New “Power and Grace” trailer premieres on HBO Go
By Ours is the Fury on in Media.

The “First Look” trailer is available on HBO Go exclusively for now, with several exciting new images and scenes, including a glimpse at the meeting of Stannis and Renly on the green field that we’ve seen teased in several behind-the-scenes videos.

The 1:50 minutes long “Power and Grace” trailer includes flashes of Robb declaring his feelings about a new character to his mother (in the image above), Daenerys reminding everyone she has dragons and isn’t afraid to use them, the Hound fighting, Littlefinger holding an apparently frightened Ros, glimpses of beyond the Wall with Jon Snow, Samwell and Qhorin Halfhand and more. It’s a jam-packed trailer.

We also have screencaps at the WiCnet Tumblr.

Fury: What do people think of the new trailer? I loved it. Very exciting with lots of fresh footage!

So… how long do you thing before this finds its way to YouTube? You know this won’t dwell in obscurity for too long, and by what I’ve already read, it sounds like this trailer is the best one yet.

I was wondering if they were going to have the comet this year! Everything looks amazing, including the dragons and direwolves. I can’t wait to see what everyone thinks, that’s half the fun of having these trailers released. More please, HBO!

I loved it. Really need a High Quality one to discern a couple of characters toward the end as with the last one but overall a great trailer. Makes me want to go read some sections of Clash again, again. Anyone think that was a CGI direwolf. (not really a spoiler but a trailer spoiler)

BotB is going to be intense.

Did they push up Jon getting mauled by the eagle? I thought that happened when he was already with the wildings? I am SO EXCITED that they’re including his Bran-guided green dream this season! I can’t wait to see how they pull that off. God, HBO, just release it already. Patience is overrated.

Just watched it 4 straight times. Got better each time. No movie trailerish voice overs and subtitles. Just 1:50 of pure lines and scenes from S2.

Was very pleased to see that the red comet will be making an appearance and will be discussed. Other exciting glimses: There was a brief flash of a certain priestess in the middle of some dark magic… I saw the ex-King’s bastard taking out a Lanister. And I had to replay it and try to pause just right several times to make sure…. But yes! He gets slapped again! By Youtube’s favorite slapper :) Its one of the final frames and lasts a fraction of a second so will be hard to see without a screencap.

Everyone’s writing what they loved, so I’ll write what I hated:

    Jon Snow: I saw something.
Joer Mormont: Whatever is was… you’ll see it again

GIVE ME A BREAK. The rumors are that Jon sees the White Walkers take a Craster baby boy. This is such a stupid decision. We’re suppose to believe that Jon sees that and then just “oh well, I’ll see it again” rather than attack?!?! That’s why the Night’s Watch went north of the damn wall in the first place. And the Old Bear’s really just gonna go… ‘oh well, shucks, we missed it.’ Not a fan of this decision.

Robb meets Brienne? in the show because they have a scene together. Looks like Cat’s around when Robb meets Jeyne ?!?! Does Cat let Jaime go free while Robb’s there at camp?!? I was willing to believe they wouldn’t mess up Robb’s storyline, but I’m joining the ‘Uh-Oh’ camp.

This is terrible to write, but as I wrote when she was cast, Carice is too old. Look at her close-up. She’s not the beautiful temptress most of us imagined. She’s a great actress and probably the same age as Christina Hendricks… but van Houten doesn’t scream: this woman’s beauty could seduced the lobster Stannis.

I am sorry but the 2 second clip of the Dire Wolf growling at Jaime Lannister looked really fake and weak… For one thing, dogs don’t growl with their mouths wide open like that. Just looked really odd and unnatural. And it’s head to body proportion looked more like that of a coyote then a wolf… Really disappointed…

On the bright side, everything else looked really great. But the fakeness and coyote like appearance of that Dire Wolf just looked aweful…

Carice looks fine to me. Striking and powerful. And in her defence they chose the worst possible shots of her for the trailer. When you see her sans clothing all will be well. That said, I will take myself out of shallower waters and say this: better to have a good actress than simply just a pretty face. That’s what Ros is for ;-)

    Peace unto you.

They want to have a good model of something a Dire Wolf would look like they need to research giant Alaskan Malamutes… Malamutes have a ton of wolf genes in them and would be the closet thing to the actual Dire Wolf…

This is 145lb Malamute… Picture a Dire Wolf 3-4 times this size and in it’s proportion… Because that Dire Wolf in the trailer just looked like a big coyote…

it’s certainly hard to tell if it is Irri or Doreah that Dany is holding. From pics of Dany with her handmaidens, it looks like Irri has black hair – vs Doreah who seems to have a reddish tone to her hair. Both have relatively straight hair. Lighting could be deceptive in this shot, but I agree it looks more like Irri’s hair.

On a similar note: the producers might have heard everyone last year bitchin about SEXPOSITION and had an attitude like yours: “Deal with it.”

    Arthur,

First off, I partly agree with you. I need to see how it plays in the show itself to give my final judgment (I have a happy ignorance when it comes to judging a film or show from a trailer). But I kind of resigned myself to not be too impressed given its a TV show with a larger budget than most TV series yet not a film budget either.

Reproducing the effect of fur and particularly an animal so it does not appear cartoonish or too monstrous is a difficult thing to do, especially when you have a contract CGI company doing the work on a TV discount as opposed to WETA or ILM. Then again, some people hated the CGI rendering of the dragons at the end of season 1.
The quality of the CGI in season 2 is definitely going to have a polarizing effect.

Yeah that’s the shot. The one of her near the end in the throes of ecstasy is a better example. Personally, just find a particular video of a particular scene from Black Book and you’ll see what I mean. That shot is just not a flattering image of her. As for correcting mistakes are you suggesting they recast Mel? I mean Lena Headey’s casting was a divisive issue as well given the result (I am still not 100% with her yet, though she seems improved in the trailers thus far) and HBO didn’t recast her.

I was in fear of this. I would of been fine if it just looked a lil fake. But what I just saw did not even have the correct proportions. At least give it a large head and make it look formidable… It honestly looked like a big coyote… It was almost laughable, a wolf growling with its mouth wide open? Come on man…

I will still be a fan and love every episode… Just wish they gave those wolves more thought and maybe a slightly bigger budget… This is a fantasy series right? Put a little effort in creating a realistic fantasy aspect via special affects… Hey at least it wasn’t claymation…..

Its amazing how people can make critical statements about the whole season based off a trailer that shows a series of brief shots that barely last a second in most cases. It’s one thing to judge the trailer, but to make these broad assumptions about casting, cgi and added scenes is just ridiculous. Loved the trailer though and now I really can’t wait for April 1st.

No, that was definitely CGI. For one thing, when was the last time you saw a wolf growling with its mouth wide open like that. When wolves growl they are threatening you or trying to warn you to back off. Their mouth only opens right before they lash out and attack. They don’t slowly walk over to you with their mouth wide open growling… Maybe, if that part wasn’t so fake, I wouldn’t have felt so disappointed…

Since Brienne’s with Catelyn, this must happen late in S2 – almost certainly well after he’s met Jeyne – he’s probably already married her by the time Cat returns from her mission…

As for Catelyn letting Jaime go, Robb might go off to fight some battle leaving Cat and Jaime in camp… and giving her the opportunity to free him. Not much different than her freeing him from RR if you ask me.

Not much different from the books in the essentials.

The more I think about it, the more it annoys me. I am guessing what happened here is the CGI company was told to make the dire wolf walk towards and growl at Jaime Lannister in that scene. But, the producers probably did not think they would have to explain the natural mechanics of how a wolf or dog growls. So I will do it for them…

Hello CGI team!!! When a wolf growls, they have their mouth completely closed and their lips curled back exposing their fangs… They do not have their mouth wide open…. Please reCGI this scene with the proper natural mechanics of a wolf growling… THX!

Holy crap. I hate to use superlatives like this, but that was definitely the most bad-ass trailer we’ve had in the history if GoT so far. Movie quality, really, with tons of impressive and eciting imagery, a host of great lines from characters old and new, not to mention of shots of things that up until now we weren’t even sure they would have in the series – the comet, for example. Ugh, so exciting.
Now we just need it in HD. Come on, HBO!

    Joshua Taylor,

You know something Joshua, you could be right. I think I am just being really hyper critical. Hopefully, they just wanted to be nice and give us a little taste of the dire wolfs and dragons even though they probably aren’t totally fleshed out yet. The show has been wonderfully produced and I have full faith that a scene of a huge dire wolf growling while its mouth is wide open would not get overlooked and put in the final cut. I just was looking forward to seeing a bada$$ dire wolf, one capable of killing horses in a battle, one the size of a pony… Not what I just saw in that trailer….. The whole “mouth open growling thing” bothered me. Along with the fact it looked like a coyote and not a wolf… Like I said before, the 1st season they used a few large breeds… I think a German Sheppard was Summer and an Alaskan Malamute was Ghost. I know a giant Alaskan Malamute and I always pictured the dire wolves of looking like that but a lot bigger and more lanky…

Something like this, but more lanky legs and bigger ears, longer muzzle…

    FacelessMan,

I was thinking the same thing. Modern dogs are fairly closely related to wolves and they growl open mouthed.. teeth bared to see. If that one evolutionary branch can growl like that maybe Dire Wolves did too.

Plus honestly, that is the LEAST of my Direwolf worries. Realistic movement, believable fur, more scenes and better size for the older wolves are all more important to me I guess.

Arthur: Like I said before, the 1st season they used a few large breeds… I think a German Sheppard was Summer and an Alaskan Malamute was Ghost.

IIRC, Ghost was an all-white german shepherd and the rest of the wolves were Northern Inuits.

And given Isaac’s comments in the recent interview, at least the dog playing Summer is sitll involved – so they must be using a mix of CGI and animal. That means they will be trying to make the CGI creatures look dog-like (rather than wolf like), in order to make the transition from animal to CGI as seamless as possible.

Inuits are a tribe of eskimo type people that created the Alaskan Malamute. So the fact that those dogs were “Northern Inuits” is just another way of saying. The Malamute was a sub-tribe of the Inuits. I watched the scenes with SUmmer and Ghost. Ghost is a Malamute, Summer was a Shephard.

I thought they used Northern Inuits as Direwolves… OF course they look like a cross between a German Sheperd and a Malamute. I think those are two of the breeds in the mix actually.. and Huskie and something else if I recall. So, I’m sure some of the litter may have slightly different looks to them with such a new breed only around since the 1980s.

I’m still a little fearful honestly, but that scene was soshort I can’t judge just yet.

    Lars,

No, that was definitely CGI.For one thing, when was the last time you saw a wolf growling with its mouth wide open like that. When wolves growl they are threatening you or trying to warn you to back off.Their mouth only opens right before they lash out and attack. They don’t slowly walk over to you with their mouth wide open growling…Maybe, if that part wasn’t so fake, I wouldn’t have felt so disappointed…

Eh… You do know that the sound we hear in trailers (& episodes) is a sound mix recorded and edited separately from the shot, right? They are just as likely to mix in sound of growling onto a shot of a real and CG wolf with its mouth open. But then again, with your “expertise” – you should have known that.

I watched the dire wolf scene again and again and it looked nothing like that youtube video. and Arthur, haven’t you ever had a dog man? he wasn’t exactly growling, he was more like snarling and threatening, and they do that with their mouth open. I’ve had dogs my whole life, granted their not wolves, but that is how they snarl, they bare their teeth and growl/snarl to threaten.

And now I will not admit that it was subpar cgi, I thought it looked very believable, espcially considering last year that had too cut so much out because they couldn’t train the real dogs properly.

    Arthur,

Dogs certainly do curl their lips and bare their teeth… maybe not as they growl or even with agressive intent all the time honestly.

I swear I’ve seen wolves bare their teeth and snarl or growl too, but usually if my memory serves it is berofe the snarl or growl more than during. I will have to check some documentaries this week and see.

Most movie dogs are trained to do that though since the bared teeth look more scary to the majority of people. I guess I understand why they have them growll or insert the growl if that’s the case – even if it’s inaccurate.

bottom line, even though its a ridiculous point, wolves/dogs DO have their mouth open when they snarl, when there really pissed and really wanna be threatening. I have an old dalmation, who is extremely cranky, and will do the exact same thing.

really, it was such a quick glimpse we prob cant even get a decent screencap of it, so obviously we really can’t judge the cgi until we really get a good look at it, although for the record, the half second I saw looked completely fine.

I just think the trailer was so awesome your nitpicking, which is cool, but I don’t think we can give the direwolf anything other than an incomplete grade at this point, although for the record I thought it was fine, from the glimpse I got.

Okay, maybe I caused this confusion. When a wolf/dog growls, yes their mouth is not completely tightly shut. Sometimes it is open a little but their lips are curled back and fangs completely exposed… That dire wolf just was walking towards Jaime with his mouth open growling. No fangs no lips curled. it looked really unnatural. Can you see my point at all? I do not want to argue about this anymore. I am just saying that dire wolf scene was bad.

    Joshua Taylor,

Yeah I completely agree, we can’t judge from such a quick shot and the video quality, so for now it has to be an incomplete grade, but I don’t think anyone can say at this point with any certainty that they think the cgi looks bad.

I also completely agree with you about Catrice, I don’t see how people can say she’s not seductive or attractive enough, she’s freakin beautiful imo, and I definitely see Melisandre when I look at her.

Yeah there are gonna be a couple of tweaks, some are already obvious from the trailer (robb and brienne meeting, osha basically taking over for the reeds) but their minor in terms keeping up with the original story. I mean it makes sense Robb meets Brienne, they wouldn’t really have to change anything, at the end of acok Cat comes back to the riverlands with Brienne, and robb is still fighting in the westerlands and reunites with Cat when he returns in book 3, so they just moved the timeline up a little bit and had Robb return early (and probably freshly married) so he could meet Brienne, nothing really drastic. Even his love story isn’t a drastic change, in the end he hooks up with a girl he’s really not suppose to hook up, they just changed who that girl was.

And I have this hunch that there gonna keep Robb’s war in the Riverlands, and not have him invade the Westerlands. Which sucks but oh well, I could be wrong.

The trailer looks awesome. The direwolfs look just fine to me, the story seems to be fast-paced. I think Melisandre, Stannis and all the rest of the new characters are gonna be awesome.

I do, however, have one concern – please don’t kill Irri off. Please. She brings much more to the show than Doreah. It’s already SUCH a shame we won’t see any more of the Irri – Rakharo chemistry, so – for me – it would be a huge mistake swaping Doreah’s death for Irri’s.

I know this is probably a really minor, irrelevant thing, but she’s such a sweet character; she made the Dany storyline much more interesting to me.

Hey man don’t get me wrong, I feel for you haha, I know you weren’t trying to start a big drama over the direwolf, you were just pointing out what you didn’t like about the trailer, however small it may be.

As for the DWolf, Eh, yeah I guess you can kinda see that, but like I was saying earlier, it might not even be a complete product, and the fact that the shot was so quick and the resolution so bad (at least for me) tells me I can’t really judge it to be bad or good or anything until I see more. So no I don’t share your opinion that it was bad or unrealistic, I can’t say for sure it was great, but It looked real enough to me, you can slightly make out him gaping his mouth a little wider then it should, but its small potatoes. I’m not gonna say I thought it looked bad. Actually I thought it looked really good at first, yeah there is a tiny flaw here and there after being pointed out, but I still don’t think its bad at all, I just have to reserve judgement until I see more.

    Arthur,

Well don’t quote me on it, and I can’t speak for future seasons, I strongly believe this season you wont see the Reeds at all.

And yes, as I said earlier, and as Arthur pointed out, its actually an old nan line (sort of). But it just goes so well with where I think they’re going with Osha, making her this wise wildling from north of the wall who will help bran with his warging and greesnsight because north of the wall they still believe in those things. And her calling the comet for what it is, dragons, in the trailor when no one else really knows what it is or what it means ( at least in the book they don’t), really confirms in my mind that there combining her with the reeds. Just wait, you’ll see, I’m willing to bet at least for this season she will be the wise one who mentors bran

    The Greatjon,

Yeah, this will be my last response on the dire wolf comment. The rest of the trailer looked awesome to me. Just that 1.5 second scene didn’t float well with me. And now that I hear Bran’s cute girlfriend Meera Reed won’t be in the HBO series I am sad. I was waiting and waiting for her to be cast… Then i thought maybe they will wait until season 3 to broaden Bran’s story and cast her… But now people are saying that awful Osha character will be taking the place of both the Meera and her brother Jojen who had the “greensight” that basically saved Bran’s a$$, I am even more disappointed. Bran has the potential of being the most powerful character in this series. They should show him more respect…

I hope you’re all wrong about the Reeds. They are a huge part of the series and their talents are unmatched. What about Rickon who’s going to take him to Fantasy Island, if Osha is babysitting Bran?

I think Bran is going to be a HUGE force in the end… Think about it… He will become like a god. He WILL BE an old god. And… He will be able to skinchange into one of Dany’s dragons…

The reeds may yet appear – Even if they are not in season 2. They could be introduced in season 3 as kids that Bran/Rickon encounter as they head north.

And Arthur – relax. Hopefully you’ll have a less trollish attitude in the morning about the issue. Your expertise in the matter has already been debunked by many posters, not to mention your irrational belief that sound mixing (growls) have anything to do with whether or not a creature is CG or not. (or good/bad CG for that matter)

Here’s some free advice from me to you. When you have dug yourself a hole, you need to stop digging. Trying to dig further to prove yourself right only makes it look worse.

i don’t think they plan to replace the Reeds with Osha. in his last GoT interview David Benioff said that even if season 2 doesn’t exactly flow like ACoK, they remain faithful to the series as a whole. a few ASoS events will be moved to season 2, pushing the rest of the unfilmed ACoK events to season 3, most likely including the Winterfell arc. besides, Reek wasn’t cast, and filming the Winterfell arc without him won’t make sense. so yeah. i have faith in the series creators.

Just because there were prehistoric beasts on our world called “dire wolves,” it does not mean the ones in the fantasy book where dead people come back to lfe are the same thing.

Unless you really think komodo dragons can fly and breathe fire because they’re CALLED dragons.

    P. S. You can’t Impress komodo dragons, either. But please do go to a zoo and try it. Just make sure you have your phone-cam going when you do.

Great few minutes. Not enough of [production] Dormer…the B.T.S. give great shots of her, but if in the official trailers I only see the clip of her stripping from behind in Renly’s tent for the entirety of the promo season, I may go Marg-crazy.

That said, I love the Brienne shots, seeing Jeyne (sort of), and I think Michelle Fairley looks exponentially more gorgeous this season than last.

Obviously my interests lie in the women of Westeros….

I’m in agreement with Arthur re the direwolf though that is based off of a poor resolution version. I wasn’t paying attention to the specific mechanics of how wolves move and act or anything but something looked off to me about the direwolf and reading through what Arthur posted, I think it’s exactly what he said that bothered me.

KG, you could get away with a lot by arguing the “fantasy” element though. That would invalidate any possible critique someone could have of any fantasy creature moving “unnaturally”. The rule of thumb to me is – if the way a fantasy creature moves and acts doesn’t distract you or jar you out of what is happening, then the job is done right.

I had some issues with the red tone in one or two shots but I think it’s probably just the bad encode. I’m sure when it pops up in 720p, it will look fine.

Everything else looks awesome though. There’s so much to take in. I just watched the Fear & Blood trailer again from last year earlier today and watching this now, they’ve certainly come a long way in the cutting of their trailers.

When Arya and her group with that Crow guy decide to wall up in some little fort. Remember? they refuse to open the gate and the Lannister men swarm in and kill them all. But Arya and Gentry and a few others get away by crowling through an underground tunnel, and right before she gives the Axe to that Faceless guy and Bitter and that lot??

I don’t really think this “this is fantasy wolves”-argument works too well.

If they don’t act/look much like real wolves, we will get a fake impression of them, I think, since we’re so used to dogs/wolves acting/looking like they do.

At the very least, I hope some character in the show reminds the casual viewer with a dialogue going something like “They’re just wolves…” “Hey! These are DIREwolves, they are different in oh so many ways, so don’t expect them to be too similiar”, ehh…

By this time in the novel, none of the direwolves were fully grown. If you don’t want people to think you’re some jerk, you might want to reconsider saying things like “I will stop going on and on about the dire wolf. As long as you all admit that shot was very fake looking”; it’s really rude to take over a discussion like that and then say you’ll only stop if everyone admits you’re right. Plus, even if you didn’t know how to use the spoiler button, how hard is it to understand that people don’t want to read details of future plot developments here?

    Arthur:
Inuits are a tribe of eskimo type people that created the Alaskan Malamute. So the fact that those dogs were “Northern Inuits” is just another way of saying. The Malamute was a sub-tribe of the Inuits.I watched the scenes with SUmmer and Ghost.Ghost is a Malamute, Summer was a Shephard.

And this kind of thing is the other reason people might think you’re trolling. If you don’t know what a Northern Inuit dog is, it takes about two seconds to look it up. It’s also easy to learn, in everything that’s ever been written about the dogs on the show, that those are neither Malamutes nor German Shepherds. It’s fine to not know those things, but you just keep telling everyone else they’re wrong about everything– and then you complain that someone else is acting like “some kind of authority.” I don’t have any interest in arguing with you, but I really wish you would take a deep breath or two before your next dozen posts.

(Edited to add: oh jeez, I see you’re still at it. If you don’t care what people think, then you can just STOP already, because everyone else already knows extremely well what you think. And if you’re not a troll then you can understand that people can have different opinions about how things look, without being “in denial”.)

  206. Arthur
    Posted February 25, 2012 at 5:25 am | Permalink

    mummer,

Hey Mummer, her is wikipedia about Inuits.

In the late 1980s, the founder of the breed, Eddie Harrison, utilized several mixed-breed rescue dogs of unknown origin or heritage, crossing them with the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, and German Shepherd to produce early Northern Inuit dogs. The breed’s intent was to create a dog that phenotypically closely resembles a wolf in appearance while possessing the gentler, more trainable character of the domesticated dog. However, like many spitz-type breeds, Northern Inuits have a more “primitive” nature than many breeds and are not recommended for inexperienced owners.

Okay, you see the part where they mention Alaskan Malamute? What I stated on previous posts is fact. It is not my fault you do not know this.

Heres my edit… Again, I do not care what people think. I care about facts. I said that SUmmer was a german shephard and Snow was a Malamute. SOmeone said they were Inuits. I stated that is basically saying the same thing as saying they are a german shephard or a malamute. you talk about facts. Look it up before you try telling me I am wrong. Funny how I end up right.

    Any other questions?

Like I said, I’m sure the CGI post-production is NOT completely finished at this point. You often see trailers with more or less “bad” CGI but in the final movie it looks just great. Same goes for the sound editing.

LOVED IT. Every sentence is fantastic! I loved the backgrounds for the transitions! The actors (some) may not look as I imagined, but I hablve faith in HBO and I think they will do a great work. Loved the Dragon and the Direwolf ( even if the CGI isn’t perfect, I’ll still love it). And Ros was crying!!! That gives me hope that she may develop into a character that has another function than sex! We haven’t seen neither Jeyne Westerling or Balon Greyjoy in the trailers…

Ok red comet, finally, awesome! Cersei has a realistic wig, much improved. Tywin is ****ing badass, the Stannis/Renly scene looks great, will we get the peach? Dany’s dragons look up to snuff. Looks like the CGI will be quite good, despite what people are saying about the scene with Jaime.

Also LIGHTBRINGER! And Joffrey looking like the fantastic little shit that he is.

I think we will see the Tullys and Reeds in Season 3.

But so the writers must handle Catelyn in Season 2. I think it is a good idea that she is with King Robb. First: It’s her instinct; she wants to protect her boy. In the Books Catelyn perceived that Robb don’t want his mother in his near because she affects him and his decisions. So he sends her away to King Renly (Like the Books). After the Events in Bitterbridge (its looks like Storms End in the Show) she wants to return to his son’s camp. In the meantime Robb must win a battle this season (mustn’t Stafford Lannister), the audience don’t see this battle (Thanks the gods, waste of money) but there happened must of the Jeyne story.
It makes absolute sense that Robb and Catelyn spend time together on screen because else the story fork in to many ways. But here is the challenge. How they handle the Free-Jamie Action? In the books it was an extreme from Catelyn to free Jamie and it was only possible because Hoster was ill, Robb, Blackfish and Edmure away in battle and she did it only in reaction of the two dead Stark boys.
I’m looking forward to see how they will handle this on TV.

    Oh and… Awesome trailer ;-)

The Stannis and Renly scene is fantastic. But I’m not sure of the peach. I hope the peach appear in the Scene. Get peach on the show!

I like that they don’t spoil the fifth king. An only TV-View may think this means Joffrey, Stannis, Renly, Robb and Dany. So I guess we don’t see much of the Greyjoys in the next Promos, because to keep the surprise.

If I’m looking on http://wicnet.tumblr.com/post/18236578027/jaime-spends-some-quality-time-with-grey-wind I only see a half done CGI DireWolf (without teeth) released on a trailer for the book fans who missed the Dire Wolfs last season. I’m grateful for this concession and very sure that this CGI will improve for the real season. Remember 36 days to go…

someone mentioned osha taking on the reeds’ duties, i would guess other characters will have their parts given to existing characters that have like personalities. for example the kettleblacks might have their duties relegated to someone like meryn trant. the mountain might have his parts given to ser amory etc (since conan left to do the hobbit if i am correct?).

Let’s be honest now, that short clip of the ‘Direwolf’ isn’t exactly the stand out of this trailer, it didn’t look that good, BUT a) it may not be finished CGI, b) we should allow benefit of the doubt of all CGI on this c) respect that it’s a TV show and not a Hollywood movie then we can allow for the occasional shoddy CGI.

  227. Steve Hugh Westenra

I agree with whoever it was who said Lena sounded amazing in the trailer. I’m very much looking forward to her scenes now (not that I wasn’t before, I suppose).

Also, if it’s Irri who dies and not Doreah, I will be pretty disappointed. To me, Irri seems like the much more interesting character, especially since we don’t see many central Dothraki characters. You’d also think, given the criticism last year, that they would want to keep one of their only positive PoC characters alive.

I would have been fine with Ros disappearing back to wherever she’d come from, never to be seen this season, but if they are keeping her, I would prefer it to be more interesting and less exploitative and pointless than last year, and the trailer seems to imply that it will be better.

I’m still on the fence about Robb’s storyline changes (and probably will be until I see the whole season). One minute I think they made some good choices and the next I’m seriously worried.

Halfhand looks awesome – can’t wait to see he and Jon ranging together, that was an inspired bit of casting. :)

As for the direwolf, I was just so happy to SEE one, and liked the idea of Grey Wind guarding Jaime in his cell. Last season, the wolves were definitely underused, I’m sure due to the difficulties of training them, but it is good to see them have a presence second season. Hoping they will smoothly CGI them to a bigger size before The Red Wedding. We need to see a lot more Grey Wind to make Robb’s death more powerful. Though I expect if Lady’s death caused an uproar, Grey Wind’s will cause more so if they show the shot of what the Freys did to Robb.

I think they have aged up Melisandre as they did Cat – chose a woman more in line with Stannis’ age. She’s younger than him and still attractive, but not TOO young. I could see Stannis finding a mature woman more appealing than a callow girl.

Love the shot of Tyrion and the wildfire. That green glow looks wonderful!

Like that they’ve toughened up Renly, as he should be the charismatic one of the brothers. I am a tiny bit worried about Stephen Dillane’s Stannis, as Dillane is a lot more slight of figure than I imagined Stannis being. I hope he does not simply come across as sour, but that he also projects that unyielding powerful resolve that Stannis has.

Brienne looks good. Is it too much to hope that they will give her the bad teeth as well? :)

We got a few quick glimpses of Arya, but not a PEEK at Jaqen or Rorge or Biter. I hope they are saving them because their scenes are awesome, and not because they’ve been cut down to brief appearances, like the Hound in season 1.

And great to see some shots of Sandor fighting…I am really hoping we see major development in the SanSan story. Also looking forward to seeing Dontos, more Gendry, and the rest.

    I loved it!

Mel doesn’t look like I expected: I hoped for more over-the-top grandiose beauty. But Carice is a phenomenal actress and a beautiful woman so I shall wait and see until the show. (BTW I loved, loved loved the juxtaposition of the word “shadow” and the image of Mel)

The direwolf seemed fine to me – I thought it was rather exciting. If anything, I was a little meh about the dragon. Ultimately, it is a trailer though and far too soon to get in a tizzy.

I always liked Ros, but not how she was used. I have high hopes she will be given a non-sexposition role now!

The more I see of Brienne the more excited I become!

Finally, I love having Fury as a “mod”. She adds a certain badassery with a female touch. Badasswomen are the best!

    My 2 cents:

    1) Even the best CGI looks a little fake.

    2) In my experience, downsized, compressed video makes CGI look worse (compare TV broadcasts of movies versus theater or blu-ray of same movie).

    3) Westeros isn’t Earth. I don’t think it’s a big deal if the producers of the show make their direwolves different from real life, extinct direwolves.

    4) I’d rather have “fake” looking CGI direwolves that make real contributions to the story instead of big-eared dog cameos.

    Bob Loblaw,

Some of my favourite TV shows has CGI that ain’t amazing: Lost, Fringe, Supernatural, The X Files, etc. It’s never gotten in the way of a good story. But, I do think the CGI here will be far better than those I just mentioned. There is more budget and more care in the digital area. And, I agree, you can’t tell anything from that fairly low-res video. The visual effects for Avatar look poor if you watch the trailer in low-res…but they turned out amazing. So… I’m totally happy with what we saw in that split-second shot of the Direwolf! :D

Good trailer. Is that Ros that Littlefinger is talking to? Whoever it is, I think the scene might be about the assassination of Barra(?) and her baby. She was in last season when Ned visited Littlefinger’s brothel, and one of the shots of the earlier trailer was of her looking terrified, so I think they kept her being killed on Cersei’s order. So it almost looks like Littlefinger was attempting to comfort Ros, if that was her, because in the show she probably witnesses the murder.

Glad to see more footage of The Hound. I predict he’ll have a significantly larger part this season compared to last.

    Winterdark,

Most of the season 1 trailers were crap. These past 2 trailers for season 2 are way better than anything HBO released last year. The only reason people loved the trailers last year was because people were so excited for the show any glimpse of a scene or character would get people giddy with excitement. If you were unfamiliar with the story than the trailers for season 1 made the show look quite dull, thankfully the same cannot be said for the trailers this year.

Hadn’t someone said it, I’d never realized the wolf was CGI. Either some posters are really nitpicking or I’m too absentminded. It’s just a non-finished shot, it’ll look better when the season airs. Anyway, TV CGI is TV CGI and it will always look fake, no matter how well done is. Don’t ask for the moon and be happy with what you got :)

Everything looks perfect for me, but the idea of Irri and not Doreah being the one dying. It just doesn’t make sense: not only it’s different from the books, but besides Irri’s a Dothraki woman, tougher and more prepared than a Lysenian girl to survive in the burning desert. I can’t see the point of changing this, unless the actress playing Irri will be leaving the show for any reason.

Anyway, 10/10. Can’t wait for April.

What a lovely trailer to wake up to on a Saturday morning! It is so exciting to see that D&D and all the folks at HBO are loving this story as much as we all do.

In Season 1, Tyrion’s travels north, then south, then east, then west effectively controlled the pacing of the season and the order in which things had to happen. This season Catelyn is the one making the rounds. They may advance Robb’s story a little bit, but they can’t get ahead of Catelyn.

I think someone up above was spot on with the suggestion that Ros may substitute for Alayaya in Seasons 2 & 3. The only problem with that is that Littlefinger owns the brothel Ros works in. Maybe Littlefinger leaving town will make the scheme possible.

That looks like Pycelle in the cell to me. Shortened beard and hair. I freeze-framed it but it’s a tricky one to call.

The Direwolf looks great with Jaime, but I suspect it is a hallucination caused by his imprisonment/conscience for all the wrong he did the Starks. Something about his expression makes me think he’s surprised to see the wolf suddenly, as if it shouldn’t be there or isn’t /really/ there. It would also be a nice symbolism for his expedited arc, telling us what’s weighing on his mind with no dialogue required.

So sorry Ros didn’t choke on a ______ and die. Could still happen I suppose.

I think I spotted the moment that Catelyn sees Renly die. Ditto Brienne walking into the scene.

    Arthur,

It is a common misconception that Malamutes and Huskies are “part wolf” or were recently bred from wolves. In fact, according to geneticists, “sled dogs are no more closely related to wolves than Chihuahuas.”

    Wolves, Wolf-Dogs & Phenotypes

Malamutes are often used to play wolves in movies, but put them side-by-side with the real thing you would see major differences. They have a bigger, more square head, rounder eyes, shorter, stockier shape. Wolves are lean and rangy. They have long muzzles and disconcerting almond-shaped eyes. I thought the direwolf shown looked right.

{edit} Holy cow. I posted this before I realized everyone had already “dogpiled” Arthur. Sorry.

This season is going to be UNREAL. The scene that really stuck with me was Jaime face-to-face with Robb’s direwolf. Foreshadowing things to come? I think so.

Also, the look on Melisandre’s face was perfect when Stannis and Renly were bickering with one another.

I was really hoping to see Rattleshirt, but oh well. I can wait… even though I can’t.

    Azure Flame,

    Hey Azure Flame,

I am not going to argue with you about the hereditary aspects and differences of Malamutes and Chihuahuas. If you want to assume the Alaskan Malamute, one of the top 5 most ancient dog breeds, has as many wolf like characteristics as a Chihuahuas then that’s your business. I will agree with you that the Malamutes do look like wolves on steroids and are much more muscular and beefy. Lets not get into a scientific debate on dog DNA.

How about just looking at that dire wolf in the 1.5 second shot. It is walking towards Jaime as it is growling and baring its teeth… Oh wait a minute… I didn’t see any teeth. Do you? Let me rephrase that. It is walking towards Jaime with its mouth just gaping open making a growling sound… Looks ridiculous.

Did anyone notice Lady Melisandre in 1:18? Look’s like she is giving birth to one of Stannnis’s shadows. Like I said before. Hope the CGI for the shadow being born out of her womb is decent. I understand this is a TV series but its a FANTASY series. You’d think they would set enough money aside to have the fantasy elements a little more upscale production don’t you think? Otherwise why not just go with remaking The Tudors series…

    Varamyr Fourskins,

ROME was an awesome series. I really loves watching the Pulo and Vorenus characters. It also got very rave reviews and rating. I always wondered why they stopped it. And I found out it was because the producer passed away after season 2 and he was the driving creative force behind the series. Such a shame!

    Hey Marc,

So its an animatronic model? Maybe that explains why it looked so fake. Are they planning on doing some CGI around the model and just using that as a base and visual acting stimulus for the actors? If that is the case, and this is just the model without the CGI over it. Then the dire wolves do have the potential of being really bada$$… It would also explain why the teeth were missing. I really hope that is the case!!!

    Arthur,

What are you talking about? The driving force behind the series was Bruno Heller and he went on to do The Mentalist and is still doing that series today. He’s in very much alive and in good health.

Rome was cancelled because of its high production costs (and because Chris Albrecht just loved to cancel amzing shows) still if it hadn’t been canceled for that reason it would’ve probably been after half the set burned down a couple of months later.

I also wished the series would spend less time on the whole made up Robb and Jeyne Westerling love affair. I mean it did happen in the book but Jeyne was a very minor character. All we know is the was beautiful with nice big “breeding hips” and Robb married her instead of that Frey which caused the whole “Red Wedding” horrible event. And when the Lannisters captured Jeyne, it was very clear she wasn’t the real Jayne… Martin went out of his way to discribe her as a thin girl, not the curvy real Jeyne Westerling. So I am beating Jeyne will have a big role n the future. She has a Stark cooking in her belly afterall…

I am glad to see I am not the only one concerned about the Reeds. To me they are an essential element of the entire ASOIAF series. They clearly represent magic returning to the world of Westeros, and NOT having them leaves a big hole in the story-or so it seems to me. I like Osha, but this seems to be a bit too much deviation. In ASOS they meet up with Sam at the Wall in one of my favorite moments in the whole series!

I’d guess that they would kill Jhiqui or some other anonymous handmaid before they’d kill Irri. Irri and Doreah were equally important in the first season. I’m not surprised they aren’t killing off Doreah but I don’t think that keeping her means they have to get rid of Irri. And it is a bit problematic if they start killing off POC and swapping out their character’s roles with Caucasians.

Think logically… Recall all trailers from season 1 – there was no CGI. Now it is half of it. They don’t put all special effects to trailers, because it costs… They had model of dragons from season 2 and there was not a lot of work, but they want to leave us some suprises, probably direwolfes… In nearest week or two they will probably put lector’s voice in foreign language offices of HBO. Bran is approximately 10 years old in the TV series. Meera Reed is 16. They’re not going to be having a romance if she turns up and is depicted true to the book. (Down the line when he’s a grown man, if he survives, anything’s possible of course.)

If you mean Doreah, she’s not Dothraki but a Lysene slave bought by Viserys. And judging for your vocabulary about women, you can’t be older than 12.

It seems you’re obssesed with shipping, especially BranxMeera. Bran’s just 7 in the books and maybe 10 in the series. Meera’s 16. No way they would be lovers, at least not in a long time XD

    Arthur,

I don’t hate the Reeds, but honestly I won’t miss them at all. Jojen comes across as pretty corny in the books with his weird lines, and I think it would look much worse on the show. Meera doesn’t actually do anything that important. If they had to cut some semi-major characters from the show–the show has a huge cast and can’t incorporate everyone–I’m glad it was the Reeds. In my opinion, of all the POV characters Bran’s chapters are almost always the least interesting, and with only ten episodes for the show, it makes the most sense to give his arc the biggest cut. Hell, even GRRM only gives Bran seven chapters total in ASOS, AFFC, and ADWD combined.

AGREE and I think book/show Osha is waaaaaaay more interesting.

The list of non-POV characters that I actually cared about when reading is very small. They include: Yoren, Gendry, Osha, & Stannis. The show has enhanced my concern for them. I even felt a twinge of pity for Stannis in the trailer.

I agree somewhat. Bran may be pushed aside with a very minor role in the books for now. But the platform is set for him to be a huge force in the future. This can not be denied. And his scenes would be more interesting with a romantic love interest of some sort. Jojen is needed to kind of guide Bran and explain to him his potential powers. Maybe they will have Osha play this role. But if this is the case, all Bran’s scenes will be very dull IMO.

Meera and Jojen would make the scenes more alive and as their relationships grew it would become interesting…

I don’t hate the Reeds either, but I think with casting Natalia Tena as Osha, they’re also looking to keep her in the show instead of heading off with Rickon at the end of Season 2, not to be seen since. As people have theorized, the Reeds’ dialogue and story with Bran may pass over to Osha. I wouldn’t mind that to be honest. I do like the Reeds, but as you said the cast is huge, so perhaps they’ve had to make a few sacrifices in characters without destroying any of the story.

I wouldn’t miss the Reeds. Sure, they’re nice characters, but not irreplaceable. Meera’s role is providing food and protecting Bran, which can be filled by Hodor. Jojen’s role is lecturing Bran about warging and old magic. That’s what Osha has been doing during S1. Later, when the siblings’ splitting come, Osha can take Rickon as in the books, while Hodor can care about Bran alone… with some help from the warging kid.

Actually, I’m more concerned about Reek. Characters like the Reeds, Aeron Damphair or Brynden Tully can be filled with another role or even cut, but Reek, as far as the books go, is really necessary. Hope we’ll have some news about this character soon.

The problem with Osha going with Bran beyond the wall is that it negates the fact that she’s RUNNING from the North, because she’s afraid of the Others. I can see her taking Bran and Hodor as far as the Wall, but beyond that, not really. She’ll pass them to Coldhands and run South with Rickon, I’m guessing.

Ours is the Fury: And it is a bit problematic if they start killing off POC and swapping out their character’s roles with Caucasians.

On the other hand they already made two white characters black (Xaro Xhoan Daxos and Salladhor Saan).

I think we are all getting ahead and reading a little to much into Bran’s story and Osha covering the Reeds. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Bran’s story is going to be on hold until season 3. So the scene with Hodor, Bran and Osha is probably way before Winterfell burns down. I could be wrong but I swear I read something about Bran’s story being put on hold…

That would explain the lack of the Reeds, Reek and Rickon. All the “R” characters lol…

    Virtus,

Yeah, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I think in the book her line about the comet is that it means “fire and blood”, so maybe they didn’t want her sharing one of dany’s big lines.

    Hi-Fi,

I think they just pushed his character to S3, as they’ve done with the Tullys. This means we won’t be seeing Theon’s whole story in Winterfell in this season. Maybe they will show him going to the castle with the idea in his mind, a la “I’ll show my dad I’m a Kraken: I’ll take Winterfell in my own!” or so.

Perkins: who will take rickon to fantasy island? The reeds wont be in this season but it doesn’t mean they wont be in the next. The comet line with Osha should be early in this season, so maybe she wont take over for the reeds(we have to get back to Howland somehow.. right?) they. Martin mentioned someone get killed that doesnt get killed in the books, rickon? i didnt see him in the trailer but it would ruin the manderly davos plotline..?

I’m sad about the Reeds too (I wanted to see Meera fight with her frogspear) but I’m coming to grips with Osha fulfilling their role. I predict the 4 humans and 2 direwolves stay together until the Nightfort. I’m more concerned about no casting for Reek/Ramsay. Don’t get how they can do faked death of Bran and Rickon without Ramsay.

How awesome does arya look? even in that half a second you see her at 1:35, she completely personifies arya imo. I think the actress who plays her is one of the best child actors out there, I truly love her character and the actress who plays her, when I look at her, I see Arya.

The boats heading for the beach landing gave me goosebumps. I was lucky enough to be one of the extras on the boats. After filming the scene over and over all night, We were allowed to have a sneak peak at some footage of the scene filmed on a handy cam by one of the ADs, and even without any fx, it looked awsome. Really proud to have taken part in season two, and especially the Battle of the Blackwater, and can’t wait to see the end result. I feel like they’re changing the story too much, with respect to Robb and Catelyn’s story. The main reason for Robb getting involved with Jeyne is because she comforts him with the news of Bran and Rickon’s death. Same reason for Cat releasing Jaime. One of the best scenes in the book is when Robb and Cat tell each other they’ve both done stupid things on the account of grief.

Now it just looks like a straight up love story, which is kind of boring.

WTF?! yes, I’ll keep grinding about that. I want my Reeds!

Looking forward to: dragons, direwolves, Tyrion being a badass, the you-know-what battle, arya being even more of a badass, and so SO MUCH MORE! I think Tyrion and Arya’s storylines are my favorites in this book, followed by Catelyn and her visit with the stag brothers! CAN’T WAIT!!!!

I didn’t read all the comments, but having watched the trailer 4 or 5 times already, here are my impressions:

    1. AWESOME! I thought the last trailer was awesome, but this is even better. It really feels like the trailer for a feature film. Great job, HBO.

    2. The comet: it’s everything I hoped for. It looks realistic, but just strange enough to make you realize it’s important.

    3. Osha’s line that the comet means one thing: dragons and the cut to Dany’s dragon screaming. I love the sound of the dragons.

    4. I LOVE that shot of someone on fire just after Dany says “we will burn cities to the ground.” Wow. Courtesy of the wildfire, I presume.

    5. Is that Gendry or Alton Lannister (or someone else) at 1:39 of the Youtube trailer????

    6. I am happy with everything they showed from Jon’s storyline

    7. Finally, I appreciate that in every trailer they give credit to GRRM.

Actually, one last thing. Did anyone notice how the third vertical line in the O of Thrones appears at 1:44? I think this is a hint that season 3 has been approved by HBO. I wonder if we’ll get the Roman numeral for IV appearing in the O this time next year?!

I really hope the Reeds and Bran’s great adventure out of Winterfell and to the great wall and beyond will come in season 3… I LOVE Meera and Jojen… They are key in Bran’s development as a skinchanger. Seeing as there is a lot of talk about splitting book 3 into two seasons, I really think that Jojen and Meera & the destruction of Winterfell might be moved back to season 3. Since we know that characters won’t disappear for an entire season, I think it makes sense for Bran’s arc to be delayed. Otherwise he might just be “traveling” for 3 seasons which seems a little ridiculous.

    Arthur,

Yes, I’m also hoping the Reeds will come later. Not just because of their role, but because of who they’re related to. Hopefully GRRM will let the producers know whether or not that’s important depending on what’s coming up in book 6 and 7. I guess it all depends on where they end the season at re: bran, theon, and winterfell, since there is that ONE important person they haven’t cast yet, I agree with those who said season 2 will probably end before the shit hits the fan. But then again, if that’s the case, the whole thing with Robb’s storyline is just ridiculous (see my comment above).

*sigh* okay, I guess I should trust the producers and wait for April 1st. But then again, I’m still hoping to see Blackfish on my TV… tear…

In the books she is just a banging hottie that Robb fell hard for. (Osha/Reeds stuff in the spoiler box.) The only reason why Osha can’t be taking over for the Reeds is because she wants to get the heck out of dodge and go as far south as possible. Yes, she can deposit Branflakes and Hodor at the Wall and book it with Rickon, but then Bran has no one of substance to talk to and his plotline becomes him trudging along. Either we have to have a/the Reeds for some kind of dialogue, or something HUGE has to turn Osha from going south.

It looks to me that the girl who Dany is holding is holding her ears or protecting her face, rather than completely insensible. And Dany looks fearful but protective. I can’t recall, is there any instance during which one of her handmaids or another woman is threatened?

I love Irri too, much more so than Doreah. The two potential payoffs for killing off Irri in place of Doreah would be that the loss would be that much more profound, and Missandei would eventually fill the role that Irri leaves vacant: that of interpreter and confidante.

Nice of you to give me your opinion on my posts. You have stated about my opinion on certain aspects of the Game of Thrones trailer, that no one cares about them. Then why are your bothering me? Why don’t you take your own advice and not care about my opinion? Don’t waste you time telling me, no one cares about what I have to say. Because this is obviously not true if you yourself have taking time out to write to me. Unless of course you feel as if YOUR opinion on my opinion is more relevant then any other opinions… Pretty hypercritical don’t you think?

I find it kind of funny here. All I have talked about is how I feel about things related to Game of Thrones. And all I get, by people who disagree with me, is personal attacks. Calling me names. Saying I am 12. It really goes to show who the child is here that has nothing constructive to say. All the arguments I had with people who were constructive died down and the subject moved along to something different. Basically we agreed we didn’t agree. You and some others on here just come out calling me names for not sharing a same view…

I may even agree with you, once a better definition source is found, where we can actually make a fair judgement about what is happening. Hello Lars,

I respectfully disagree with the whole premise of your argument. Nothing I have said has been “proven wrong”. Some things have come to light to maybe lessen my critical view on that awful 1.5 second clip of the dire wolf. But no one has “proven me wrong”. Unless of course you mean is it physically possible for a dog to have his mouth open while growling. Yes, I have conceded to that. But, as I stated before after I conceded that fact and it was agreed upon. The Lips would be totally curled and fangs exposed. That dire wolf just has a wide open mouth, no fangs no nothing. It looks as if a stuffed animal with its toothless mouth open is being pushed towards Jaime while “growling”. I also agreed with others that didn’ like my view that maybe the CGI wasn’t finished. maybe they rushed this trailer out and when the CGI is completed the dire wolf will be more fleshed out and have greater detail (maybe some teeth?).

    As far as my reaction from your earlier attack on me;

When a true 720p/1080p video of this trailer has been posted we can revisit the issue.

Look at you, again another “self appointed speaker for the group”. I don’t mind if you disagree with me and just speak about why you disagree and pointing out things to show your point of the matter… But how was anything I said “Debunked”, if you mean, other posters loved the dire wolfs, how does that “Debunk” me. Tell me? how does someone’s opinion get debunked? Because someone else’s opinion is better? What sense does that make? As for all that other stuff I said about chest beating and the like… Thats what it seemed like to me.

That is totally my feeling. I had no clue how many people I would offend by simply stating that the dire wolf clip, IMO looked like a 3rd rate ‘Sinbad The Sailor’ type CGI/Model/Animation. The rest of the clip looked 1st rate, top notch. I just pray the dire wolfs will look way cooler then that 1.5 second clip shows… If not, I still will love and watch the series.. Just when ever I see a dire wolf I will be dissappointed…

It also makes me fear on how they are going to handle other CGI things down the road… The mammoths, the giants… Stuff like that. They need to tell HBO that future seasons they will need a bigger budget for special affects… Or things, as it seems right now, could start looking really corny…

SerCountryFriedSteak: This is terrible to write, but as I wrote when she was cast, Carice is too old. Look at her close-up. She’s not the beautiful temptress most of us imagined. She’s a great actress and probably the same age as Christina Hendricks… but van Houten doesn’t scream: this woman’s beauty could seduced the lobster Stannis.

Speak for yourself, she can seduce me anytime.

HBO hit it across the Narrow Sea with this trailer, each one just keeps getter more badass than the last. Hopefully I will be seeing this trailer in theatres, as HBO was showing Luck and BE trailers in the local cinema houses.
Anyway, what’s with the Ros hate, except for the “play with her ass” scene, which I agree was overlong, overblown and overstuffed, her other ones were quite good. I actually liked her scenes with Tyrion and Theon, Esme is a beautiful and capable actress, although she needs to tone up her breasts, they were loooking a little flabby.
My opinion is she went to Kingslanding to be near Tyrion, and she is upset and crying cause she saw Tyrion with Shae.

    Arthur,

Just because there were prehistoric beasts on our world called “dire wolves,” it does not mean the ones in the fantasy book where dead people come back to lfe are the same thing.

Unless you really think komodo dragons can fly and breathe fire because they’re CALLED dragons.

    P. S. You can’t Impress komodo dragons, either. But please do go to a zoo and try it. Just make sure you have your phone-cam going when you do.

Martin’s physical description of dire wolves doesn’t even match the real thing, all they have in common is the name and the fact they’re very large doggies.

And I feel nerdier for even having commented on this aspect of the conversation.

    Marc,

wow, I can’t even begin to imagine what an amazing experience that must have been. It really does look amazing, like their about to storm omaha beach haha. I’m really impressed so far with how the battle footage looks. I know there was talk about how they just don’t have the resources to do the same battle in the book, but I really think theyll do it justice from what I seen.

and yeah wolfofdorne, its weird how Arya does kind of look like bran when shes dressed like that. I just think she’s the perfect actress to play her, and I really like her facial expressions in the couple of glimpses we saw of her, very realistic, especially the one were it shows her jumping back away from the cage, she’s really gonna turn some heads this year with her story line.

yeah and I did notice, as someone else pointed out, that the wildfire is green when tyrion was holding it in the jar, but in the battle footage it just looks like fire. In my mind at least, and I think theyll probably do this on the show, wildfire was never completely green, I just think it will be green at its absolute source, like when you light a stove and you see the blue flame at the base of the fire, I think it will be the same with the WF, where you just see the green at its absolute source, like youll see green streaks as they shoot it from the trebuchets, but when it lands and spreads it begins to look like regular fire, at least thats how I always pictured it as in the books, more of a subtle green, not literally green fire.

As for the people saying alot of brans story line will be cut and that the whole winterfell burning stuff will happen in season 3. I don’t buy it, for one I know for sure that when one of the producers was interviewed about the show awhile back, he said the ending of the season will be the same exact ending as the book, which can only mean the burning of winterfell if im not mistaken. Not to mention the behind the scenes pictures they took while in ireland, it showed Bran, Hodor, Rickon and Osha traveling, and it says the picture was from episode 10, thats proof to me. And also you have to consider the fact that a big reason Robb falls for Jeyne and Cat does what she does, is out of greif, as someone else pointed out, over the supposed deaths of bran and rickon and if you watch the ‘invitation to the set’ video, you see robb talking too what looks like oona chaplin (sp?) while he is holding a ravens message, hmm, which is very interesting. If you add all that together, Its pretty safe to say we will see brans whole story line for acok (minus the reeds) and we WILL see the burning of winterfell

    Arthur,

and I really do understand your concern, I don’t agree about the direwolf. But I do agree that there are alot of things we see in the future that will be heavily cgi, so its very important HBO stays on their game in that dept, and realize how important it is. One thing I will say, is reserve judgement on the direwolf until you see the finished product on the show. just because it looks crappy (at least you think so at least) in the trailer doesn’t mean it will be crappy in the show. Sorry to have to continue the direwolf topic haha I know its getting a little taxing to talk about.

I agree with you… The real Dire Wolfs here on earth were heavier boned and thicker in muscle. They were shorter and more stocky. There are to the modern wolf, what Neanderthal man is to modern human. They adapted to the ice age and as the earth got warmer they died out…

But that still doesn’t give the series the right to overlook detail like.. A wolf baring its teeth while it growls, just because Martin’s dire wolf is described as longer and more lanky then a normal wolf does it? That is all i am trying to say… I don’t want to get into a scientific debate about this. I am just asking everyone, don’t you think that dire wolf clip looked a little odd? It just didn’t feel right. Something was wrong. So I watched it over and over and noticed more and more things that bothered me… It just left me feeling disappointed… If you have watched it and honestly think the dire wolf looked good. I envy you!

Regarding the Reeds, I wouldn’t be surprised if they just held off casting them this season but they will appear. All it would take is a Jojen green dream to help them track down Bran and friends in the wilderness somewhere. I have a feeling Osha going off with Rickon is too essential to the plot to have her go with Bran north of the Wall.

I just wanted to get what i thought of them out there to see if anyone else felt as I did.

I am a HUGE fantasy fan… And to me those dire wolfs represent one of the coolest fantasy elements in the Game of Thrones books. I was hoping that they would be very cool looking and bad$$… Not a stuffed animal on wheels being pushed around on set with different camera angles…

It was mentioned here some time ago that the HBO scripts would veer slightly away from the verbatim book writing. True, there was a long lapse of seeing Robb or Danerys although their progression was mentioned here and there by other key characters. It’s no small wonder that HBO GoT begged more screen time there. I’m quite pragmatic and reassured as long as GR Martin stays connected to the production ( a wise decision since author Charlaine Harris gave AB free rein of her popular book series for Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, TB was a fiasco). Still script changes in GoT s2 which include ( from the clip) Catelyn sparring with Littlefinger after Ned Stark’s beheading just doesn’t make any sense. While some consequential elements are left out bloating a premise to beef up another character or timeline can prove hazardous. Although I did miss Osha and Rickon throughout book 3 and enjoyed the Reed siblings, I would think more screen time with Osha shouldn’t hurt the storytelling. I’m just anxious for GoT s2 to start and have fun watching it ( setting aside book versions in a separate perspective ). Anyone else concerned about the GoT timelines here ( esp. s2 clip ) ?

If no one gives a shit about people’s opinions why are people bothering to post opinions…. Oh wait, you mean no one cares about someone’s opinion if it conflicts with their own?

Is this an echo chamber where only praise of GoTs is allowed. Or can we debate?

Also, its pretty convenient to come out with bold one sentence attacks…

Again, I am not the one insulting others with personal attacks so how does that make me the adolescent and not you?

An adolescent can easily come up with that simplistic name calling attack…

And as far as expression my opinion like an adolescent…

I wouldn’t know, I bow down to you and your expertise of adolescent expression.

It is apparent your handle of the english language and your detailed thoughts and expressions that counter my views is way to advanced for me to handle.

There’s a scene I can’t identify at 1:35, between Jon’s and Arya’s : a dark-haired man, seemingly young, getting stabbed by a guardsman (probably a gold cloak), before a window, with kids (or an entire family) watching. Any guesses, anyone ?
As for Davos, he’s more in a cave (near Storm’s End) than in a cell… The bars could be the portcullis in that cave instead.
Regarding the scene about the comet, Osha isn’t technically taking over the Reed’s role at that time on the story, since the Reeds aren’t in Winterfell at that time in the books. Osha did answer a question from Bran about the comet in Bran’s first chapter, though the answer given here is Old Nan’s and the setting is different… I’m not bothered though by Osha taking over the Reeds’ role in the second part of the season, since she’s already teaching a few things to Bran about the wolf’s dreams and preparing his “epiphany” from the end of aGoT and the beginning of aCoK. I’m a lot more concerned by the absence of Ramsay Snow / Bolton, because I really want to see the sack and burning of Winterfell this season, for I think it would be a bigger mess with chronology and problematic for Bran’s stoyline, which is not dull and boring AT ALL in the books (I strongly desagree with that ; in my opinion, it’s even one of the bests…). And I don’t understand why some people here think that Bran would be missing for two or three seasons, since he has a storyline throughout aSoS It’s however relevent for Theon.
Drogon is great ; Grey Wind, I must agree, a little bit disappointing… Dany is still… different, I’m not sure to really like her that way.
I’ve a last question : why some people here think that Jeyne (Oona Chaplin’s character) is not the Jeyne Westerling form the books ? Did I miss something ? Moreover I don’t think D&D are moving ahead the Robb / Jeyne storyline a lot. The confrontation between Robb and his mother is earlier than in the books, ok ; but their first encounter and their subsequent marriage happens while Catelyn is an envoy, she’s only hearing of it after the deed ; so I don’t think the timeline is messed up here. And why complaining about Brienne being present at the time of that confrontation ? What’s the point ? Davos will be present at the meeting between Catelyn, Renly and Stannis, while he’s not in the books, and no one is complaining about it.
Great trailer anyway, though I prefer the last one. Can’t wait for April 1st (or later since I’m not living in the U.S.).

Nah, SCFS, speak for yourself. She’s almost exactly what I imagined Mel to be like.

    SerCountryFriedSteak:

This is terrible to write, but as I wrote when she was cast, Carice is too old. Look at her close-up. She’s not the beautiful temptress most of us imagined. She’s a great actress and probably the same age as Christina Hendricks… but van Houten doesn’t scream: this woman’s beauty could seduced the lobster Stannis.

I will join with those who are jonesing for a glimpse of the Greyjoy otherwise known as Asha. I can see why they’re keeping a low profile on her. Except for the freaks who pore over pages of cast photos at WIC [and read to the bottom of troll-filled comment threads], most fans will not recognize her when she first appears, which will put them in good company with another Greyjoy – the one who swore poorly considered oaths to a certain Young Wolf.

I imagine publicity for a certain bastard of Bolton will be similarly muted next season, and for a similar reason.

I’ve seen a lot of discussion about Ros and about the Reeds and I have a few things to say…
Ros: Some of her scenes may seem a bit unnecessary, but if you pay attention to the dialogue, there’s a lot going on in regards to character development. Someone in an interview said they do this intentionally, that there are some hefty dialogues that need to be said (the books are told from POV, which includes a lot of inner monologue that can’t always easily be shown), but don’t really fit anywhere, so they put them in a scene that will definitely grab your attention, a la a hottie banging some dude. And the scene with Pycelle in 1.10, I think is set-up for when Tyrion imprisons him for bedding whores during his reign as hand.

The Reeds: I’ve got a theory, that I’m sure isn’t anything new, and that is that Cold Hands is Benjen Stark, and that Starks being skin-changers isn’t something that has never happened before. All of the kids with living direwolves have wolf-dreams. I think the Reeds could be replaced by Cold Hands. He already helps lead Bran to the Three-eyed Crow, and if it is Benjen and Starks have been skin-changers in the past, then Cold Hands could very well have some knowledge on the matter. It’s possible that Osha gives Bran the initial knowledge and such, and takes him and Hodor to the Wall where they meet Cold Hands in that underground well.

Everybody seems to assume that when Jon discusses something that he saw to Jeor that it concerns the Others and one of Craster’s sons. I didn’t see anybody suggest that is was simply a warged vision of the wildling camp which, to me, seems much more likely.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Irri dies instead of Doreah for the simple reason that Dany needs to have some lesbian scenes in future seasons and one of the actresses involved is willing to do necessary nudity/sexuality and the other isn’t.

As for the direwolf, I thought it looked pretty good. I can’t speak to the realism of its mouth being wide open. Direwolves themselves aren’t exactly real. I feel for Arthur in one sense because I can see that he clearly wasn’t a troll. He just took something incredibly petty and turned it into one of the most obnoxious thread hijacks I’ve ever seen on any message board.

It didn’t really jump the shark until the post that said something like: “I’ll agree to stop talking about it as long as everyone can admit that it looks bad.” I’ve been guilty of overly legalistic discussion tactics on other message boards so I can understand what it feels like to need to continue digging that hole, but at a certain point you make yourself a target and you just have to give up even if you’re right, but I digress.

When I read the books, for whatever reason I picture Nicole Kidman as Melisandre. This isn’t to say I thought there was any chance that HBO would cast her, but it does say that I had a 40ish actress in mind, so I was actually excited when they cast Carice who I think is definitely sexy in her own way. For those who think she isn’t beautiful or seductive enough to play Mel, I just don’t remember the book ever saying that she was some great beauty. Her appeal should have something to do with simply being a red priestess capable of bending others to her will.

I love this trailer, and for a while I’ve been concerned about the compressed, 10 episode seasons but no more. It really seems to be working to the shows advantage now because they have to get right to the action and can’t wander around with red herrings like the books. Any changes to the story seem to be in service to that and I totally welcome it.

So, I kind of agree that the wolf looked a bit dodgy. But then I’ve been sceptical about the CGI-wolves since I first read about them. There were some less than great CGI in the last season as well, which you really have to accept since it’s a TV show with a limited budget. I would just like to keep that to a minimum, and so I would prefer smaller, real dogs to larger, CGI ones.

Also, if the Reeds are out, I think it’s great. There are some serious troubles with the books from now on, for anyone who’s not a huge fan, at least. They’re too long, they somewhat lack focus, the story arcs are all over the place and WAY to many new characters are introduced. They really do need to be streamlined for the show to work. One way to do that is to get rid of some new characters, another would be to use events from later books in this season.

Oh yeah, and about the ages of the characters: It’s clear Martin has absolutely no clue about age. With kids he’s just about two-three years off with everyone, from little Rickon, who at the tender age of 3 behaves like a normal 5-6-year old, to the older ones, like Daenerys and Robb. They succeed with things extremely talented and mature 16-17-18-year-olds (with a stretch of imagination) might be able to do. But there’s no way even the most precocious 14-15-year-olds could lead armies. Honestly.

I’m very thankful the show fixed that, since it annoyed the hell out of me reading the books. Also great how they aged the grown-ups a good 10-15 years. Some maturity adds a lot of credibility to a character.

I agree to an extent that a 3-year aging up works nicely, especially for the younger kids like Rickon/Bran/Arya/Missandei and to solve the problem of showing/implying underaged sex (Dany, Robb, Jon) on TV.

However, people in olden days mature faster, especially a high lord’s heir like Robb. He’s likely been sitting in his father’s councils since very young, as inferred by the scene of Ned taking Bran to watch him behead a deserter. If a father today takes his 7-year old son to see a movie with graphic beheading, people would cry abuse. Besides, Robb in the book is counselled by Blackfish and shadowed by Grey Wind. It doesn’t take too much stretch of imagination to believe that he, with help could satisfactorily lead an army. Same with Dany, who has dragons, Jorah and later Barristan.

Thank you, I always thought it was a bit funny how you can tell that GRRM has never had kids by how badly he’s got all of their ages. Tyrion was supposedly 13 in the book when he ‘married’ is crofter’s daughter but in the show it’s sensibly 16 (which is still probably too young). I have a 13-year old son and this is just ridiculous–they’re barely talking to girls at that age! No 3-year olds do not talk in full sentences! Yet he’s got girls getting their periods at 11/12, so it’s not like it was some other genetic race back then.

I am not a troll, I am not here to upset anyone.I am just speaking my mind.

Contradiction. Anyone who is thinking “this is so great”, and thus is not your opinion, is a “OMG OMG” guy, which is imo, fanboyism caricature. Then you say you’re trying not to upset anyone, and just expressing your opinion. I do think this is a contradiction.

    Conclusion:
    1. If it was done to create an argument, you’re just a troll
    2. If it was a ‘bad’ writting, then be carefull ’cause language is the key to human behaviour. It you write ambiguous words, you can create extreme reactions (Like the ones you already saw here)

Since we’re all fans, and the season is not available yet, there is no point -AT ALL- about arguing on something like this.

I’m a big fan of videogames, movies and shows, and I know about trailermaking tricks. I do think the growling is something added, which is absolutely not on the show (maybe there is a growing, maybe this one, but maybe not on this particular moment). It’s just like when you hear a character that is not on your screen, it’s a stylish effect, to make it “Cool” so the trailer will create hype. Just like using a music that is not even on the game/movie/show. A trailer is like a fanclip, you needs to put things people wait, but not all of them. And even try to trick them (Best way, put two characters lines one after another, making people think they’re talking to each other, when it’s absolutely not happening).

Remember the movie Hancock with Will Smith? You could not tell, with trailers, about the story, since the trailers did a good job showing us only the first part of the movie. I think this trailer of Acok is 100% fanclip, in which you really have to be a Jedi to imagine in-context.

George RR Martin wrote a fantasy because he was of the opinion that the majority of fantasy writers had no clue what it was like living in a feudal medieval world. This is a world where even if you lived past infancy you’re average life expectancy was 30ish. If you waited til you were 30 back then like so many do today, you would be considered and old maid. Medieval life was not the Shire. GRRM should be applauded for incorporating certain aspects of medieval life..and girls were betrothed very early.

And as far as Tyrion getting married..just because your son isn’t comfortable talking to girls doesn’t mean every 13 year old is. I had a raging crushes on girls well before I was thirteen.

Lady Olenna Tyrell: I’ve a last question : why some people here think that Jeyne (Oona Chaplin’s character) is not the Jeyne Westerling form the books ? Did I miss something ?

While she may be Jeyne Westerling she was only announced as Jeyne which is a little odd when all other characters with a surname get announced with it. There was IIRC even a couple of places that did announce the casting as Jeyne Westerling but then backtracked.

There was also a report from set that suggested Jeyne was foreign, while this may just refer to Jeynes great grandmother not being from Westeros (as in the books) given Oona’s natural accent they may have Jeyne herself being from somewhere outside Westeros (Braavos maybe).

    elvine,

I for one would be really annoyed if the Reeds were out for good. It just kills Bran’s storyline completely. His interaction with kids near his own age is vital… Besides the theory of Osha taking them beyond the Wall is all wrong. I mean there is just no way Osha would take them beyond the Wall even if Bran wanted to go there. She’d talk it out of him for sure. She just wouldn’t take him!! Even if the 3 eyed crow tells Bran… No just no! Osha was running away from the Others she would never take Bran and Rickon TOGETHER to the Wall. That’s just nuts. OK she wouldn’t actually go over the Wall because of Coldhands but she couldn’t know that could see when travelling north? This would be an incredibly cheap plot device just to increase the role of Natalie Tena. I hate that, i know they like her but it is no reason to completely alter / kill Bran’s storyline…

It’s more likely the group of 4 comes across the Reeds on the road in S3 and they take them north. Actually it could be some episodes into the season to spread out Bran’s meagre storyline and increase Natalie’s. That way she’d be shooting on the show for S3/4 combined and would be off for a shorter time which will increase the chance of not having to recast her… Only problem with this is that Summer has to come across Jon south of the Wall, i liked that in the Book! Really thought Jon was going to find Bran or something. They have to time that.

Still i hope / think the Reeds are just postponed to increase Natalie’s story but they will never let her replace them completely cause it would be cheap and unrealistic.

Not true, lots of three year olds do. My son did. He just turned four, so it’s not like my memories of that age are faded. But anyway, GRRM has admitted that he didn’t a great job with making the kids’ ages match their behavior because he never had children and didn’t know what were the right ages, and that the series has rectified that mistake.

There are just too many characters in this show already. Have you guys looked at the cast page recently? It’s a mile long! I want my non-book friends to be able to keep track of who’s who. I hope D&D slash away as many secondary characters as possible – especially in later books. There was a disconcerting number of small characters with names in ADWD. I didn’t need all that to achieve pathos. That’s all I hope to find in such a sprawling story.

I think Stannis looks great, I’ve heard some people are a little disapointed, but he’s exactly what I thought Stannis would look like. That second glimpse of him in the trailer, after he says “the iron throne is mine, by right” where he’s just looking at Renly, is perfect, his expression is normal, but you see his jaw clenched and veins popping out all over his neck and temple, exactly what they say stannis does.

It’s probably not. There are only ten episodes this season, ACOK is longer than AGOT, and they are expanding on Robb’s, Jaime’s, Dany’s, and likely Renly’s stories. Some stuff has to be cut, and frankly Bran has the least interesting storyline until Theon takes over WInterfell, so it makes the most sense to cut his story down. He really doesn’t do much his first chapters, so if something had to be cut I’m glad it’s him and not Arya or Sansa.

A rich woman would have been able to have children until her late 30′s or early 40′s, just like today. A rich man would be at the height of his strength around the same age, just like today. People died of infections, of accidents and of complications of childbirth in their younger years, they did not die of old age when they were 30 or 40 or 50.

And with your reply to the Tyrion-comment, you are missing the point. Yes, young kids can be interested in the opposite sex. But Tyrion’s actions with the girl were not those of any 13-year-old, in any day and age. (No, I’m not talking about the sex, I’m talking about the whole marriage and going off to live together part). Without too much a stretch of imagination one could accept that a boy of 15-16 with Tyrion’s upbringing could probably do what he did, but, as usual, Martin is a couple of years off.

Mormegil: The boy who would go on to be King Henry II first invaded England when he was 14.

The Invasion was a complete failure but he was still leading an army at age 14.

I think what you need to focus on here are two things. First, this supposedly happened in the 12th century. I should think the details of what exactly took place are unclear, to put it mildly. Secondly, if it even happened at all, it was as you say a complete failure. 14-year-old Robb is mature enough to win the respect of all his banner men, and then successfully fight off much larger armies.

Wolf of Dorne: Two words: Middle Ages. A time where six-years-old girls could marry a twentysome-years-old man. And again, a time where (as Mormegil just said) a 14-years-old boy could lead an army.

Add some fantasy and… it doesn’t look that impossible to believe. :)

I’m sure you understand that just because 6-year-olds were married did not mean they compare to 16-year-olds (or whenever you’re allowed to marry) today. At that time marriages in the higher classes were political and practical agreements, and the couple wasn’t expected to live together as husband and wife until much later.

    went googling… found this…

“Peter Laslett’s book “The World We Have Lost” details a thousand marriage certificates issued in Canterbury from 1619 to 1660; according to the documents, about 85 percent of English brides in this period were at least nineteen years of age when they married and only one in a thousand was thirteen (or younger). The most common ages at marriage for women was 22 years, for men 24 years; the median ages were 22.75 for women, 25.5 for men; the average ages at first marriage were 24 years for women and 27.75 years for men. “

Interesting seeing Jon’s scenes and reference to his “visions.”
I wonder if his wolf dreams will be done “Quantum Leap” style, where we see HIM instead of Ghost, witnessing what Ghost sees, or even astrally accompanying Ghost, perhaps standing beside Ghost.
…or perhaps “American Werewolf in London” style, where we see Ghost’s POV, which was how I always imagined Jon, Bran and Arya’s wolf dreams.

I’m glad that element of the story seems to have made it into the series, including the fact that Jon’s superiors take his warging talent seriously, pretty much from the start. Remember, it was based on nothing but Jon’s wolf dream that Quorin decides to bug out and hightail it back to The Fist in the face of the massive wildling army.

    Ye Olde Wolfe:

Hmm… good (and relevant) discussion. I agree with you re: Ros. I know everybody hates her, blah blah, and we can say it might not have been the best way to serve up a dish of Westeros history and/or character back story while there’s graphic sex shoved in front of our eyes, but her character serves a purpose. And I’m really not as annoyed with her presence as I am with some other important characters’ absence. *coughblackfishcough*

Re: the Reeds. Wow, I’ve never heard of that theory before! certainly interesting! And if GRRM is going that route (and letting D&D know ahead of time), they can pretty much hold off on casting the Reed(s) until it’s time their papa comes into the story… if they ever get casted AT ALL. I still want to see Meera with her frogspear though!

First, it was the 1600′s. Second, were all those thousand wedding certificates for prince and princesses? I doubt it. There was courtship back then and not all marriages were arranged so not every girl was getting married at 16, but for the nobles they typically married well before they were 20. Even in a few cases I saw where royalty did marry after 20, it was only because a prearranged match fell apart due to war, scandal or death of their betrothed.

    elvine,
Thank you, I always thought it was a bit funny how you can tell that GRRM has never had kids by how badly he’s got all of their ages.Tyrion was supposedly 13 in the book when he‘married’ is crofter’s daughter but in the show it’s sensibly 16 (which is still probably too young).I have a 13-year old son and this is just ridiculous–they’re barely talking to girls at that age! No 3-year olds do not talk in full sentences!Yet he’s got girls getting their periods at 11/12, so it’s not like it was some other genetic race back then.

Sorry but you’re 100% wrong on that. You are trying to compare to today’s standards which do not apply. The books are set in a fictional world but they have some basis in terms of behavior with the history of our own world.

Royal and other important families arranged marriages some times as early as the children being infants and they were raised from birth to accept that they would marry a certain person. And just like in the books and the TV show with Sansa they only thing that they wait for is for the girl to have her first period (or as the call it “having your blood”) as it signifies that a girl is capable of bearing children and that means she is fit to be wedded and bedded.

But by today’s standards that’s immoral and illegal but it was common and even expected back then. Most men back then died in their 30′s or 40′s either due to age/health or more likely they died in some battle. That’s if they were lucky to not die from illness as children. They could not wait until everyone was over 18, or even 16 for that matter to start having children or the population would die out.

Take all you expectation as far as age and you can but a third to almost half. Boys squired for Knights in battle at 11 and 12 and were men of their own by 13 and Knighted by 16. Privileged children like Rob Stark would have been learning at his father’s side by age 6 or 7 and his combat training would have probably started as early as 5.

Girls hit puberty around age 12 and were expected to know the responsibilities of a woman by that point. If it was a time of peace they may wait until she was 15 or 16 for her to get married and have children but in a time of war a marriage would have been performed and consummated as soon as she was able to bear children.

    Ye Olde Wolfe,

They might not, but it is a big risk. In the books, Jeyne is present at Riverrun in what I believe is Catelyn’s first ASOS chapter, and teh Greatjon and a lot of other lords are there. I think Tywin and/or Roose and Littlefinger would consider it too dangerous; plus, Jeyne is significantly older than Arya, even moreso on the show, making it more difficult to pass her off. I think the show will just introduce a young serving girl or something in season 3 who is mostly in the background and then turns up as the fake Arya Stark.

That’s true that they were around, but keep in mind almost all Robb’s bannermen from the time of the wedding were either captured or butchered at the Red Wedding, so there aren’t many left who will recognize her as Robb’s former bride.

    Patchy Face,

The point is that people have never been grown up at 13-14, like Martin (and some defenders here) think. I’m trying to argue against the notion that people were much more mature in the old days, and so were ready to raise a family or lead armies in their early teens.

If the average age of marriage in the 17th century was 24 and 27 respectively, I think it’s fair to assume that they were not considered too old to marry at that age. Also it was very uncommon to marry before age 14. Do you think people just stopped maturing early between the 14th and the 17th century?

I’m not arguing that child marriage didn’t exist. What I’m saying is that the age of marriage is not an argument for writing kids that act as adults.

  515. elvine
    Posted February 27, 2012 at 1:28 am | Permalink

    Michael Kehoe,

So people died of old age at 30 or 40? Citation needed, I’d say. And of course you realize that the standards of society, whatever they actually were, can not make a “man in his own right” of a 13-year-old. Biology stands in the way. Have you noticed how small they are?

Also, about the maturity of kids 13-14 (that do act like adults in the books) – I’ll accept that Robb would be better suited to lead an army than the average 14-year-old school boy today. But he still wouldn’t act and think like an adult. And he wouldn’t succeed like he does. Again, biology. Kids at that age hardly have frontal lobes, for crying out loud.

Edited to add: So they most likely died in battle? Quote again, please. Not even soldiers in the Napoleonic wars would most likely die in battle, but from disease.

  516. elvine
    Posted February 27, 2012 at 1:37 am | Permalink

Wait… are people really arguing about the age and maturity of kids in a series that also features FIRE-BREATHING DRAGONS?! I’ve always taken the weird ages as a part of the world that GRRM created. I just figured in the universe that Westeros is set in, people grow and mature more quickly, which also changes the rules of society, ie coming-of-age, being wedded and bedded, etc… This is clearly a fictional world where things are different than the world we live in.

Yeah, that’s true. I’ll just add that it’s still a bit risky for Tywin and Littlefigner to come up with that, so I wouldn’t really buy that they’d choose Jeyne, who’s also too old to pass off as Arya–the Northern lords probably know about how old Arya should be.

Very excited for Tyrion’s interactions with Cersei. They were great in the book and should be excellent onscreen as well. Very much looking forward to the three slaps.Hell, I’m excited for Tyrion’s interactions with everyone in King’s Landing, especially his scenes with Varys and his complete and utter domination of Lancel, where he has him begging on the floor where only a few minutes before Lancel was acting tough.

Also very excited with the prominence of Sandor in these trailers. He was in a few shots in htis one and also at least one shot in the earlier trailer. He kind of got shafted last season with Littlefinger stealing his best, and longest, scene so I expect to see a lot more of him this season.

    Justin James Dixon,

It is a very conveniant argument to say “Oh, it has dragons, it has nothing to do with reality!”, and one may think that is an answer to all the questions that may arise concerning the world of Martin.
In this case, it is simply not true.
If you take accounts of the corresponding medieval era (XII-XIV. century), you will see, that children were raised quite differently then, reaching adulthood way sooner than today.
By the medieval standards, by the age of 14, you were counted as a full adult, grown enough even to be enlisted in the army*! A soldier of such was considered a veteran by the age of 21! So that is pretty different, but also factual. Go see contemporary documents.
So in this case, if Martin’s descriptions may not be completely same as it was, but it is pretty close…

(*cf: in antique Israel, the coming-of-age was at 12…)

  525. elvine
    Posted February 27, 2012 at 5:55 am | Permalink

    Felagund,

But, Christ, no! You can marry off a 6-year-old, and you can send a 14-year-old into battle. I have no objections to that, I’m sure it’s true, it still happens in the world today. But that does not make the 6-year-old nor the 14-year-old much more mature or grown up, and most certainly, even people in the middle ages could tell the difference between a 14-year-old soldier and a fully grown one. The height and the voice would have been dead giveaways.

The problem with Martin is not that the kids go to war or that they marry, but how they behave, and what they achieve. It’s also quite evident that in the later books he has corrected that, the new youngsters that are introduced don’t have this dissonance between age and behaviour.

Did everyone on this board get all their knowledge about earlier centuries from fantasy and adventure novels?

  526. Felagund

    elvine,

It is not the children it is the parenting that made them more mature than their 21st century counterparts, because the parents also knew that their children are considered adults by the age of 14, so they raised them in accordance.
So the children were “forced” to grow up much faster.

  527. Hildegarde

Sorry to further belabour this dead horse, but my point on children’s ages above was entirely biological, not anything to do with what society expects of them or does to them. I just don’t think human evolution has changed our biology much in a few hundred years.

GRRM has the girls about right, with puberty around 12 which is about normal (I think) today. But the boys seem to be done with puberty by 13 and fully grown by 14 or 15 and doing lots of other things that just don’t seem physically plausible (OK so my kids aren’t Mozart I’ll admit but the Starks et al aren’t portrayed as incredibly precocious either). You just wonder why no one pointed this out to Martin in the editing process. Happy with the ages in the show, though.

I also think it’s great that there are 530 comments on this thread now, but my laptop is having trouble getting to the bottom of the page so I think it’s time to stop.

One of my main concerns regarding the tv series is how it will effect George Martins writing for book 6 to conclusion. After finishing a dance with dragons i simply cannot see how the story can be finished in 2 more books, i can see it lasting up to 8-10 books. Considering that series 2 is a combination of book 2 and 3 i assume series 3 will be a combination of book 3 and 4, and if theres a series 4 then it will be books 4 and 5 and so on. George should be free to write his story according to his speed, im worried the whole thing will end up rushed.

Pretty sweet trailer, although I think I liked the one from a month ago better. That’s not how I imagined Stannis sounding. I was thought of his voice as being rougher if that makes sense.

I disagree…I think. I can’t even parse what you are writing. (‘nad’???) It is actually still too blurred to tell what is going on. I’m even more curious now how certain individuals managed to judge it with an even blurrier screen capture.

When I freeze-frame the HD version (at least Youtube 720p), there just isn’t a lot of detail to make out due to lack of lighting and blur. But I *think* I can make out teeth.

And that’s the last I will say on the topic for this trailer.

    elvine:

No, no, no…. I’ll try to explain.

There is NO difference in the children potential between now and the Middle Ages. BUT, the fact that they had no “childhood” like we understand it, and no time to lose by playing and meeting friends, and thinking about lot of “futile for the time” things, they skip directly to the next stage of life. They’re not more mature, but they have instantly the point of view ‘life is not fun, I have duties’. Thus, they NEED to become more mature quicker (they’re not naturally because it’s the Middle Ages). Give them some years, and then, YES, they are as mature as today’s young adults, when they’re still teenagers.

Plus, it’s not because they try (the best they can) that it is a success : Robb not respecting his word to marry a Frey is an obvious example of immaturity (I’ll marry her ’cause I love her, I don’t care if a lose an ally !)

At least some of the shields have a Golden Stag on them, so it’s the Battle of the Blackwater. I can’t see any Kraken.

I wrote a blog post breaking down the trailer shot by shot (all 105 of them!) and attempting a page to screen analysis. Feedback welcomed if anyone fancies a long read. I was probably heavily influenced by some comments here as I read them all before starting so thank you for your indirect contributions.

The trailers for this season have been consistently impressive; every aspect of the show is looking excellent. Perhaps this will introduce many more people to the show who haven’t read the books.

Looked good I thought…Still hope they cgi trees in the north, maybe white ones with faces…and if Jon does see an other..he’s not a frozen naked barbarian like the first season… I Really wanted the armor…

Looks like Mel is giving birth to a shadow..maybe we will see Stannis plant it..be a good adder/guess/ to the books..

Fan of the books so, there’s always a lot I laugh at or don’t like much.. I still remind myself to take the tv adaption as a new story.

I would hate to lose the reeds…even just for the story about the Knight of the white tree. But if they are cut, maybe Rickon will go over the wall with Bran, or maybe Luwin will live and take him, they could just kill him off..doesn’t do anything anyway…

Justin James Dixon: Wait… are people really arguing about the age and maturity of kids in a series that also features FIRE-BREATHING DRAGONS?!

100% agree with you…this is a silly debate but it’s what obsessed fans like us do I guess…

Tinuviel: One of my main concerns regarding the tv series is how it will effect George Martins writing for book 6 to conclusion.

You know I’m wondering the same thing…Mr.Martin introduces a huge new player in DWD and I don’t think it’s going to end in 7 books …

    The Hound beating up Dontos?
That’s an interesting theory. That would explain why it’s just one combatant and why, even in a quick trailer sequence, we see so much of him …getting knocked off the wall and landing, kerplunk, in a courtyard.

Saw this kind of late, and I haven’t had time to go through all the comments. GREAT trailer! So many snippets of great stuff! Loved the voiceovers as well, especially Dany’s. I’ll note a few things below.

I actually Ctrl+F’d “Reeds” on this page, and I’m really happy to see I’m not the only one concerned about their absence. I am hoping they turn up later rather than never, but I’m still sad to see Bran wandering the forest with only Hodor and Osha. I’ve written extensively on this topic in past threads, but the Reeds do serve as an integral component in Bran’s plot and development. Osha does not function in the same way. My only hope is that David Benioff’s interview about moving things around in Seasons 2/3 means there’s some hope for Meera and Jojen in S3.

Still not shot of Jaqen, huh? Or maybe I missed in, in which case I’d be eternally grateful to anyone who points it out. As much as I want to see him, I’m really glad they’re keeping the character under wraps. It’s really building an aura of mystery around him in my mind, which is a refreshing sense of the unknown in a TV show that closely follows a book series I know and love well. And for non-readers, he’ll be even more of an enigma!

I think Robb and Jeyne’s relationship is going to be a lot more hot-and-heavy, Romeo-and-Juliet than in the book. My reading in ACOK is that these two kids kind of fall together in stressful, crazy times and have sex, and then Robb, predominantly out of a sense of honor, marries her. But that clip from the show looks like it’s much more passionate and romantic. Which is perfect, because in the show, Robb is a 17/18-year-old young man, not an inexperienced 15/16-year-old boy. Another smart adaptation from HBO.

Love Dany’s voiceover about her plans for full-grown dragons. I really do hope they keep her empowered this season, since the text doesn’t offer much to do (other than perhaps the most awesome passage from the entire series! YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS). On a related note, I really do hope it’s Doreah who dies in the end and not Irri, if that rumor has any possibility of being true. Nothing against Roxanne McKee, but I loved Amrita Acharia’s portrayal of Irri in Season 1. I loved the chemistry she had with Rakharo. It added another layer of family and community to Dany’s little Dothraki group. It would just suck to lose Amrita from the cast because they make a somewhat-arbitrary switch about which handmaiden will die.

Wow, cool. So I interpret that to mean they are going to include the “king’s men” vs “queen’s men” dynamic… The regular stags should be Stannis’ men, and the heart stags are queen’s men, and the green ones are Renly’s of course.

Sometimes D&D really impress me with their attention to detail. Rock on.

Ugh…I was just over at IMDB and Discerningly Tasty the GoT board’s chief troll is proudly happy that the Blackwater will be a disappointment (he makes this judgment from the trailers)even though he says he wants it to be amazing. He’s threatening to quit the show if the battle is less than stellar. Which too me would be a good thing for the board but he will just bash the author of his favorite books and continue to bash ADWD over and over again. It’s a pity really because some good discussions erupt on that board but then there’s assholes like that guy and people deliberately spoiling the UnSullied who don’t know it’s a book yet. I am so glad we have awesome mods here who don’t give these pathetic fools free reign.

    Just a rant, sorry.
