I like how if you read the press release they actually list every actor that is a part of the ensemble cast. Game of Thrones‘ list is easily the longest list, with two to three times the cast members of other nominees like Dexter and Breaking Bad.

    Winter Is Coming,

LOL, I was JUST going to edit my post about that (just spend 5 minutes counting names)!! Having Irri first confused me for a second before I realized they had everyone! Both HBO series had huge cast, and GoT is still more than BE.

Jess, yeah, Empire is the only cast that comes close and Thrones still beats them by 6 cast members. I doubt the entire nominated cast will be at the awards ceremony, but if they do and if Thrones wins, will they all fit on stage?

    Congrats to cast and crew!

Just a quick question: Are there any rules as to when someone is considered part of the ensemble cast? Because I noticed people like Gethin Anthony, Finn Jones or John Bradley missing. Were they in too few episodes to be nominated?

Lisa, at first I thought it was only featured and regular cast that get nominated, but then I looked at the official cast list and I see that a few featured cast members did not get nominated while some guest cast members did. So I’m guessing that the nominees include all the regular cast plus any of the featured and guest cast members that belong to SAG.

    EDIT: Or what pooteeweet said.

The SAG rules says: “A Television Ensemble shall be defined as those actors who have appeared in more than half the episodes originally aired during the eligible calendar year.”

Congratulations to the entire GoT cast! I’m also happy for Dexter. The show has a cast that not just has strong acting, but also gender and ethnic diversity. It sets such a great example for American TV productions.

As to the Golden Globes, I’m hoping for a slim chance that Sean Bean would finally get some love from these major award shows!

Jess, that would be awesome and hilarious. If I had to guess at who will be there, I’d say Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage and Jason Momoa for sure (since they are all in the US) then probably Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington. Maybe Maisie and/or Sophie too, if their parents let them go. ;)

Basically the same as the SAGs; best drama, best actor/actress, etc. The key difference being the Globes have supporting actor categories. Which means another chance for Peter Dinklage to collect some hardware. :)

Also the Globes are voted on by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. and, as we know, Thrones is quite popular internationally. Much more so than some other competing dramas such as The Good Wife. This might give them a leg up in this award competition that they don’t have in the Emmys, SAGs, etc.

Winter Is Coming, I really hope the kids would be there! They were amazing and need to be properly recognized for their brillance! Of course, I’m also assuming B&B and Martin would be there.

Tar Kidho, I’m thinking GoT will get nominated for Best Drama series and Peter Dinklage will get a nod for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Golden Globe noms for the tv categories tend to be similar to emmy noms, so I have high hopes! It would be awesome to see a screenplay or directing nom.

Maxwell, yea, it’s weird that his name wasn’t listed. Not sure what’s going on there…

This is great news! Well deserved nom and hopefully the first of many accolades.

But there are three things that will prevent GOT from winning best ensemble, and their names are Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and Giancarlo Esposito. If GoT fans desperately need a fix before April, I strongly recommend checking out Breaking Bad. If Walter White ever moved from ABQ to Westeros, he would give Varys and Littlefinger cause for concern.

Off topic, but I just came up with a Clash of Kings casting theory: What if they got rid of Queen Selyse and had Stannis marry Melisandre? Through Feast for Crows, I haven’t seen Selyse or her daughter as being relevant to the plot, and marrying Mel would help explain the shadow babies. The queens men wouldn’t even be affected.

It’s so weird that a character like Irri (whom I don’t even remember) is included whilst Bradley and Lloyd who both had significant screen time aren’t. I guess they have to make the ensemble delineation somewhere but it sucks for them. Oh well, I’m sure Bradley will be included next year.

    SG,

Agreed regarding Cranston, Paul, and Esposito. This season wasn’t my favourite season of Breaking Bad (though I know I’m firmly in the minority on that angle) but the acting was out-the-roof awesome. As great as Cranston has been in the past (and he has his awesome moments this season as well, notably the cackling insanity at the end of “Crawlspace”), this was really Aaron Paul and Giancarlo Esposito’s year to shine. Jesse’s “Problem Dog” monologue was certainly Emmy-worthy and ditto with Gus’s silent, precise routine in “Box Cutter”.

For those three alone, I’m rooting for Breaking Bad to take it.

No kidding, these three really kicked major @ss this year. (But my favorite has been season 3!) The chess game between Gus and Walt (with Jesse as their prized pawn) this season was riveting. I really see a lot of parallels between Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones – both series are flush with morally ambiguous, highly driven characters, and both shows wring maximum excitement out of the political manuverings of the various players jockeying for power.

And both series are blessed to have super talented casts, and writing staffs as well. We sure are lucky fans to have such awesome show on the air!

Awesome! Other than an award for Casting (SNUBBED!), the award for performance by an Ensemble is what I think Game of Thrones most deserves.

But i looked at the list and I don’ see John Bradley/Sam listed!! And it’s not because he’s not major enough – Irri, Pyp, and Grenn are there… JOHN BRADLEY MUST BE RECOGNIZED HE IS AMAAAZING!

ETA: ah, I see pooteeweet’s comment that you have to be in 6 episodes. Viserys was obviously only in 5 and I guess same goes for Sam? Interesting…

I agree with the people who think GoT doesn’t stand much of a chance against the perfomances in BB this year.

I think because other shows have less characters, they get a lot more screentime to make the actor work with it and give a greater impression. The GoT-performances were great for the material the actors were given, but none of them come close to the spellbinding performances of Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Jonathan Banks, Giancarlo Esposito, Bob Odenkirk and Dean Norris.

I just checked imdb, he and John Bradley are in 5 episodes, short of only one to be included (they need to be in more than half), quite a shame in my opinion.

Breaking Bad is overrated! There, I said it… nah, just kidding. It’s one of the best drama series out there, but I do think that Season 4 wasn’t as good as previous seasons. My main gripe with the series is Gus earlier on always seems to know where Walt is, but when s*%t hits the fan and when he needed to keep an eye on Walt the most, he got sloppy (very unlike Gus) let Walt wander around and do his schemes, which ultimately got Gus killed. Still, I would be happy if either BB or GoT wins it.

I don’t know how Dexter got nominated when there are better series out there with better cast. After season 4, I found everyone except Dexter annoying on that show. I couldn’t give a crap about Batista and LaGuerta relationship.

I agree, the Dexter nomination was a head scratcher. Season 4 with John Lithgow was amazing, but since then everything has gone off the rails. The finger quotes “shocking twist” for this season was obvious from the earliest episodes, and the latest development with Deb’s epiphany about Dexter is a real groaner. I hate to say it, but Dexter seriously jumped the shark this season. I don’t know what can be done to salvage this one superb series, and I seriously hope we never experience the same quality slide with BB or GOT!

I’m really amazed by this. I am a fan of GoT, but to put it in the same category with BB just blows my mind.

GoT can only get better, because it can’t possibly get worse considering how much of a budget it has, and the marketing budget, and the most excellent actors, the production company, and the story it’s based on. If GoT gets worse it truly would be an epic failure… I don’t think it’s possible.

    Epic doodles,

I read the books and if HBO does a great job adapting it and doesn’t screw it up, especially the next two books, I would say GoT will be right up with Breaking Bad or even surpass it. As much as I adore BB, especially with the phenomenal acting of the cast, the story is simplistic in comparison, imo.

Sean Bean snubbed is right! This guy hits the nail on the head discussing all the shows/actors that were overlooked by SAG……

    http://tvgeekarmy.com/post/viewPost/7_sucky_sag_snubs/392f8a294caffb13dfd22c9ad25763b1

“Where’s Sean Bean? Bean’s portrayal of Eddard “Ned” Stark was the linchpin upon which the entire adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones book was cohesively crafted. It was from Ned’s world-weary eyes that audiences got an understanding of the vast lands and political machinations of Westeros. Without a sympathetic yet just character like Ned and Bean’s fine, understated performance, audiences could have easily been too confused or fractured to care. Plus [spoiler alert!], there are no more chances for the SAG voters to make this right in another season.”

I agree, though the 2nd season was my personal favorite – so much going on, and the best performance by the entire ensemble, in my opinion (plus, DOAKES!!). The 4th was good but rather uneven to me – all the scenes with JL were chilling and great, but all the other characters/plots were underused badly that season.

3rd and 5th were totally mediocre, though they kept me watching. Haven’t seen the 6th yet but I’ve heard it’s even worse…

Have to agree that season 3 was pretty terrible. Game of Thrones is simply leagues ahead if everything else on television. I have never seen the anticipation for a second season like this ever before. A counted 54 news articles the day that the ‘night is dark’ teaser was released. That says something guys. Actually I’ve got no problem with Dexter or Michael C. Hall, I just haven’t watched since mid-Season 1 (its on my long list of shows to catch up on), and I thought he was amazing in Six Feet Under. When I said “…nevermind” I was referring to the fact that I have no idea who Patrick J. Adams is, and I can’t recall ever having heard of the show “Suits.” So yeah, I think Sean got screwed.
