I really dig the set. It is now probably my favorite piece of media I own. I have the DVD and Blu-ray and the Blu-ray is a superior product. All the special features are fantastic and take a while to view all of them. I especially enjoy the commentaries especially with D & D and separately the one with the kids (the first four minutes is awesome). I really wish they could have had a gag reel to sort of show the cast and crew have a sense of humor–maybe in the future. I think it also would have been cool to have a fan feature interviewing fans of the books in a roundtable type discussion on how they view the adaptation. Maybe their could be a show in the future similar to AMCs Talking Dead that airs online.

I can’t praise this property enough. Five out of Five seven-pointed-stars. I own a ton of HBO box sets including the entire series of The Wire, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood and I can definitely say GoT had the most thought and effort put into.

It is Tuesday! On the east coast anyway. ;)

Figured I’d get this thread up as soon as possible so all the UKers and lucky North Americans who received their set early could discuss it.

I pre-ordered from Amazon weeks ago and it is yet to arrive. In my mind that is wrong so stuff ‘em. I went to the local Morrisons last night and picked the bluray set up for £29.99 which is about 7 quid cheaper than the Amazon price.

The Amazon set is getting sent straight back when it arrives. They usually get these things early so they can ship them out in time for release date. No excuse for not getting them out on time as far as I’m concerned.

I haven’t yet cracked the wrapping and won’t until Saturday March 31st when several friends are coming over for an all day viewing of the entire set. I’ll be making a GoT dinner – pewter ware and wood serving pieces, no forks, only small knives to cut and eat the food, candle light only, mead, wine, and ale.

I bought my DVD one as I don’t have a blu ray player, but my partner does. I went into HMV saw them and got very giddy picked up both and thought to try my luck to see if they could make me a deal. (I don’t have £70, had £55-£60) told them that, humored me but said no as they had been told not to by their Head office, grrr. never mind what I have I am happy with and will buy blu ray for b/f when I get paid but from my mums work place. So far I like the little features on disk one.
Shame we didn’t get the pilot, to see what the actors originally cast were liked and make a comparison. eg Emilia and Tamzin

Strangely enough, Sanity’s price is better than JB Hi Fi, who I’d usually hit up first. but JB is offering an extra bonus features disc, and an exclusive photobook, with promotional stills from season 1. Mine arrived a couple of hours ago from Amazon UK. Just watched the first episode with the commentary from Weiss and Benioff which was pretty good. Professional yet casual and friendly with a nice balance of anecdotes, humour and facts.

I haven’t fully explored the whole BD set yet, but I love the thing on the first disc where Bran reads out various bits of history, like “The Children of the Forest, the First Men and the Andals”, over a basically animated representation of the events described. There’s about 10 of these in total. And Jason Momoa doing a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Jack Sparrow impression.

    Winter Is Coming,

Well I should say that it might be a coincidental sound-alike thing, but on the Drogo introduction short (in the whole list of each actor talking briefly about their character) at one point he says the Dothraki are “[...] loving… well, maybe not *too* loving, aye?” in what sounds like Jack Sparrow’s voice, and does a funny little look at the camera. I also didn’t realise that Drogo is basically a very buff Jack Sparrow until now…

I was going to get one of the special edition ones from Best Buy, but I couldn’t decide between Stark or Targaryen, so I just ended up ordering the regular one from Amazon. I don’t think I’ll get it for about a week, because I ordered late and cheaped out for free shipping. :(

I’m most looking forward to: the animated histories, the commentaries (the one with the kids mostly) and the dragon eggs. I might have missed this in a former article, but do we know anything about what the dragon eggs might include? I guess it’s too much to dream that Brandon/Aerys is in there somewhere?

Itunes has season 1 for 38.99 HD and 28.99 for standard definition. It looks like there are some extras, but it seems to be what’s on the dvd and not blu ray. I’m getting the blu ray version, but based on the comments on itunes people are having problems downloading the episodes today even though it is the stated release date. There are also quite a few negative reviews from people who bought the series prior to today who didn’t realize they were paying for a pre-order as it was not clearly marked as such on itunes.

Maybe I’ll regret not getting the Blue-Ray, but I picked up the DVD box set at Target this morning. It comes with an extra DVD that says it is a “Target Exclusive”. I watched that already, and its a featurette on creating the visual effects – I think it was 15 minutes long or so. I was really wowed by the BlueBolt short video that showed up online with before and after images of many special effects, and this was like that except it also had lots of Gemma Jackson and David and Dan and other folks talking about how they went about the effects shots and lots of pictures of the sets and the mock-ups and the filming of the special effects scenes. Every shot reminds me what an awesome job they’re doing on the series, and gets me more excited for Season 2. I’m not saying the Target featurette CD is as cool as the Blu-Ray features, but this feature is a pretty decent consolation prize.

Game of Thrones – Season 1 (Includes ‘Creating The Visuals’ Bonus Disc – Amazon.co.uk Exclusive) This is now listed as SOLD OUT! After one day that must be some kind of record for a box set. Amazing. The bonus disc edition will probably end up being a collectors item as I guess they won’t be reprinting – just stocking the standard Blu set that all the shops have.

I pre-ordered from a local Best Buy (East Hanover, NJ). This was a good decision as they were completely sold out at around noon est. Out of curiousity I stopped by the target down the road and they were sold out of Blu-Ray but still had two of the DVD sets. Crazy.

I had Amazon preordered for months (as soon as it was available for preorder) and yesterday on a whim canceled and ordered the Targ cover from Best Buy (hard to choose but I’m a sucker for dragons). It shipped and comes on Thursday! I’m so excited! Will need people to direct me to easter/dragon eggs, though. I’m horrible at finding those.

Mine arrived yesterday, on the 5th, from Amazon for $34.99 – a lot less than I had preordered it at months ago.I haven’t yet cracked the wrapping and won’t until Saturday March 31st when several friends are coming over for an all day viewing of the entire set. I’ll be making a GoT dinner – pewter ware and wood serving pieces, no forks, only small knives to cut and eat the food, candle light only, mead, wine, and ale.

That sounds brilliant, can I come??

This is exactly what I did – I saw Amazon.ca was delivering next week, so I canceled, went to Walmart this morning at opening time and grabbed one of their dozen or so copies. By the time I left the section, half of the copies had been grabbed.

And judging by others’ comments, I’m glad I did it this morning instead of waiting for lunch as I originally planned.

Hi guys, I’m writing this to see if any of the fellow americans in the forum can help me :)

I want to know if the version u get from amazon .com is region free or not, and if it has the same dubbing options as the european one. I wanted to buy one for myself and one for a friend, but whe I went to check out a message appeared saying that I was buying a region 1 product that was being shipped to an incompatible region.

On amazon.com.uk it clearly states that is region free, whereas on amazon.com it doesn’t, although all the previous research I did on another forums said that was also region free (planetaxel for example says so) so I am a bit confused about that message.

If anyone can help I’ll be eternally grateful :)

    Pau Soriano,

What region are you looking for? I ordered the Blu-Ray from Amazon and while I didn’t get it yet, I looked at the product description (toward the bottom) on the Amazon website and it says Region 1 – US/Canada only. I think this is generally the case for DVDs sold in the States. When you click the link that says “Learn More about DVD formats,” Amazon suggests that if you’re looking for other regions to try their international sites.

If you’re looking for Region 2/Europe, maybe you could try amazon.co.uk, amazon.es or amazon.fr? Good luck!

I can’t 100% confirm but 99% sure the bluray is regionfree. All HBO shows (except Deadwood) are, and the US and UK bluray have the exact same language-options on Game of Thrones. There is also a blu-ray review that claims the disc are regionfree.

    Brian:
Now I drop by the local Walmart and see that theirs comes with a Lannister mini journal, essentially a small book.

I bought the one with the Lannister Journal. It’s just a simple note book… wouldn’t go out of my way to own it. I simply got it at Wal-mart cause a) I didn’t want to wait to have it shipped by an online retailer, and b) I figured they’d have the cheapest non-online price (which I believe they did). Having said that, I would have much preferred a Targaryen cover over the note book.

As an aside, seems pretty much every retailer has some “extra” to try and entice you to buy GoT from them. Reminds me of blockbuster game retailing… “buy here and unlock this bad ass gun early”. This is the type of marketing stuff that’s usually reserved for “Blockbuster” titles. I think this just speaks to how big GoT has become (and will become). Does anyone know of any other shows (HBO or otherwise) where there was such competition between retailers? Not saying GoT is the only example, but it’s the only example I can recall.

Lina, Knurk, thanks for your answers :)

Besides being region free I’m also interested on the dubbed options. I have no problem with the language, but for my friend I need one that has the spanish sound.

I can get a copy here but is around 50e, while 35$ converts to 26e. So is around half price. If I get a couple of books more I’ve been waiting to get (Robin Hobb, gogogo! :-) even with shipping included is like 30e, a pretty substantial discount (times two, as I get 2 copies)

Another option is amazon.uk, but the exchange rate of the euro with the pound is not as good as with the dollar, so even with shipment free is around 39e. Is nevertheless a good discount too, and much faster shipment, so I’m tempted to go that way.

I’m not sure if a lot of people know this, I certainly didn’t, but the Stark/Targ images from the best buy special edition are not part of the actual dvd box. It’s just a cover that you remove. The image on the actual DVD is Sean Bean.

The Histories & Lore features are incredible. I can’t even begin to describe how detailed and well done they are. I particularly enjoyed how they were each told from a character’s point of view. Robert and Visery’s biased tales were my favorites.

    Pau Soriano,
I hear you about the exchange rate (sucks for us Americans). The page for the one I ordered says it includes Spanish “language” (as opposed to subtitles), but I can’t say for sure until I have the product. It’s supposed to be delivered the 8th, and if no one else answers your question before then, I’ll gladly check to make sure it has Spanish dubbing and I’ll see if I can figure out if it’s region-free.

  103. Knurk

    Pau Soriano,

yes it has spanish dubs. But you have to watch out for import-duties. I don’t know if you ever imported something before, but most of the time when you order something from outside your country (or outside the EU for that matter) you’ll have to pay importduties and customtaxes and whatnot when it’s delivered to you. So you can think you have a good deal but then the postman comes by and says you owe him another 30 euros for all those taxes.

you’re right that DVD’s are almost always regionlocked. Blu-rays however aren’t always regionlocked, and all Warner Brother blurays are regionfree (unless there is a european/asian/african/australian/antartican distributor who has the rights in their continent and want Warner to lock their disc, this doesn’t happen often though).

I got the Swedish version today. A piece of shit. The Swedish version has a regular keep-case and a slipcover. Thats it. Dont know whats inside it, didn’t open the plastic since I will be returning it as soon as possible! The publisher here wanted to save a few bucks in saving on the expenses but at the same time keep the price at about 38 pounds, which is the same or in some cases more expensive then the proper version that has bean released in the UK and US. I have now ordered the UK version.

Unfortunately I will most likely have to wait until next week before getting it. Sucks! Robbing the fans of the awesome version the HBO team has put hard work and heart in making. Shame on them! So be warned all fans in Sweden! Unless you want a cheap crappy version, order it from abroad.

it may be strange for you but for a lot of people the packaging does matter. Is it digistack or digipack? Does it have the slipcover or not (if you look on ebay there are being slipcovers sold for prices higher than the blurays itself)? If I were lars I would be returning it too, why settle for inferior packing if you can get the good one from Amazon for the same price?

    Lars,

Have a look at the box on the top of the page and at previous pictures of all the content and design of the US version. Then picture the Swedish version, a regular blue case with a regular cover. So no, I’m not joking. I’m a fan of the show and I was looking forward to the design that we have seen for months. The US and UK version were made with the design they have for a reason, for people like me who appreciate a good looking set. If you don’t like it or don’t care for it, that’s fine. But don’t act like a jerk and a smartass about it.

Then again, there is no point in explaining something to someone who just doesn’t understand. You either get it or you don’t.

I didn’t pre-order mine…and thank the heavens for that, all I had to do was just walk in the store and buy it! I stuck with the DVD set, I’m not really interested in Blue-ray, so the DVD is fine for me. I bought it at Future Shop (a store pretty much like Best Buy…oh yeah and we do have Best Buy, HMV and Wall-Mart in Canada too).

It was $39.99 (Canadian, but since the Canadian and US dollar are at parity the prices are pretty much the same as in US dollars), plus tax (yep in Canada some provinces do not include the taxes PST +GST or the HST, PST is Provincial Sales Tax, GST is Government Sales Tax (federal portion), HST is harmonized sales tax combining the two) the final price was around $45 dollars, which is not bad at all, when I think how much money I spend years ago for the “ROME” DVD sets. I am not sure if this is just a special one day only promo price, if it will go up tomorrow or if it will stay the same. Good news was that at the store I went to (though quite isolated), it looked like quite a few sets had been sold, I got mine around 12pm local time, so the store had only been open for two hours. There were two other guys in front of me at the check out line one with a GoT DVD set, the other with the Blue-ray.

At Future Shop they had the standard box cover, as well as (they said exclusively) the Targaryen dragon house sigil box cover, which was available for the DVD set only, and the Stark direwolf house sigil box cover, which was available only for the Blu-ray set. That sucks. Both the colectible/special sets had an extra sleeve on them with the title of the show, the French version too, this one could be removed but seemed quite unecessary (if you have the old “Band Of Brothers” DVD set you know what I’m talking about).

As for the technical and visual aspects Winter and others on this site have already done a thorough job describing it.

My first copy of the DVD set, was damaged, which to my dismay I only discovered after I got home and opened it. Some of the plastic DVD cases inside were unglued, Jon Snow’s face was all scratched and ripped and some of the DVD plastic cases were cracked. So I had to go back to the store and replace the set…loosing more time and money on the fucking bus…The second set was good and I opened it in the store (I suggest you do the same just to be sure). Still two of the plastic DVD holders/cases got unglued again when I got home, so I just proceeded to “re-glue” them myself (I just pressed down on the plastic and then they stuck…for now anyways).

I got to say that Future Shop has a shitty record when it comes to the way they handle their DVD’ s and Blue-ray’s…It is not the first time I had this happen, I had to exchange 3 DVD boxes for “Kingdom Of Heaven” (Director’s Cut) a few years ago. So you might be best served to go to Best Buy, HMV, Zellers or Wall-mart.

As for the DVD box set itself, it is definitely one of the best I own, at the very least the best I have bought since the LOTR extended DVD’s, “ROME” and the aforementioned “Kingdom Of Heaven” Director’s Cut.

Love the design, the presentation, the episode guide/Houses index/map of Westeros booklet etc. The sigils of the different houses on the inside of the box set are cool as are the large pics of some of the main characters.

The special features are spread out on each of the five discs, there is no bonus disc for which I’m grateful, I like better that way, watch a special feature on each disc… rather than have a sixth disc. Personally, I like the standard design, and stuck with buying that one, though the collectible/special covers were good too…but not enough to change my mind

Though I can’t believe I’m going to say this, I wish HBO stuck to a simpler design…usually the fancier the box, the more opportunities for it to get damaged, and when it does…it can’t be repaired or pieces of it replaced…either you’re stuck with it or have to buy a new one…personally I think they should have stuck to the way Showtime or FX do their DVD’s. A nice cover, with individual slim flexible DVD cases holding the discs inside (sometimes one or two per case). Those slim DVD cases can be replaced, as they are available in pretty much any store, like Stapples/Office Depot and the like.

Proof is in the pudding as they say, almost ALL the HBO DVD sets have been re-designed, “Carnivale”, “OZ”, “Deadwood”, “ROME” and “The Wire” have all been changed. I own the original sets and now when I go to the store the new ones have the same graphics but different designs. Hell with “The Wire” they changed the design while they were putting out the DVD sets…Seasons 1-3 look different from Seasons 4-5.

Memo to HBO…sometimes simpler is better.

However, having said all that, I’m glad I finally have the series to enjoy, I’m sure my family will soon deprive me of it as they’ll be clamoring to watch it, so I will probably have to buy an extra one.

Mind you, I don’t know what the story is like in the US, UK or wherever, these comments are mine alone, based on one store in Canada…To me, the show itself is the most important and on that front HBO has a clear winner on its hands!

So, just because I sound like a grumpy old fuck, DO NOT be discouraged from buying either the DVD or Blue-ray sets. If you do…you are going to miss a helluva time and bar none one of the best TV series (one puts most movies I’ve seen years past…to shame!) I have had the pleasure to view!

Because the majority of sales typically come in the first week (True Blood S3 made nearly 2/3 of its total 2011 sales in week 1), we should have a good idea of how it will perform very soon.

Lex: It even came with an Ice letter opener!

Nice one Lex. That is the best freebie I have heard of yet….:) I picked up a Stark cover DVD set yesterday from HMV, all I got was a free episode of Boardwalk Empire.
I am over half way through GoT already and I must say I am pleased with the quality and content of the DVD set.
The only thing I will miss is the animated histories from the blueray set, but hopefully they will turn up on youtube before long.
Speaking of the histories, can anyone who has seen them all comment on the content of the Roberts rebellion history? I am really curious about the ToJ, Lyanna, blue rose etc.

    Knurk,

Kind of, but without the book and the slipcase was a regular thin one that you slip on and off at the top and bottom. So the Swedish one is still in the “lead” of being the crappiest one.

Nikst – Oh I get it. I used to collect DVDs, and special editions with fancy packaging. But guess what? They are all collecting dust now. And when I do watch them, I care more what is in the package that how the package looks.

Nowadays I rarely buy films on physical media. And when I do, picture quality and extras matter far more than the packaging.

I merely found your statement of “A piece of shit” and “I don’t know whats inside it” to be somewhat… exaggerated.

But hey, do whatever you want. If you want the better packing, you should get it.

    Posted March 6, 2012 at 6:54 pm | Permalink

    Lars,

My “statement” as you put it, merely meant that I didnt open it because I was going to return it. But from the fact that it was merely a regular keepcase I guessed that it couldn’t have anything other then a little booklet inside. And I checked online and I was right. Thats all there was. No pictures on the inside, no nothing. The US and UK versions were designed with care and I like that. So yes I will get one of those.

Sure if you just got bored of them and don’t have them on display then there isnt any reason for you to get them. But for me there is, if I come to the day when I, like you, get bored with them then, oh well. For now I really enjoy them, so I will collect them. And its not like I collect big sets of all movies and shows. Just the ones that I really like.

I don’t really understand why people buy online most of the time. I can understand if you have to because it’s not out in your country yet, or it’s not being released until much later where you are, but if you have the option of just going to your local electronics store and purchasing it the day it comes out… why bother with online shipping unless you get a really cool pre-order bonus with it?

It took me 10 minutes of driving time altogether to and from my house to grab the blu ray this morning. No effort whatsoever.

A fellow workmate gets his shoes from amazon.com and never got any import tax either, ’till a couple weeks ago, when he was charged like 10e extra. I think they just check a small % of items , at least here is Spain, so if u make a lot of orders overall its still worth it. Two Feathers,

All of the histories are done as house histories – so you have them from a specific house pov – Robert does the Baretheon ones, Maester Luwin the Stark ones, Viserys the Targaryen ones, Tywin the Lannister ones. Since none of them knew ALL the background to TOJ their stories of Roberts Rebellion all have a somewhat different slant to them. That part is more from Roberts pov than the others….

They are really enjoyable – and the histories are for more than just the rebellion – they go all the way back to ‘the King that kneeled’ and beyond. Lots of fun. It will give a lot of the non readers more background to the stories.

During the four different narrations of the Sack of King’s Landing at least a couple of them (Robert, Luwin) mention Ned “going south” to finish off the war, and that he returns after Lyanna’s death, but they don’t mention the ToJ. Still very cool, tho.

    NickS,

Still haven’t found any, but I think you have to watch the episodes with the In-Episode Guide on and at some point the History will start blinking (with an egg, perhaps?) and you’ll have to click on it.

    Violentos,

Because Amazon can under-sell things, and has the best prices. Amazon is the best place to buy absolutely anything, and if you have Amazon Prime (which is absolutely worth it) you get free two day shipping in addition to the lower prices you are getting.

i.e.: Amazon has many guitars that would cost upwards of $1000 in a store for a few hundred. Blu-rays are always, ALWAYS cheaper on Amazon as well.

    sjwenings,

I don’t doubt this at all.

True Blood the series has mass market appeal, but the kind of people most likely to buy the GoT Blu-ray set are readers of the series. And compared to GRRM’s sales figures, Charlaine Harris is a second stringer;. she’s nowhere near GRRM’s sales.

Moreover, True Blood Season 4 was an iffy season. So it is entirely possible that the “collection mindset among SoIaF fans could push GoT above True Blood set sales, even if the audience for live viewing is lower.

    Jon,

I agree with everything you said, Amazon is fantastic, but I’d just add that Prime isn’t worth it in the UK. If I understand correctly, on Amazon US you have a minimum order to qualify for free shipping, right? In the UK you don’t, you can buy something that costs £3 and if it’s fulfilled by Amazon, it’ll be free delivery. This may vary if a person live in the countryside, but the free shipping for Amazon tends to arrive in 2-3 days in the UK anyway, so you already have free and fast shipping. There’s no real reason to use the paid shipping unless you forgot to buy a birthday present for someone and it’s in a couple of days. But yes, for an American I can see it being very worthwhile to be a Prime member.

I bought my DVD a couple of days ago (from HMV for the Stark packaging) and very pleased with it so far. The only issues I have are:

    a) what’s up with unavailability of the Targ packaging in the UK?

    and

    b) what’s up with the huge variation in price between shops? On Amazon the DVD price is £25.99, but the HBO online UK store is selling it for £40! That’s £8 more than the Blu-ray costs on Amazon! Surely the same internet-savvy shoppers who are able to find the HBO store are likely to make price-comparisons between online retailers…

Disc 2 – Rory McCann (Sansa 2/ Little bird)

Here’s my tale of woe. You’d think GRRM was writing my life yesterday.
I had ordered the blu-ray from Amazon, and for some reason thought it was going to be arriving yesterday. So I was planning on watching it when I got home from work.
Tues. Morning – off to my 8AM Dr’s appt, then heading to work afterwards.
8:30AM – out of the appt., get a call from a co-worker that our power is out, and so we are officially off for the day!
8:31AM – Did a little happy dance in the parking lot of the dr’s office, thinking “Yay, I can go home and track my GoT box set, and then start watching it early! I knew the first thing I was going to watch, Ep. Six commentary, to hear my fav, Harry Lloyd talk.
9:00AM – Back at the house, hubby is going to go off for a new PT session for his feet, asked me to go with him. Thought he was just getting steroid patches applied, so I agreed. Get to the PT place and find out instead they are going to exercise and stretch him for an hour, THEN do an ultrasound treatment, THEN apply the patches. I sit down to read and wait.
9:15AM – call from daughter’s school. She is in the health room and her stomach hurts. Leave hubby with the PT torture women and go off and pick up daughter from school. Daughter is very pale and says her stomach really hurts. Take daughter home.
9:30AM – With daughter home and resting, check Amazon. See message that set will be SHIPPED March 12th and will ARRIVE March 18th-26th! WTF?? Turns out my prime membership had expired and I missed it somehow. Cancel order on Amazon and plan to head off to Best Buy to get it. Call Best Buy, they are out of stock. Call Walmart, they have it, for $44, but I decide it’s worth it.
10:15AM – Put sick daughter back in truck and go over to pick up hubby from PT.
10:45AM – Back home, leave hubby in charge of daughter, head over to Walmart to buy GoT bluray, and pick up crackers, jello and soda for sick daughter. Joy at the unexpected day off ebbing somewhat.
11:30AM – Back home, daughter is crying because her stomach hurts so much, and the pain is constant. Give her some soda to drink, put her back in bed, cue up Ep. Six disc of the Blu-Ray, and prepare (somewhat uneasily) to listen to the commentary. Daughter comes out of room, and wants to sit on the couch. She sits on the couch and promptly doubles over in pain, crying. I take her back to her bedroom again, and lay down with her to see if she’ll feel better. Instead, the pain gets worse.
12:00PM – We decided to head to the ER since she has been having such severe and unrelenting pain for almost four hours, but with no fever or vomiting or anything else that goes along with a normal virus.
12:30PM – We get to the ER and it’s not too busy. After about two hours at the ER, she finally throws up, and it goes EVERYWHERE. And its a lot. After that her stomach stops hurting so much, and she falls asleep from exhaustion on the ER bed. After some tests they decide it was either some bad food, or a virus, and since the stomach pain lessened, they ruled out the serious things like gallbladder, appendix, bowel obstruction, etc. they decide we can go back home. I do a very subdued happy shuffle.
7:00PM – We finally leave the ER. Joy at the unexpected day off on GoT release day has totally gone. We go drop off her prescription for anti nausea medicine, then go home.
8:00PM – After I give her a bath, hubby watches her and I go back out and pick up the anti nausea med.
8:45 – Read daughter a bedtime story, then since she is not sleepy, watch an episode or two of Futurama, because that makes her laugh and watching Dany eat a horse heart, even if I tell her it’s made of gummy bears, is just going to induce more vomiting for her at this point. Not to mention the stress of the golden crown scene. It’s all too much for an 8 year old even when she hasn’t spent the day in the ER.
9:30 – Daughter finally falls asleep, and since I have to get up for work at 4AM, and am exhausted from a day in the ER with a crying child, I decide to go to sleep too. I have lost the Game for today.
    Let’s hope Wednesday goes better!!

My Blu-rays arrived 4 hours later than when UPS usually comes to my door, so I was a WRECK waiting around and checking the package tracking obsessively. Finally they came!!!

    WOW!

Even after watching the “religion of the seven” clip WiC posted a while back, I was not prepared for how absolutely wonderful the animated history/lore clips are! I love the fact that we see some stories (Field of Fire, Sack of King’s Landing, etc) from different perspectives. Amazing… Even the “legacy” videos for the different houses have different styles, like the Stark one was grim and shadowy, the Lannister one was done in “stained glasses,” the Baratheon one was done in that medieval artwork style, etc. Even in my wildest dreams, I didn’t think HBO would spend all that effort for us fans. Seriously impressed!

Of course, the video and audio are aces; that goes without saying. I’ve only seen the first 2 eps and some extras so far because it was so late, so it continues tonight! This is going to take a lot longer than I originally thought! :D

Also another thing – when my daughter was home sick yesterday, before we went to the ER, we were watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban. And there’s one scene in the snow, where one of Draco’s friends, an unnamed Slytherin character, is getting pushed around and scared by Harry in his invisibility cloak. And that scared face, against the white snow, with lots of trees and fake snow behind him, looked way too familiar. I looked closer, and then googled to make sure, and sure enough, it was a young Bronson Webb, the same actor who gets his head chopped off by Ned in the pilot. Funny that he’s done two dramatic scenes in the woods with fake snow. I wish I had any sort of skill in video editing, I’d put those two clips side by side somehow..

Well I haven’t even watched the series yet! I spent half the night watching the histories and lore of Westeros. So damn well done! Judging from everyone else’s ecstatic responses I really don’t have much to add but the same hyperbole with four points I would like to make:

    1. Even after reading the novels a dozen times over, it wasn’t until watching these histories that I learned that Aegon and his Sisters were sublime badasses. Great visuals.

    2. Sans the hairs on his head, Charles Dance is the best Tywin Lannister we ever could have got. Listening to his perspective of the sack of King’s Landing was pure geek joy. You can tell Dance loves the role he has been given. I heard that he was a ASOIAF fan before he was cast? Does anybody know?

    3. Until I heard his righteous, angry, impassioned and arrogant depiction of his character’s family history, I had fully appreciated the greatness and depth Harry Lloyd brought to an initially hated character. What a boon! And what a loss! His narration alone is worth the 40 + Canadian I spent on this box set. When I rewatch the series I am going to pay particular attention to Lloyd’s performance and his depiction of Viserys.

    4. No ToJ? Hmmm could the absence of ToJ in the histories imply that HBO wants to keep the events surrounding that particular part of Robert’s Rebellion hush hush? Could this have something to do with the rumoured Ned Stark flashbacks in Season 2?

    purplejilly,

I’ll add to your observation and bring up Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven the Director’s cut in particular. Webb plays the apprentice blacksmith to Orlando Bloom’s Balian…and there is drama…and both real and fake snow.

Don’t tease me! I was wondering about that too, but wasn’t sure if HBO just missed it or if they didn’t want to spoil the viewers who haven’t read the book and/or spent all their spare time on asoiaf fansites like us… >_>

Agree with you about Harry Llyod! Out of all the S1 deaths, i’m going to miss him the most! yes, even more than Sean Bean, blasphemy, i know…

Thanks for the replies folks. I didn`t think HBO would mention the ToJ or the relationship between Rhaegar and Lyanna . Maybe these things will be mentioned on screen in the coming seasons. And maybe not?
I love the whole Lyanna story arc, and all the mystery and intrigue that goes with it.Will her story have to be told as it holds the key to the end game? Only George and D+D have that answer.

Harry Lloyd was on a GREAT 2-episode arc of Doctor Who in 2007, that’s where i knew him so i realized right away when i saw Viserys on GoT. The 2 episodes are called “Human Nature” and “Family of Blood” and are generally considered one of the top 5 storylines in new Who. Harry was amazing in that! (and scary!)

Apparently he was also on the BBC’s Robin Hood series, but I never made it past 3 episodes of that show…

I started watching the extra disc that came with it, but it’s GRRM talking about the histories – do I just have to keep going on that disc and it turns animated, eventually?

    Two Feathers,

They do repeatedly mention that the rebellion indirectly began due to Rhaegar abducting Lyanna, which lead to Brandon riding to KL, his & Rickard’s murder, & Ned/Robert/Jon Arryn raising their banners. Its all consistent with the books, but w/o any specific mention of ToJ/R+L=J etc (which makes sense given that the Stark perspective is from Luwin, not Ned).

In fact, they do well to clear up one of the few book v. show “controversies” from S1.
When Tyrion & Jon are having their campfire chat on the way to the Wall:

“My father was Hand of the King for twenty years.”

“Until your brother killed that king.”

“Until my brother killed that king.”

Implying that Tywin was the Hand when Aerys was killed, which would’ve been a substantial change from the books. However, the histories make clear that Tywin renounced the Handship after 20 years following Aerys’s refusal of Tywin’ s offer to marry Cersei to Rhaegar. Again, just as in the books.

    TheBull,

Thanks, ser! Tales of your glory will live in song forever!

edit:Ahh, and I finally figured it out! Its not the In-Episode Guide. Hit the pop-up menu during the scene and click on features. Scroll down and you’ll see a dragon’s egg. Clicky for San/San glory!

    “I’m not a cripple.”

“Then I’m not a dwarf. My father will rejoice to hear it.”

    “You look cold, Tarly.”

    ” ’tis a bit nippy.”

David the Grey: Mystery Donut, Same here – not even been shipped yet. :( Ah well, they better charge me the lower price, because it was much higher when I pre-ordered back in 2011. Why bother pre-ordering then (except to help out sales predictions)?

Same here, I complained to Amazon about it and they basically told me that in effect if you go with the free shipping you go to the back of the line for having your item mailed out: “we fulfill your order in a more cost-efficient way, While it might take some extra time to pack and ship your order, you’ll still receive it within the estimated delivery time frame.”

My complaint was that it should have been shipped on release date regardless of shipping method since they had days to get around to packing it. I told them I would not be ordering new releases from them in the future. In an attempt to placate me they have given me a $10 credit for future orders. The person also said they tried to update the order to speed up the shipping but that they couldn’t because it was already in the shipping process. That was the same reason I got when the automated system would not let me cancel the order (it was already in the shipping process).

Weird that there is only one episode on disc 3? I have the blu-rays, but I can only assume it is the same for the DVD’s…

And I am sad there are no deleted scenes. I know that had been the popular belief, but I was at least hoping for a scene in the feast tent after the journey. In the making-of promos we saw before season 1, they spent a lot of time looking at the set for that scene, but when it didn’t appear on screen, I was sad. Got my Blu-Rays yesterday.

Haven’t really gotten a chance to dig into the features, but I have to voice my disappointment in two areas:

First, they have ALL the features for the entire set available to choose on every disk, but there’s NO indication as to which feature is on which disk? Really?

Second, for the wealth of concept and production art, costume photos, 3d models and miniatures and whatnot that must exist, I really wish they had put some of that in there to view (similar to what the LotR Extended Editions did). That one’s just disappointing. :\

    David,

I agree on both counts and will add a third minor picked nit…
The menu system is clumsy and redundant. Although I guess that relates to the features being lsited on each disk!

I can see why a lot of the features are listed on each disk since the In Episode Guide is on eahc disk they need most/all of The Complete Guide to Westeros on each disc…. maybe.

If you are an HBO subscriber, you can access HBO GO and go the the reliquary and see all of the props you mention. All the weapons, armor, jewels, artifacts and custome etc.. AWESOME stuff all in 3d viewing mode too!

In regards to your second point, as a lover of concept art, I agree with you. Maybe something they can release in book form later on down the road?

Gotta say, I’m pretty annoyed with the bonus features being on each disc. It’s confusing, I can’t remember what’s where. And so far (up to disc 3) I’ve seen nothing but character profiles and a lot of written text on the various Houses and Lands. Pretty boring, to be honest, but I guess it’s my fault for buying the DVDs and not buying the Blu-rays. Not a huge fan of the menu layouts either, tbh. LOVE the packaging though, absolutely love it.

Mostly, I’m just enjoying re-watching the episodes. Hope the later bonus features (night’s watch, making got, book-to-script-) are more exciting than what I’ve seen so far.

    Lex,

I have the Blu-Ray set, but have the same feeling about the menus….
I think a better design/ layout might have been to have the special features that are on each disk acessible only from the in-episode guide on discs 1-4 and then available in the “features” tab on the last disk to make individual viewing of them easy after completing the season..

That said, the menus are beautiful and well-done… just a bit clumsy

Finally got a chance to watch Episode One with the commentaries and man, I *really* dig it. What a great set. The stunning picture quality alone is worth $35.

    I am SO loving this.

So, finally had a chance to open the box and watch an episode. Pretty much everything has been said about it what can be said about it, I’ll just add that the Dutch subtitles are ACE. Excellent translations, using the same translations for names and lands that are used in the dutch books. One negative point is that via the awesome audio the excessive ADR stands out, some dialoguescenes in the pilot feel a bit unnatural because of that. But if I remember correctly I was already annoyed by this when the pilot originally aired.

Just finished re-watching all 10 episodes.

Wow, taking an 8-month break from the show really made it more enjoyable to watch. I think I watched the episodes too many times last summer, but now they felt fresh again.

However, watching Season 1 straight through (over a few nights) really makes me realize how short the whole thing is. I don`t mind them trimming the fat, keeping the show packed with all the good parts, but somehow everything seems to happen a little too quickly (i.e. the time between Ned leaving the North and his eventual fate, seems so short). I think it lessens the shock and emotional impact of things, as compared to reading the books. But of course the books will always be better…

    Winter Is Coming,

Winter, has anyone found the location of the Maisie audtion yet?
I looked over disc 5 a number of times and did not find it… despite knowing it is on the disc SOMEWHERE. All the other Dragon Eggs have been located now, but Arya is good at hiding isn’t she! XD

The 5th easter egg can be found in the ‘making off’ when Maisie is talking about how the books are too adult for her to read.
