Entertainment Weekly continues its coverage of Game of Thrones today with some new photos, both from the cover shoot and the set of Thrones.
The cover shoot photos show Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in various poses, including the previously-released “rocking out” pic.
The set photos include shots of Tywin, Arya, Dany and also some good glimpses of the royal family including some great photos of Tommen and Myrcella. There are also a few shots of some of the cast goofing off on set, including this priceless photo of Peter kissing Lena.
Lastly, the PopWatch blog asks fans to vote on which of the four EW covers is their favorite.
Winter Is Coming: More great stuff from EW. Any one get this week’s issue yet?

I have to say: Lena looks fantastic in all of these, *specially* the one where she wears the Lannister red gown. Lovely looks at Tommen and Myrcella, too.
Also: First (again)! :P

Katja,
I don’t see any problem with the dragon.
MagnusQuote Reply
Magnus,
the problem with the dragon is that it’s not very well blended. it’s not a very good representation of the quality of the cg in the show itself which is why I think it was probably a mistake to include it.
GrandmaFunkQuote Reply
Maisie Williams may not have the “long face”, but she looks like a dude in the portrait of hers in the EW gallery. Plus, she has the grey eyes, unlike Sean Bean, Kit Harrington and Isaac Hempstead-Wright.
She’s perfect.

Doesn’t the cover with Peter on it give away the fact that he becomes Hand of the King? Or is that something they aren’t worried about revealing.

Great photos, and I say it as a photographer as well as a fan of the book and TV series.
And… Marcella Baratheon??? Oh well… hope EW fixes that slight vowel problem.
Agree that the dragon is really bad but everything else is fantastic

GrandmaFunk,
Would you even have noticed if you didn’t know it was cgi? All the colors and contrasts in that picture are very sharp. I have experienced so many situations where people have said “that was really bad cgi”, and then it wasn’t cgi at all. When you know or think something is fake, you immediately look for small mistakes.
MagnusQuote Reply
yes, even if it was say a picture of a real bird instead of a rendered dragon…it pops out as something that was obviously photoshopped in …not as one seamless image.
it’s awfully minor but looks a bit cheap in comparison to what you would get from the show itself.

Love the photo of Aimee Richardon as Myrcella -or is it Marcella :-) -notice her wardrobe and necklace are almost identical to her mother’s. Fulfilling Tyrion’s assessment in Book I that she has her mother’s looks but none of her cruelty.

Lena looks more like the Cersei I imagined now. Red dress and a better wig probably help, but the look on her face is just right. And Myrcella is perfectly cast. She looks so grown up though.

The ones of Sophie and Maisie are absolutely spectacular! I must say I don’t much like the backdrop on the studio photos – a bit lacklustre. But Cersei is looking much better this season, and it’s nice to see Tommen and Myrcella.

IMO her eyebrows look much more natural on the show…I don’t know why EW’s make-up artists–or photoshoppers–didn’t do something about those.

New York (AP) – The fantasy series “Game of Thrones” was canceled by HBO after a third dragon died during production of the drama starring Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey.
“Game of Thrones” about the seedier side of fantasy, will air the final ten episodes of its second season, HBO said Wednesday. But the series won’t return for the third season that was scheduled to start production in July.
“While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future,” the channel said. “Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.”
HBO said it was “immensely proud” of the series and those involved in it, and the producers said in a joint statement that they “loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers.”
Actor Peter Dinklage, who co-stars on “Game of Thrones” and was in the movie “Elf,” tweeted his support to the HBO series: “So bummed. Peace out to all my family in (hash)GoT.”
The American Humane Association, which oversees animal welfare on Hollywood productions, said that in light of the three deaths “this is arguably the best decision HBO could have made.”
The group said it will work with HBO to ensure that the dragons used on “Game of Thrones” are “retired properly.”
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which had been sharply critical of the production, welcomed the cancellation and offered advice to HBO and the producers if they decide to resume it.
“PETA will be calling on them, as we have done from the start, to use stock dragon footage instead of endangering dragons for entertainment purposes,” the group said in a statement.
In August, a dragon was injured and euthanized in Croatia, and HBO agreed to suspend filming with the animals after the American Humane Association issued an immediate demand “that all production involving dragons shut down” pending an investigation.
The animal was flying towards it’s perch when it became distracted by the filming of a sexposition scene and flew into a cliff, suffering a head injury, according to HBO. The dragon was euthanized on the spot.
During season-one filming in 2011, two dragons were hurt during the hatching scene and euthanized. HBO defended its treatment of the animals, saying it’s worked with the humane association and racing industry experts to implement safety protocols that exceed film and TV industry standards. “We thought fire couldn’t hurt a dragon. We are so sorry we are wrong” said an HBO spokesperson.

One thing it says is counting repeats, DVR and On Demand, it averaged 9.3 million viewers per episode. I don’t know if that’s been publicized before, but that’s impressive!
MetalgoddessAMBQuote Reply
It says something about a disturbing execution in episode two (by joffrey) which will test even his mother’s devotion.
and Lena says “We get to see more of her unraveling.”
MetalgoddessAMBQuote Reply
Um…I assume they are talking about Barra? In the books Cersei ordered it..not Joffrey. Joffrey is still oblivious to his true parentage–or so he acts.
mikeintexasQuote Reply
“Jaime Lannister was captured near the end of the first season and spends most of the second book imprisoned, but don’t expect that storyline to play out the way it does in the book.”
I guess we kind of know this already though. We just don’t know how, haha.
and they pretty much confirmed that A Storm of Swords will be two seasons!

You can buy the issue via the Ew app already. I got bought it last might Australian time. There is a GCI Ghost.
Ser Lemon CakeQuote Reply
I guess that is it, I was just wracking my brain trying to figure out who it was. But the tone of the article makes it seem that Cersei is surprised and horrified by it.
the exact quote from the article is “you get a real glimpse into her guilt as a mother and her fear of what she’s created…’ and then she says the unraveling line.

MetalgoddessAMBQuote Reply
mikeintexas,
I don’t think this is it, because the episode recap says that Tyrion chastens Cersei for the Kings Landing purge. Implying that she ordered it. Joff also seemed oblivious to his parentage in the last season.
MagnusQuote Reply
I really do not want to be naysayer but I do not like the idea that Joff orders the murder of little Barra
It has to be Cersei.
The RabbitQuote Reply
In the article, Lean’s comments about Cersei in this season come right after the mention of the episode two execution. I could all be a bit misleading though, taken out of context or due to the editing of the article. She (Lena) could just be mentioning how Cersei is feeling by the end of the season, not just after that one incident. But yeah, they do know how to get you though, the way they word the article. Because I too don’t want to see any “softening” of Cersei. She’s a villain, and should always be portrayed that way and no other.
MetalgoddessAMBQuote Reply
CGI Ghost? I think he looks fine, but I am not very critical about this kind of thing, in particular as 2D cgi looks bad in print. He looks very big and fluffy. His neck looks a bit off perhaps? I think it could be the angle. Eyes not very red, but that could be explainvet by the light.
I would be happy if he looked like this on screen, but I could here the possible complaints from others in my mind. Every hair can not be perfect in publication.

Typical Cersei … making a minime out of her daughter. :D
Also; Emilia looks awesome!
Also #2; That rocking out photo … it’s what sir Christopher Lee(and many others, for that matter) would call “symphonic metal”. Half of the people are rocking out, whilst Tyrion, representing the other half, is singing in a choir.
And also #3; I saw some people comment on the dragon not looking real before, but wasn’t able to respond. I think the dragon’s a puppet. A puppet of Drogon.

geez, I can’t think of the name of the procedure-you know, when people stuff their dead pets because they want them with them forever? Or in the Natural history museums where they have all those animals propped up in displays? that’s what it looks like in the photo in the magazine. :(

A still shot of a CGI animal designed for motion is likely to look that way – presumably they would have taken a frame of finished footage, rather than having the CG teams make up a new render just for the promo. If so, it’s likely to look a little off.
How it actually looks remains to be seen.
As long as nobody expects them to look as good as they do in your imagination (where there is unlimited rendering budget for sub-surface scattering and millions of single fibre interactions, and there is always perfectly aligned rotoscoping, light blending and motion blur), they should be fine.

I love all the attention and buzz GoT is getting but at the same time I am dreadfully worried that this series will become too popular for its own good and turn into True Blood. The more popular this series becomes based on “buzz”, the more things may be changed to cater to the masses. I seriously hope there will be no naked Rolling Stone covers forthcoming…
