The clash of kings has begun in earnest. Who wants Stannis for their king? Comments Bex:

Sure enough, he has got several brownie points in my book by being observant of grammar (courtesy of Internet Webcomic):

Speaking of kings and leaders of men … the admins of this site have decided that the commenters are mature enough to handle some political humour. Salty Sea Dog,
I understand the slight irritation at the lack of a peach, but I reckon it all just comes down to practicality. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the process of filmmaking, so excuse my tone if it comes across as slightly patronizing: Eating a piece of fruit on camera is probably the most difficult thing to do in terms of continuity, as you’d have to keep replacing the fruit after every take and making sure it has the same bites in the same places as last time. And the thing with a peach is, they’re sloppy; meaning it’d dribble all down his hands, and the bites are soft and varied, as opposed to, say, an apple’s crisp and clear bite marks. It’s just more hassle than it’s worth, to be honest. Just about the only time you’ll get people eating fruit on camera is when they’re shooting with multi-cameras (like a soap, or a docu-drama). It’s much easier to eat stuff in a plate or bowl, as it’s not constantly in view so if you’re one vegatbale or spaghetti down, nobody is likely to notice.

Challenge: any creatives out there that want to do something similar for politicians from their own country? (or other famous people; e.g. Rupert Murdoch in the UK) In most countries the political spectrum is much wider than in the US, so there’s lots of potential to be found I’m sure.

The political ones are, I understand, a bit risky, hence the WiC admin comments . In order to better understand those who are offended by this kind of humor, especially on a website that doesn’t normally post political humor, I try to put myself “in the shoes” of a politically-minded American. What if these were about my own country, my own politicians? Much as I can’t stand politicians in my country (Israel) and much of our politics in general, I might have been offended if they were shown in this light here. Yes, I would probably have laughed even harder and shared them with all my friends, but would I have felt a bit worried this sight is becoming anti-Israeli or anti this or that party/politician from Israel? Good question… probably at least a wee bit. On the other hand, the US is the “birthplace” of GoT (GRRM, D&D, HBO) and the admin himself is American so it makes sense that the politicians of the US are compared to GoT characters (maybe… just a thought). I am very liberal and pretty much anything which is meant to cause people to laugh is fine by me, as long as it is not 100% tasteless (making fun of politicians, ANY politicians is NOT on that list). Hope you guys don’t get flamed or have a bucket with a rat inside strapped to your chest.

Balon Greyjoy is paired with Ron Paul, a member of the House of Representatives and Republican presidential hopeful.
As for political comparisons in other countries, I reckon Lysa Arryn and chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany would make a great pairing. Angie’s been nursing her junior coalition partner FDP for far too long now and, she’s forcing non-performing EU partners into penalty boxes with the economic abyss of state bankruptcy on one side.
Other pairings: Patchface + Berlusconi, Drogo + Putin, Stannis + Netanyahu?

Haha, thanks! I know it sounds kinda weird, but it really is how the process works. I was in a film recently where there was a scene in the kitchen where we were eating cereal. The director wanted us to drop the cereal eating because it was gonna mess with continuity too much (not even how much cereal was in the bowl, but simply remembering when we were taking the spoonfuls and with what hands, etc). He thought it was more hassle than it was worth. But, for whatever thespian reason, I really championed the cereal-eating, as I thought it was necessary to show us doing stuff rather than just standing around talking. I promised I’d remember at which points I took the mouthfuls of cereal and he let us do it! Haha.
Later in the filming there was some pizza-eating going on and that was a bit of a nightmare in terms of making sure the bites were at the right point during the conversation.
To explain a bit more… continuity is necessary because we’ll have a close shot of Person A eating the pizza; a close shot of person B speaking to pizza-eater; and then a two-shot, with both actors in shot. The two-shot will (usually) be shot at a different time to shots A and B (think about it; otherwise, you’d have the back of another camera-man’s head in shot) and so the pizza quantity and timings of said pizza eating will need to match up in the close and two-shot. That’s why eating on camera is such a faff; particularly fruit eating! :)

Continuity is a nightmare to manage, period. It’s not just eating. It’s the angle of a head, the movement of an arm, etc. The viewer often won’t see exactly what is wrong when a body part jumps, but will feel off.
It helps to have multiple cameras if you are shooting the same person from two angles, but you often don’t have that luxury.
It’s one reason why there’s a very real difference between stage acting and movie acting. Stage acting involves projecting your voice, demonstrative movements, some improv if people miss a line, and some flexibility.
Movie acting is being quieter and moving less — the camera is often tight so it’s toning down even natural expressions. It’s hitting your mark, being able to repeat your performance over and over, and not moving so you don’t go out of frame.

Ok, I hate to say it, but these are extremely lame. Especially the political ones. As a general rule, comparisons of Game of Thrones characters to contemporary politicians should be avoided because they’re a good way to piss off people on the other side of the aisle (the administrator can hide behind the fact that he/she doesn’t live in the US, but these are obviously slanted very far to the left). And for those laughing, know that it’s pretty easy to just turn it around. Instead of comparing Obama to Robb Stark, I’d say he’s more like Cersei, who has proven to be a completely incompetent leader, especially in A Feast for Crows, and also has a nasty mean streak toward her political enemies. What? That annoys some of the liberal readers on this site? Good. That was the point. Just stick to the show. I really think this feature should be suspended, and only the episode parodies should be posted.

Yup. Sounds like a nightmare (or a major challenge). I am a stills photographer and I know how hard it is to just get 1 good stills frame. Try and make a good HDR (High Dynamic Range) image using 2 or 3 images of the same scene taken at different exposures. Even THAT is much harder than people might think. Yes, it’s just 2 or 3 shots of the same thing with awesome software to combine the images. But (and again, as Lord Stark mentioned: “Anything said before the word ‘but’ is meaningless”), if the camera moves but a fraction, a light breeze moves the vegetation but a fraction, etc. and already you start having major issues with “ghosting” and other effects. I shudder at the thought of how difficult it must be to do it in a TV scene take with all that goes around. These people are pros and I admire them.

If you can’t find humor in your own dogma, political or religious or whatever, then you’re just one step away from book burnings and re-education camps.

I like Romney as Stannis, Sarah as Dany, and Balon as Paul. Not so sure about the others but I especially think the Tyrion Colbert thing is beyond stupid.
I’ll offer, hopefully trying to be non partisan although might favor the right a little bit:
Obama = Joffrey
Biden = Tyrion
Rahm = Littlefinger
Newt = Robb Stark
Dubya = Ned
Cheney = Cat
Condi = Brienne
Patreaus = Jeor Mormont
Pelosi = Cersei
Harry Reid = Pycelle
Trump = Mace Tyrell
Colin Powell = Karstark
Arlen Specter = Frey
Hamid Karzai = Craster
Ghadaffi, Saddam, Assad, Mubarak = Ghiscari
Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger is an almost perfect fit for Robert Baratheon in so many ways.
I honestly think though that just about any Ice and Fire character would be a Republican because they live in a harsher world and politically the characters are typically realists rather than idealists.
If anyone’s interested in any of those I can explain them.

ROTFL @ Obama as Joffrey. GTFO.
Very curious if there’s anyone you’d equate with Renly.
As far as Ice and Fire characters generally being Republican – probably so. Which is why Westeros is such a mess and a place I would never want to live in. On that same level, the Middle Ages were probably predominantly Republican in mentality. We’ve come a long way since then.

I agree, though, Colbert makes no since as Tyrion (But Biden makes less sense, he just isn’t that crafty).
Still don’t agree with any of the Bush suggestions…
maybe:
Kevan-George
Tywin – Jeb
but still not perfect…

skipdutch,
Biden is Tyrion because he’s Joff’s right hand, his big mouth always gets him in trouble, but he’s actually a pretty skilled and crafty political operative, without ever really getting very much credit.
I think Bush is just about right for Ned – his strict moral code can leave him ill equipped to deal with changing circumstances, he and Cheney/Cat start a war on bad information, he loses favor with the public towards the end of his regime despite initial popularity, and he occasionally treats would-be allies the way Ned treats the Lannisters. If you believe he nailed Ashara Dayne or that he fathered Jon then you can take that as evidence of a wild youth and sober adulthood. Plus he’ll be endorsing Romney/Stannis.
Maybe Ted Kennedy for Tywin?
John GQuote Reply
Jay Sutherland,
Everything you say is true, but continuity actually wouldn’t have been much of an issue in this case. If you watch the end of the scene between Stannis and Renly, you will notice that it only consists of alternating close-ups (earlier in the parley there is much more variety as far as the cameras are concerned).
Peach continuity becomes much simpler when there are no consecutive shots of Renly (it’s realistic that the peach could move while the camera is on Stannis) so if Renly had just pulled out a peach near the end, it wouldn’t have been difficult to pull off.
Besides all that, this show does not shy away from food and drink in the first place. Tyrion is pretty much always drinking (or pouring) and there have been plenty of scenes centered around feasts or dinner tables. In those cases the food is just there for the sake of added interest and realism, and yet they removed the one food item that was symbolic and actually conveyed a great deal of meaning. Personally that peach scene has always been the most memorable Renly moment for me, so more than anything I was just surprised that it wasn’t included.
It’s not a change that I’m super upset by since it doesn’t affect the overall story (unlike some other changes) but it is a change that I find very bewildering. Instead of Stannis being haunted by that peach, I guess he’ll be haunted by a ham joke?
Visual memory in humans is extremely powerful (which is why people use tricks like visualizing items on grocery lists instead of just trying to memorize the words) and this visual memory doesn’t just apply to things we’ve seen, but things we imagine (often fictitious or absurd visual memories are the most powerful and last the longest). I think the reason that the peach is such a big deal to so many people is that we feel like we’ve seen it (even though we only read about it) and we can perfectly understand how Stannis would be unable to get that image out of his head. It may not be a critical plot device, but I think that peach could have created some very memorable imagery for new viewers (instead of just being a nod to readers).
Alas, our minds have instead been imprinted with the image of Ros and that Baratheon sceptre!
FanderayQuote Reply
purplejilly,
the problem with being passionate about something is that in large doses it can easily lead to a clouding of judgement… And not only in politics of course. Take for instance fans of ASOIAF: some are so passionate about the books (which in itself is well ok) that they don’t want to see any changes made in the tv series, even though the two mediums are so different that some changes are necessarry to do the original story justice (a fact that they will be unable to accept, hence the ‘clouding of judgement’). In my personal opinion, a lack of a sense of humour concerning one’s passion might be an indicator that passion has transgressed beyond the desirable and is heading towards zealotism…
One of my favourite quotes of all time is “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts”. (this doesn’t just apply to politics, for me personally it’s also a very important principle in my work as a scientist) Sadly, if there is one area in dayly life where this principle is often disregarded it is politics, especially so during election campaigns…
Well yes, let’s just leave it at that :-)

Yeah, when the comparisons are funny and kind of accurate it’s one thing, but the thing about that photo which is annoying to people on the right is that one of the only three things they have for Obama/Robb is “probably the best” which is to say “well, we like him the best, and we like this guy on the show so they’re the same.” The comparison is pretty weak and not that funny when you only make it because you think they’re both the good guys.
