HBO has just revealed what they are calling “official tease art” for season two of Game of Thrones. Take a look.
Winter Is Coming: I don’t believe this is the official poster. Although, it’s possible that ‘War is coming’ may be the official tagline for season two. At any rate, I feel properly teased. Hoping that the official poster is unveiled soon!

Nice.

Interesting tagline. I guess they’re trying to keep a continuity from Season 1? As for posters – FIVE KINGS (and one queen)!! Please, Five Kings! There is just a wealth of imagery there! I can see them already!
LinaQuote Reply
Gorgeous. I like simplicity, and it is smart to connect it to s1′s Winter is Coming tagline.

Nice, but I’d wish for more details in the poster :)

Do you think we’re getting green fire? The poster looks pretty orange… I dont think it would bother me if they went with more conventional fire for the series.

Good tagline!

This is the teaser, not the official poster of season 2, so there wouldn’t really be any detail in it.

‘There’s a war coming, Ned. I don’t know when. Don’t know who we’ll be fight’in. But it’s coming.’

I think the “War is coming”-slogan would be pretty effective at getting people exited for this next season. Good choice, if they’re gonna go for it, just hope people (non readers) won’t expect a drastic change from a lot of quiet dialogues to full on action series, or anything close.
sjweningsQuote Reply
I might have missed this somewhere, but I noticed it in season 1, also…
…but, do the 3 lines in the “O” have any significance?
AzazelusQuote Reply
i’ m a bit ‘meh’ about the tagline. Still, bring it on.
Tessa LeonieQuote Reply
Same. It sounds like a bad pun.
XenkanMonkQuote Reply
As said before, its a good way to connect this season with the first and foreshadows a bit too…still hoping for a more revealing or meaningful poster btw is it just me or is anyone else thinking a Sandor vs Belwas fight would be epic?
JohnnyBoyQuote Reply
I wish they would work in “Clash” and “Kings” into their S2 marketing. Just to give a nod to the books.
dizzy_34Quote Reply
Really like the simplicity and the tagline “War is Coming” is pretty good, but I agree with Elio from westeros.org, they could have put some green sparkles and flames to tease the wildfire and the battle.
Still, I am waiting and bitting my nails until they release the official poster or a big and juicy trailer!!! :)
RobbetQuote Reply
JohnnyBoy,
I think Belwas woukd kick Sandor’s ass!!! But, yea, it would be a tough and nice fight, an epic one!!
RobbetQuote Reply
Judging by the colour scheme and embossed font, it’s not just war that’s coming, it’s Rome: Total War.
WastrelQuote Reply
Wastrel,
Rome is anepic game and, btw, there is a version (a mod) adapted to Westeros (Westeros Total ). It isn’t as good as Rome, but it is still good! :)
RobbetQuote Reply
On topic: Artwork looks great, but for a slogan, I would have prefered ‘when kings clash, the whole land trembles’.
Off topic: I came up with an idea of something HBO needs to do during the SOS season. Hire Adele to be a singer at Joffrey’s wedding feist and sing ‘the Rains of Castamere’. That would be EPIC.
sunspearQuote Reply
appropriate because unlike winter, war actually comes at the end of this season.
MegQuote Reply
Azazelus,
It could be because there are 3 major plot lines throughout the series. 1) What happens in the 7 kingdoms, 2) What happens on the wall and beyond, And 3) what happens across the narrow sea. That’s all IMO.

Azazelus,

ShinyteapotQuote Reply
meh seconded.
I can’t possibly look forward to s2 any more than I already do, so this kind of stuff is fun (funny?)

Epic fishheadQuote Reply
Agreed, something referring the book’s title would be much appropriate. And sunspear’s sounds perfect!
vianneyQuote Reply
vianney,
To be honest, it isn’t my idea, it’s just the cover description on my edition of the book. I don’t know if it’s different on anyone else’s.
sunspearQuote Reply
I like the tagline and can’t wait to see the official poster…like a couple of posters have already mentioned a nod to ‘A Clash of Kings’ in it would be great too …
Coltaine777Quote Reply
Man, can’t believe we only have a month and a half of waiting! This season really crept up on me, probably because I wasn’t as fanatical about everything as last year.
I would think they will start full blown marketing some time in the next 2-4 weeks, no? Should be a fun March…

I like it. War is coming, so it’s an accurate teaser for the 2nd season, and it’s a line some people will recall from season 1.

I tinted it in Green to see how it looks, here it is if anyone is interested. :)

I’m not really incredibly for or against the new tagline, however I do think it would be a powerful visual to start with “Winter is Coming” on the screen and have the middle letters of “Winter” coalesce into an “a” to say “War is coming.”
KCSQuote Reply
Pretty meh about this too, cheesy and lame. Remember when people were bitching about ‘The night is dark and full of terrors’ and ‘The cold winds are rising’?
KnurkQuote Reply
I thought of both these, but didn’t know if it was meant for anything… I’ve also seen it with only a single line in the “O”… I was just curious if it had been mentioned somewhere and I didn’t know…
AzazelusQuote Reply
(16 minute) WAR IS COMING
Damián ErroQuote Reply
I like it…
But I would also like a slight tweak to the 2nd book title as the season tag line, such as “In 2012, Kings will clash” – or just “Kings will clash”.
LaraQuote Reply
Off topic, but I just read an email from Best Buy that my Blu Ray of Season 1 is ready for pickup. Um…is this real? Anyone else preorder from BB and get this email? And why didn’t I check my email before Best Buy’s closing time, dammit?
zep243Quote Reply
I like this.
I think you still have to refer to winter as coming because it hasn’t arrived yet. By changing it to “war is coming” without referencing winter anymore makes it look like the winter thing is over.
So KCS idea is a great one.

Maybe it should read
“TYRION is coming”…
He does feature more prominently in aCoK after all. ;o)
Mark GeorgeQuote Reply
Lara,
AGREED. you have to make a nod to the source material.
I would make 5 posters with the subtitles “Kings will Clash” :
Balon with Theon, Asha, Aeron, on the prow of a longship
Renly with Brienne, Loras, Margaery, in Renly’s tent
Robb with Roose, Catelyn, Jeyne, outside of the Twins
Stannis with Melisandre, Davos, Sallador in the Dragonstone
Joffrey with Sansa, Cersei, Tyrion on the Iron Throne
But I have no marketing skills and was a book fan first who loved the show and aren’t the target audience (keeping novice fans still interested and attracting new fans)

my mind went straight to the gutter with that one.

zep243,
I did, too, and I got it like half an hour before I had to go to work, so there’s no way to tell. Guess I’ll have to make a trip this weekend, given I’m working odd hours til then, assuming it’s not false info.

zep243,
hmm… I pre-ordered from Best Buy online & got an email a couple of days ago saying they couldn’t process my order due to payment. I used a prepaid debit card and didn’t have enough loaded after the 1st authorization dropped off (I didn’t think they would auth again until ready for shipping as that is how it usually works). I haven’t called yet so not sure what’s up, but now you have me intrigued!

Just checked ord status & it still shows Order Status: 1 item(s) preordered, release date is 03/06/12.

Damryn of DorneQuote Reply
Looking at the Warhammer MMO, this tagline doesn’t really promise success :P
Daniel MoitzQuote Reply
War is Coming is significantly better than anything Clash of Kings-related I’ve heard.
It’s quicker on the tongue and ear, less fantasy-sounding, and plays to whom they are marketing, which is to say, no one on this website.
I honestly fail to see why they would need to made a nod to the source material here. Book readers are watching. Book readers who would get annoyed with not referencing the source material are watching no matter the tagline. We get a quality product that is extremely loyal to the source material. There’s no reason to market more — at least not anymore than reminding you of April 1.
Whereas other people — non-book readers who either did watch season one or more likely, didn’t but heard about it — this is much more bad ass and enticing. Kings will clash sounds awful — the wording is awkward and firmly in fantasyland — both Kings and to a lesser extent “Clash” reminds you that this is fantasy.
War, on the other hand, is something quite a few men will get behind as entertainment and carries no stigma of being particular fantasy. I have to imagine that’s where they are going.
AlanQuote Reply
No, that one should be Stark Raven Mad.
Brought to you by the Society for Empowerment of Bad Puns :)
Boštjan GorencQuote Reply
I think that would be a preety bad idea since it spoils Theon’s betrayal of Robb…
Chris77Quote Reply
This is just a tease, really. A nice reference to Winter is Coming and that’s it. The “official” tagline is coming with the new season poster. As we discussed it with WiC, they’d better reveal it soon – since the tie-in book volume is ready, and someone will soon leak the cover art :)
More posters are surely to follow, like last year’s character ones. Some great ideas and possibilities, only too bad some contain spoilers (like making Balon one of the featured kings). Still, they can release those posters later into the series.
Hear Me RoarQuote Reply
Amen. They could have such a great Five Kings themed poster…maybe with their Hands as well, so HBO get to make the most of advertising their Emmy winning Dinklage for Season 2.
freyar_88Quote Reply
Must have taken HBO a whole day to come up with this one. I guess, it’s still more faster than GRRM to write a sentence.
I got a good tagline for season 2: Everything is meh, except for the stuff happening below the Wall.
Epic lovely timeQuote Reply
Mark,
I like your idea, although I agree with Hear Me Roar, that it would be a little spoilerish.
But if HBO release one after another, beginning with Joffrey and Robb before the season premiere and Renly, Stannis and Balon after premiere, I’d buy it.
I’m not a fan of “War Is Coming ” tagline. I can understand the reference, but I don’t think it should be so obvious. Especially, that, in fact, “War Has Come” already. I’d prefer it this way, but first I’d try to use the “kings” and “clashing” somehow, because they are distinctive for ASoIaF, while “war” is not.
GrzebykKQuote Reply
I just think it’s great. Why? People love war! Especially the knights and dragons ones. It’s going to be so epic!!!
Epic 8 minute bonusQuote Reply
GrzebykK,
We should have a poster for Dany too.
Should the monarchs be alone or with their hands/advisors? Tyrion and Cersei with Joffrey, Jorah with Dany, Catelyn with Robb, Loras with Renly Melisandre and Davos with Stannis, Yara with Balon (Theon is too spoilery, and Balon doesn’t value his opinion anyway).
ShinyteapotQuote Reply
I’m not sure Theon with Balon is spoilery. If anything, it would make the unbook’d folk go ‘Wait a second — what’s Robb’s BFF doing with that human piece of seaweed? Guess I better watch!’
Except with more curse words I guess.
Pink DragonQuote Reply
Well, they’ve pretty much boxed themselves in now, haven’t they?
If you say “War is Coming” on your TV show, then you’re probably committed to actually SHOWING at least one freakin’ battle!
I’m still bummed about the Green Fork so I hope we get to see plenty of large scale fighting this time.
BIG melee, BIG skirmishes between Edmure and Gregor, new BIG battles with Robb (which were off-screen in the book) and, of course, a really, really BIG treatment for Blackwater. Remember that wildfire fire has to be so huge it terrifies the Hound all the way back in the Red Keep! They’re not paying Sean Bean’s movie star bill any more, they’ve got the super new SFX outfit on line, and the series is now officially a hit. Time to splurge for some real bigness!

I’d prefer “Of Kings and Queen”(due to the lack of number it doesn’t spoil anything)… or something along that way. “The Kings Clash” would also be awesome. Anyway, I don’t really mind “War is Coming”… I just want seasonII to start ASAP. :D
PepiQuote Reply
Shinyteapot,
Court makes a king, so advisors should be on posters.
Of course we should have Dany as sixth one (or third, when we want avoid spoilers), along with her children and my personal favorite ser Jorah.
GrzebykKQuote Reply
I’d hope that isn’t the tagline, and I have my doubts it will be, as it sounds like a slow day on memebase more than impressive. I mean it COULD be, but HBO has a pretty good track record, so I’m hoping for something that pops a bit more.
Also re: HUEG battles, we all want them, but unless I missed something Sean Bean’s salary wasn’t THAT big a part of the s1 budget. Main reason for them to get moar now would be the success of the first season.
That being said 16 minutes for the big battle would make me happy enough. Just play up the tension inside the walls and such to extend the feeling of siege-itude and I’m hoping for something neat. (Hey, as long as it’s better than the battle of Philippi we got in Rome. ;D)
