do you guys know these boards are moderated? Instead of calling someone troll, you can email a mod about it. You’d be amazed how much nicer this place will get when ppl stop calling each other trolls all the time. Keep it positive.

The truth is only intuitively I understand the use of the word troll here…and to be honest, I don’t like it that much. When someone doesn´t like something is likely to be quite emphatic about it. I understand that it may become a mess if all opinions are strong, but doesn´t bother me.

But you know, it makes me think about how much faith people have to one another. Why do we have to reach such negative judgments about people we only know from a few anonymous letters? Or maybe this is only a reminder to use more smiley faces and other symbols that indicate friendly intentions when writing among a pack of wolves hungry for casting news.

You seem to enjoy your online persona. Therefore I will take your more sarcastic, acidic comments with a grain of salt. I feel that you are in the mindfame that you are detached from any emotional reaction to your posts due to your sense of detachement created by the anonymity of the internet. Unfortunately in this case, there are people (like me) who find these chats almost the equivalent of face to a face conversation. They can be that familiar to us. Sad? Yes, but there it is.
And I automatically concede that my great and depressing argument (in the matter of tone and of context) was rather weak. Perhaps I shouldn’t put together a grand literary thesis at 1′o clock in the morning. But despite this, you have pointed out these faults of mine in your last two posts. Yet you have not acknowledged my opinion of your wordsmithery and vernacular agility of which I greatly esteem. Not very fair huh? It’s almost like your skimming my posts.
Now if you can simply acknowledge my points on the niceties of message board behaviour, particularly the recognition that some people don’t like being talked down to, in an objective matter instead of making another snide comment than I promise to the Seven that I will never again festoon you with the mantle of ‘troll’.

But I don’t like people who think that their own opinion is the only one that holds value and that they use sarcasm and snide comments in response to objective arguments to the contrary. This is my point. You’re not a troll, since you obviously care about the subject matter, and have interesting thoughts regarding it. Despite that, you (are compelled to?) act like a troll, over and over and over.
The lack of direwolves hurt us all (how did we fail to ever start a Lack of Direwolves support group, btw?), but that doesn’t equate with unbridled trolling. “Let’s keep it positive,” indeed. I’ll hold you to that.

However, I was curious about the origin of the term, so I looked it up and got this from Dictionary.com:
“Bell Cow (n.): a cow, especially the lead cow of a herd, having a bell attached to a collar around its neck so that the herd can be located easily.”
