Twitter user @FittenTrim noticed HBO airing an updated version (and furrever first mentioned it in the comments) of the Power and Grace trailer with a couple of new frames, and took a snapshot. The most exciting new angle provides a clear look at the season two version of a direwolf – Robb’s Grey Wind:
Hear Me Roar: I like the general design, and am looking forward to seeing the rest of the direwolves. Of course, the proof will be in the animation, but this still looks great to me. I hope HBO soon publishes the updated version on YouTube as well.
UPDATE: Now available on YT thanks to darquemode. It’s a shortened, one-minute version with good pacing.

Now it works fine, thanks.
The still certainly looks good and we instantly see one advantage compared to the dogs, which is of course that it’s features is now clearly those of a wolf. As the article says, the hard part is to get the animation right, but as we can’t have too high hopes since it’s a notoriously tough animal type to animate and it’s still just a TV show.

What’s interesting is that the official HBO video currently posted on their YouTube site is missing the gape-mouthed direwolf scene that precipitated Wolfgate.
It amazes me that HBO is worried enough about fan reaction to bother re-editing and releasing three versions of the trailer: dodgy half-finished Grey Wind, no Grey Wind, and finished Grey Wind. If there was any doubt that they are paying attention to online fan reaction, I think this removes it.
Hopefully they will upload this new and improved third version of the trailer to their YouTube channel soon.

I think Grey Wind looks great: just like a larger, scarier version of a wild wolf. Now I look forward to seeing the others: Ghost, Summer, Shaggy Dog, Nymeria (?? please ?? I hope we get to see her again. *warning: major spoiler follows* I hope when the time comes they keep that sequence where Nymeria pulls Cat’s body out of the river. And I hope it is clear that Arya is seeing it through Nymeria’s eyes.)
I’m glad the first batch of comments are positive; I cringe at the thought of all the haters filling up this page with nasty comments, as keeps happening whenever HBO releases something for us. Hopefully HBO understands that the majority of us are very happy with what they’ve done for this series.

Hm … got me thinking … what if Grey Wind will be the reason for Jamie’s eventual left-handedness in the show, and not Vargo? Because we know for a fact, that they moved some of the book 3 stuff to season 2. And Vargo hasn’t been cast.
In any case, the direwolf looks awesome and for what it’s worth … Pixomondo did the majority of Hugo’s special effects, who in turn won an Oscar in that category. Now, I know that the quality of these studios’ work tends to be in proportion with the cash, you pour into them(rather than the name of the company itself), but still … I don’t think they’ll disappoint.

BlaatQuote Reply

radQuote Reply
Pepi,
I hope not. Here’s why: GW cutting off Jaime’s hand would most definitely fuel anger towards the Starks. Vargo cutting off his hand fuels Jaime’s hatred of Vargo and makes it that much more satisfying when we learn of Vargo’s fate. What makes Jaime’s story so interesting from Book 2 onward is he changes into a likable character and not the super villain/anti-Stark we thought of in book 1. He even ends up trying to make up for his past transgressions by trying to save Sansa and Arya (when he gives the sword to Brienne)

Dreamlife,
Yeh, that’s what I thought at first, too … but Grey Wind biting it off doesn’t really change anything. Especially if there will be no Vargo Hoat, not even in season 3. The Lannisters will still hate the Starks but Jamie will still be alive, so the Starks will still have their hostage(for all I know, Grey Wind biting off his hand could be Jamie’s own falt … he could provoke the beast somehow … or something). And Jamie will still be able to take his path of redemption afterwards. Or wait … here’s another option; Jamie could lose his hand during the Karstark’s little vendetta. Admittedly a better one.

I was able to catch the tail end of the newly edited trailer. Here is what has been changed in the last thirty seconds or so.
The glimpse of Craster is one of the quick flashes at the very end of the trailer, so he’s difficult to get a good look at even while pausing. It’s a low angle shot and he appears to be striking at something on the ground. Looks menacing.
The Grey Wind shot captured above is brief and it is preceded by a new close-up of Jaime. Those few excessively picky commenters will be pleased to know that there is a growl and yet the wolf keeps his mouth closed.
The Robb/Jeyne section and Dany’s, “When my dragons are grown…” line come much later, just before the final montage. This likely suggests that the trailer has been truncated for television.
Additionally, there is a new angle of the guards outside of Qarth.

I think it looks really good, but I also had no issue with the profile shot that was in the trailer before. Count me as one of those people that doesn’t care very much about the direwolves. Initially I was fine with them using whatever dogs they wanted and just featuring the direwolves a lot less than in the book. But season one just had a really disjointed, really sparse use of the dogs, so we’ll see if this is better. I still don’t expect to see too much of them. They’re probably really expensive and they will look so much better if used sparingly and under the right conditions (like avoiding full body shots in bright clear sunlight, etc).

Even if it’s a different effects studio, I still have complete faith that anything going into this production is going to be a landmark achievement for television.

More likely the commentary alerted the producers to the fact that an incomplete shot (the CGI seemed to be only partially finished on Grey Wind) had snuck into a trailer. Any incomplete shot would need to be taken out for quality control if it gets caught. Not about catering to the trolls, but a dedication to quality and only showing finished product.

1st. That Dire Wolf looks amazing. I was never a troll. I love this series and read, then listened to all the books. I am so happy someone at HBO took a second look at that Dire Wolf and its mechanics in that 1st trailer and decided to rework it.
As I stated before. The Dire Wolfs represent everything bada$$ about the north. They are IMO the old gods gift to the Starks. Kind of like the Starks guardian angels. They are also a HUGE part of the whole “Fantasy” element of the books/series. I just wanted their budget to reflect this importance. Reading chapters that included Bran’s POV as a dire wolf and all the other dire wolf parts have always been really exciting to me. That is why I was so dissappointed at that 1st glimps of that CGI dire wolf. I thought people on here would respect that and not just attack me. I am no troll. I love this series.
I am VERY happy with that shot of Grey Wind. He looks amazing and is huge and beautiful. Now, I can really enjoy the series watching my imagination come to life as Ghost, Grey Wind and the other dire wolfs pad around being bada$$.
Thank you Game of Thrones!

I don’t think people were attacking you (at least not at first), just disagreeing with you. People started to get more fed up when you continued to hit everyone over the head with your opinion and started to use the old “I’m right, you’re wrong” defense. That is when it went from merely stating your opinion to borderline trolling.
Anyway, hopefully you can use this as a learning experience: when it seems that you are not going to change people’s minds, it is best to just let it go. :)

Lina,
I totally agree! And I have heard people talking about if the dire wolfs look this good we may not see a lot of them because it would cost so much. That may be true but I am hoping its not and I don’t think it will be the case for these reasons;
1). Bran’s POV of skin changing into his dire wolf can be done (and I think I am getting ahead of myself and most of this will be is season 3) by just simply making the camera shots a 1st person of what the dire wolfs eyes see. Yeah you would have to CGI in some paws when he looks down and maybe the end of his muzzle. But I think the CGI would be less expensive doing it this way (camera view out of Summer’s eyes from Summer’s POV) would be less expensive and even more authentic (more true to the books).
2). I am no CGI computer programmer but I think once you get the core CGI done (the dire wolf art and movements) it can easily be put into different scenes. Kind of like “Copy and Paste”. The hard part would be the shadowing and having realistic expressions and reactions from the environment around the CGIed dire wolf (mainly the actors). I think that’s what that mechanical wolf on set was for. To give the actors something to look at and react to and also the proper shadows and environmental reacts (like paw prints in the snow).
I am no expert on hollywood CGI but to me this kind of makes sense. And when you take all that into account. I think we may be in store for some really awesome looking dire wolfs spread out throughout the episodes and not as thinly as you may think =)
ArthurQuote Reply
I just hope they haven’t designed a generic direwolf to be ‘painted’ in one way or another depending on which direwolf appears in each scene. It would be a cheaper way to go abouut it, I admit, but it would give a sense of a cheap copy-paste.
I feel the same way about the dragons.
Grey Wind looks gorgeous though!!

I think once the CGI company gets a base model completed. (Lets say Grey Wind is the base model). They can easily add a few different characteristics to make each dire wolf unique besides fur color… But also remember, they are all from the same litter and should look very alike.

It’s obvious the producers set aside ample funds to have great looking CGI dire wolves.
That was my only concern, settling for very low budget CGI. That worrie is now crushed with that one screen cap of that beautiful beast named Grey Wind… If the artwork is that detailed and lifelike then the animation of it will without question be the same.
Go Starks!!!
PeterQuote Reply
I’ll bet $1000 this doesn’t happen. I still think they’ll use the direwolves sparingly, and I can’t see them spending the money/ runtime to illustrate something that (despite what we book fans might think), doesn’t mean very much in the grand scheme of things.
0KEN0Quote Reply
I don’t know if Arthur’s attention to detail helped HBO improve the show or not, or if they just removed an incomplete shot as it was being worked on anyway, but either way I’m glad it is getting better. I do wonder what the wolf in the other shot will look like though… I think we had pretty much come to the conclusion that the other shot was the animatronic wolf, perhaps missing some cgi enhancement. This is obviously a completely different shot. I wonder if this wolf is the animatronic one or cgi?

saluk,
I don’t think my criticism of the dire wolf in that 1st trailer influenced HBO.
What could have happened is someone who has a direct line of communicating with the producers brought to light this boards debate over the quality of that dire wolf and they looked into it and pulled it and incerted the finished product.
I think this could have been the case of GoTs producers trying to be kind and give us a glimpse of what’s to come and not knowing how hypercritical some of the fans, like myself would be…
What ever the case I think it’s awesome to know someone with direct connections to the show is on here listening to us. I think people pointing out what they like and dislike about the show/CGI can only help improve it.

Last season, they didn’t make any attempt to show wolf dreams. This season, I think they will try to show that Jon and Bran can experience things through their wolves when they are sleeping – Osha will help us understand it. I also think they will remind us that Nymeria is still alive, and at least hint that Arya is having wolf dreams too. I think they will do this to set up for season 3, when Nymeria and her pack take down the forces pursuing Arya, Gendry and Hot Pie out of Harrenhal.

My first thought was that once the Seaon 1 BD and DVD are officially released the promotion for Season 2 will kick into high gear and more videos will be released more frequently…. I hope!
My second thought is that because so many of the BD/ DVD features are videos that alreayd aired (the large majority)…. maybe they will withhold those videos this year to let the disc sets have more NEW material.

thanks alot darquemode. not really that much different, couple of different looks and extended shots. you do get a brief glimpse of Craster in the end, it looks as though hes about to strike something/someone don’t seem to remember him doing anything like that in the book, unless maybe their showing him beating one of his wive/daughters for talking to the nights watch either way, greywind looks amazing, finally they can actually do some things with the direwolves this year participating in battles etc. unlike last year. I was getting really sick of looking at obvious dogs playing the direwolves, their too important to just be left out, and I’m happy they are finally attempting to show how huge and deadly looking they are, because in the books almost everyone who comes across the DWolves are terrified of it or in shock.

darquemode,
Grey Wind looks great but they cut out Stannis and Melisandre!

Katana,
Yeah, it they’re names are included with all the lead cast members. And he’s fantastic. Embodied Bronn just as I imagined him from the book!

Awesome picture! And Grey Wind looks even better in motion, 1080p and with a darker lightning! It looks so real. You can’t guess it’s CGI if you don’t know it is.
So far, Pixomondo has done a great job. I believe their work will be as good if not better than Bluebolt last year. I smile when I read old comments about the fact direwolves couldn’t be realistic, even in movies, that it would be a miracle if they weren’t too cheesy on screen… I guess we are lucky to have a production team that talented on Game of Thrones.
