George calls the Banners!

In George R.R. Martin’s latest Not A Blog entry, titled “Five Days to GAME OF THRONES dvd and blu-ray,” he gives us a small taste of one of the commentaries he voiced on the upcoming season one DVD and Blu-ray:

And George calls his own banners:

So go ye forth and grab a set or three, and let’s see if we can surprise and delight and astonish HBO and the industry with the number of DVDS sold on day one!

UPDATE by HmR: Westeros.org conducted an interview with the designer and producer company of the box set edition, Herzog and Company. As we speak, the Blu-ray/DVD of Game of Thrones tops the charts on Amazon, and there are still some days before it gets officially released. It could well be George’s wish comes true!

Fire And Blood: Five days! Well, four days now! (Plus shipping, I imagine, though I intend on grabbing one of the Blu-rays at one of the local stores as well. Christmas is coming early to der FaBenhausen!) I can’t wait to root out these freaking Dragon Eggs.

And yay, exactly one month to go till I get to watch the first ep of s2! (one day later than in the US yes…but without feeling guilty so soon after buying the S1 box set ;)

I was delighted to see a mass house banners hanging from the roof of my local DVD store here in Australia. Very exciting, I’m going to ask if they can accidently lose me a Targaryen one, because there are no Seaworth banners. I checked.

I live in the UK and my set has just now arrived. It’s due out on Monday, but has arrived early :D As did each of my brothers’ sets. So, a whopping £108.97 (about $174) has been sent on the Game of Thrones Blu-Ray sets in my household. I hope they enjoy all that money haha :P

    Hear Me Roar,

I ordered mine from Play.com, and my brothers each ordered theirs from Amazon and HMV. I just actually realised what I wrote a minute ago – my brothers’ sets haven’t actually arrived yet. I had meant to say that, as with my brothers sets it all came to £108.97 haha. Only the Play.com set has arrived though. I suspect their sets will be tomorrow or Monday (release day).

    Daniel Moitz,

Oh yes, blu ray will be higher quality for certain. It’s HD instead of standard def. So, if you’re used to watching HBO on the HD broadcast on an HD TV, the DVD will be noticeably worse quality. However, if you just have a standard definition TV DVD vs Blu-RAY doesn’t matter much.

Seriously considering canceling my Amazon order and just running out the morning of the release to pick up a copy at Best Buy or Futureshop. Amazon.ca isn’t delivering until the 8th, and is 20 dollars more than the in-store cost. Amazon.com wouldn’t guarantee a delivery before the 16th for me (even with the express delivery), so no thank you to that.

Everyone should probably tune in at 8 just in case… because right now, it has the GoT special listed (even with a description in the back of the booklet) at 8:00 and the next program doesnt’ start until 8:15!

So… either all their stuff is listed as wrong after that or they will be showing SOMETHING during that 15 minute chunk.

I just got back from watching Black Butterflies, which came out in New York today. I figured I’d go because of Carice van Houten and Liam Cunningham (Always Support the Top?). And I’m pleased to report that their performances really shone. I can’t exactly recommend this movie unless you are into biographies about artists and love and how difficult they can be. But there’s a lot of truth in it. The film is about the life of a poet during apartheid and the literary scene. It’s interesting to see how important poetry was, I suppose when all you can do is say what you mean, making it as meaningful as possible makes it all the more powerful.

I’ll confine myself to the performances as it relates to Game of Thrones: I think Liam will make a terrifically human Davos, a real crowd-favorite. And Carice will be something else as Melisandre. Multi-layered but still out of reach, human and super-human. I think she’ll be scary, but most of all for the fervor of her belief.

I’m hugely looking forward to them on the show, and if anyone has Black Butterflies on their radar, here’s the New York Times’ very favorable write up.

And if that’s not enough, Black Butterflies has Rutger Hauer as Carice’s father. Someone get him a role on Game of Thrones *cough Blackfish cough*

Oh apparently it’s available on demand, I don’t know where, and edit about to run out of time…

    Skipjack,

On that note, I just watched a 2009 film called Harry Brown starring Michael Caine, that has a few GoT’ers in it. Liam Cunningham is particularly good in it. Also stars Iain Glen and David Bradley. It was good.

I don’t recall if anyone estes has suggested this, but I’m throwing Sean Harris’ name into the Reek casting ring. Great performance by him in Harry Brown.

ETA – he was also in Red Riding with Sean Bean, so there’s the Nina Gold connection too.

    Ash,

You need to spoiler tag your comments, even if they are wrong. We never meet the real Reek in the book, we only hear about him. Ramsay switches identities with him and then the real Reek is killed (because they think he is Ramsay). We meet Ramsay posing as Reek.

    Ash,

What Goat said….and I stand by my choices. Andrew Scott’s batshit insane Moriarity
on BBC’s Sherlock would be downright terrifying as You know Who. And the actor has great range playing one of Paul Giamatti’s sons in HBO’s John Adams.

    Ours is the Fury,

Well that was a bust. I am actually hoping now to embrace the utter hilarity of HBO Canada airing the special before HBO US. It’s just something that HBO Canada would do!

Watching some of those other vids (thanks for the links!) I randomly found this interview with GRRM answering questions from facebook:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbaslypgyWk&feature=related

I assumed it’d be horrible (like that Reddit Q&A recently), but they stayed away from spoilerish questions, and George gives some pretty insightful answers. Nothing about the show, but I’m guessing about 99% of us are book readers, so I figured I’d post it.

    Joshua Taylor,

Sean Harris is great, and I’d love to get him on the show, but I think he’s a bit too old.

The difference is huge. The SD dvd is still very good but the Blu is one of the best transfers I have seen on the format.
