Rose Leslie talks Ygritte and Game of Thrones

She’s only been a part of the cast officially for a couple of days, but in this interview Rose Leslie manages to talk more about the series, the books and her role than all the other new cast members combined. The interview comes from Leicester Square TV and was conducted a week ago at the London premiere of the film Perfect Sense. Thanks to commenter Lisa for the link!

Winter Is Coming: A great interview! I liked Leslie as Ygritte before (pronounced EYE-grit, it seems… I always said Ye-GREET in my head), but I really like her now.

tek, the important points from the interview are:

She starts filming in a couple weeks in Iceland. She is contracted for seasons two and three. She has begun physical training for the role. She is currently reading the books. She pronounces Ygritte as EYE-grit. Her favorite characters are Robert and Cersei.

Can’t watch the video on this computer right now, so I’ll have to save that for later. But I’m surprised by the pronunciation as well. I always called her “Ye-GREET.” Though I guess Ye-GREET sounds more French and EYE-grit sounds more Norse/German/wildling.

Oh well. I always called Catelyn “KATE-lynn” until the show. My name is spelled the same way as hers but with a K, so I just assumed it would be pronounced that way. But now she’s Cat-eh-lynn, so I guess Ygritte will soon enough be Eye-grit.

Rose comes across very well in the interview so that certainly bodes well. She also seems quite confident that it’ll get a third season which is good to hear. I prefer Roy Dotrice’s pronunciation which is “Ee-Grit”, but I’m not that bothered if they go with “Eye-Grit”.

Knurk, right, she’s contracted for a third season, but that contract will be voided if HBO decides to not order a third season. So just because she mentioned series 3 doesn’t mean it is guaranteed they will film it. Although, at this point, the odds of HBO NOT picking the show up for a third season are slim to none.

I always pronounced it Ee-grit, because that’s how I pronounce the Y at the start of Yvonne. This probably won’t change my pronunciation, though, I still read Catelyn as Kate-lin not Cat-lin.

More importantly, though, she seems really enthuiastic, which is always a great start and having seen her in Downton I have no worries. Also, she said one of her favourite things to read was the Wall and the North, so that’s pretty fitting.

I agree completely- they’d be crazy not to pick up season 3. I guess in a year we’ll know more about the rest. I’ve read that they’ve planned through TRW – but there are things in AFFC and ADWD that I NEED to see filmed.

Drogon riding!! House of Black and White (esp the basement)! Sansa’s descent from the Eerie…. Quentin… Darkstar and the demise of our spoiled knight..

I really hope the cost/ benefit analysis and D&Ds schedules allow for them to finish the whole series.

I, too, always pronounced Ee-GRITT, because that sounds more Nordic to me for some reason, but, hey, it’s just pronounciation. I also pronounced Catelyn – KATE-lyn, Daenerys – DAE-ne-rys, Viserys as VI-serys, Cersei – Cer-SAY etc. Wow, I’m really excited to see both her and Gilly on screen (and I really regret them not having any scenes together … and, no, I was simply talking about communication).

I’m more concerned with seeing things that happen in ASOS but after the RW. Joff’s wedding, Littlefinger’s and Lysa’s reveals, Tyrion killing Tywin, Arya abandoning the hound… That half of the book has the most twists and excitement of the entire series!

She definately has the face for a more ‘television Ygritte’ than the book description, even though the book doesn’t make her technically ugly. :)
I think she’ll be great in the role. She seems to have a lively, bubbly personality that won’t have any problems portraying Ygritte. I can see some pretty good chemistry forming between she and her ‘relation’ on screen. Should make for a really good hidden cave scene. Hope we get that far.

Obviously I don’t represent HBO, but with as much money as they’ve tossed the show’s way, and their conservative attitude regarding ordering more than 10 episodes per season, it seems likely that unless season 2 absolutely TANKS we can expect to see a third season.

It’s extra helpful to note that Boardwalk Empire, which is also quite expensive and is using potentially more expensive actors, just got renewed for a third season even though its ratings have sharply declined since the pilot.

I’ve just found out about BE renewal, which is a great news (I love it). That basically says that even if GoT stays with the +/- first season finale ratings, the renewal is guaranteed. With all the hype and the recognition Got has right now, the ratings will only go up from here.

MW: Mm hmm. Nice to know they are talking internally about season 3 already.

A common misconception. They may be talking internally about season 3 but Leslie mentioning it in her interview is not proof of that. All it means is she has signed a contract for two seasons. But the contract isn’t a guarantee that those seasons will take place, it’s there to guarantee that Leslie will be there IF they happen. Most of the main cast signed 5-year contracts prior to season one, but that doesn’t mean that HBO has already committed to, or even discussed the possibility of, 5 years of Game of Thrones.

Mads Jensen, she kinda reminds me of Blake Lively. Both in her looks and the sound of her voice. I’m guessing she has more acting talent though.

I’m not familiar with Lively’s voice, only her face, but from that video Leslie reminds me more of Emma Stone, especially some of her facial expressions, but her voice a little bit, too.

ALSO. Crazy theory time involving Ros. Warning ADWD spoilers:

Has anyone considered yet that they may intend to replace Jeyne Poole with Ros? Now that they’ve established her connection with Theon, having him be forced to give her away to Ramsey as the false-Arya would be dramatic for him.

Too bad your taking it out on an actress who shows nothing but enthusiasm for the show and given her performance in Downton Abbey also has the acting chops to pull off the character. Also she was kind of interviewed on the spot about it, especially when she was initially talking about a movie she did with Ewan McGregor. And even still, I can’t conceive how she comes off like an “idiot”.

Out of all of the youngins who are descendants of the famous or blue bloods, (Harry, Kit, Oona, and now Rose), I still think Harry Lloyd being the great-great-great grandson of Charles Dickens is the most impressive. Dickens is an artist rather than an aristocrat, and is buried in the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey. (When Geoffrey Rush stepped on him in The King’s Speech I chuckled).

    Joshua Taylor,

    Hollyoak,

Even though I am a sucker for Ingenue, not to mention a real redhead, I am not as enamored by her as others. I think she is a great choice and by all account a good actor.

However, in the interview clip posted, she did have in multiple occasions repeated the questions before answering them and then seemed to force smile after that. After awhile, it could become a bit grating. Sort of performing like a candidate in a debate. I do know that some people genuinely respond like that and not put on a performance.

In addition, her face in the interview was flooded with bright light which has the effect of flattened the contrast and smoothed her facial contour. I think Ygritte will look more like her photos than in this video.

This is not nitpicking Rose Leslie’s appearance or demeanor. Personally, I think she is a beautiful young lady (Can’t wait for the cave scene given this is HBO ;-D ). This is just an attempt to show members of House Gatewatch that some of the less glowing receptions of Ms Arbuthnot-Leslie’s interview are not coming out of thin air or an frivilous way to draw attention.

Disclaimer: don’t know WIJB. Don’t agree with many of his gloomy views on GoT.

    Joshua Taylor,

I have experiences like yours too. Guys just think that all beautiful actresses are bimbles.

The only reason why I think there is some beef in WIJB’s post is that even though Rose Leslie gave fresh, real and exciting answers, somehow she couldn’t bring about a smooth transition from those to the “always finish your answer with a bright smile” interview technique. Hence the WIJB remark about bringing better acting skill in the show than as an interviewee.

I think its a lie they/we tell them/ ourselves when it comes to creatures they find alluring but are nonetheless unattainable. It’s a mechanism they use to detach themselves and “come back to reality”. I think it’s also middle-class pride getting in the way when dealing with actors of both genders. “I work hard for a living to pay my bills and they just dress up and look pretty.”
I think you are right on regarding the “beef” of WIJB’s point in that in his opinion she failed the interview and did not impress him. That’s at least one grain of sympathy I will give actors is that beyond their actual job (performing on stage or on screen) their profession carries into their public life. They are “acting” all the time, thus “working” all the time.

But them’s the breaks when your making millions of dollars.

SugarVampire: the “always finish your answer with a bright smile” interview technique

If judgment falls on exactly when the smile is supposed to come in during the end of an interview question answered, then we would all be easily experts on what makes an actor good. But there is a lot more than that isn’t there?

    Other random thoughts:

Fans that watched the video and immediately thought ‘action’ = sex scenes. I think that says more about themselves than her.

When she answered who is her favorite character, I believe she lied there, and she had some trouble not saying Jon Snow because that would have been ‘weird’. I found that to be cute. Then again, maybe Ygritte is her favorite character, that would have been a great answer.

If ppl want to criticize her I think they will find more meaningful material to draw from in the show than from a two minute interview.

    Joshua Taylor:
    Hollyoak,

Reminds me of a couple of people I know. One guy thinks every pretty actress is an idiot. They just “rub” him the wrong way. Which is strange, because he is a really nice guy with a long term girlfriend and even she is blown away at how misogynistic he gets when he speaks about actresses. It’s weird.

I’ve (briefly) dated a few guys like that. I think they probably got shot down by some really mean pretty girl when they were young and hate attractive women forever because they feel rejected by them. Young, pretty girls can sometimes be unbelievably mean.
I have a close friend who was obese as a child and was taunted a great deal. Whenever he meets a girl or a girl is flirting with him these days he goes out of his way to be really aggressive and mean to her as a defense mechanism. He’s a really sweet guy in every other respect but he wants to reject women before they can reject him. It’s sad. He says the same kind of things about actresses being bimbos too.

    Queensmoot,

Many actors I have met and know on a personal level (the kind of actor that haven’t found a break yet, if ever) are two faced and aggressive. I think that is just something that is needed to survive a very competitive arena.

I avoid actors in general, I do not trust them!!!! But nevertheless we need them to play the roles of our favorite characters!!!!

Don’t know whether you have missed my post earlier stating that Rose Leslie is a good casting choice and she probably will do a good job as Ygritte.

    JackSparrow,

Agreed, Emma Stone is who she reminded me of.

The casting is perfect. Was ambivalent about Ygritte in the books (her catch phrase was a bit annoying) but I’m very excited to see her on screen now!

Jon is my favorite character. I definitely see her saying “You know nothing Jon Snow!” :)
