HBO has a giveaway running right now (open to US and UK residents only) that is pretty cool. You can enter for a chance to win crowns featured on Game of Thrones! The grand prize winner takes home Robert Baratheon’s crown, as seen in season one, while the 1st place winner gets Joffrey’s crown, as seen in seasons one and two.
Just submit your email at the contest page to be entered. You can enter once per day, until the contest ends on May 7th. The contest is open to US residents only, however there is a similar contest running for UK residents. Good luck!

Don’t know about other countries, but I clicked the link and was taken to a UK version- this one with Robert’s crown as the ‘grand prize’ and Renly’s as ’1st place prize’.

Um… does that mean those crowns will be “no longer needed” by the end of the season? It would suck if HBO spoiled a big shocker or two by raffling off props for characters who won’t be appearing in Season 3+. Then again, maybe there are multiple copies of each crown and they’re just giving out the extras, or maybe some characters get new crowns after a while (I can picture Joffrey switching to one with a lion instead of antlers).

I always thought the ancient Egyptian crown (the Pschent) was pretty cool (not necessarily in look, but in concept).
Prior to the unification of the country, there were two pharaohs, one in Upper Egypt and the other in Lower Egypt, who each had their own crown; the White Hedjet Crown and the Red Deshret Crown, respectively. Upon unification, these two crowns were literally combined to create the Pschent (i.e. the Hedjet was basically stacked on top of the Deshret to symbolize a united Egypt).
So, what does that tell us? Even 5,000 years ago, politicians were cunning propagandists.

I would participate if only the privacy policy provided on that website wasn’t so absolutely cheesy. It basically says that your personal information may or may not be shared to outside parties who may or may not have anything to do with the promotion and that the site has no control over how such information is used by those third parties who may or may not have access to the information you provide. In other words, giving them your email is like writing it on the bathroom stall door. If you think it’s worth it to trade your email to practically anyone for a small chance at a crown, then go for it. For me, it’s not remotely worth the hassle of a constantly stuffed spam folder in my email.

And yeah I agree that the concept is cool, it only shows that politics is the second oldest trade in the world, and also that it contains a number of traits from the oldest one :)
But I hope that HBO will stop discriminating against those of us who happen to live outside the Lalaland, cause they sure like our money when it comes to paying them every month, then we are seen as “valued members of the HBO family”.. -.-
