It’s time for the next round of WiCnet Season One Awards. The TV series, not bound by the POV structure of the books, took the opportunity of showing us some scenes that didn’t exist in the book. This poll includes our picks for the 5 best new or added scenes. Vote for your favorite and then take to the comments to discuss.

Cersie and Robert scene. Wonderfull acting and writing.
Mads JensenQuote Reply
You left out the scene between Varys and Little Finger. Wasn’t my favorite but a lot of people liked it so I expected to see it here. Por que?

Ooooooooooh…I love the first scene where the Starks are introduced, as it sets the tone for Arya’s character without a single word of dialogue from her! But I also really love the scene with Robert and Cersei discussing their marriage…it adds great depth of character to their relationship and shows how people’s personal feelings are often cast aside for “the good of the realm” and all that. Harsh stuff, and really fits in line with Cersei’s later developments in making her a more sympathetic character, even though she is a cruel bitch. :D

Jaime/Tywin scene.

None of these scenes delighted me. The Robert-Cersei conversation was nice to look at however, because it let both of them show the other sides of the characters.
I may be the only one, but I think that more important to the story were the sex scenes with Theon/Ros and Renly/Loras. They showed the motives behind some actions which we probably see in season two.

Voted for the Stark’s introduction anyway.

Gotta go with Robert and Cersei. The acting and chemistry (or lack thereof) perfectly captured the couple’s nonchalant contempt for one another.

Both of the Varys/Littlefinger dialogues in the throne room were my favourite added scenes, surprised they are not listed.

How is “Play with her ass!” not one of the choices?
JK, Ross needs to be written out of the series. I voted for Jorah even though “Winter is coming for him” was unbelievably bad ass. Also loved the deer skinning scene – Charles Dance FTW.
I actually hated the Cercei/Robert scene. Let me explain. Wonderfully written, shot and acted, but it humanized Cercei. I felt they went a very long way towards trying to make her the sympathetic villain. It worked for Viserys (of all people) but somehow it never clicked with Cercei for me. I think part of it has to do with them changing certain aspects of her character – I really took issue with her giving birth to a black headed (therefore Baratheon) child. Tyrion explicitly states once that if she had borne Robert even one child it would have thrown off suspicion, but then she “wouldn’t have been Cercei”. She even says herself (to Ned in the Godswood) that “Robert got me with child once…” and then she had moon tea or tansy tea or whatever and got rid of it. Anyway, mild rant over. Generally I liked the added scenes, just not when they change characterization!

for the first time I can not find an option which I really like (altough I like the fact that LF/Varys scene is not there because the writing was awful IMO).
The one I like it is Tywin/Jaime. I think both characters are well defined in that scene.
From the list I vote for “Starks are introduced” because there is enough information, with little dialogue, in a few shots… and Arya´s face was great!
andreaQuote Reply
The scene with Robert, Barristan, and Jaime talking war stories was my favorite. Mark Addy was brilliant in that scene!!!!!!!!

It was the first added scene that came to my mind as well…
I suspect Winter from coming up with six nominees for each award category and then delete one of the more popular ones to create extra discussion ;-)
And FWIW, I voted the Robert/Cersei scene as it is the one I remember best. (aside from the Stark scene, which I might remember even better as it is more visual, but although it introduced the Starks very neatly, shouldn’t really win any prizes for great writing IMO)

Robert and Cersei, easy.

Robert and Cersei was great. Was my first choice til I remembered Thorne’s monologue in the Sam/Jon scene. I developed a whole new respect for the character after that. Kind of odd since I hate him in the books. So it got my vote.
patryn0Quote Reply
Well my favourite scene in the whole series by a country mile (never mind added) was Robert, Barristan, and Jaime talking about their first kills but this is inexplicably missing from the poll!?
This meant I had to go with ‘and yet here I stand’ as Iain Glenn and Harry Lloyd were an absolute treat all season, substantially improving both characters.
Dickon ManwoodyQuote Reply
Even before I saw the choices, the Robert and Cersei scene popped up immediately in my head. Absolutely my pick…and as for humanizing villains, that’s exactly why I love Martin’s writing–all the shades of grey. Cersei is awful, but I can absolutely understand her motivations.
kerningQuote Reply
I agree completely with Night’s King. The Robert -Cersei scene was well acted but I hated the changes to Cersei’s character, the whole black haired baby thing, etc. I’d have to go with Viserys-Jorah or Robb’s message to Tywin of the choices given, but my real added favorite was Robert/Jaime/Ser Barristan for sure.
persephone88Quote Reply
Definitely Robert-Cersei.
I don’t think that Cersei has been changed much, to be honest. They didn’t change the fact that she’s a total bitch, but I don’t think it hurt that they put in the part where she loses the baby and everything. Certain parts of the character that you get from the book (especially later on in the series) make her out to be someone that you can sympathize with… But they will likely lose a lot of that in translation to the screen. It seems only fitting to me that they added things in to make her appear more human early on so that people actually feel for her in the later books instead of saying “Karma’s a bitch, bitch.” From what I’ve drawn, the major strength of this series is that there isn’t really a bad guy (except maybe the White Walkers). Everybody is a good guy as long as you’re walking in the right shoes. If they did nothing for Cersei, that might not come to fruition, and the series would lose a lot of its appeal, I think.
GillQuote Reply
Nights King,
That addition really confused me too…it’s hard to tell whether the Cersei of the series really did give birth to that little black-haired boy, or whether she was lying. According to the books, that would have been a lie told to manipulate Catelyn, but according to the show…who knows? I definitely think they humanized her way too much in the first half of the season, but thankfully she started to show her true colours in the last few episodes.
JMQuote Reply
I figured that the Tywin/Jaime scene would have won this, hands down. I’m surprised it wasn’t listed.
I went with the Cersei/Robert scene from these choices, though Sam/Jon was a close second.
ANiceChiantiQuote Reply
I don’t think any of these scenes were among the best added ones, though I voted for Jorah/Viserys. Probably my favorite scene in the whole season (not just favorite added one) was Tywin’s introduction. Jaime went from cocky bastard to insecure child with Tywin berating him. I love that Charles Dance was skinning a real stag, and so convincingly (apparently they had like 50 takes). Such a brilliant scene.
Anyways, I am not the biggest fan of the Littlefinger/Varys scene, as its too heavy-handed and kind of overemphasizes the point that they’re rivals.
JMQuote Reply
exactly!

I’m not a fan of humanizing Cersei, but I still had to vote for that scene. The acting was incredible (and I love Robert).
LexQuote Reply
Nothing could be farther from the truth. I sit there deliberating for hours, going over all the scenes in my head, getting input from HmR and FaB, watching YouTube clips, trying to determine which scenes will be the consensus best. My ultimate goal is to go into the thread and see, those are a great 5 nominees, tough to choose, etc. But invariably I end up getting complaints on how I missed this one or that one. Or how they all suck.
It’s literally impossible to narrow it down to 5 best for each category so that no one complains I missed their favorite scene. It’s kind of annoying actually to spend all that time and still get complaints. I think next season I will just throw up huge lists so that no one can complain I missed this scene or that line or this actor.
(PS Didn’t mean to pick on you here, I just wanted to get this off my chest and your comment provided a convenient spring board to do it.)
There, I feel better now. :)
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Nights King,
I actually liked the Sam & Jon scene because it changed Sam’s character. Sam in the books is just such a wimp, I have a hard time identifying with him. The TV version of Sam is just kind of a repressed nerd. The change is enough to make me believe his friendship with Jon is real and not just out of pity on Jon’s part.

I’m going to have to say Jorah confronting Viserys. All of the others were there to strengthen positions I was already aware of, whereas the Jorah/Viserys exchange gave me something new. I think my favorite is Eddard Stark telling Yoren that Arya is at Baylor´s feet, I do not remenber this happening in the book.

Very hard to choose from. You do a great job narrowing the field Winter-is-Coming, and ultimately, I still debate on which to choose. I ultimately chose the Stark introduction because it was one of the few times we see them happy before it all goes to hell.
Off topic: There is a great interview with Jennifer Ehle on her love for the book series and the TV series and why she ultimately chose not to commit to the series. http://tinyurl.com/3flw2g2

Honestly, none of these. I’ve liked your choices for most of these polls, but this list has me scratching my head. There were a lot of added scenes that I really enjoyed, and none of them made the cut. All of these are scenes I’m either ambivalent about or ones I actively dislike.
5 better scenes off the top of my head:
- War stories with Robert, Jaime, and Barristan
- Tywin skinning the stag
- Drogo vs. Mago
- Tyrion, Yoren, and Benjen at Castle Black
- Grand Maester Pycelle and Ros

Also not a fan of the changes to Cersei. Nulls that one for me.
Jorah and Viserys was a nice little addition that fitted with the original story so I’m gonna go with that.
Another one I liked was Jory and Jaime in episode 4.
I’m not a fan of a lot of the new scenes because the writers allow them to go for 7-8 minutes when George’s own BETTER scenes from the book get chopped to rations.
War Stories, Robert & Cersei and Viserys in the bath were all too long and a bit of wankery if you ask me (as far as writing is concerned).
Jordan HealeyQuote Reply
I think you could have easily had 10+ nominations here…
My favorite added scene in the first season is Viserys & Doreah. Doreah’s actress (insert name here) is very beautiful but my reason for it being a favorite isn’t sensual. (for added sex in the series this is the only scene I cared for at all) It added some humanity and depth to Viserys that the book and tv show didn’t capture otherwise. It actually made it easier to feel sorry for him. (I work on a psych unit – madness and obsession is not a full time thing… I love this little moment of clarity for V) I love how he remembers the dragon skulls in the throne room.
Of the above nominated options, I voted for Robert & Cersei. It was fantastically well done, and a favorite scene in the entire series as well.
Honorable mention…
Varys and Littlefinger – awesome scene!

Renly / Loras, definitely. Also, my main beef with the intro scene is that in the books, Arya doesn’t know how to shoot a bow and desperately wants to learn. So her perfect marksmanship in the intro makes no sense. Anyway. Butterfly effect.

That was difficult, I would have voted for the Tywin/Jaime/stag scene but it’s not an option so I went with the “Tell Lord Tywin winter is coming for him…” scene, which was somehow a very memorable moment for me. The Robert/Cersei scene was another great one, but like some people already said it, I also had mixed feelings about the changes they made to Cersei’s character and that stopped me from voting for it (BUT it was still very well-written and well-acted, that’s for sure).
Kit-KatQuote Reply
I don’t generally like to complain, and I can kind of understand why the Tywin/Jaime scene might have been overlooked, but I think that was, hands down, one of the best scenes in the series, added or otherwise.

Yeah, sorry for that, I’m guilty on multiple occasions…
If you select only five nominees (which is what award shows do, so I’m not criticizing that), it’s a given that not all people will find the nominee of their choice. And it seems to be common in the human nature to find one’s own opinion just that bit more important than other people’s, so unfortunately I think you’re bound to get complaints…
That would be an option yes, but this would take away any ‘controversy’ of the Awards, and what is a good Award Show without the occasional controversy ;-)
Don’t worry about it, you have every right to vent your frustration, and as I have shared my disappointment on a couple of occasions on this and earlier award categories, I was a better person than most to respond to. I usually don’t shy away from sharing my opinion, positive or negative, and have no problem with people disagreeing with them (and appreciating their reasoning). As long as we all back up our opinions with reason and don’t resort to trolling (or labeling people with other opinions as trolls), that is…
Glad about that. Whenever you need a point of focus to vent your frustration at, just use me, I can take it :-)
And to conclude, just to be clear: even if the choices presented don’t always include my personal favorites, I really do appreaciate the effort you put into these Awards (and the rest of the website), and I’m sure that goes for 99.9% of the other ‘complainers’ as well!

Definitely had to vote for Robert and Cersei. Brilliant scripting, brilliant performances, also builds a bit of humanity in Cersei.
EdibleBrainQuote Reply
The Varys/LF scene was a bit heavyhanded but what I did like about it was that it threw the viewers off where their loyalties lie. Littlefinger talks about going to the king (the good guy) and thus making him look like one of the good guys as well since his loyalty is to Robert. Varys talks about going to the queen (the bad guy) so it makes him look like someone who can’t be trusted since his loyalty seems to be toward the Lannisters.
But in the end, it was the complete opposite. Littlefinger is the one to betray Ned while Varys is shown to be his “only friend”. I thought that was a nice little twist.
Argilac the ArrogantQuote Reply
Jorah and Viserys all the way! As soon as I saw that as an option there was no contest (although I certainly like most of the other choices).
Count me as one more who wasn’t impressed with the Varys/Littlefinger exchanges. I think they could have been more effective were they shorter, or limited to a targeted quip between scene changes, etc. As it was, they felt a bit forced and unnatural and as others have mentioned: heavy-handed. None of this has anything to do with the actors btw. I thought Conleth Hill was one of the best in the show, and despite my dislike of the direction the writers went in with the character, Aiden Gillen did a decent job.

Tar Kidho’s latestet post (I have yet to figure out how to quote) changed my mind. The internet as a whole needs more posters like you, mate.
I enjoy these polls a lot because I’m always interested to see how others react to and perceive the various aspects of the books and show, especially if their impressions and focus differ from my own. Any discussion should broaden the horizon, after all, imho. So, keep it coming!

I voted Jorah-Viserys, because it was such an unexpected Mormont easter egg.
Close second badass Robb, then the archery scene. The Jon scene was ruined for me by the mention of Roz. The Cersei-Robert scene… meh. It was beautiful, and I don’t reject the chance of these characters expressing such feelings, but to me it felt artificial. Hard to explain.
Blackfish BluesQuote Reply
Jorah and Viserys for the win! I remember feeling so sad for Viserys because you get a glimpse of the pressure he feels, and you see that he knows the people don’t love him, while showing that he still doesn’t comprehend that their love and respect has to be earned, it isn’t just given.
MiraxQuote Reply
Definitely the Bran archery scene. It displayed the close family feeling of the Starks and showed us tom-boy Arya. All of the scenes nominated were good, but this was the best for me.
PuzzlnutQuote Reply
For me, it’s really a tie between Robb and Jorah. Robb for “Coming into his own”-badassery. Jorah for “I have my khaleesi’s back”-badassery. I ended up voting for the Jorah-Viserys scene, because Harry’s acting somehow hit the spot. The other scenes didn’t blow my hair back. I simply cannot see Cersei and Robert having this sort of civil, calm conversation (although the acting was stellar). In my mind, those two ignore/avoid each other, at best. The Sam and Jon girl talk struck me as ever so slightly cringe-worthy. And while the Stark opening scene was heart-warming and a neat contrast to the chilling North of the Wall scene, it somehow never stood out for me.
I will say that – with the absolute exception of every single Ros scene – I enjoy added scenes, because they give the writers of an adaption the chance to shine, they can be an effective solution to the POV-problem and they give viewers like myself who have read the books something fresh to chew on.

This website is mainly about the tv series and I’m not sure the site runners are interested in a thread like that… But you might find what you’re looking for on Westeros.org for instance (never frequented that board though, so not sure). As many of us know that later in the series when Arya meets Lem and Anguy she must say at least 3 times how much she wished she knew how to shoot a bow. About giving you too much credit – Something I disagree with doesn’t necessarily annoy me, it’s the tone/wording that makes all the difference, and I’ve found yours to be generally very balanced, coherent and fair, is all. In fact, that is mostly true for this entire site. Otherwise, why come here, right? But there has been some sniping on some of the threads. I think my only real frustration with the series is with Renly and Loras. First of all, I think it was the only real miscast in the show. I also preferred Loras as the young, talented and cocky knight. Sure, a little more one-dimensional but it’s better than the effeminate route they went with in the show IMO. I felt the whole gay shaving scene seemed like HBO’s forced way of appealing to gay audiences.
They could have had the whole gay backstory between Renly and Loras and made it itnersting but I felt they didn’t make it believable at all. Anyone else feel this way?
And to answer the question I have to go with the Tywin/Jaime scene (the stag was a nice touch) and the Cersei/Robert scene. By humanizing her in season one, her descent into increasingly erattic and paranoiac behaviors in later seasons might even be more impactful.

If anything she’s worse. In her POV chapters she fantasises about killing almost everyone she meets. Reading those chapters made me feel dirtier than anything else in the whole series. She’s a fucking psychopath!

Anyway, between the options I pick the scene of Robert&Cersei, awesome one too.

Tell Lord Tywin, winter is coming for him. 20,000 Northerners marching south to see if he really does shit gold.
Before that, Robb was just the eldest Stark boy~, blahblah, marching to save his father, but seven hells, he really becomes “The Young Wolf” here. Richard Madden ftfw.
