New MGoT video: Renly’s armor
By Winter Is Coming on in Filming, Media.

A new Making Game of Thrones video has been posted at, uh, Making Game of Thrones. This one focuses on the creation of Renly’s armor for the second season. Check it out!

YouTube version

Winter Is Coming: Bearded Renly is best Renly. Gethin Anthony looks awesome this season: the armor, the crown, the beard. Amazing the work and detail that went into his costume. This video is great!

I love the detail that’s going into the work of creating this series. Watching these little bits feels like watching a mini-version of the fantastic featurettes of the even more fantastic work on the LotR trilogy. The armor looks superb and is certainly fitting to someone that’s not just a king but a king with a sense for fashion (more so than sense for battle).

And winter is coming for those that just writes “first” without actually providing commentary on the subject…

Too bad all the work on his armor is going to be wasted by that excessive ‘velvet’ covering. It really doesn’t look like armor at all, IMO.

Oh, a Making Game of Thrones video at Making Game of Thrones site. hmmm. The armor is velvety gay flamboyant, but strong.

To me it doesn’t look like velvet until someone tells you. It looks like dusty hard leather. Maybe if it were Baratheon green? Though it probably would look too colorful then.

    Renly dies.

You have to use the GoT palette. Where blues are brown and greens are brown and browns are brown. Big bowl of brown. Chickety-chaco. Half choco taco. Quarter Chippewa Indian, Black Tintin, Jewish Mel Gibson. Brown.

Nice little (proper!) “making of ” video. I really enjoy these.
I can see why they made this one. Although Renly`s armour is very original , without this video all Simon Brindle`s hard work would get little praise, as the metalwork is largely invisible. I guess the armour will probably be commented on briefly in the dialog aswell.
More like this please HBO, maybe a little longer next time…..:)

    Katrina Brooks,

Westeros provides a link to the video on HBO’s site (not the MGoT site), where this Canadian was able to watch it: just select the US site when it gives you the choice between the Canadian and US sites. I don’t know if it works for other countries as well, but the videos have always worked for me this way.

    Two Feathers,

I doubt we will see the blue armor at all. I think the series has removed most of the colored armor and weapons from the series. At least the vivid colorings as deicted in the books. Maybe to keep the series more “real” feeling and less fantasy?

    We can hope though!

    Lars,

    I concur.

At first I was actually wondering why they made a video for a velvet jerkin and some admittedly fancy gorget. I was surprised to see it was indeed armor under the velvet.

Seems a bit silly to me since any battle would likely cut the velvet as it struck the underlayer of steel. Then again maybe that fits Renly’s personality perfectly since he is a bit of a slave to fashion.

Honestlty, I’d prefer him clean shaven and with cleaner and more styled hair, but the costume itself is impressive. Even though almost nothing looks like it does in my imagination, the attention to detail and the high quality of the materials in the whole production are simply amazing. I love it. I don’t agree with it aesthetically, but I love it.

Some people claimed that Renly was no more than copper-bright, but this puts the lie to them. When he had to confront his brothers — we saw it with Robert last season, and we will see it again, even more strongly, in this one — there was steel beneath.

Were it otherwise, Stannis wouldn’t have had to kill him. Of course, Renly pissed him off so much that Stannis might have murdered him anyway.

Yay, cool video. I’m impressed with how authentic they make the costumes in this series. Armor really is armor. PS: I also prefer Renly with a beard to clean-shaven Renly. It’ll be quite sad when he dies.

A great video. Renly looks very kingly, young, and handsome.

About Brienne, I see no blue on her. Just some steel that isn’t the color of bronze on her arms. If they were going to keep the rainbow guard she would be wearing a blue cloack instead of all bronze/brown colors. I think that’s why people see blue because the color of the steel clashes with it.

While it looks like a great costume, I would have thought they’d go for something a little more showy, since the armor is supposed to be immediately recognizable at the battle of the Blackwater. Maybe it won’t be as big a plot point as it was in the books.

Love the amount of work going into the show! That armour is great for Renly, it’s practical but with a heavy emphasis on looking good, suits him. I do hope that someone comments on how much he looks like Robert did as a young man now he has the beard.

That makes me think of something that really should have happened in the books. Joffrey needs to attempt to pick up Robert’s warhammer and fail miserably.

I’m with you! I don’t like Gethin Anthony as Renly, especially because now he’s just another variation on the “brown-haired bearded man in tunic and boots” standard Westerosi male. Visually, I’d love for him to be closer to his distinctive appearence in the books, but it’s obvious that everybody on this show is working their asses off, and they deserve ALL THE PRAISE for that. It must take crazy amounts of dedication to put that much work into a garment that, if not for this video, probably wouldn’t even be noticed. So thanks, Simeon!

I’m liking Renly’s beard and hair-do a lot. Looks more kingly than in season 1, which is fitting for obvious reasons.
The velvet on his armour does add to the opulence of the outfit and I like the gold gorget, however I always pictured his armour as being more flamboyant, as in more in your face. This seems tame to be to be Renly’s armour.

    Lex,

Agreed! As a lover of all things Roman, I found Rome to be a fantastic series. Kevin McKidd, Polly Walker, Ciaran Hinds, Tobias Menzies, James Purefoy…I only wish it had got a third season. The battle of Phillipi should have been the second season finale in my opinion. Thanks BBC for pulling out and ruining it for everyone.

Speaking of togas and orgies, I will say that even though it took a while Spartacus has won me over. It really picked up mid-way through season 1 and I loved the Gods of the Arena prequel. The last episode of Spartacus Season 1 is a perfect example of building up to an amazing climax. Sucks that Andy Whitfield passed as he was great in the role, obviously talented, and seemed to be a pretty decent human being to boot. Looking forward to meeting Crassus, Pompey, Caesar et al if the show ever gets a third season. It’s one of those shows that you dismiss so readily because of the over the top violence and sexuality but there is some good Deadwoodian dialogue in there, almost that Shakespaerean, Iambic Pentameter type speech pattern.

If you liked Rome and A Song of Ice and Fire I recommend Colleen McCullough’s Master of Rome series. It traces the fall of the Roman Republic beginning with the rise and fall of Marius, the dictatorship of Sulla, its aftermath and the rise and fall of Caesar, culminating with where HBO’s Rome ended off: Octavian’s victory over Antony and Cleopatra. Historical figures bow in and out throughout that series, just sparkling with life. McCullough’s Sulla and Caesar are fascinating characterizations as well. As much as I love Nicolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime, he would have been a fantastic Sulla.

    Rinso,

I honestly gave up on set design and costume design in comparison with the novels, it frustrated me right off prior to the airing of the first season. Once I bit my tongue I just sat back and took it all in and managed to enjoy this interpretation very much. And the best thing is when they are loyal to the text, they are indeed loyal to the text.
Sometimes adding things that should have been in the book ie: Ned seeing Arya before his Thomas More impersonation, or how Charles Dance with hair on his scalp and a slight beard, BECAME Tywin Lannister before my eyes, all these things heighten my enjoyment in an adaptation. Some moments work better on paper than they do on film and vice versa. Both for artistic and practical reasons.

Like all HBO shows, you need to watch Rome all the way through, from the start. Not in pieces. But I’ll say that Season One is a lot stronger (you can even watch it as a stand-alone).

Also, I’ve just been thinking this week about how I can’t stand Zooey Deschannel. I’ve only seen her in Hitchhiker’s Guide, but despite liking the film, her terrible acting rubbed me the wrong way. People rave about 500 Days of Summer, but it sounds like Hipster Hell to me. I also saw her on Conan O’Brien recently, and expected her to be a lot more engaging, given her huge popularity… but she just came across as immature and annoying. She just seems like she’s trying too hard to be cute and quirky. Anyway…

I always thought the “color guard” seemed like a bit much in a flamboyant kind of way… but Renly is all about flash and couture. I don’t care what the tv series throws my way.. I’m just glad they’re doing the books justice.. so far.

BRIENNE.. if only I had a font big enough for her! To me she’s like a female Ned and I can’t wait to see her kick ass. I hope they don’t ugly her up too much.. the books were so cringe worthy at times when it came to describing her. lol She has such inner strength and beauty, I can’t stand ppl thinking ill of her.

Here’s the thing… as FOX puts it, Zooey is “Adorkable”. Which is another way of saying that she is only tolerable is one’s level of attraction to her outweighs their level of sanity. Once one regains their sanity, one realize she is just a terrble actress.

    Lex,

I personally hate Hitchhiker’s and everything to do with that movie but I loved her in Manic, Winter Passing, and All the Real Girls. I think her exposure and identification with hipsters is what people find annoying about her. 500 Days of Summer is good, she is good and Joseph Gordon Levitt is good in it but in the i hate Zooey defense it is definitely the beginning of her Adorkable love her or hate her phase. Even as a Zooey fan I have not watched New Girl. It just doesn’t appeal to me as a good premise for a sitcom. As for her music I personally love M Ward any anyone affiliated with him including Zooey and her indie rock goddess friend Jenny Lewis. In that regard I think a series about indie music in Laurel Canyon/San Fernando Valley crowd would be a great meta vehicle for her.

She has veritable talent but she chooses to be an icon instead. Good for her but in this day of media exposure it’s what makes people write her off so easily. And her talk show interviews have never been good. If you watch her sister Emily (the Bones chick) in an interview it’s a complete 180 personality wise.

How are they going to do the Tyrell switcheroo at the Battle of Blackwater? The armour doesn’t seem to have a helmet in any of the pictures or concept art, so anyone else wearing it will be instantly recognizable. And if they use just a random helmet that we haven’t seen Renly use, it won’t click in the viewers’ minds that it’s supposed to be him.

I don’t think this would be a problem. I mean, in the books is quite obvious that the person wearing the armor isn’t Renly. Plus, if anyone don’t get the swap they’ll simple assume it was some kind of spell and that there’s more to come next season.. in which the trick will be revealed once for all.

    Idaan,

I’d guess there will be a helmet with it, we just haven’t seen it. Renly is preparing for battle, and actually fighting without a helmet (as opposed to wandering around inspiring the troops while wearing a crown) would be more than a little bit daft.

As for the trickery, I’d guess that Loras will wear the armour- more dramatically satisfying for TV and saves casting an actor for Garlan- and we’ll see him either getting ready or after the battle, it would be an emotional pause in an episode largely filled with carnage.

Yes, I too assumed it would be Loras not Garlan – it’s both cheaper and better dramatically. And Loras is already of the same height as Renly in the series.

His armor looks great and everything…pretty realistic looking. But the lack of color really bothers me! Would it have been that hard to put him in green? The books are full of vivid descriptions of everyone’s colorful armor and clothing. If nothing else, it seems like it would help non-readers tell some of the many characters apart. I totally understand some changes, like the kingsguard not being in all white (can you imagine trying to keep them all clean on set?). But would it be that hard to have renly in green? I was REALLY hoping to see some fancy armor in the Hand’s Tourney but was very disapointed.

Isn’t his helm meant to have huge antlers on it? If they can make the Hounds (fantastic) helm, & Gendrys bull helm, they should have the antler one (if it is Renly that has it)

    houndlover,

IIRC, he had the antler helm at the tourney (sadly not seen on the show), but it would be great if he had something along those lines for his new armour. It seems his knights have smaller antlers on their helmets, Renly may have one along the same lines.

In the scene with Ned and Robert in the tent (breastplate stretcher), near the end there is a shot where you can see Robert’s antler helm sitting in the corner (and looking rather badass), so hopefully we will get Renly’s this year.

Or even the same prop reused… But yes, I would imagine Renly would have some sort of helm for an actual battle – and hopefully a very distinctive one.

    tek,

I have no idea where to find a screenshot (maybe Westeros), but if you have it on DVR or your cpu, its Episode 5, about 6 or 7 minutes in, and it is the very last shot of the scene, just as Robert finishes saying “Come, bow before your king. Bow you shits!” Its just to Ned’s left (although you can see the antlers is some earlier shots).

What a horror Brienne is. Either bad casting or portrayal, but as big as she is, the armor still swallows her. She looks like a child playing dress up in her father’s gear. She doesn’t own it and is in no way martial.

    Josh Atreides,
She was just as bad in the first clip. Acting can’t overcome a bad first impression, when it comes to projecting an air of martial competence. She comes across as a lost kid, not a serious guard/fighter, unless D&D are making the whole King Renly arc into the joke of Westeros. If not, And If she can act the part then they are doing her a grave dis-service with her poorly fitted/scaled armor.

    FicusFan,

Acting can overcome a bad overall first impression: ladies and gentleman of the Jury I give you exhibit A) Mark Addy. Who everyone thought he was a clown in fool’s motley. And he ended up being fantastic in the role (unless you thought otherwise) I made the mistake of prejudging from some of the early pictures and videos and was pleasantly surprised or contented with what we got. I personally think is that the costume designers have set up a sense of fashion continuity within Westeros and have successfully made it look like something entirely different from what we are use to. You won’t see alot of the extravagant things in the book because that doesn’t translate to screen very well. To me it would negate the HBO feel. I won’t comment on Brienne’s armor because I, myself need to see her in action in order to make a full judgement. I can see what you are saying based on what we have seen thus far but I am forced to think about things in the first season that initially bothered me during the production process, and those are very few or I have made peace with them. I think we need to see the finished product. Then again, it’s your opinion, I responded because I found your post very mean spirited and overly judgemental and I am not trying to be belligerent. I was merely trying to inject some optimism here is all.

    Joshua Taylor,
I had no idea who Mark Addy was (or any of the actors other than Bean, Dinklage and Dance) so I had no problems with him being cast. Also regardless of his possible buffoonery, he looks the part of a king ( part him, part costume/makeup ). Brienne doesn’t. She is starting in a hole. I don’t know if its her, the production people or both. If D&D aren’t going for a joke, then I suspect they are deliberately trying to hide her ( doesn’t bode well for her) and most of her stuff will be done by a man in a wig carefully shot.

I am not a book purist, I really don’t care if the show and books have the same details. I just want the show to look realistic ( those parts that aren’t fantasy).
Of course that is just my mean spirited, negative opinion. Sorry if you are too delicate to appreciate it. Perhaps you should just skip my comments.

She has barely been in any video so far so I don’t know what you’re basing this opinion on. They are deliberately hiding Brienne in previews because people aren’t supposed to realize it’s a woman in the armor right away. Remember her introduction in ACoK? Seems like you don’t.

    Ours is the Fury,
No, I don’t remember a lot of the details. I read ACOK 11 years ago. But the book and show are 2 different things. A visual is worth 1000 words, Brienne doesn’t look serious as a fighter/guard – her armor swallows her. She appears to be a child playing at something rather than actually having the gravitas to be that something.
