Saturday’s GoT Laughs: Parody

Game of Thrones Parody is still working its way through season one. Here is their parody of episode three, which they skipped during the season to keep up with the latest episodes. The final parody, episode four, is slated to be coming soon.

I’m also excited to announce that we have partnered with Foolhardy Productions and WinterIsComing.net will be the place where all the season two parodies will make their debut!

Well, would you consider it offensive if they used the n-word to describe, say, Lt. Worf on Star Trek? I mean, he’s a fictional Klingon, so is it okay? I consider it in bad form, offensive, and I didn’t want to hear the rest. My opinion, but also my right to turn the damn thing off.

    Brian,

Yes I would. Firstly because the N word originated as a racial slur so it is always offensive. Secondly because Michael Dorn is an African American so if you strip away the context of the show and consider the actor they are likely to be offended.

Midget is an English word which means a small or miniature version of something and is used in anthropology to delineate classes of smaller organisms. It can be used in a way that is not offensive. I think it is offensive to use the word midget to refer to a person with achondroplastic dwarfism. Its use in other contexts is more acceptable to me. Seeing as the hobbits in Lord of the Rings are in universe a fictional race and behind the scenes played by actors without achondroplastic dwarfism I didn’t find this usage particularly offensive. I’m not saying you are wrong to be offended by it I just wanted to clarify if you had recognized the context of this usage.

This one kind of sucked TBH. :p Disappointed, I usually like their videos.

…Also the thinly-veiled homophobia he’s got wrt Renly is a bit OTT (see also the Episode 5 vid). Hopefully if they’re gonna partner with wicnet they’ll tone that down in the future.

There is nothing homophobic about it imo. Renly was seriously emasculated in the tv version when compared to the books. Book Renly was homosexual, but not in the stereotypical way it is presented in the HBO Series.

    Brian,

I’ve never understood the problem with the word midget. I find “dwarf” to be far more offensive, as if little people are magical, bearded creatures from the world of JRR Tolkien. If I were a “dwarf”, I’d much rather be called a “midget”, because at least that word brings humankind to mind. I mean, honestly, it’s shocking to me that they prefer “dwarf” over “midget”. Very strange indeed.

When I was a kid, midget was a perfectly acceptable term, and I don’t recall any major catalyst that made it offensive. Seems to me like it’s just a part of the victim-culture that has permeated the West (i.e. every minority group has to have at least one “slur” that they take umbrage with). Everything is offensive to everyone all the time.

Bill Maher had a good idea last night; let’s set aside a day of the year in which everyone is forced to lighten up and not be offended by something they saw on TV or read on the internet. A day in which no one is forced to apologize for an off-colored joke, or something stupid that they said. A day in which everyone just moves on with their life and doesn’t give a damn. If that day ever comes, the world would be a much better place.

You know, when I was a kid we were taught, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”. Seems like we’ve flipped that on its head in today’s world. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can psychologically traumatize me and cause me emotional distress”. Not a very good message to send…

OMG you Americans are soooo over the top. You are comparing the word “nigger” (yes, yes, I wrote it, I’m a douche cause I don’t pussyfoot around and say the f-word, the n-word all the other abc-words while being a hypocrite about it in public but it’s OK to say it whilst “shooting shit” with your friends) with the word “midget” (and please don’t try to convince me otherwise, I have spent a year in Atlanta) .. Are you insane people?? I mean I can understand people who say the skit is not funny, or it’s boring or whatever but this is just bloody ridiculous… Do cut down on your TV intake, it has addled your wits..

    Varamyr Fourskins,

Moving even more off topic, but since we seem to be discussing it anyway, I’ve never understood why the term ‘little person’ is seen as more acceptable than ‘dwarf’?

I really don’t mean any offence, but to me -I’m of average height so maybe I don’t get it- ‘dwarf’ is a descriptive term whereas ‘little person’ sounds patronising.

I was under the impression, though I may be wrong, that ‘midget’ is sometimes considered offensive as it sounds like midges- tiny flies.

Edit to add- just to be absolutely clear, I’m not suggesting I know better or anything like that, it’s genuinely something I don’t understand.

Myself, not having been raised in America, I am not reflexively offended by the sight or sound of a word like “midget” or “dwarf” or “nigger” or anything else really. Words are words, they have power but not without context. Here “midget” was probably used becayse “dwarf” would have been confusing (another race altogether in that world) and ‘hobbit’ too explicit to be funny. I believe she says “dirty midgets” because impersonating the voice and point of view of Golum, not because of bigotry towards real-life human ‘little persons’.

I agree! This always strikes me here and on other blogs. I think in South America we are not as susceptible to words as you are. When you want to talk to someone and you don´t know his/her name (or you do know and then it’s a loving way of speaking) you can say nigger/black, skinny, fat, “maestro”, boss or “che” … regardless if the person is fat, thin, white, black, illiterate or unemployed. Simply doesn´t matter, it’s just a way of speaking. No one feels offended. Of course there are stupid people who use some of these words with contempt or as an insult, but is not the rule. And for midget we have just one word in spanish so no connotations whatsoever.

You have COMPLETELY missed the point. Just wow.

He is making fun of HBO for changing Renly from the fearless strapping masculine entity he was in the books to the weak terrified stereotype he became in the TV series.

This is the opposite of homophobia. It’s criticizing HBO for saying “hey, this guy’s gay? then let’s make him a total pussy!”

This was a great episode for this bit alone.

Little People have told me they find the word ‘midget’ to be the equivalent to the n-word- they just hate it. ‘Dwarf’ is a medical term; ‘midget’ is not. So I don’t use it (well, except for right now). If a certain group of people don’t want to be called something, I try to respect that. It’s common decency. As for this instance, with it being used to describe a Hobbit, well I still think the word is loaded and it’s smarter to just not use it.

I’m not crazy about this video for that reason, and for the Libertarian spiel in the beginning and especially the Catelyn comments later on, but I did really enjoy most of the other parody videos we’ve seen from seanzoz. So hopefully, the videos going forward be a little more like the earlier videos and less like this one.

I also grew up believing that “midget” was not only fair to say, but also the correct word to use when referring to a little person. In fact, “little person” and “dwarf” both seem more insulting to me for some reason. In my mind, it’s like being insulted by the word “penis” but being totally okay with “wang” or “trouser snake.”

But I’m not little, so what do I know? I’ll respect their right to be called whatever they like.

I haven’t. But then again, most of the black kids in the city I grew up haven’t either. The “arabs” (to simplify), on the other hand, probably quite more.
And I don’t think a lot of people with dwarfism have experienced that kind of distrust-based prejudice, even though they have surely faced their own shape of bigotry/stupidity.
Not everybody has the same experience, and there are people from all countries posting here, where words have different meanings and different impacts. We can share our thoughts and our viewpoints without necessarily being unenlightened or uninformed. Assuming so also makes you a generalizer.
But reversely, for someone to say “bah that word is fine, they’re too sensitive and shouldn’t be offended” of everything discounts the fact that “they” ARE being offended, so it’s only polite to take this into consideration.

As I said earlier though, it’s not the word that should sting the most, but its context and the spirit of its use. I was way more offended by Rush Limbaugh’s reasoning for calling that girl a slut (and by his very APOLOGY) than by the word itself.
Spilling mild everyday hate about or stereotyping “african-americans’ is much worse than calling someone ‘nigger’ with friendliness, in my book. But who would? Obviously in America we’re not ready for that yet.

Have you ever been wondering if your sister will be raped if the city defences didn’t hold or if the coastal batteries were too heavily damaged? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have someone armed with a gun come at your home and say “This is not your house. You have an hour to clear out” just because you are a minority? I have. Have you?
So no, I really don’t want you or anyone else to lecture people as to what is allowed, I reserve my right to speak my mind, and if there is no ill intent behind my words I expect you not to have a litter every time you hear something you THINK is derogatory. Take into consideration the context in which the word in question was said. Nowadays it is not even polite to say “black” but African-American. Will we in the EU have, in a couple of years time, Euro-Africans? Will “dwarves” be called metrically challenged? Honestly (and I don’t mean this as a pun) I don’t bloody well know what to call people in the US anymore, I am affraid that someone will misconstruct my words. As someone stated previously this PC stuff is getting out of hand, if you can get people in America to feel ashamed because they had slaves 150 years ago (IMO shameful& backward) and because of that their descendants feel obligated to mind their language… well fine by me. But do not expect the rest of the world to conform and thread ever so lightly around you because you think that the world at large owes you something or that the whole world is out to get yah. I heard the words “Degos”, “Polacks”,” Froggies” etc. thrown around your shows and tv series in abundance and the audience in comedy shows laughing uproariously when used, but amazingly not one “nigger”. But “negro” is OK to have as an option to tick off on your population census sheet, it’s not offensive at all. I mean, give me a break…

    Hollyoak,

I think this whole business with words was misunderstood. Some people are easily offended, others have their reasons. I was talking about those who have no reason to be offended when somebody use a word (or an expression) that has no offensive connotations for that person in particular.
You´re right, what do I know about the things you have to put up with. I apologize for my ignorance but here is the question: My ways are not your ways, your bad words are not the same as mine. I live in another country with quite different customs and words than yours. But, please, understand that my intention was never to offend, of course. I hope you can understand that and not assume the worst of people you don´t know. I realize that in some countries one must be careful with certain words with awful connotations but I also think I can express myself about something without monitoring my language all the time. I mean, here many people talk about the third world and say silly things and I never feel offended, I understand that is a matter of ignorance about other countries manners and that people are not malicious here and that´s it.

But what I would like is for people to respect that others have strong reactions to certain words. Your own personal experiences don’t negate other poster’s bad experiences. You may not care about the N-word, but many, many other people do.

I’m asking that everyone just show some respect for your fellow posters here. It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to not use a few words that have a lot of negative baggage.

This is just my opinion, but I think the minority groups get to pick what term they like, and then tell us that’s their preferred ‘description’, and then if we are polite, we use the term they prefer. I suppose they get together in secret conferences to decide. And terms do change over the years. I live right near Baltimore, and have black friends who will call each other the N-word with me around, yet know that I am not expected to use the same word, because I’m white. Does that really make sense, logically? No, but it’s their choice. If you’re polite, you’ll do what the specialty groups ask of you, in terms of names. If you’re not, you say and do whatever you want, and suffer the consequences of the polite people looking down their noses at you :)

Tywin Lannister puts his ‘half-man’ son on the front lines to be killed simply because he’s a ‘dwarf’ and no one reprimands HBO? Visarys sells his under aged sister to get raped by a huge Dothraki Warlord and no one curses GRRM for writing that in…? Yet Old Nan says ‘dirty midgets’ and half of this thread goes bananas…?

    How very interesting…

I wonder if ‘Wildlings’ are offended by being called Wildlings? Perhaps we should call them ‘Unconformists’ or ‘Lesscivilizedlings’… I never heard of a man of the Knights Watch refer to himself as a ‘Crow’ either come to think of it, they must find that very offensive. Goddamn you Martin for subjecting us all to this subtle bigotry. He is the First Sword of Braavos you son of a bitch not a ‘foreign bastard’ and you WILL be speaking to him with more respect.

Zach: You have COMPLETELY missed the point.

    Word.

Was gonna write the exact same thing. At least where I’m from if there is one prejudice that gays are tired of it’s the emasculation of gay guys in the media, the all gays are “sissy-boys” stereotype. If there’s anyone that can be accused of homophobia here it’s David Benioff and Dan Weiss, or whoever made the decision to take a none feminine homosexual character and make him into a stereotype.

I always was under the impression the parodies are made to be offensive. That’s part of their comedy. They often do go over the line for me, and I know they went over it for a friend of mine. That being said, I have watched them all and end up laughing at some point in all of them.
    Addressing the word “midget”:
“In some circles, a midget is the term used for a proportionate dwarf. However, the term has fallen into disfavor and is considered offensive by most people of short stature. The term dates back to 1865, the height of the “freak show” era, and was generally applied only to short-statured persons who were displayed for public amusement, which is why it is considered so unacceptable today.” from the Little People of America website FAQ.
I personally am of the belief that OUTSIDE of comedy, it takes little effort to not use a word/stereotype/slur once you know it is offensive, so I don’t tiptoe around issues but if I know something is offensive or if someone informs me something I say is offensive/ignorant I will log that away and try not to perpetuate something that could cause others distress, anger, etc.
Calmly discussing why something is offensive is often much faster and more effective than attacking someone.
Blows my mind: I just found out on the LPA page that at 4′ 10″ caused by low amounts of growth hormones I am technically a proportionate dwarf. O.O

Agreed, but it looks like they are changing that for season 2. I’m hoping they did it so that they can show Renly growing into his position as king and developing into this strong powerhouse king during Season 2. If they did it would make his death much more tramatic. Here’s to hoping.

I actually thought the book Renly was more stereotypically homosexual than the television Renly. BR is certainly much more into fashion, and Martin consistently describes him as overly showy and dramatic (silver to steel/iron, etc.). The show Renly, on the contrary, is sort of a boring average joe, not exceptionally good-looking, not even smartly dressed in the least. I was very underwhelmed in S1, NOT because he’s a pussy (who the heck knows if he is anyway? he’s untried) — but because he’s dull. Besides, gay men in pop culture are often portrayed as built, aren’t they? At least sometimes.

The more offensive part of this parody was the ending with Daenerys… eurgh. Don’t they know there are plenty of female viewers?? I mean, a period joke? Really? People may get upset about racial slurs (and I’m with them sometimes), but immature men really need to stop getting worked up over a little blood!

Interesting discussion here. As a Jewish person (secular but Jewish nevertheless) I am often offended, either directly or indirectly by things said and done about… Jews. Just a few days ago Jews were massacred in France for… well for being Jewish. Does that mean I can’t enjoy a parody about Jews? The answer is, I can and I do, but (and I quote Benjen Stark: “Nothing said before the word ‘but’ really counts”), it depends on who makes the parody, how witty it is and how far they go. Naturally, Jews making fun of Jews is easily acceptable to me, which explains Purplejilly’s mention of black-skinned people (hope this term passes as OK) in the USA calling each other ‘Nigger’ in a friendly way, where she, as a white-skinned person, can’t do so, even to black-skinned friends. Understandable. But this still doesn’t mean that we have to go Bananas over a Parodic Video, as Sword-O-Da-Mornin’, SJGim and others mentioned. I doubt there can be any formula which is 100% foolproof in that it makes everyone laugh and no one gets offended, and never will such a formula exist. The Dothraki speak a made-up language which resembles German and Arabic. Should Germans and Arabs be offended? Who can say? Maybe they should be proud… everyone sees things differently. If D&D were to constrain themselves in adapting ASOIAF to television, dreading they might offend people, well… I doubt the series would be screen-worthy. On this website we would be screaming “Murder!” if Tyrion was never called a Dwarf or the Wildling were called Unconformists (lol). So, while we should respect each other and embrace diversity, we should also remember that attempting to silence others, even if the pretext is that they are offensive towards minority groups, usually ends up badly. The whole ASOIAF series would have been banned (and we know in some societies even in this century it probably is). We don’t want to tread that path now do we? So, if you don’t like the videos and/or feel offended by them, that is understandable. My humble advice is: Stop watching them. Or watch them and react to them but just don’t get too carried away.

    Off Topic:

Game of Thrones has been aired on german free tv.
    And it sucked big time.

See, for me as a German who is able to understand the english language I really enjoyed the original version of Game of Thrones. I even loved the different accents.

Now, first: The German synchronisation sucks. It is not just the voices (Sean Beans german voice is quite good while Jorah or Roberts voice are just one dimensional – for roberts example: he just sounds like an evil drunkard. All the sadness that you can sense in Mark Addys voice as he is griefing for lyanna is gone in the german version)
but it is also the names of people and places. Kings Landing is “Königsmund” in German. Or Jon Snows name becomes “Jon Schnee” which just sounds… it just sounds way off of what you were used to know from the english version.

And the synchronisation issue is not even the worst thing. I dont even want to get startet on things they have cut. Like that Jaime vs Ned scene, many of the more brutal things are gone. Not the entire scene of course but some of the more violent scenes in it.
It is even harder to understand what is going on that way.
Especially because they air all 10 episodes in three days directly after another.
So starting friday the 23th of march, they air the last two (?) episodes today.
Starting at 20:15 to get more viewers they cut the more brutal stuff so that parents dont rage for their children seeing erotic or violent stuff at prime time.

Now this leads to a lot of hate towards the show.
I have heard people saying that this is a boring good vs evil demons series with too many names and too much sex and violence(even if half of it is cut -.-).
My very own brother (who usually enjoys fantasy as much as I do) peaked into the series at one point and turned to me today and asked me how i could watch such a bunch of bullshit, referencing to all the praises I had made of it before.

There you stand as one of those few peoples in your area who have read and watched the story in the original language and you can’t prove its awesomeness to anyone because they only see the messed up german version and call you an idiot for loving the show so much.

Still with about 10% of the averall viewership percentage for those two days on the airing of Game of Thrones it has become a success and we can await another shitty german adaption for season 2…

Man, that’s terrible michaelmann. It’s too bad a lot of potential viewers may pass on Thrones because of these poorly-synced, edited versions. Most of the younger generation in Germany understands English. Hopefully, they’ll pick up the discs.

Personally, I never watch anything that has been dubbed. I’d rather read subtitles. Unfortunately, I know a lot of American shows get exported and then dubbed, and some viewers don’t get a chance to see things in their original language.

You should find out what the word ‘phobia’ means. It means an irrational fear. Where do you get the idea that the author has an irrational fear of homosexuals? He was just parodying a scene, which WAS stupid and which DID make Renly and Loras seem more feminine than they were in the books. If you want to take issue with someone, take issue with the screenwriter who wrote the original scene. It sure wasn’t in the book.

It seems to me he was so grossed out by the idea of a gay blow job that he had to hit skip on the remote. This reads like irrational fear to me, like having to skip the scary scenes in a horror movie. YMMV.

Since he’s already demonstrated he’s got an “ewww gayyys are groooosss” feeling about Renly+Loras, this attempt to parody Renly also rubbed me the wrong way. Not to mention it wasn’t even funny (a much worse offense)! And I would totally overlook it if, like the ep 5 parody, there were other scenes in the parody that were funny! But there weren’t.

Why would it be irrational fear that a heterosexual individual would be grossed by a gay blow job? Are you saying that a heterosexual should enjoy watching homosexual acts, or otherwise this individual is a homophobe? Are you saying that everyone who isn’t bisexual has an irration fear?

Being grossed out at the very idea of homosexual acts is homophobic, yeah. And this is an irrational fear (you’re not in any danger but have a visceral negative reaction to it). Obviously you don’t have to be turned on by it (I’m not turned on by any of the sex in aGoT, TBH!), but there’s a lot of space between “not turned on” and “EWW LOOK AWAY LOOK AWAY!”

    userj,

So basically you’re a homosexual that took offense? Got it…

Being a straight male I can say that I personally find it offensive (lol at people that get offended over a joke) that I MUST like or tolerate without opinion or feeling the visualization and audible sound of homosexual intercourse lest I be branded as ‘Immature’ or ‘Homophobic’. I find homosexual interaction as inherently uncomfortable to watch or hear (inherently meaning, part of my programming, not learned, nothing I can or would want to do about it) as a homosexual might view his own sexual orientation (part of his programming, not learned, nothing he could or would want to do about it).

I respect the right for adults to do whatever they wish as long as they truly aren’t hurting anyone (e.g. No Aztec sacrificing innocent virgins for the sun god) and I also have always and will always treat people of all types and walks of life with respect and keep personal opinions that they may find offensive to myself. I expect in return the FREEDOM to feel the way I feel about it and not be labeled a derogatory term simply because I don’t personally like seeing or am not ‘comfortable’ seeing or hearing a man slobber on another man’s knob..

I pray to the Gods you see the logic here…
What? There is only one God and his name is HomosexualMan.. And there is only one thing we say to HomosexualMan… Not today…

Seems like I’m in the minority, but I just wanted to say that I personally enjoyed all the parodies tremendously. Oh, and that includes period jokes. A parody is not meant to be ‘mature’ and you’re not meant to judge it by the same standards you’d otherwise use in day to day behavior, when of course it’s only common sense to be mindful of the words you use. I don’t mind stereotyping in comedy; I might not find it funny, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt offended. There isn’t a single person on earth who’s not part of a group that’s subject to stereotyping. I don’t see the Irish or the Polish (just to name a few randomly) jumping out of their seats every time this happens.
Oh well, it all comes down to cultural differences again, I guess. Which, in the end, is one of the reasons this place is so interesting to come back to.

I liked how they made fun of how different Renly is in the book and in the show. The rest was meh.

After DBZ abridged, most parodies of shows seems stale to me

    Bemma,

Yes, Renly has an interest in fashion and maybe he is a bit flamboyant but he isn’t portrayed as a sissy nor feminine. At least that’s not how I viewed when reading the books.

    Sword-O-Da-Mornin’,
Nope, not gay. In fact I even got called out by an actual gay person for being oversensitive. ;)

Look. No one can help how they feel about something at a visceral level. That – as Virtus pointed out – is the definition of a phobia. It’s IRRATIONAL. It’s an fear of something that can bring you no harm. If you viserally are grossed out by gay sex, that’s not your fault – you’re a product of your culture, same as everyone. However I think it’s worth examining why you feel that way. Plus, we can learn to control our other irrational fears (snakes, spiders, etc), so why not this one?

At the very least, we can try not to constantly shove in other people’s faces how gross we consider their behavior. When I go to a sandwich shop I don’t go out of my way to tell every patron that the mayo they have on their food makes me want to gag. I realize that my hatred of mayo is personal and irrational. What’s the point in being a dick about it?

    userj,

Funny how you italicize and capitalize words like “IRRATIONAL”!!! AHHHH!!! and “phobia” ouuuuuu… But leave oh so understated words like (shhhhhh whisper now) “fear”… *ehem* Without fear there is no phobia… I doubt anyone here that is uncomfortable with male on male sexcapades checks their closet at night for lurking homosexuals (oh no I didn’t *slaps own wrist)… Indeed that would be IRRATIONAL!!!

I mean, you’re a mayophobe that homosexuals tell to lighten up who thinks there is no rational reason to fear snakes, spiders, falling boulders, cancer, aids, stupidity, who knows what else… Why am I even talking to you 0.O…?

I don’t think that’s what Userj was saying at all. Of course fear without fear wouldn’t be fear, it would not be anything. Just like a house without a house wouldn’t be a house. What Userj is saying is that these irrational fears that people often have, are the byproducts of a society which has isolated them into categories of threatening obstacles. Categories that don’t match up to their actual threat.

Being enclosed in a small room isn’t going to cause any harm, but it might feel like it will. Could this be a byproduct of thousands of years of scary stories that involved innocent people being crushed or starved to death in close tight spaces?

The chances of actually running into a spider that could cause you any real physical harm is very slim. Yet many people scream every time they run into a spider. These are all Irrational fears. Just like your homophobia. Just because two men are having sexual relations on the television, doesn’t mean anything harmful will happen to you; and I’m sure that you fully realize it.

By the way, Userj never mentioned anything about falling boulders, cancer, AIDs or stupidity.

Didn’t spot anything I considered overly offensive (and I would rank LotR over ASoIaF actually). I just think those so-called parodies are usually somewhat lame. Calling Catelyn a dumb whore? Where’s a amazingly funny joke in that? And Old Nan’s “rant” wasn’t funny either, in my opinion.
The only thing I liked was how they poked fun at the Renly from the book getting character assassinated and being replaced by the softie show version. Apart from that, the video was just lame, in my opinion.
