HBO today released a new video focusing on Game of Thrones production in Iceland. The video offers several glimpses of scenes taking place beyond the Wall in the second season, and has soundbites from cast members including Kit Harington, John Bradley, James Cosmo, Mark Stanley, and Simon Armstrong.
UPDATE: HD version of the video is now available.
Big thanks to Darquemode for initially uploading the video to Youtube! For screencaps of the video, visit our Tumblr!
Fury: Iceland looks incredible and the cast and crew sound very excited, even with the challenges the climate presented. I didn’t think it was possible to be more excited about the second season, but I am now!

Video kinda plays weird for me. It freezes but the audio keeps on going and then the picture jumps to catch up with the audio. Donno if that’s a fault with my computer or what…
Anyway from what I caught, the cast had a ball out there. Nice to hear stuff from John Bradley and Mark Stanley, whom we didn’t really hear from last season.
Oh and QUORIN HALFHAND!! Can’t wait to see his scenes.

oh the Halfhand…I don´t know why I thought Simon Armstrong voice could tear down walls. I love him anyway, is the perfect Halfhand.
Cosmo said he´s in LA?

Jose,
Ha! I noticed that too… He could play an extra some day and no one would be the wiser. He’d fit right in with the Crows!
Bro,
I see it kind of freezes for a split second every 10 or 15 seconds and then keeps going. Odd!
My original file has none of that freezing so it must be on YouTube’s end or an upload issue maybe…. Odd, Hopefully it will sort itself out!

The scenery is breathtaking, and I’d imagine the weather is too lol. Between Croatia and Iceland this might be the most beautiful scenery on television since Lost

Hmm I’m not seeing any video skips.
Grenn is the hotness. I am all about gingerbeard.
But yeah, I’m squeeing like an idiot over the video. I love the Night’s Watch. Seeing James Cosmo laughing and then our Qhorin talking just put me over the top.

Ours is the Fury,
I’m not seeing the skips now either.
I did earlier. Maybe it was a server issue at that exact moment?
Not sure why Knurk only hears left channel.. maybe I need to tighten my capture box’s audio cables? I’ll check later.

Same. It’s still freezing on me. But it’s prob my laptop, it always decides to act stupidly at the most inappropriate times!
Still I love seeing anything about the Night’s Watch. Iceland looks absolutely breathtaking. That shot of the waterfall is one of the most spectatular things I’ve ever seen (on a video).

I love that the best shot of Dolorous Edd is him bundled up in a blanket, looking a bit silly. Of course that would be Edd.

Everything looks gorgeous..and let’s hear it for Halfhand’s costume .

Props to Darquemode and Fury for this. Love it!
The only drawback to having a gunner like Fury on the team is she constantly scoops my slow-writing ass.
Love seeing and hearing John Bradley again.
Oh, and James Cosmo is the bomb.

It certainly looks epic…
I’ve gotta say, though, that in the book I always pictured the far north looking more like Montana (where I live) with forests covering the foothills, steep mountain canyons, and only limited areas of open snowfields at high elevations. If Mormont and the gang are in that iceland terrain, does that mean there are no trees around the Fist? Not what I pictured, but I remain very much open to convincement. My mental North may never be the same….

Everything looks so epic. I’m glad they are using Iceland for the Fist, despite it not matching the book’s version of the tree-surrounded Fist. It is going to look amazing on screen.
Qhorin! He’s not as badass looking as I imagined in my head, but I don’t think they could even hope to approach that level of badassery. Hopefully Armstrong pulls off Qhorin’s quiet confidence.

Gah, I don’t know why but when I was reading I seriously saw Ben Compton as Dolorous Ed. I’m hoping his humor comes across well on the show. I think if Tyrion and Qhorin ever met up Half-man and Halfhand would have made another great buddy comedy. It could be a half-hour show in between seasons. HBO amirite?

I’m still missing the trees and canyons and stuff because that’s how I pictured it in my head but this is gonna be awesome nonetheless. By now I’m open-minded enough to accept those kind of changes and enjoy them :)
Grenn looks totally badass, just like Qhorin does. Kit got punched in the face? Can’t remember that in the books. Hopefully we’ll get some Qhorin – Jon sparring to show off Qhorin’s domination of badassery.
I just can’t wait anymore, damn it!

How did we get so lucky with HBO going all out for the series?! It makes my head spin to think how much the series is going to cost over time (and worth every penny in my book.)
Aww, Sam. His voice and look are so sweet. He’s going to be BEYOND precious when Gilly and the baby come into play.
Armstrong has that weathered don’t f*@k with me look about him. PERFECT! I’m thinking his loss is going to break my heart. As short as his part in the book was, I totally felt his character and mourned his loss.

As much as I loved Season 1, the fact that D & D + the HBO crew have bothered to take the time and expense to capture all this real landscape magic on film for Jon’s story really gives me the idea that Season 2 is going to exceed any expectation I may have had, and that “GOT” in general is going to pull off what I felt two years ago was impossible: a properly filmed adaptation of my beloved books. Simply fantastic!

The environment is quite pretty, but whoever designed the costumes clearly isn’t from a cold climate. No one is wearing hats! Ah well, I’m curious what the temperature is around there, a cursory search says only -5 to -10, so they are probably being British and not really chilly. At least the actors will look genuinely freezing. I dislike most “winter” in films because it looks nothing at all like it should.
XenkanMonkQuote Reply
North of the Wall looks amazing. I kinda imagined the scenery to have more forest in it but there aren’t many of those on a glacier (which looks amazing).
Halfhand is yet another of a great casting choices, he looks exactly like I pictured him in my head. I can’t wait for 1st April!

I think I’m going to prefer the North of the Wall sections more on screen than I did in the book. In fact, after watching this, I’m probably more excited for these scenes than any others.
And damn, the casting is superb. Halfhand – perfectly weathered, leathery features (sorry Mr Armstrong!) and subtly as hard as nails. Brilliant.
RossinnyQuote Reply
Some people have noted the lack of trees. Well, they’re not going to show ALL the footage in these clips. Remember the Cold Winds teaser, and that sweeping overhead shot north of the Wall? Well, I saw a few trees.
Sensible SimonQuote Reply
XenkanMonk,
When they were shooting here back in November and December it was quite cold and windy. It was somewhere around -10 to -15 but up on Svínafellsjökull glacier with the wind and higher altitude it would have been a lot colder.
They also spent a few days at Vík in Mýrdalur, I’m looking forward to see what they will do with those scenes. But there are no trees in that area, only black sands.

Iceland looks, as they say, magical and really appears to be the perfect location for this part of the story. I feel kind of bad for the cast and crew freezing their tails off, but at least they won’t have to fake chattering teeth, shivers, and their puffs of breath. I really can’t wait!
Thanks, HBO, for releasing this video. I’m liking the pacing—one release per week. I wonder what they have in store for us next! Also, I’m glad they’re really keeping spoilers to a minimum. I can’t wait to see the final product.

XenkanMonk,
The temperature here in Iceland rarely goes below -15°C (or maybe -20°C in the middle of the country) on the thermometer, but it’s the windchill that really makes it drop. Seeing as there are no trees and it being really windy most of the time, that can sometimes account for up to 20° difference between what it says on the thermometer and what it actually feels like. Standing on ground that is solid ice also helps with cooling the air considerably, I wouldn’t have wanted to be up there every day for a month in the middle of winter!

I’m guessing that cliff seen at about 0:45 is the actual Fist of the First Men.

Lack of horses make me a sad panda. Also I hope they got better shots showing the vast amount of Night Watch men who marched up north instead of just something like 50 people.
FlourideQuote Reply
Sensible Simon,
True. I imagine the far north to be forested all along the Milkwater valley, but up in the Frostfangs and in the western coastal plain to be as barren as these shots. Perhaps the shots of the Fist, Craster’s Keep, and Mance’s camp will have more forest involved. Then again, some of the shots in this video could very well be fromthe Fist, like the three rangers digging?
Sam DeGreeQuote Reply
Craster’s Keep was shot in Belfast and will be forest-y. The Fist of the First Men was shot in Iceland. This video shows basically what the Fist will look like.
At 0:55, is that Edd, Grenn, and Sam digging up dragonglass?
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Not all of the scenes beyond the wall were filmed in Iceland, and the shots of Crasters Keep had trees in it. I think it’s a safe bet that they will be trekking through the haunted forest at the beginning of the season and eventually emerge on the other side of it when they hit the Fist.

Wow, just incredible images. Such beautiful scenery…all of this effort and work will pay off on when we see everything on screen! The fact that its all so natural with minimal or no CGI effects involved will only add to the realism of the story, as it was mentioned the landscape itself will become a character in “Game Of Thrones”.
It’s great to see all the actors together, some of the new characters as well as the rest of the team. This should be freaking epic!

Iceland is beautiful. North of the Wall will look great. Wonderful to see the actors in costume (though they do need hats!)- and the Halfhand looks perfect to me :)
ShinyteapotQuote Reply
This is quite an eyeopener. I recall speculating a few months back that they might limit the Iceland cast to Qhorin’s party and the wildlings. I think I based this speculation largely on John Bradley West tweeting a lot from London whilst the Iceland shooting was going on – maybe that was just a smokescreen – lol! I can imagine there will be some CGI trees to reduce the barrenness – I think the cold winds trailer showed trees in this landscape which were presumably CGI.
OT: Is the waterfull the same one as was in the Prometheus trailer?
Nick LarterQuote Reply
Nick Larter, I do remember this, and I did think at the time they might keep Mormont, Sam, and co. only in Craster’s Keep, while sending Jon ahead to meet Qhorin or something. Glad to see they’re doing it like it is in the books.
Re: trees — In that 8 minute Iceland TV news video that came out a few months ago, the line producer says that he suggested Iceland and was met with some skepticism because of the lack of trees. But eventually they decided having the amazing scenery was worth sacrificing the trees.
AndrewQuote Reply
Really, really nice vid! And Jon seems to have grown up a bit, his baby-face is less…well baby-ish :)
But I still think that they were saying all sorts of “nice” things about Cersei, Tyrion, Daenerys, Joff etc. I mean while they were filming up north the other bunch was swimming in the Adriatic and drinking “Concubino” cocktails under palm trees and acacias XD
AndrijaQuote Reply
This footage is going to be breathtaking. The way the light was rolling over the snow…it’s going to be beautiful. The scenery is much bleaker than I imagined when reading the book – I always saw the Fist/Frostfangs as much more forested. But this is just gorgeous. It almost doesn’t look real.

The stuff in the Wall and beyond doesn’t get exciting till Book 3 (then become boring again in ADWD), so HBO better add some new stuff to stop the viewers from falling asleep during those scenes in season 2.

I love how some people ignore the majority consensus and feel that their opinion is the only one worth a damn. I am referring to CoK criticism of course. It has more lovers than detractors therefore D & D are going to cater (within the constraints of adaptation of course) to that majority. Not everyone loves The Godfather yet it is still a classic despite the current hatred (re: IMDB). To those who didn’t like Book II (I thought ADWD was the pariah here?).. Deal with it.

That’s easy to explain. TV is a visual medium and there’s so many different characters and so few minutes that you need to make the Viewers get who is who. And that’s much much easier if you can see their faces and hairdoes. So, everyone not wearing hats has more to do with it being on TV than them not thinking ahead. Some other tv shows push that to an extreme and have the actors not wearing helmets during battle, but I do hope they don’t go there and that’s why they have these special helmets (see the Hound).
Did they shoot with horses or is the fist going to be horseless? And that cliff is probably the one Jon is climbing, right? And where did we see Dolorous Edd?
