HBO announces official Game of Thrones companion book

HBO has announced a forthcoming “visual companion book” entitled Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones. The book is authored by Bryan Cogman (I’m guessing this is the project he teased in our recent interview with him) and promises to provide fans with “behind-the-scenes stories and details about transforming the best-selling book series to the screen.”

According to HBO, the book will contain character profiles, on-set photography, maps, family trees and interviews with cast and crew members. It will also contain a foreword by George R. R. Martin, an introduction by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and a fold-out map of Westeros. More details in the full press release after the break.

Winter Is Coming: This sounds pretty cool. I was suspecting they might put out something like this. I really hope they include some concept art in the book too. I’m a sucker for cool concept art.

Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones Brings the World of Westeros to Life in Fall 2012

SAN FRANCISCO – March 26, 2012 – Chronicle Books and HBO are pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones [Fall 2012]. Game of Thrones is the hit television series based on the A Song of Ice and Fire from George R.R. Martin. Written by Bryan Cogman, one of the show writers, Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones is a visual companion to the series that provides behind-the-scenes stories and details about transforming the best-selling book series to the screen.

Martin created an amazing fantasy world that has captivated and enchanted the imagination of fans throughout the world. “The extraordinarily talented actors and artisans who work tirelessly to bring Game of Thrones to life are unequaled anywhere,” stated Cogman. “This book is a tribute to them. It’s been a joy to write for this fantastic series and an honor to put together this book, which I hope will please fans, both old and new.”

“The team at Chronicle Books loves the Song of Fire and Ice and is obsessed with the show,” said Sarah Malarkey, Chronicle Books’ Executive Editorial Director. “The chance to collaborate with HBO and the Game of Thrones team to capture their magic on paper is a total treat for us—and we anticipate will be for the show’s fans, too.”

  • This was my prediction after the interview with Cogman:

Junior writers are sometimes tasked with writing behind the scenes guides – see Rafael Alvarez and The Truth Be Told guide book for The Wire. I would guess it will be something in the realm of the printed word.

    Good news, wishlisted.

  • I don’t buy many physical books anymore but this one will be sitting on my shelves….. or coffee table in the future! By the Seven it will be there!

  • “The team at Chronicle Books loves the Song of Fire and Ice”

Not enough to get the name right, I suppose.

But this is going to be an excellent addition to our coffee table… if it comes out in the fall, hopefully that means it covers season 2 just as comprehensively as season 1, with maybe even some season 3 teasers…

  • “The team at Chronicle Books loves the Song of Fire and Ice and is obsessed with the show,” said Sarah Malarkey, Chronicle Books’ Executive Editorial Director.

Ouch. That’s gotta sting. She’s got some egg on her face.

But I guess nobody believes her anyway, she’s full of malarkey.

  • Kinda sounds interesting, but almost feels like just another GoT gimmick. I love the books and show as much as everyone else, but something doesn’t quite sit right with this. I consider my GRRM collection to be quite extensive, but not sure I’ll be spending my money on this. That’s just me though.

  • By the way I saw that Costco had the blue ray discs with a bonus Book of design drafts etc, does anyone have more information? I got the Best Buy discs since I thought the extra sleeve was worth the trip and tax compared to Amazon, but this definitely sounds interesting!

Going back to the OP: might be nice, where will we find it? HBO store only?

  • I just searched for this on Amazon only to find the “Official cookbook” for ASoIaF. I don’t know if this site has already covered it, it’s not out for a while anyway, but it has recipes for various regions in the setting. Sounds like fun.

  • Chronicle has some lovely books on its site–all sorts of topics. Also, they run sales–often. Just sign for their email. Usually it’s 30 or 35% off, plus free shipping with no minimum. I’ve bought Moleskines from them, as well.

  • Tropxe,

It was written by the lovely girls at the Inn at the Crossroads blog, I’ve tried a few of their recipes at a GoT feast my housemate and I held. Absolutely fantastic! I’ve pre-ordered and can’t recommend it highly enough to fans of both food and Game of Thrones.

  • Awesome — I’ll buy this book for sure. :)

And I agree about the concept art — I’d LOVE to see some concept art, whether it’s in here or a different book.
