HBO wants you to “Pledge Your Allegiance” with these new house videos
By Winter Is Coming on in Marketing, Media.

HBO has released a series of house videos asking us to “pledge our allegiance” to a house, either Baratheon, Stark, Greyjoy, Targaryen, or Lannister . The videos feature a mixture of season one and season two footage. Check them out and then go declare your allegiance on the Game of Thrones Facebook page.

Winter Is Coming: So which house are you? I can’t decide between Greyjoy or Stark, they are both so awesome!

The Greyjoy one is the best. The boat looks great and the baptizing looks awesome. Really looking forward to Theon in season 2.

Edit: speaking of the Greyjoys, is We Do Not Sow going to do any newbie-recaps this year? Haven’t seen him around at all since season 1 ended!

    Dragonstone’s Baratheon FTW !
But I think non-book readers are going to hate Stannis and Mel in this second season.
This should change when Stannis saves the day at the wall in S3 of course!

Thanks for the links, WiC rocks again! Greywolf in the Stark clip rules, someone please make a GIF of that segment.
Looks like we catch a very brief glimpse of Jon ambushing Ygritte’s party.
Well they changed Pyke from having Captains beach their shipsto a real good for honest harbor.
Definitely, hands down the Greyjoy clip is the best of the bunch.
After that, the full on clip of Greywolf, as a close second, which shows you HBO went all out for the direwolves this time.

So this means the color for the day is Grey.

These are great! I’m so glad I refreshed the website one last time before hitting the sack.

House Stark for me, but more accurately: House Jon Snow! Actually it’s an even split between the Starks and Daenerys Targaryen.

I was hoping to get a glimpse of Asha, Victarion, and Euron in the Greyjoy feature. However, I’m satisfied that we got some new footage of the Iron Islands, Balon, Theon, and Aeron.

Stannis is my favorite Baratheon and one of my all time favorite characters in the books.

It’s only a spoiler if you recognize what those hanging things are on either side of the arch. If you do recognize it, it means you already know what happens. If you don’t know what happens, there’s no way you get spoiled by that. So no worries.

I assume that spoilery scene is when Asha arrives at Winterfell. I noticed Dagmer Cleftjaw in the Winterfell courtyard. Guess Theon will be taking the castle a little differently than in the book. I’m going to be really interested to see how they handle all the Reek/Ramsay stuff since it appears he hasn’t been cast.

WOW this is the kind of marketing that we always dreamed of. Can’t wait to see if non-book fans divide themselves into camps. I don’t really align myself with a House, but this kind of thinking fits Clash very well.

I chose Stark, because they stick together lockstep (no in-fighting). Funny, I don’t even think of Stannis as a Baratheon. Greyjoy has the best video.

On the other hand, I like that Robb is fighting for the freedom of his people from a tyrant. Especially since he was chosen by his people, rather than attempting to set himself up.

So I vote House Stark and Renly, the Better Baratheon!

I would be VERY HAPPILY surprised if the VFX company can proove me wrong and have the direwolves be touched with how they handled the way they created the direwolves, green skin and vfx editing.

I have got a funny feeling they are changing Theon’s story somewhat concerning little wolves.
Maybe Balon plans on attacking Winterfell in force (unlike books) and wants the boys killed as revenge for Theon’s two brothers. So Theon captures WF ahead of time, and lets the boys escape and uses the dummy corpses to fool Balon, so he will not have forces search for them.

Holly cow! I just got home to watch the Stark video and Greywind looks awesome. Every time I see GW he looks a little bit different. It’s like the evolution of CGI Greywind right before our eyes.

1st clip, he looked awful, like a stuffed animal with a wide gaping mouth being pushed towards Jaime.

2nd clip, when he was standing by Jaime he looked like a great big bear, pretty cool and very detailed, but not very lifelike.

3rd clip, “Seven Devils version 2″. He looked a little thinner and more lanky (like the Martin version of a Direwolf). And his gapping mouth turned into GW walking towards and snapping at jaime… Pretty cool. Huge improvement.

Now this version, GW is even more thin and lanky, his expressions are more detailed (like ear movement and eye movement). And his motion is smoother and more lifelike.

I must say the evolution of CGI Greywind is coming along very nicely. I am so glad, looks like the Direwolves will be of ultra high quality, just like the cast, writers, directors and producers.

My only fear was everything GoTs would be of epic quality, except the CGI (because of expense). It really looks like they set aside enough money to make everything come together with no weak points.

I watched that 2 second clip of Grewind like 20 times. I can see no flaws…

OMG… These videos are awesome! the music is too, everything is just bada$$ Makes me want to rumble! I am so ready to fight for House Stark…..

Any of you who oppose House Stark bring it on…

I will gladly face you on the battlefield. Our way is the old way.

Any of you want to meet the Seven, or have a word with R’hllor, step up. I will gladly send you on your way. How about you house Greyjoy? You want to meet the Drowned God? How about I slice your throat and let you drown in your own blood…

Our way is the old way. We were here long before you, and we will be here long after. The North remembers. Your blood will water our Weirwoods and your heads will make great decorations upon spears in front of Winterfell’s gate. We shall leave your corpses where they lay to feed the wolves and crows so all this land shall blossom at your defeat.

House Lannister, your incestuous, ungodly and nature defying cowardice ways shall be put to rest if you would come face us on the battlefield. You wont, you are smarter then that. Hide behind your espionage and King’s Landing walls, where your chance of survival is greatest.

House Greyjoy, your people are but boat fairing peasants. Your lack of power all but forced you to live where no one else wanted. You dwell in some island outskirts and every so often raid the shoreline killing the few men that oppose you and stealing their women and children. You want to face House Stark in the field? I don’t think so, you better paddle your a$$ back to that sad little group of Islands where you belong. You don’t want none.

House Baratheon, We were once great friends. It seems you have grown arrogant. Without our help your rebellion would have failed. I think you need to put that in perspective and realize that the king of the north bends the knee to no man. You want to talk about what is rightful? How about you rule over the 6 kingdoms and we don’t need to have any problems?

House Targaryen, Westeros is no longer your kingdom. Things have changed. Don’t think you can just come to this land and expect everyone to bend the knee because you are the blood of the dragon. If you come at House Stark looking for a fight you’ll get one. We will guarantee, before all is said and done, that one of our Direwolves will take a huge bite out of that Targaryen a$$ of yours.

This is House Stark, our way is the old way. When it comes to warring, we show no mercy, put heads on spikes and soak the ground red with our enemies blood. We are northerners, and the cold ring of steel is something we welcome if it is for a just cause. Any of you other houses think you got what it takes to take on a Stark, bring it. I will be more then happy to disembowel you and feed your enthralls to our pets…

    Arthur,

House Targaryen, this is House Stark, our way is the old way. When it comes to warring, we’ll respect the traditions of our ancestors and happily bend the knee.

There, I fixed it for you.

    House Stark till the end.
Though my ideal is to have Stannis on the Iron Throne, and Robb as the King in the North.

I loved Stannis’s “We shall see, Renly, we shall see.” Why is Stannis so awesome?
I also grinned at how Balon Greyjoy said, “How do you feel about that?”

House Targaryen is all talk. Or should I say, all yell.

    Dennai,

    Do not bend my words!!!

Our ancestors did not bend the knee without a fight. You think you can just show up and we will drop to our knees? Please come try telling us to bend the knee with that cute little brat temper of yours.

You say you are blood of the dragon. That’s nice, Summer never tasted dragon before. As he cracks open Dany’s thigh bone to feast on the marrow he will really appreciate the fact you are blood of the dragon. That is like a delicacy up in these parts. Not everyday we get to feast on Targaryen…

    It is known.

Go and spend some more time with Maester Luwin. I think your history lessons need some working.

Summer never tasted dragon before. As he cracks open Dany’s thigh bone to feast on the marrow he will really appreciate the fact you are blood of the dragon. That is like a delicacy up in these parts. Not everyday we get to feast on Targaryen…

Hush. So much talking of food is making my dragons salivate and I’m running off of slavers to feed them. And keep away that furball of yours from my babies. I don’t want them choking of all that hair.

    Dennai,

Look, I understand your history and I know things have been tough for you.

Since you have such a beautiful queen I will spare her life and that of her followers.

I will simply have Bran skin change into Drogon, while Dany is mounted, and fly her misguided, conquer craving, temper flaring, presumptuous Targaryen booty back to King’s Landing where she can rule over the 6 kingdoms. The King of the North will not bend the knee. Just to be sure Dany doesn’t attempt another Northern invasion, I will send Arya, a faceless woman, to infiltrate Dany’s court. A sharp dagger will always be a few feet from Dany’s throat.

If I hear any word that Dany plans to attack the north yet again. First, Arya will slit her throat. Second, Bran we systemically skin change into her dragons and have them feast upon her people. Third, Nymeria along with her pack of several hundred wolfs will attack all your outlaying villages. Your newly formed, hard fought Westeros kingdom will suffer such great catastrophe that people will remember your reign for ages because of how bloody its downfall was. You can avoid all this by excepting these terms…

Respect the north, rule over your 6 kingdoms. We can call a truce. Otherwise, The Old Gods will be set upon you…..

I would pledge my allegiance to the rightful king, Stannis. The delivery of “we shall see” line was pure gold. Although, I gotta say I like the Greyjoy video best. Mainly because of all the new footage. There were some really weak extras in S1, so at first I was quite sceptical about this generic-drowned-priest-instead-of-Aeron switch … but extra or not, he sure sounds awesome.

House STARK.. aka House Direwolf! Damn, Grey Wind looks B.A.D.A.S.S. I literally cried when I saw the House Stark video. Big crocodile tears were rolling down my face.. i’m so lame!! lol It’s a good thing the direwolves are gonna be spread out, cuz I don’t know if I can handle them all together.

How are we going to survive Season 2 and then the wait to Season 3?! I’m afraid for this season to start.. so much emotion coming our way.

Rejecting the other houses because… Stannis REALLY grew on me throughout the books, but he has Melissandre with him.. I don’t like her fear of the dark and her fires are bad for the environment. haha

Dany is too unorganized for me to back and the Lannisters are insane! I’m afraid of what will happen to Westeros if the Greyjoy’s ever got a hold of it. It would be like Pirates of the Carribean run amok! lol

I can’t wait to see everyone fight for the prickly throne!! I’m so excited!

    Yey! Me too!

I can’t really go for the houses (Except Marteel ftw!), I much prefer individual characters as an option. I love the Wildlings and would quite like to choose them.

Including Jon in the Stark vid jarred me. He was never a Stark and now he is a brother of the Night’s Watch. Grrrrr.

    Grey Wind looks beautiful.
I think I may join the Dany-haters this season. She was uber in book 2 but I think the shouting and screechy voice comes across as petulant and bratty. This was many people’s irritation with her as a book character, so it will be interesting if that is the route they are taking in the show.

All of them are nice. Plenty of new visuals to take in. But there is one missing from the set of loyalty choices. Shame on them!

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all nights to come

There’s only one “house” to which I’ll bend my knee.

Any of you who oppose House Stark bring it on…

I will gladly face you on the battlefield. Our way is the old way.

Any of you want to meet the Seven, or have a word with R’hllor, step up.I will gladly send you on your way.How about you house Greyjoy? You want to meet the Drowned God?How about I slice your throat and let you drown in your own blood…

Our way is the old way.We were here long before you, and we will be here long after. The North remembers.Your blood will water our Weirwoods and your heads will make great decorations upon spears in front of Winterfell’s gate.We shall leave your corpses where they lay to feed the wolves and crows so all this land shall blossom at your defeat.

House Lannister, your incestuous, ungodly and nature defying cowardice ways shall be put to rest if you would come face us on the battlefield. You wont, you are smarter then that.Hide behind your espionage and King’s Landing walls, where your chance of survival is greatest.

House Greyjoy, your people are but boat fairing peasants.Your lack of power all but forced you to live where no one else wanted. You dwell in some island outskirts and every so often raid the shoreline killing the few men that oppose you and stealing their women and children. You want to face House Stark in the field?I don’t think so, you better paddle your a$$ back to that sad little group of Islands where you belong. You don’t want none.

House Baratheon, We were once great friends. It seems you have grown arrogant.Without our help your rebellion would have failed.I think you need to put that in perspective and realize that the king of the north bends the knee to no man.You want to talk about what is rightful? How about you rule over the 6 kingdoms and we don’t need to have any problems?

House Targaryen, Westeros is no longer your kingdom.Things have changed.Don’t think you can just come to this land and expect everyone to bend the knee because you are the blood of the dragon. If you come at House Stark looking for a fight you’ll get one.We will guarantee, before all is said and done, that one of our Direwolves will take a huge bite out of that Targaryen a$$ of yours.

This is House Stark, our way is the old way. When it comes to warring, we show no mercy, put heads on spikes and soak the ground red with our enemies blood. We are northerners, and the cold ring of steel is something we welcome if it is for a just cause.Any of you other houses think you got what it takes to take on a Stark, bring it.I will be more then happy to disembowel you and feed your enthralls to our pets…

    Tell ‘em Arthur!

This is amazing. I sure didn’t even notice this shot while watching the video so I doubt non-readers will ever notice it. In fact, I looked at the screenshot for several seconds before noticing anything amiss. I’m so happy they’re going there -and- this season. This is gonna be great.

I can’t wait to see Jon Snow interacting with Ghost.

I have a feeling we have not seen any Ghost footage due to the producers wanting the Ghost CGI to be completely finished for final cut. So everyone who is waiting to see Ghost will not be disappointed.

    Arthur:
I am so glad, looks like the Direwolves will be of ultra high quality, just like the cast, writers, directors and producers.

My only fear was everything GoTs would be of epic quality, except the CGI (because of expense). It really looks like they set aside enough money to make everything come together with no weak points.

Not to be a cynic, but I think you may be getting a little ahead of yourself.

First, while the shot is improving, it’s also just a two second, dark, simple shot.

Secondly, I heard it mentioned that to achieve the wolves, they’re just using footage of real wolves and editing it with CGI. Can someone confirm this?

If that is the case, while the wolves will probably look pretty bad ass when on screen, that approach will limit what can and can’t be done with the wolves (they’re still dependant on the wolves “performing” for them)

In that isn’t the case, and they’re completely CGI, then I’d really recommend waiting before you call the sfx “ultra high quality”.

People are saying “see, I knew there was nothing to worry about”, however, as someone who does 3D animation for a living, I can assure you one short, dark, simple shot isn’t enough to close the case.

Believe me, I truly hope the season proves there was ultimately no cause for concern, but we’re not out of the woods yet.

I think I’ll be happy however they turn out. Those Twilight movies are pretty crap, but the wolves look good in it.

Here’s the thing–and this isn’t directed at anyone in particular–but with imaginary creatures, I think we fans have to suspend disbelief a little. I’m sure the CGI artists that HBO hired want to do as good a job as possible. But there will still be those that say, Oh, the direwolf doesn’t walk right; or the wings on the dragons look weird.

This is just the price we pay when we are trying to see imaginary creatures on screen. I also think that in a world where we see so many TV shows and movies with CGI, we have become inured to it. But we shouldn’t. We all become critics of CGI when most of us have no idea how hard and labor-intensive (and expensive, mind you) it is to pull off.

At any rate, I’m not worrying one bit about the direwolves or dragons or any effects for Thrones. Because even if it did turn out crap–and I know it won’t–it’s still about THE STORY…and not how a wolf opens its mouth.

Thank you and God Bless America…

    0KEN0,

They are likely using wolves to make the animations and looks of the CGI models as good as possible but that doesn’t mean that they can’t make their models do other things. They certainly aren’t using wolves on set, for the same reason it was impossible to use wolves last season, instead of dogs.

    0KEN0,

I agree with you in the sense that you shouldn’t judge the CGI quality of a 10 hour series based on a 2 second clip.

However, all I was trying to say is from that 1st peek of GW to the clip in this link, there has been a steady increase of detail and quality. That 1st clip where we get to see GW with that gaping mouth was laughable and I was very upset. But then there was that 2nd where he looked like a big bear, there was more detail and some movement. Then there was the clip of his gaping mouth being transitioned into a snapping threat in front of Jaime’s face, which made it much more realistic. Now, we get to see an even more detailed and thinned out greywind with ear and eye movement. There has been a steady progression and If all the shots of the Direwolves are of that comparable quality I will be a very happy camper.

Yes, I also heard they used real wolves. I am pretty sure they were used for wide shots, with them running or trotting, so they can be CGIed over and made to look much bigger. The close shots, like the one with Robb next to Greywind, I am pretty sure it was said they used a detailed Mechanical wolf, that was to be CGIed over as well.

And just remember. Technology only gets better and better as the months go by. They already spent the money to have this CGI done and now they have the base CGI. I believe it will be a good base to build off in future seasons. I also believe they said the Direwolves will still be getting bigger as the seasons go on. So, I honestly believe, we will be in store for some awesome CGI direwolf/Dragon scenes down the road.

Only a few days away… Soon all we have pictured in our heads while reading the books will be brought to life in front of our eyes. I am so excited!!!

Oh yeah… House Stark till my death… and Beyond!!!

    1. Obviously our taste differ. The wolves in Twilight are s*** :P
    2. Unfortunately, it does matter. Bad vfx will take most people out of the moment, and anything that takes you out of the moment, ultimately hurts the story.

In any case, I mostly agree with what you’re saying. I expect the vfx to be good-great overall, and as long as the wolves are not pure s*** (which doesn’t appear to be the case), I’m sure the show will turn out just fine.

I was just saying that, as someone who does know what is involved in vfx, one sketchy shot is not enough to judge the rest of the season on.

    Tywin’s Bastard,

I understood it as, they were using footage of wolves by themselves, filmed off set. They’d then digitally insert the wolf into the scene. I understand they cannot use real wolves on set.

As for using wolves for the models, yes footage of wolves was surely used for modelling and animation reference; however, if the wolves are completely CGI, that it no way guarantees high quality.

It would be great if we could confirm how the vfx team is producing the wolves. If what you say above is true, then there are inherent limitations in that approach.

If they’re using a combination of real footage and animatronics, CGI’d up, they’re still dependant on the “acting” of real wolves/machines.

For the footage, either they’re a) finding pre-existing footage of wolves (thus they’re at the mercy of whatever angles/actions they can manage to find), or b) they’re capturing the footage of the wolves themselves. They’re still dependant on an animal “acting”. Furthermore, there are things that a real wolf wont/can’t do that a direwolf could/will need to do in the series.

Same goes for the animatronics. They’re very limited in what they can do.

Bottom line is, if that IS the approach they’re taking, then scenes where direwolves are jumping in the air and pulling people from horses, etc. etc. will likely continue to be omitted from the show (see Brans ambush season 1), because an approach like that will make complex, “unnatural” actions hard to impossible to do.

On the other hand, if the wolves are completely CGI (or at least they have a completely CGI version for the “unnatural” stuff)… then that’s good, but it presents a whole new set of problems, as getting a completely CGI wolf right is hard to do (see Day After Tomorrow, Twilight, etc).

    0KEN0,

I totally agree with you about bad vfx can bring a viewer out of the moment. Glad you pointed that out. That is why I was so upset at the 1st peek of Greywind. Also, what people may have failed to realize is….

They are really playing up the murder of Robb during the RW. They gave Jeyne a much greater role to pull the viewer into the Robb/Jeyne Romance. When I read the books and came to the RW. It hit me like a rock. I was very upset how Robb was killed. But what upset me more was how Grewind was killed. I actually cried.

***Greywind, in a large cage with trailer trash Frey crossbow men laughing and pointing their crossbows. Scene of Robb getting several crossbolts shot into his ribs and chest. Table being flipped over and Robb crawling behind it… Bleeding, dieing. Scene of the Frey crossbow men laughing and bolts being shot into Greywind. Bolts thudding into Greywinds chest, Greywind bleeding, crawling… More bolts thud into Greywind… Greywind opens his eyes and with all his stregth lets out a chilling blood soaked howl. Robb opening his eyes and right before he dies, with all his strenth murmurs, “Greywind… ” and dies. Camera pans towards Robb as he dies, then towards Greywind as he dies, with the life seeping out of his eyes, while Frey laughter is in the background…***

Something like that scene would hit you HARD! Everyone will be traumatized. I think the affect of a pet being killed has a more dramatic affect then of a character. Think about it. Most of us, at one time or another have owned a pet. Unfortunately many of us also had to put a pet down. A scene of Greywind being brutally murdered would hit the viewer very hard and conjure up all those sad memories.

So, the more lifelike you have Greywind appear. The more people will grow attached and the overall impact of the whole series will rise a few levels. That is why CGI is important. These fantasy creatures aren’t monsters. They are comparable to the character’s children. Greywind, although he is a huge and fierce Direwolf, is Robbs baby. I am glad the CGI on him looks amazing. The scenes with Grewind will be hitting the TV viewer like a ton of bricks…

    0KEN0,

Nothing guarantees high quality CGI, it’s all down to the execution, which is in turn both about knowledge and time/money.

I’m with those that aren’t worried about less than great CGI though. People that get taken out of the story due to that have too poor imagination and are therefor poor viewers. A really good viewer should be able to watch a movie like The Terminator and stay immersed the entire time.

People should put as much pressure on themselves as they put on the makers of shows/movies.

I’m a little surprised Renly’s marriage is revealed in his profile video and that Brienne has been shown at all. If not, I really really hope that, at least the Reeds somehow intercept Osha, Bran, Rickon, and Hodor on their way North.

The thing about GRRM is that nobody and nothing is insignificant. Everything and everyone are a part of the story for a reason and, if you remove something that is as important as I feel the parties above are, you’re basically pulling a plank out of the bridge that is the whole story.

Yes, I know it would be impossible to include everything, but I’d rather (and I’d wager the majority of ASOIAF fans would too) that we gave the Reeds and Ramsay the screen time that is taken up by Ros.

Its not that the Targaryen and Lannister ones are bad, its just that its footage we’ve already seen in other trailers or in season one.

I think the TV show did a good a job as any trying to emphasize that Theon *isn’t* a Stark, that there’s these things called the Iron Islands and House Greyjoy…..

….but you know, just KNOW that there are going to be mouth-breathers and casual fans who feel its this utter tangent when they introduce the Iron Islands subplot, Theon’s father and sister, and start widening the scope of the war.

The Stark one was great but also much we’ve already seen.

The Baratheon one was great for actually emphasizing Stannis to the public.

So yeah, the Baratheon/Greyjoy/Stark trailers were great; the others were “appropriate” its just there’s only so much they can show to get the basics across.

I don’t know, those bodies seem absurdly small to me to be seen as humans let alone Bran and Rickon, or am I looking at it the wrong way?

Yeah you must be looking at it the wrong way. As a dude who has seen many fakes in his time and can usually spot them due to the pixels, as well as a dude who works full-time with children, those look real and horrifying enough to me. The size is about right although they seem a bit too close in size for their age difference, but that’s kind of explained by it not actually being them, so if we see much of those “decorations” it might be a hint for the attentive yet non-book-reading fan.

Really, I’d be surprised if the HBO props people suddenly went from making gorgeous and impressive-looking stuff that all looks cohesive in terms of the (made up) era the GoT story is derived from down to ridiculously minute details… and then suddenly being stumped on how to figure out the height of a child in Bran’s/Rickon’s age range.
