MGoT: Stick ‘em with the pointy end!

A new video has been posted over at Making Game of Thrones and as you may have guessed from our post title, it’s all about sword fighting!

YouTube link

Winter Is Coming: Ok, that was awesome. I’m pretty sure that was a shot of Brienne right there. She is tall! And how cool is Rory McCann? But one thing I noticed that was missing… no Buster Reeves this season? That’s too bad.

There were definitely several shots of Brienne! And the Hound. The rest of it, to me, seems to be from the riot/mob scene.

Here’s the trick to make the videos work. First, quickly go to HBO.com, and choose “USA”. Then go back to MGoT (or here) and the video should suddenly be working. I discovered this last year.

I’m maybe in the minority but i wasn’t happy with Buster’s work, except for the Ned Vs Jaime fight that was great, the rest were not all that impressive, especially the Ser Vardis Vs Bron fight that was really weak.

And the war-hammer shot is awesome!

    Olisgood,

Interesting, but I disagree. I didn’t think the Ned/Jaime fight was anything special… found it a bit disappointing, really… but I loved Buster’s other work on the Bronn/Vardis fight, the Syrio/Arya training, the Dothraki/Jorah fight, etc.

That’s true, it seemed less flashy than other fights (a bit slow, even) but I guess that’s more realistic. And the intensity on Ned’s face was awesome.

The Jaime/Ned fight was a little underwhelming. It would have been better if they shot it as in the book. But the Jorah/Maggo and the Bronn/Vardis fights were aces in my book. I particularly love the Bronn/Vardis melee. It had a gritty verisimilitude about it.

But it basically didn’t happen in the book. Ned never draws his sword except to behead the Nights Watchman. Giving Ned a one on one was a nice gift for fans and good for establishing him as someone who wasn’t just a Lord giving commands from his comfy seat, it showed he could mix it in the dirt if he had to. We knew that from the books from all the flashbacks to Rob’s Rebellion but they avoided using flashback in the TV show so they had to establish that part of Ned’s character some other way. My only complaint is that the fight could have been a bit longer but I’m glad it wasn’t a stupid Errol Flynn-style fight with Jaime and Ned jumping off walls and so on.

These videos are so much fun to watch, and I’m glad they are trickling in one by one this year as well. Interesting about different fight-coordinators though. It will be interesting to see if the result will differ remarkably for good, bad or simply the sake of change.

Really heartened to see the Hound getting screen time – I hope he comes more to the forefront this season! From the brief shot, Brienne looked great!

I loved Buster’s work with the Dothraki – that scene with Drogo and Mago was terrific with Jason Momoa whipping past Mago’s arahk. I wish the Ned Jaime scene had been closer to the books – but honestly, I don’t watch this show for the fighting as much as the characterizations and political plots.

I suspect that was gwendoline christie’s stunt double and not the much anticipated shot’s of Brienne herself. Seeing as there was talk of stunt doubles in the clip at almost the exact same time Brienne is supposedly shown, it’s seems plausible.
Also the brief glimpse of the jawline seems quite mannish, is it possible that there aren’t that many 6’3″ ‘female’ stunt doubles available and they’ve had to use a man?

    Anyhoo, it’s just a theory.

    We’re not sure, no.

I’m about 95% sure it’s not a man, though – the “facial hair” is only dirt. And though it’s hard as hell to make out, I think her ear look like Gwendolines. Hope it’s her – she looks really strong.

In book #2, I became most intrigued by Sandor’s character and I think Rory is perfect in that role.

Ah yes, I see. You’re right, it would have been preferable.

The hound with a mace is a bit odd for me. I wouldn’t like to be one of those fans that obsess over tiny details but I did like that Robert was famed for his use of a hammer in battle. It added a nice touch to his character as you knew the strength he would need to be successful with it, plus it spoke about how he preferred to bludgeon foes rather tan kill them slightly more cleanly with a sword.

    Jordan Healey,

I watched Ironclad a few days ago. Wow, there’s all you can eat medieval fightin’ with shaking camera and all. I didn’t get to the end, but I would have if I had more time. Oh speaking of Syrio, isn’t that him in the background crowd in 1:23 grinning fiercely and waving a stick around? Just so, I believe..
