MGoT: Lesson Two: Looking Good vs. Staying Alive

The latest Making Game of Thrones post is up, thanks to Cat Taylor!

Fashion is not Dior verses Chanel. It’s North Face verses Jack Wolfskin. It’s wet weather gear verses gaiters. It’s wellingtons verses hiking boots. It’s merino wool verses hi-tech fabrics and very occasionally, it’s brushing your hair before you leave your house.

Fire And Blood: Our northmen are lookin’ good. Extra points for the little splash of color; I like a bold man in a pink parasol.

Hear Me Roar: These brave men are apparently the Harrenhal guard, in Harrenhal.

What’s there to be confused about? It’s big hairy guys in tough Northman gear standing there with brollies so they don’t get wet.

    It’s cute.

This made me remember the Nâzgul from LOTR with blue umbrellas when it was raining during filming :D
This type of contrast is always funny :)

Ahem… we’re Harrenhal Guard actually ;-) , standing in the centre of Harrenhal trying to listen/glimpse some scenes on monitors whilst sticking close enough to getting called in if needed (we weren’t)… Everyone did have a good chuckle at the state of us to be fair! I personally think the pink really brings out the green brolly’s true colour!

Hey, WIC, you should do a weekly photo caption contest starting with this photo! (Prize would be bragging rights, naturally!)

    I’ll start things off.

“Mythbusters : Westeros – Brightly colored umbrellas confuse raven-messengers and send them diving their death!”

(I know, a little lame, but what do you want from me? I’m trying to start something here!)

    Great pic!

I am indeed, I stand before you as the bearer of the pink umbrella… of House Umber-ella might be more apt now.

Whilst I would’ve preferred a more serious and in-character shot of me to show my wife & kids, all told it’s a great pic and a nice reminder of how good it can be on set – whilst you might be standing around in the rain for long hours, there is plenty of laughs & banter going on throughout.

I have to say I’m pretty pleased that my much vaunted umbrella holding skills have been recognized by HBO!

And now that song is stuck in my head!

You look like a very convincing guard even with the pink :) Was the costume comfortable to wear?

    Cheers Shiny,

I look a little more paunch then my more svelt companions in the pic (thanks bulging leather tabard!), but guard-like enough I thought.

Costumes were comfortable, yes, and warm too. All cloth mixtures basically, with the leather tabard, spaulders and sword the only weight & movement restrictive pieces involved and that wasn’t much.
The knee length quilted tunic under the tabard is actually a re-used costume from the Umber Bannermen of S1 which I also got a part as (hence my web name), so it was cool to see how they were re-using elements from last year in this years costumes/armour.

OT: I know that season 3 isn’t official yet, but I think it’s almost a given thing. Here is a statement from Charles Dance to underline that:

Can you say anything about what’s coming up in Game Of Thrones?

We finished [filming] season two. I think that will air in February or March of next year, and we will start shooting season three in May or June of next year.

There are spoilers in the rest of the interview, be aware of that!

    Abyss,

Hey thanks for that, I allways wondered if Dance actually liked films like Underworld. Guess not. Personally I think it’s a bit of a waste of his enormous talent but then again the first film I saw with him in it was Last Action Hero so who am I to judge. Also his role in Going Postal is much more than a cameo. Don’t know why the interviewer thought so. He has like 5 scenes in that film, all relatively long with lots of dialogue on his part.

    Abyss,

    Nice link, thanks!

About this spoilery line: “Devotees of the books have told me that I have a very spectacular death, not next season but possibly the season afterwards. I’m not going to tell you what that is, but it’s a death scene the like of which I’ve never had before anyway.” Edit: Few have had the privilege of dying like Vincent Vegas.

Kinda Got-esque, was it? I loved it. Way to go Gillian! :D
Although I’m freaking out. I got this huge spoiler which is coming true an episode at the time, and it end’s with *****Jimmy’s**** death. I hope it’s not true, that person is my favorite character

Ah, Harrow is far and away my favorite character. He’s kind of like how the Hound should be in Game of Thrones. Nothing against Rory McCann but D&D should take a page from BE book regarding “scared” characters.

    House Umber,

Thanks for filling us in on the details. That is very interesting. I’m relatively very jealous! I guess you are/were an extra for season 1 this season 2 of GoT–is that right? Belfast must be an interesting place these days, with all the new people and work coming in and the expansion of the Paint Hall.
