A new video has been posted over at Making Game of Thrones and as you may have guessed from our post title, it’s all about sword fighting!
Winter Is Coming: Ok, that was awesome. I’m pretty sure that was a shot of Brienne right there. She is tall! And how cool is Rory McCann? But one thing I noticed that was missing… no Buster Reeves this season? That’s too bad.

There were definitely several shots of Brienne! And the Hound. The rest of it, to me, seems to be from the riot/mob scene.

Don’t know why but NONE of the videos from that blog work on my PC (no matter the browser). Pardon me while I grump and sulk.
RadagastQuote Reply
Here’s the trick to make the videos work. First, quickly go to HBO.com, and choose “USA”. Then go back to MGoT (or here) and the video should suddenly be working. I discovered this last year.
LexQuote Reply
I have the same problem, but usually someone puts them up on youtube fairly quickly, so no worries. (:
Steve Hugh WestenraQuote Reply
That is so awesome (and also explains why sometimes the videos will randomly work for me). Thank you, Ser Lex.
Steve Hugh WestenraQuote Reply
Glad it worked for you! I live in Canada, and have the same problem. Those videos never appear, unless I go to HBO.com and choose the USA option first.

I’m maybe in the minority but i wasn’t happy with Buster’s work, except for the Ned Vs Jaime fight that was great, the rest were not all that impressive, especially the Ser Vardis Vs Bron fight that was really weak.
And the war-hammer shot is awesome!
OlisgoodQuote Reply
Olisgood,
Interesting, but I disagree. I didn’t think the Ned/Jaime fight was anything special… found it a bit disappointing, really… but I loved Buster’s other work on the Bronn/Vardis fight, the Syrio/Arya training, the Dothraki/Jorah fight, etc.
LexQuote Reply
Whoa, that sword was DRIPPING with blood! (OK, syrup, whatever…)
AziraphaleQuote Reply
Lex,
It’s not that I think it was special, it just seemed real to me, a sort of realism that the other fights lack IMO.
OlisgoodQuote Reply
Olisgood,
That’s true, it seemed less flashy than other fights (a bit slow, even) but I guess that’s more realistic. And the intensity on Ned’s face was awesome.
LexQuote Reply
I think there was actually quite a bit of Harrentown in there. Neat!

Goddamn Flash, everytime I update it something goes wrong and now I can’t see HBO-videos anymore!

Wow, I didn’t realise that was Brienne, she really is huge!

My memory may be fuzzy… what scene is at 1:10 where the Hound is fighting? I believe you can see the guy he’s fighting at 0.58 as well.
I can’t guess what scene this is depicting, but I haven’t read Clash in a while, so that maybe why.

Please please please – can somebody link? Cannot see and hbo.com does not work for me. Help!

Now that was cool. Seemed like a lot of the Joffery inspired riot scene was in that clip.
dizzy_34Quote Reply
Ser Jorah’s fight was my personal favorite last year. Short and sweet with a side order of grit. In fact, Jorah was my favorite part of season one in general.

Thank you, Winter for being so on top of all the forthcoming clips! They are all precious – any news of GoT helps the wait til April.

Great video, seems like they’re releasing these a lot earlier than they did for season one. Is the Hound wielding a mace in one of the shots?
Hopefully they’ll be a new teaser trailer with actual season 2 footage this Sunday to go with the Boardwalk Empire season 2 finale/sneak peak pilot of Luck.

Where was Brienne? I thought I saw her, but I’m not sure.
YeremiahQuote Reply
Just saw it at HBO.COM. Great stuff.
If that is Gwendoline Christie and not her stunt double then all I have to say is……wow.
Talk about method acting! If we’re lucky Brienne will be the next Calamity Jane of TV, only awesomer.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
She’s the short-haired blonde, doing the fight scene. Visible from behind at 0:17 and 0:30.
LexQuote Reply
None of the fight scenes were very exciting, either visually or in pacing. I think they did the right thing bringing in a fresh face.

How cool is that sword dripping blood!
John-Michael LelievreQuote Reply
Yeah, from the red cloak, I’m guessing someone from House Lannister (maybe one of the guard), but that will be a cool scene.
Wow – I didn’t realize the blonde was Brienne! For all those who doubted if they could downplay the actress’s looks, I think they’ll be satisfied! I thought it was a guy (from the back view).

He beat people from The Big Bang Theory and Glee, I’d say that’s pretty good :)

The Jaime/Ned fight was a little underwhelming. It would have been better if they shot it as in the book. But the Jorah/Maggo and the Bronn/Vardis fights were aces in my book. I particularly love the Bronn/Vardis melee. It had a gritty verisimilitude about it.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
I made a few screen-shots, just for the fun of it. – Am I mistaken or is Gwendoline Christie’s hair even more blond than normal? – Just to be clear, I don’t care if that’s the case, I am just curious. – Who am I kidding! – Hair-gate!… – again!
;-)
AbyssQuote Reply
But it basically didn’t happen in the book. Ned never draws his sword except to behead the Nights Watchman. Giving Ned a one on one was a nice gift for fans and good for establishing him as someone who wasn’t just a Lord giving commands from his comfy seat, it showed he could mix it in the dirt if he had to. We knew that from the books from all the flashbacks to Rob’s Rebellion but they avoided using flashback in the TV show so they had to establish that part of Ned’s character some other way. My only complaint is that the fight could have been a bit longer but I’m glad it wasn’t a stupid Errol Flynn-style fight with Jaime and Ned jumping off walls and so on.

Who other than King Robert ever used a warhammer?

My first thought at the sight of Brienne: Whoa… That guy is TALL! Wait a second… That isn’t a guy at all.
I really hope we’ll get a proper front-view of her some time soon!
These videos are so much fun to watch, and I’m glad they are trickling in one by one this year as well. Interesting about different fight-coordinators though. It will be interesting to see if the result will differ remarkably for good, bad or simply the sake of change.

It’s cute how they’re trying to hide her … her-ness?

Buster was recently spotted on the set of the Dark Knight, so that must have made him unavailable. Loved the two thumbs up Hound an Brienne!
Ser Lemon CakesQuote Reply
Really heartened to see the Hound getting screen time – I hope he comes more to the forefront this season! From the brief shot, Brienne looked great!
I loved Buster’s work with the Dothraki – that scene with Drogo and Mago was terrific with Jason Momoa whipping past Mago’s arahk. I wish the Ned Jaime scene had been closer to the books – but honestly, I don’t watch this show for the fighting as much as the characterizations and political plots.
persephone88Quote Reply
I suspect that was gwendoline christie’s stunt double and not the much anticipated shot’s of Brienne herself. Seeing as there was talk of stunt doubles in the clip at almost the exact same time Brienne is supposedly shown, it’s seems plausible.
Also the brief glimpse of the jawline seems quite mannish, is it possible that there aren’t that many 6’3″ ‘female’ stunt doubles available and they’ve had to use a man?
Anyhoo, it’s just a theory.
WARZQuote Reply
HouseLark,
I was more referring to the atmosphere: night and rain and all that. I had no problem with the rest of it. it just seemed very odd in the harsh light of day. I guess the idea was to show how brazen Jaime is.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
So what do we think those nighttime fights with the Lannister soldiers were? Gregor and his crew? Or maybe Amory Lorch?
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Winter Is Coming,
They show at least one shot early on of Yoren being confronted by Lannister soldiers. I saw some torches in that night-time fight – perhaps Night’s Watch vs Lorch was moved outside a holdfast to a road confrontation?
OhDanyBoyQuote Reply
I thought the blonde was a male stunt double. I could’ve sworn I saw facial hair in one shot. Are we sure that’s Brienne??
DreamlifeQuote Reply
I think the shots of the Hound fighting are during Blackwater!
Austin CleganeQuote Reply
Austin Clegane,
Yeah I thought that too. However, in the background you can see a few soldiers just standing there holding their helments. So I don’t really know what that scene is, but it looks awesome.
SamQuote Reply
We’re not sure, no.
I’m about 95% sure it’s not a man, though – the “facial hair” is only dirt. And though it’s hard as hell to make out, I think her ear look like Gwendolines. Hope it’s her – she looks really strong.
sjweningsQuote Reply
It could be her stunt double, but that’s not a bad thing – it is a stunt double after all. Clearly they will be outfitting her to look huge.
It looked like the Hound was totally walloping that dude with a mace. That’s good – there haven’t been enough maces on this show yet.
Maxwell JamesQuote Reply
Dang you, WiC! I thought it was another Arya-related MGoT video!!

sjwenings,
Please, tell me you’re joking! :D :D It’s Gwendoline Christie because of the ears? :D
Honestly, guys, “stop this madness before I piss myself!”

I saw some pictures of her on twitter and she has the same hairstyle that she has in the video . So I think it is her .
JohnQuote Reply
Shouldn’t stunt doubles have the same hair style when they are supposed to look like the real actors?
Not TodayQuote Reply
And the fact that it’s a tall woman fighting…. And the short blonde hair. These facts had already been established – coupled with the ears, I think it’s a pretty strong case.
Edit: I suppose you might have meant “rather than her stuntdouble”, but that wasn’t clear. Even so, though.
sjweningsQuote Reply
True, but Gwendoline might wear a wig when filming. This was just practice.
sjweningsQuote Reply
Maxwell James,
Yeah the hound looked pretty awesome swinging that mace into the dude’s chest. I thought the guy holding the war hammer was the hound but when it zooms up at the last second you can see he’s wearing a different helmet. Everything I’ve seen so far about this season looks just plain awesome.
SamQuote Reply
I’m just glad Gwendoline Christie exists. Brienne is one of my least favorite characters, but because of the actress I’m psyched to see what happens.

From all the behind the scene footage I have seen, Rory seems a very down-to-earth guy…and kind of a goofball too :) It’s quite the opposite of the rough & fierce character he embodies.
In book #2, I became most intrigued by Sandor’s character and I think Rory is perfect in that role.
The scenes I look most forward to watching in season 2 are all the ones involving Sandor…and Sansa :)
TanjaQuote Reply
Ah yes, I see. You’re right, it would have been preferable.
The hound with a mace is a bit odd for me. I wouldn’t like to be one of those fans that obsess over tiny details but I did like that Robert was famed for his use of a hammer in battle. It added a nice touch to his character as you knew the strength he would need to be successful with it, plus it spoke about how he preferred to bludgeon foes rather tan kill them slightly more cleanly with a sword.
HouseLarkQuote Reply
Well, Gwendoline Christie doesn’t seem to be wearing a wig, here’s a couple of recent pics of her:

Epic the wonderful,
I agree. I like the idea of Brienne but I don’t think GRRM captured that very well. She’s more of a foil for Jaime. One thing I like about the tv show is that it’s not afraid to add layers/new dimensions to the characters. IE Cersei.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
HouseLark,
I know what you mean about the warhammer. However, in the show they never mentioned that Robert even used one. So it’s not really a big deal and I’m sure he’s not the only character in Westeros to use a hammer.

Some remarks:
Brienne fight scene – this is defenietly not the spot where they did film the melee – so, there would be another Brienne fight later in the season ?Who the heck is the guy in the full armour fighting Sandor in KL?

It was probably Gwendoline Christie, because if it was just a stunt double it seems A) a lot less likely they’d bother to put THAT specific practice session in, and B) a lot less likely they’d be making sure to hide the face.

I did enjoy Syrio and Arya’s practice scene, that was about it.

I watched Ironclad a few days ago. Wow, there’s all you can eat medieval fightin’ with shaking camera and all. I didn’t get to the end, but I would have if I had more time. Oh speaking of Syrio, isn’t that him in the background crowd in 1:23 grinning fiercely and waving a stick around? Just so, I believe..
