What the heck is… The Daily Raven?

…He won’t be a boy forever. And The Daily Raven is coming.”

–Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark

Of course, we here at Winter Is Coming know the answer to that burning question. But who else could possibly know? What is The Daily Raven?

Settle down, Gatewatch grumpkins! The answer will come soon. It’s Random Stupid Contest Time!

Give us your best guess! One guess per person! What is The Daily Raven? Whoever comes closest to the exact answer wins a 2012 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar—signed by artist John Picacio himself!

(Hurry and give us your best guess now—the month of January has already passed! You only have 11 more months to go with this freaking calendar! Plus the contest ends tomorrow, February 16th, at 10:00 EST.) (EDIT: That’s PM!)

It’s your choice whether or not you want to play it safe and guess vaguely, or take a chance and go with weird precision. “The Daily Raven is The Daily Raven” is a potential winner, assuming no one else comes closer than that, but “The Daily Raven is a vintage 1928 photo of nine naked pipers standing on the back of an albino pygmy elephant” would trump that if it were true. (It’s not.)

Being FaBulous, I will start you off with three hints:

1. The Daily Raven has nothing to do with John Picacio or his art. We’re just giving his exquisite signed calendar away as a prize!
2. The Daily Raven has nothing to do with the Baltimore Ravens football team, or its fan sites. Birds of a different feather!
3. The Daily Raven is not daily.

The answer will be revealed tomorrow. Good luck!

A new, uhh — what was ‘The Maester’s Path’ technically called? I want to say ‘advertising campaign’ but it was more than that. Back in the day we called ‘em ARGs (although ‘Maester’ was softcore compared to the stuff done for AI: Artificial Intelligence and Halo 2, for example).

      Quote  Reply

Ok well let’s give a well thought analysis shall we?

The – Of or portaining to a noun.
Daily – Happening or done everyday.
Raven – A large bird (Corvus corax) having black plumage and a croaking cry.

Now from the hints, we can safely deduce that Daily, does not infact take on the literal meaning of the word. And hence, is most likely the name of some sort of newsletter. Now Daily, can also mean simply during the day, so as vague as that is, we can go with the fact that this is a publication that takes place during the day.

Following this logic, we move on to the raven. Which incidentally can also be a colour (Or if you will, “Ravenly”, which is exactly how we soak up information about this show). Of course, considering the website and It’s viewership, the Raven may very well have something to do with the Three Eyed Crow.

Now moving on from that logic, if we assume that the Three Eyed Crow is the rational way to go, The Daily Raven is a publication, that obviously has something to do with this site, that will take place every three days.

What the topic is, is certainly open to interpretation, but if I had to guess, It’s about Gremlins.

Ravens carry information (“Dark wings, dark words” usually bad – but let’s not bother).

The sentence could stand alone (as the Stark’s motto) but instead we get the “…He won’t be a boy forever” intro. Now, “boy” in that part stands for innocence, ignorance, luck of knowledge due to small age.

I’m gonna take a wild guess here and say that the Daily Raven will be an HBO feature (daily updated) that covers Westeros lore information, anything that was left out of the TV-series or information used for connection in between episodes, spoiler-ish or not, addressed mainly to viewers who haven’t read the books. Or maybe for all viewers if GRRM provides new information/ world-building stuff/ explanations/ flashbacks.

So I would predict it is a newsletter from this website, either every other day, weekly, or bi weekly or even monthly. It features all the Game of Thrones news with some exclusively goodies maybe not found on the site, or just to highlight the latest news.

It could feature interviews, podcasts, pictures, videos or anything that is the highlights of the current GoT news.

It could also be the new advertising campaign from HBO as well.

Seems like it should be part of Campfire’s new marketing strategy for S.2. They know how crazy we are for mysteries and puzzles, and I am guessing The Daily Raven could be something that tweets out clues at a regular pace (even though FaB said it’s not daily). Allthough I would prefer if it were a daily show, like the Daily Show, interviewing people from Westeros.

I think it’s going to be the way that HBO marketing lets us know how to find the Blu-Ray dragoneggs in the S1 DVDs. They’ll randomly send out messages from the “daily ravens” from King’s Landing, (or whatever other Westerosi locations,) that are/contain clues. We then have to use them to find the goodies.

(I haven’t read the other comments, so if someone else said this too, sorry!)
