A number of retailers are now offering a free copy of Game of Thrones episode one, “Winter Is Coming”, as a bonus for purchasing any other HBO show. It looks like you can choose whether you want a DVD or Blu-Ray disc. The retailers that are offering this promotion include Best Buy and Barnes & Noble in the US, Future Shop in Canada and HMV in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Just be sure you call ahead to confirm they have the discs, you don’t want to end up having an experience like Ours is the Fury!
Speaking of Best Buy, they are offering even more Game of Thrones-related promotions. First up, if you pre-order the first season you get a free Stark keychain. Secondly, Best Buy is offering not one but two, totally sweet alternate DVD/Blu-Ray covers, one Stark and one Targaryen. Check them out.
UPDATE: I reached out to HBO about the availability of these covers internationally. They have responded and said that they will be available in other countries and they are working on getting me a full list of retailers offering these cover designs.
Winter Is Coming: I already have a keychain and the first episode on DVD (thanks HBO marketing!), but those alternate covers are pretty rad and are making me seriously consider pre-ordering through Best Buy.

Those are awesome! I am always worried about preordering or buying this early though, since so often a collector’s edition follows. Is there any news on whether these releases are the most complete ones, or should we expect to have a version with more bonus material released soon?

I’m pretty certain these are the exact same editions as ones with the Iron Throne on them, just with different covers.
And I don’t think HBO has ever come out with a “special edition” or “collectors edition” of their TV show DVDs. The only thing you might gain by waiting is you could buy the whole series in some sort of fancy box set. But it’s highly unlikely they will release another edition with more special features.

I just bought Rome and Deadwood in those fancy single boxes (supporting HBO!). They’re really nice looking, and apparently the Deadwood set has a couple extras that aren’t in the single season sets. But overall I think it’s mostly the same content, just in a nicer box.

i preordered the stark set. also picked up my keychain today. the keychain is sweet. it literally is a mini stark shield. a buckler i guess.
i went with the stark one because i already have sooo many box sets with dark packaging… plus the dire wolf is badass. cmon..house stark.. winter is fucking coming people!!!

Don’t know about DVD but season 1 has been available in Australia on iTunes for months, 30 bucks for all 10 episodes–fantastic! A few episodes sure helps kill time on those Sydney-London flights (yes, that’s me hogging the wifi in the Qantas business lounge downloading the latest episode…). Why isn’t it on iTunes everywhere else?

Just to add to Winter’s posting for anybody who lives in Canada, the promo of a free “Game Of Thrones” DVD/Blue-ray disc is available at other retailers besides Future Shop, you can find the same deal at HMV, Best Buy, Wall-Mart and Zellers (soon to become Target) and even bookstores like Indigo and Chapters ( I think), as well as independent and small retailers (like Sunrise Records etc.).
I haven’t been to HMV yet so I’m not sure if the “Game Of Thrones” – Episode One DVD/Blue-Ray disc is also available separatedly for purchase…as some here mentioned is the case in the UK. Also bare in mind that the promos are limited and will be available while supplies last…and by what I did see when I purchased “Boardwalk Empire”, there were few GoT discs left at the store…

I’m not keen on paying for episodes I’ve already seen when they’re locked to one device and not even in 1080p. I’m looking to give HBO my money and get a nice case and bonus content. Once again we’ll get shafted paying artificially inflated prices on content that is delivered months behind everywhere else. HBO needs to ship internationally, and not region lock their discs – then they.could have all my money
