George has announced (one of?) the last remaining role: Edward Dogliani will be playing Rattleshirt, Lord of Bones. There is very little on IMDb on the actor, but I am sure that is him, since GRRM mentions jumping, zebras, and firearms. A more detailed CV and more photos can be found at Dogliani’s agency’s website.
… I’ll just flat out announce that the part of the Lord o’ Bones, the wildling raider mocked as Rattleshirt, will be played by EDWARD DOGLIANI. Welcome to Westeros, Edward. I’m looking forward to seeing you in your bone armor.
Hear Me Roar: So, is this the last role announced? And is Dogliani menacing enough?

First!
He looks a bit like Russel Crowe. With all the makeup and costumes he’ll wear. he’ll be menacing enough.

Cool! I always imagined Rattleshirt as more wiry than this, but not a huge deal. Hope Edward’s passport is up-to-date as he should be heading to Iceland soon!
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
I pictured him looking more wiry as well, but it really doesn’t matter at all what the character looks like anyway.
Welcome to the cast!

I guess you couldn’t make it very long as a wildling leader without some bulk on ya. I’m ok with this.

Huh… thought it was Russell Crowe at first.
Natasa AnastasiouQuote Reply
Good to see, was worried he might have gotten cut. Can’t wait to see him in costume.
As to whether it’ll be the last… Well I’m still hoping we at least get a Mojen character (one of the Reeds to accompany Bran is better than none) and I’d love to see Ramsay cast for this season, although I know it wouldn’t be impossible to push back his stuff until season 3 and still get (most of) the impact.
It’s a much discussed/maligned topic but I’m really not sure where they are going to go with Bran this season if the Reeds/a Reed doesn’t turn up. They have a significant impact on him even during his time as Prince, it’s not just about them saying ‘Green Dreams!’ and being there to tell stories and stab frogs on the long march North. Osha can replace them phsyically to some extent but what about their impact on Bran? Osha has a completely different worldview etc..
If it’s just a case of them turning up next season then I’m very curious as to how they pull that off. Although thinking about it having Bran and co come across them ‘on the road’ doesn’t seem unlikely…

Finally Rattleshirt! Have they anounced Mance?
Handmaidenof DanyQuote Reply
Mance doesn’t appear since ASOS, so it’s unlikely he will appear yet.
But you just can’t make an adaptation of ACOK without Reek, the Reeds or Edmure.

Cool, a poor man’s Russell Crowe.
Epic WunderscheisseQuote Reply
Now give us Reeds and Reek and I’ll be mostly happy.

Uuuh, I guess we all need an announcement for the casting of the Reeds, they are fan-favorites!
And a trailer for season 2 please!!!
Hedge KnightQuote Reply
I hope he will be good, I just hope they do justice to the armour of rattleshirt, all that bones and stuff, so cool! Also, how large are full grown direwolves? I personally dont want to see CGI used as i imagine them as the size of Adult Huskeys at full Age
Harry The HeirQuote Reply
There’s actually nothing in George’s post that hints that this is the final role cast this season, so I remain hopeful for others (the Reeds in particular).
I too imagined the Rattleshirt more wiry, but this is not at all a defining character trait, so I’m open for Mr. Dagliani. An unknown actor is always more interesting since you don’t know what to expect, and it is known that so far there have been very few disappointments. Welcome aboard Edward Scissorh…err…Rattleshirt!
Tar KidhoQuote Reply
They are significantly larger though…

Welcome, welcome! Now, where can I buy a rattleshirt?

Man, a shot of the Lord ‘O Bones in the teaser would go a long ways to get people amped up for season 2.
dizzy_34Quote Reply
First thing I thought as well. I pictured Rattleshirt to be a little older, but I can see it. He is missing the widow’s peak, but the eyebrow ridge is pretty spot-on.
TJ FlynnQuote Reply
The dire wolf, as GRRM has pointed out in a few interviews, was an actual wolf that went extinct about 10,000 years ago.
The Dire Wolf was larger than today’s Gray Wolf, averaging about 5 feet (1.5 meters ) in length and weighing between 110 pounds (50 kg) and 174 pounds (79 kg).
Today’s gray wolf, in comparison, also averages about 5 feet (1.5 meters) in length, but only averages about 79 pounds (36 kg) in total weight. (So about the same size lengthwise, but a lot lighter, and likely about half the muscle mass.)
Despite superficial similarities to the Gray Wolf, there were significant differences between the two species. The legs of the Dire Wolf were proportionally shorter and sturdier than those of the Gray Wolf, and its brain case was smaller than that of a similarly sized gray wolf.
TJ FlynnQuote Reply
i always imagined direwolfs much bigger then normal wolfs, like a tiger size or something. in the books everybody is always scared shitless of them… and the dead direwolf mother the starks found was kinda huge as well.
jkbQuote Reply
TJ Flynn,
Westeros direwolves are bigger and nastier than planet earth extinct direwolves. It is known.
Two FeathersQuote Reply
Harry The Heir,
If I remember correctly they’re described in the books as the size of a pony. Also we already know they’ll be using CGI for the direwolves.

Not exactly what I pictured (being that Rattleshirt is described as scrawny in the books), but he will do. Glad to see they finally cast the Lord o’ Bones.
Now we just need an announcement on the fan favorite brother & sister duo everyone has been waiting for… Harma and Halleck. Team Dogshead for the win!

he looks a bit like my brother… but I think my brother is more menacing. I will ask my brother to dye his hair, paint only one eyebrow, steal the bones of my dog to make a shirt, mistreat anyone who finds out there and then I tell how he looks. He´ll do it just fine I think. Both of them.
andreaQuote Reply
FINALLY some actual news! lol. I’m a little bummed about the lack of Reeds, since I love those two and do think both or one of them is important later in the story. Eventually Osha and Rickon will split from Bran and Hodor. Bran needs some kind of intellectual guide who can help him interpret his dreams.
As for Lord of Bones, he’s nothing like I pictured. I imagined a skinny, bony man perhaps a bit more gaunt in the face.
Has Mance been cast yet? I’m looking forward to the CGI when Melisandre disguises Mance as Rattleshirt in season, um, 6….?
DreamlifeQuote Reply
Haven’t read any of the comments. My first impression was “he’s not as gaunt or scary-looking as I imagined…” But I’m not too concerned. Just glad we have our Lord o’ Bones.

He loos far too sweet and adorable in that head shot. But with some makeup and messy hair, and a growl or two, he should be good :)

I’m liking this as well. Heh, looks like a little show rivalry is getting going. First shot of Rob from season 2, I think.

I’m surprised some still think the Reeds may be casted. See post on Nov 7: http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/11/day-108-filming-in-n-ireland-winding-down/.
Filming should be over by the 18th. Only item left is Iceland.
It ain’t happing folks. If they’re not in season 2 then I don’t see how they can be incorporated into future seasons. Osha will be taking the place of the Reeds. You can take it to the bank.
Chimp Force 1Quote Reply
I’m not phased as to whether the Reeds are either in season 2, or out. I’m completely impartial to them. However, I must admit that it seems a bit …..optimistic that some people are still holding out hope that the Reeds are going to be cast and in season 2.
It’s not THAT much of an issue to do some juggling/tweaking and have Osha (as an example) guide Bran on his trip. I know she doesn’t have the abilities that the Reeds have got so she can’t help Bran with warging etc…..but….and then they can maybe meet up with Bran in season 3 on the road North or something.

Very true. I’m sure the makeup and costume department will make him look much more intimidating than his head shot here. If they can turn Charlize Theron into “Monster”, I have no doubt they can ugly up this guy as well.

I always imagined Rattleshirt more gaunt-looking, but then again, I don’t think it’s a crucial trait for him. I’m not familiar with the actor, but I bet he’ll do just fine.
And still haven’t completely given up on the Reeds, even though I start susepcting that despite the Rickon-plot, they might have given Osha’s storyline a re-write for the show.
Lise BollumQuote Reply
They aren’t doing casting announcements the day the actors start filming. They could have been cast and already filmed their scenes. Even if they are not in season 2, they are required for season 3 for many reasons.

he might look peaceful on photo, but one has to see him act, I am sure he did well during the screen test and will do well in the series….
as to the Reeds adn Ramsey…I would not worry even if they don’t cast them for this season bacause I think they could be simply moved to season 3 same goes for Bolton bastard, the season might end with Theon taking overthe WF, young Bolton can be cast next seasonm and if they need him in season 2 it could be just an Extra – just like Jaquen and Rorge in season 1 – they can show him as dirty, hooded figure, in cage and then will cast a real actor for season 3, as to the Reeds instead of them coming to WF they might change the story so that Bran meets them after escaping from WF ,

Chimp Force 1,
Why can’t they be introduced in season 3 ? I mean they could just change the first part of the journey and the group heads towards the Riverlands (mommy), which means they must go through the marshes where they come up on the Reeds. Jojen goes all prophetic on Brans ass and we’re back on track……
Great that we get Rattleshirts band of wildlings.

What I didn’t know is, that a backtrack is automatically made on this site, everytime I paste a link on my blog. Considering most of you do not speak Slovenian(and let’s face it; I usually write in a very ungoogletranslateable manner), my apologies. :D

They could still shift the Reeds to season 3 if they want too. They have shown they will move different storylines around a bit..or even create some different story lines.

I alway pictured T-Bag from the Prison Break as Rattleshirt.
GiantsbabyQuote Reply
I can see them cutting the Reeds (and even put them back in in season 3 if they REALLY want) and the Tullys again, for now. Vargo Hoat until season 3, etc.
…but I really don’t see a feasible way they’re going to get around not having Ramsay.
EnterilQuote Reply
Flouride,
Methinks because of time constraints and plot issues, they might have postponed the large part of the Winterfell story (involving the Reeds, Ramsay, etc) till Season 3. They are clearly going to end this season (2) with Theon just taking Winterfell and hence repercussions upon Cat/Robb. This really makes their job easier for S2 as they already have a plethora of new characters to introduce.
Plus, they don’t have to write Theon off completely for S3/S4. I suppose the whole ‘Ramsay takes Winterfell’ saga would coincide with the RW to fully tap on the emotional force of having Starks demolished.
Luis AlejandroQuote Reply
Giantsbaby,
Now that you mention it, T-Bag is spot on.

Luis Alejandro,
What you suggest is possible, but we need Bran and Rickon to be ‘killed’ before Robb marries Jeyne and Catelyn releases Jaime since those events occur as part of the characters’ reaction to the news.

AlexQuote Reply
Whether he looks menacing or not is kinda irrelevant, imo. In the books it’s his armor that makes him distinctive. Like the Tickler he’s just one of those characters where how he looks like doesn’t matter, as long as it’s somewhat nondescript.
I have complete faith in the casting folks that he’ll be a good actor. There have been remarkably few miscastings so far.
