Casting

Leaked audition tape confirms Edmure Tully will be cast

A leaked audition tape gives us confirmation that Edmure Tully will (finally) be appearing in the series. The audition, dug up by The Rabbit, shows Irish actor Tom Sullivan reading the casting sides for Edmure.

We’ve had leaked audition tapes in the past (including from someone who actually went on to become cast in the show), but this one is noteworthy because it confirms the existence of a character that has heretofore gone unmentioned on the show. Edmure, the brother of Catelyn Stark, appears way back in the first book, but he was cut from both seasons one and two, leaving some fans fearing we would never see him. Well, fear no more!

Winter Is Coming: After years of waiting, you House Tully fans finally have a reason to celebrate! We will definitely get an Edmure and probably get to see Riverrun. I suspect we may get a Hoster Tully too. Still, one question remains, what about the Blackfish?

  • Edmure is vital to certain events, unfortunately the Blackfish isn’t really vital so I can see HBO leaving him out.

  • I never doubted it for a minute. (wipes sweat off brow as she breaths a sigh of relief)

    ETA:

I’m sure the Blackfish will be cast as well.

  • Hell yes!
    That was my first reaction!

I still could not get to whom he suppose to talk in the take. It is not Robb, I think, because he is reffering to him as his nephew.
Could it be Hoster ? Blackfish? Some bannerman? I was confused a bit (or did not perhaps understand) the mention of sisters being held by Tywin. Whose sisters?

  • The Rabbit: I still could not get to whom he suppose to talk in the take. It is not Robb, I think, because he is reffering to him as his nephew.

Robb is his nephew though. Unless I’m confused about what you are trying to say. (I haven’t been able to watch the video yet.)

  • Great news! Hopefully we’ll get a Lord Hoster Tully and the Blackfish.

I’m already imagining in my head the amazing scene of Lord Hoster’s funeral.

  • Great! I hoped Edmure would keep his role from the books, looks like he will. And from what little we’ve seen, he’s as in the book.

    The Rabbit,

I think he was talking to two characters, Robb and a Stark bannerman (probably the Greatjon).

  • OK, I will forgive no-naked-NCW if I can have the Blackfish sparring with Jaime over good-as-dead Edmure.

  • Remaal,

    Winter Is Coming,

Yes, at first I thought that there were two different scenes.
At the beginning it is obviously not Robb – the character X says something like Robb is your King. It could be Hoster of Blackfish or Cat. If it is Hoster – then they made him younger and obviously much healthier.
Cat – hmm possible – but it is too much war tactics going on in this conversation.
But for me , it definitely sounds like Blackfish enraged with his nephew.

  • I’m betting we get Edmure but I think they’ll just skip Lord Hoster (probably mention his death, but that’s about it). When Edmure is introduced he’ll probably already be Lord of Riverrun. Blackfish could be a great opportunity to take a really cool but far from essential character and expand his role somehow.

  • Yellow Dog,

I’m still hoping a certain bath scene will be in!

Definitely want the Blackfish cast though. I hope we get Hoster too, though I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he does little more than mumble ‘tansy’ and die.

  • ohboy, I’ve watched the tape and it looks like they’re going to get deep into the Riverrun sub-plot. Obviously Robb is the second voice (he has my sisters), but I can’t remember from the book if the lines of the first voice about Edmure screwing up were from the Greatjon or the Blackfish. Not that the book would stop D&D from putting those lines in the mouth of whoever works best for the show.

    Not that I’m complaining, D&D!

  • The Rabbit,

I think it’s the Greatjon or other Bannerman + Robb in this reading. Didn’t really sound like Cat.

Great find, by the way! : )

  • I’d put in Blackfish before Hoster. I’m sure now that we’ve got the Tullys, the most anticipated fish of all will get his grand appearance.

  • I’m so excited to see who they cast as Edmure! I also find the dedication of the team and HBO to this series to continue to be top caliber. That almost all the episodes are scripted for next season AND the casting has already begun while the 2nd season is still in progress makes me very, very happy.

  • I think I’d rather have Strong Belwas than any of these fish.

Kidding aside I’m glad we get Edmure. Just seeing any new characters come to life is going to be a treat.

  • awesome – great news indeed.

I also think it’s premature as book readers to assume the Blackfish will not play an integral role in the future…whenever GRRMs characters go unaccounted for, they tend to resurface in awesome ways…

  • Not that I’m any kind of expert, but I didn’t think Tom Sullivan adequately conveyed Edmure’s combination of arrogance and incompetence.

I’m afraid I’ve become quite intolerant of less-than-top-notch acting, and it’s D&D’s fault!

  • These are good news!
My personal belief all along was that the Tullys were simply postponed; they’re a tad too important with regards to certain plot points to be omitted entirely, and I’m happy to hear that it turns out to be right! Giddy already!

  • SillyMammo,

In the books the Blackfish was absolutely necessary because he made it possible to believe that Robb (13 yrs old) was capable of leading an army and winning battle after battle against the Lannisters.

In the show Robbs character is much older, and played with such conviction by Richard Madden, the Blackfish wasn’t totally necessary to make Robb’s character development believeable.

I really hope Edmure is as clueless and foolhardy in the show as he is in the books. I’d hate to see D & D combine the two and give Edmure some of the Blackfish’s character traits.

  • Cool, but meh.

I’m ALWAYS happy to hear about things/characters from the books that were questionable at first but will indeed appear in the show, but Tully scenes in the books always bored me terribly, especially those pre AFFC.

Never understood the raging Blackfish fans.

With all that said, I think Henry Ian Cusick would make a decent Edmure.

  • I think the decision not to include Riverrun is a brilliant one now. A good portion of Robb’s season 3 storyline will be at Riverrun. If we spent all of Season 2 and Season 3 at Riverrun, it may have gotten tiresome. This way, it’s as if the war is still evolving, rather than stagnant.

  • All hail the Floppy Fish!

Blackfish will show up sooner or later, I think, if only because his scene where he trolls the shit out of Jaime will be really popular among viewers

  • This is huge. This is from ASOS Catelyn II. This is when Robb first introduces Jeyne as his wife: “I took her castle and she took my heart.” (and if D&D omit that line may The Seven weep for them, BTW).

This is clearly an adaptation of the exchange between Robb, Edmure and … wait for it … The Blackfish! Book people, go to the end of ASOS Catelyn II. It sticks out like a sore thumb. “The Blackfish said, ‘You were commanded to hold Riverrun, Edmure, nor more.’ ” While the wording of the dialogue has been changed, the essence is identical. I think, maintain, and hope that the third character is none other than The Blackfish.

  • Right.
I re-listened to the audition tape once more.
The first part sounds like Stark bannerman (I whish it was GreatJon -miss him so much in S2)
    The second is definitly Robb.

  • The Rabbit,

It’s actually a scene from the book. It’s when Robb and Blackfish return to Riverrun to find that Edmur defied their instructions and engaged the Lannister host at the crossing.

  • The Blackfish will be cast. He still has a role to play, a significant one I would guess, in book 6 and possibly 7. So just in case the show survives that long, they will cast him.

  • Not having read the books, I don’t know what significance Cat’s family has for the coming plot developments. However, it did strike me as odd that there’s a war raging in the Riverlands without us ever seeing any Tullys except Cat and Lisa (who’s remained neutral). Isn’t the whole “King IN the North” business about the Riverlands trying to secede along with the Starks and their bannermen?

The only Tully bannermen we’ve seen so far are the Freys. Old Walder wasn’t particularly impressed by Cat’s appeal to his oath to her family, so she had to negotiate arranged marriages.

Perhaps there simply wasn’t enough screen time or budget to include more Riverlands characters in season 2. However, I can’t see Robb’s war with the Lannisters coming to a conclusion without the Tullys, whose territory will be divvied up unless one side or the other scores some decisive victories.

  • Interesting change from the books (Obviously this may be a preliminary bit): in the books, Robb and the Blackfish are berating Edmure for stopping TYWIN and preventing TYWIN from running right into Robb’s trap. Here in the tape, the quotes are about how Robb wished to trap the MOUNTAIN. I suspect this has a lot to do with Tywin’s itinerary being changed, but still…..it’s an odd change….it’s not like taking the Mountain would do much to the Lannisters and the Mountain couldn’t exactly be ransomed for anything.

  • I’m glad they’re building the Stark relatives. I get the sense that the Starks will eventually rely heavily on surviving relatives and die hard allegiances, like the Manderly’s. I wouldn’t rule out the Blackfish just yet, but I don’t know if we’ll see him next season. The Reeds are still intact as ally correct? I’m not harping about Meera and Jojen, but just wanting to confirm that the Reeds are still a strong ally.

  • YES! More Tullys! Hope this means we get to see Riverrun next season. HBO don’t forget the Reeds either! We need Meera and Jojen!

  • Has Catelyn even mentioned Edmure up to this point? I know Riverrun’s been mentioned. It’s going to be kind of weird to introduce this new brother that’s never been mentioned before, just in time for him to get captured at the Red Wedding.

  • Methinks you hit the nail on the head here:

Nagga’s Kin: Perhaps there simply wasn’t enough screen time or budget to include more Riverlands characters in season 2.

  • The Rabbit,

    Great job!!!

So glad Edmure is in. It is Robb and the Blackfish he is talking to. But they could shift the Blackfish lines to another character. And we can’t forget the scene in an audition doesn’t mean it will be in the show that way.

  • Pretty sure he’s talking to Robb & Cat — nothing against the Blackfish, but it’s a bit more dramatic umph if this is a Sister Brother smack talk

  • The first character has to be Blackfish, look at these lines:

Will you please shut your damn mouth about the damn Stone Mill? And he’s not your nephew, he’s your king.

You’re lucky I’m not your king. I wouldn’t let you wave your blunders around like a victory flag.

I don’t think these lines make sense coming from Cat (too much swearing) or a Northern bannerman (way too presumptuous). “You’re lucky I’m not your king,” that reads like an uncle reprimanding an ill-behaved nephew.

  • Brett:
Has Catelyn even mentioned Edmure up to this point?I know Riverrun’s been mentioned. It’s going to be kind of weird to introduce this new brother that’s never been mentioned before, just in time for him to get captured at the Red Wedding.

this is exactly what i was going to type.

as far as the show goes we’ve not had a single word or hint that Cat has any more family than Lysa … just throwing Edmure in out of the blue is going to seem a bit odd.

  • I don’t understand the Blackfish obsession. He’s a relatively minor and relatively uninteresting character and he isn’t central to the story in any way.

At least Edmure has a large (or if not large, significant) part to play in the events of ASOS.

  • Yellow Dog,

I thought he portrayed Edmure quite well. Plus, something about him reminds me of Michelle Fairley (facially, not the Irishness).

  • Even if it is the Blackfish’s lines used for the casting tapes, that doesn’t mean the Blackfish himself will be cast. They could just quickly pull and adapt parts of the book for the audition tapes before they write the actual scripts.

  • Who Is Jacopo Belbo?, actually Catelyn mentioned her father in Season 1. And “the riverlords” have been mentioned too.

garik16, the change is because Tywin is back in King’s Landing at this point. So they are inventing a new, somewhat similar blunder Edmure can make, so he can be introduced as a screw-up. The writing of the military situation has really been one of the weakest points of the TV show. Martin planned out the strategies and tactics of each of the Five Kings so carefully, but in the show the armies are just like amorphously doing things with no real sense of a larger strategy.

Ro, this scene is completely different from the one in the books and obviously invented for the show.

  • Family, Duty, Honor.

Everyone sing along with me the intro credits as Riverrun pops up from the ground!

Watchout sister f-ing Kingslayer, I’m coming to kick your A$$!

  • Who Is Jacopo Belbo?,

Not quite true. Cat mentions Hoster at the Inn of the Crossroads when she arrests Tyrion (and the Frey bannerman mentions that Lord Walder invited Lord Hoster to his most recent marriage). I think Hoster (or, at least, “Cat’s father”) was also mentioned in the Lord Walder scene.

  • garik16,

Well in the books, Robb is basically in the Westerlands for the majority of Clash of Kings, which is changed for the show. He was staying their to lure Tywin in, but then Edmure stopped him long enough so that word of Stannis’ attack reached him, and he made for Kings Landing. Now, this event is obviously going to be in season 2, so they had to choose a different Lannister bannerman to use instead of Tywin. I assume they’ll be trying to lure Gregor, Edmure stops him for a while, and then he gets called back to the capitol for a certain trial by battle.

This is deffinitely good news! I never really doubted the Tullys would show up, but having a confirmation is always nice. Now somebody go leak Meera’s casting tape, so we can finally have an episodes comment thread on here without people asking where the Reeds are! :P

  • I suspect we will start to get Tully references in the last couple of episodes. Wouldn’t be surprised if Cat gets a letter saying her father died and brother is getting married or something along those lines, or her just saying I’m going to riverrun. B&R dying/winterfell burning will allow for a nice transitional reason for her to head to Riverrun

  • Cool. House Tully is one of my favorite “other houses” and Edmure is a great character. Hard to picture this actor as him since he’s not in costume (and is it just me, or is he on the brink of laughing or smiling in during some of his lines?), but I suppose with dyed-reddish hair he could do the character justice.

  • the goat:

Catelyn mentions Hoster to Walder Frey, saying he’s “quite ill”. Frey replies that he never liked his family, never let any of his “children” marry any of the Freys.

  • If I was D&D, I would cast Blackfish and keep it the ultimate secret JUST to screw with fan’s heads. Think of the lulz.

  • As a staunch Edmure defender, this dialog pisses me off to no end. He seems to have been given much more explicit orders to not do anything here than in the books. It’s mostly Robb’s fault in the books and I don’t like that they are putting it all on Edmure.

  • Andrew,

This scene seems very close to a scene I remember from the books between Robb, Edmure and the Blackfish. Here’s the description:

    http://towerofthehand.com/books/103/015/index.html

They retire to Lord Hoster’s audience chamber. Edmure continues to talk of his victory at Stone Mill until Brynden angrily cuts him off. Robb had wanted Tywin to come west. He had meant to lead Tywin’s army, composed mostly of foot, on a chase though the Westerlands and then meet him on ground of his own choosing. If Tywin fought, he would have been bloodied. If not, he would have been trapped in the west while Stannis attacked King’s Landing. If Stannis had won, Robb might have been able to forge a peace. Instead, riders from Bitterbridge were able to meet with Tywin just in time for him to link up with Lord Mathis and Lord Randyll and then march to meet Lord Mace and take Stannis in the rear. Catelyn says that Robb must now win back the North. Robb does not see how he can unless he wins back Lord Walder.

Seems pretty much exactly how this audition tape plays out. I don’t have a book to check how close the dialogue is but it sounds pretty close from the top of my head.

So, to me, this is evidence that Edmure is going to be cast, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that this particular scene is for sure going to make it into the show. Only that the producers thought it would be a good scene to adapt for the audition tapes. Which means that this provides no evidence one way or the other about the Blackfish.

  • Ro,

Oh, I know it’s not for sure. Sophie and Maises audition scenes never made it in, after all. I was just trying to explain to the guy why they might make it Gregor instead of Tywin, since he said he felt it was an odd change.

  • Andrew:
Ro, this scene is completely different from the one in the books and obviously invented for the show.

I was more replying to this comment Andrew.

  • Way to scoop, Rabbit!

No offense, Tom Sullivan, but that is so not how I pictured Edmure.

  • Meh!
Sympathize with those who found the whole Tully story-line boooooring!
Yes, they needed to be cast for plot reasons but I am glad we didn’t have to suffer the boredom up till now and hope we won’t suffer much of it in S3. The Blackfish is a badass warrior but not that interesting. Give me the Goat pleaaath and keep the fith in the river as far as I am concerned.

  • Ro, there are two Andrews posting, sorry. I posted the comment you were responding to. I went back and checked the books and the scenes are completely different, almost every line of dialogue is invented and the military situation is updated to what it would be in the show rather than the books (i.e. no mention of Tywin, who’s back at King’s Landing by now). Since we know the scripts are done already, I gotta assume that this is from an actual script.

  • 1) People should never underestimate the cost of an extra season of an actor. There’s the actual cost, the cost to reserve their time, etc. We’ve seen quite a few of these so far in Season 2 — Ramsay, Edmure, etc.

    2) The Blackfish could very well be in, but none of this is definitive. This wouldn’t be the first time there’s an audition for a side that was later altered. He’s still — through ADwD — a cool, but unnecessary character.

    3) I think Hoster is going to be in, because I suspect they will want to give Catelyn that moment — and the Tansy story works for her as well as two already cast characters in Lysa and Littlefinger. And Lysa will be seen in Season 4 again, most likely. These writers prefer character development over “badassness” if you haven’t noticed. I do, too, most of the time.

  • Casting for extras in Northern Ireland and what they are looking for

    MALES:
    – with short length hair of every colour
    – with shoulder length hair of every colour
    – all hair lengths with and without good beards
    – with short blonde hair
    – with long dark hair & beards
    – sporty, strong & fit types
    – any male amputees

    We’re always interested in men:
    – with special skills: archery, combat-skills, martial arts, military experience, rowers & sailors
    – in smaller numbers we generally require: farmers, butchers, carpenters, iron workers, blacksmiths, weavers, medieval musicians

    FEMALES:

    – With long natural undyed hair

And men or women that are over 18 and that are under 5ft in height.

We always love to see unusual, timeless and character-full faces.

  • Here’s my crazy blackfish theory I think the blackfish is gonna be the one who gets sansa away from littlefinger. who better than a tully to finally give littlfinger his

  • Sir Pounce:
I don’t understand the Blackfish obsession. He’s a relatively minor and relatively uninteresting character and he isn’t central to the story in any way.
At least Edmure has a large (or if not large, significant) part to play in the events of ASOS.

I’m with you. STFU about the Blackfish already. And this guy is a little old to be Catelyn’s younger brother, no?

  • I also noticed that the video mentions the taking of two hostages, Willem Lannister and Tion Lannister. These are the hostages that Karstark kills in the book — though Tion’s last name is Frey in the book — so it looks like they will hit that plotline early in S3.

  • Yellow Dog:
ohboy, I’ve watched the tape and it looks like they’re going to get deep into the Riverrun sub-plot.

Usually the scripts don’t reflect what’s going to be in the final product. As I recall, Sophie Turner had lines that were from the book but not in the show for her audition, and some other people actually had to do lines from Storm of Swords and Clash of Kings for the first season.

  • I thought that scene was incredibly well-written. Or maybe it’s just because I loved this plot point in the books. Damn, Season 2 is still in full swing, and I’m already salivating for Season 3.

  • The Blackfish is one of those characters that, regardless of how important a role they would have on the ongoing plot, would bring a lot to the series simply by being there. He has a devoted fan following for a reason, and I would be really interested in seeing D&D utilize his character on the show. They could even expand his role if they felt he wouldn’t be important enough otherwise.

Glad to see Edmure getting cast, although really I never doubted it – he is far too important not to be.

  • Matt Chung: Usually the scripts don’t reflect what’s going to be in the final product. As I recall, Sophie Turner had lines that were from the book but not in the show for her audition, and some other people actually had to do lines from Storm of Swords and Clash of Kings for the first season.

That’s different. As you say, in past auditions actors have read scenes directly from the books. But these are not lines from the books. This is a newly written adapted scene, seemingly perfectly tooled to introduce the Tullys to the TV audience.

  • David Wenham is how I’ve began picturing Edmure Tully, so I’d love for that to come to fruition. Big fan of Tony Curran too, however he’s got a more sinister look than I’d prefer for Edmure. I’m just glad that we got some official casting news for the Tully’s, to be honest. I’m almost willing to guarantee we see Hoster Tully, if only because it gives Catelyn some nice dramatic material to work with in season three (Alan Dale for Hoster!), and it gives more weight to Edmure becoming the Lord of Riverrun, which is important for a major event later down the road (hopefully the fourth season premiere – not a fan of the idea of it happening in the third season). As for the Blackfish… Not sure, but can’t honestly say I’d care one way or another.

  • Par the course, no reed comments and more people bitching bout people who want the reeds. You guys realize there are more comments about bitching about people who wants the reeds than Reed comments themselves?, Commence people bitching about people who bitch about no reeds in 3…2..1..

    dizzy_34:
Yea for Riverrun! (and Yea for Rabbit!) Countdown to Reed bitching in 3…2…

  • Well this is good news. I thought they would change it to Catelyn marrying Walder Frey if Edmure wasn’t cast.

  • Blackfish: And men or women that are over 18 and that are under 5ft in height.

Yay they are adding Hobbits to the story.

I’ve actually seen it suggested that they want shortish Extras to act as wildlings in scenes with the Giants. They may just want them to appear in scenes with Brienne and Gregor though.

  • I like the idea of Tony Curran as a recasting for Beric Dondarrion. He could be a perfectly good Edmure, but I think he’d be fantastic as Beric.

  • It has been speculated that the Blackfish is gay, and it is always nice to see non sterotypical gay people on screen, so it might provide a chance at more diversity for the Dans. Where is Blackfish Blues when you need her??9

  • I really hadn’t doubted the Blackfish would be cast eventually. I mean really the riverlands must needs representing. However, due to budgeting, I wonder if Irri’s death and others (death’s not expected) is one way for the production to make monetary availability for more centric characters?
Any way this is my first time posting. I am a avid browser of this site. Love it. Love all the commenters, even, the fuss buckets.
Thanks guys for providing a wonderful experience which enhances my knowledge of Thrones.

  • Blackfish:
Casting for extras in Northern Ireland and what they are looking for

    FEMALES:

    – With long natural undyed hair

    Me me me me meeeeeeeee

    ….Northern Ireland? Awww fuuuuu.

And men or women that are over 18 and that are under 5ft in height.

That part is strange. I wonder what for? The jousting dwarves?

  • Cheers for Rabbit!! So glad we will have the Tully’s and Riverrun. they really strayed away from the book on the last show.

  • Yes, thats amazing!!!! Family-WiC & HBO & GRRM, Duty-include as many original characters as possible, and Honor-the source material!!!!!

  • I imagine the other major Tullies are on their way, and probably Riverrun, too.

They got most of the major sets and locations built already for Season 2, I’m sure they can spare a bit of the budget to set up Riverrun.

They also already have details on Riverrun on the Game of Thrones Viewer’s Guide.

  • Michelle Fairley is, imho, one of the three strongest actors in the series (that are still around, that is). The Tullys were missed by me simply because of the opportunity for her to shine even more. I can see a brotherly resemblance in Mr. Sullivan’s eyes. Even if he is not the one ultimately cast, I join in the voices rejoicing in Edmure and the gang cast.

  • garik16,

Yeah, that really concerns me. I’ve been disappointed with the conveying of Robb’s war in season 2 (no context given to his actions, the significance of his victories/the reason he goes west). That change from Tywin to The Mountain significantly weakens the point and goal of Robb’s plans and actions in ACOK. I hope that doesn’t actually end up being the case.

Like most here, I think that conversation is with Blackfish and Robb.

  • Sir Pounce,

I’m with you on this. I can appreciate the Blackfish’s badassery in the books but he’s not that important to the progression of the story and his character is someone they don’t absolutely need. Edmure is a catalyst to other events and it would be a big change to the story if he’s not cast at some point.

On the casting notice for adults under 5 ft tall: Could it be the Children of the Forest? Isn’t ASoS when Arya runs into the ghost of High Heart?

  • ARE you people SO blind to the potential of the Blackfish???? I am not a “Blackfish” obsessed book reader but I have read the books and it is obvious to me that he will play an important part in the story. What I really don’t understand is that whenever any other character has disappeared in a badass way they are revered (Selmy, Hagar, Forel, the hound…shhh, he’s obviously the gravedigger monk…) so why are people thinking that the Blackfish is unimportant? I am not trying to force the issue, truly I’m not, but seriously? Do you really not think that the missing Blackfish will not play a part in the game? There are so many insane ideas about what might happen that I really am in awe that the Blackfish is so quickly discarded.

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to get in contact with the casting directors? Or is there a way to submit yourself via mail to be considered for roles? I know it’s a far-fetched thought, but I figured I might as well ask :P

  • FamilyDutyHonor: I really hope Edmure is as clueless and foolhardy in the show as he is in the books. I’d hate to see D & D combine the two and give Edmure some of the Blackfish’s character traits.

Those are fighting words. I think Edmure is the only character in the books actually worthy of sitting on the Iron Throne. He actually gives a shit about his people. Robb is off trying to avenge his father, leaving his people unprotected and getting them killed so he can be King in the North. Bran is too young. Renly and Stannis would rather have their people fight each other than work together. All of the Ironborn can FOAD. Joffrey and Cersei I don’t even have to get into. Tywin wouldn’t give them an iota of thought beyond their usefulness to him personally. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with Tyrion. Dany would like to raze whole cities to the ground with her dragons. Jon Snow knows nothing. Even Ned would rather plunge the realm into war than fudge his honor. Doran Martell would do, I suppose.

  • if there are to be tullys in the show then we must have the Blackfish !
and some Reeds pls … though by the way season2 is going I suspect the Reeds will be cut out all together

  • Blackfish is by far the coolest Tully, IMO, but his relative impact to the overall story is pretty minimal when you think about it. He adds a little bit of grit to the family, but he’s not needed.

Edmure is obviously a much more important character, even though he’s a douche, but I’m wondering if this means Robb’s storyline is getting pushed back? I’d have to imagine that it does. They may want him to survive for a while for continuity’s sake. They’ve already added quite a bit to his storyline as is, and viewers are pretty invested in his character by now, so the Red Wedding may be one of those things that D&D are pushing back. Because, when you think about Robb’s character in the books, he really serves as little more than a figure head. He’s a beacon of hope for Ned Avengers, but that’s about it (and all Ned Avengers have to learn the hard way at some point).

But, on the other hand, they could very well be casting Edmure so they can kill Robb off next season. Depends on the caliber of actor they cast, I imagine. If they cast a bigger name, it may signal that they’re actually going to do the Riverrun scenes, but if not, they might be going straight to the RW. Robb will marry “Talisa” next season (probably around episode 5), and then: it’ll be a – nice day for a – Red Wedding (*said with sneer*).

  • Geez, I sleep for 9 hours and come back and there’s big news. I need this website on streaming audiotape.

  • The acting and scenery in season 2 has been fantastic. It looks like D & D will go back to pleasing the book readers a little more in seasons 3 and 4…..now that they can take their time a bit and add in the Tully’s, Reed’s, and BwB. I cant wait to see the completed masterpiece in a decade or two.

  • alohomora:
Does anyone know if there is a way to get in contact with the casting directors?Or is there a way to submit yourself via mail to be considered for roles? I know it’s a far-fetched thought, but I figured I might as well ask :P

  • Just wanted to point out, that in the Tape Person X Says:
“I wanted to lure the Mountain into the West, into our country.”
That pretty much confirms that it’s not the Greatjon, and from the way the person speaks it can also not be Catelyn. The only person I can think of, that is from the Riverlands and that would talk like that, would be the Blackfish. Unless they create a whole new character, it has to be him.

I’m pretty sure, that at the end of Season 2 Catelyn will hear the news of her fathers death and will return to Riverrun. That will also be a good reason for the Blackfish to return (or maybe he’s been there all along).

  • sCor,

“I wanted to lure the Mountain into the West, into our country.”

yeah, I ve noticed that, too.
but still, it could be changed, as some of the commenters pointed out.

  • I wasn’t worried about him not being cast, I thought it was pretty obvious he was going to.

    A Storm of Swords Spoiler

Since the creators main motivation for creating this show in the first place was to create the RW on screen, which can’t be done without the main character

  • freyar_88:
    David Wenham.
    That is all.

Yeah, ever since seeing Sean Bean as Ned Stark I began picturing David Wenham as Edmure Tully.

  • Well done Rabbit! Typically I was out last night and missed all this news and now of course the video has been taken down. Anyone take a copy?

So this was the year of the Kraken, next year is the year of the Fish?

    Jackie.

  • Kaeth: Here’s my crazy blackfish theory I think the blackfish is gonna be the one who gets sansa away from littlefinger. who better than a tully to finally give littlfinger his

    I LOVE THIS!

  • I honestly can’t believe that people are so willing to disregard the Blackfish… I just finished a re-read of AFFC and 1) he is the reason that Riverrun has withstood the siege for so long; 2) his beat down with Jaime is EPIC; 3) his disappearance from Riverrun when it falls is the thing that Jaime finds most alarming. In fact, Jaime sends out his best men to find the Blackfish because he is so dangerous. Blackfish will end up on the Iron Throne if I have my druthers…. (sort of kidding).

  • Team Sansa: and 1) he is the reason that Riverrun has withstood the siege for so long; 2) his beat down with Jaime is EPIC; 3) his disappearance from Riverrun when it falls is the thing that Jaime finds most alarming. Just for that, I may have to stop insulting Sansa fans.

  • Winter Is Coming,

Is there anyway WiC.net could start a collection towards the production of the show? I know how much all my friends and I love the show and they’ve stated that if they could they would send money to D & D for the production of the show. If all of us sent in whatever we would afford it would be a nice little gift for D & D, it probably wouldn’t amount to more than 10k or so but every penny helps!!!!

  • serum,

It’s a really nice thought, but I think there are a lot of legal and financial ramifications to something like that. :/ You could go to the HBO store and buy a ton of merchandise though!

Back on topic, Edmure! So exciting, because I was starting to think we’d never see Riverrun or another Tully! As for any other thoughts, I’m going to keep this short and sweet: BLACKFISH.

  • Sorry to double post but I missed this before:

    Yellow Dog: I LOVE THIS!

I second that. What an awesome idea! However, I would like Blackfish to be more like a guide and guardian (like he was to Cat!) because Sansa has to be the main player in her own redemption! I’m hoping for her to finally get really good at the game of thrones and pull a check-mate on LF.

  • What ever happened to “get Joe on the show?” he still going to be mance?

  • I am speculating where I think the TV show will go wrt Tully’s and River Run.

I believe Cat will let Jaime go this season after word of Bran and Rickon make it to the Camp. However, she’ll likely be the one to cut off his hand. She will make some comment about how Joffery took her husband’s head, so she is taking Joffery’s uncle/father’s hand. She will also rationalize it by thinking she is saving lives by crippling him before letting him go. Robb will banish her to River Run, and that is how the locaiton will be introduced. Cat will work behind the scenes to support Robb, and to repair the broken promises to the Freys; which will lead to the RW.

  • Christmas is coming,

He was NEVER going to be Mance. I don’t even think he thought it was possible that he’d be cast in that central a role. He used it for his “audition”. That’s it.

As far as any of us knows, Joe has not met with anyone in a position to actually cast him, and I’m also 90% sure they haven’t even watched his videos. I like Joe, and I hope he gets on the show, but I can say with certainty that even if he does, he won’t be playing Mance.

  • stephanso!,

I could be wrong, but I sincerely doubt we’re gonna get someone that busy for this role. If it was a lead role, sure. But Edmure may not even be a regular. So…my thinking; whoever plays Edmure will probably not be a very well-known actor.

  • Tenesmus: I am speculating where I think the TV show will go wrt Tully’s and River Run. I believe Cat will let Jaime go this season after word of Bran and Rickon make it to the Camp. No offense, but no way. Jaime won’t lose his hand until AFTER his fight with Brienne.

Still not enough of a Sansa fan to hope for this, but I could grit my teeth and accept it if it gives the Blackfish more screen time.

  • About bloody time !!!!

In a perfect world Damian Lewis would play Edmure but that’s highly unlikely at this stage. I still stand by David Wenham but I won’t hold my breath.

I would love to see some Blackfish too.

  • I will say almoust as Jaime said to Catelyn in last episode: “You’ve become a real she-wolf in your later years. There’s not much fish left in you.” So I say also bring to us more fish.

  • Pastor_of_Muppets,

Nothing new really, except for the fact that they had two NEW 44,000 square-feet sound stages purpose built for production on the series going forward. That should put some of the people worrying about cancellation (deluded as they may be) at ease; looks like the production is in it for the long haul

My sentiments exactly, with all the future new sets to be constructed for required settings and the fact that the vast majority of old sets must remain, i.e. WF, KL, DS, TE, CB and so on, HBO needs more soundstage space for seasons 5 thru 10.

Erm shouldn’t WF not remain next season ?

  • The Kingslayer,

Loved Damian Lewis in Band of Brothers, and I always wanted to see more of him. His movie career wasn’t that successful. I haven’t seen Homeland yet, so don’t know how good that is. Sometimes and actor juggles with more than one tv show, so there’s always hope, and Edmure is a small part so I could see it work for him.

  • The Kingslayer,

I’ve read few weeks ago that Castle Black was dissambled/dismantled (I’m Polish and I don’t remember word for it ), but before that they scaned it to reconstruct it as CGI in next season, but I can’t remember where…

  • Hey people,
I’ve been wondering about the idea of them having Joffrey’s wedding and the red wedding back to back as the season 3 finale. This would be awesome and would slightly take away the depression of the new viewers at robb’s death if you saw joffreys death at the same time. The problem would be that you don’t see joffrey laughing at sansa for it and tyrion comforting her. But what do you guys think? :)

  • Can you just spell them out? I’ve read the books a zillion times, and geek out for the show every week, and I am struggling to figure out what the hell you’re trying to say.

  • Hey – anything’s possible. But that’s a HUGE departure from the books. I wouldn’t expect that (but D&D have surprised me before).

  • kingthlayer:
ARE you people SO blind to the potential of the Blackfish???? I am not a “Blackfish” obsessed book reader but I have read the books and it is obvious to me that he will play an important part in the story. What I really don’t understand is that whenever any other character has disappeared in a badass way they are revered (Selmy, Hagar, Forel, the hound…shhh, he’s obviously the gravedigger monk…) so why are people thinking that the Blackfish is unimportant? I am not trying to force the issue, truly I’m not, but seriously? Do you really not think that the missing Blackfish will not playa part in the game? There are so many insane ideas about what might happen that I really am in awe that the Blackfish is so quickly discarded.

I’m like you, but in a slightly different fashion. I certainly think the Blackfish has a bigger role to play in the last two books, and I’m cool with that. What I don’t understand is the strange Beatle-like love so many people seem to have for him. He’s a minor character (maybe a major character later, admittedly), with a cool name. That’s it.

People have sworn to stop watching if he’s cut like he’s their all-time favorite character or Aegon the Conqueror reborn or something. I get we all have different tastes though, I respect their likes… I just don’t get it.

  • Kingthlayer: will not play an integral role in the future…whenever GRRMs characters go unaccounted for, they tend to resurface in awesome ways…

I agree completely. People commenting that he’s not important maybe have forgotten how his storyline was left, the Blackfish slips away but he has to come back sometime & there is a reason GRRM lets him escape…..he’s important later on.

  • Ed: Can you just spell them out? I’ve read the books a zillion times, and geek out for the show every week, and I am struggling to figure out what the hell you’re trying to say.

Fairly obvious I would have thought

WF, KL, DS, TE, CB and so on, HBO

Winterfell, Kings Landing, Dragonstone, The Eyrie, Castle Black and Home Box Office.

  • I hope they don’t cut Hoster either. His dying & what is revealed about Lysa in his drugged state, is important much later to the Sansa/Littlefinger plotline.

  • Morrigan: Me me me me meeeeeeeee

    ….Northern Ireland? Awww fuuuuu.

That part is strange. I wonder what for? The jousting dwarves?

    Children of the Forest?

  • Ed,

That would be a departure & not really in Cat’s nature (she doesn’t really go bat shit crazy until the Red Wedding) but more importantly cutting the Brave Companions out cuts about 80% of Jamie & Brienne’s time together (bonding time if you will) & elliminates the great Brienne/bear scene which is a HUGE shift for Jamie’s character…..he sacrifices himself for someone else (not his sister or brother) & realizes that he’s grown to care for Brienne. Unless the writers continue this path of making Jamie a complete asshole, which would be very sad, as he’s one of GRRM’s most complex characters. Thus far, HBO’s Jamie is very one dimensional.

  • Ed:
    Why?

His confrontation with Jaime is excellent and important to the other character’s development, he’s easily the coolest Tully and has been left in a situation where he could be important later on in the plot- it’s another potentially interesting element to the story if so, and I can think of all manner of possibilities.

Someone needs to be left to guard Riverrun and having it be a member of the Tully family makes sense- you could have the Greatjon do it, but why would the riverlands people trust a northener they don’t know when he refuses to negotiate until Jaime arrives? If you need a character for that, it might as well be the Blackfish. If you lose that storyline you lose the thing mentioned above, which would be a shame. It’s possible of course, but I’d like it to stay.

Anyway, whatever the status of the other Tullys, getting Edmure is good news, and I’m interested to see who is cast!

    Okay, cool! Good answer.

  • Re: why Blackfish is so in-demand:

Because of his absence. After his great scenes in ASOS, he disappears for two entire books. If he’d had small appearances in each, we wouldn’t be so adamant for his return.

Imagine if Bronn had gotten a big payoff from Tyrion after the battle at the Green Fork and we’d never seen him in King’s Landing. We’d all be yelling Bronn! More Bronn! Need us some Bronn!

  • Shinyteapot,

    Things the Blackfish does
Talks smack to Jaime (can be covered by any other character)
Gives advice no one listens to (can be covered by any other character)
Runs away in the middle of the night (what a hero)

I have more respect for Hot Pie.

Well, some readers think that he ran off with the “real Jeyne”, who’s pregnant for Robbs child.

Tim Roth would be an awesome Mance…

I think we need some imposing actors for the new roles, with the departure of Sean Bean and Mark Addy (and even Jason Momoa) we lost 2 heavy weights that stole any scenes they were in…I really miss them this second season, I think only Charles Dances exhudes this “aura of power” now (not the rest are bad actors, au contraire, just not as powerful …and tbh some are not giving their best imo, dunno why)

  • “If you give a mouse a cookie, he’s going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him the milk, he’ll probably ask you for a straw. When he’s finished, he’ll ask you for a napkin. Then he’ll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn’t have a milk mustache. When he looks in the mirror, he might notice his hair needs a trim … ”

If you give a “book purist” Edmure Tully, chances are they’ll want a Blackfish. When you give them the Blackfish, they’ll probably ask you for the Reeds. After getting the Reeds they’ll want a Big Walder and Little Walder to finish off this Bran subplot. After Bran they’ll start thinking about Kings Landing and will probably ask for a Jacelyn Bywater.

And it goes on and on and on … If some of you got your way, the show would have 149 principal characters and would be grossly over budget and canceled by Season 4.

I must admit I started with the show, so now I am partial to the show, and feel a need to stick up for any David/Dan/HBO alterations. However I have read the first book, and 2/3 of the second book (staying roughly equal with the show), and they are great as well. I enjoy the extra characters, insight, and background, they are great books. I just don’t understand why some people/critics can’t seperate the two … You can enjoy both of them at the same time … You just have to treat it as a parralell universe in which 90% of the events are the same, enjoy the differences! It would be boring if they were exact replicas of each other!

One legitimate complaint/question I have about the show itself: Why cut Greatjon Umber out of the picture? He was AWESOME in season 1. Everytime they go to Robs camp they have 3-4 old white nameless boring dudes standing around. I don’t need all of the Northern Lords present by any means … but I think it would help the continuity of the show if they keep around the one Northern Lord they introduced last season, who was largely effective. Whoever plays him can’t cost that much money. And he was great. Anyone know why he is gone?

  • Who cares that the Blackfish may not be important to the overall story, do we only need characters who are? That would make for a very boring show. A lot of people want him in simply because they think he is an awesome character. Bring on Strong Belwas and Shitmouth please!

  • dizzy_34:
Yea for Riverrun! (and Yea for Rabbit!) Countdown to Reed bitching in 3…2…

You know, D&D could still write in teh Reeds. Just have them show up later on. They have all ready jacked the time line of events all to hell and back again anyways, so making the Reeds show up before Bran and crew go beyond the Wall would work just fine. Besides, Meera is a bad ass tracker so it is not like she couldn’t find Bran and crew with ease. They could make it so the Reeds show up and swear loyalty because Bran is the son of their liege Lord.

Glad to hear about the Tully’s. I was not sure about how certain plot lines with Rob would have worked out without Edmure. O.o

  • Ed,

I hear you – the obsession does go a bit far for some.

small character + cool name = if Darkstar is not in the series I will open a vein.

  • Pau Soriano,

I do love Tim but I think he’d be more likely to be cast as Ramsey Snow (I will not dignify him with the name Bolton ) than Mance. He can play charming but he’s better at creepy and offputting. All though I did really love him on Lie to me. Does anyone know if he can sing?

  • Danielle:

I think he is too old for Ramsay, whereas he has the perfect age for Mance..and he plays ambiguous perfectly! He’s also small but dangerous looking, too..

And yes, he can sing ;)

  • Ned,

D&D could have easily mentioned that Greatjon Umber was besieging a castle somewhere in order to explain his absence.

  • For book readers, regarding The Blackfish:
Come on now, do you all think he’s going to let Riverrun go forever? do you even think for one second he isn’t going to try to get it back? Do you think he’s going to sit idly by as Edmure is a prisoner of the Lannisters? Why do you think Jaime was so concerned that he got away? He’s going to show up again, mark my words. And when he does, it’s going to be IN A BIG WAY. So yeah, he’s important.

  • Virtus,

What some people imagine in their fanwank fiction and what is actually happening in the books is not necessarily the same thing.

  • MetalgoddessAMB,

There’s also the possibility that the Blackfish escaped with a pregnant Jeyne Westerling in tow, that they’re heading to the Neck to take refuge in Greywater Watch, and we finally get some closure on the Howland Reed thing.

  • Pau Soriano,

I dunno I disagree. Liam Cunningham and Stephen Dillane have that ‘aura’. They just need more screen time.

Also Jaime is now in play. He’ll be the star of the series come next season.

  • Joshua Taylor:

Also Jaime is now in play. He’ll be the star of the series come next season.

They’re good actors but they don’t convey that aura, maybe because one is playing a King without charisma and the other his second…for example, in the parlament with Renly I think Gethin Anthony stole the scene and he’s one of the actors I liked the least in the whole series..

NCW was really really great in that scene (although I really hated it for other reasons), but looking at the journey he has ahead I don’t think he’ll be the star next season…if anything they’ll “promote” Robb, for reasons well known ;) But none of those are scene-steelers like Bean or Addy were

Although we all know this is a coral show, some powerful actors for roles like Euron/Victarion, Mance, The Red Viper or the Blackfish (if he’s cast) would be great..

PS: I’m really liking Melisandre though. I liked her on the books and I think CVH is doing a perfect job with a very difficult role in the show

  • DavidBC,

Georgie said there won’t be any new POV chapters, sans pro/epi, although he’s made stuff up before in the past that turned out not to be true…

  • DavidBC,

GRRM is on record as saying no new POV characters in the coming books. Needless to say, he could change his mind as a matter of course, if he felt the story called for it.

  • DavidBC,

No more POV characters, please. Jeyne Westerling POV? Really? No thanks. Preggo Jeyne would be another pointless storyline. Is George going to have a 15-20 year time jump in order for the kid to do anything? It’s bad enoug that Rickon is still only 5 or 6 and may play a role in the story.

  • that actor is thinner than what i had imagined edmure to be, but he seems to be a good call for the job. i liked him, he has a smiliar eye color to michelle fairley’s…

  • Pau Soriano,

I guess we will have to disagree because I think Renly and Stannis were equally awesome in the scene. I will confess that I have been following Dillane’s career for a long time so I have a bias. But I love his Stannis.

As for the Jaime scene I will have to admit that I am not the ASOIAF fan like I thought I was because every true ASOIAF has told me how wrong that scene is whereas I don’t see how him killing a distant cousin in an attempt to get back to the people he cares about ruins his character. I just don’t see it. And I also disagree that NCW does not have Bean’s or Addy’s presence. He steals every scene he is in. Even the ones with those two.

If I have a criticism of season 2 it is this. ACOK should have been spread over one and a half seasons. The 10 episode limit in my opinion hampered an already problematic plotline for adaptation,. It seems everything is pointing towards the Blackwater and House of the Undying, but they didn’t let the rest of the narrative breathe. Either that or a lot was left on the cutting room floor. Other than that, I think the show is great.

Also, great to see Carice’s Mel does have fans. I agree, she is rocking the role.

  • daprosinik:

They haven’t even given any context to Robb’s battles and movements this year haha.

He actually does that in the book though. After the Battle of Oxcross, Robb sends the Greatjon off to raid gold mines I think.

  • ThePinkDragon,

I’m just saying that you need a character in this realm to tell the story… If anyone expects the Blackfish or Jeyne to turn up again…

and really the only potential candidate is Brienne, but to what end would that work?

    Oooooooh, them’s fighting words.

Darkstar is the Roz of the books, a character more liked by the author than the fans, a “Scrappy Doo” if you will.
Yet another would be badass, only this one screws up killing a little girl, and not because he got squeamish.

  • Yeah so it tells me that it’s been deleted o.o The audition that tape that is. I wanted to see what the audition text entailed to see how they might have altered Edmure’s role without the whole riverrun mess up. And now it says it’s gone! LAME :( That’s what I get for not checking WiC the past few days, I guess.

I have to agree wholeheartadly (sp?) about the length issue. Mb that’s the mother of all problems, because we’re not seeing enough of anybody, with the exception of Theon and mb Arya (both of which are killing it btw).

Regarding the actors, I don’t think we are that far off in our point of views ;)

And regarding Jaime, more than the out-of-character aspect of the scene (which u can always arguee it wasn’t for show-Jaime), it was the overall sillyness of it…

But hey, I’m loving the show too! I’m not in as much awe as with the first season, and last episode had me facepalming through it for the first time, but I think the last 3 episodes will be much better and I’m really looking forward season 3 ;)

  • Pau Soriano,

Pau Soriano: I think he is too old for Ramsay, whereas he has the perfect age for Mance..and he plays ambiguous perfectly! He’s also small but dangerous looking, too..

And yes, he can sing ;)

Ok, I’m sold. That song was so sweet! I didn’t even think about the description of Mance’s height. If he got cast I would actually be ok with Lie to Me being canceled. I still want Alan Tudyk for Edmure though!!!!!

Silliness of the scene? this scene actually happens in the books. Remember jaime’s failed escape attempt? Granted he doesn’t kill his cousin in the book but at this point Jaime would do anything fr freedom. His arc doesn’t change until his hand is cut off. Remember this is the same person who pushed a little kid out of a eindwo

  • Anders,

    – But as the rumors continued to roll, was well cast those interested in finding out “who exactly is this guy?”. So my agent pushed it here, so I suddenly audition, and I did yesterday. And two hours ago they called me and was really excited and wanted me on. So now suddenly the rumor was true, says Hivju in “Lindmo.”

  • Anders,
The translation is a little iffy, but it does end with saying “IF he gets on.” The people listening to the Lindmo program confirmed that he had an audition but it doesn’t sound like he’s been given a role for sure yet. We’ll check into it more, though.

  • Two more audition videos uploaded at vimeo by french actor Baptiste Salomon.
    http://vimeo.com/42500023,
Pretty much poor quality. And I am not so sure which role it is.
It is definitely an Essos character. (Daario or some other sellsword?)
Hurry up with watching it, before the video is taken down.

  • The ‘Titan’s Bastard’ is Mero, leader of the Second Sons sellsword company. He is a Braavosi.

  • Great find, Rabbit!

It’s Mero, the Titan’s Bastard, and he’s talking to Daario, as Lex pointed out.

  • Titan’s Bastard! Nice!

Could this mean that we are getting HOTU tonight and the” strange place” in the synopsis for episode 20 is Astapor?

Is that a conversation with Daario and the other leaders before hecuts the heads off the other leaders and brings them to Dany?

  • The Rabbit,

He’s talking TO someone reading Daario Naharis’s lines- the actor’s lines address Daario directly. Not sure who this guy is supposed to be. But I’m sure everyone will be super fond of this dialogue all about raping and killing Dany potentially. Hopefully it’s just a test scene and not a real script. “My cock will find a way.” Oy vey.
(And I downloaded the videos just in case they disappear.)

  • Ours is the Fury,

Yikes. They DID take it down. Skittlesticks…

What a goofy line. Then again, quite a few of those Essos SOBs do take much pride in their divining rods.

  • Hmmmm. sounds like the Titans Bastard will be amongst the sellsword leaders who Daario betrays and kills for Dany i dont really mind that since he was a cool character who was kind of underutilized in the books.
