HBO aired the third teaser, and first with any footage, for season two of Game of Thrones tonight. The teaser is entitled “Cold Winds.” View it below or click the link to watch it via YouTube.
Winter Is Coming: Nicely done! Not as much footage as I was hoping for, but the trailer itself was very well-done. Atmospheric and chilling. Dillane’s voice-over was awesome. I think he’s going to make a great Stannis.

Another shot of Mel & Stannis! Wish it could’ve lasted a bit longer (or we could have gotten more of them). But Stannis sure sounds intimidating. I love the overall tone of this piece. And that flyover shot was beautiful.

I want more! “The night is dark and full of terrors” is a better tagline but “cold winds are rising” is pretty good, too. Certainly goes well with the mood of the second season (Dragonstone and Beyond the Wall).

I LOVE that final sweeping shot over the forest… CGI, or was that a helicopter shot?
Loved the three blasts of a horn at the end too.

Not a fan of the tagline. Stannis’ voice was good and I liked seeing all the main characters. Was that NED with the chain around his neck, or someone else? I would love to see voice over from a character we already know from Season 1 in the next promo. I’m sure a lot of people are wondering who was speaking? Or maybe thinking it was Renly since he said “My brother”?
I think the next promo needs to pack more umph – some action, a battle shot or war scene, something like that. This one was good for reintroducing characters but was a bit staid…
persephone88Quote Reply
I also wanted to add that I loved the way the horns were used in the background toward the end. This is a great teaser.
Persephone, that was Jaime we see with a chain around his neck.

Since this was basically a Stannis POV tease; I reckon we’ll also see Robb, Joffrey, Renly and possibly Balon teasers along a similar vein.

I like Dillane’s voice. Everyone looks as good as ever, though no one’s doing anything. Quick, everyone, look pensive! Hopefully they’ve got some better stuff in future days. Start weak, end strong.
And “The Cold Winds are Rising” is probably the worst tag-line yet. I’m not sure what they’re thinking, unless they intend on adding to it with each new preview.
I liked the deep horns at the end. Wildling?

Yeah, that last shot was awesome. I think it was a helicopter shot. And from Iceland from the looks of it. That quick though? Unless it was just “stock trailer footage”? First wow: Stannis sounds nothing like I imagined. Second wow: I don’t care. Dillane is going to be so awesome! I wouldn’t hesitate a second bending my knee to him. All hail to Stephen Dillane or be destroyed!
Third wow: This was short, I mean really short. We got like 5 shots of new footage. Eve the first teaser last year contained more footage. I wonder why they’re so desperate at HBO to show us so very very little.
Bottom line: great Stannis, horible teaser. Hope we’ll get to see something more extensive in the near future but definitely not holding my breath
Edit: actally I was wrong. This teaser contained 12 shots of footage. Last years first teaser only 9. But considering that last year by this time we allready had the clip preview which really was the first actuall trailer. This seems a let down

It’s hard to tell from a short teaser, but it really looks like they stepped up the cinematography from the few short shots we do see. For example, the shot of Renly from below his horse, the shot of the desert before seeing Dany and Jorah, or the flyover shot at the end… We never saw any shots like that in the first season, everything was very utilitarian and what I would call functional in terms of cinematography, much less cinematic.
Can’t say much else from the little we see. I do disagree with others who thought it was a bad teaser. To me it looked much more professional and polished than any of the teasers last year, except for MAYBE the strobe-lighty Throne teaser.

JoQuote Reply
I suppose they could also just end the second season with the three horns and continue from there on third season, but that would probably be too big of a cliffhanger…
VirtusQuote Reply
I didn’t like it.
It’s very very confusing. HBO can’t expect non-readers to remember that Robert had a brother they never saw on screen, and while the “voice” it obviously not Renly’s, it probably isn’t that obvious for someone who’s just watched the series just once, making it all even more confuse… that sinister person is the merry prince we saw flinching from blood and epilating in season one?
I don’t think it sends any message but confusion.
Also the “cold winds” line is SO corny.
hijaQuote Reply
When the initial excitement is gone, I have to concur with Honest Jerk‘s comment. We did not see anything new at all!
Surely I am glad that they upped the cinematography, but I kinda expected that from the last MGoT video when they showed night-time fight scenes. And comparing this trailer with last year’s Clip Preview… It falls waaaay shorter and bleaker.

I really, really don’t like that tagline. It’s unmusical, it’s not very gripping or memorable, it’s just…not very good. I MUCH preferred “the night is dark and full of terrors.”

SandSnakeQuote Reply
don’t like the new tagline. Feels out of place, at least with this new teaser.
CharlesQuote Reply
I thought it was awesome, though admittedly I am someone who prefers teasers to give-everything-away trailers. It’s very much in the style of last year’s Iron Throne teaser, but this time focusing on Stannis as the new entrant and main heavy. Dillane sounds very much up to that task. And “The Cold Winds are Rising” is a fine tagline, raising the urgency of last year’s “Winter is Coming.”
Maxwell JamesQuote Reply
That was great. The overall quality looked so much better than what we got last year. It looked like a real movie trailer instead of a tv show. The sound of the horn blast was quite chilling. Especially when it sounded for a third time!
Also, why hate the tagline? It’s just a cool line from Stannis, it’s not the official slogan.

the goatQuote Reply
I don’t know. I think viewers will remember both of the Baratheon brothers.
I think they did an especially good job of building up the momentum for Stannis. Uncovering the Lannister incest, for example, was a pretty major plot point for season 1, and Ned ultimately died for the guy (or, at least, the idea of Stannis) when you think about it. He rejected Renly’s proposal specifically because Stannis was older. And Littlefinger’s betrayal (which was a pretty major development) was seemingly rooted in Ned’s preference for Stannis (i.e. “So it will be Stannis and war, then?”). So, for a character who didn’t even appear in the first season, I think they did a pretty good job of getting his name out there. True, if viewers haven’t been following all of the casting news, they probably won’t recognize Dillane as Stannis when they first see him, but it isn’t too hard to figure out. For example, Ned made a pretty big deal about Stannis being the “true heir” in season 1, and in this teaser, Stannis says “I am the true heir” (paraphrasing), or something to that effect. Just put two and two together, and there you go.
As for Renly, he did have a relatively minor role, true, but it wasn’t a role viewers are likely to forget (the noisy fellatio scene with Ser Loras, in which he conspires to crown himself, comes to mind). Plus, the scene in which he offers to arrest Joffrey for Ned seemed like a pretty major turning point. In fact, some people might even make the case that it was Ned’s downfall. Certainly, his story was set up pretty well for season 2 when he fled the capital and left Ned for dead. I do believe that Tywin even makes mention that Renly has crowned himself king in one of the last episodes.
So in that sense, if viewers were paying attention, they should remember Stannis & Renly, given the fact that they both played a fairly major role (indirectly and directly, respectively) in Ned’s demise. And let’s face it, for fans who haven’t read the books, Ned’s demise was probably one of the more shocking things they’ve ever seen on TV.

hija,
You’re wrong. I watched the first season before reading any of the books, and so did all my friends. We discussed each episode by email in the week afterwords. We all understood relatively early in the season that Robert had another brother who was the legitimate heir to the throne.
Renly and the Flower Knight mentioned Stannis before the BJ. There was the scene where Ned handed the letter to his courier and told him to get it to Stannis. Varys mentioned Stannis to Ned in the dungeon. They made his existence plenty known.

I dug it, but I had to give my non-reader husband a ten minute recap before pressing play. “Okay, the guy speaking is Stannis, the last king had three brothers…” and thennn played it stop and start to point out the characters they showed and help him remember where they all were at from last season. It’s been a long time since Season One, so his memory is fuzzy. Basically, that’s a lot of work to give a non-reader the basic knowledge to enjoy what he was watching.
Oh, and Stannis sounds super scary similar to Jorah, so I think that’s an extra confusing complication for HBO viewers. Anyway, cool shots, love the horns. I actually do hope they fit in the prolouge of SOS, because otherwise viewers might think they’re on another “Lost” trail of unfulfilled mysteries.

Long time reader, first time poster- fan of both the tv series and the books.
I noticed that when Stannis’ rivals are shown, the cut from one to another has them swallowed up by shadows- it’s especially visible after Joffrey.
Any reader of the book is going to know what that means, and I thought it was a cool detail.
Also liked the idea that Stannis, a character so far unseen in the show, is coming out of nowhere and boldly making his claim in the ad. That’s a clever way of illustrating his presence in the story.

2. i totally agree with those who say non-readers will probably be confused by this teaser. I watched all of s1 in one weekend so you’d think I would remember the mentions of Stannis, but umm… no. I barely remembered renley’s name (just referred to him as “the gay one”), i didn’t even fully realize he was Robert’s brother. *faceplant* yea, sorry but it’s the truth. Very atmospheric and yes Dillane does sound as I imagined Stannis to sound – stern, moody, unflinching , but… it doesn’t grab me like the S1 trailers did. And I’m not getting “The cold wind’s are rising” tag line, it’s not no “Winter is coming” and I would have hoped they would have used a familiar line from the books – or even gone with “The night is dark and full of terrors”.

Once again, we wake up late over here…
THis was…. I don’t care if there could have been more shots, I loved it! So much atmosphere it was giving me the chills. I’m almost worried about Stannis’ voice being too charismatic at this point! Oh, and the three hornblows at the end of the teaser made the hairs stand on the back of my neck – which is good; that is the exact same thing that happened when I first read it in the books.
Lengthwise, yes, it was short, but once again, I expect some more fleshy stuff once HBO announces a full-fledged trailer.
Lise BollumQuote Reply
This was great for what it is: a teaser. Sure, it may not be of the calibur of what we had last year, but we’re judging it too much based on that. It’s just a teaser. If you’re waiting for new clips and more substantial content, wait until they release an actual trailer.
As for me, this will probably keep me happy for at least two weeks before I start craving more.

I totally agree with you! Even though I’m a bit more filled in from following this site, as a non-reader of the books I first thought it was Renly. I don’t believe that the viewers who only watched the tv show will know what this teaser was about or remember the character of Stannis. So many characters to follow and remember….very confusing. To think of all the new ones that I’m going to be meeting this season…..it’s a bit intimidating and scary. I worry about not going to be able to follow the story or to keep who’s who straight in my mind!
As far as the length of this….that’s what a teaser is! Short and teasing! Hang in there for the actual trailers!

Ok, this trailer won’t excite anybody but the true fans of the series, but needless to say I am now so excited I just can’t hide it!!! :)
I personally am happy that it wasn’t too spoilery (at least for those who have read the books). As for the publicity campaign, it looks clear now that all the throne contenders (plus some?) will get their own trailer!
Tar KidhoQuote Reply
Btw, I think there’s a good reason for D&D to make Stannis a bit more likable in the tv series than in the books, because otherwise nobody would care when he got slain, everybody would just see it as a less dramatic copy of Ned’s death. Which maybe it is…
Tar KidhoQuote Reply
I liked the atmosphere and cinematography on that one. And Stannis’ voice, of course. All has been said already, the curse of the Euro timezone :) hehe.
We are still definitely firmly in teaser territory, HBO is bringing the heavy guns (trailers, character shots, posters) only after New Year’s. And no official tagline yet, fret not :)

I agree with everyone else that book-readers are probably the only ones who will fully get this this trailer. But at least HBO knows its audience!
The most striking image of Book 2, when I was reading it, was the red comet. It symbolized the whole book, imho. Wonder if they will include it…

Pretty good teaser, it was short but it’s a teaser trailer in December when the show won’t debut until April. I really wasn’t expecting much more.

Some people have really unrealistic expectations on teasers. A teaser’s purpose is just to make you aware that something is coming, rather than explaining clearly what it is.

True. We’re really early in production so getting anything is a bonus. The next trailer will have the comet or something with VFX. Getting to hear Stannis was good for now.
And I love the new shot of Renly. You can see entirely why people would follow him – in fact, he looks exactly as I pictured young Robert. It was a bit weird to not have any shots of Robb if you consider that a lot of the reports from ‘insiders’ said he would have a much expanded role.

For me personally I loved the tease. The voice-over was a perfect introduction to Stannis, but I do wish they would have started with a shot of his face before they went into the voice over.
darquemodeQuote Reply
clemintine,
It’s pretty pointless discussing if it makes us excited or not since that’s a very personal experience. Whether it was realistic to expect a lot of footage etc is more direct.
But I for one definitely got excited hearing Stannis’ claim to the throne and hearing the three horn blasts made me relive the feeling of when I first read about that happening.
Tywin’s BastardQuote Reply
Tar Kidho,
I think many of the “unlikable” characters in the books will automatically become more likable and just more well-balanced due to the fact that we get to see more sides of them than the limited POVs in the books. So much of the books sets up limited adversarial perspectives and that all gets adjusted when we see the fully dynamic non-POV versions.
I cannot wait to see how Stannis comes to life.

Awesome trailer, and very clever to introduce Stannis in this way.
The first TV series never really set him up the way the first book did; by the end we knew he was a fair but harsh man with a reputation as a great battle commander but that everyone had doubts about what sort of king he’d be.
Now he has to show the audience he is a major contender for the throne from the first episode, while interacting with none of the cast or locations we’ve been introduced to thusfar (he could be on another world, rather then pants-wettingly close to K’s L)
Trailer tells us Stannis is here, shit is going down, and there will be tears before bedtime.
RuusterQuote Reply
Not crazy about the cold wings tagline, only because it’s so similar to Winter is Coming. To be honest, I don’t really care all that much about taglines in general because I already know how awesome the storyline for ACOK is. However, I could imagine non-readers thinking that this new tagline just beats the dead horse from the first season. Winter, the cold winds, etc. etc. And although the true evil in the story seems to be the winter and cold wind and the Others, I think the marketing could do with a bit more diversity.
When I think of ACOK, this is the line that always sticks in my mind. It’s from the jacket I think. “For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.” I think I’d rather see them use something like that, which would focus more on the War of the Five Kings. I think they just have such great imagery there and some type of set-up of that would be awesome.
Or of course dragons. Anything with dragons would be delightful. Though I don’t expect HBO to play that card until it’s actually time to reveal your hand. ;)
Okay, so despite the above analysis of the taglines and what I want to see, I was very very happy with and excited by the trailer! We got to see most of our favorite Season 1 characters, and a nice glimpse of Stannis, and the voiceover monologue was great! Now I’m just holding out for real shots of Melisandre, Ygritte and Jaqen!

I think that the 3 Horn blasts will be perfect to end the second season: they could further set up the meaning of the blasts, when Jon joins with Ygritte we will hear them talk about ambushing the NW, then cut to the Fist, we hear 1 blast everybody stirs, then a second one, some rangers scream “Wildlings!”, and then the third one, close up of Mormont looking afraid, fade to…credits. Concerning the idea that every king will get his trailer:I think it would be wise to keep Balons plans a secret, because the non-reader will hope that Theon will suceed in Robb’s mission to win allegiance from the Ironmen
EDIT: Oh and that shot of Selyse next to Stannis gives be fuel to keep my Reed/Reek flame burning;)

Didn’t you follow horsegate a few weeks back?
WinterdarkQuote Reply
Well, I never said they’d drop it. Just that the marketing could maybe do with some diversity. The reason I say this is that last season, I did have several people who watch the show but don’t read the books say sarcastic things to me like, “Hey, did winter ever come in those books?” “What happens when winter FINALLY comes?” and even (unrelated to argument) “Does a Lannister always pay his debts? HA HA HA.” And maybe I just have shitty, overly-critical, sarcastic friends. But we did get a lot of reiterations of a few key lines.
I liked the trailer and I’m sure more diverse stuff is forthcoming. And I’m not acting like it’s the end of the world. I don’t think anyone here is. Quit being dramatic. We’ve had very little Season 2 material to discuss, so naturally, when an ACTUAL TRAILER debuts, we’re going to talk about it as much as we possibly can. And if that means throwing around ideas about taglines and analyzing stuff and disagreeing, then so be it, because for me, that’s better than no Thrones discussion.

I dare say HBO should also give the people responsible for this shining diamond of a video with a holiday bonus, company car, and an all-expense paid for trip to Tahiti for the months of January and February, and a Mac Air with built-in internet. And also, extra money and a box of happiness, and a second Chalet style home outside Belfast with a decent heating and sewer system, and a pony.

LangkardQuote Reply
I might guess that he won’t be THE focus. The second book is named The Clash of Kings afterall, and Stannis is one of those we didn’t hear from personally in season one to know where he stands and what he plans. His part in the book is a fairly sizeable chunk of the new story branches that isn’t already ongoing in the show. I’ll assume there will be a teaser with some Iron Islands stuff eventually.
ClobQuote Reply
I think it’s a great teaser, because it introduces Stannis close to how he is introduced in the books. Readers tend to forget that we did’t know very much about Stannis before ACOK either. There was talk about him, but nothing more. Then the prologue showed him as the Baratheon without any of the Baratheons charisma.
That reminds me how James Hibberd described Viserys: he didn’t understand respect and love has to be deserved not given. Stannis is the same in many ways (not inculing evil) and that is the greatness of this conflicted man.

Book 2 is Tyrion, but he isn’t one of the 5 kings. Going to be a lot of new confusing characters and no center, could be a problem for non-readers. Never heard the horns on Tv or my IPod Touch. Also found many shots too dark & murky – can’t see the people.
Watched HBO from 8:30 on, they also had a couple second for show id. It was Jamie drawing a sword & whirling around, had Cersei reacting (think the whole thing was in black & white). Could really hear the sword being drawn.

Uh, in my original post I praise the audio part of the teaser. Yes, the three horn blasts are great and Stannis’s voice-over is supine (I guess he’ll be the Old Nan of season 2). Just because I am a fan doesn’t mean that I’m going to love and praise everything they do. My issue is with the visual. It’s too disjoint. Epic horn blasts and bell knells don’t make a teaser. It has to *all* come together.
clemintineQuote Reply
I found the teaser correct. Perhaps a little underwhelming, for it hardly show us some of the new characters. In fact, I’d say you can show it to a non-book reader and tell him it was S1 footage and he might well believe it.
The good:
the voiceover of Stannis. Great.
The large shots of scenery and landscape. Perhaps this time we’ll some more on that and get a better scale of the story. Besides, they’re beautiful, atmospheric and give a touch of serious cinematography.
The bad:
As I said, it’s mostly made by close-ups of known characters. No context, no action, no dialogue. Even no new characters, but Stannis himself.
I think we’re, as always, overanalyzing this a little bit. Do the tagline matters so much? Really? FWIW, to my non-native ear it sound as corny as “the night is dark and full of terrors”…

I read the books after watching season one and had no trouble about any character. I knew who whas Stannis after season one, and waited a lot for him. I think it’s not HBO role to simplify such a big story so it’s possible to understand and remember everything after 10x40minutes only. If people dont know who is Stannis, it’s only because they were not “seriously” watching the show. It’s the same as watching a movie in a theater or watching it on TV, cut by 73 commercials and phone calls.
CamuskaQuote Reply
Really? You pictured a short, short-haired girly man? In the books he was tall with long jet-black hair and beyond charismatic. Our TV Renly is anything but. He is weak (afraid of the sight of blood?) and was goaded into this by his boyfriend.
JakeQuote Reply
Definitely agree that we are over-analyzing quite a bit(that’s what we do best!). Really, all this teaser is is a montage of familiar characters and an introduction to one of the main story-arcs. It’s not asking viewers to follow anything or even know who is speaking, it’s just reminding viewers that the show is coming up and planting a couple seeds.
I think us super fans get so wrapped up in things that we tend to overstate and overestimate the effects these teasers have on casual viewers.
The one thing that I took from it is that they are bringing a more cinematic and atmospheric look to it than anything we saw last year, which has me very excited because that was something that the first season really lacked, IMO.

It would be pretty funny if they used a different phrasing of “Winter is Coming” for each season. Readers are well aware that after 5 lengthy books, winter has only just now “sort of came, depending on where you are located.”

Even though the tagline isn’t even tagline, all this discussion just shows that it was wrong move. No amount of defending can fix that. I think that only saving point could be that they are really going to make all the kings their own teasers and we will get Robb-not-tagline-tagline and teaser and Renly and maybe Balon. Or maybe not even kings. Just main champs. Though unfortunately I highly doubt it. I think the mistake was that they typed the words into video before the Game of Thrones words and that gave the taglinish feeling to it.
And please. I’m not whining or blaming or throwing a fir or anything. I’m here to discuss. This thread and site would suck huge monkeyballs if all the threads would be 300 messages of “I think Renly is so cute he has pink panties.” … oh well maybe not the site. This would still be awesome site.

Absolutely loved it. I think the the tagline is quite appropriate amongst the horn blows (chill down my spine). Crossing my fingers for a teaser centered around every king, I think you could make one about Balon without it being too spoilery. One of my concerns with this season was Renly, but I like his new look. He definitely looks majestic, though I wonder how he is going to portray that happy-go-lucky attitude.

I wonder if Frodo is gonna sail on the Dawn Treader in this one and team up with Kvothe to figure out the name of the wind to save the galaxy from the Sith Lords.

STANNIS.
Dillane’s voice is brilliant, and the accent a pleasant surprise. Brought more to the character than I’d read into the books. He does a great job of sounding exactly like Mark Addy’s brother, in accent and in timbre – and in giving a very ‘no-nonsense’, ‘down-to-earth’, atmosphere.
As I said when he was cast, I was blown away by his performance in John Adams, which I thought was truly incredible, and although he doesn’t match my preconceptions about the character, I’m sure he’ll be brilliant in the role. [He doesn't even look like Jefferson in this clip].

I loooooovvvveeedd it!!!! Stannis sounds like Jorah without the kindness, and Robert without the mirth. For me, the subtle character tragedy of Stannis was summed up in the line ‘Everything Stannis had done, Robert had done first.’

Meryn Trant is such a smug a-hole. He’s going to be fun to hate.

This was a nice tease, but it sort of looks like the opening sequence of a soap opera lol. Mute it and you can play ‘The Young and the Restless” theme over it. Stannis saves it with the voice-over. Not to mention the three horn blasts! WILDLINGS!!!

Maybe Hodor is the rightful king. I mean there would have to side effects to 300 years of incest, all hail Hodor Targaryen!
‘There are no men like me,’ said Jaime Lannister, ‘Only Hodor.’
‘Hodor.’ Said Hodor.
‘I used to be a man like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee.’ Said Littlefinger, with a buzzing baritone of melancholy in his voice.

You know what we need? A comment and analysis from our friend, co-author, and sidekick We Do Not Sow, a.k.a. WDNS, a.k.a. Wednesday. Seriously, he is in a good position as a non-reader who followed the first season closely to give his opinion and speculate on the content of S2. If you all promise not to spoil anything for him!

Alva Jones,
Every piece of serialized drama is a soap opera by many people’s standards. If you have angst and crazy turns of events and human relationships you are automatically considered a soap opera. A soap opera by definition is a low budget television serial filmed FIVE DAYS A WEEK. The script is also written on this consistency. Game of Thrones is not a soap opera. I’ve spent hours defending Mad Men on this matter and I don’t want to start defending GoT.

I don’t get how you came to that conclusion. Soap opera’s using helicopter shots? Timelapses, cinematic shots of nature? I don’t know if day-soaps have changed but the last time I saw an intro from one I only got to see a bunch of faces (and they didn’t get burned away like in this teaser) looking like they have take a huge dump on a cheesy tune.

So I believe the consensus here is if you have nothing yet to show for a teaser don’t make one at all. I agree as a teaser it was weak. As much as revelled in the sound and visuals, especially Dillane as Stannis and the horns blasting it was no where as good as the previous video. I’m assuming now that filming is finished in its entirety we will see a cornucopia of new footage in the subsequent teasers.
Bottom line: I didn’t hate it and I didn’t love it. But I am also not disappointed. Maybe HBO didn’t want to show too much of what they had because it would detract from the Boardwalk Empire finale.

There are going to be different taglines for the trailers like last year, there’s no reason to complain about it. There’s two so far.

HBO was very clear when they ordered the GoT teaser to be “good, but not too good”. Still, they had to reject the first two versions because they were “amazing” and “somewhat exciting”, respectively. Only by the third cut did HBO agree to air it. “This teaser’s not the worst I’ve ever seen. It’ll do,” a pleased HBO Director of Marketing Lou Costello was reported to say around HBO’s NY office. “It wasn’t great,” Mr Abbott, Senior Viceroy of Nighty-nite Programming wrote in an email to this reporter. “And that’s just what we were looking for.”
