Interviews: Nikolaj on Jimmy Kimmel, Kit on Extra, and more

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night. Below is the video of his appearance, in two parts, along with a bunch of other recent interviews with Thrones cast and crew.

  • Goodness but Nikolai is lovely. And so sweet and funny too. I swear… half the reason I watch this show is for him alone.
Richard Madden is such a beautiful man. He is cheddargorge, and maddeningly (or maddenly) cuddly too. Too adorbs for words.

This woman is very grateful to D&D for the quality eye candy they have very kindly provided for my pleasure in this show.

  • I always love NCW’s interviews. Jimmy Kimmel does a good job interviewing him, too, he seems really comfortable there.

Kit Harrington always gives very thoughtful interviews as well. And man does he look good^^ Game of Thrones > Harry Potter. It all worked out for the best, IMO.

  • Love the interview with Peter Dinklage. The best one with him I have come across so far. Listen to it, don’t just read it. Love him to death.

  • Lena Heady is stunning in that Golden Globes interview. I don’t know how I’ve never noticed that before

  • Carlos Luna: Nikolaj has excellent English.

    his accent is excellent.

and JKimmel asking if he knows who Elvis Presley is. What kind of country does he think Denmark is?

  • Wow, NCW’s personality, speech, accent, mannerisms, and general likeness is NOTHING like Jaime’s. Last season I compared NCW to Harrison Ford. I was wrong. I shall revise my opinion. Jaime is comparable to Harrison Ford.* No one compares to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

    * By “comparable” I mean Jaime’s demeanor is like that of certain scoundrel / swashbuckler types Ford has played (i.e. the Han Solos; the Indiana Joneses). I don’t mean for an instant to intimate that Mr. Ford would toss a child out a window, stab a guy in the eye with a dagger, choke a guy with a chain, father children with his sister, insult tall women, or fail to appear (albeit through no fault of his own) in several consecutive episodes of an HBO series.

  • For 41, Nickolaj looks freakin fantastic. Hope I look half as good when I’m that age!

  • Long time lurker, first time poster so let me use this opportunity to welcome every fellow ASOIAF fan. I’ve recently completed the series of books which I actually picked upon hearing that HBO is going to adapt it.

I’m going through interviews with the cast for the first time and I am surprised that almost none of them save for Alfie Allen bothered to read the source material. From what you’ve gathered, is that the case with all the major cast members?

Its speaks bounds of Charles Dance’s ability as an actor that he was able to portray Tywin so well.

  • It’s kind of ironic that Rose Leslie is from an actual clan, with a sigil and motto, and on the show she plays a wildling.

  • Richard Madden…. *swoon*…….
Whenever I see interview with Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke they seem like such Besties….
    Lovely interviews….

  • Toadie,

I seemed to read an article or heard on an interview, can’t remember. I believe some of the cast members chose not to read the source material.

  • Toadie: e

More than just Theon has read the books, but from interviews, it seems most of them have read up to the point of the current season.

For a lot of them, they don’t like knowing where the character is going as they think they will subconsciously incorporate that into the acting rather than what the character was feeling in the moment.

I know most of the kids have their parents read it and tell them what happens in not so explicit terms.

    Me either, dude.

She’s not just any member of clan Leslie, she’s a member of the nobility. She grew up in Lickleyhead Castle, a 15th century castle in Aberdeenshire. Her father is the current owner of Lickleyhead Castle and probable 14th Leslie of Warthill. She has multiple earls, barons, counts, lords, French comtes, Spanish and Mexican dons and at least one baronin (female baron) of the Holy Roman Empire among her great grandfathers and grandmothers and earlier. As a Leslie, she’s descended from Princess Beatrix of Scotland, sister of King Malcolm III. Isn’t peerage genealogy fun? Follow the lineage back from any of her 4 grandparents in the peerage genealogies and you’ll find all kinds of interesting names popping up.

  • NCW seems such a likable man, and simply gorgeous. He’s quite funny too. Pretty much the entire cast has lovely accents, but it’s surprising his is so subtle (in my American opinion). Is Dinklage the only American cast member? He’s a priceless gem, as is the character he plays.

I don’t know what they did to her this season, but she’s more beautiful than ever as Cersei. Specific scenes that caught my eye:

    1) Cersei-Littlefinger crash course on power in “The North Remembers,” her eyes are greener and hair fairer than it ever was in S1.

    2) Cersei-Tyrion, Myrcella’s send-off to Dorne. We get a great look at her here, and she’s in fine form as the leading leonine lady.

She just didn’t work for me they way they made her up last season, so the difference, for me, is downright palpable.

  • It really is amazing how well NCW speaks English. Let’s just say, there’s no way I could ever move to Denmark and start speaking Danish on a comparable level. So, now I feel like an idiot.

  • Gay for Cersei:

Jason Momoa is also an American. They are the only 2 in the series (so far – I’m still cheering for Taylor Wily to play Strong Belwas).

  • I love NCW, and found it expecially adorable when he said “oh wow” at Lisa Marie Presley coming up next. To think that he came from a village of 40 people, predominantly retirees :^) to being inverviewed right before Elvis’s daighter… pretty cool stuff. Not to mention he’s on this show I kinda like.

  • Every time I see an interview with NCW I find myself smiling like an idiot. This man has hypnotic powers (the brownies are to blame I guess?)

  • New post up on GRRM’s Not-A-Blog says that Game of Thrones won the 2nd annual Stan Lee Award in the category Best TV Show at the Kapow! Comic Convention in London.

  • Mrs. H’ghar,

Yes,NCW does speak both languages. When he’s interviewed on SkyAtlantic he speaks as though he learned English from a middle-class english person and has a fair bit of Danish left in the accent. When he speaks to an American he has that American accent which sound right over the top to non-american ears. I assume the english accent is his default English and he makes an effort with the american one so he can be cast in american productions. Otherwise why bother with the first one?

  • Alex,

Do you speak speak mainly some other language than English?

I don’t and as I see it, you speak the English you hear, but have to make some effort to do it. Fe. in Denmark they don’t (at least that’s what I’ve understood) dub the movies and tv shows, so you grow up on American accent. In schools though they teach some kind of generic British (depends on the teacher of course), while the easiest way to talk english is to talk it like your own language, and some languages are more simular to English than others. Danish itself is pretty weird language, to me it sounds like Norweigian trying to speak in German and failing badly.

I think Coster-Waldau is pretty damn talented language wise.

  • WompWomp: I don’t know what they did to her this season, but she’s more beautiful than ever as Cersei. Specific scenes that caught my eye:

I think it’s probably I just prefer brunettes. Then again, I used to watch Terminator: SCC (a very underrated series) but I never thought Lena was especially attractive in that, even if she was great as Sarah Connor, I would argue better than Linda Hamilton. Whatever, she’s great as Cersei and a wonderful actor.

  • On NCW’s level of English: It’s correct that we don’t dub or movies and TV shows in Denmark; we merely subtitle them, so people of all ages are constantly hearing English spoken (songs on the radio, TV, movies, internet etc.) On top of that, our generation (We’re only three years apart in age) had mandatory English in school from the 5th grade and German from 7th grade. I don’t have kids but I believe that now, English is started in schools as early as 2nd or 3rd grade.

Since no-one else in the world speaks Danish (which is an extremely different language to learn how to pronounce correctly, so don’t feel bad ;-)), we have to speak English, and many Danes enjoy practising through helping out tourists, etc.

  • Alex: Mrs. H’ghar, I assume the english accent is his default English and he makes an effort with the american one so he can be cast in american productions. Otherwise why bother with the first one?

American English and “proper” English are merely different accents.
    At least for a non-native-speaker.
I’m a Swede and I tend to do the same.
When in UK I speak more “English” and when with American friends I speak more “American”.

  • Richard Madden: as loveable as he is gorgeous, as gorgeous as he is talented, as talented as he is thoughtful – a gift from any and all gods!

Annoying Aussie interviewer: “Are you single?”
    Kit Harington: “No comment.”
Women (and men) around the world: DAMN!
    Kit Harington’s girlfriend: “BAZINGA!”

  • Kathrina Martinsen: On NCW’s level of English: It’s correct that we don’t dub or movies and TV shows in Denmark; we merely subtitle them, so people of all ages are constantly hearing English spoken (songs on the radio, TV, movies, internet etc.) On top of that, our generation (We’re only three years apart in age) had mandatory English in school from the 5th grade and German from 7th grade. I traveled for six months throughout Europe years ago and was stunned by the English proficiency of people in Denmark – better even than the Swiss. It made me want to clean up my sloppy American grammar and vocabulary.

And yes, the only people more friendly toward American tourists than the Danes were the Irish.

  • Michelle Fairley and Richard Madden have such amazing chemistry together (in a non-romantic manner, of course) both on-screen and off; NCW is the man, and the best spokesperson the show currently has; agree with most that the lady interviewing Kit was hot but annoying.

  • I like Kimmel, but, sheesh, did he have a brain fart or something? I can’t believe he asked Nikolaj if Elvis was known over there. He’s from Denmark, Jimmy, not Mars.

  • John Connington, some of these ad companies are shady and like to throw in stuff like that without my consent, as it brings them more money. Can you let me know what the ad was for? I will get it removed. Thanks!

  • HouseLark: I think it’s probably I just prefer brunettes. I prefer brunettes too, but I felt Lena’s appearance in S1 didn’t capture the character very well. She just wasn’t golden enough. You could tell she was a made-up blonde. And I found her infamous raised eyebrow a bit overplayed at the cost of her character last season with the exception of spectacular scenes like her frank exchange with Robert. Aside from her revamped appearance, there’s much more to love in S2 when you have real gems like her short-lived heart-to-heart with Tyrion.

  • about the Blackwater:
“And if the Kingslayer is impressed, you know this is gonna be good.”

    niiiice

  • Winter Is Coming,

There was a full screen pop up that I saw that seemed to be for MySpace. I wasn’t paying that close of attention to it, so I apologize if that isn’t accurate. (MySpace was certainly mentioned prominently, though it may have been for another company).

  • Thanks to WiC and everybody else who posted links…these are so great to warm up for Sunday night! And who else wants to see Davos in his mankind? Don’t get jealous Jaqen, a woman can look without harm.

Is anybody else not seeing the videos anymore? They’re blank boxes now. WTF?

  • Albert: American English and “proper” English are merely differentaccents.
    At least for a non-native-speaker.
I’m a Swede and I tend to do the same.
When in UK I speak more “English” and when with American friends I speak more “American”.

I was trying to make a joke since they’re basically the same language with minor differences, but I guess it wasn’t a good joke since nobody understood it! It is great that you can adapt to the environment that way though…I’m sure I’d be lost attempting your language!

  • the Wall Street interview with Kit is way better than the Extras one. I hate it when female interviewers do that. Jeeze, insult his intelligence much?
