Episode 18 – The Prince of Winterfell – Open Chat

Just three episodes left in season two. Tonight is the Alan Taylor directed “The Prince of Winterfell”. It should be a good one. Talk amongst yourselves as the episode nears and give us your reactions as it airs. Just like last week, we will have a recap thread up as soon as the episode ends for you all to discuss the episode. My thoughts will be added to that post later. We also will have the new viewer thread up for those who wish to discuss the series without fear of book spoilers.

Here are the details for episode 18:

Writers: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss
Director: Alan Taylor
Runtime: 54 min
Synopsis: At Winterfell, Theon receives a visitor and holds down the fort. Arya calls in her final debt with Jaqen in a way that displeases him. Robb is betrayed. Tyrion and Varys find common ground. • I don’t quite recall the “Davos is offered a reward,” part, but I’m looking forward to the Winterfell and Harrenhall scenes!

  • Sounds like there is a lot of potential for some seriously awesome scenes this episode.

  • LordDavos12: Are we going to see inside the HotU tonight?

If it happens, sounds like its going to be episode 10. Previews made the episode seem Arya,Jon, Theon, Tyrion heavy. Guessing we get one scene each of Davos/Stannis, Catelyn, Robb, Dany and multiple for everyone else.

  • Theons visitos is oblivious Yara. I also wish that people in Winterfell react “Bran” and “Rickon” death like in book, some dead ironborn soldien in screen. Also want see how they make Aryas last wish,

because for now on Jaqen has kill two wrong character. Will Tywin march on in next episode? Will there be Battle of the Fords? Will Mountain (Big M because there are no Footmens) bring some Stark prisoners? Will Robb even try take Harrenhall (in books plan was Edmures)? And biggest, will Arya wish Jaqens name?

  • Hhhmmm, spoilertaq forgotten in last post. Don’t be mad if I spoil something, but I don’t found any button where I can delete my post.

  • This will be an epic episode, full of important events and leading up to even more crucial events next week. Can’t wait to see Jaqen and Arya, will Arya choose the 3rd name and get it fulfilled, or will that carry into the following weeks? Oooh, C’MON 9pm EST!!!!!

  • Lex:
Is it weird that I’m more excited about this, than about my birthday yesterday? :)

Not weird. Is it weird that a woman feels like every Sunday is her birthday when GOT is on?

  • Please show Catelyn releasing Jaime. We didn’t get this scene in the books, we only hear about it. Hopefully this is the betrayal that Robb faces. I hope they keep a lot of the dialogue from the book in the Arya/Jaqen scene. My hope is that we see a bunch of Northern prisoners being brought into Harrenhal this episode and it leads to Arya saying her third and final name. They can save the hot Weasel soup jailbreak for the finale, which could lead to Roose taking the castle.

  • Just hope that Dagmer is not Ramsey and that Tywin lives on and the events at Harrenhal are more like the book. I want some weasel soup….

Also excited for some potential Jaime and Brienne scenes possibly 10th episode.

And some Drogon fire at the House of the Undying, doubt it we will see the “blue rose” or “RW foreshadowing” or even “his is the song of Ice and Fire”, but you never know, if they do it’ll be extremely badass, but I’m sure new viewers wouldn’t have the slightest idea what they are seeing, but then again D&D know what they’re doing so let’s hope for the best.

  • Wow… Ros gets her own interview as if she is a major player in the Game of Thrones saga. How sad, who gives a shit about Ros? I really hope she gets killed.

GoTs is so much more enjoyable without her needless tits in any scenes…

  • Really hope Ros gets killed off tonight. Have really enjoyed not having her and the pointless exposition scenes that she brings with her on the show for the last 3 weeks. Im hoping that Cersei gets rid of her to try and hurt Tyrion so we can put an end to this character. This late in the season with such massive events literally right around the corner I really hope no longer than 5 minutes is wasted on Ros tonight

  • Arthur,

Will people say she was pointless when she basically takes the role of Alayaya? I predicted this before the season even started.

  • Going to miss the initial airing…Going to see Rancid! I guess it’s worth it….maybe.

  • lannisport,

Dude, I totally agree. The last few episodes were awesome without Ros. It felt like there was no wasted screen time wrote in for some stupid whore character just to make the “nudity quota” and/or give the actress who plays Ros some lines because apparently D&D like her.

This article pisses me off already because it is obvious we will be wasting 5-10 minutes with a stupid whore scene. Oh well, bathroom break anyone?

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

If she does play that role and gets killed I will be a very happy GoTs fan…

But I fear Ros will be with us forever. She is D&D’s creators pet. And it really sucks she gets forcibly pushed onto us.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

    Makes sense that

she was to take her place, yet I find it very strange if she is the one Cersei have abducted/tortured/killed or whatever they have planned in order to pressure Tyrion. There have been absolute no indication in the show that Ros and Tyrion have any sort of relationship that would make Cersei think she can use her against him.

  • It’s funny because in her interview she misses the point of why people don’t like her character…

It’s not that she is offensive, it’s because her character just doesn’t belong. She is being elevated to an “important” character with the amount of screen time and attention she gets.

That’s the part that offends me. I rather see Arya Tywin scenes. If they want to show some sexual stuff then give us Jon and Ygritte or Robb and Jeyne…

    I HATE Ros…

Okay I must breath… The news that she is in tonight’s episode sucks but I’ll get over it.

    Pllease kill her D&D… *begs*

  • Ros is destined to become Ser Robert Strongs left tittie just accept it you’ll be much happier for it. Also clearly she topless so when we see her tittie on ser robert we will already have spent time with that character.

  • House Snow: If it happens, sounds like its going to be episode 10.Previews made the episode seem Arya,Jon, Theon, Tyrion heavy.Guessing we get one scene each of Davos/Stannis, Catelyn, Robb, Dany and multiple for everyone else.

I am hoping episode 10 ends with the introduction of Artsan Whitebeard (that would be a great cliffhanger and they better not re-cast the actor, if they do there will be no impact at all). I also hope they introduce Bolton’s Bastard in full armor (like in the book) that episode. This way they can show his character but not the actor who will play that bastard!

  • Ros is there because a dragon/manitcore/harpy will rise out of her vagina and that will be Azor Ahai reborn. GRRM confirmed….

  • Tywin’s golden shit,

I think in D&D adaptation, when all is said and done, Ros will sit on the Iron Throne…

Just because D&D really like the actress because she is such a nice person of course.

  • Arthur,

Yeah probably… with her leg propped up and her skirt open flashing us some redheaded mound.
Now that’s something i can bow my head to

  • My boy Fuzzy Slippers told me Ros is going to be the last added pov and get 13 chapters in WoW

  • I love Ros. I hope she stays on for the following seasons.

Also, the majority of viewers aren’t book readers, so they have no idea if Ros is a character created for the show or not. They don’t care if she’s taking 5 minutes from another “important” character (which she isn’t anyway, her scenes are almost never about her). For them, she’s just another supporting characters in a show with lots of them.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap:
    Arthur,

Will people say she was pointless when she basically takes the role of Alayaya? I predicted this before the season even started.

How many book pages were spent on the character of Alayaya and what she gets up to, prior to that scene?

And how many minutes of Game of Thrones have been spent (thusfar….since we know there is more to come) on Ros?

Hopefully you see what I’m getting at. The character isn’t “pointless” but she’s a waste of precious time for whatever impact she will ultimately have.

I would have rather had Alayaya introduced in a series of perhaps 3 under five minute scenes, than the show’s method of spending time mistakenly thinking everybody is tuning in to see softcore porn rather than watch a story unfold, and we get a Ros-porn scene every other episode.

  • Eh i like Ros and i don’t see what the problem is with her, if it wasn’t her it’ll be someone else doing the same thing and Esmee Bianco is a good actress.

i wish we’d get get HoU tonight but it seems to be moving to the finale which means we’ll get very little Danny tonight and probably none next week. i want the all three episodes now :(

  • Honestly when I first heard that Ros was going to get more screen time this season I was really annoyed. But she really hasn’t had that many scenes. If she takes Alayaya’s part, well at least then she’ll have a purpose.

  • Arthur:
Wow… Ros gets her own interview as if she is a major player in the Game of Thrones saga. How sad,who gives a shit about Ros?I really hope she gets killed.

GoTs is so much more enjoyable without her needless tits in any scenes…

What an asshole comment to post about ! Who cares what you think anyway, this is not your site so people can post anything they like here .

  • Ros will be the person who wears Renlys armour and will win the Blackwater for the Lannisters. It is known

  • Claudiu Gherganu: What an asshole comment to post about ! Who cares what you think anyway, this is not your site so people can post anything they like here .

Heh, I don’t think he was berating the person who posted the interview. Honestly, lol.

He’s upset that such a waste of a character is even the subject of interviews.

  • Lannisport,

Ros is really a Targaryen. She was placed in a brothel house by Eddard Stark for safe keeping. When Dany invades she will gather an army or whores with the walls of Kings Landing to aid in its capture.

    It is known…

  • My prediction: Shae will be maimed or killed tonight.

If maimed: turns against Tyrion later on because she blames him for what happened.

If killed: Ros will finish Shae’s character arc.

  • Daniel: Tyrion Pimpslap, Makes sense thatshe was to take her place, yet I find it very strange if she is the one Cersei have abducted/tortured/killed or whatever they have planned in order to pressure Tyrion. There have been absolute no indication in the show that Ros and Tyrion have any sort of relationship that would make Cersei think she can use her against him.

To be fair that isn’t true. Ros was the first Whore Tyrion slept with in the show. Say hypothetically someone tells her Tyrion is sleeping with a whore she brought down from the north or some iteration of that in which Ros can be brought up its pretty easy to find a way to mix them up. I mean lord know Ros has been hanging around the castle a ton. Don’t think that would be a huge strtch at all.

  • Zack,

Thanks Zack that is exactly what I meant…

I saw a preview for tonight’s episode and it showed Jon in ropes being dragged around like Ygritte was. Halfhand was right behind them and they were talking…

Maybe this is setting up for what Jon has to do in the books?

  • I really don’t get the Ros hate, most of her scenes aren’t even about her and she has provided some usefull backstory to non-readers. exposition is going to happen in a show like this, whats wrong with mixing a bit of sex with it?

  • I am amazed at how many gay people hate Ros!!! I mean is she is very nice on the eyes so what other reason could their be to hate her than homosexuality?

  • Zack: Heh, I don’t think he was berating the person who posted the interview. Honestly, lol.

He’s upset that such a waste of a character is even the subject of interviews.

That is still pretty pathetic to be honest . But then again I expect this from Arthur who keeps posting stupid comments not only about this but about Meera Reed and some other things .

  • LordDavos12,

Almost certainly yes. The show has gone out of its way to keep it a surprise, with only one vague description that I know of from Vanity Fair:

Last resort: When she realizes the merchants of Qarth are interested only in obtaining her dragons, Dany considers accepting help offered by a warlock. But to reach his leaders, the Undying Ones, she must travel through a complicated stone maze and face mental and physical challenges.

It’s possible the House won’t appear until episode 10, but I doubt it. My guess is the bulk of today’s episode will be the House, then no Dany in the Blackwater episode, and in 10 a brief appearance as she sails to Astapor after escaping.

  • I have always found it odd that people associate all of the scenes Ros is in as hers. To me, she is just a background character. She just happens to be in Littlefinger,Tyrion,Theon,Pycelle, or Joffrey’s scene. She is never the main focus.

  • Hi-Fi,

She’s like the Wedge Antilles of Game of Thrones, only a prostitute instead of an X Wing pilot. But despite the distinction in their professions she knows how to get that proton torpedo in the thermal exhaust port.

Oh man, that was geeky, crass and stupid all at once! Oh well. Apologies for those who I have offended.

  • Well, according to someone who’s keeping track on Westeros.org, Ros has had roughly 11 minutes of screentime so far this season, coming into tonight’s episode. This is near the bottom of the list of major characters.

  • TMWNN:

In the synopsis for ep 10 it says Dany goes to a strange place, I’m thinking ep 10 is going to be HOTU and it will end with the dragons blasting the undying

  • Anyway, some non-Ros-related speculation. I’m still wondering about the nature of Davos’s “reward”. There’s been some speculation that it will be Stannis offering to raise him to Lord and/or name him Hand of the King. However, I’m wondering if perhaps he gets offered a reward by someone else. Now, I think Liam Cunningham said he ends the season in a dungeon, so it can probably be assumed that he goes back to Dragonstone and his fate isn’t left up in the air in the same way that it is in ACoK. What if it’s something like Davos is offered a reward by someone to throw the battle and he refuses, but when he returns to Dragonstone, after the disaster of the Wildfire et al, Mel has told Stannis that she saw Davos betray him in the flames at the Blackwater and that’s why he’s imprisoned, rather than for wanting to kill Melisandre?

I dunno, it will probably end up being what people are speculating about, but I just wanted to talk about something other than Ros.

  • It is embarrassing to read the childish and unwarranted hate for a good actress and a fine character. The only real mark anyone can claim against Ros is that she isn’t in the books. That is it.

Those complaining about her getting naked, which I am pretty sure she hasn’t this season, it is the whole point of premium cable. Bad language and nudity is why the show is on HBO.

  • Claudiu Gherganu,

I am honestly very flattered with the attention you always give me personally (the poster) on every thread I express an opinion in regards to Meera or Ros.

    Thanks! =]

  • J,

I think he will be jailed for wanting to kill Melisandre. Remember Mel’s proclamation to Matthos in episode 2? Death by fire is the purest way to go? Matthos is going to die at the Blackwater and Davos will be gunning for Melisandre.

  • Arthur:
    Claudiu Gherganu,

I am honestly very flattered with the attention you always give me personally (the poster) on every thread I express an opinion in regards to Meera or Ros.

    Thanks! =]

You really come off as one of those people who wouldn’t dare say half the things you do on the internet in person.

  • Looking forward to the House of the Undying and Rattleshirt. Aye, the Lord o’ Bones.

  • Varamyr Fourskins,

Do we really think the HotU is coming tonight? I think a lot of people are setting themselves up for disappoint. I still think it won’t come for another couple of weeks.

  • Scholesy,

Yeah it’s pretty dumb. I’m in the I think she’s hot book so she doesn’t really bother me at all. I just hate how the Littlefinger scene was directed. That’s my only beef with Ros’ scenes.

Arthur makes good points about the show and books quite often but I think even he knows that we all tend to obsess about the things we dislike here more than the what we actually enjoyed.

  • Scholesy,

Yeah, I don’t think they’ll do HOTU until Episode 10. The description for this one says “Dany ignores Jorah’s advice”, so I think she’ll make the decision to go tonight and then we’ll see it in two weeks.

  • Blackfish,

I saw that the other day. Weird and amazing. Apparently when they weren’t helping their brother unite/conquer the seven kingdoms with dragon fire, Visenya and Rhaenys dabbled into the music a bit. Who knew!

  • Arthur:
    Scholesy,
Again, I am flattered at all the attention. =]

Well, you spam every thread with Ros-hate speech and Meera-obsession, so it’s hard to miss you. You’ve earned it, kudos!

While you bitch about Ros, I’ll cheer the fact that she’s in the show and Meera isn’t! ; )

Also, for the poster who tried to “offend” the Ros-haters by calling them gay, I can proudly say I’m a Ros-lover gay man.

  • Joshua Taylor:
    Scholesy,

I have pretty much felt that way about Littlefinger scenes in general this season. Something has felt off about all of them, even the ones I have really enjoyed.

The way they have used him this season just hasn’t worked for me. He has become to obvious within the story.

This. Wedge Antilles surviving all three major battles of the Star Wars trilogy, just a recurring face all the time. There’s problem a dozen Star Wars characters that I could compare Ros to (Jar Jar, Oola etc) but the whole ridiculousness of the Wedge Antilles comparison won. Then the joke was easy.

Enh. It’s not a great joke. As Willow says “I have my own fun.”

  • Hi-Fi,

Not me… I love gay people! =]. But just because I rather see meaningful dialog then Ros nudity doesn’t make me gay, as some other poster tried to imply.

I’m done with this thread. I got to step back and disappear back into the shadows.

I gave my anti-Ros rant and stirred up the thread. My job is done. Personal attacks on myself come with the territory. I’d never personally attack u. You post on this site more then me! Though I disagree with you, I enjoy the discussion.

    Laterz

  • Joshua Taylor,

Oh, that totally makes sense (though I fear Ros won’t survive the game). I’m a Star Wars fan but I never heard of Wedge Antilles. I’m a disgrace to the fandom!

  • Scholesy:

Well, that and her primary role in the series being as a tool for awkward exposition and juvenile titillation. Nudity may not be offensive, but forced, awkward “LOOKIT THE HOT CHICKS” scenes aren’t so much offensive as they are crass and feel like something out of an exploitation movie.

Yeah, given the source material sex and nudity is really not out of place in GoT – its borderline omnipresent in the books as well – but how the show handles it a lot of the time is really not its strong point.

Frankly though, for me its not so much that Ros herself is an issue (Esme Bianco isn’t a bad actress, and I thought the character was fine in the first season) so much as the scenes she’s in, If anything in the worst of them (In my opinion at least) was Littlefinger’s “Shame if something happened” monologue and that had more to do with it being the dramatic equivalent of having Littlefinger eat a puppy while twirling his moustache just to remind the audience he’s the bad guy in the most simplistic way possible than Ros herself.

Ros isn’t a dreadful character, when the scene she’s in isn’t jarringly terrible she can be rather likeable – she’s just more of a tool used for some of the series weakest scenes.

  • Arthur,

I was giving you a hard time, but was hoping the winky face would show it was all in good fun. I don’t believe I personally attacked you, just said your posts tend to generally go in one way. But you’re allowed to talk about whatever you want, as we are allowed to disagree. Internetz and all that.

  • BLARRRRRRRGH and my new job insists I do my orientation TONIGHT from 7:30 – 9:30 (cries)

  • Scholesy,

I dunno, season 2 wise I liked the Cersei/Littlefinger scene and the Ros/Littlefinger scene. I also loved the episode 5 scene when we see Stannis’ armada approaching Renly’s encampment and Littlefinger is watching from the cliffs leading to the Tyrell consult. Great moment. The Tywin/LF scene was great fun too. Loved how Tywin reminds LF of his place.

I think LF knows that everyone thinks he’s Captain Obvious and he is playing on their expectations of him. I think David and Dan realized that LF is pretty much absent for most of book 2 and they had to give him more screen time. Also not every audience demographic appreciates the nuances and subtleties like we do, an LF in the background would probably have come across as boring. They had to amp up his malevolence. And the show needs these audiences to survive.

Could they have directed/written some of his scenes a little better? Definitely.

  • Arthur:
    Tyrion Pimpslap,

If she does play that role and gets killed I will be a very happy GoTs fan…

But I fear Ros will be with us forever. She is D&D’s creators pet.And it really sucks she gets forcibly pushed onto us.

Seriously, people?!? Would you stop already? It’s getting really old! And nobody’s forcing you to watch the show wo if you got a problem with it, just skip it. The writers obviously want her there and we fans sometimes act like GoT is our brainchild. It ISN’T. There’s things bound to get disliked and I firmly believe that if David and Dan spent their time reading the threads and trying to calculate every -ship and -gate into their script, the show would be pretty shi**y to watch.

The bit*hing is really disrespectful towards the actress, as well – and I think it casts a really bad light on the fandom.

It’s an adaptation. I never liked the Sword of Truth series, but I think what they did with the TV series Legend of the Seeker is just … sad. But we don’t even realize that we could have gotten a very similar thing. Sure there are changes … but overall, the adaptation is pretty darn true to the source material.

And I do like Ros. She’s layered and sensitive and resourceful and not just your random fantasy-type prostitute.

AAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I really look forward to (well, it’s not tonight’s for us, Europeans) tomorrow’s episode. I sure hope we get a peek at Reek.

  • ThisIsTheWeepingSong: Well, that and her primary role in the series being as a tool for awkward exposition and juvenile titillation. Those scenes really don’t exist though. The reason the scenes are considered crass is because for some reason some people have a problem with people delivering information while nude. As if this is some unnatural state in ones own bed room or a brothel.

  • So I think the general consensus is that The wildlings have also captured the halfhand and Jon and him will be prisoners together….
    But that doesn’t make sense.
Why specifically put in the last episode, halfhand asking ygritte, if they captured him what would the wildlings do? “If they was nice, they would chop off your head, if they wasn’t, they would kill you slough.”
Why put that in if you are just gonna take em prisoner. It would make them wildlings look like a bunch of civilized pussies, and that back and forth less than pointless.

I have liked plenty of his scenes, especially the one with Cat, but I just feel like last season the characters tone was more on point.

I understand they want to keep the character on screen, I just feel that how they are doing so hasn’t necessarily done the character any favors, even to the wider audience in general. I like to compare it to Tywin, who they have similar found a creative way to keep on screen. Even while expanding on the character, they have not lost what made him such an interesting character in the first season.

  • Two independent plans for defending KL is a recipe for desaster, so I’m wondering how Tyrion will sideline Joffrey. IMHO, his objective in the conversation with Cersei last week was to get her tacit consent for doing just that. She may have been too busy loathing herself to notice the subtext, though. If so, hell will have no fury like a mother betrayed.

  • The DarkStar:

We have no idea what their plans are for those they have captured. Perhaps they have express orders to bring in some of them back.

Kind of like how you and others push her onto the rest of us by bitching about her presence constantly? I swear to god you’d think she was in every scene by the way some of you carry on, there’s way more complaining about Ros than actual Ros scenes.

  • So many babies in this thread. If you seriously can’t stand a character in a television show so much, get the funding to do your own adaptation of A Song of Ice & Fire and forego writing any scripts in lieu of simply using the books. Let me know how that goes for you. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy D&D’s adaptation, made-up (amalgamated, perhaps?) characters and all. Oh, and one last thing: Ros hasn’t been naked in any scene she’s been a part of (notice I didn’t mention any scenes that she was explicitly featured in, as there really aren’t any) this season, so the titillation complaint is a bit off-base. Unless you consider babies being murdered, thinly veiled death threats, and forced sodomy to be “titillating”, of course. In which case, you’ve got bigger problems than worrying yourselves sick over a fictional television character.

Also, Grand Maester Pycelle was General Veers in the Empire Strikes Back, the most efficient and ruthless of the Imperial officers. He was condescending to Vader…and lived! He appears at 2:25. http://youtu.be/ZR_lCObJVJk

Theon’s theme is amazing. Overall the score for this season is exemplary. But this is my favourite piece:

    http://youtu.be/HzuhbYQM1IY
This piece captures the creepy, powerful mystiquie of Melisandre, and the grinding down, relentlessness of Stannis. I frigging love it.

  • Oooh I love the smell of misogyny in the afternoon.

    Okay not really.

Tonight’s going to be crazy. I like not knowing exactly what’s going to happen anymore.

  • Ahhhh! These 8 weeks have flown by :( I don’t want this show to leave, good thing I have the books to catch up on.

  • My prediction is that Sansa gets no scenes this episode and we begin to question why Dontos Hollard was even cast.

  • DB,

I think the Dontos stuff will happen next season, which makes you wonder why they even cast the part this season. I think the actor has claimed that they cut some of his scenes, namely one with him in the throne room when Joffrey orders Sansa to be beat. Maybe they weren’t too thrilled with the actor?

  • It does really seem that HotU will not be until episode 10, according to the synopsis. The only story line I’ve had a problem with in Season 2 is Dany’s. Maybe it’s because I’ve read the books and know what’s coming, but it’s just seemed to drag on in the series, whereas the rest of the threads are moving well. Can’t wait for Alan Taylor’s episode tonight.
And my Husband thinks each episode should be 2 hours long, and should go directly into Season 3 (filming be damned, evidently). Maybe he should read the books? um, yeah.

  • If HotU doesn’t happen tonight, does that mean ser barristan won’t save the day on the docks this season? I assumed that was how her story was going to end this season – with a shot of Barristan as Dany’s savior because the audience will know who he is

  • Another leaked audition tape. I am not sure which role.
I put a link on the Leaked audition for Edmure thread.
Hurry up, before the video is taken down.

  • I wish certain people would just STFU complaining about Ros, already. It’s getting really juvenile.

I mean, unless theres actually something new to say, instead of just the tired old grinding. You hate Ros – we know. It’s not interesting anymore.

  • Zack: How many book pages were spent on the character of Alayaya and what she gets up to, prior to that scene?

And how many minutes of Game of Thrones have been spent (thusfar….since we know there is more to come) on Ros?

Hopefully you see what I’m getting at. The character isn’t “pointless” but she’s a waste of precious time for whatever impact she will ultimately have.

I would have rather had Alayaya introduced in a series of perhaps 3 under five minute scenes, than the show’s method of spending time mistakenly thinking everybody is tuning in to see softcore porn rather than watch a story unfold, and we get a Ros-porn scene every other episode.

How many scenes have we had that were focused on Ros?

Oh right, one. Which was a lead in to the baby murdering scene. All the others have other characters who are the draw, and Ros is just there. If people would look past the fact that she’s there they might just realize there’s another character that’s being explored. While I think the “play with her arse” scene was several degrees too far, the character of Ros is a minor character who barely appears, and when she does it’s to show how other characters respond to her, not to showcase her personality or goals. I swear the problem is that they named the character, if no one was up in arms at them making up a charater people would just be like “oh it’s that one prostitute”, not “OMFG I HAVE TO WATCH TWO MINUTES OF THEON TALKING TO SOMEONE WHO WASN’T IN THE BOOK”.

  • Threads like this are why I stopped coming to this site. I thought there might be an interesting pre-show conversation going on, but alas it’s just some jackass crying about Ros over and over. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

  • Is the actor who plays the Greyjon still with the show? I just think it’s odd that the only Northern Lord whose name we heard last season has been so conspicuously absent all year.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap:
    DB,

Wouldn’t surprise me at all, he was extremely underwhelming in his one scene thus far.

  • Over at westeros some folks think that Dagmar is Ramsay I think this is completely absurd. What do you guys think?

  • nightwolf,

That it’s complete rubbish and about as likely as Ariel the Mermaid taking over Winterfell with an army of sea creatures.

  • nightwolf,

He’s not Ramsay, but he has been given some of Reek’s stuff from ‘ACOK’. I think Ramsay will appear in the finale in full armor, sort of like Jaqen appeared in the finale last year. They’ll keep his face covered. They won’t cast the part until next season.

  • Outside of the purists who loathe anything that deviates from the books, I’ve never understood the outright hatred for Ros. People act like they’ve never seen a pair of titties before (FYI: sex isn’t just a device in storytelling, it’s real).

You would’ve thought her neighbor’s cow stopped giving milk, based on the Salem-esque reactions to her lesbian scene from last season. I actually expected the opposite sort of reaction, but I guess some of the people on this board can’t appreciate the finer things in life.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

I agree he has definitely taken Reek’s duties, and I can see him pulling a betrayal but he’s not Ramsay.

Yea like what they did with Michi in walking dead, I can see that.

  • Happy Birthday Lex! I enjoyed your recent stints on the podcast btw, congrats.

I think tonight will be awesome – I can’t wait to see Yara/ Asha tell Theon off.

  • Cannot wait for tonight! It’s like a holiday!
Hoping Jon’s story gets straightened out tonight, so it will all make sense in my mind!
Not that anyone cares, but Ros is alright in my book( although she is not IN the books)-she is really never the focus of the story being told, it seems that her character is used as a tool to showcase other characters
But yes, who cares really….more exciting things to come…did I mention how excited I am for this episode tonight?!? :)

  • Weren’t there rumors of Jason Momoa and Sean Bean being on set for season 2? I think I remember reading something about that on the internet while they were filming. I’m hoping for the season finale there is a Khal Drogo appearance during the House of The Undying and maybe a Ned Stark appearance in one of Brans dreams.

  • First of all, Happy Birthday Lex (way to beg, dude).

Second, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Esmé Bianco.
She plays the role as well as humanly possible.
    She is beautiful and talented.
It is her character, Ros, that I HATE, HATE, HATE.

    //1960s movie reference//

I wish. I wish. I wish Ros was a fish.
‘Cause fishes have a better life than trollops.

    //end 1960s movie reference//

But, I digress. Esmé clearly needs her own HBO show. One in which she is done by Dominic West. Repeatedly. I miss Dominic West. Speaking of redheads done by Dominic West, whatever happened to Deirdre Lovejoy?

    Okay, back to business.

“Theon receives a visitor.” Who else hopes we get a Yara bitchslap of Theon?

“Arya calls in her final debt with Jaqen.” Who knows? The way this is going it could be anyone.

“Robb is betrayed.” Three letters: N. C. W.

“Tyrion and Varys find common ground. ” I hope it’s chain-related.

“Dany ignores Jorah’s advice.” And then she realizes that the last door on the left is also the first door on the right, baby!

    “Stannis and Davos…” Probably Blackwater-related.

  • I love love love the show, it may vary a wee bit from the book
BUT HBO CAST AND CREW ARE DOING A FANTASTIC JOB
    BRAVO KUDOS TO ALL
AND TY FOR THE BEST SHOW ON TV :)

  • Imp_Slap!,

that is a very good observation! Where IS the GreatJohn? You’d think they’d at least keep him in the background. Maybe laughing at Rob’s attempts at flirting! He’s certainly more fun than Roose Notlob. I mean, Bolton.

  • Dany’s arc must include her retribution against Ducksauce, the despicable thief of her babies. This must happen after the HotU when she and her dragons, despite their tiny size, will rain “fire and blood” down upon him so she can grab the key to his amazing vault, thereby funding her efforts in season 3. (There must be a reason why D&D set an entire scene in front of this fabulous door.) Dany’s triumph and subsequent enrichment would be a most satisfying denoument to this season.
Regarding the rage against Ros: I’m resigned to her presence. She has a beautiful body and exquisite skin, and, though a life-long hetero female, I can appreciate this beauty in another. I also believe that she’s kept clothed all season 2 because of her apparent condition, so we can expect she’ll disrobe again in season 3.

  • I like how a while back I said a girl in one of those parody/music videos was fat and the comment was deleted for being being a “personal attack” or something, even though it wasn’t directed at a poster and was…well, true…but here we have personal insults flying left and right.

  • House Snow,
Agreed … he also admitted to sending Joffrey a whore (which again, was Ros)

Also, wasn’t Alayaya very badly beaten, not actually killed?

  • Jillybean: Imp_Slap!, that is a very good observation! Where IS the GreatJohn? You’d think they’d at least keep him in the background. Maybe laughing at Rob’s attempts at flirting! He’s certainly more fun than Roose Notlob. I mean, Bolton.

I’m sure its logistics. I doubt the show wants to hire a guy to do nothing for a year and I’m sure the actor didn’t want to stand around and do nothing for year. Its probably why minor characters like Irri and the tickler get killed off, so the show doesn’t have to worry about something coming up like it did for oldMountain, and rarhako.

  • Quel horreur! Ros n’est pas si gênant cette saison! Je pense que… [coughs and gags]

Aughhh! Spontaneous Frenchitis strikes again! Where is the frakking EDIT button?!

  • Lex,

    Hey Lex,

What podcast(s) are you on regarding GoTs?

I have been subscribing to a bunch and really enjoy them…

And Happy Birthday (though I only know you from your posts). Hope you are having a great weekend!

  • Arya Dunyett,

I appreciate her body type, which is suited for the show. Her complexion is also a good fit. She doesn’t have a tellingly modern physique, her shape is a bit more ambiguous than that.

  • Sir Pounce,

Some of us are game for a little pre-Game discussion. Feel free to shoot first. I usually don’t have much to say on the show until after I’ve seen the episode.

  • Arthur,

I was on two recent episodes of A Podcast of Ice and Fire. It’s mostly based on the books (although they do HBO episode reviews), and is full of dirty humour. In my opinion, it’s by far the best ASOIAF podcast out there (and that’s coming from someone who was heavily critical of them last year).

I was critical last year, because I only heard one episode (out of context) when they were being quite critical of the show (they tend to be on the purist side of things). It takes a few episodes to get used to their sense of humour, and the personalities of the hosts. They’re close to 80 episodes now (they really started getting good around Episode 32, when our very own Phil/WiC was a guest… FaB has also been a guest numerous times).

I’d recommend listening to their recent Guys Night Out episodes, or their ADWD review episodes.

    http://podcastoficeandfire.com/

  • It’s funny how people hate Ros but they don’t hate D&D who wrote her. It’s not actresses fault, she just acts what they wrote for her. Esme Bianco is a good actor, but D&D are not very good writers. But hey, let’s criticize her cuz we can’t criticize D&D, who are considered gods in the GoT community.

  • Lex,

Awesome I will definitely give it a listen and subscribe. I like humor of all kinds.

    Thanks for the info!

  • Jonas Jakobsen:
    Steven Swanson,

How was he underwhelming? Because he didn’t look like he was described? I don’t see anything wrong with his performance.

He looked the part well enough but he hardly seemed drunk and barely seemed bumbling. This is partly the writers’ fault, I suppose, as he didn’t have quite as memorable an entrance as in the book, but he really seemed to have no screen presence whatsoever, such that pretty much the only thing I saw people mentioning was his Captain Americaesque breastplate. If/when he does reappear I’m guessing most non-readers will have completely forgotten who he is.

  • Arthur,

It really is the best podcast! The hosts feel like friends after 80 episodes and I find myself wondering what they’ll think of various changes as I watch. The episodes with WiC and FaB are great, and they sometimes have Alex from Tower of the Hand on too. The Guys Night Outs are hilarious, but the Girl’s Night Out eps are great too – especially the most recent one.

I strongly recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor!

  • If Ros turns up in Winterfell in her distress while LF is away and throws herself at Theon who ‘didn’t want to pay for it’ instead of being the prostitute that Cersei kidnaps then you know for definite that Dagmer is Ramsay and he’s gonna ‘ave ‘er. Even if she doesn’t the chance is high. The actors playing Dagmer/highly possible Ramsay (Ineson) and Roose(McElhatton) look alike and are playing the roles similar. They’ve just got rid of the reek plot line cause it’s too much to explain and wouldn’t come across well told in retrospect (the abductions and why he ended up in that jail as Reek.)

They’ve built up the ‘bastard’ coming to get Theon and they will reveal him as a sadist and sneak enjoying seeing how far Theon would go, just as Ramsay should be revealed. All they have to explain is that he was sent by his father to tail Theon’s journey to the Iron Islands. They can keep Ramsay as a renegade dark bastard in opposition to the idea of the ideal bastard in Jon Snow and this way they can keep the Roose betrayal extra specially shocking at the RW. Despite the fact that they are looking for a cast a 20-30 year old with an unusual look, I think this version is highly likely.

BTW the people that are saying that the actor playing Ramsay is older than the actor Roose are almost certainly confusing the age of Michael McElhatton (37) the footballer with the age of the actor Michael McElhatton playing Roose. The guy playing Roose could easily pass for 50′s and the guy playing Ramsay could pass for 30′s.

  • Ugh, there’s a near total eclipse (80 something percent) happening right when Game of Thrones is happening…I think I’ve found the one thing that will push my watching of an episode to later…

  • Queensmoot,

The thing I like most about listening to these podcasts. Is, just like this thread for instance, there are usally arguments about both small issues and large issues that parallel the same kind of comments that are here. (Though there are no personal attacks).

It’s funny when a wedge issue comes up. You have 2 kinds of posters. Those that argue and debate the GoTs topic being brought up. And those that attack the poster for bringing up the topic.

The great thing about podcasts is that it filters out all the personal attacks and there is a meaningful discussion on the hot topics that we all are so familiar with and staked out our sides.

I enjoy listening to them very much and hear people make very small, yet important points that I never thought of.

  • Eos: Stop being vocal about opinions you have that I disagree with! Only speak up after you’ve checked with me to find my opinion.

    No thanks :)

  • the only scenes I’m looking forward this season is as to how they will show the ‘House of the Undying’ and what the Undying show Dany. Apart from this the blackwater battle scenes.

I hope they show the visions from the ‘House of the Undying’ tonight. I’m hoping big I know but I guess that won’t happen now after reading all comments. I guess it’l happen by episode 10.

  • Arthur,

I’ve never heard a man complain so loudly about boobies. Do you hold a glass with your pinkie out as well?

  • KaMrAnAhMeD:

At first I had expected them to do HotU this episode, what with how E17 ended, but with these official synopses I’m prepared to wait for episode 20 to see it. Kind of a bummer but I’m sure it will still be great. I just don’t know how they’re going to do any Dany scenes apart from that one, so we might be in for a week or two of no Dany :(

  • Speaking of Dany, what the hell happened to Doreah? Where is she? It must be important, because D & D changed things so that she did not die in the Red Waste, and I doubt they would do that if she didn’t have a role to play… Is she one of the Three Treasons (three treasons you shall know. one for blood, one for love, one for gold)? And if so, which one would she replace? I mean, we already had one for blood (Mirri Maz Duur), and they can’t change the one for love (Ser Jorah) and while they could make her the one for gold (who is presumably Brown Ben Plumm) it would not make much sense unless Xaro was promised to, say, give her they key to that vault

  • Not really into the PoIaF. I prefer the Bjork Brothers podcasts.
    Orp,

McElhatton does look fiftyish, but Ralph Ineson is 42, and couldn’t pass for much younger than late thirties. If they had switched it to be a bastard brother, I could live with it, but they’re just so close in age, it’s a bit ridiculous if that is what they intend. I can overlook it because I like the actors, but it’ll be a stretch.

  • Ours is the Fury,

I don’t really listen to the Bjork Brothers, but they did use my GOT guitar rendition last year (and gave me a shout-out), so they’re super cool by me! :D

  • Speaking of podcasts, I forgot that there was a WIC.net podcast last year! They called it the “first annual” one, and FaB made much talk of declaring war between House Gatewatch (us) and House Manwoody (apoiaf). We need another episode!

  • Ours is the Fury: McElhatton does look fiftyish, but Ralph Ineson is 42, and couldn’t pass for much younger than late thirties. I’m with you. It’s one of those things where the logic seems tricky, but it’s not worth overthinking to me because both actors bring a lot to the table, and I’m sure it will be fun to watch.

But I don’t see the show going that route just because, yeah, their ages are obviously awfully close to play father-son believably. Anyway I don’t think we’ll find out one way or the other until the season finale, because tonight Theon’s scenes are likely to be focused around Asha. Regardless, his scenes tonight are my second most anticipated, after Arya’s.

  • Critical Geek: there’s a near total eclipse (80 something percent) happening right when Game of Thrones is happening

Eh. Solar Eclipse? You know you’re not supposed to look at it. In that way it’s sort of like Ros.

Astronomical events ain’t got shit on GoT!

    6 minutes.

  • Mike Chair: Eh.Solar Eclipse? You know you’re not supposed to look at it.In that way it’s sort of like Ros.

Astronomical events ain’t got shit on GoT!

    6 minutes.

To quote Tyrion… I like you!

  • Can’t wait to see Rattleshirt among other things. But the clip I saw of him looks badass.

  • it’s a bit ridiculous if that is what they intend. I can overlook it because I like the actors, but it’ll be a stretch.

Same with me. Ineson’s little evil smiles screams Ramsay and any decent cover for anything questionable they throw at us regarding this change i’ll be more than willing to accept. I think he’ll nail it if that’s what they’ve decided.

There’s a massive finale for Winterfell (the sacking almost certainly) that involves Dagmer and Theon. These changes quite often seem ridiculous until the audience see’s them played out and up to now I think their streamline changes have been efficient and entertaining for time constraints and the fact it’s for the screen. It will also genuinely shock a lot of book readers which will be interesting because most around these parts don’t believe in the theory. If he’s not Ramsay i’ll be more shocked at the moment.

It will be super hard to set up Ramsay properly next season if this isn’t it. They’ve avoided the prison, abduction of Lady Hornwood, Reek subplot and they’ve killed Rodrick but set up a shock potential betrayal with the likely Dagmer ruse. Also, it’s set up without giving too much away about Bolton’s potentially switching sides outright. It’s less battling Rodrick Stark troops outside and more demented, personal and sociopathic.

  • Yara/Asha rips into Theon (yay) and then shows she actually cares too. Alfie looks like a weasel to me, which is pretty appropriate.

Now Robb and Talisa/Jeyne are bantering and making googly eyes at each other. YMMV.

  • Yes! We finally get the “How can you be brave when you’re afraid” “That’s the only time you can be brave” line from Ned…although delivered by another…

  • J:
    Ser Mandon Moore exists??

He’s a named extra like a few of the other kingsguard, or like Beric was last season.

  • Best tweet: —>>
#GameOfThrones is the only story I know of in which knowing that a character, any character, is alive, at any point, is considered a spoiler

  • Yeah, where IS the god of tits and wine? Thank you, Tyrion. That’s a religion I can get behind.

  • Lol, the Robb/Talissa stuff was SO gooey, but the inner romantic in me made me hug my dear mother and fake sob. A little disappointed that Arya didn’t kill that guard at the gate. That was a smart thing she did there in the books, but I suppose she doesn’t have the coin yet.

Tyrion and Shae… oh lawd. I keep screaming at the television, run Tyrion! Ruuuunnn! She’s a hoee!

  • Ok so how heterosexual were Stannis and Davos this episode you guys.

“Half the men in Storm’s End wanted to kiss you that night.”
“I was relieved they did not”

  • don’t you love how they made most of the women say the word ‘cunt’ as an insult? like no D&D it doesn’t make it any less misogynistic when you make a woman say it, especially when she never said that word in the books anyway

  • Ok, that scene with Varys talking to Tyrion about Dany… was he trying to see if he should let Tyrion in on the whole “Young Griff”/Aegon thing? I think he might have been… Also, in the scene with Jaime and Brienne, was that the BwB on the bridge in the background. On another note, GREAT acting by Dinklage in the scene with Cersei and Daisy! And they actually kept one of Arya’s names the same! Additionally, I loved the look on Jorah’s face when Dany asked if he remembers when she stepped into the fire and he says he’ll never forget, as well as his expression when he tells her he would die for her… total shipping fuel! But all of that is nothing compared when she reaches out and touches his cheek. He’s all “must…not…react…to the fact that she is touching my cheek… must…not…let…feelings…show…” (he failed miserably at that last part though –the character, not the actor). Now THAT was shipping fuel! Actually, all of the interactions between Jorah and Dany in this episode were fuel for shippers…

  • SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo disappointed in tonight’s episode.

It was fantastic, but I really wanted some HotU, Weasel Soup, or AT LEAST Jon v Qhorin (but at least they’re not abandoning that part of Jon’s story, thank R’hollor).

Now I’m going to have GoT blue-balls for a whole week. Yes, Ygritte, BBs are a real thing, and now I have them.

Oh, and how many non-readers are going to RIOT when Joff doesn’t die this season? My dad might punch me because I keep hinting that its coming soon. yeah, I’m a dick,I know.

  • DB:

What’s the big deal with cunt? People can call people dicks and cocks as an isult and nobody would bat an eye.

  • J:
I guess Stannis’s wife isn’t a Florent in the show.

Why? TV!Stannis maybe married Selyse earlier

  • Roger Kevin Dering: What’s the big deal with cunt? People can call people dicks and cocks as an isult and nobody would bat an eye.

It is no big deal. I don’t know what that guy is talking about. This story has more strong women in it then any other TV show I’ve ever seen before- I wouldn’t exactly be playing the sexist card at this juncture.

  • Wow, a great episode once again! One word” OOOOnaaaa! LOL! Wow, I’m proud to say that we have one of the coolest, sexiest, most talented cast of actresses on TV! My goodness… Natalia Tena…always, wondered, as did Theon apparently, what she had under those clothes…and what she does, me likeeee LOL!

Those lines alone, which Tyrion utters with such deadly conviction to Cercei, make the episode worth watching, the rest is just gravy…
