Casting Rumors Speculation

Season three casting in full swing

Casting continues for season three of Game of Thrones. In fact, we have heard whispers of a few roles already being filled. Presumably once the contracts are ironed out, we will receive an announcement.

Another leaked audition (that has since been taken down) showed a French actor auditioning for the role of Mero, aka the Titan’s Bastard, captain of the sellsword company, the Second Sons. We already know they are casting Daario, now it looks like at least one other sellsword captain will be cast.

Another audition report comes from Twitter, where actor Cas Anvar tweets that he has an audition for Game of Thrones tomorrow. Which role do you think he is auditioning for? Daario? The Red Viper? Speculate away!

  • He looks absolutely perfect for the Red Viper, but I’d need to see him hamming it up first to be sure.

  • Daario is going to be quite a tricky role to fill. Hope they can make his charisma and appeal to Dany more convincing onscreen than it was in the books.

  • He’s a bit old to be auditioning for Daario, so my hope is they’re casting Oberyn. It’d be a relief to know they are in fact looking for Middle Eastern actors for the Martells.

  • I think it is Daario.
Although I can see him as Viper with no problem.
If they are decided to introduce Martells earlier it could be Viper, if not, Viper is going to be cast in S4.

  • Yay, these were always my favourite threads to read, glad to have them back. I vaguely remember Cas Anvar from Shattered Glass, but that’s it. My guess is that he’s going for the Red Viper, rather than Daario.

  • I’m confident in their casting choices so I’ll hold off on speculation for now, but I’m more curious about how they’re going to handle his lady-swords and that awesomely ridiculous blue beard.

  • I wonder what the budget is for Season 3, the same or higher? Being a non-book reader, I’m not sure if the 1st half of Storm of Swords needs an even bigger budget or not. And I’m assuming those dragons will eventually become quite large and it will be dissapointing if they are Syfy channel quality. And I’ve heard tell of even more fantastical creatures showing up eventually.

  • Richard,

Been a while since I read the third book, but I can’t recall there being any big battles. The second season of GoT has a 15% budget raise just for the Blackwater episode. So maybe the season 3 budget will be somewhere between season 1 and 2?

  • Are they going to recast the role of Beric Dondarion or do they plan on bringing back the guy from season 1?

  • He looks like Oberyn, but I think S3 is too soon for Martells. But then again it all depends where they decide to end it.
    Maybe Grey Worm?

  • Cas doesn’t look like a Daario to me. Perhaps Grey Worm, the chosen commander of the Unsullied? He would also make a decent Red Viper.

  • The Rabbit,

Oberyn does arrive before the red wedding, which seems to be a general consensus ending/ep 9 of season 3 (the weddings are a logical ending to the season) so I expect we’ll get to meet Oberyn before the season is out. They’ll probably introduce him a little early too so we can get a feel for his character and have some Martell exposition.

  • Sorry, forgot to put spoilers in my previous post, could a mod help me out? Can’t seem to edit it.

  • As far as budgets go, Season 3 probably won’t have any single scenes as big as Blackwater, but there’s a fair amount of wights, bigger dragons, the Lightning Lord, and a lot of new sets. And, they are going to need to save all they can for the end of Season 4. I’m not going to cry over the lack of Tyrion’s chain , but I would really miss a giant trying crawl under the Wall and a field of flaming mammoths.

  • Dogmayor,

I’ve got my fingers crossed for The Red Wedding to open Season 4 – a stronger, more surprising placement, I think – and the Purple Wedding to end up in ep 7 or 8 of Season 4. Tyrion’s wedding (does that have a color?) I’m assuming will be towards the late middle of Season 3.

  • It would be interesting if the guy who plays Sayid’s brother on LOST gets the Red Viper role, since so many folks had Naveen Andrews in mind for Oberyn. Either one would be good!

  • Morgan King,

The good thing is that the (book 3 ) giants are humanoid, so they can apply heavy make up and prosthetics on a bulky actor, put him in front of a green screen and insert him into the scene. Like they did with the direwolves in season 2.

  • my first thought was Daario. but Grey Worm would be cool too. I agree that Naveen Andrews would be a nice Oberyn!

    Carne,

Sean Harris would be a awesome Beric, but he’s pretty engaged in The Borgias, so I don’t see this happening (unless he dies in this season, which I think improbable)

EDIT: Cas Anvar posted this on his facebook page “Auditioning for Game Of Thrones tomorrow here in London! So excited!! I would kill to Be on that show!! ;) gotta hit the gym!! Lol”
if he needs to hit the gym, I think it’s more likely he’s auditioning for Grey Worm, since he’s the characther (between Oberyn, Daario and Grey Worm) that has the most built up body. right?

  • My favorite kind of thread!

I wonder if they’ll introduce Dorne a bit early in the timeline. I’d actually like that.

Can’t wait for official announcements to be made.

  • Morgan King,

Having two such major events in the same season would be a bad idea in my opinion. That leaves little for season 3.

RW for episode 9 or10 in season 3 and PW for episode the middle of season 4 would be my guess.

  • Whenever you can cast Egyptian Interpol Officer #1 from Transformers in the show, you have to do it. He totally out-acted Egyptian Interpol Officer #2. Egyptian Interpol Officer #2 should be embarrassed of himself.

  • Carne,

Don’t forget that there are two major events happening on the wall as well. The first attack, when Ygritte says goodbye, and the big war with Stannis arrival. : )

Oh, man. It’s gonna be so much fun.

  • Thiago Slash,

    Aw ;(

Maybe they’re filming season 3 of “The Borgias” earlier than GoT season 3? He wouldn’t be needed for a lot of episodes. 2-3 maybe?

  • The Rabbit:
    I think it is Daario.
Although I can see him as Viper with no problem.
If they are decided to introduce Martells earlier it could be Viper, if not, Viper is going to be cast in S4.

I’m re-reading Book 3 (for the eleventieth time) and the Red Viper just showed up. He’s a guest at Joffrey’s wedding. Unless, of course, Book 3 is too big for one season & they split it up.

  • Ever since reading the books, I’ve pictured Cliff Curtis as the Red Viper. I too pictured someone with dark skin, and I think he would be perfect for the role (he was one of the centaurs in the Hercules series lol).

  • Cas Anvar seems too young to be the Red Viper, but I can’t find any info on his actual age. So i’ll assume he’s older than he looks. Would be nice to get a Canadian on the show! He has worked with some big names already, including our Tywin, Charles Dance. He says he needs to hit the gym. I don’t remember the Viper ever having to take his shirt off. He may be called in for it, but he could easily be cast in some of the other roles in Dany’s storyline.

  • I’d like to see Jason Mamoa back for Daario, with the right change in hair and make-up he would be perfect.

Mark strong has always been The Red Viper for me but I can’t really see it happening… which is a shame…

  • He doesn’t seem to have been in many things I’ve seen, but from his look it seems he could pull off Oberyn.

  • Isn’t it a little early for The Red Viper?

Maybe a season 4, more likely a season 5 casting but season 3? Isn’t this way to early?

  • Nick Larter: Thoros

Thoros is supposed to be older and round, balding…though many of the book descriptions have been ignored so maybe. However, when I look at Cas Anvar, I see either Daario (with contact lenses) or The Red Viper, Oberyn Martell.

  • Cas Anvar looks like he would fit any of those roles. For some reason, even though he’s too young and a bit obscure, I always pictured Rami Malek (Night at the Museum) as the Red Viper. Don’t know if he has the acting chops, and is probably too young, but that’s just who I pictured when reading it.
Cas Anvar looks very promising for the Red Viper, though!

  • Hello WiC readers,

Back in the season 3 open casting thread, Morbo recommended Saïd Taghmaoui (La Haine, Hidalgo, Traitor, GI Joe, Conan the Barbarian, Lost) as Oberyn Martell. Taghmaoui has also worked on a BBC/HBO co-produced drama, House of Saddam, which has been compared to The Sopranos, namely, “The Sopranos with Scud missiles.” In any case… for those of you aren’t familiar with the actor, he looks like this – incredibly attractive and bodily fit for The Red Viper. ;) I thought it a genius suggestion, especially given his acting chops, and I want to contact his agent to encourage Taghmaoui to audition for the role. I heard WiC readers are more experienced at successfully contacting actors’ agents for GoT roles. So how would/should I go about doing this? I would appreciate any advice.

Hopefully this isn’t off-topic, but I didn’t know where else to post this… Feel free to delete this comment, if need be.

    Thanks,
    Dahnfe

  • Arthur:
Isn’t it a little early for The Red Viper?

Maybe a season 4, more likely a season 5 casting but season 3?Isn’t this way to early?

I think the key stuff will all happen in season 4, but he could be introduced in 3. No way Tyrion’s trial is delayed until season 5. It’ll be in season 4.

  • spacechampion: Cas Anvar seems too young to be the Red Viper, but I can’t find any info on his actual age.

Cas Anvar could also be auditioning for Daario. This is from Winter in an earlier post, “And, according to someone who has seen the casting breakdown, the producers are looking for ‘any ethnicity, except Caucasian’.”

  • Jillybean,

Maybe Quentyn, waaaaay too young for Oberyn.

    Dahnfe,

I haven’t kept up with Taghmaoui’s career but holy hell La Haine was great and he was great in it. I’m intrigued.

  • Dahnfe,

While I always imagined the Martells as darker, I think I’m in the minority- based on what most people here say he looks the part. I can certainly believe he’s produced plenty of bastard daughters!

  • Northern Irish actor Andrew Simpson (Notes on a Scandal) auditioning for role of Ramsay Snow.

  • Carne,

No way! The first half of Book 3 is packed with awesome stuff, and I can’t think of anything more essential to selling the shock and horror of the Red Wedding like making sure it’s unexpected. If Cat and Robb are riding into The Twins for another boring wedding towards the end of the season, everyone will be at maximum suspicion for something coming. Also, closing the season with it actually might prove alienating for saddened viewers who don’t have the promise of the next 2 months to see how it resolves. I don’t doubt that’s partially why GRRM put it in the middle of the book, too

As far as sweet stuff for Season 3 (so many SPOILERS), you’ve got:
    * Jaime and Brienne’s adventures with the Brave Companions and Jaime loses his hand!
    * The betrayal of the Night’s Watch at Craster’s Keep, Sam and Cold Hands!
    * Ramsay Snow doing anything!
    * Davos is imprisoned for trying to kill Melisandre!
    * Dany frees the Unsullied and dragons melt faces and she’s greeted as Mother after she frees Yunkai!
    * Arya and the gang, as well as The Hound, meet up with Thoros, Beric and the Brotherhood!
    * Jon with the wildlings – Mance, Varamyr, Rattleshirt and more Ygritte, AND Jon’s escape when Ygritte shoots him!
    * Sansa’s plotting with the Queen of Thorns, Ser Dontos, and Tyrion’s marriage
    * Cat, Edmure, the Blackfish at the funeral at Riverrun, and Robb’s wedding
    * way more Bran warging, including warging into Hodor
    * The Red Viper arrives to kill The Mountain
    * Littlefinger marries Lysa
    * Robb has to behead some Karstarks
    * lots of Tywin and Joffrey being dicks to each other (and everybody else)!

  • Luke-Warm Hands,

The racial politics of that for American viewers would be cray-zy. That could be really fun and/or positive, and the racial politics might be a little crazy anyway (Dany’s clearly got some baggage there from Drogo), but I bet it’s scary for them to cast a black man as Daario. He’s just so lusted after and Dany is so white. However they handle that will be really interesting to see.

For the record, I’m not saying that would be bad at all, but if Daario ends up being pretty white or ethnically ambiguous, I’ll certainly be curious about how that casting went. I don’t want to overplay this; it sounds like they’ve taken a “best actor for the role” approach in general, and I don’t think they’d mind being seen as controversial. And how controversial that would be is definitely changing. It’ll just be interesting.

  • OMER JARRAH! Hah, he was a really minor character but I was a HUGE LOST fan when it was on. He looks pretty close to what I always imagined of the Red Viper. I always associate Dorne with a Persian aesthetic and culture. I think he looks a tad too old for Daario, but who knows.

And I’m all for more North Americans on Game of Thrones!

  • Tom BDil:
Northern Irish actor Andrew Simpson (Notes on a Scandal) auditioning for role of Ramsay Snow.

Assuming this is true, they really are casting young for Ramsay. Much younger than I thought.

  • Any thoughts on what role might be good for Tahar Rahim? His performance in A Prophet was pretty unbelievable and I’d love to see him get some meaty role.

He’s too young and maybe not quite handsome enough for Oberyn, and I think he’d be wasted on Quentyn (though he’d do the awkwardness of that character well). I see him as quieter and less flamboyant but deeply compelling, a little stoic and a little awkward but also menacing and at the same time relatable. Maybe if Darkstar is fleshed out a little more on the show, but that’s pretty unlikely (and probably not a good thing).

  • Winter Is Coming

Winter Is Coming: Assuming this is true, they really are casting young for Ramsay. Much younger than I thought.

Exactly my thoughts. It kinda makes sense, if its true, that he would be around the same age as Robb, Jon, and Theon. Interesting

    AB

  • I think casting Ramsay as really young is a good look. He’ll be creepier and his crazy evilness will be more interesting that way. I think.

  • OtherAndrew, I didn’t actually get to see it when it was up. The Rabbit posted it in the leaked Edmure audition thread and by the time I went to watch it was already taken down. A bunch of other people saw it and can probably fill you in on the details, but from what I understand Mero was talking with Daario about how he wants to “woo” Dany.

  • I think the general story demands that the Red Viper HAS to be in Season 3, but I also think that Season 3 will end at a different place than most.

I think Season 3 will end with Joffrey’s wedding and exit.
Nothing against the Red Wedding, but you can’t/shouldn’t end the season on a downer. You need a triumph, aka Dragons being born, Robb being named King, Tyrion becoming Hand of the King Defeating the House of the Undying, etc.
I think that the Red Wedding and Jon’s defense of the Wall (aka, bye bye Ygritte) are downers.

Is Dany’s taking of Astapor or Yunk City going to be the high point? Maybe

But what will inspire the audience’s clapping and cheering than saying goodbye to Joff and Sansa’s escape.

Then Season 4 would be Tyrion’s trial & Mance Rayder’s attack on the Wall.

  • I think Cas Anvar would make a great Red Viper! Oberyn has adult daughters (and don’t forget ppl got kids much earlier back then), so I imagine him being around 35-40, having a “middle-east” look, being very handsome, lithe and fit.

  • SerCountryFriedSteak,

I agree with your assessment of where series 3 should end. Plus, after this year the audience will be used to the idea of a big event in episode 9 followed by the fallout- so change it up with a big event slightly earlier and another one in the finale.

If Robb’s wedding doesn’t happen in the remaining two episodes of this year, we’d have a series with 4 different weddings next year. All with very different outcomes. That could be an interesting theme.

  • SerCountryFriedSteak,

My money’s on saving Joffrey’s death for Season 4, if only because that, and the aftermath, is the logical place to end the series if they don’t get the budget or contracts locked down for Seasons 5-8 or 9 (or perhaps even if GRRM has trouble getting Winds of Winter finished in time for preproduction).

Oh Yes!! Saïd Taghmaoui is a great character actor, and he has all the swagger and charisma required to make a brilliant Red Viper. I would love to see him in the role.

As for contacting his agents, Saïd is represented (as far as I could find, anyway) by Agence Aura in France.

  • SerCountryFriedSteak,

The way they structure the seasons (which they seem to be sticking with) is the big scene happens in episode 9 (red wedding) and then the aftermath in episode 10 which could be Tyrion’s wedding to Sansa and some fallout. Maybe they’ll open season 4 with the battle at the Wall but i’m hazy on the order of things in ASOS.

Anyway i expect much more things being moved around and more deviations from the book. Also that actor looks like a Red Viper to me, Dornish people were alway middle eastern/Indian in my mind.

  • Mirri Maz,

“The way they structure the seasons (which they seem to be sticking with) is the big scene happens in episode 9″

Which is exactly why they need to change it up a little, so it’s not a predictable formula! Season 2 has handled it well, by building up to the battle all season. It wouldn’t work as well for an ostensibly surprising event, though.

  • I think it is Viper.
Am on mobile version so I dont know how to spoiler proof my post.
I think a certain event having to do with vine and hairstyles not to mention the supine and canine community will be in the next season. One always thinks it is at the end.
They don’t have to go by chronology so much, in fact that event coule be used to trigger that other event imvolving mediocre musicians and “embroidering”

  • Mirri Maz,

I always pictured the Dornish as being an Arab/Indian/Spanish looking type people.

I think it’s to soon for The Red Viper, unless D&D are going to chane things up, as far as time lines, go. Which is fine by me.

  • Tom BDil:
Northern Irish actor Andrew Simpson (Notes on a Scandal) auditioning for role of Ramsay Snow.

Uh oh. Now I’m worried. That’s not at all how I pictured Ramsay. I’ve always assumed he would be scarier looking than I am, at the very least (which is actually a compliment to the actor in question).

And, I certainly didn’t picture him as a kid. In my mind, he’s much more physically imposing than Theon or Jon Snow, rather than “one” of them. Keep in mind, he’s partly of peasant stock, so I always pictured him to be a bit more rugged than a fancy lad lordling. But, then again, I didn’t write the book, so if GRRM’s cool with it, so am I. Ramsay is his character, not mine.

  • Duff Man:
Are they going to recast the role of Beric Dondarion or do they plan on bringing back the guy from season 1?

He made me laugh in S1. He just seemed so SUPER-SERIOUS about the assignment. I wouldn’t be terribly upset over a recast since he didn’t have much to sell himself with in S1.

I hope they bring the Greatjon back for more kicks and giggles. He was one of my favorite pop-ins from S1. I want to see all the Northern lords in one place being badass together. Their outfits are so dope.

It’s less likely due to sheer courtesy to the S2 actor, but I hope Conan Stevens is brought back as the Mountain for the sheer physical presence he brought to the role. The new guy is just as tall but with a less robust frame. You can see how his S2 armor was designed to make him look larger than he is. I’m sure he’d look just as badass in full armor, helm and all, though.

  • Jason Momoa for Daario (it would explain Dany’s total pre-occupation with him that leads to bad decisions) although make-up can be used to differentiate the two characters. Like Daario is a sexy/evil twin to Drogo.

  • Varamyr Fourskins,

They mucked up Gemma Whelan to perfection to create Yara, who doesn’t have Asha’s written sex appeal but made for a great character anyway. Some actors are as awesome as you’d expect from their headshots online, but other choices have defied expectations in my book. It’s about their ability to step into the role as much as their overall appearance, right? :]

  • About Ramsay.
    Actor is 23 now.
How could Show Ramsey be possibly older?
    With Show Roose being 45ish.
I think if he’s the same age as theon it’s perfect.
Theon being slightly older than Robb n Jon

  • Arthur,

Whoooa there, full frontal in Spartacus? Spoiler alert! :o

I used to confuse him with Michael Fassbender’s character in 300 all the time. He’d eat up too much budget, but having Fassbender involved would also be fantastic.

  • Can we please stop with the Mr.Momoa for Daario talk ? How do you disguise that monster ?… it will just confuse people …and are we gonna see one of my favourite bad guys ? Vargo Hoat and his bloody mummers ? …I sure hope so !!!!

  • Johnny Depp as RV, it is a small juicy role (last what maybe 5 episodes) and he does look the part as a Spaniard with proper make-up. It would be a massive plus for increasing viewers, one of the few small roles where money could be spent on an actor that might radically increase those numbers. Plus JD has the talent, ego and attitude to pull it off.

  • Jenny,

Hehe… Well whatever I ain’t a girl sooo I guess your opinion is more valid. But I love Spartacus, though it isn’t even in the same league as GoTs, and Dustin Clare is the most cocky, good looking warrior on the show.

His cocky attitude and good looks would be perfect for Daario… =]

  • WompWomp,

Yeah I know but IMHO, Dustin Clare would be my dream casting for Daario. That’s all I am trying to say. He is sooo badass in Spartacus!

  • Coltaine777,

You don’t disguise him, just make-up to become the alternate universe version of Drogo, and yea and it would confuse Dany and make her (and explain why) do the stupid things she does.

  • Mirri Maz: ode 9 (red wedding) and then the aftermath in episode 10 which could be Tyrion’s wedding to Sansa and some fallout.

I just got to the Tyrion-Sansa wedding in my re-read of ASOS. However, that is well before either the Red or Purple Weddings.

I like the idea above of having the Red Wedding to open Season 4, as somebody mentioned above. Not sure it will happen, but I like the idea. My guess, however, is that it will end Season 3. They’ll pair that with Dany conquering Astapor or Yunkai so it won’t be a total downer.

  • Jenny,

Yeah but Dustin isn’t muscle bound… I know what you are saying. We just got to remember that before all else, Daario is a sellsword warrior. He didn’t get to his position because he is a prettyboy. Know what I am saying…

So first off, he is a badass warrior. Second off, he is a good looking cocky dude with a lot of swagger.

I think Dustin Clare pulls both those characteristics off wonderfully. But like Womp pointed out he is probably to expensive to cast.

Oh well, a man can dream that Dustin gets the part. I miss Drogo and Daario, if casted right, can bring some of that badass back to the screen…

  • Well I think Daario has the same body type as the Viper or Jaime.
And don’t tell me they’re not badass warriors.
Also has to do with a characters function.
Teenage girls swoon for Justin Bieber. Who is so efeminate it hurts the eye.

  • I love the look of Andrew Simpson for Ramsay. Looks like he could do psychopath quite convincingly.

  • Jenny,

Jaime is definitely badass. It sucks they haven’t shown the TV viewer just how badass he is… Wish they would of (my whole lack of action complaint).

I just hope out of the characters left that are warriors, that will soon be casted.

    1). Strong Belwas
    2). Red Viper
    3). Daario

We get someone with that more “barbaric” type warrior persona, like Drogo had.

  • Winter Is Coming,

It’s worth bearing in mind that Book Ramsay is (ostensibly) only in his early-to-mid twenties. He’s described as a “young man” in one of Bran’s CoK chapters, though probably a few years older than Theon.

  • tysnow you aren’t allowed to post here anymore.

momoa as daario? how high are you? you must live under power lines. do you insufflate model airplane glue? the guy was ALREADY IN THE GODDAMN SHOW. you can’t bring back the same actor to play a different role. I can’t believe this needs to be explained.

johnny depp? holy christ above, you’re insane. you are actually nuts. we’re all dumber for simply reading your posts.

  • Taghmaoui and Rahim, who I’ve only seen in A Prophet, are both great actors, and it would be cool to see them find roles on this show. Taghmaoui in particular deserves a better English-speaking career than a bit part on Lost, the Conan remake and GI Joe.

Thinking of the Mummers and the Brotherhood, I’d like to see the series trend towards more and more odd-looking people, if that makes any sense. I want my medievalists dirt-covered, missing ears and eyes and limbs, but main characters and not background. Basically everyone should look and act like Dr. Evazan in the Star Wars cantina.

  • Arthur,

Dustin Clare is badass in Spartacus but he’s still on that show so Game of Thrones wouldn’t be a possibility. I think the guy who plays Ashur, Nick E. Tarabay, who died in the Season 2 finale would do well as Daario, Grey Worm or The Red Viper.

  • Tytos Lannister,

Dustin Clare is badass in Spartacus but he’s still on that show so Game of Thrones wouldn’t be a possibility. I think the guy who plays Ashur, Nick E. Tarabay, who died in the Season 2 finale would do well as Daario, Grey Worm or The Red Viper.

Yeah that is true. Ashur was a character we all loved to hate. Kind of like Jeff/Theon in GoTs. Dustin is probably just wishful thinking on my behalf.

I think Nick E Tarabay would be a good pickup as any warrior character.

  • tysnow:

Plus JD has the talent, ego and attitude to pull it off.

If we’re playing the impossible casting game, give me real life couple Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci as Oberyn and Ellaria. Can you think of anyone that would be more fun to watch joke together about getting Cersei in their bed?

  • cmdrsven,

Tell him his character is an obnoxious, backstabbing base-breaker who’s probably the single most hated character in the book’s fandom.

On the other hand, he gets to sleep with Dany. A lot.

    Probably worth it.

  • tysnow:
Jason Momoa for Daario (it would explain Dany’s total pre-occupation with him that leads to bad decisions) although make-up can be used to differentiate the two characters. Like Daario is a sexy/evil twin to Drogo.

Jason Momoa was a perfect Khal Drogo, but I’m sorry, no no NO recycling of actors. That would be the epitome of lame.

  • I don’t believe I’ve seen Anvar in anything, but nothing about his look makes him unacceptable for Daario. Except that I wouldn’t kick him out of bed- which I unfortunately cannot say for book Daario. :) I wish him luck!

  • Queensmoot,

Not to hate on Cas but there’s nothing about him that would lead me to believe Dany would fall head over heels for him.

I never seen any of his work so maybe pictures alone wouldn’t do him justice but from just the pictures, not impressed.

  • Arthur,

I guess women who loved Fabio might think Dustin Clare is hot, but he looks more like Evan Stone or the greasy sax man from Lost Boys than any legitimate object of lust to me. Y-U-C-K. OK, I just looked at a few more pictures and maybe he’s not that bad (add some hints of Orlando Bloom, which makes him more handsome but also kind of boring looking), but the idea of Dany fantasizing about him makes me throw up a little in my mouth. Now, I’m an at-least-mostly-straight male, so maybe I’m missing something, but I think you’re barking up the wrong tree. I’m sure he’s awesome on Spartacus, but let him be some badass who doesn’t also have to be so mind-bogglingly hot that he causes Dany to lose all reason.

  • I’d go with Daario, because the adaptation of A Storm of Swords will be divided into two seasons and Oberyn doesn’t show up in KL until after Wedding

  • darrylzero,

That’s so funny because I just thought/posted the same thing about that Cas guy.

Different strokes for different folks… =]

  • All I know is whoever they cast for Daario had better ooze sexuality and confidence, and ooze it well. I think it’s less about physical attributes and more about how he carries himself. But he’d still better be hot. If he makes Dany ***** her pants, then I’d better at least salivate a little.

  • Ren Snow,

The Red Viper shows up in the 39th chapter of ASOS. That is just about half way through that book. I would think his character would be saved for season 4.

  • Hope they’ll be casting the Queen of Thorns soon. I’ve got a great-grandmother perfect for the role, impossibly innocent-looking but witty and cynical in person. Does she need to speak English?

  • Oberyn is definitely going to be in season 3,he shows up before the red wedding. They’ll also probably want the audience to get to know his character so they might actually introduce him a little earlier and expand his interactions like they did with Ygritte this season. Plus it will allow for exposition on Dorne and the Martells.

Also, if you’re not going to end the season with the 2 weddings, what climactic event are you going to use to cap the season for those involved in that part of the story? It just seems like a logical end point for a season. I think we’ll see the red wedding in ep 9 and Joffrey will be killed in ep 10 to soften the blow.

  • @casanvar just confirmed on Twitter he IS auditioning for Daario.
He asks for Fans to give him clues for the roles.

    I showed him thishttp://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fx7gC7hxq7U/TjQBR15PN-I/AAAAAAAAAOY/sBdUrV4xkoM/s1600/daario.jpg

  • Off Topic…

Just watched ‘The Grey’. For any of you that like the Direwolves in GoTs you should checkout this movie. Really awesome movie! Xero Ducksauce is in it as well…

  • I don’t have any casting suggestions, but I can’t be the only one who’s totally psyched for the cast news to start rolling in. Last summer/fall it was fun as hell.

I really ought to do a reread because other than the Red Viper, Thorny Queen, Mance Rayder and possibly a/the Reeds, I seriously can’t think of too many new major characters being introduced. (Hopefully someone can enlighten me here.)

    Either way, I’m stoked.

  • While I agree with those who think it would be a mistake to put RW in Episode 9 of Season 3 because of the predictable big stuff there, I imagine that there will be as much advance buzz about it as there has been for the Battle of Blackwater, and perhaps more.

What is important, I think, is that the Brotherhood finding Cat in the river and Beric’s choice after that (which ought to be foreshadowed) happens in the same season as the RW. It probably should be in the same episode, but then there is a lot to be said for rolling the credits immediately after seeing Dacey, Robb, and then Cat all go down, and the following episode starting with Sandor and Arya outside the castle.

The Red Viper could be introduced late in Season 3, but I would wait for 4. There is no way that the PW ought to be a part of Season 3; Tyrion would spend almost the whole season in the dungeon. We had too much of Ned there in Season 1.

For 3-10, we could have Jon get away from Ygritte and the other wildlings, and Dany taking Yunkai. We know that they’re going to do Yunkai in Season 3, which leads me to suspect more involved between the fall of Yunkai and that of Meereen than we had in Dany’s story in SOS.

  • Why is S3 too soon for the Martells? The Red Viper doesn’t take that much too show up, plus S3 will probably end with Joffrey’s death and he has to be there for it. Plus, if the bring him in S4 only, it will be obvious to non-readers that he will lose the fight to Gregor

Also, there’s no chance in hell they will end S3 with Joffrey alive if they do the Red Wedding It would like end S01 with Ned beheaded, but no dragons, no King in the North, no Tyrion becoming hand, etc.

  • SerCountryFriedSteak,

I also definitely agree with your assessment. s3 – Episode 9 – should be the red wedding.
ep 10 – would then be joffreys wedding and assassination, sansas escape
+ the siege of castle black and ygrittes death.
The season should end on the cliffhanger of tyrion’s arrest.

S4 would then have Tyrion’s judge trial and trial by combat – mountain vs viper. episode 4 or 5 would be the siege of the wall. leaving ep 6,7,8 for his arrest, parley and stannis’s attack. And then end on him being made commander.
s4 may have some of feast and dance in it such as balons murder by euron (i think they will show this as it is hinted at in books, just like renly and loras ;P) and the kingsmoot, plus some dorne story, quentyn and brienne.
s4 finale will have tyrion murdering his father and shit going down in the eyrie.

This leaves season 5 for rest of feast and dance, ending on battle of meereen (we all know its coming in early winds) leaving 2 or 3 more seasons for winds and dream. Whew, there you go Dan and Dave, planned! lol

  • AAAAAAAGHHHHH NOT AGAIN! Please help WIC. Cover it away from innocent eyes!

  • The Sweetling:
    Carne,

Season 3 has 15% larger budget than season 2 did.

HBO had originally allocated the same budget to season 2 as D&D had had for season 1. They later successfully begged for an extra 15% so they could do the Battle of Blackwater justice. However, they sold that as a special case.

Do you have an authoritative reference for the size of the season 3 budget?

  • I’m sorry, Cas Anvar as Daario Naharis? How in the world? Seriously, what the flying f*ck…

Cas Anvar is unnattractive, not to mention ‘old’ and has about as much sex-appeal as a dirty sock. Can you imagine a young woman (Dany) fantasizing about THAT!? I mean, look at him! Imagining him fondling the breasts of the women that are the hilts of his swords is just …weird.

THIS is what a Daario Naharis should look like, not some old fart.

  • Jenny,

I know nothing about if this guy can act, but I like this Mediterranean look for Daario. Italian/Spanish/Croatian/Greek/Turkish…some type of really slick, smooth Mediterranean guy is how I always imagined Daario.

But I’m glad that they’re auditioning people of various races and just finding the actor that best captures the character. Whoever they choose, I just hope they tone down his styling like they did with Jaqen. Blue hair, maybe, to express his flamboyancy, but in a not-ridiculous way!

Do the books ever even say how old Daario is supposed to be? I imagined late 20s/early 30s…

  • Winterfell Burning:

I agree with you from a story standpoint — it would feel more natural and not rushed. Plus, who wouldn’t love some small council meetings with Oberyn on them!

That said, money talks. If an actor expense can be delayed until season 4, it will be. I could see them forcing it – but I could also see the Purple Wedding not being until Season 4, and that may lessen the timing issues as well.

    Either way, I’m stoked.

There’s a thread on Westeros, but a quick shot:

Jon’s arc has not only Mance, but Tormund, Val, Val’s man, Styr, Dalla, Donal Noye and any other Night’s Watch they feel they need to add for the attack south of the Wall.

I expect a lot of Sam’s will be cut, but there’s Small Paul/Chett’s crew and Coldhands (although perhaps it’s Mawle!).

Bran may or may not get the Reeds.

KL get’s the Kettlebacks, the Red Viper, and perhaps some Tyrells.

Sounds like Stannis may get Shireen and perhaps some Queen’s men (and maybe a new Selyse!).

Robb & Cat seem to be getting a lot of the Riverrun crew.

Arya, Jaime and Brienne get the Bloody Mummers and the Brotherhood without Banners (Beric and Thoros).

Dany gets everyone in Astapor, apparently Daario, Strong Belwas and possible some of the Yunkai plotline?

  • Tom Hedwyn Savage,

My S3 & S4 breakdown is still being worked on:

    The GENERAL PROBLEMS:
Stannis, Davos & Mel – not involved in much action until end when they save the wall which I have as near end of Season 4. So for season 3, I have them going after Edric Storm… the debate.

Cat & Arya after the Red Wedding- Since the Red Wedding is going in S3, Cat’s re-appearance must happen either at end of S3 ep10 or hold off until Season 4. Arya is also aimless for much after Red Wedding.

Theon & Reek — you’re going to need Alfie for later books (S5) but you’ve got to use him now… so I had to ‘re-create’ the Reek misdirection.

Anyway, with that said, I base my breakdowns on the cliffhangers so SEASON 3:

Ep 1 cliffhanger: White Walker Attack on Fist, but if that slips into S2… I go with Arya caught by Brotherhood

Ep 2 cliffhanger: Sam kills White Walker

Ep 3 cliffhanger: Theon kills “Ramsey”, takes Reek as hostage/toady

Ep 4 cliffhanger: Mormont and Craster are killed

Ep 5 cliffhanger: Dany conquers Astapor

Ep 6 cliffhanger: Tyrion marries Sansa

Ep 7 cliffhanger: Jon escapes Wildings, runs toward Castle Black

Ep 8 cliffhanger: Jaime gives a hand. Reek’s identity revealed in bad news for Theon, Stannis gets Edric Storm

Ep 9 cliffhanger: Gilly gives birth; Red Wedding

Ep 10 cliffhanger: Purple Wedding, Sansa escapes, Jon defends Wall bye Ygritte, Dany takes Yunkai

    Which leads into SEASON 4:

Ep 1 cliffhanger: Tyrion learns he’s going to be put on trial with death sentence

Ep 2 cliffhanger: Sam & Gilly saved by Coldhands

Ep 3 cliffhanger: Littlefinger marries Lysa

Ep 4 cliffhanger: Mance & company attack the Wall

Ep 5 cliffhanger: Dany conquers Meereen.

Ep 6 cliffhanger: Arya & Hound kill jerks.

Ep 7 cliffhanger: Arya leaves The Hound to die

Ep 8 cliffhanger: Red Viper loses to the Mountain.

Ep 9 cliffhanger: Dany banishes Jorah, Littlefinger kills Lysa, Stannis saves the Wall. Tyrion’s escape.

Ep 10 cliffhanger: Jon named Commander. Dany decides to stay in Meereen

NOTE: This is a work in progress, should be ready in two weeks.

  • Troy,

He’s not old, and speaking as a woman, he’s very attractive. (And the guy you linked is unfortunately a musician, not an actor.)

And I agree with what was said about Dustin Clare. I don’t find him attractive at all, even though he is supposedly good-looking. Just too romance-novel-cover boring and sort of creepy.

Okay cool, to each their own and all that. Why is he creepy though?

Maybe a video of him would be better. I agree, everyone has their own tastes of what “sexy and beautiful” is. But why creepy?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTYirftJFlQ

Dustin seems like a nice guy to me…

I know it is a long shot for him to be casted. This is just what MY personal opinion is of a Daario. But I know yours may be totally different and I am cool with that, but creepy? That is a little harsh.

This one is a little better, you can see his cocky/badassness… =)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh_5HNda65E&feature=related

  • Andrew Simpson has the biggest eyebrows I have ever seen Kind of looks small for Ramsey though.

  • Ours is the Fury, I saw on the other thread you downloaded the Mero audition video before it got taken down. Was there any indication where the scene was set — Astapor, Yunkai, Meereen? Was slavery mentioned? Any other interesting details? Really curious how they’re gonna adapt Dany’s story for S3. Thanks!

  • Forgive me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there a chance that Daario’s looks are important to the story in terms of ethnicity? And if that’s true, doesn’t he have to look like a Targaryen once he stops dying his hair?

I’m not sure if I buy the theory, and I’m sure you could talk your way out of it (“my mother was Dothraki!”) but just saying it might be relevant and could make some casting choices unlikely.

  • SerCountryFriedSteak,

Weiss and Benioff seemed pretty adamant that the books were going to bleed into each other from here on out. I really don’t think season 4 is going to be ASOS the whole way, the 4th and 5th books are going to have some content in there as well

  • Alan, the casting call for Daario asked for any race except white. Why would Daario’s race be important to the story? Are you trying to say he’s a secret Targ? Is this actually a thing?

  • OtherAndrew:
Alan, the casting call for Daario asked for any race except white. Why would Daario’s race be important to the story? Are you trying to say he’s a secret Targ? Is this actually a thing?

It’s a theory. Not mine, and I’ve never put thought into it, but it is a theory because his eyes are somewhat like a Targ’s, and he dyes his hair — to hide something, perhaps? Regardless, perhaps that theory is wrong as the casting call seems to be going the other way.

  • To the people who are saying the Red Viper is just a small role… well, yeah, on the page. But the actor will require significant combat training, I think, to pull off that scene with any resemblance of the book scene. So either we wait until season 4, see an expanded role, or they hire someone they can easily lock down for two seasons, though it isn’t that much work.

Sounds like a logistical nightmare to me! Glad it’s not my job.

    p.s.

    GIVE ME MY STRONG BELWAS.

  • Arthur,

Have to concur with Ours is the Fury, vaguely creepy fellow.
Incidentally, you a white Aussie, Arthur?

  • darrylzero:
Any thoughts on what role might be good for Tahar Rahim? His performance in A Prophet was pretty unbelievable and I’d love to see him get some meaty role.

He’s too young and maybe not quite handsome enough for Oberyn, and I think he’d be wasted on Quentyn (though he’d do the awkwardness of that character well).I see him as quieter and less flamboyant but deeply compelling, a little stoic and a little awkward but also menacing and at the same time relatable.Maybe if Darkstar is fleshed out a little more on the show, but that’s pretty unlikely (and probably not a good thing).

I think he is locked onto a new film with Marion Cotillard, directed by Asghar Farhadi [A Separation]. So he might not be free for GoT.

  • Tom BDil,

You’ve got to freaking kidding me. They are going to cast Ramsay as attractive so he can have plenty of gross stans. Ugh.

  • You know despite the Red Wedding and what a downer that will be for many of the Unsullied, those who are complaining about the lack of action this season I think will be rewarded this weekend with the Blackwater and everything else that follows. Because from episode 9 and onward it is a roller coaster ride all the way till we get off the tracks @ AFFC /ADWD.

As problematic as some of the writing and adaptation for this season has been for both Book Readers and the Newbies, there is great promise to season 3.

I like the idea of Said for The Red Viper. I personally see him as Grey Worm though. He would be awesome as Grey Worm or even the Tattered Prince.

Andrew Simpson is a good choice for the Bastard of the Dreadfort, we will have to see. Kind of hoping for Andrew Scott though.

    My other casting picks:

Red Viper: Alexander Siddig. He would work regardless what colour skin D&D give the Dornish.

Mance Rayder: David Thewliss, all the way.Audiences will recognize him instantly. He has gravitas and charisma, and I can see him with a flute. He would rock this role. Plus Tonks and Lupin as Wildings is too good to pass up.
    Alternative? Rufus Sewell…..

Victarion Greyjoy: Mads Mikkelsen or Ray Stevenson

Euron Greyjoy: Rufus Sewell or Michael Wincott

Val: Imogen Poots. After seeing her in Centurion, I can think of no one else right now. Plus there’s the Neil Marshall/Liam Cunningham connection.

Tormund Giantsbane: A less grave Vladimir Kulich would be perfect.
    Coldhands: Joseph Mawle?

Vargo Hoat: Vincent Cassell would KILL this role. Hilarious and vicious at the same time.

Mace Tyrell: The Lord of Highgarden. Tom Wilkinson would be great for this role. He’s an HBO veteran too. In John Adams he played Benjamin Franklin to Stephen Dillane’s Thomas Jefferson.

Olenna Tyrell the QoT: Several choices for me. I would love if Vanessa Redgrave took this role, but I don’t see that happening. But she would be awesome. Plus wouldn’t it be great to have one of the original Anne Boleyns as Natalie Dormer’s mentor?
Siann Phillips: This is a no brainer. After all she is a goddess, the Queen of Heaven!
Francesca Annis : Lady Macbeth and the Lady Jessica FTW.
Fionnula Flannagan: The Irish actor, her performance as Rose Caffee in Brotherhood is proof enough she would be great in this role.
Maggie Smith: Love Maggie Smith and she seems to the favoured choice but I would like to see someone else in the role. I wouldn’t complain if she was cast though. It would be great buzz.
Eileen Atkins: Great character actor. A realistic option.

    Garlan Tyrell: Padraic Delaney

Randyll Tarly: Who better then Brian Cox? Another HBO veteran.

Edmure Tully: Stephen Waddington or Rupert Graves

Brynden Tully “The Blackfish” : Peter Mullan

Beric Dondarrion: Either Tony Curran, David Wenham or Sean Harris.

    Lem Lemoncloak: Jason Flemyng

Black Walder: Danny Huston. Great actor. Seems pleasant but hides a lot of menace. I want him for this role!

    Raymund Frey: Jamie Foreman

    Lame Lothar: James Frain

    Ellaria Sand: Leonor Varela

    Wyman Manderley: Ian McNiece

and if Dorne is introduced earlier….

Prince Doran Martell: Ciaran Hinds or Gianncarlo Giannini. They just scream Prince Doran to me.

    and if CAST

Meera Reed : Sarah Bolger ( I’d say we will only get 1 Reed)

That’s all I can think of now.

Random fact: Looking up the cast of Elizabeth noticed that both Lily Allen and her brother Alfie had bit parts!

  • On Cas Anvar: good to see they are branching out beyond UK-based actors. I don’t want to see star names in GoT but a few actors who I’m not familiar with would be nice – as a UK-based viewer I spend half of the time ticking off where I have seen the actors before, especially the unkempt old men.

  • Joshua Taylor:

(a bunch of really well known actors)

So, uh, dream casting, right? ;)

We’ve gotten some people who were bigger names than I would have expected.

I do wonder how many of the Tyrells we’ll get. Mace, of course. I would love to see the QoT, but it doesn’t look like they’ll need her with a more obviously savvy Margaery. A shame, as she’s a delightful character. And with Mace being a bit of a blowhard, it’d be nice to see where Margaery got her savvy….

  • There are a few battles and major events in ASOS
    that could be quite costly

Battle of the Fist of the First Men, Battle at Castle Black, Attack on the slavers in Astapor, The Siege of Meereen and two special weddings, though half of those won’t appear until seaon 4, but still.

As far as the actor mentioned auditioning, he looks like a Grey Worm to me

  • HouseLark:

    That Onion piece is hilarious!

I do that, too, though, even outside of the UK, all “who is that person, I KNOW I’VE SEEN THEM BEFORE.”

  • I just want the Goat confirmed…and Shagwell and Septon Utt and Urswyck…well for some weird reason I love the Brave Companions. Can’t wait to see the Goat of Qohor banner and the mutilating of Jaime

  • Langkard,

He does look like a good Strong Belwas. I guess it comes down to availability and if he can do an accent. I liked him in Sarah Marshall.

  • Langkard:
I’m jumping on the Taylor Wily (Teila Tuli) for Strong Belwas bandwagon. It’s a long shot, especially if he isn’t eligible for work in the EU (only 2 American actors in the series to date); but just look at his expression in this pic:

    http://www.50undercover.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/pul-taylor-wily-58_.jpg

    That IS Strong Belwas!

Yes, that certainly is Belwas. I’ve mentioned him a few times on here and a few other forums.

Is it a big process for somebody to obtain EU work eligibility? Will they film Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen in the EU, or would they move to somewhere like Morocco or another desert-like location?

  • NewJeffCT: Yes, that certainly is Belwas.I’ve mentioned him a few times on here and a few other forums.

Is it a big process for somebody to obtain EU work eligibility? Will they film Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen in the EU, or would they move to somewhere like Morocco or another desert-like location?

I’m not exactly sure why only 2 Americans have been in the production, but I suspect it might have something to do with union contracts. I recall that back during casting for the pilot, one of the requirements was that actors have their Equity cards or were eligible to get their Equity cards. Equity is the UK’s actor’s union. It hasn’t been a closed shop for years now, but the UK union has mutual agreements with the equivalent USA actor’s unions (stage would be Actor’s Equity and screen would be SAG-AFTRA). They are all members of the International Federation of Actors, the FIA. I have no idea what the rules are; but they must play a part.

As for where they will be filming the scenes for land areas around the cities of Slaver’s Bay, that’s a good question. The first season used Malta and Northern Ireland. The second season has the Red Waste before Dany gets to Qarth, which I think has exterior shots from Sandy Brae in the Mourne Mountains of N. Ireland, also the isle of Lokrum was used for Qarth. Dubrovnik is so perfect for filming this series that I expect it will continue to be used. If Sandy Brae can be digitally matte-enhanced to look like the Red WAste, then it will do for the road to Astapor, Yunkai and Mereen, which is where we’d have need for Strong Belwas (as long as they cast him! Oh please, cast that character if for no other reason than to have him turn his back on the city and crap in their general direction and then in a later season eat an entire bowl of poisoned honeyed locusts and say, “Strong Belwas ate too many locusts. Strong Belwas needs milk.”)

  • On that note…

Anyone know how one would go about contacting Taylor Wily’s agent to suggest he pursue the role? We don’t really even know if the role is being cast, do we? I’m pretty sure his agent would be the Agency for the Performing Arts L.A. but that’s about it. What would we say?

“Hey, agent guy, there is a possibility of a great role for Taylor Wily, but we don’t know if the role even exists or if he’d be eligible or if he’d want the part or if the part would conflict with filming of H50 or if…”

“What? No, I’m not on drugs. I’m serious!”

  • I’m sure we won’t see Oberyn at S3. Even if the books have him appear before the RW, he doesn’t get involved with the story until afterwards. Besides, since it wasn’t mentioned in S2 thet besides sending Myrcella to dorne they were offering a seat of the Small Council to Dorne, his appearance would come out from nowhere.

It’s much more easier to make him appear at the beginning of S4 and justify his presence as being a guest for Joffrey’s wedding. This way the production avoids having to cast an actor just for a single scene at the end of one season.

  • I just hope we get at least one high profile actor, somone along the lines of James Purefoy.

  • Jaqen Haagen’Dazs: ’t see Oberyn at S3. Even if the books have him appear before the RW, he doesn’t get involved with the story until afterwards. Jaqen Haagen’Dazs:
The Rock as The Red Viper. Clearly.

The Rock is too big to be The Red Viper, I’d think. Isn’t he like 6’6″ or something? He might have made a good Drogo or Daario if he were younger, though.

  • The Red Viper = Oded Fehr
Edmure Tully = David Wenham or Kevin McKidd
    Euron Greyjoy = James Purefoy
    Victarion Greyjoy = Ray Stevenson
Arianne Martell = Freida Pinto…..hey I can dream
King Beyond The Wall = Henry Ian Cusick

I really hope Nina considers Oded for Oberyn because I believe he’s perfect for the role.

  • Michel,

I deserve no credit it was this very site that made the suggestion, I agree with the idea though. Henry has the look and isn’t too costly.

  • For what it’s worth i think Eric Bana would make an awsome red viper ,and i haven’t heard him doing anything quite so big right now,so it could be a Sean Bean-like case, given the fact that budget would be increased same as this season and there will be no hudge scenes as blackwater battle. He might not be exactly an arabic type but he could pass as meditteranean or even there could some make up work..As for the kid playing the bastard of Bolton,it’s not that he’s too young but
too good looking to play Ramsay..

  • I’m not very good at having ideas for casting, but one I can’t seem to shake is David Wenham for Edmure Tully. He just screams Edmure to me, and even looks like he could be related to Michelle Fairley.

Ok wtf why does my comment say it won’t post?

  • Hi, longtime reader (and fan) of this site, first time poster.

At this point what compels me to finally make my first post instead of just sitting back and enjoying all your great comments and thoughts, is that I feel that I need to add another voice to the internet saying that Naveen Andrews IS the Red Viper.

    It is known.

  • I think Canadian actor Colm Feore should be cast as someone. He’s a versatile character actor, and is classically trained!

  • I agree completely Naveen Andrews would be perfect for the red viper !!!! and Andrew Simpson looks like a good Ramsey :)

  • socrates k,

For what it’s worth i think Eric Bana would make an awsome red viper

I loved him as Hector in Troy (A great man surrounded by idiots :) ) and I could almost agree if I were not so in love with the idea of Alexander Siddig in the part.

  • Eric Bana would be awesome in any role and a great pickup for GoTs…

Speaking of ‘Troy’, wasn’t one of the D&D producer/writers a big part of Troy?

I wonder if Blackwater will be anything like when Achilles landed on Troys beach…

  • I read somewhere that they casted Ciaran Hinds for the role of Doran Martell, but it might be a rumor. Nevertheless, he is a great actor.

  • anyone think jonathan pryce would be great for this show? im thinking qyburn. and ciaran hinds needs to be doran martell

  • ooh I just thought of someone I think would be a good contender for the Red Viper.

The guy who played Ari Haswari in NCIS S1-3 (and killed Kate in S1). He is German (no idea of his ethnicity) but Ari was supposed to be Isreali/Palestinian.

    his name is rudolf martin.

    pictures can be seen here

he has that knowing smile down pat and I can so see him deliver those epic lines to The Mountain!

  • If only Christoph Waltz were younger. He would make an awesome Ramsay Snow.

Loved him as Col. Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds

A little skinny, but tall enough and has the right look methinks! Eat a few cheeseburgers and he might do…

  • Ye Olde Wolfe:
I’m not very good at having ideas for casting, but one I can’t seem to shake is David Wenham for Edmure Tully. He just screams Edmure to me, and even looks like he could be related to Michelle Fairley.
Ok wtf why does my comment say it won’t post?

YES! LOVE this idea! David Wenham for Edmure Tully!

Bana could be Griff, Lord Connington? He’d be awesome!

  • Dogmayor:
Oberyn is definitely going to be in season 3,he shows up before the red wedding.

It just occurred to me that it would be totally awesome if the RW and the PW are in the same episode, with edits back and forth…would be such mixed feelings but would be an incredible episode.

  • Danielle:
    cmdrsven,

Ok, he looks a bit older than I thought Daario would be but I kind of love the idea of Altair from assasins creed playing this part! :)I always thought of Dev Patelhttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm2353862/ or Reece Ritchiehttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm2201022/ from Prince of Persia (shut up, I liked that movie!) but I guess I was going with the age range of book Dani & what she would be attracted to not show Dani.

Dev Patel is in the new HBO show “The Newsroom” and is maybe a touch nerdy, no? Ritchie has the right look, right age for Dany too as a contrast to the older guy she’s compelled to marry.

  • If you check out PBS series, you pretty much see every affordable working character actor in Great Britain cycle through Downton Abbey, Masterpiece: Mystery, Masterpiece Classic, etc. These could include the great Eileen Atkins (already mentioned) John Hannah, Hugh Bonneville, Jeremy Northam, Jonny Lee Miller, the great Michael Gambon, Sally Hawkins, Nathaniel Parker, etc. I suspect some of these kinds of folks will show up in the next couple of seasons.

We might possibly see even Dame Judi Dench, who is a workhorse and would take on a role that kept her at the Paint Hall….but I suspect not Maggie Smith, who’s trying to cut back on her commitments (and thus has bowed out of the very popular Downton Abbey after one more season).

  • Mrs. H’ghar: Bana could be Griff, Lord Connington? He’d be awesome!

Although not an A-lister, I think Eric Bana still has too much Hollywood mojo to take on a role in GOT, even a cameo, especially since he’s about to play Elvis Presley. Tom Sturridge or Nicholas Hoult might be good options for some of the younger roles (and both have highly connected Hollywood girlfriends, to boot).

  • Alan: It’s a theory. Not mine, and I’ve never put thought into it, but it is a theory because his eyes are somewhat like a Targ’s, and he dyes his hair — to hide something, perhaps? Regardless, perhaps that theory is wrong as the casting call seems to be going the other way.

Oh cool. That’s my theory. Well under my theory he would need to be a mixture of Targaryan and Dornish. Since we don’t know what look they are planning to use for the Dornish group that leaves several options open and fits with why they are avoiding Caucasian actors for the role. However, he could be a Blackfyre and GRRM could be hiding his looks for other reasons.

  • I know this is almost certainly not going to happen, but I can only picture the Queen of Thorns as being played by Maggie Smith.

  • I took one look at Mark Dacascos and said “That’s the Viper”. I don’t know exactly what is, but something about him just screams Red Viper to me.

  • Mrs. H’ghar,

Dev can be a bit nerdy but, please don’t crucify me, he was actually pretty good as Zuko in The Last Airbender (I am a huge Avatar fan and yes I know the movie in general sucked) and it’s a pretty intense role with fighting. But i know it’s not likely since he’s on that Jeff Daniels show. But I like the kid from Prince of Persia better.

  • So, now that House is over and done, are there any parts that Hugh Laurie would be good for?

  • Gina: So, now that House is over and done, are there any parts that Hugh Laurie would be good for?

Mance Rayder would be the most suitable.

  • Mrs. H’ghar: Hadn’t seen that photo of Mark Dacascos with the long hair and beard YEAAAAAH BAAABY!!!! Make it so! Could def see Dany wanting to tap THAT!

    A man could get jealous.

  • Mentioned on another thread, but if they can’t get/don’t want Taylor Wily for Strong Belwas somebody they should consider is Sammo Hung. He’s got loads of experience in both TV and films, is a MAJOR martial arts star so could really pull off the fighting scenes, plus has done many films with Jackie Chan which are mix comedy and drama so he could pull of the swagger AND the sarcasm of Strong Belwas. He’d be a coup, because he would also bring along 3 billion or so more fans to Game Of Thrones. Asian countries went nuts with joy when the NY Knicks player Jeremy Lin emerged as a start this year, and demanded that NY Knicks games be broadcast over there…so what would they do for Sammo Hung??? They’d go nuts, not to mention martial arts movie fans in English speaking countries would jump on the show if they haven’t already (face it…how many quality shows with sword fighting are there? And Full Metal Jousting doesn’t count.) I imagined him as being closer to Whitebeard’s age than Dany’s. He’s probably got international union approval too.
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005033/

D&D…please consider Sammo Hung for Strong Belwas and Mark Dacascos as either Daario or the Red Viper!

  • Another idea for the Red Viper, Donnie Yen, a Chinese/American actor and martial arts star, this clip came to mind. He’s 6′ tall so wouldn’t be out of place with the Mountain, and wields the long staff with ease as you can see in this clip. And this is a spear vs. sword fight too. Also easy on the eyes (don’t worry Jaqen).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTsKEgUJyUQ

‘Scuse me while I go watch this again!

  • Weirwood: David Wenham

Yeah, he’s been mentioned a couple of times, seems he would be great and lots of folks commented favorably to Wenham for Edmure. Good one!

  • Another idea for the Red Viper is Chow Yun Fat, a huuuuuge action film star who has done movies in English as well (Anna and the King, Bulletproof Monk, etc.) and was a People’s 50 Most Beautiful People in 2002 (could believe he has numerous bastard children), is over 6′ tall and no stranger to fight scenes of all types, plus romantic movies. Also, red is a lucky color for most Chinese culture, so probably wouldn’t mind the nickname. Here’s a photo from Anna and the King:

    http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2541721856/nm0000334

He would be awesome, and increasing the diversity of the cast would be great for the worldwide audience, plus adding a more exotic feel to Dorne. Mr. Chow brings a certain charisma and gravitas to the screen, and since it’s a role mostly in one season maybe it wouldn’t be a schedule buster? He started his fame on Hong Kong TV, so he has experience in tv too.

  • Yes! Vargo is in! If only the show could tweak the story so Jaime could kill the slobbering imbethile I would be happy.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap: Yes! Vargo is in! If only the show could tweak the story so Jaime could kill the slobbering imbethile I would be happy.

Lookth like the lithp might be exthcluded. But it’th an audition, not the thow yet.

  • Mrs. H’ghar: D&D…please consider Sammo Hung for Strong Belwas and Mark Dacascos as either Daario or the Red Viper!

An Asian as Belwas had never even crossed my mind, but he is an intriguing choice!

I just want Belwas in the show, period, though.

Considering some of the best Asian martial arts stars for parts that require fighting (mano-a-mano especially) would be a positive on several levels. Martial artists and action film stars work out relentlessly and are used to fight choreography, some even DO fight choreography as well for films they don’t star in (Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen) so they’d have really experienced people to block out the scenes and it would go faster and safer for everybody. No brainer. Dornish are supposed to have come from far away originally and would be very mixed in appearance (even the book says so), and the mercenary companies are very mixed in derivation. Just give them all a distinctive hair style and attire to tie them together culturally and it might work. They would be totally awesome additions to the already exemplary cast IMO. Those that are crying for more action would be extremely well satisfied by a few scenes that include real fighting artists. Fingers crossed. Just had a thought, Donnie Yen would be cool for Areo Hota if not for Daario or the Red Viper.

  • I can see him as Daario, though it’s too bad that he does not own the eyes like a much younger Ben Kingsley who can ‘rape a woman with his eyes’.

  • Some awesome suggestions above, especially from The Kingslayer. I did want to comment on the general ethnic preference here: If we assume that South Eastern Essos (Slaver’s Bay, Quarth) is kind of like Middle East we can’t have the Dornish look middle eastern also. I pictured Martells more Mediterranean.
So if you had Naveen Andrews as Red Viper you would have to cast the whole family (Sand Snakes) positively Middle Eastern. I think Naveen would work perfectly as leader of The Unsullied (though I pictured them looking like Vin Diesel, lol).
As for using Asian martial artists: it would make for some bad ass fight scenes but again I don’t see them casting entirety of Dorne as East Asian.
Unrelated: I don’t see Reeds happening, it’s too late for them and I bet Osha will essentially replace them instead of disappearing with Rickon.
And, yes, James Purefoy for any freaking role: Mance, Euron, Oberyn… Must have!

  • If Nina Gold, Benioff and Weiss cast Viva Bianca( Ilithyia from Spartacus) as Val, would be my dream come truth.

  • This is just wishful thinking on my part, but I really want to see Viggo Mortensen in this series. Thoughts?

  • A woman was just flipping around the web and came across another thought for Daario. Since they are apparently looking for non-Caucasians, why not Anthony Mackie?

    http://www.imdb.com/media/rm330344960/nm1107001

He is a hottie, and has done quite a few big films so is experienced. Nina, check him out, please?????? He is apparently in Abe Lincoln’s new vampire movie, so has the fighting thing down too. Raaaaaaawrrrrrrrr Daaaaaarioooooooo!

PS…Somebody mentioned Nick Tarabay, and a woman thinks he might work too.

  • surfgirlusa: This is just wishful thinking on my part, but I really want to see Viggo Mortensen in this series. Thoughts?

I suppose he could do a convincing Mance Rayder. He wouldn’t be at the top of my Mance wishlist, but he’d draw in a fair amount of viewers.

But ofcourse, he’s just too big a star.
