I remember people saying how reticent they were about the young actors in the Harry Potter films, but later saying they simply couldn’t see anyone else but Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in those roles. I am seeing massive similarities here. After reading the books, and watching the show (more than once-Thank you HBO), I simply cannot imagine anyone else playing Arya but Maisie Williams.

I’ve always loved Maisie (Arya is my favourite character, after all), and I love the new look!
However, the two recent vids I’ve seen of Maisie (one from TitanCon, I think?) confirm my concerns that the kids are already aging really quickly. Maisie’s voice, confidence, and demeanor all make her seem quite a bit older than Season 1 (more like the 14-year-old she really is). Even compared to Maisie’s Artisans video from last year, she looks and sounds a LOT more mature. I wish we could go back in time, to the 12-year-old Maisie from the pilot episode.
It’s not the end of the world, but I think something of Arya’s childish innocence is lost, and this will only become more noticeable with each season. In Book 5 she’s still only 11 (I think?) but at this rate, she could be closer to 18 when they film that stuff.

But with Arya at least, and the potential for how far D&D want to take the character, I am glad the actor is a little more mature since the character requires a knowledge of the world little children don’t (shouldn’t) know. And it’s more believable with an older actor (to me at least).

Yes, I’m aware that they’ve all been aged up for the show… but I think the aging up really takes away something special from the child characters. Same goes for Jon and Robb who now seem like young adults instead of boys struggling with the new responsibilities that have been shoved onto their shoulders (e.g. a friend of mine who hasn’t read the books said he found Robb completely uninteresting in the show, until I told him that Robb’s only 14 in the books which changed everything).
Arya as a young child in a dangerous world is much more interesting and endearing to me than Arya the teenager. BUT, Maisie is awesome so it’s not a huge deal. I’m just saying.

I see your point, but for practical reasons going with older characters made more sense. It would be harder to find good teenaged actors for Robb and Jon as opposed to young twenty somethings. And for me at least, I never pictured Robb or Jon as being 14-16 when reading the books; it just felt off with all they were going through.
Plus, all the child actors have been fantastic for the most part.

Anyways, I love how the MGoT site seems to enjoy giving Maisie a fair amount of recognition. Last year she had the artisans vid, and I think there was also a separate post talking about her sword training. I live about 300 miles from the town of Deadwood and there were times I had a hard time understanding what they were talking about. It wasn’t the accents though, rather the vocabulary that the characters employed on the show.

It’s really hard to get this stuff out of my hair, because the shampoo doesn’t really take it out, it’s too soft. So you need something really heavy-duty to get it out, and it always takes like 5 washes.”

I think it’ll be ok that she is a bit older & looks it than she does in the books…. if you’re living rough in the woods, hunted by Goats, Flayers & Mountains you’re gonna grow up quick & lose any child-like innocence.
Even Sansa towards the end of season 1 looked so different, her gaunt/haunted face when Joff made her go to see the heads was brilliantly realistic.

I hope Making Game of Thrones keeps these videos coming. I would love to see the other Stark kids—Isaac and Sophie were just as amazing as Maisie, so I would love to see an update from them on their characters, as well as Michelle Fairley, Kit Harrington, and Richard Madden, who were all fantastic in season 1.

So what if she’s 18 in book 5. Her age isn’t really that relevant.
Bran as well – yes, he won’t be carried by Hodor (or will he?), but he’ll still be a teenager, taken from his life, and basically retaining all his innocence.
I’d rather see a 16-year-old Bran/18-year-old Arya than other actors. That would be so lame.

Hey now. Some people actually have jobs to go to during the day. I would love to stay in at home and finish an ASOIAF book in one reading, but that’s just not possible. Sometimes I have to stop once I finish a suspenseful chapter, and I just HAVE to skim ahead to see whether characters are dead or alive. Just to be able to move on with real life. LOL.
Sometimes I regret reading ahead and knowing more than I should have. But the good thing is, when there is a really awful twist, the impact is not as bad once I read it in full context. The thrill comes from finding out how it the story ended up that way. To say that GRRM is unpredictable is an understatement.

When I first read ASOIAF, I had all the books (well, the first four) on my laptop. I kinda spoiled everything, except Ned’s death (although i DID skip the next chapters to find out whether he was dead or alive). I also spoiled those things in the WORST way possible, looking at Feast’s characters appendix, because I couldn’t find a ***Jon*** chapter using the search function.
And I also got two different spoilers about Dance’s ending (****Jon’s death**** ), so I was sure a character I dislik was going to die, so the ones I like were safe. Of course, the spoiler was fake, and we all know what happened. Great

I looked at the back pages where it shows you the Houses & the Outlaws etc… when I couldn’t find my <3 character on there I was distraught. Other people have said that at certain points in the books they got so angry at GRRM they actually threw them across the room cos he was killing off their fave people.

In a Storm of Swords (or was it A Clash of Kings) when Theon killed “Bran” and “Rickon” I flipped through the remaining chapters, which I do whenever I am reading a large book to see how much more there is to read, lol, and I saw the Bran chapter at the end so that was a spoiler that he was still alive… It would’ve been cool to learn that after going through the rest of the book distraught Bran and Rickon werekilled.
Also, I checked the POV characters for each book, which is minor spoilery since you know who survives the rest of the books, which isn’t that big a deal for me, but annoying for others.
Probably my biggest spoiler was reading ADWD and reading of Jon’s murder; it totally influenced the way I perceived the final chapter and I really did think he was dead; luckily I went on the forums at Westeros and now I am thinking he’s Azar Ahai Reborn or Ghost :P

Well, it’s interesting to find about everybody else’s reading styles. I won’t feel so bad the next time I give in to temptation :) For the most part, I do try not to read ahead. During the ACOK phase, I really thought Bran and Rickon were dead! I was in a daze until the twist was revealed. But then Maester Luwin and Ser Rodrik died. It was a tradeoff, I guess :/ Since the ASOS phase is taking so long, I might eventually end up joining the spoiler bandwagon…

When I was reading ASOS for the first time, I was mulling over Arya’s age and thought that looking at the index in AFFC (because I hadn’t yet read it, but it was purchased) was a fan-freaking-tastic idea. When I couldn’t find the Stark section until the end, and then saw “Robb Stark, slain at the Red Wedding” I was pissed.
It was still shocking for me when it happened, but not so much. I’m sad I ruined that moment for such a simple and innocent pursuit. :(

I find it really strange that some people struggle to understand what she’s saying. I’m not even an English speaker (Norwegian), but I have absolutely no problems understanding what she says. In general there are very few English accents I have problems with. Some American accents (mainly southern), and some British ones like scouse.
Maybe that’s because I’m Norwegian, though. I haven’t grown up with one distinct English, I’ve gotten loads of different ones (tv, school, internet, music, etc).
Oh, and she seems really mature. I know girls mature quicker than boys, but if I compare that to how I was at her age.. I don’t compare favourably :x

In the book they are quite frequent, but you never know with the show…. I’m hoping for a lot of Davos as I do love his character, defo one of my faves for the series & I do like Stannis & all his teeth grinding… But I could live without Mel quite easily.

And as for Maisie… you go, girl! Her new haircut is awesome, much better than that awful wig. Short hair rocks. I shaved my head when I was Maisie’s age, and I’ve never looked back! Though you do have to put up with people thinking you have cancer, are a lesbian and/or are a skinhead, which is an amusing combination.

Don’t worry, I’m American and I can’t understand Southern accents, either. But there are also some English accents I have problems understanding. Watching early Alfred Hitchcock films, the combination of poor audio and thick accents sometimes makes me wonder if the characters are even speaking English. xD

oh noes!!!! is it just me or is Maisie developing (or perhaps already has) large breasts? I ask this not out of prurience but out of concern for believability….. if she’s walking around totally stacked it becomes hard to suspend disbelief and think the male characters don’t notice she’s a girl… :-(

Lol, first time ever I hear a guy complain about a girl growing large breasts. Not only is it really unappropriate to talk about it online (just imagine her reading this), but there are a lot of easy tricks to hide them.
