Zack, same here. I guess they are running late and aren’t live yet? I talked to Bryan today and he told me he was going to be on, so hopefully it will be up soon.

I hope it meant that i can ask a question to bryan cogman here :)
Hello Mr. Cogman, just wanted to tell you that you wrote “What is Dead May Never Die” brilliantly. I particularly liked the scenes with Sansa cause we don’t get to see her in these particular situations in the books, and yet you managed to capture her spirit and sense of having the walls pressing down on her really well! (hope that makes sense).. But as a huge Sansa/Sandor fan i just wanted to ask you about what you said regarding these 2 this season and how their relationship will play out a little diffrently from the books. If you could please hint at this i’m sure there are many San/San fans who would be grateful. will we still get the feeling that this is going to be a potential romantic relationship in the show or will it just be a sort of guardian protecting the weak sort of thing?
Thanks so much,
Cheers from Mexico
Carolina Herrera Padilla :)

You actually have to ask your question in the Ustream chat widget, embedded in the post above. But the show hasn’t actually started yet anyway, so stick around and hopefully you can ask again in the chat. :)

Winter Is Coming,
Great interview with him btw. Just read it a few minutes ago. Seems like a cool cat from that interview and watching the episode in S01 where he commentated with Kit.

Sorry – do these people even know what they’re talking about?

Appreciated BigRed’s questions about whether or not it was Damphair who was baptising Theon in this latest episode. They guy looked right for the part. Alas official word from Bryan that IT IS NOT DAMPHAIR.
ZackQuote Reply
Well, drat! I missed this because I was re-watching the episode on HBO at 11 PM Eastern. Pfft.
Or… maybe I didn’t miss it.

Carolina H,
Hiya. Thanks for your question. I just meant that it plays out a bit differently since LF gave the info instead of Hound… but that the relationship is still explored.

B Cogman,
Fun interview, Bryan! I was happy to see you like the Dorne storyline, one of my favorites as well. Hopefully, it will make its way into the show. “What is Dead May Never Die” is already one of my favorite episodes of the entire series, so kudos!
I’ve got a question: are you guys planning to (Books 3/4 spoilers)use Balon and Yara next season as well? Or will they be gone until their subplot kicks off? Well, Yara’s, mostly

B Cogman,
Thanks for the answers to my questions Bryan, forgive the name TarrisKalldron (0ld youtube name), rather use the legit. I have to say your writing of you episodes are extremely good given your constraints to budget, 10 episode limit, etc. I figured the audiobooks did not influence your writing but they really are spectacular. They allowed me to follow this book series at least 3 times with a very heavy lifestyle of work and school (driving, mindless data entry, laundry, etc) and Dotrice being in the Guiness World Book for his excellent narration for the most characters ever purely on this book is amazing. I really recommend, assuming you aren’t sick of the material yet, experiencing these this way, I can’t read them now after listening to them in this fashion.
Also hook us up with the link to your brother’s album recently released.

I was being a little sneaky with that Martell question, I admit, but the answer provided a cool insight into the thought process of what’s important to concentrate on now and what to hold back on. So thanks, Mr. Cogman. ‘Twas a fun chat overall.

Can I get an edited version with just Bryan’s lines? The interviewers…just ask the questions. Stop sucking up. Stop offering your point of view. This is why I hate podcasts an all this. It’s like the Internet gives people permission to suck at this stuff and not care.

SPOILER? Have Meera and Jojen been cut?

Thought the interviewvers did fine. If you dont like people offering their views mabe you shouldnt offer yours?
It was quite interesting. Provided some nice insights into how they work on the show. Liked Cogmans enthusiasm and honesty.

Nice to hear Bryan explain his thinking behind the Sansa/Shae scene, which was very much as I experienced it, though a lot of viewers and reviewers seem to have understood it quite differently. Personally, I was deeply moved by this scene. It was subtle and funny but properly painful, especially in the context of that hideous dinner. Those two scenes together were probably my highlight of the episode – and that was a bloody good episode.

When I see how funny and entertaining Bryan is, I kind of understand why the writing in this show is so goddamn good.

Just watched it on youtube. Very cool! I sooooo want Bryan’s job…
Bryan also just went straight to the top of my “people i want to sit down and have a beer with” list. For one he seems like a really nice and cool dude, and also i would love to pick his brain for some of the info that he obviously cant comment on in public.

That was a really funny and great interview, liked it very much. Pretty good questions, too. Now I think everyone could better understand some of the changes and see that a lot of thoughts went into them, just like the Hot Pie cry. They don’t drop those things without reasons.

I liked that the hosts were so enthusiastic. It made me feel enthusiastic, and I started watching at 7:30am (a time of the day when I don’t feel enthusiastic about anything).
Varamyr FourskinsQuote Reply
Bryan was excellent — he’s always very talkative and can run with things even when not asked. And I will give credit to the show for having the outlet to ask good questions — the skype/youtube comments made for quality questions and commentary. It was not your typical mainstream interview in that sense and that’s a good thing. The Producer who couldn’t pronounce the names had some really excellent questions.
That said — and I apologize to the hosts for the manner in which I said it — the interviewing technique could use significant improvement. The fawning is ridiculous and unnecessary. Bryan is obviously a talented guy, but the constant agreement or restatement of what he just said is unnecessary. At several points the hosts interrupted the interviewee — while he was explaining his thought process — to basically tell him what they thought of his thought process.
I have no problems with lively or exuberant hosts. I have no problem with third part analysis. But in an interview, the focus should be on the interviewee. Save your commentary for later; don’t interrupt someone of whom you’ve just asked a question.
The result of interviewing with the focus on the person being interviewed is a better interview. You only get some much time with someone who either makes the key decisions or is there when they are made. There’s so many great things to ask and understand with someone like Bryan that the focus should be on good questions, follow up questions and letting him talk.
A perfect example: even Bryan was questioning if the helmet gambit worked at the end. Instead of asking him why he felt it might not work, or what his thought process was, why they did it, or even leading a bit with “do the Lannisters buy it?”…
They basically told him it totally worked in a fannish manner. The Chris Farley method of interviewing really doesn’t work well. Bryan just happens to be a great interviewee (because he’s honest and open and talks).
AlanQuote Reply
good interview, but annoying the interviewers all talked simultaneously so it comes out as white noise several times. I appreciate their enthusiasm though.
P.S. Hey Cogman, it’s Damp-hair, not Dam-phair! ;-)
spacechampionQuote Reply
In regards to the historical relations between characters that was discussed… I’ve come up with a theory relating ASOIAF to the events of Ragnarok from Norse Mythology. I’m not going to get into that here (it’s lengthy and spoilers abound), but I’ll give you a little sampling, if anyone cares to check it out for themselves:
Bloodraven = Loki
Bran = Fenrir
Hodor = Hodr
Jon Snow = Surtr
Dany = Jormungandr
Jaime = The Æsir (Tyr, Heimdahl, Thor, Freyr, Odin)
Of course, I’m probably very, very wrong about that, but the symbolism is all there if you read deep enough into it.

spacechampion,
Yes, a few people have pointed that out. I might vote to change it to my way when/if the time comes… otherwise people will think it’s a nickname due to his… well… damp hair.

Kinda disappointing hearing how proud he was of the letter burning sequence. It’s not completely horrible, but apart from being not particularly creative as a movie gesture, it makes little sense in a pre-”federal”-mail world… I mean, how would he have sent the letter to Robb anyway? It’s not like Balon’s Maester would just have sent off a raven without reading the letter (and transcribing it in a smaller hand on a smaller paper) and I doubt Theon himself is capable enough at rookeryto be able to send the raven himself. It’s nitpicky, I know, and it didn’t particularly disturb me, as it really isn’t that big a deal, but it’s also a strange thing to be proud of, since it’s little more than a barely-okay-crutch.
I would have thought that there were plenty of other things in this episode to be more proud of.

spacechampion,
So he really did say it like that? I went all wtf and then thought I must have misheard. I like Cogman a lot but the Dam-phair mistake takes him down a peg for me. No biggie of course… unless that mistake actually turns up in the show later on. Then it will be eternal facepalm Mr Cogman!
Ser LurkalotQuote Reply
Everyone makes mistakes, and the Dam-phair is one of the most common ones. I’ll admit, I made the same mistake on my first reading (11 years ago) and so did many of my friends! Even the “keeper of the mythos” is fallible. :D
Let’s just be glad we caught this mistake before it ended up in the show.

Lex,
Exactly. Everyone reads things differently. I always read Cersei as “Kersay”, not “Sercy” and Jaime as “Jayme”, not “Jaymy”.

No, Lurkalot’s right. It’s unforgivable. I’m stepping down effective immediately. Maybe they’re looking on THE BORGIAS…
