For whatever the reason I’m a bit ruffled by Simone’s wardrobe lately. I don’t see why she’s not allowed to wear normal clothes during the recaps. Or even a suit of armor… that would be great. :|

In the show he is pretty much responsible (that is, irresponsible), which paints him as a bigger idiot than necessary.

Sam’s position: “I love manual labor, I could watch it all day.”

On the plus side, he reads a lot. I’m pretty sure he knows more about the dragonglass spear tips than he told us. Might come in handy. Now if only he had read about the need to wear a hat in -30C weather…

    Great job Simone!

That leather tank top is badass! You definitely look good in black, with your dark hair, eyebrows and eyeliner… Arianne Martell aint got nothing on you girl! =P

Yeah I agree this was the “quiet before the storm”. This kind of thing is what makes GoTs unique and IMO more enjoyable then other shows. I have this analogy to try to explain why…

Most TV series are like “shooter style” games. Where you turn on the game, it loads up, and you rush out there and kill stuff. You get instant gratification that only takes a few minutes and it is fun… However, GoTs is more like an “RPG” style game. You invest hours and hours doing quests and tedious tasks but when you finally do what it takes to get the item/skill you want, you get a much greater feeling of gratification. You gamers out there understand what I mean. Basically, GoTs is much deeper and more rewarding because of character/plot development. These “quiets before the storm”, episodes are needed…

Yara did have some fleshing out. She shows this tough kickass Viking girl attitude to Theon but we see that she actually does “love” him so to speak… He is and will forever be her baby brother. Reminds me of a saying that goes really well for Theons storyline.

    “Blood is thicker then water”

This is why Theon had to choose his family over the Starks. Though he went about it in a totally cowardice, dishonorable way…

Jon Snows storyline is going well. I like the changes. Rattleshirt looked cool. When I first saw the picture of him I thought it was to “Skeletorish”, but it looks good. People forget, just because Jon has some facial hair doesn’t make him a man. He is still a boy and he still thinks like a boy. It is good they are portraying him this way. We can really watch him grow and mature in seasons to follow.

Robb’s romance with Talisia is a good thing for the show and something that has really been missing. Now we finally have a romantic storyline. I am glad about this because now maybe D&D wont feel the need for Ros/Brothel scenes anymore (unless they are actually important for the story). With all the couples that are now established, or soon to be established, we can get a dose of meaningful sex scenes (True Blood style and a good part of the reason many female viewers watch True Blood, for their weekly dosage of “hunk” and supernatural romance).

I liked Talisia’s “CPR” story and she seems like a girl Robb would totally fall for. I have a feeling D&D are going to build up her character much more then GRRM’s books did and that is fine with me. She may become the new ‘Ros” for some viewers but I am glad Robb has a woman now and they are fleshing her out wonderfully.

Robb putting Cat in timeout is fine. He needs to look tough in front of his men. Hopefully, in private, Cat can explain to him what happened and he will be understanding…

Brienne and Jaime scenes are going to be totally epic! Season 3 tease for sure!

Jaqen H’ghar… That character turned out better in the TV show then in the books IMO. He is so cool and fun to watch. I really hope we see more of him. We all know he still needs to give Arya the coin I hope D&D change it up a little from the books and we see way more of Jaq. I feel like if we don’t, he will end up being like the “Darth Maul” of this series. Totally badass and underused… Know what I mean?

Tyrion… The main thing about Tyrion that I get from the books, that I really haven’t seen a lot of people mention on here, is that he is just a man that wants to be loved. It is really sad actually. The book Tyrion is a super ugly and stunted dwarf. (Peter is one of the best looking dwarfs in hollywood, so in no way is he close to being the Tyrion in the books as far as appearance goes). Tyrion is wicked smart, witty and does what he must to help out with the success of his family (House). However, all he wants in life is to have a woman love him. He understands it is not possible considering his appearance so he is willing to “rent” a whore to fulfill this need. He just wants the whore to at least play along and be “his”. When Tyrion was with his first (and only) true love Tysha. He must have had such a great feeling. After Tywin ripped her away from him in such a brutal fashion, I feel Tyrion is forever searching to have that feeling of “being loved” once again…

So that scene with Tyrion being emotional with Shae made perfect sense. It was effectively shown that Shae didn’t feel the same love for him… Which is so sad for Tyrion.

The relationship of Stannis and Davos is being brought to life with perfection.

I am glad that Bran and Rickon are in the cryps. It leads me to believe that at least one of the Reeds will be there to greet them and lead Bran along his journey in season 3 when they get out…

I really liked last weeks episode. I guess my thirst for action is sure to be quenched tomorrow night. Can’t freaking wait!!!

Like most of the great changes on the show, Jon’s being responsible for the NW brothers is an externalizing of his internal fears (like Dany’s dragons being taken). That’s one of many ways that a visual medium functions differently from a written medium.

    Arthur,

Nice post. I agree to 95 % really. What I disagree with is the Jaqen storyline. Sure, it wouldn’t be bad to see him some more. I didn’t even bother about this character in the book tbh, until he showed his real face that is!
But he’s really enjoyable in TV, and the actor is doing a superb job…one of my favourite characters of season two.

Yet I don’t want him to be overused. Let him be a Darth Maul, a stranger, a mystery, a legend.

A beautifully realistic theme in ASOIAF is that some things never turn out the way they should like in real life. There might be a nice build up which never explodes, but leavesyou hanging, kind of disappointed . Or an awesome character that just comes AND goes, or as you put it “underused”.

Ofc, for the Tv-audience this usually doesn’t work out. If a character is enjoyable, use him more until he/she gets weary is usually the mantra…Otherwise people won’t be satisfied.

Soo many good series do this and they get incredibly boring after the first or second season; LOST, prison break (from what I’ve heard), 24, Heroes etc etc etc.

But GRRM & ASOIAF never intended to satisfy the masses, but create a realistic-ly magic world. This is why the book-series are so incredibly good, at least for me.

And please don’t take me as a purist, I’m not.
I have enjoyed every change they have made thus far – I even like Ros once in a while. (except one – that Cat should have got a letter from winterfell regarding her children. Would make more sense for the new viewers I think, but I think D&D might be going somewhere with this).

Pheew, more than I intended to write…
Anyways cheers for D&D, I don’t understand the haters, it has been an enjoyable season, and I CAN*T WAIT UNTIL BLACKWATER!!!

Female bikini armor has no place anywhere at any time until its supporters deign to parade themselves down the street wearing steel plate thongs for our enjoyment.

BTW, that screen-cap of Catelyn and Robb is priceless, she has that “Mom” look that most of us have seen many times growing up. Robb has the “longing for love” look. And yeah, why didn’t he ask her who was that Amazonian in Armor Catelyn was shadowed by? Some things we’ll never know.

Simone, if you ever come to Portugal, allow me to guide you through Porto, my town. Good food, bars and people, and narrow streets more charming than those in Kings Landing. One of the best views from the top of a bridge and into the sunset. And with or without the help of Port or just some caipirinhas we would have a great laugh.
Hope you dont disappear once the season ends.
    All the best!

Since there is no canon pronunciation of Mr Martin’s names (and the series certainly doesn’t set standards but just provides another possibility), Ms Boyce can pronounce “Ygritte” the way she likes – which is probably the way she got used to while reading the novels.

Once she said her own name, Ygritte’s pronunciation was established on the show. Sure, she can say it any way she wants, but will lose viewership of those who’ve actually watched the show and become accustomed to the pronunciation the character used herself. Grip on yourself why dontcha!

Uh yeeeaaahhhh…except for the fact that GRRM, the writer of the series, pronounces it as EEEEEEgritte in interviews. Pretty sure his opinion would be the determining factor.

Yeah – GRRM’s pronunciation is different from both mine and the show. He always calls them the Doth-rack-eye, not Doth-rack-eee. Can you imagine if George Lucas told you it was Jed-eee instead of Jed-eye? I think the point is that fake words don’t have a set pronunciation.

Except Damphair – that’s an obvious portmaneau.

    Mrs. H’ghar,

    LionOfLannister,

Firstly, Mr Martin has, on several occasions, pointed out that he does not want to establish any ‘canon’ pronunciation for his names because stuff like that should be left to the readers’ (respective viewers’) imagination and preference – not least because his readers come from many different countries with different languages and thus intuitions about pronunciation.

Secondly, if there are, indeed, people who would stop watching Ms Boyce’s recaps because she pronounces the names in her own way, those people are crétins and nobody – least of all Ms Boyce – should take them seriously.

Thirdly, if you want to appeal to Mr Martin’s authority in matters like this, learn about his actual opinion* first – instead of making an ass out of yourself.

*: See my first point above to learn about his actual opinion…
