MGoT: Things not to do while working on Game of Thrones

A brief update to Making Game of Thrones that includes a mysterious photo. Here is what Cat Taylor had to say:

Do not get into detailed conversations about how fabulously creepy Director Neil Marshall’s film ‘The Descent’ was, when you are on your way to spend two days filming in the middle of the night… in caves.

And the photo with the post:
Night shoot

Winter Is Coming: Any guesses as to what the above set may be? Any extras or NI residents recognize the location? And I wonder what scene they were filming in a cave at night? *cough*StormsEnd*cough*

I immediately thought of the Jon and Ygritte scene but that doesn’t happen until ASOS. I would assume it’s either Storms End shadow birth or post-Blackwater. Both are Davos POV scenes.

It’s either special delivery at Storm’s End, or that part where Jon and Halfhand take a shortcut through a mountain while trying to flee.

Yes, but they don’t say that he directed the cave scene. Only that they talked about him before going to do the cave scene.

I don’t see why it would be Blackwater (or Davos post-Blackwater) as there’s no reason to film that at night. Or in a cave.

    EvilPicnic,

Well, Blackwater was filmed at night. Not sure if there would even be a post-Blackwater Davos scene this season, but you are right that it wouldn’t need to be at night.

    EvilPicnic,

I can think of a few reasons:

    - It’ll be scarier
    - The wildfire will look a lot more awesome at night
    - Given the limited budget, it’ll be cheaper to make the battle look big.

Said on another thread, filming Blackwater at night has the massive advantage of making it easier to disguise (lack of) numbers, and fire looks so much better against a dark backdrop.

I thought it was Ygritte and Jon’s scene in the caves at first as well, but then I, too, realized that that doesn’t happen until like 2/3 of the way through SoS >_< But yeah, given that, my bet's on shadowbaby, especially given all the water right outside the cave entrance (perfect for a certain nautical smuggler’s entrance). It could be blackwater i suppose, but didn’t they mention that they were filming inside the cave? I don’t remember any part of the the battle taking place underground.

Regardless, how awesome is that photo? Especially with the reflections on the water…looks really nice ^_^

I think you are correct. I know the quarry has a large flooded sand pit. Maybe they re jigged the tunnel through The Wall and are using it as the cave. The cave at Cushendall looks great as a cave entrance but wouldnt serve as a deep cave.

I was thinking the scene with Jon vs. Qhorin Halfhand as well, but based on the location and climate it is definitely the Storm’s End scene where creepy shadow baby comes out and wreaks havoc. I think that is still one of the most unrealistic scenes in the series, in an otherwise fairly realistic and gritty story; Martin has some ‘splainin to do on that count. The Blackwater scene with the chain makes a lot of sense too though.

But the spotlights are shining on an area beyond the hill, probably along the water, caves, etc. The angle of the photo is misleading. And the car headlights look like fire!

I too thought I heard the shadowbaby scene was already filmed. Maybe this is where they film Bran and Rickon hiding in the crypts at Winterfell? I can’t remember what the crypts looked like in season 1 off the top of my head, could they be in a cave with “accessories”?

Yes, a tower by the sea plus caves = storms end. Seems simple enough, but there remains the possibility of a ‘scripted’ scene that isn’t in the books.

American Gods, Dark Tower…is Malazan next? What HBO should get is the rights for Dune. That would be an amazing mini-series. I love the sci-fi channels attempts especially Children of Dune. But HBO would bring that book to life like no-one’s business.

    TJ Flynn,

Really? It was surreal that’s for sure. But absurd? Magic in ASOIAF seems to come from within, connected to life, to flesh, it resides deep inside us and the world. Basically blood magic. Sacrifice must be made in order to obtain it, it’s not something you just tap into like a tool in Harry Potter or other fantasy stories. Using it has consequences. Just like with the dragon eggs the birth of the shadow babies requires a biological construct.
Or that’s how I see it anyway.

I just think the novelty of it threw me off. You expect to see magic, reanimation, sacrifice, dragons, and even some immortality, but a shadow baby flying out of a vagina and biting someone’s neck just seemed more humorous to me than some serious deep residual black magic; in fact I think I distinctly remember laughing at that part in the book.

    Joshua Taylor,

I’m not sure about Malazan, what sets it apart from ASOIAF (or rather what sets ASOIAF apart from all other fantasy series) is that in Malazan magic and supernatural elements play a very large role whereas in ASOIAF it’s much more in the background and only occurs once in a while making it much easier to film. I mean how do you think they’d be able to show Moon’s Spawn or all the huge battles it’s involved in, in which magic plays a very large role. Or the Tiste Andii and Tlan Imass? Or Jaghut Tyrant? Just to name a few problems. I think if they’d make a series out of those books it’d be either very loosely adapted or be the most expensive series of all time and therefore cancelled after one season. Still it’s be amazing to see Malazan come to life even for only one season. In fact I once went as far as to compile a list of possible castmembers, though I didn’t get very far. I’m not a huge fantasy reader, most I just find too cheerful compared to crime fiction, but I loooove Malazan, even more than ASOIAF though in terms of quality I think GRRM’s books are better.

I don’t know anime very well, tried Bleach and Helsing but wasn’t really captivated by either, but you could be right. I just asumed Joshua Taylor was talking about a live action series like GoT and that brings with it a whole lot of problems but it could work as an adult animated series.
