Be a mistake if the Reeds don’t show up though. They are a lot more important to the series as a whole than Tom Bombadil was to Lord of the Rings.
Everything else looked pretty much dead one.

This was my favourite episodes of TDR so far, and it addressed many of the problems that people had mentioned in previous discussions.
I enjoyed this one quite a bit (and good point about the head– it does look very awkward, as though it may be severed).

Good episode, I enjoyed it. Good pace, short enough, pertinent… concise. There is only so much you can see in a trailer and this covered it very well indeed. Thanks for the work Simone (and everyone else involved).

I think that HBO simply cut the reeds out of the second season and not the story alltogether. Bran will probably meet them some time after escaping from Winterfell That is at least my theory.

The original Game of Thrones theme song was composed by Ramin Djawadi. We use a harder-edged version given to us by the musically gifted Roger Lima of White Noise Lab.

You can find Roger at @Wnlab on Twitter or at his website: http://www.whitenoiselab.com/

Here is the entirety of his version on You Tube!

TDR is defo improving. This is my favourite episode so far.

I know everyone is worried about the Reeds being cut, and that is a legitimate concern, but my biggest fear is in the show changing the motivation behind Robb’s Marriage to Jeyne and Cat’s release of Jamie. The way it happens in the book makes Theon’s betrayal in taking Winterfell and seemingly killing the Stark boys the catalyst that kicks off the events leading to Red Wedding. If they change Robb’s marriage into a straight love story it shifts the blame quite significantly. I’m hoping that will not be the case.

I;m jazzed to hear the good news about Doreah. Only cautiously, though; given the expanded Quartheen storyline, it could be that some other dire fate awaits her there.

FaB, I haven’t seen much about the music for the new season. Is there much in the way of news about that?

    Maester Tcost,

I believe Ramin Djawadi is still onboard doing the music, but we haven’t heard anything official with regard to that. IMDB still lists him as the composer for series 1, and no one else has been mentioned for series 2.

I love this episode, because I missed some of the clips Simone talked about (clips of Davos, Brienne, Stannis pulling out Lightbringer, etc.) Also, I am so used to the TV version of Renly that I sometimes forget that he was such a playful, peach-munching guy who didn’t seem to be taking the whole king thing very seriously. Good catch. Good job all around.

The Reeds are cool, but they really are superfluous (at least so far) – as the cast gets bigger with each season, characters will inevitably get cut or combined. Are we really going to be sad if Nimble Dick doesn’t make it in? I dunno – Bran’s journey past the Wall is fine with just Coldhands and Hodor and doesn’t need the Reeds, and the Wildling girl can help with the Greenseeing. I wonder who’s going with Rickon? I’m more than happy to have the books be the more fleshed out version of the story – it makes sure both mediums remain vital.

    Off-Topic:
We all knew it was going to happen: Game of Thrones Online is in the making… Unfortunately Bigpoint is in charge (as publisher), so I don’t have much hope…
Not much information yet, but here is what I have:

    1. The game will be Free2Play
    2. Artplant is the developer (they are from Norway)
3.The game will be based on the book series and that means also a bit on the TV series I guess. They would be stupid not do go there with all the biz with GoT right now.
    4. The game focuses on a mix of Drama and Actiom (what ever that mean…)
    5. It will run on the Unity Engine (Battlestar Galactica Online) and will of course look impressive ;-)
    6. The game is in development since last years summer and the closed beta should start fall 1212
    7. More will be announced at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco (March 5.-9.)

Here is the link to the info, but it’s all in German, which is why I was typing all the points down to begin with.^^

I am enjoying Simone’s Daily Ravens and am now looking forward to these re-caps after the episodes start airing. The video looks quite good in HD and Simone pleasingly shiny. The production values are fine and the serious second by second approach to breaking down the trailer bodes well for conversation starting in the future.

The Daily Raven’s just keep getting better and better. And hooray for Simone being a fan of the Reeds!

On the MMO: If it’s free-to-play, then I won’t play it. F2P is just an excuse for a company to milk more money from a substandard game via microtransactions than they can get via monthly subscriptions, because they game sucks and no one will pay monthly to play it. Sadly, many of the people who claim to like F2P games because they’re free end up spending more than they would have on a monthly subscription, just trying to keep up with the Joneses. The game publisher makes easy money, the game still sucks; and because it doesn’t have a solid monthly revenue stream and a stable player base, the game is never improved.

Thank you for proving my point about TDR being little better than Comic Con booth babes. It’s not as bad as Aint It Cool News’s infamous Script Girl, but this ingratiating grab for the attention of hormonally challenged adolescent boys is insulting.

    Lycan Witch,

I generally prefer not to reply to TDR reactions here in print (responding subtly in videos is much more fun), but you now have me curious, so I hope you will “man up” (irony) and answer a question.

But let’s roleplay a little first. Because I love a good RP!

Let’s say you run a website dedicated to the successful HBO show Game of Thrones. Let’s say you want to keep pace with other fan-driven websites that have moved into the 21st century by offering video content. Let’s also say that you realize you are not an experienced video host—in fact none of your site writers are—and the person who is pushing hardest for video content (some tard named FaBio) is so inept with a camera that he would probably end up posting up 7 hours of unbroken home video featuring his Miniature Schnauzer whilst making bad attempts at voice-overs in something weirdly reminiscent of “Shaggy” from the Scooby-Doo cartoon.

Let’s then suppose you were approached by Simone Boyce, an experienced video hostess with loads of ASoIaF knowledge; bonus that her work inside the “nerd circles” is pretty damned respectable, having hosted Hobbit In 5 for TheOneRing.net as well as other shows for other sites. Add on top of that the fact that she did, on her own and with zero funding (which happens to be the exact same budget we have) a webseries called “Game of Thrones for Dummies,” aimed at teaching new fans of the series some of the deeper ASoIaF themes.

That’s the scenario. My question to you would be:

What do you tell her to wear?

Because I wouldn’t even know where to start suggesting something in that realm. I’m curious what you might suggest. Muumuu? Burkha?

Clearly you seem to think our “ingratiating grab for the attention of hormonally challenged adolescent boys” is some sort of “grab the sexy girl and throw her onscreen” ploy.

I can’t even begin to say how untrue that is. It’s only slightly akin to the reaction I got from a video hostess friend of mine who wrote me a letter saying how disappointed she was that she was never even “considered” for Simone’s job.

Simone approached us. Simone owns her own camera, video production software, and greescreen. What she does is not a job. It’s something fans do.

Truth: we would have leapt at the chance of having any experienced and willing host or hostess that had Simone’s resources and knowledge of the series. Seriously. That person could have resembled an armadillo dressed in spandex. Got the brains? Got the equipment? Don’t need a paycheck? You’re “hired!”

Luckily for us, that person looked more like Simone.

One last thing to add for the record: Simone is completely clothed at all times. Jesus Christmas, people! It’s like some of you have never seen a push-up bra before. Are we that racy?

    Fire And Blood,

Wow. Who would thought that one of the most polarizing “gates” on this site would not even involve the actual show? As someone who worked in the TV industry for several years I sympathize completely with you, Fury, Winter and co. All one can do is make your best effort everyday to deliver what you think is a great program.
Take pride in what you are doing (and you should be proud IMHO despite one or two things that can only improve with experience) and the confidence that is instilled with you will carry over to your work. There will always be contrarians and outright haters. One cannot avoid that. But I think perseverance on your part will pay out in the long run. I think people just need to adjust and with time they will, and those who dislike it simply won’t watch it.
Sorry to sound like Captain Obvious but I feel that inevitably the Daily Raven will be as commonplace here as a rant on Cersei’s wig.

    Peace.

Wow, I have to say, I really liked this epsiode. This is something I would watch. there were no distracting jump cuts, and she picked apart a new trailer bit by bit with the Gatewatch-ability of an old-timer. Which is what we love to do at this site! She addressed a common discussion point i.e. “Where are the Reeds?”, and that shirt looks pretty close to indigo :)

I think as The Daily Raven goes onward, you guys should start hiding easter eggs (or dragon eggs as they seem to refer to them for GoT fans) in there that would only make sense for people who actually have been to to the WiC website and participated. I guess the point with the “she’s just being sexy and funny about things we already know” is a great suggestion to have more ‘new’ material in TDR. Everyone using this site regularly, will have already known these tidbits your providing.

I do mind the general shallowness and obviousness of the previous 2 TDR’s, though.
But I can totally see how adolescent boys & girls which are new to the genre & series, and dig the “rest in peace, homies” approach, could idolize it.

    Ripley,

Really, can’t people have different expectations of a real live person today vs a fantasy world?
In the real world, women know that if you are well endowed and don’t want people staring at your chest instead of your face while they are listening to you, you don’t wear low-cut tight tops. It’s just a fact. If Simone is happy for people to stare at her chest, that’s entirely her decision. But where I’m from, in the actual real world, cleavage is reserved for evening wear and the beach, so it’s just not ideal from my perspective given this sort of serious lecture format. She looks nice in this vid though.

I did enjoy this one, techniques definitely improving and I’m getting used to Simone’s style. I think there are lots of ways she can take this and run with it.

    Hildegarde said,

“But where I’m from, in the actual real world, cleavage is reserved for evening wear and the beach…”

This may highlight a yawning chasm of difference between some of our readers and others. I’m curious how many of you hold to this? I grew up in Europe, Arizona, and Virginia, and now live in Southern California. I’m in my early 40′s—and consider myself reasonably “old school”—and have never even heard of this reservation.

I’m not mocking, just curious. Is this a widespread belief?

I don’t think so much about evening/non-evening as the choice to go for the bimbo look. It’s like Giada on the cooking shows, there are probably thousands, but she is the only one waiving her tits on screen. It is the first thing you notice and it’s always there.

It says the person doing it thinks she is hotter/better/different than everybody else, and what she uses to present her difference is her tits.

What I don’t care for is the plastic sameness that comes across – she is trying to get ahead in the industry and wants to look the part, but it means she could be hawking phone books for all it matters.

I guess because I consider what Simone does as entertainment – I don’t see that as “real world”.

I am a woman in my early 40′s and don’t think cleavage should be reserved for evening wear and the beach. Simone is an adult and can dress how she likes.

Maybe next episode she can do her report from the beach wearing a bikini – would that be better?

    FicusFan,

My response, I guess, would be an “eye of the beholder” thing. Though…

I could see where if we had a show where a woman in a string bikini was reporting the weather whilst bouncing up and down on her toes…

“Going for the bimbo look.” Really? Are we not maybe stretching things just a little bit here? This just boggles my brain. She’s wearing a tight purple shirt with short sleeves. I’m not seeing a prostitute’s bustier paired with skank pants with “JUICY” written across the ass.

Like who the hell does this look scream “bimbo” to? How did there become such a huge gap in what certain people consider racy and others not?

    What have I become?

And who the hell are you people?

“It says the person doing it thinks she is hotter/better/different than everybody else, and what she uses to present her difference is her tits.”

    Asjkghdkkfhsk—What?

    Get off my site.

    You’re banned.

Just kidding. I’m amused by how much this fascinates me.

She’s wearing a purple shirt that exposes perhaps 1/8th of her cleavage! If her boobs are the first thing that you notice, what does that say about you?

But if so, why are men so ugly?

This discussion has gotten very amusing! When it comes to any type of entertainment people are going to have their opinions about looks, voice, etc. and, apparently, defend their views aggressively!
    ie..
There is a commercial for a product called “Flexseal” here in the midwest (US) and the guy sounds like Elmer Fudd everytime he says the products name (and all other “s” sounds in the commercial). It drives me crazy!

See? I guess with some people, boobs drive them crazy…

Seriously though, I enjoyed this episode. Keep em coming!

Wow, the people criticizing Simone’s wardrobe are absolutely ridiculous. I’m quite shocked, I might say. Chauvinist, sexist folks.

    Hildegarde,

where the hell are you from? Here in Rio, Simone would possibly die because of the heat with the wardrobe you probably have in mind. I’m really glad my “real world” is different than yours.

In the real world, secure, confident women dress how they want.

I’d say that shirt is much closer to indigo than purple, both colors which meet with my UTMOST approval. I wanted to bounce in to this cleavage discussion, since it’s becoming fun. I think the look in the indigo shirt here is fine – there’s not much cleavage at all in this one, and I love that her makeup is matched to the color of the shirt. This would be a perfectly normal look for women out here in my area, the East Coast, day or night.

Actual real world…..real world….that sounds vaguely familiar…heck yeah, I know why, it’s because I live in it too. I think it’s best if we ease off with the generalities.

Dear women believing dressing in a sack from head to toe results in being taken more seriously (or whatever),
you don’t need to hide your body in order to show you’ve got a brain. You can have both. Oh the wonders of simple truths…

Let’s be honest, all the women moaning about somone are just doing so because they are jelous of her great looks (cleavage n all) and any fellas having a moan (not many!!) is because they have probably never been near a woman as stunning as simone, let’s stop discussing what somone looks like but the great TV show coming to our screens. simone, wind these idiots up and either wear a bikini ( oh please) or go all out with some kind of Halloween make up on the next DR. Would be so funny. Great job on DR though, you had some interesting thoughts on the trailer, what about the goings on beyond the wall? I’ll look forward to the next DR and future WiC posts

Good episode, I liked all 3 in their own way and this one brings something I needed (while #1 was mostly a recap of recent news, and #2 mostly a -fun- soapbox) so a bit short, but focused and nice. Keep bringing the variety!
That being said I do miss the censorship raven from #1 :)
I would agree that the MTV effect is not exactly my favorite style but it mostly works here, and that’s how our youtube-society is evolving, can’t really complain too much. Production values are nice especially the sound.

And regarding the hotness/clothes of the hostess… seriously, who cares? This is the internet, you can find boobs anywhere if that’s what you’re looking for. If you want fun news about GoT, you come here. If she looks too good for your taste, focus on the PiP. Now her professionalism and delivery can turn off the authenticity perception a bit, that’s part of the MTV effect, I can see that as a valid concern – but isn’t that better than the alternative?
Hey here’s an idea: hire Harry (Larry?) from OtakuAssemble as a co-host for variety in the segments. How’s that for amateur nerd authenticity?

    Simone Boyce,

Please, please don’t wear a turtleneck…LOL! Besides, thank the heavens you don’t look like the typical nerd…ahem…locked somewhere in some dungeon eating cheesy poofs…and falling appart because due to lack of sunlight…

Don’t pay attention to all these numbnuts picking on you, the fact that you love the show and the books and take your time to do all the stuff on this site is awesome! You’re doing a great job so don’t fret about some of the comments here!

    - Larry and Simone could play “Stump Larry” as an hommage to http://www.castofthrones.com ‘s Mike Dao….
    - Where they are located doesn’t matter much, he doesn’t have any equipment but he could still do a small solo segment in TDR or something, if so inclined. Or really I wouldn’t mind seeing Fabio interacting with simone in front of the camera too (and i have a feeling he wouldn’t mind either). The point was, if people’s problem is too much @SimoneBoyce hotness, (a/ wtf is wrong with them? and b/) it doesn’t hurt adding some diversity to the nerd soup.
    - Finally, that is sad. Is it possible to find those For Dummies episodes somewhere with another title mayhaps?

Personally, I am a little disappointed with Stannis Baratheon so far on the trailers, he doesn’t seem as fierce as in the books. – Think Patrick Stewart would be amazing on this…-

Also, I have a ‘feeling’ that in the show they will kill Stannis at Blackwater and his future role will be reprised by Robb Stark who will not die at the Red Wedding. Although I love the books, I think it will be a more “Hollywood” style of retribution having Robb go with Grey Wind on the Wall to stop the Wildlings and then taking his revenge on the Freys, Boltons and Greyjoys…

Wow, that change would make me incredibly happy. It’s also a good move because if you keep killing EVERYONE like in the freaking books, fans may get turned off and lose their connection. It’s okay to have those shockers like Ned now and then, but when everyone dies, I think viewers might lose their will to watch, not wanting to invest emotionally in something that is too painful and too close to real life.

    Posted March 7, 2012 at 10:33 am | Permalink

I agree purplejilly, there is a big difference between book and TV.

In the book, you have 1.000 pages to develop new characters and get the reader to attach on new interesting people. On the limited 50mins episodes on TV you cannot go into depth to new characters just as easily, it takes a lot of valuable air time just to kill them off at a whim. ‘ see the example of the Reeds being cut totally and be replaced by Osha’.

Also, remember when the Producers said that someone that doesn’t die in the books will be killed this season? ;)
