Casting News

EW scoop on S3: The Reeds are in and so is Blackfish!

Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd has the (partial) cast list of characters introduced in Season Three. Reproduced below with original role descriptions:

• Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.
• Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.
• Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.
• Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.
• Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.
• Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.
• Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.
• Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.
• Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.
• Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.
• Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.

Mind you that this might not be all, so please no cries of despair (as if, after you know who definitely is in):

Now, if a character is not listed here, does that mean they are not in season three? Apparently not. Because Benioff then added:  “And a few others … holy hell that’s a lot of new faces.”

Hear Me Roar: So now we know. I am especially happy for our long-time reader Blackfish Blues. As noted in the article, since they are adapting the third book over two seasons, there would be more uncertainty as to the roles cast this year – and that has now been put to rest. Thank you, David!

• Terrific news! Can’t wait to see the Queen of Thorns and Mance Rayder, especially.

• So, does this mean that they’re recasting Beric Dondarrion, or getting the actor from season 1 (who played him for a few seconds) back?

• Great news! :D

I haven’t re-read aSoS since last year, so I don’t remember who is introduced in it: excluding these, which new characters whould we expect?

• Half way through the second book and I can’t believe they kept out the Reeds. They’ve been great and pretty essential so far.

Also excited for Mance & Beric.

• WOW! Reeds and Blackfish all in one post. Can’t wait for filming to get started! :)

• Wow so they finally put in Blackfish and the Reeds, I gotta say its a good move, and the Book readers/fans of those 3 have gotta be stoked. Seems to me the only person they can cry about now is Edmure…other then that who are they missing really? oh and Reek i suppose…Reed and Edmure

• Pumped to see the Blackfish! I’m also looking forward to seeing Beric and Thoros should be some good stuff!

• So, I guess Dondarrion is being re-cast? He was actually in a scene in season 1 when Ned sends him and his men out to bring Gregor to justice. I think we’ve also seen Stannis’ wife in a scene on the beach when they were burning the 7 gods in the first episode… non the less, BLACKFISH!!

• Indu:
Wow, unbelievable. That’s everything I hoped for and more.

(only quibble: did they forget Ramsay?)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think we meet him in ASOS.

• So the Reeds are in. Now hopefully fans of the Reeds will stop posting about how they need to be included.

• I assume they’ll recast Beric. The other guy only said like one word.

Mostly I’m just glad I’ll never have to hear complaining about the Reeds again.

• finally, now the complaining can stop.
I hope Val will be in as well, even though she’s missing from this list.

• Indu,

only quibble: did they forget Ramsay?

We already know Ramsay is in, as he’s been name-dropped on the show. I guess it is possible they’ll postpone his entrance for a year, though that would also mean a season without Alfie Allen. Given what poor Theon is about to go through, that might be the best way to play it.

• Joe:
So, I guess Dondarrion is being re-cast?

The man who played Dondarrion in Season 1 for maybe 10 seconds never was officially part of the cast. At that time somebody here explained that there was some legal contractual reason for that as this way they could recast him later on.

• Granted, this is only a partial list, but I’m wondering if Ramsay’s absence might validate FaBio’s Dagmar theory? Could be.

• Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.

So are they gonna age him down? One would think they’d mention him being Cat’s brother…

• First, the Blackwater episode, then the REEDS, Blackfish, Edmure, Beric, Thoros… Best TV series ever, many, many thanks to HBO, George and D&D.
My only tiny, very very little wish: more direwolves if it is possible.

• Amanda Zahorik,

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE QUEEN OF THORNS.

But now I may have to change my posting name to MY COUNTRY FOR STRONG BELWAS, because I want to see HIM on the next list.

DO NOT DENY ME A FAT WARRIOR TAKING A SHIT ON THE BATTLEFIELD, GUYS.

At this point, he is really all I want, because all my other wishes have already been fulfilled.

But we do know there’s more, because we also get VARGO HOAT. THIS POST HAS REQUIRED MANY CAPITAL LETTERS DUE TO EXCITEMENT.

• One role we know is in it that’s not listed is Vargo Hoat.

But where is the Bastard of Bolton? Could it be that they’ve managed to cast him for S2 and hide that info all this time? Could we see Ramsay in the season finale?

• The Reeds? The walking talking plot devices survived into the show? Maybe I was the only one looking forward to no Reeds. Osha looked positioned to take over everything. They were very convenient spewers of information. Maybe they can get the Falling Skys kids to play them. They were that level of annoying to me so at least it would be true to the book.

• Wow, a list that includes nearly all missing characters and people still find room to complain.

For the person looking for Edmure, he is clearly listed, and just because it is not specifically stated that hes Cat’s brother does NOT mean they are changing that.

Ramsay has already been stated as being cast, so his exclusion from this list, with a footnote stating that this list is not complete, should really not be raising so many alarms.

• I just opened a bottle of Champagne! Can we please start a religion worshipping D&D?
And how about a nice cup of gofuckyourselves to all the haters and flamers wasting their already useless time harrassing the producers for not casting the characters listed above?

• Woohoo woohoo woohoo!
Now what about Strong Belwas, haha
And I’m assuming we will have to get Patchface seeing as we get Shireen

• Perhaps Ramsay is not considered a ‘new’ character because he has already been mentioned in the show and is already involved in the action by now ? We just have not seen him yet. The actor will be part of season3 , but the character itself could be considered as late-season2 ?

• I really doubt they’ll keep Alfie Allen off-screen for a whole season. Either:
1. Ramsay’s absence from the list is just a slip.
2. they don’t want to name him (notice how Roose also never mentions his name), thus aiming for a twist similar to the one in the book.
3. Dagmer is Ramsay, something I still think is a bit far fetched. But then, what was that ‘extreme looking’ casting call about?

• Finally conversation about the Reeds can transition from complaints about their absence to complaints about the casting decisions. ;)

In all seriousness though, this is a whole bunch of good news.

• I guess if the Queen of Thorns is in, then we should get a Mace Tyrell too.

Not today’s news, as I had read this before, but I am still somewhat surprised Shireen is in. She did nothing important until now. I wonder if this means GRRM has plans for her for TWOW or ADOS?

• Mance, Seleyse, Shireen, QOT, Beric and Thoros = HELL YES!!!!!

Really pleased we are going to go deeper into the life of Stannis especially after his BAMF antics full on won me over last night, Mance will be awesome, QOT is going to be a great character on screen and bring on the duel between Beric and the Hound!

Il be honest that im one of the few people here who is not interested in the Reeds at all but whatever, its been a great week to be a Thrones fan and im glad for all the posters here who wanted them in so bad!

Hoping that the fact Ramsay is not mentioned doesnt lead to the theory that Dagmer is Reek comes true but we shall see.

Only thing im a bit gutted about is no mention of The Viper. I had a feeling they would hold him off until 4 but didnt want to believe it. This has made me think that will be the case and il have to wait 2 years to see one of my favourites but never mind, this is a good news week so lets enjoy it!

• The next time someone isn’t immediately in the story (say, Oberyn, who doesn’t show up here), can we all take a deep breath and the many reasons to parse out characters and just give the producers the benefit of the doubt?

So few of these characters above are actually necessary in the strictest sense. Yet collectively they add to the feel and depth of the story. And D&D recognize that and are executing on that. They should get a little credit when it would be easy to cut a Reed or two or Olenna,

• Wes,
Yes, that’s what I was thinking, but still a. both Cat and Lysa look at least 40 in the show b. they did mention that the Blackfish is her uncle.
Not a big deal anyway, I was just wondering.

• Happy for Blackfish Blues – because of Blackfish.
Happy for many people over here – no Reeds complaints any more.
Happy for myself – OLENNA F***IN TYRELL!!!!!!!!

• damn it, spoiler tags did not work. Sorry if anyone was spoiled by my post. il try delete and edit now

• My guess is that they’ll have Ramsay in armor & helm in the next episode – as a glorified extra. He’ll then do his betrayal of Theon directly after Theon accepts Luwin’s idea of taking the black. Then, they don’t need Ramsay & Theon until they film Dance.

No Red Viper, but they are casting Daario? I’m going through ASOS again right now, and the Red Viper appears several chapters before Daario. However, I could live with the Red Viper in Season 4.

Maggie Smith would be great as The Queen of Thorns. Too big a name/too expensive after Harry Potter, though?

• And hey, we’ll probably also get Left and Right. They’ll probably be played by extras but still.

• Macha:
I really doubt they’ll keep Alfie Allen off-screen for a whole season. Either:

I used to have the same opinion, on not wanting to lose Theon and Alfie. But here’s the thing: it’s two whole seasons. Of just pure torture. That’s not a storyline, it’s sadism.

They could show some torture and the Kyra escape, maybe half a season. But… it’s cheaper and easier to just simply ask him to come back in two years. There’s simply too much time to make up, and really, nothing happens. TBH, that half season makes a lot of sense to fit into the two seasons Feast/Dance/beginning of Winds will take.

Plus, the mere fact that Theon was alive was a shock to me. I think it could be a heckuva reveal in Season 5.

• Mance, The Reeds, The Blackfish, Tormund, and the Queen of Thorns? Amazing. This show is awesome already, and it’s going to get better next year.

Oh, and in terms of new scene creation. Please have the Queen of Thorns interact with as many people as possible. Thank you.

• Lannisport:

I think he’s going to be held off until Season Four as well, but D&D did say it’s not a complete list. So there’s still hope!

• No mention of Ramsay Bolton?! Or Oberyn Martell?

I could have lived without one of the Reeds to be honest, but if they think they need them both, then I’m not going to question it.

• Tre Svatek:

Ramsay has already been stated as being cast, so his exclusion from this list, with a footnote stating that this list is not complete, should really not be raising so many alarms.

Agree regarding Ramsay; I don’t think there is any question about casting him for S3.

It seems that my beloved Red Viper may not appear until S4. I can live with that knowing that the Blackfish and Olenna are in. So happy right now!

• Jesus, that’s a metric ton of characters. A few better bite the bullet in S2’s finale to make room.

• With so many characters coming in, I’m starting to get worried that the show is going to buckle under the pressure. This season has ridden a very thin line in that regard. They’ve managed to make it work this year, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that we lost so many main characters last year. Even so, there’s been much more jumping around this year than last, and it seems this will increase when more characters get piled on.

I understand the showrunner’s reasons for why the series only has 10 episodes, but I really wish there were more (like 12 or 13) to smooth out potential problems in this regard.

• NewJeffCT: n

A couple of guesses on Daario:

1. The show has likely to introduce romantic interests earlier, I think, because, without internal monologue, romance takes a bit longer to play out without being ridiculous. Also, it’s not Martin’s strong suit (though Daario is intentionally annoying).

2. If we get three cities in Slaver’s Bay, I think Dracarys is earlier than Episode 10. She does little before Astapor even if they drop Arstan into season 2. So if we keep three cities, I think things will be moved up. And if they combine two of the cities, it’s possible we get Astapor combined with Yunkai, even if it seems to make more sense in the short term to combine Yunkai with Mereen.

• Varamyr Fourskins:
Granted, this is only a partial list, but I’m wondering if Ramsay’s absence might validate FaBio’s Dagmar theory? Could be.

Bah. Nothing can validate Fabio’s theory. It’s an awful theory.

• Someone didn’t read the post…. Edmure is listed there. And I think the original Reek has been cut, so we’ll likely just see him in his true identity as Ramsay, who I’m sure we’ll get as he’s been mentioned a few times this season.
DoubleA012,

• What about the twns from harry potter..

RitariKnight:
And hey, we’ll probably also get Left and Right. They’ll probably be played by extras but still.

• John Webster:

I’m sure the showrunners would as well as long as HBO would okay the extra $15M three more episodes AND allow it to be delivered six months later.

At some point it may come to that. But apparently not this year. Luckily a lot of these characters are not independent storylines.

I wonder if they are going to cast Styr or will use Rattleshirt?

• Remaal,

Oberyn Martell will has season 4 as his season.

ramsay, reek & theon.

what to do until season 5? I guess they change some things here to have them both for the next 2 year even if it is just a few scenes.

Also great quote from the articel:

I guess we can start the list of unobtainable movie stars (or TV stars busy on other projects) for casting wishlists now :)

• I have never understood the rabid following the Reed siblings have inspired among some people.

As someone else mentioned, they’re pretty much walking-talking plot devices. But now that they’re cast, i’m just happy we won’t have to hear all the whining & moaning anymore. Thank the God(s)!

• I know Val doesn’t do a whole lot until the 5th book, but come on HBO, I’d appreciate the eye candy.

Also give me some Strong Belwas.

• I’m so happy for all of the characters listed. Big surprise is Grammy Thorns. She’s a wicked fun character. I picture a personality that is Betty Whiteish, but thornier! I hope she gets a good few jabs on Cersei.

THE REEDS! Both?? Wow. I’m glad they’re in because they’ll shed some light on the whole warging process and I they’re kind of an extension to Dany’s prophecy experience in the HOFTU. I still think Osha will stay with Bran and Rickon for a while yet before they split the kids.

Totally psyched for Mance!

• Wow great news!!! what a good day this news and I quit smoking made it through about 30 hours now so I think the hardest part is over. I think its a sign from the old gods that quitting was a good idea.

• Too much good news. What are people supposed to complain about now? I propose that we start by getting really upset by how they have butchered Blackfish. He is nothing like the tv version in the books. I don’t know who will play him or how he will be portrayed but I’m super upset that my assumptions on how D&D will handle him have ruined his character. He never said in the books what I imagine they will have him say on he show. I just imagined them making him a cannibal and that is not like the books at all. I hate to be a purist but I’m really angry with all these imaginary changes I’m thinking of.

• Alan: I used to have the same opinion, on not wanting to lose Theon and Alfie. But here’s the thing: it’s two whole seasons. Of just pure torture. That’s not a storyline, it’s sadism.

I agree with you completely, *I* personally would much rather keep the element of surprise. However, and I don’t know if this has to do with contracts or what-not, but they kept NCW and threw him a line or two. Yes, their situations differ, however it could also be on account of the show-runners being concerned over the casual viewer’s inability to remember who’s who on the show. I’m not saying this is how it should be, I’m just trying to place myself in their shoes. Also, and this may come off as cruel, but it’s not my intention (as I have a soft spot for Theon): showing Theon’s scenes under the Dreadfort may offer a brief moment of catharsis to a lot of viewers. They could, on the other hand, backfire and gross out other viewers. It’s a tricky decision, that’s for sure. I’m really curious to see how they’ll go about this.

• John Webster:

Have you forgotten that we’re getting the book split over 2 seasons? That’s 20 episodes.

• spacechampion: Bah.Nothing can validate Fabio’s theory. It’s an awful theory.

Especially condidering that the actors of Roose and Dagmar look about the same age.

• Can we please start a campaign for the great Dame Judi Dench for the Queen of Thorns? Or is she too big of a star to consider a tv role =(. I know she’d kill the role if they managed to somehow snag her for the show.

• OT, but my aunt apparently just met Kit Harington here in Vancouver (she works at a pub, he was there with his girlfriend?). Pretty jealous! But my aunt said they’re coming back in a week, maybe I should pop in and try to get a photo with Jon Snow!

• So who would this leave to be cast now? I would say if you take away minor characters that D&D might chose to either merge or not include then that list above is pretty complete. I can think of:

The Viper (LOVE him but as I said above wont be suprised to see him/ Dorne left until season 4)
Belwas (Il be honest I fear for him being included which makes me sad as he is hillarious and bad ass too. we shall see though)
Val (again, cool character but will they include her?)
Mace (Push him to season 4 and have him arrive when Oberyn comes into the story?)

Other than these I cant think of any major additions to the cast that would be made for Season 3. Theres The Goat but we have heard he is in already, a few people from Essos maybe? But I would think the list above will turn out to be pretty final bar a couple more.

• Vallos,

They are not walking talking plot devices!!! I love them so much because with all the bad thats happened to the starks there the one’s who got there back. not to mention there dad howland is the only man alive that knows what happened to lyanna stark!

• OMG, I read this post so quickly I just noticed the Blackfish… but the Reeds too?!? Wow!

• I am flabbergasted!

Only yesterday I was saying that Margaery’s out-and-proud ambition would mean no QoT. And I’d resigned myself to no Blackfish or Reeds either!

• queen of thorns.. hmm someone like Joan Plowright that could really come off mean or kind depending on the angle… I always imagined the QoT to be very old and borderline frail… she is supposedly around 70 right?

• Extremely happy news

Few of my favourite secondary characters. Never liked Daario though, that slimy bastard :P

• John Webster,

While I share some of the same concerns, it’s not so much the number of characters as the number of storylines that really matter. And none of these characters introduce new storylines. I think the # of storylines is pretty stable until FEAST and DANCE.

• Lannisport,

Val seems like somewhat important character in book 5, I’d contend she’ll be even more important going forward. I think she might be pushed into season 4 or 5, but not cut.

• I’m glad to see Olenna Redwyne is going to be in it. I could see her getting cut with Margaery being aged up and casting such a well known actress to play her. And I really hope Olenna is the one that does in Joffrey and they make it clear it’s her. Who wants power that badly that they’d let their grandchild marry Joffrey? There’s a certain level of unbelievability that people could be so power hungry to just sit back and let a sadist do whatever he wants.

• This is gonna sound idiotic (because there are tons of more important characters) but I’m REALLY HAPPY they’re including Queen Selyse. LOL I love her in the books.

Just one important absence I note: Val.

• Alan,

Luckily a lot of these characters are not independent storylines.

I was going to say the same thing. I think it is harder to introduce people like Stannis, Davos, and Mel because they are not being brought in through familiar characters. None of the characters mentioned here run into this problem.

• Best GOT week ever?

Michael Harper:
Anybody know when the ratings for Blackwater will be online?

TV by the numbers said they’d put it up tomorrow, holiday weekend delays. I’m curious to see what effect the hype had to fight the inevitable holiday weekend decline in initial viewings.

*edit* too slow!

• Meera Reed is the original Katniss Everdeen, lol.

Good news all around. I’m a Reed fan, and Oleanna & Sansa will be great to see too.
Never cared much for the Tullys. (sacrilege!)

• Aww man, that means if I name my band ‘Edmure Tully & The Blackfish’ then more people will start getting it.

:P

Great news. Glad to see Shireen, Queen of Thorns, the Tullys and the Reeds in.

• Perhaps the inclusion of the Reeds means that Bran & co. will go to Greywater Watch first?

• Drfunk: Can we please start a campaign for the great Dame Judi Dench for the Queen of Thorns? Or is she too big of a star to consider a tv role =(. I know she’d kill the role if they managed to somehow snag her for the show.

Honestly this could be such a cameo part. It could be like, three scenes across three different episodes or something. If she can make time for the god awful disaster of POTC4.. :(

• I hope D&D have frog girl and you know who make out, I have been disappointed that we are thru Dances and GRRM hasn’t allowed these two have any kissie facetime as of yet.

Helen Mirren for QoT

Daniel Day Lewis for Blackfish, can you just imagine him and Michelle or for that matter DDL and NCW sharing screen time together, it would be EPIC.

• RitariKnight: Tomorrow. They’ve been delayd due to the holiday weekend.

LordStarkington:

Thanks for letting me know :)

• John W,

My guess is they’ll have them meet up on the road to the wall or at a destroyed Winterfell to suggest heading to the wall. I don’t think it will be too difficult to bring them in.

• The thing with Margaery on HBO is to understand her scheming she needs someone she trusts to confide in. Olenna makes the perfect foil for her.

• franny_bee:
Meera Reed is the original Katniss Everdeen, lol.

Hey now, after Blackwater, show-Bronn might have something to say about that!

Hi-Fi,

SELYSE high-five! That was actually the news that struck me the most, LOL.

• I was worried about Queen of Thorns, glad she is in.
So what about THE Bastard, next week or next season, I really really REALLY hope that Dagmar theory is bs, I would hate it.

• The show should pull out all the stops to get Vanessa Redgrave as the Queen of Thorns, she would be absolutely perfect- if anyone has seen Coriolanus, the scene near the end with her and Ralph Fiennes is an example of powerful and outstanding acting.

Failing her, Maggie Smith would also be terrific. Much as I like Judi Dench I think she’s a bit soft for the role

• spacechampion,
I would say there is a very good chance Ramsey was not cast and will not be cast until season 4 or 5..that is..if they can be assured Alfie Allen is available two years from now (I guess they could do the Theon/Reek reveal in S4). We’ll see in in the next episode whether the burning of Winterfell occurs or not, but I can see Theon being taken prisoner by Dreadfort guards and being hauled off to the Bastard off stage.

• Hmm if the Viper storyline is pushed back to S4, is it fair to assume that Joff/Tyrion/Tywin event is also pushed back? S3 focus on the Riverlands and the North / Dany while KL takes a backseat secondary story?

On another note, would it be possible to recast Conan Stevens as the mountain once again for S4 (assuming the Viper is pushed to S4). Nothing against the new actor but casual viewers don’t even recognize him as the freak mountain of season 1 unless specifically told by the cast members.

• Off topic, but is there a high rez image of the Wildfire explosion online (haven’t found any) and I want it for a wallpaper.

• tysnow: I hope D&D have frog girl and you know who make out, I have been disappointed that we are thru Dances and GRRM hasn’t allowed these two have any kissie facetime as of yet.

Assuming you-know-who is Bran, I know what you mean, there’s nothing hotter than a prepubescent boy making out with a 16-year-old girl. Yup.

• My picks:

Mance Rayder: Gudmundur Thorvaldsson. Auditioned for the role.

Edmure Tully: Tony Curran. Auditoned for season 1 or season 2 (can’t remember). Starred in a couple of “Boardwalk Empire” episodes, so he might be on HBO’s list.

Beric Dondarrion: Sean Harris. Amazing character actor. Nina Gold (GoT casting director) has cast him in 5 other projects, so there’s a chance.

Tormund Giantsbane: Kristofer Hivju. Auditioned for a role earlier this month. Might also fit as Edmure with a trimmed down beard.

• Mean25,

I agree, I haven’t hated any of the changes so far but that one would annoy the hell out of me. It makes no sense. I don’t think that theory will pan out though.

• Others not included in the list, but with leaked auditions are:

Vargo Hoat
Mero The Titan’s Bastard

• haven’t had time to read all the comments, so I might not be the first, but

” WHO ARE THE REEDS ?!” could be the new cry.

QoT…Woo Hoo..complete with Right and Left ?

• robb17,

Actually if they cast Kaya as Meera then I will take back any complaining I have done about the Reeds! She is one of my favourites on the UK scene and could pull off role imo. Plus with the Gendry and Gilly parts already using Skins actors I would say its actually not that far fetched that it could happen!

• Dan: What are people supposed to complain about now?

Hey let’s try the lack of Patchface and see if it’ll catch on.

• Oberyn is introduced early in ASoS but doesn’t do much until near the end. So I doubt we will see him.

• Happy times!

Yes, this will make the Reed lovers stop complaining. Too bad the people complaining about the Reed lovers are still spewing their hate in comment after comment. Thank God for people like Lannisport. Why can’t we all be nice guys here?

Lannisport: Il be honest that im one of the few people here who is not interested in the Reeds at all but whatever, its been a great week to be a Thrones fan and im glad for all the posters here who wanted them in so bad!

• I hope we get Patchface, not because I particularly like him or think he has done anything significant, but there is definitly something about him and his prophetic songs that gets my imagination working…

• The Rabbit,

Kudos to D&D. Now that they are not restricted by HBO’s straitjacket of limited episodes to the story (1 1/2 or more for ASoS), all those secondary/tertiary characters can be properly introduced.

I think this shows the sign that HBO is finally recognized the primer position GoT in their buzz factor and lineup given that Broadwalk Empire and other expensive/prestigious endeavors are quickly fading away. The budget probably won’t be as tight and future seasons are all but assured. (Barring the collapse of ratings in season 5 due to the travelog nature of AFfC and ADwD)

• Yes! Tormund casting confirmed!

Yet we still await the casting announcement for Tormund’s giant member. Har!

• REEDS! BLACKFISH!!!

There are not enough words. I read the headline and before I could even process it all, I yelled out to myself, “Fuck yes!” Thankfully I’m working from home today. And pardon my somewhat inappropriate language, but this is a really big moment.

Brynden Tully and the Reed siblings are some of my favorite secondary characters, and I, along with a lot of you, have defended their inclusion in the series against others who thought/think they just aren’t necessary. This is a great day for us!

Where’s Blackfish Blues?! She’s going to be over the moon!

• Re: ratings, released late Wednesday, likely not online until Thursday because of Memorial Day.

• Lossoth:
Not a peep about Garlan Tyrell?I guess I’m the only one that liked him…..

I think we must assume he’s cut because Loras was wearing Renly’s armor at Blackwater, and Garlan is not very important at all.

• Good news, everyone!

There is only one thing left to say:
PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE.

“Under the sea, the birds have scales for feathers. I know, I know, oh, oh, oh.”

• oh-bb,

I’m glad you mentioned Strong Belwas. I will also be disappointed if he doesn’t make the show. Although if my memory serves me correctly, I’m not sure that he appears in the first half of SOS, so maybe it won’t be until season 4…

• RB:
So, does this mean that they’re recasting Beric Dondarrion, or getting the actor from season 1 (who played him for a few seconds) back?

He is considered just a featured extra, so, like Rickard Karstark, he will quite probably recast, just as Selyse Florent

• Macha,

Hey let’s try the lack of Patchface and see if it’ll catch on.

You mean the lack of the most pivotal character of any series of all time? I just don’t get why they are set on making him a genie who grants all of Davos’s wishes if they end up including him in the series. True, I just made that up but is there really any good reason not to get upset about that?

• The best part of the Reeds getting cast is, despite the fact that it’s telling, not showing, I really want to hear some version of The Knight of the Laughing Tree.

One of my favorite parts of the books.

• I like Kaya, but her schedule looks pretty full, but if she has a opening then lets do it. Bolger has lots of time on her hands (Her ABC pilot was not picked up!)

Lannisport:
Superdeluxe,

As someone mentioned above I would love Kaya Scoldelario to play Meera. Can see her in the role already!

• ace:
so if they are casting the Reeds, then we won`t see much of Osha next season?

Exactly, just like we saw nothing of Robb this year.

• Varamyr Fourskins:
Granted, this is only a partial list, but I’m wondering if Ramsay’s absence might validate FaBio’s Dagmar theory? Could be.

I’ve heard this rumour too, but it poses the question: How did Ramsey get to Pyke and remain incognito there thus allowing him to pose as Dagmar? Any suggestions?

• I wonder if they will replace Strong Belwas with Daario. I like SB but I would be OK with him being cut, pun not intended. Arstan plus Daario, might work?

• After the ecstatic shock of learning Reeds/Blackfish are in, I actually digested the rest of the article.

So Selyse and Shireen will be featured. Can someone clear something up for me? I thought I remember Melisandre saying (before she sleeps with Stannis) that his wife was sickly and that he had no children. Is this accurate or is my memory bad? Making Selyse sickly is obviously an easy change, but I’m just wondering how Shireen will fit in if I am remembering Mel’s words correctly.

I’m also glad to see the Queen of Thorns on the list. I was beginning to doubt her inclusion when they changed Margaery into such an outright schemer.

• Blackfish! I am so happy!

I can’t wait to see who Nina Gold chooses – it’s going to be somebody I never heard of, who is Just. Fucking. Perfect.

Now if they bring back the Greatjon, I promise I will never complain about anything GOT again.

Unless, of course, they leave Wyman Manderly out of Seasons 4-5 …. :-)

• So shall we start the speculations. Reeds are good and sweet but adding Patchface and Shireen… that have to mean something.

• I wish the whole “where are the Reed’s? anoyance will be over, but now we’ll have all of those people complaining about who was cast and their favorite Reed quote was removed or how they deviated from the picture they had for them in their mind.

I wonder how they’ll set the m up…maybe they will head for the swamp before going north?

good grief…..

• echo,

Also how does Roose have a kid that is almost the same age as him? For the question you brought up and this one I would really hate this change.

• And we will have quotes about people bitching about people talking about the Reeds. You know what this means? More and More conversations dominated by Reed talk, good or bad. Good job!

rib246:
I wish the whole“where are the Reed’s?anoyance will be over, but now we’ll have all of those people complaining about who was cast and their favoriteReed quote was removed or how they deviated from the picture they had for them in their mind.

• andrea,

Oh no, I’m glad she’s okay. I had heard there was another earthquake in Italy, but I totally forgot she lives there. :(

• G_Lee,

We Blackfish fans kept the faith and have been rewarded. I will take my champagne in a gofuckyourselves cup, thank you. :-)

• echo: I’ve heard this rumour too, but it poses the question: How did
Ramsey get to Pyke and remain incognito there thus allowing him to pose as Dagmar?
Any suggestions?

There’s no way Ramsay is Dagmer. It doesn’t add up. He’s been on the Iron Islands undercover long enough to grow into his mid-40s and become the FIRST MATE of a ship? No dice. He’s at the Dreadfort and will show up and capture Winterfell. Theon’s story can’t continue without Ramsay. And the fact that Roose Bolton has mentioned him a few times to Robb just proves that he’ll be in the show sooner or later. Since they didn’t have Bran treat and feast with all the Northern lords this season it didn’t make sense to have Reek/Ramsay just show up at Winterfell.

• Ramsay’s exclusion from this list makes me think we might be seeing him on Sunday :)

• Ian McNiece will make a perfect Wyman Manderly… whenever he’s cast.

And going through the list of actors from Rome, I see Lee Boardman might make a good Thoros, and Indira Varma could possibly play Arianne. I don’t know though, just throwing names out there. McNiece would be perfect though.

• I’ve noticed quite a few are complaining about characters that aren’t listed, despite B&B explicitly saying this ISN’T an exhaustive list, but I have a couple of ideas about what’s going to happen:

Since the Red Viper comes to King’s Landing for Joffrey’s wedding and to get some justice while he’s at it, I think we can safely suggest he won’t show up until season four. I think Joffrey’s wedding will be early in season four (maybe halfway through like Viserys’s death) and that Tyrion’s murder of Tywin and escape will the the penultimate episode. Season Five will likely open with Varys smuggling out Tyrion. As for people saying he shows up before Daario, so how can he be introduced later…um…Edmure and the Blackfish were introduced in BOOK ONE and are just now being included on the show. Among numerous other late introductions. So that argument doesn’t really hold water.

I’m also surprised that so many didn’t realize Edmure was being included since we’ve already seen audition footage. Based on the actor in that footage I’m gonna suggest “young” is a relative term. Late 30’s/early 40’s, possibly. I like Dean Lennox Kelly for him.

For that matter, since we’ve seen a Vargo Hoat audition, we know he’s in, as well, but no mention here.

I also think the young “extreme looking” man/boy is Ramsay. I mean, who else would it be?

Other characters I’m nearly certain will be included, despite the lack of mention, are Mace Tyrell, Strong Belwas, Qyburn, Lemoncloak, Tom O’Sevens and likely at least one of the more prominent Wildling women (Val, Dalla).

• The Reeds are in, so my whining is over! (Reed-haters in your face! just kidding as always!)

Now i’m so excited about the Blackfish, the witty Queen of Thorns and Thoros! And of course satisfied about the casting of Selyse and Shireen who i assumed, they had been cut out since Selyse was kind of an extra this season and Shireen totally ignored. I thought Stannis was childless in the series.

Dream casting:

Jojen: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2633535/

• My work computer sucks. I did try to put in spoiler tags, but they weren’t formatted properly, and now it won’t let me edit. Mods, help?

• Sword of the Morning: There’s no way Ramsay is Dagmer.

It is never established that Dagmer is Theon’s first mate on the show, and Dagmer is never seen interacting with another Iron Islander directly; and therefore could be someone posing as an iron islander who won the confidence of Theon by being (LITERALLY) the only person who isn’t mean to him. It is a far-fetched theory…but this point does not rebuke it.

• It’s interesting that the Bastard of Bolton isn’t listed. I think he’ll make his premiere Sunday even though most weren’t expecting him until Season 3. Although you can’t end Theon‘s Season 2 without his arrival.

• Kaeth,

Kaeth I am sending you all the excess positive vibes I have from this fabulous casting news! I quit five years ago after more than 20 years at two packs a day. The first six months are tough, but the cravings really do diminish more each day.

And there is very little in this world not related to sex that is more incredibly fabulous than NOT smoking. The money you save. The extra time you have (two, maybe three hours a day – I was stunned.) The places you can go, the people you can love ….

I am so happy for you.

• Dan,

Dagmer isn’t the same age as Roose. His actor is OLDER than Roose’s.

Kind of worried about Ramsay though. At worst, they could add him to Robb’s army after the sack of Winterfell and establish how much of an evil prick he is there.

• morbiczer,

I think it has more to do with the fact that Stannis needs a storyline next season. Also, they will have the opportunity for a lot more character development with his daughter and wife there.

• Mance Rayder: My dream casting is Nathan Fillion but I know this is not going to happen because of Castle.
Daario Naharis: Give me a name so I know who to hate already.
Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: All the Reed fans will complain they’re not ‘green’ enough, just you watch…
Edmure Tully: Oh good! Someone we can have blind hope in after certain events happen.
Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Now will he be gay or no?
Lady Selyse Florent: MUSTACHE!
Shireen: The poor girl is gonna have to wear an appliance . But I’m glad to see they’re setting up Stannis’ home life for the Wall stuff… and for the greyscale.
Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): HELL YES. Maggie Smith, please!
Beric Dondarrion: Oh who to cast? Beric is so awesome…
Thoros of Myr: I was sad not to see him at the tourney in S1, but it makes sense. It’d only raise too many questions for non-bookers.
Tormund Giantsbane: I <3 Husband to Bears! I hope they keep that story in!

• DavidBC: It is never established that Dagmer is Theon’s first mate on the show, and Dagmer is never seen interacting with another Iron Islander directly; and therefore could be someone posing as an iron islander who won the confidence of Theon by being (LITERALLY) the only person who isn’t mean to him. It is a far-fetched theory…but this point does not rebuke it.

He calls himself Theon’s first mate when they first meet. And I really doubt that the entire crew is just going to accept an imposter in that role without question. Yes we don’t see him interacting with them but it’d be kind of hard to avoid while traveling by ship and land to Winterfell, stopping to attack another castle on the way.

• QUEEN OF THORNS QUEEN OF THORNS i just jumped up and down in happiness, now i need to look at old British actresses and try to guess who it will be.

• Lex: add him to Robb’s army after the sack of Winterfell and establish how much of an evil prick he is there.

Dominic Monahan

• But, D&D don’t know what they are doing and are cutting all the characters!!!!!!!

:p :p :p

• FINALLY confirmation on my Reeds! YAY!

One small concern I will note that nobody else has really touched on… There is going to be a strong fall off of Iron Islander stuff in the coming two seasons.

There isn’t that much in ASOS about that whole arc, and the book is being divided into two seasons

I just don’t want folks to forget about the Krakens!

• Lina,

i think the words were more like she gave you no heirs as in boys so i guess that’s what they’re going for.

• I don’t think we will see Ramsay during S3 and S4, just like we don’t see him in ASOS.
This story has so many point of views, so many locations. A lot of non-readers I know complain that it jumps too fast from one place to another. Casting Ramsay means adding another location, and some complexity to an already very complex story.
The main argument for Ramsay’s casting is that they would have to do without Alfie Allen for 2 years. Ok, but if they keep him in the show, what is it for ? One horrible torture scene per year ? Or they make big changes to the story but then -> complexity + no surprise when ‘Reek’ appears.
If they don’t keep him we can expect to see him again for a surprise come-back in season 4 … if we are lucky enough to get there.
We may see Ramsay him episode 20, though, as a full-plate warrior or maybe as Dagmer (I’m waiting for a solid explanation then)

And of course, I’m very happy with all these casting news !

• Lina,

She said that his wife gave him no “sons”. It sounded like the producers weren’t sure themselves if they were gonna bring Shireen in at that point, so they chose Mel’s words real carefully.

• Varamyr Fourskins:
Ian McNiece will make a perfect Wyman Manderly… whenever he’s cast.

I just hope they won’t cast George RR Martin as Manderly and make him delay the next books.

• Hopefully we will have some Riverland action from A Clash of Kings adapted to the 3rd season. Nicely done! Also don’t forget about Ramsay Snow, the Bolton bastard, who was also announced to be in the 3rd series cast list. The actors so far are awesome. Peter is fenomenal, Sean was really great, Emilia is charming, Lena is convincing. The Hound (Rory), Varys (Conleth), Margaery (Natalie) and Davos (Liam) are all beyond my expectations. I can’t wait a year more for the next season!

• Azazelus,

If I remember right I think the early Iron Island chapters from AFFC are supposed to take place along the same timeline as the second half of ASOS so the Iron Islands may only take a backseat for one season. I would imagine at least Victarion, Aeron and Euron may well be cast for season 4.

• Awesome! not sure if this has been posted, but I really want Maggie Smith to play the Queen of thrones.

• I think he’s cool too, but to be fair, he is one of the characters that could easily be replaced by another already-existing character, as they have done with Loras. I have read the books and really love them as they are, but, since in television you can’t stop and turn back a few pages to remeber who’s who, I really do hope that they cut down some of the characters…

As for the Reeds, I do like them in the books, and I’m glad that they we will get to see them, but it bothers me a little that their introduction will probably mean we will not get to see much more of Osha, and I have been really enjoying Natalia Tena in the part. As far as we know from Osha and Rickon in the books, I could have imagined they removing the Reeds entirely and have Bran and Rickon go together beyond the wall, alongside Hodor and Osha (as someone have said it, they would need someone for Bran to interact with, besides Hodor). But now that we will have the Reeds, Osha and Rickon may go in their own way (which, to be frank, I don’t recall right now).

Lossoth,

• omg Blackfish! omg the Reeds! I’m happy about Mance and Edmure and co. too but especially estatic about those we’ve been missing since SEASON 1!!! I’m even surprised people like Beric and Shireen are getting casted. awesome. I’m already going through withdrawal and we still have one episode left…

• Finally some sorely missed favourites will make appearances! Wonder how on earth they are going to introduce the Reeds now though. And why? Maybe they will have more significance in future books? Cause I think Osha is doing their job pretty well so far, and there is no reason I know that Luwin can’t go south with Rickon. I assumed that was why they had him discover them down in the crypts.

Btw, is Redwyne Olenna’s maiden name? I always had her down as pure Tyrell (by marriage).

• oh-bb:
Amanda Zahorik,

LOL man, thanks for the laugh :)

Personally I am still waiting for Jhalabar Xho.

• Josh Parker – is there a way you can edit your post? Those are some huge spoilers to non-readers.

• Thais: . But now that we will have the Reeds, Osha and Rickon may go in their own way (which, to be frank, I don’t recall right now).

If my memory serves, Osha and Rickon part ways with the Reeds, Hodor/Bran and we hear NOTHING of them until Bran is dreaming about the wolves and sees Shaggydog fighting a unicorn.

Correct me if I’m wrong?

• oh-bb:

Reading this has convinced me that Brian Blessed should be our Tormund.

• Michael Tschuertz,

If there is a problem with cast bloat, then maybe they should take full advantage of some characters getting sidelined for some periods of time. There is no way that I’d be interested in seeing Theon tortured for 2 + years. It would dilute his ADWD storyline, and like someone mentioned above, that’s not a plot, that’s just pure sadism.

• As if I havent already been dreaming exploding green fire enough as it is, my poor overworked fangirl brain just exploded (happily) at this news. Thanks a whole lot WICnet; you and HBO/ D &D are killing me with the awesomeness. I may be able to sleep again properly come next April ;P

• Katjathere is no reason I know that …

The reason I suppose Luwin can’t go south with Rickon is because he will be cut in pieces by Ramsay on sunday.

• Wow over 200 comments already.

Judi Dench as the Queen of Thorns. Please. No one fits the role better!

• The Reeds! Awesome! I’m just curious how they’re gonna manage Jojen’s green dreams, when they’ve already given one to Bran… But still. Awesome.

I’m also excited about Thoros :D

• Mimsy,

Somehow they are going to have to introduce the Reeds on the road or something. So we are going to have Osha a little while longer, which would be a good thing. I don’t think that Osha would have worked as replacement Reeds and as Bran’s tour guide beyond the Wall because of certain things that were already established in her character in Season 1. (She wants to go as far south as south goes. She’s afraid of the direwolves. She doesn’t really have as much connection to the mystical.) I’ve really liked what they did with Osha this season and I know that Rickon will be in good hands when they go to cannibal island.

• We may see (aka NOT see) Ramsay and the sack of Winterfell through Osha’s eyes. Eg: the Ironborn are drunk and cocky and cheering themselves on (kinda like Theon in the ep 20 preview) when there is an attack. Osha keeps the kids in the crypts while there are general horror-sounds above. They eventually emerge to find everyone dead and the castle smoking. We never see who did it, and we don’t see what happened to Theon, though it might be assumed he’s in a stack of bodies somewhere. They leave Winterfell…

This random speculation brought to you by me, who is usually wrong tbh. But there are many ways the sack can happen without us actually meeting Bolton’s bastard until a later season.

They can even use Bran’s dreams to ‘show/not really show’ it.

• Really excited for Queen of Thorns. I was a little worried because TV Margeary is older and fully capable of some scheming of her own, but the Queen is so lively and refreshing character in the books I hoped D&D will still want her onscreen. So we will have grandma and grandaughter scheming together, works great for me.

Red Viper isn´t important till PW so I quess this confirms PW will be season 4.

Belwas is really just a part of the scenery. He has one bad ass scene and next disappears back to background. I don´t think D&D include him with actors. If he is on (and they need to keep the amount of characters around Danny reasonal) he will be just some extra/underfive.

Don´t care about Tullis, but Robb and Cat need something to do till the RW. I quess they will fight with Mountain and Vargo Hout who controls the Harrenhall now?

Reeds make sense as Bran will do nothing but wander in wilderness for two seasons. He better atleast have some companion closer his age.

• Good news, but I am a little concerned that they are espanding the cast too much. Blackfish is cool, but he doesn’t serve too much of a purpose. Ditto the Reeds at this point. Queen of Thorns I was worried about due to the expansion of Margaery, but I suppose she can still get in a few good scenes.

Does anyone else think Shireen will take over the role of SPOILERS ………………………… Edric Storm?

• Hi-Fi:
Remaal,

Shirley Henderson would be amazing as Selyse.

Can you imagine Stephen Dillane and Shirley Henderson doing a scene together? ROFL. Because I CAN. I’ll drink to that!

EDIT: EDIT:
sunspear,
I was thinking the same thing, but that’ll be a bit of a stretch, don’t you think? You have to believe Stannis (and Selyse!) would actually consider sacrificing her, until Davos convinces him otherwise, and that would take his character in a completely different way than presented in the books. Mel’s a fanatic, Stannis isn’t really, and he seems to care about his daughter’s well-being.

• Virtus,

If we haven’t seen Greywater Watch in the books yet, I doubt we’ll get it in the show. Maybe they start heading that way and bump into the Reeds on the way. It will be an interesting first meeting. Bran and Co will be extremely weary of anybody they meet. I wonder how the Reeds will get them to trust them.

• Carne,

Gudmundur Thorvaldsson is my pick too. heard that he auditioned, checked him out, and i think he has both the look and acting chops to pull off Mance

• tysnow: Steven Swanson, they aged them up, so show Bran is 12-13 and will be 14-15 over next two years.

No, at the beginning he’s 8 in the book and 10 in the show.

I think you’re letting some leftover adolescent fantasies of scrappy-but-cute older girls color your opinion here.

• I have a feeling they will leave Val out until Season 4, I could be wrong but if this is an adaptation of the first half of ASOS, she is literally in one scene in that half where she doesn’t even speak, she is only introduced as Dalla’s sister so I think it is easy enough to have an introduction later on because the rest of her scenes are towards the end of ASOS and obviously ADWD.

• How about some royal tomfoolery with our prophetic pal Patchface?

I’m genuinely shocked at the Reeds announcement. I didn’t think we’d get them. :]

• I’m worried about the amount of characters..

My biggest concern is people will start to loose interest, when the amount of characters hydra to pile up, the tullys, the reeds are all sub characters in a way.

But I do hope we see a mountain vs the red viper duel, that would be awesome!

• 20 episodes for Book 3? That’s really huge. I can’t think of anything better than that. They have already run into some problems juggling plot lines, lets hope the extra season evens things out a bit.

• Remaal: Shirley Henderson (my dream casting

Kiss me Kate! she is the best Kate! (Shakespeare re-told: The taming of the shrew). I would love to see her as any character. And with Dillane?, oh my :)

Did anyone saw her with Rufus Sewell?

• avintageguppy,

I agree. As much as I’d love to see Val in Season 3, she can easily be postponed to Season 4. They can have her first appear when the Wildlings attack Castle Black.

• FUKK YES!!!! Season 3 just got awesome!! The Reeds and the Blackfish. SWEET! Game of Thrones owns all of the TV world! ROFL!

• Marisa: So are they gonna age him down? One would think they’d mention him being Cat’s brother…

He’s described as being young in the book. I don’t believe they ever drop an age, but I always imagined him in the 24ish age range, a man but still a fairly young one.

• Macha,

I agree somewhat.I have no desire to see two season of torture porn(I HATE that the Saw movies even exist) but it’s unrealistic to say to an actor “take a break for two years and don’t take any jobs that will make you unavailable” There is a chance that Alfie Allen won’t be available for season 5 and they will need to recast.

• oh-bb,

dude, I was just listening to roy dotrice’s audiobook of aSoS, and Belwas just shat in front of Mereeen after beating some turd harpy prince in single combat… PRICELESS !!

Dude, I gotta see that on screen, would be friggin hilarious

• paylor,

I’ve always liked Osha as well. Especially after she became so attached to the Stark boys and made it her obligation to care for them like a momma bear. She fears the North, but right now the South is dreadful and almost impossible to travel safely with two little ones. She’s great and all, but she is so not the person to guide Bran on his mystical powers, which is why it’s perfect for the Reeds to come into the picture.

I’m thinking they’ll travel together for most of season 3 and then she’ll split with Rickon. Where Rickon is going, he’s going to need a serious protector and she can fill that spot.

I wonder if the Reed introduction will be as simple as a noise coming up behind the traveling Starks and it ends there so we can open up the season with the story? There are so many different ways D&D could introduce us to the Reed kids, but it would be cool to have them pull a ninja move on us.

• Steven Swanson: No, at the beginning he’s 8 in the book and 10 in the show.

I think you’re letting some leftover adolescent fantasies of scrappy-but-cute older girls color your opinion here.

I have to agree with this. Bran (book bran, aka Bran) is way too young to be with a 16 year old girl. I mean I can see why Bran might want to, but why exactly would Meera decide to be with a crippled nine year old kid whose on his way to becoming a tree? I hope they keep the small things (like her catching Bran looking at her), but I hope they don’t turn it into a romance.

Like San/San. Nothing like a naive thirteen year old girl making out with a burned violent child murderer to tug at your heart strings.

• ALex: Macha, I agree somewhat.I have no desire to see two season of torture porn(I HATE that the Saw movies even exist) but it’s unrealistic to say to an actor “take a break for two years and don’t take any jobs that will make you unavailable” There is a chance that Alfie Allen won’t be available for season 5 and they will need to recast.

And even if they don’t he’ll have to do some serious Raging Bull in reverse and transform into an emaciated shell of himself.

• andrea,

Yes. I did see her with Rufus He-is-so-hot Sewell in Taming of the Shrew. That’s the character I referenced in my mind when I thought of her for Selyse. lol She was amazing!!

• Steven Swanson: And even if they don’t he’ll have to do some serious Raging Bull in reverse and transform into an emaciated shell of himself.

Like Christian Bale in The Machinist. That was some really messed up shit man. He lost so much weight he almost died. Really didn’t look like Bale at all.

• Jess:
omg Blackfish!omg the Reeds!I’m happy about Mance and Edmure and co. too but especially estatic about those we’ve been missing since SEASON 1!!!I’m even surprised people like Beric and Shireen are getting casted.awesome.I’m already going through withdrawal and we still have one episode left…

I’m also surprised about Shireen, but Beric has a pretty meaty role in the third book, wouldn’t you say? I’m not at all surprised he’s being cast, just that he’s being re-cast (didn’t know he was an extra during his S1 appearance.)

• Totally see where you are going with this casting idea! I am so happy that the mighty Queen is in – she has some of the best lines in any of the five books! This post is making me super excited for seasons 3 and 4 – things are looking up – except the fact that we have to wait until next :(

Crannogman:
Siân Phillips as QoT

Anyone who’s seen I Claudius will know why.

• ALex:

Theon is human garbage. Screw him. He deserves everything he got. Just like the Lannisters.

• Stannis for King: The show should pull out all the stops to get Vanessa Redgrave as the Queen of Thorns, she would be absolutely perfect- if anyone has seen Coriolanus, the scene near the end with her and Ralph Fiennes is an example of powerful and outstanding acting.

I’m not disagreeing with your choice but the show absolutely should not pull out all the stops to cast a big name in a minor role. Now if a big name is willing to join the cast at a lower than normal rate that would be a different story.

andrea: there was an earthquake in Milan this morning and she lives there (or near by). She is fine though.

I don’t want to make light of an earthquake but I can not resist. Is there any chance the earthquake started when she found out the Blackfish had been cast? ;p

• People need to realize, again, the show is not the books. Jaime has already been around more in this season than he was in ACoK, same with Littlefinger. They also won’t just cut out a character for more than two seasons just because that’s the way the books came out. I’d look for Ramsay and Theon and at least a portion of their ADWD storyline to be moved to up, because it IS happening simultaneously with much of the other action.

• AdrianI’d look for Ramsay and Theon and at least a portion of their ADWD storyline to be moved to up, because it IS happening simultaneously with much of the other action.

This is correct because book 4 and 5 are happening pretty much at the same time.

• Nice I wasn’t expecting The Blackfish to appear, nor did I expect the Queen of Thorns.

No could all you Reed fans please stop whinging ;-)

Do we really need Stannis’ wife or daughter ?

Surely Mace Tyrell is going to feature ?

• Hi-Fi,

I wouldn’t know where to start, to be honest. But, I’m not worried. Henderson is pretty well established in the UK, I very much doubt Nina needs us to bring Shirley to her attention.

• Lex:
OT, but my aunt apparently just met Kit Harington here in Vancouver (she works at a pub, he was there with his girlfriend?). Pretty jealous! But my aunt said they’re coming back in a week, maybe I should pop in and try to get a photo with Jon Snow!

Or maybe, you could let him enjoy some private R&R with his main squeeze instead of stalking him!

• Madmage,

lol agreed. I was already soooo over the complaints, especially since Bran’s plot this season worked out just fine without them.

• Hi-Fi,
Remaal,
andrea,

She was fantastic in Taming of the Shrew, indeed! They worked great together in The Last King, too.
My other option for Selyse would be Haydn Gwynne (Calpurnia in Rome – Nina Gold connection established, Miss Wenceslas in Sherlock).
I’m sure that whoever they’ll end up casting, the Dragonstone scenes next season will be golden. Can’t wait to see Shireen!

• Ok so we have Blackfish and the Reeds but were are Mya Stone and Harwin so sick of Ros taking screen time from legitimate characters lol

• Michael Tschuertz,

Really, he is a dirt bag that screwed over people who treated him with respect and took him in. The Starks could have screwed Theon and made his life a living hell. Did they? Nope, they did not. Theon is on the permanent shit list IMHO. Damn backstabbers. Bring on the torture.

• To any who have expressed concern over the idea that the show might “buckle” under too large a cast, let’s keep in mind that the cast gets thinned pretty damn substantially pretty damn soon here. Assuming D&D stick with the books on these (and I have no reason to think they won’t in this arena) we’re going to lose just about as many characters as we gain in the next season (or two):
-Balon Greyjoy
-Robb
-Catelyn (sortakinda)
-Tywin
-Ygritte
-The Old Bear
-Joffrey

…Some of the added characters in the EW list will almost surely get a fraction of the screen time of quite a few in that list I just posted.

• Remaal: He-is-so-hot

yes he is. He was just a perfect Petruccio on heels ;)

Remaal: She was amazing!!

– “kiss me Kate” (Petruccio shouts)
– “Up yours weirdo”
(do you remember?) hihihii yes, she was incredible.

• Reeds!

Blackfish!

Queen of Thorns!

OMG! I was almost certain all those characters are cut for budget reasons. Now lets start speculating about who will they cast!

• With this influx of new characters I do feel it’s time D & D bowed to pressure and removed Ros from the show, there’s going to be little screen time for her next season.

• So forget who they’re casting for Tormund Giantsbane, the real question is how will they cast his member without letting down fans? Or Tormund himself, for that matter.

• paylor,

so you would recast Theon?
because you cant expect an actor to wait 2 or 3 years until he comes back.
On the other hand a different actor may make the evil Ramsay did to Thron that more horriable.

• Michael Tschuertz,

That would be acceptable. But IMHO he got himself in the place is currently is in the books. It is all on him, no one else. He picked the wrong side and he has to live with the consequences.

Now I am drooling over the idea of future casting news! When will we see who acts as the Blackfish? The Reeds? Man, this next year is going to be exciting! O.O

• Hexonx,

Maybe pull out all the stops was the wrong term, I understand the show isn’t going to shell out big bucks for the smaller parts, but I can always hope Redgrave would be willing to play the smallish part for a modest fee. Unlikely, I know

• This is great. We finally have the complete picture. Jaime’s story would not have worked without the Tully’s. Bran’s would not have worked with the Reeds. But the single most important casting for me is Shereen. Without her we have no prelude to what Greyscale is. And Greyscale will be important soon.

• The Kingslayer,

Actually, EW just updated its article with two additions:

KYLE: Ros’ older brother, looking for his sister.
LYANNE: Ros’ friend from Winterfell, she appears in the capital fleeding from the war.

• The Reeds! The Reeds! The Reeds!!! So glad to hear they’re not being totally cut.

Happy to see all the others as well!

• I do wonder how they’re going to handle introducing Selyse and Shireen into the story after they sort of went out of their way in Episode 2 to write both of them out as actual characters, but I’m glad they’ve been cast. Maybe while Stannis was gone at the Blackwater, Selyse and Mel got to be BFFs and she gained back some of her energy or something, so she’s more like her book self. Or maybe they’ll just retcon that dialogue altogether.

• On a serious note, I believe Ros’ role in the next season will be set-up in Sunday’s episode.

I hope they keep her around. I still believe they can find other ways of incorporating her into the story.

• J,

Selyse was in episode 1. Remember Stannis forgetting her at the burning of the seven?
About Shireen, Melisandre said no “sons” so might not be difficult to explain her presence.

• Excited by the Tullys being in, underwhelmed by the Reeds, but whatever.

I have a sneaky suspicion we will see a shock reveal of Ramsay Bolton in the season finale and that it will be someone relatively well known.

• Good to see the Blackfish made it in, if after a lot of the ‘important stuff’ has already happened.

I guess the main things are the pre-RW stuff and the AFFC siege of Riverrun.

Also glad to see that the Reeds made it too, despite the unlikeliness.

• Queen of Thorns! and the Reeds! Blackfish!! Love it♥!!

I hope Stannis’ wife has the appropriate mustache and Shireen will have a touch of the Grey Scale.

• Michael Tschuertz,

If there is one thing I know, you can make a contract for anything. Storytelling wise, it would probably be best to keep him on ice for two seasons, HBO lawyers and Allen’s can work out the semantics. Because whatever you say you can’t convince me two years of torture porn is interesting or necessary storytelling. They’ll have to completely change Theon’s story otherwise, and I’m sorry, his story works in the books.

• Thx for remembering me, HMR! It’s been so long that I can’t even log in with Twitter like in the old days. This is… I have no words! I’ll have to come back tomorrow because right now I’m out of myself… in a good way!

• Excited to see Thoros too. No idea why but always pictured him as a slightly more violent Dalai Lama. Wonder if he’s available? ;-)

• The only thing I’m not excited about is, by the way Varys was talking to Ros, looks like she will be back as well. Working as a double agent for Varys. How original and well thought out…

• Hi-Fi: The Kingslayer, Actually, EW just updated its article with two additions:KYLE: Ros’ older brother, looking for his sister.LYANNE: Ros’ friend from Winterfell, she appears in the capital fleeding from the war.

Finally, Kyle and Lyanne, they’re not left out, woo-hoo!

• andrea,

I probably should have worded my post a bit differently. I meant more “wrote them off as characters who had an actual role to play”. I know Selyse was in Episode 1, but then in Episode 2, Mel talks about how she’s sickly and spends all her time in a tower (or something). If they decide to use her after all, I hope she retains some of her book personality.

As for Shireen, it kind of bothers me that they had Stannis go with the “I’ll give you a (bastard) son!” motivation if she still exists (because I feel like it’s a bit OOC from what we see re: Stannis’s feelings about Shireen in the books), but I’ll get over it.

• paylor: Michael Tschuertz, If there is one thing I know, you can make a contract for anything. I disagree, there is more content in the THEON/RAMSAY arc then there is in everything the Robb did this season…

• Patchface!

Typical to House Gatewatch, now that we have what we want, i.e. The Blackfish, et. al., we want more!

He is described by towerofthehand.com as “A fool … soft and obese and less than a half-wit.” — Perhaps a quarter-wit. :-/

Thus:

Dear GRRM, D&D, and Nina Gold:

On behalf of the voracious House Gatewatch, we hereby demand the inclusion of the much loved, albeit tangential, character known as Patchface. Further, we demand that the actor cast to play him be none other than the foolish, soft, obese half-wit known as Zach Galifianakis.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

Very truly yours,

Mike Chair,
House Gatewatch.

• J,

don´t worry, I always lose something in translation.

J: I hope she retains some of her book personality.

Sure, I know what you mean.

J: Stannis’s feelings about Shireen

maybe one thing will not affect the other: You know, kings and sons… inheritance, hard to say no, blah, blah.

• I’m starting to have the feeling the bastard of Bolton not being anounced for season 3 could mean he’s in the finale of season2

• I don’t know why we need Jojen, he is not necessary, and the gold could be better spent elsewhere.
I would rather have one character done well, than two filmed with bare bones budget and fewer lines.

• Indu,

Well, while Ramsay Snow is not in this list, there have been rumors of casting calls for someone that sounds a lot like Ramsay (fierce and weird looking), plus they’ve already mentioned him in the show, so we can be fairly certain they’re not going to cut him out or something.

• andrea:
J,
maybe one thing will not affect the other: You know, kings andsons… inheritance, hard to say no, blah, blah.

I mean, I know Stannis is a hypocrite and all, but it would be a little rich for him to pass off an illegitimate son as an heir while going on about Joffrey’s illegitimacy.

That said, obviously the son was not actually a son, but it was still apparently enough motivation to go through with it.

• I hope the two Berics look more similar than the two Gregors. I know how unrealistic it is to keep the continuity with so many actors, but I’ll admit it does bother me. Nothing could be worse than the two different Biters and Rorges.

• I’m late to the conversation, but I just want to say how happy I am to have Meera AND Jojen Reed, Edmure, and Brynden cast.

I’m not really a Queen of Thorns fan, but aside from the actresses suggested, I was thinking the creepy old lady who played Eloise Hawking from Lost would be a good choice. The actress is Fionnula Flanagan.

I can’t wait to meet Mance Rayder, Thoros, and the new Beric.

All ’round good news.

• Woohoo. It hints a lot of things.

1. Edmure + Roslin and an even more epic appearance of the Rains of Castamere.
2.We’ll get the Tully storyline from aCoK in Season 3.
3. I think we’ll have the Purple Wedding. But Oberyn, the Trial of Tyrion, and Tywin at the privy won’t happen till late s4.

• After thinking on it, having another practically full complement of players for season 3 also gives strong evidence to two things I think/hope are true:

1) D&D do strongly respect the source material and value characters for what they bring to the story, not to the plot. They are not interested in making this simple nor easy. They are not changing things to change things. So many characters here could have been cut.

But more interestingly:

2) I think this is also evidence that they are confident that they will get long past Book 3. Some of the characters are relevant only for what they introduce in terms of the long game, or aren’t even really all that relevant until the future. Do they take this much care if they aren’t reasonably confident they are getting to Dance? I’m not sure — see item #1 — but maybe not.

• I AM LATE AS ALL HELL BUT I MIGHT AS WELL SAY IT:

WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY REED SIBILINGS?!?!

RIGHT HERE!!!

(bust into tears of joy)

• DavidBC: I disagree, there is more content in the THEON/RAMSAY arc then there is in everything the Robb did this season…

And it would be absolutely no problem to show an important character only a few times. Jaime was in how many episodes this season? Three? So even the big names can be part of a season they have no big story arc in.

• All great news. But what warmed my heart the most is that Shireen is in.
Yeah, so far she hasn’t been critical to the overall story, but to me she is such a sad and melancholy figure and one that elicits the most sympathy.

• I come late to the party, but all I’ll say is “Life is beautiful and full of joy!!!”

• I want Tony Curran on the show. As Edmure or Beric or other it doesn’t matter.
Perfect Doctor Who Actors are perfect.

• Crannogman,

Yes yes and yes. Thank you for joining with me, I have been suggesting Siann Phillips for Queen of Thorns for ages on this site. Who better to play the Queen of Thorns than Livia, Queen of Heaven?

Gillian Anderson for Selyse. Anderson is a beautiful woman but she can look plain if she wants to. Plus Dillane and Anderson would be awesome. And before someone says “wait she is an American”, well given her recent roles, habitation and affectations someone better tell her that!

Also where is Arthur? Meera Reed is going to be in this, I thought he would have peed his drawers over this article?

• Any idea who’s going to play the Blackfish? I’ve seen wild variations in the way he’s been depicted; from a Daniel Day-Lewis sort of look (obviously, they’re not going to get DDL for the role. I’m referring to appearance), to someone resembling the guy who plays the Greatjon (only smaller).

I’m not very good with this sort of thing, but I’m looking forward to everyone’s ideas (no doubt, some have been posted already, but I’m too lazy to go through all 330 posts). I doubt his role will be all that big, given the fact much of it has already been cut out, but they might expand it a bit for the new seasons. In any case, it’s probably not going to be a huge role, but I’m sure the casting department will find someone who will exceed all expectations, as usual.

I’m bummed that GoT S2 is already over, but at least we have casting & filming to look forward to (and of course, TWoW at some point, and a new Dunk & Egg in the meantime). It went by so fast. Great season though. Even better than the first (which isn’t to take away from Sean Bean, because he set the story up perfectly).

• Can we PLEASE get Ciaran Hinds in here! I don’t care what role he plays. I’d prefer him as Mance or Blackfish, but hell, he can play Meera for all I care, as long as he’s on board!

• From Chaos:
This is turning into my favorite GOT week so far! Amazing news!

What he said. TULLYS. (reeds). Tormund. Thoros. QUEEN. OF. THORNS. Fuck yes.

• Lex:
Can we PLEASE get Ciaran Hinds in here! I don’t care what role he plays. I’d prefer him as Mance or Blackfish, but hell, he can play Meera for all I care, as long as he’s on board!

Hey, I could see him as The Blackfish. I kind of like that casting.

• Excited about the Reeds. Missed them this season but haven’t openly protested. Still, I had resigned myself to Osha taking Hodor & Bran & Luwin taking Rickon. Sadly, this casting news doesn’t bode well for certain characters living beyond Sunday night.

• “Daario Nahalis- A confident and seductive warior”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• J: I mean, I know Stannis is a hypocrite and all, but it would be a little rich for him to pass off an illegitimate son as an heir while going on about Joffrey’s illegitimacy.

But Joffrey was not ROBERTs son… he’s Jamie’s. Its not an illegitimate son, its an incestuous abomination. In his mind, what Cersei did was unforgivable. Making a true bastard legitimate is not THAT issue.

• … Also, and this may come off as cruel, but it’s not my intention (as I have a soft spot for Theon): showing Theon’s scenes under the Dreadfort may offer a brief moment of catharsis to a lot of viewers. They could, on the other hand, backfire and gross out other viewers. It’s a tricky decision, that’s for sure. I’m really curious to see how they’ll go about this.

Delaying the Ramsay Snow/Bolton entrance is actually good for all you Alfie fans, and can be very workable. The whole Reek encounter can be stretched out considerably. We have not yet heard mention of Lady Hornwood’s predicament, could turn some back story into front story. There’s a lot that can happen here, without writing Theon out of the show or getting too gory with the off-line encounters in the Dreadfort.

• I first saw game of thrones season 1 without reading any of the books. Luckily I was only spoiled once, Visery’s death. Since then I’ve read all the books to avoid being spoiled again. However, this didn’t completely work as I got indirectly spoiled whenever people mentioned the RW(without the abbreviations). after a certain part of a Storm of Swords I new what the RW stood for and i lost some of the shock value of that scene. Just by hearing the name I was spoiled so I think D&D should be wary and not name episode 9 of season 3 “the RW”. I would go for something more subtle like “Send my regards” or “Castamere”

• funk,

No, it’s not, it’s 64 minutes. People are saying an extra “ten minutes” so that’s being misinterpreted as 70 mins, but other episodes were only 54 minutes long. So this is ten extra minutes, at 64.

• Michael Tschuertz:
axia777,

the wrong side? his family?
But see that is what is great about the books…

And yes me too.

Well at that point his family, Greyjoys, were not really his family anymore. The Starks were since he was with them from what? 5? 6? His father was also a hard nosed bastard that obviously did not give a shit about his last son as he gave him to the enemy. Ned would have killed fools who tried to take Robb, Bran, or Rickon. Nuff said. Theon chose the wrong side. The Greyjoys are all going to die horribly.

• First time poster here. This, along with the Vargo Hoat announcement and last week’s tease of Jaime & Brienne have me simply giddy. I don’t think Ramsay is going to get much screen time for a couple of seasons, so they’ll probably do what they’re doing with The Lightning Lord and put an uncredited actor in the role and recast him when his more meaty parts are coming up.

• Julian Walker:
I AM LATE AS ALL HELL BUT I MIGHT AS WELL SAY IT:

WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY REED SIBILINGS?!?!

RIGHT HERE!!!

(bust into tears of joy)

++++++ :D

• Kaya Scoldelario would be a great Meera Reed. i always pictured her as Meera since amok’s potrait looks like her. but it would suck if she isn’t free.
Asa butterfield as jojen reed. he has the solem wise look.
Ciaran Hinds would be awesome as blackfish. michelle fairley is irish. they are both from northern ireland so the accent would work.
Mads Mikkelsen as Mance Raydar.
Hrithik Roshan as Daario Naharis. he is an indian actor but looks arabic white mixed. i could see Dany getting giddy by seeing him.
i want Imelda Staunton as the queen of thorns.
David Wenham as Beric Dondarrion . He played Faramir in Lord of the Rings.

• Lyonel the Red:
Woohoo. It hints a lot of things.

1. Edmure + Roslin and an even more epic appearance of the Rains of Castamere.
2.We’ll get the Tully storyline from aCoK in Season 3.
3. I think we’ll have the Purple Wedding. But Oberyn, the Trial of Tyrion, and Tywin at the privy won’t happen till late s4.

they are not having the purple wedding in season 3 and then have Tyrion in a cell for 9 episodes of season 4. Episode 10 of season 3 will end with Arya killing Polliver and traveling to Bravos

• wow. if only they could have spoken up a year ago, it would have saved us lots of crying! Or who knows, maybe our constant crying made them decide to include?? Maybe the fan’s cries helped them decide who was important per the fans?

• Glad to see some awesome guys being brought to life. Im looking forward to the Cersei, Sansa, Margery triangle but now they are throwing in her grandma this should look even better! Also, im happy they seem to be including alot of the new faces instead of taking a more cost effective route, especially with the Reeds. Im really looking forward to seeing if we get some Martells this season since Gregor vs Obyren was awesome. Also, although I’m not exactly “looking forward to” the Red Wedding, seeing it and losing hope all over again should be very exciting and the non-bookies’ reactions will be another highlight Oh nd btw has anyone else been singing/humming the Rains of Castamere? So catchy! I’m just wondering if there is a Stark song that could be similar…..

• With the increased cast in season 4 expect a lot of deaths this Sunday.

My predictions!

Dagmer, Luwin, Black Lorren bite the dust at the hand of the Dreadfort. Ros is hanged by Lord Tywin. Doreah and Kovarro get killed by Pyat Pree. Pyat Pree dies by dragonfire. Quorin Halfhand gets killed by Jon and Ghost. Pycelle gets merked by Bronn after trying to finish off Tyrion.

• When are they gonna cast the role of Dave Baratheon? Patrick Stewart would be perfect for the role.

Looking forward to seeing the Queen of Thorns portrayed. She always struck me as a really interesting character.

I wonder how they’re going to introduce the rest of Catelyn’s family. I hope they don’t seem like a strange addition to the non-book readers, since they haven’t really been mentioned before.

When does Randyll Tarly appear in the books by the way?

• Is there any chance that Maggie Smith would be willing to play Olenna Tyrell, the Queen of Thorns? I always picture her when I am reading. If you have seen Downton Abbey, you will know what I mean.

• I knew Mance was coming, but it’s s nice surprise to know that the Blackfish is in officially. I also can’t wait to see the direction they head with Beric.

Seriously, Arthur might have had a heart attack over this news!

• Turncloak,

OK, just for shits and giggles, why would Tywin hang Ros? For being Tyrion’s whore? But Tywin saw Shae at the Green Fork and knows who’s who.

• Yellow Dog:
Turncloak,

OK, just for shits and giggles, why would Tywin hang Ros? For being Tyrion’s whore? But Tywin saw Shae at the Green Fork and knows who’s who.

Yes just for being a whore which Tysin dislikes. At least publicly.

• My dream casting for the above list:
– Mance Rayder: Mads Mikkelsen
– Daario Naharis: Goran Visnjic
– Jojen Reed; Asa Butterfield
— Meera Reed: Anna Popplewell (may be too old now, but she can play younger)
— Lady Selyse Florent: Haydn Gwynne
– Edmure Tully: Kristofer Hivju/ Tony Curran
– Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Gerard Butler/ Dougray Scott
– Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Dame Maggie Smith
– Beric Dondarrion: David Wenhem/ Tony Curran
– Thoros of Myr: David Morrissey
– Tormund Giantsbane: Ron Perlman/ Ray Stevenson

I love that QoT and Blackfish made it even if they are relatively minor roles they are a lot of fun!

• purplejilly,

I heard rumors months ago they were including the Reeds for sure. I don’t think the fan whining carries weight with D&D, to be honest. They have the show’s course plotted out, and can’t cater to our individual wishes.

• Ok, so here’s my semi-realistic wishlist for the roles we know we’re getting now:
Olenna Tyrell: Maggie Smith/Sian Phillips
Edmure Tully: Kevin McKidd, see also: Dondarrion, Beric. Either role for him. whatever gets him the most screen time.
Balckfish: Ciaran hinds maybe? He’s a powerhouse actor, and I would love to see him on the show, lake of trademark Tully-auburn hair notwithstanding
Meera: Sarah Bolger all the way on this one
Jojen: Not sure on this one. someone younger than Bolger, and the casting department has done an excellent job thus far. If anything, clone Issac and be done with it. :^)
Giantsbabe (tee hee hee): Maybe Ray Stevenson? Brendan Gleeson if they’re going older.
Mance Rayder: James Frain or John Hawkes. I have never read Mance as the rough and tumble Purefoy type, so I like these two. Also, Hawekes is in a band, so Mance’s musical talents could be included.
Daario: They can go any which way with this role for me as the character isn’t so much defined by a look (depsite having a distinct appearance) so much as attitude. He should be walking sex.
Thoros, Selyse and Shireen Not concerned with these roles, and don’t have any suggestions.
And, not listed above, but if they cast Val I’d love to see Rosamund Pike in the role.

• robb17,

We share a lot of the same ideal castings….. So I’m sure we are both wrong! XD

I love Ian McShane in just about anything, but I cannot see the right role for him in ASOIF honestly…. I always pictured Blackfish a bit younger than McShane’s 70 years, but he would be fun!

• This is good news, and I suppose it’s doable with A Storm of Swords broken into two seasons. I’m not sure how organic it’ll all feel, but it’s one way to make the story feel fuller for season 3, while little of what we remember from A Storm of Swords is likely to happen before season 4.

I just have one request of D&D, for season 4. Assuming they wait until then to introduce Oberyn, I hope they also introduce Quentyn at the same time, maybe just as a contrast. I really felt he was introduced too late to the party in the books, considering events in Mereen. This could help connect some cliques and conspiracies to Essos again in the minds of the viewers.

• Jill,

Rosamund Pike for Val is perfect. I would also vote Anna Torv but she still has a season of Fringe left. Imogen Poots from Centurion would be good, or Sarah from Chuck.

Glad to see your a Siann fan as well. I swear to God I am going to be that Paul guy and get Siann for that role! I would also be open to Vanessa Redgrave. But I doubt we would get her. Francesca Annis would be good too if they cast her a little younger.

John Hawkes as Mance is inspired! I wonder how good his British accent is.

And since they are casting Selyse, I wager to give some story to Stannis by having him bickering with his Queen (Davos, Me, Stannis, Selyse what a crowd!) I am pushing for Gillian Anderson. Just give her some peachfuzz on her upper lip.

• So, Daario…

TBH though we had rumors he was being cast for awhile, I’m not really sure I get why he’s being cast for S3.

D&D have hinted that Dany’s story in S3 will end with the sacking of Astapor/stealing the Unsullied. Does this mean they are moving Daario to Astapor? To me… this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense unless they are changing his origin/role entirely. Where would a sellsword captain fit in? Or maybe I’m wrong and Dracarys will not be her finale in Season 3. *shrug*

• Jill,

I would love for Gleeson or Hinds to be cast in Thrones!
I see both more in the Mace Tyrell role, but they could be worked in elsewhere….

Sian Phillips as QoT would be awesome indeed. I fear Smith is too wry and haughty for Thrones…. even if those traits make her perfect for the role! XD

I love John Hawkes! One of the more underrated actors out there.
He would be fun as Vargo Hoat, but I doubt he will be cast at all since he’s American.

• I hate to be a wet blanket but I’m curious how they’re going to insert the Reed twins.

Bran and co. are on there way to where ever and they just happen to run into the Reeds, the son and daughter of a Lord mind you, just wandering through the North.

• Chrysee:
Judi Dench cameos as the Queen of Thorns or I quit :(

That’s who I suggested, she even has Margery’s nose! They look like family for sure.

• Hmm… Now that I think about it I kinda like the idea of Vincent Cassel as Vargo Hoat.

• darquemode,

Yes Vincent Cassel would be awesome as Hoat. Plus being non-English he could get away with the lisp unlike other actors. At first he could be seen as a flamboyant fool that no one takes seriously re: his Duke of Anjou in Elizabeth and all of sudden go all Irreversible with a fire hydrant on someone’s skull.

• Sian Phillips would be fabulous , but there has to be a scad of older actresses available that could make the QoT delicious. Dench would also be wonderful , but maybe too prominent at the moment ? ..I never watched Lost ,but I know Fionnula Flanagan is a very fine actress..
But I mean , look how we all fell in love with the dear departed Old Nan…I have confidence they’ll be able to come up with someone who’ll knock our socks off.

ETA : SO happy for Blackfish Blues..:D

• John W:
I hate to be a wet blanket but I’m curious how they’re going to insert the Reed twins.

It’s all about them green dreams. Very convenient plot device.

• LordDavos12,

He actually did reply to the news but was very muted as he was downcast on the fact that Ros is in the next episode.

He must really hate her to not orgasm all over this post. Poor guy. I resigned myself to Ros last season. She’s not going anywhere.

• Joshua Taylor,

While I am a huge fan of the John Hawkes idea, my intial hope was Frain. Someone else, don’t remember who, but someone from this site mentioned Hawkes in response to my explanation of the Frain suggestion (both incredibly talented actors who can blend in or stand out as needed, which to me is key to Mance) and he completely fit in with my sense of Mance. So to be fair, while it is an inspired casting, the credit belongs to another poster. Either way I would be happy dancing like Patchface if either were to be cast.

• timpostor,

Gallo is seriously creepy looking!

Everytime I see him I expect him to say “Warriors….. come out to plaaaaay!”
Don’t ask me why. XD

• they’ve already shown beric on the show. I wonder if they’ll recast him or use the same guy

• John W,

I think it will be relatively easy to get them together. Maybe Meera/Jojen were on their way to Winterfell but arrived too late, instead meeting up with Bran in the forest. Or maybe Jojen’s greensight guides them.

In any event, I just hope they recite their pledge. It may be even more poignant in the show, as Bran will hear it after he’s been betrayed and had nearly everything taken from him. We swear it by ice and fire!

The inclusion of the Reeds is a monstrously good decision.

• John W: to Astapor? To me… this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense

Jojen will have a green dream that tells him where to go.. easy

• Jojen will have a green dream that tells him where to go.. easy
freoduwebbe

teach me to not watch for my highlights

Jojen will have a green dream telling him where to go to meet up with Bran. In essence thats what happened in the book – only then it was to go to Winterfel.

• Joshua Taylor,

She has moved away but not too far…

In her most recent role in the series Hit & Miss she plays a trasgender (M2F) hitwoman and has a full frontal scene with prosthetic manbits on display. XD

She certainly is a fearless actress isn’t she?

• Awesome news! Just so great! I am most excited about the Reeds and the Blackfish! I think splitting book 3 into 2 seasons is such a great idea and allows for stuff like this!

• I’m hoping Dominic West gets in the mix. Great character actor. Would be a decent Mance as well.

• I don’t know why anyone would worry about changes to any element of the plot that involves Daario, thats one area I would be pleading, begging the showrunners to make changes to.

• stanvosftw:
So, Daario…

When have D&D hinted this. Where is ur proof?

• The only reason I give a damn about the Reeds is because of Howland. All Meera and Jojen are good for is telling the story about the knight of the laughing tree. Osha could have easily taken Jojen’s place. I feel like Bran’s story is going to be the most difficult for non-readers to follow. Not only is it very fantastical, but it is also fairly boring at times.

• Joshua Taylor,

My cousin is actually friends with John Hawkes (he’d kill me for name dropping like that, but oh well), and I can say with near certainty that he won’t be available for GoT (as cool as that would be).

He’ll be in Lincoln with Daniel Day-Lewis, though. So look forward to that.

• The best part of this news was the rallying behind Blackfish Blues, and the way the comment thread (though a million times bigger) felt like the old days all over again. This is the kind of fandom I love to be a part of.

BLACKFISH!

• I just read this now after a long day of work and all I can say is AWESOME!!!! Ser Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr. The Brotherhood!!! The Blackfish! Meera and Jojen! Seven Hells Yes! the others…eh I figured they would be introduced at some point. How could they not haha. I am super amped about the next two seasons….as if I wouldn’t be. Great news for the end of the day.

• Great news indeed. That certainly can’t be a complete list. I’ll keep pushing for Strong Belwas and Vargo Hoat. I expect some people are correct in thinking that maybe some Dorne characters get pushed back to Season 4, just to keep things manageable for the viewers.

However excited you are, please remember to use spoiler tags. I just read through several hundred posts and a significant percentage didn’t have stuff blocked which should have been.

P.S. The dimimutive 5’2″ Fionnula Flanagan for The Queen of Thorns!

• You know one of the great things about the TV show is there are so many characters. So much going on. Such a broad spectrum to pick a favorite character and watch that character’s development.

You know the bad thing about this show, is there are just so many characters… Lol

• I say bring Jason Momoa back as Daario.
He wants to come back on the show.
Dye his hair, no braid, shave his beard and mustache, dress him like a mercenary.
He’ll look different enough to pass as a different character and close enough to explain why Dany likes him.

• All we need to know now is to know who’s gonna play everyone’s favorite family. The Frey’s YAY

• John W:
I hate to be a wet blanket but I’m curious how they’re going to insert the Reed twins.

Bran and co. are on there way to where ever and they just happen to run into the Reeds, the son and daughter of a Lord mind you, just wandering through the North.

Hmm, well, the Reeds were sent to Winterfell to find Bran (and Rickon). So, umm, when they get there later than they do in the book (perhaps the TV Reeds are just slow, or stopped for a bite on the way), they see Winterfell burned down (Jojen: I knew it!) and track the children north, eventually catching up with them, because you know, Bran has to be carried.

That’s one of many completely plausible ideas. Another, as someone mentioned, is green dreams.

It’s really not that hard to solve these things if you think about it. Aside from death, there aren’t many plot variances where you can’t get back to the story easily. We saw it all season.

• Prince of Winterfell,

There was an interview quite awhile ago where they say that there are two big events which are their favorites in the entire series and that both will occur in Season 3. The hints they gave indicated that these events were tRW and Dracarys. I’d have to look it up by googling same as you.

The rest is speculation – given that they are aiming Season 3 to center around these two events, I assume that they intend to end the series with them. And to me it makes the most sense that if they are going to do tRW, it can’t be the season finale. Dracarys makes much more sense as a final event – a badass/awesome moment to make up for the horrible one earlier. Plus, they line up chronologically.

In any case it’s the most logical stopping point for her. I don’t think there’s another good place to end Dany’s story until she takes Meereen, and if they do that in Season 3, then there’s nothing left for S4.

I don’t know why anyone would worry about changes to any element of the plot that involves Daario, thats one area I would be pleading, begging the showrunners to make changes to.

Lol if you hate him that much, you should want him to be pushed back to Season 4… :)

I think he’ll be a different character than in the books, in that he won’t be such a clown and will be much more relatable as a result. He’ll be sort of like Jaime, or a really hot Bronn, or something. What I’m confused about is how introducing him before Astapor will actually work. Dany should NEED those unsullied – why steal them if she already has a sell-sword captain and his crew behind her? Which makes me think that he won’t be a sellsword captain in the series.

• Varamyr Fourskins,

That is awesome. Tell him he deserves to be part of such a great film. I have loved John Hawkes since he played the tormented writer Padgett in the X Files masterpiece ‘Milagro’. Also Saul Starr was a great character on Deadwood.

• Maria Batsiou:
The Reeds are in, so my whining is over!

Good one Maria! Asa Butterfield would be an awesome Jojen IMO too! What about his “Nanny McPhee” sister Lil Woods as Meera? Too young? They really look like sibs…
http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/UVElXaAtOGy/Nanny+McPhee+Bang+World+Film+Premiere+Outside/JdSR5iGafzA/Lil+Woods

• Tyrion Pimpslap:
The only reason I give a damn about the Reeds is because of Howland. All Meera and Jojen are good for is telling the story about the knight of the laughing tree. Osha could have easily taken Jojen’s place. I feel like Bran’s story is going to be the most difficult for non-readers to follow. Not only is it very fantastical, but it is also fairly boring at times.

Bran just isn’t going to be on screen a lot pretty much ever again. It’s actually really good the Reeds are in because over TWO seasons Bran has:

– A reintro scene, maybe, they split up and head out
– A couple of scenes about Summer, max
– The scene at Queenscrown (?) where Summer helps out Jon
– The Liddles and Norrys, if you are stretching it
– Maybe two scenes for the Castle, Sam and Coldhands

I’m digging deep here and that’s like seven scenes, most of which have no action. That’s like Jaime this season, EXCEPT it’d be over two seasons. And you can’t move Dance up — because there will be nothing there then.

So adding in the Reeds, which add at least three scenes incremental Intro/pledge, green dreams and frog stabbin’, and the Knight of the Laughing tree at least gets us to a Bran scene every other episode. Still might have to make something up, but much better.

• Winter,

You should publish an article about the fact that S02E10 has been extended to 70mins!!!!

• Gecc1:
I say bring Jason Momoa back as Daario.
He wants to come back on the show.
Dye his hair, no braid, shave his beard and mustache, dress him like a mercenary.
He’ll look different enough to pass as a different character and close enough to explain why Dany likes him.

Casting like this or — as much as I like him — Nathan Fillion as Butterbumps just confuse me. Do people really want to the show to do something goofy?

I do think they will change Daario, and I think there’s pretty good book justification to do so. I think the perception of Daario even being that sexy is a result of Dany’s POV — not a collective view. Frankly, the preening and such would annoy most women over the age of 25, which Dany, is of course, not.

I’d like it if they actually made him less of an ass, just simply so I don’t have to watch him. And no naked women on the daggers.

• Ramsay is coming:
Winter,

You should publish an article about the fact that S02E10 has been extended to 70mins!!!!

It’s really only 64 minutes runtime, according to the HBO schedule. Every episode has several minutes of review of the previous week and a short preview of the episode. It’s still 10 minutes longer, but the usual episode runtime is only about 54 minutes.

• Who needs Mace Tyrell? He can be played off-stage. Now, Lady Olenna, that’s the Tyrell we were looking for!

If Jojen and Meera are finally in, maybe those flashbacks from AGOT with Howland Reed and Ned Stark could show up sometime. Might shed some light for Jon Snow, considering where they went together.

The Blackfish was always one of my favorite minor characters, and it was bugging the hell out of me how they could cut him out after GRRM so significantly got him out of Riverrun in AFFC. Good to see they finally cut him in; I’m really looking forward to see how he’s cast. Gay, yes, that was suggested, but he ain’t no lady.

• RitariKnight,

That is what I have been thinking all the time… I think they have slow played it and hid it, I think they may have gotten a high profile actor to commit to playing him, and that would excite everyone when we see him. Cillian Murphy would be a good guess, he lives in Ireland and would be an insane casting choice to play the most evil person on westeros.

• For any of you noobs that forgot the Reeds pledge to Bran… Here y’all go.

“To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater,” they said together. “Hearth and heart and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Grant mercy to our weak, help to our helpless, and justice to all, and we shall never fail you.”
“I swear it by earth and water,” said the boy in green.
“I swear it by bronze and iron,” his sister said.
“We swear it by ice and fire,” they finished together.

Now that’s a fucking pledge…

If D&D put the pledge as a scene… Chills will go down my spin watching it. Really hope we get to see their pledge to Bran on TV.

• This list just makes me kinda…I mean, if it wasn’t from EW, I wouldn’t believe it whatsoever. It sounds almost like fan service. So many of these characters have roles that could easily be taken up by other characters, or are generally unnecessary. As much as I love the Reeds, they could have fucked around with Osha’s character and made her take up their mantle. And both of them — why both? And the Blackfish? Why does Margaery need a scheming grandmother if she herself is scheming in the show?

Someone share their insights with me.

But, I suppose they’re in — not doubting that, obviously. My only theory — and this theory seems to be shared by many of you, as I can see — is that these people are all important in the end-game, and need to be cast now. Interesting, how this may bode for the books.

• Of course, I don’t mean to bitch, or anything — this is great news. Weird news, but great news. Like finding out your fixed dog has just given birth to a litter of adorable puppies. Or Tullys.

• Arthur:

Aw man, this woman would cry her eyes out to see that beautiful scene! Make it so!

• John W:

Bran and co. are on there way to where ever and they just happen to run into the Reeds, the son and daughter of a Lord mind you, just wandering through the North.

I would guess a green dream.

• Tried thinking of past Nina Gold projects and some she has already hit for talent…. She does like using actors in multiple projects she has done…..
Projects of hers they worked together on in parentheses.

Gordon Kennedy (Robin Hood series) as Tormund Giantsbane…
http://image.com.com/tv/images/processed/super/c0/ab/286048.jpg

Rufus Sewell (from John Adams) or Dominic West (the Devil’s Whore) as Mance Rayder?

Sean Harris (Red Riding) or Tobias Menzies (Rome) as Vargo Hoat?

Anna Popplewell (Narnia trilogy and Daniel Deronda)) or Georgie Henley (Narnia trilogy) as Meera Reed?

Tom Goodman-Hill (The Devils’ Whore) as Edmure or Beric perhaps?

Hedwyn Gwynne (Rome) or Maxine Peak (The Devil’s Whore) as Lady Selyse?

Robert Portal (The King’s Speech and Iron Lady) as Thoros of Myr?

• Joshua Taylor,

I’m here man. Very happy of course. I kind of knew the Reeds would be in season 3. (unless GRRM told D&D they were not important)… I put their pledge as my desktop background….

“To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater,” they said together. “Hearth and heart and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Grant mercy to our weak, help to our helpless, and justice to all, and we shall never fail you.”

“I swear it by bronze and iron,” his sister said.
“We swear it by ice and fire,” they finished together.

—Said the Reeds to Bran Stark…

• Joshua Taylor,

I mentioned a while back how the introduction of Mance Rayder in the books reminded me of that scene in Elizabeth when the Duc D’Anjou reveals himself. Ever since then I couldn’t stop picturing a Vincent Cassel type as Mance Rayder.

Someone suggested Gudmundur Thorvaldsson for Mance Rayder and I have to agree on this one.

• darquemode,

She also cast Sean Harris in “Brothers of the Head” and “Prometheus”.

He’s an amazing actor so I just hope he ends up in some GoT role.

• So when does everyone think we’ll start hearing casting announcements? Next month? July? Oh, that’d be a fabulous birthday present for me. :)

• Carne,

Ah, good catch!
I did not really cross check every project of hers…
I’m sure I missed a few other projects the actors I listed worked on. I started getting a headache and my brain wants me to stop thinking… As if!

• I really would not count out some headline names joining this series, because just like Harry Potter , great actors want to be involved in great projects, and if they can nab some headliners, they can condense their work volume into short work periods, I think we will see some real heavy hitters soon taking great roles. It’s easily the best show on tv and the best actors want the best roles, even if they are not making much more than scale. It still pays more than theater.

• I agree with whoever said that Jason Mamoa should play Daario, he deserves it, because he hated being killed off that show and it would feel serendipitous if they just changed his appearance. I have watched every episode at least 3 times, and how he plays Drogo’s call to war in the tent still gives me chills. It’s fucking awesome. I also love how Jason Momoa said that Khal Drogo would fuck up Conan the Barbarians world.

• This is wonderful news. I’m re-reading ACOK right now and the Reeds are now my biggest miss of Season Two of the TV show.

They could be introduced after the burning of Winterfell when everyone has left; they could find Bran, Rickon, Osha and Hodor sealed in the crypt and help them get out.

I really wish they would expand the show to 12-13 episodes per season just to allow all the locations more time to develop. Season Two has bee great but it has felt rushed at times.

• Gosh, all this casting idea stuff makes me frustrated, so many good choices. And one just hit me… Guy Pearce as Oberyn Martell. Holy crap, he is known for making short presentations….

• RB,

I hope they get the same guy to play Beric even if he is an unknown as it would be great for continuity and I see his face now when reading the books.

• brigs,

And he was in The King’s Speech and Promoetheus so there is a connection to Nina Gold.
Of course Mildred Pierce for HBO would be another connection too.

• What happened to David Michael Scott from season 1. I thought he was playing Beric Dondarrion.

• Theon/Ramsay:

They dont need torture at all or not much. Just the inbetweens.
Ramsay playing mindgames. escape scenes. ramsays first wedding.
For theon inner thoughts give him a cell partner:
Original Reek!
her teaches how to make ramsays happy or how to become another Reek until say Theon is the better Reek at the end of Season 4 and ramsay kills reek and names Theon new Reek?

many things to do. Would give Alfie allen room to shine.

• Stephen,

Well Berric will have died so many times by now, he is so disfigured they can get away with a recast. It was just a split second of screentime, still cool they put it in there in season 1 for continuity.

• A dance with dragons is a amazing book. Yep i said it. You people that don’t like ADWD know nothing. Off topic but people that complain about that are…I can’t explain it. Yes I get daenerys is boring I agree with that atleast.

• Well for those crying for Ciaran Hinds as Doran and Purefoy as Oberyn, go watch John Carter and you get Ciaran as King and Purefoy as his general, lol.

Very happy for the Reeds and all the others that are in. I cannot understand why some people think that the cast is getting too big. We will have 20 episodes for SoS the story will have time to breathe.

Casting sugesstions:
Nathan Fillion: Mance Rayder
Jason Mormoa: Dario Naharis
Judie Dench: Olenna
Ray Stevenson: Tormund
Jeremy Irons: Blackfish ( just for you Blackfish Blues;))

I guess we will even get some scenes of Osha and Rickon on the way to Skagos, now that the Reeds are in:)

• cwolf,

This is good news but I couldn’t really imagine him not being casted, he is an essential part of the story after all

• cwolf,

Good to know! D&D’s liberties notwithstanding, Ramsay is an important character. To write him out of the story would cause a lot of problems later on, I guess.

All in all, these casting news are just great! Especially Olenna will be another strong female character, as will be Meera Reed. And I agree that an earlier introduction of Daario might be a wise choice because it allows them to make the romance more credible.
Well, in Nina Gold we trust – as always. ;)

• cwolf: According to westeros.org Ramsay Snow is in:

“Little birds have told us that Ramsay Snow, Lord Bolton’s bastard, is also being cast”

Good to hear, even as obvious as it seemed.

• Great that the Reeds are in. Looking forward to hearing who’ll play Mance too.James Purefoy from Rome would be ideal.

• ThePinkDragon: So when does everyone think we’ll start hearing casting announcements? Next month? July? Oh, that’d be a fabulous birthday present for me. :)

Probably June, it was last year anyway with Marg Tyrell being the first around the 20th.

I think filming is meant to start a little earlier this year so the casting announcements may start earlier as well.

• excuse me, but I don’t get why all the fuss with Blackfish, in the books I didn’t really pay much attention to him, can someone explain me why all the cheering? :)

• Mmhhh…. many names for the 3rd season, but I think that many of these depend on where the season will divided. It isn’t necessarily the center of the book for each POV.

I think that Game of Thrones needs of:
1) Red Viper
2) Mace Tyrell
3) Strong Belwass
4) Donal Noye and Mag!!

I hope to see:
1) Ben Plumm
2) Stiv, Jarl, Val, Dalla
3) Edric Dayne, Lem and Tom Seven

we will see…

• bloodofmyblood:
excuse me, but I don’t get why all the fuss with Blackfish, in the books I didn’t really pay much attention to him, can someone explain me why all the cheering? :)

Many people simply like the character. He’s strong-willed. Something happened between him and his brother, Hoster, which caused the Blackfish to leave Riverrun (many believe it part of an intimation that he is gay and refused to marry at his Lord brother’s command). Most importantly, he didn’t just sudddenly drop out of sight in the books, never to reappear. Instead GRRM gave him a rather obvious and daring escape which seems ti indicate importance for a later plot.

• Joshua Taylor,

You reminded me of him playing Gilles de Rais in “Joan of Arc”. Given the somewhat disturbing interests of de Rais, that could definitely work.

• The last of the 3 characters I feared cut but that I would love to have on the show, as we’ve been given Dolorous Edd and apparently Blackfish, is now Belwas. I don’t see him listed there but I will stay positive.

• The perfect man for playing Edmure is Max Brown from Tudors. And about Oleanna, yes Maggie Smith…it would be dream come true, Fiona Shaw as Selyse, make it happen, I hated her for her Petunia in Harry Potter, and she would be great as abnoxious Selyse… Cant wait for season 3!!!

• Carne,

Wow. One of my favorite scenes in the whole series is Blackfish confronting a certain Lannister in front of Riverrun. That’s the way to confront Lannisters: call them on their fucking bluff.

There are neither spoiler nor preview tags for some reason.

• If they split the book into two seasons, what will be the S3 finale? Red Wedding alone would be too cruel, Purple Wedding has two come one or two weeks later.
Arya witnessing Beric’s resurrection and being captured by the Hound would work, but is maybe not strong enough. NW’s return to Craster’s Keep and Sam meeting Coldhands could be shuffled around to help in that case.

• Finally! The Reeds!!!

Perhaps the reason Reek is not mentioned is that he has already been cast?! :D

• My suggestion for Theon in Season 3:

He is captured by the Bolton troops led by unseen Ramsay in S2E10. Then, in the beginning of Season 3 a servant named Reek helps him to escape. Together, they head towards the Ironborn troops on the West Coast. On the journey, Theon tells him the truth of Stark kids and some other relevant information. Soon after that, the Bolton troops find them “by chance”, Reek betrays Theon and it is revealed he really is Ramsay. This way, the Boltons will get all the relevant information they got in the books via Ramsay/Reek. (OK, of course Ramsay could have tortured the truths out of Theon but I suppose the Boltons want to do the torture in Dreadfort and it’s a long way from Winterfell, so the planned escape would be faster way – and of course a kind of method of mental torture too…)

• Arthur:
Joshua Taylor,

I’m here man.Very happy of course.I kind of knew the Reeds would be in season 3.(unless GRRM told D&D they were not important)…I put their pledge as my desktop background….

—Said the Reeds to Bran Stark…

Lol sounds very cheesy and campy to put on screen. But then again so was Brienne’s vow to Cat

• The viper will be the end of season 3, they have to much to cover for season 4 to not end season 3 with the end of the third book.
Lannisport,

• Is there gold in the village? Gems? Where is Lord Beric? Where did he go? How many men were with him?

Oh, there he is.

• Ereinion,

Sounds good, but there’s already a lot of actual book material to juggle for the next few seasons. If they feel the need to absolutely feature all the actors each season, then your method is a solid approach. I’m just not sure it’s worth cutting out anything else for.

• James,
And despite any larger, overall issues with the show, she was really good in True Blood last season. I was just rewatching Season 4 and her performance is a standout.

darquemode,

As much as this would be awesome, because Henry Cavill is absolutely gorgeous to look at, I don’t think he could be Daario. I think Daario is supposed to be a lot more wily/smooth than Henry usually plays (he’s generally more stoic/heroic) and he doesn’t have the right look. He’s also going to be way too huge once Superman hits, I wager.

• I’m just happy I’ll never have to read another post about the Reeds not being on the show! WOOO!!

Still confused and Shireen but I’m glad Greyscale will be playing a role! I wonder if Robert’s bastard from Storm’s End(who’s name I’m blanking on) will appear as well?

So excited! Wooo!!

• Man, as perfect as Brian Blessed would be for Tormund, I can’t help but feel he’s probably too old at this point (especially since I assume a great deal of that filming will be in Iceland.)

• Tom of Sevenstreams?

I was hoping for someone like Billy Boyd. Someone who can actually sing.

I also hope they bring in Missandei since they went and killed Irri.

• Joshua Taylor: I have loved John Hawkes since he played the tormented writer Padgett in the X Files masterpiece ‘Milagro’. Also Saul Starr was a great character on Deadwood.

Did you see ‘Winter’s Bone’? Hawkes’ performance in that was a chilling example of how good his range is as an actor.

• fuelpagan,

That’s an interesting choice, but I don’t personally think singing skill is necessary for this role. His singing voice can be dubbed, and he may not even sing all that often. Plus for all we know Julian Richings can sing like an angel.

Acting skill and look are the number one priority, and personally while Boyd is a fine actor, he’s too “cute”.

• fuelpagan,

I assume Lemoncloak and the gang will all be minor characters, they’re not terribly imporant and anyone could play them. The same for the Brave Companions outside of Hoat and Qyburn.

• Maxwell James,

I get the feeling they are going to weave both book 3 & 4 together, merging the timelines – I can’t see them holding an actor out of season 3.

Nonetheless, it’s going to be extremely difficult with all the story lines going on simultaneously – I don’t envy the writers!

• TastesLikeTheSea:
Ratings down 13%, Memorial Day FAIL.

Not just Memorial Day, but an anticipated NBA Game 1 (which got massive ratings – twice as much as the NBA game last weekend) of the Western Conference Finals starting at 830pm EST.

Disappointing.

• Alan,

Yep seeing NBA’s ratings compared to last week i guess the loss is there at least as much as the fact that it was memorial Day.

• Josh Parker: fuelpagan, That’s an interesting choice, but I don’t personally think singing skill is necessary for this role. His singing voice can be dubbed, and he may not even sing all that often. Plus for all we know Julian Richings can sing like an angel.Acting skill and look are the number one priority, and personally while Boyd is a fine actor, he’s too “cute”.

I always pictured Tom as being cute. Between his looks and his voice, women line up for him. While looks are important for many characters, I don’t see why Tom’s looks are all that important. And the only minstral the show had so far I wouldn’t give a single copper to hear him sing. I can usually tell dubbed singing and it annoys me when producers go for looks over someone who actually has the talent to sing. If Julian Richings can sing then by all means sign him up. I just know Billy Boyd can and he is a great actor.

The Rains of Castamere has been introduced to the audience, the meaning behind the song will have to be explained. Arya would be a good fit to ask those questions after hearing the song considering she just left Tywin’s service and wouldn’t be familiar with the song.

I guess Ros could do it while she is banging a Lannister soldier. :p

• Maxwell James,

I think that D&D are going to surprise us on Sunday with Ramsay. Without announcing his casting last year they might have left us in the dark to not expect him. I think it would be a great way to end the season with him taking Winterfell and “killing Theon”

• Blaat: I assume Lemoncloak and the gang will all be minor characters, they’re not terribly imporant and anyone could play them. The same for the Brave Companions outside of Hoat and Qyburn.

I’m not that concerned about Lemoncloak or the other characters in the gang. I just think the character of Tom O’Sevens could be a versital character D&D could expand on. A good spot to put exposition without needing Ros.

• God I really hope Ramsay, Belwas and Arstan show up in the next episode, though I don’t think we have enough time for that.

Still furious they included Daario, though it would be epic if they just killed the annoying fuck at the end of the season so we won’t have to endure all the Dany/Daario shit later on.

Anyway, Blackfish baby!

• robb17,

By the seems of it she looks like she will be busy and therefore unable to do GOT. Plus I don’t think in my opinion she has the right look for Merra

• Alex Also:
Hooray! Hooray! We have a critical mass calling for Brian Blessed for Tormund.

You spelled that wrong. It’s BRIAN BLESSED. And while I adore that man, I think he’s too old for Giantsbane. :(

• ace,

No Osha will still be there until they reach the wall and meeting Sam and Gilly with her child to then travel with coldhands, which is where they will split. So that give them plenty of interaction and possible conflict between two strong women, which would be good to see

• Varamyr Fourskins,

Oh! I didn’t see that! So there are actually people like me that THINK that, if Ramsay was still not introduced, it is maybe because “Reek” is already in the place? Answer next sunday!

• Eleanor,

I had the same fear! I thought they decided to have a more grown-up and schemy Margaery would mean no Queen of Thorns… BUT FINALLY NOT! Which means that the combination of the two characters will be extremelly strong! I am entirely exhilarating…

• BobJ:
All great news. But what warmed my heart the most is that Shireen is in.
Yeah, so far she hasn’t been critical to the overall story, but to me she is such a sad and melancholy figure and one that elicits the most sympathy.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Shireen has a significant role in the last two books, given the way that ADWD appeared to set-up that there was something important about greyscale

• Strongboar,

Unless they have Luwin, you know, not die.. But when I think about it there’s nobody else left at Winterfell who we actually know well enough to care if they died so I guess he will just to give it emotional impact.

• Alex Also,

He was my second thought for the role after Ron Perlman, but I considered Blessed too old too. I have since leaned towards Gordon Kennedy (Littlejohn on Ronib Hood series) and Robert Portal as Tormund Giantsbane. Both have connections to Nina Gold. Although I think Ray Stevenson coukld fil lthe role well and would love him cast in Thrones… maybe as Victarion Greyjoy later…..

Gordon Kennedy:

• Another Daario suggestion to throw into the mix: Oscar Isaac. Maybe not the best picture of him, but I tried to find something that looks remotely Thrones-ish. Here’s more of a head shot. He’s Guatemalan/American, but I hope that’s less of an issue with the Essos characters.

• Lina,

I LOVE Oscar Isaac. I’m a Gosling fanboy all the way, but bad boy Isaac’s presence in Drive gave him a run for his money.

He’d be amazing as Daario. Wow.

That said, he’s been getting a bunch of high profile jobs in films these days (he’s starring in the next Coen bros. movie) so I doubt it’s a possibility.

• Greyjoying:
Madmage,

lol agreed. I was already soooo over the complaints, especially since Bran’s plot this season worked out just fine without them.

I know! It was getting to the point I was hoping they wouldn’t get included out of spite.

• Knurk: we have enough time for that.

Still furious they included Daario, though it would be epic if they just killed the annoying fuck at the end of the season so we won’t have to endure all the Dany/Daario shit later on.

Anyway, Blackfish baby!

I thought they could just replace Daario with a vibrator and we wouldn’t miss out on much from a plot perspective. On the other hand, I suppose it wouldn’t be fair to hetero female fans not to have their version of Ros in the series :P

• Okay I just found another pretty good Connection between Game of Thrones and Sarah Bolger.

Bolger had filmed a pilot called Gilded Lillys for ABC (It was not picked up). Notable though that the director who directed the pilot, also had directed episodes for Boardwalk Empire, The Tudors and Game of Thrones, Director Brian Kirk

• OursIsTheFurry,

I really doubt it. If there were such surprise casting, why have him show up now, and not earlier in the season, playing the role he has in the book?

Here’s my bet: Winterfell does get sacked in ‘Valar Morghulis,’ but we only see the before and after, with Theon’s fate a complete mystery.

• BLACKFISH BLUES…:) Sweet. Welcome back old friend. I missed you. And Josh Parker too.! This is a proper “Old Skool” thread. Please stick around you guys.

• Two Feathers,

Awww, that’s touching, Two Feathers! Hey, can you tell me which scenes you were in on the show so I can re-watch and look out for you? I remember you were a Winterfell extra in season 1.

• Holy Hell, Josh Parker, what’s with those humongous spoilers??? Someone please edit that post.

D&D have to be the most responsive showrunners ever. They have been unbelievably sensitive to fans’ feedback. Gah. How lucky were we that they snagged this project? First everyone bitched and moaned about no battles and not enough direwolves, and ‘lo and behold, both issues got addressed bigtime in S2. Then all the complaining about left out characters, and now we have this big announcement. Those guys are the BEST.

I love that Oscar Isaac suggestion. Not only does he have the look, but he’s a terrific actor. Any inclusion of the following would be superfine with me: John Hawkes, Ciaran Hinds, Andrew Scott, or Steven Waddington (for Edmure). But those are all long shots. Frankly, I think bringing back Momoa for Daario would be crazy good (and another television first). The fans would go apeshit, and they could easily change his look enough to fit that role.

I’m pretty flexible with all the casting and plot changes. I have a lot of faith in this show’s creators, and they’ve been too full of win for me to doubt their choices.

But they have to find a way to get Maggie Smith for the Queen of Thorns. I mentioned elsethread that she told Julian Fellowes that S3 of Downton Abbey will be her last, and she’s asked to have her character written out. So, snagging her for GoT is not as far-fetched as some might think. Seriously. Go back and read some of the QoT dialogue. I swear GRRM had her in mind when he wrote that part. That’s the only casting I really, really want to happen. What a coup that would be!

• PatD,

Well, this is the third time I’ve asked if the mods could edit my post, which somehow went through without spoiler tags even though I did add them (manually; my computer was being stupid). It’s possible that I put the wrong format in. But I did intend for most of that post to be spoiler-tagged.

• Those who say Theon and Ramsey probably won’t appaer in season 3 and 4, must remember first they are not gonna let Theon be off screen for two whole seasons, second Theon and Ramsey are mentioned several times in ASOS especially when Robb receives a piece of Theon’s skin, and also there’s failed escape attempt which Theon remembers back on That’s atleast a couple of scenes for season 3 right there, and I’m sure they could come up with a few more.

• HouseLark: They could be introduced after the burning of Winterfell when everyone has left; they could find Bran, Rickon, Osha and Hodor sealed in the crypt and help them get out.

That’s exactly how I envisioned the Reeds’ introduction (posted about it on some thread ages ago)…it could really work well since Jojen would know where to find them via his green dreams . Just so.

• bloodofmyblood:
excuse me, but I don’t get why all the fuss with Blackfish, in the books I didn’t really pay much attention to him, can someone explain me why all the cheering? :)

Probably because he escapes right under the noses of the Lannisters.

• Since we’re looking for links between people, Fionnula Flanagan once appeared as a guest actor on GRRM’s “Beauty and the Beast” and I still insist that she is best for the part because she’s shorter than most other actresses mentioned for the role.

• Maria Batsiou,

I had not considered Adrian Grenier for Daario, but he would be pretty good in the role if he bulked up a bit.

He has the smile and eyes that will stand out behind long hair and a thick beard and the character needs both of theose traits! Plus he has an obvious HBO connection.

• I dunno, Josh, some of the QoT dialogue is scary similar to Maggie’s stuff on Downton Abbey (I wish I’d bookmarked it on my Kindle when I did my reread before the season started). That is the only character I just can’t envision being cast any other way.

Ugh. I can’t stand Adrian Grenier. Please, no.

• Langkard,

She would be awesome in the role for sure!

She basically has already played that role in half her projects the last decade! XD
Looks like she has 2 projects in various stages of production right now and 2 in post-production so she may be a bi busy….. although QoT is a smaller role.

While I always pictured Maggie Smith as I read, I think there are a fair number of older actresses that could pull off the role well honestly.

• Nate,

WTH? Dany doesn’t HAVE a sister (unless you mean her good-sister, or, as we would say, sister-in-law). The only children her mother (Queen Rhaella) had were (in order) Prince Rhaegar, Prince Viserys, and Princess Daenerys. However, she did have a niece and nephew (Princess Rhaenys and Prince Aegon), who were the children of her eldest brother, Rheagar, and his wife Princess Elia of Dorne. Of course, if R+L=J is correct, then Jon Snow is also her nephew, but let’s stick to the established facts here.
ETA: nevermind, picture loaded, realized it was a joke

• Well, this is the third time I’ve asked if the mods could edit my post, which somehow went through without spoiler tags even though I did add them

OIC. Well, shit happens.

I hope they get it edited. There’s some major spoilers there.

• Madmage:
So the Reeds are in. Now hopefully fans of the Reeds will stop posting about how they need to be included.

well they are pretty essential to bran and his story. What annoys me is when everyone is yearning for the Queen of Throns. Shes really not that cool.

• darquemode:

Turns out she’s also been cast by Nina Gold before, in “A Christmas Carol”, the one with Jim Carrey.

One of the reasons I’m pushing so hard for her to be the Queen of Thorns is her resemblance to Natalie Dormer. If you put a pic of Natalie now next to a pic of Fionnula from 30-35 years ago (such as when she was in the miniseries “How the West Was Won”), they could easily be sisters and thus, she makes a perfect grandmother for Margaery.

lol Josh, you really need to learn those spoilertags by heart. If I remember correctly you once spoiled every major death in one single post and fucking up your tags.

seriously, Daario doesnt look like a GAP model. Hes a murderer. He should look like one albeit attractive.

• Langkard,

You just convinced me she needs to be cast in the role. Only seen her in Lost, but she did a good job there and I can definitely see her in the role :)

• Langkard,

I really like the idea of her… more so after hearing she already has a connection to Nina Gold.

Her small stature certainly fits the role better than say Maggie smith. She may be my new favorite for the role…..

• Why not have Nina buy a Chippendales blow up doll as a Daario stand-in, with functioning appendage (save money). Because that is about as important the character has been to the books, and also matches DN personality to a tea. The only function he performed is for Dany to drool all over, fantasize and ride at night. He didn’t progress the plot at all, in fact he caused Dany to regress in maturity to that of a silly, stupid tween.
I really hope D&D nixes the fuckin dude, if not please have Jason back for the role, because I could see Dany getting all tweeny for a Drogo look-a-like.

• Daario brings to mind a problem for D&D and the non-book female viewers.
Pushing Jorah to the side in favor of that trash Daario, will alienate female demo and cause them to leave.

• tysnow:

Pushing Jorah to the side in favor of that trash Daario, will alienate female demo and cause them to leave.

As long as he’s naked most the time (and they cast a really HOT actor) it won’t.

• Some ppl find Daario to be an annoying character. This might be true but he is significant to Dany’s arc. It allows the audience to be infuriated with her as she acts so childish. Ultimately leading to the refusal of the Martels proposal and Ser Barristans famous depiction of her as someone needing fire instead of dirt

I don’t see the resemblance. I got distracted by Natalie’s gorgeous face

• Awesome and Awesome
Wish they could have split this season..Really glad they are splitting the next book.
So we get 20 episodes a book?

Only bad thing..GEORGE gets extra time. :/
J/K

• J,

Randyll Tarly is also one of Renly’s advisors at Bitterbridge and Storm’s End in Catelyn’s Clash of Kings chapters – he gets a few lines. But I guess we’re already passed that point. He doesn’t come to King’s Landing with the rest of the Tyrell forces at the end of Clash because he’s off beating Robett Glover at Duskendale, which happens offscreen.

He’s an interesting character whose path hasn’t much intersected those of our POV characters yet.

• Josh Parker:

Sure thing . Flattered that you would ask. In my case its a bit late for anonymity anyway.
Season one … checking a saddle during Brans archery practice .
King Roberts arrival at Winterfell…Standing ( and kneeling ) in the middle of the archway to the crypts in the court yard. I was also outside the courtyard as the Kings party past Arya as she watched from a cart.( I was opposite the cart ). In two places at once . !
Did a few other scenes as Stark guard/ bannerman in and around Winterfell but more distant from the camera , so difficult to spot me. Also played an Umber bannerman at a chilly Robbs camp , but pretty distant also. Finally for season one I had a day as a mountain clansman. If you have sharp eyes you can pick me out as Tyrion, Shagga etc crest a small rise to get their first look at Tywins camp. ( bear skin cloak, half helm, fighting staff and axe resting on my shoulder ).
This season I got less work as the pool of extras available at least doubled due to the shows popularity . I did two night scenes in Robbs camp. A Stark bannerman bowing as Robb and Greywind past by heading for Jamie in the stockade, And a Stark Banner Lord , one of four lords to be in Robbs tent went Alton Lannister was brought in. Unfortunately only two lords were used in the final shot and I wasn`t one of them. That was disappointing as I would have had a line. “The King in the north”. My two pals did a good job though , so I was pleased for them.
Yet another camp scene was very enjoyable though . I played a Karstark bannerman ( black cloak and helm with fur trim) when Jamie was dragged back through the mud after his failed escape. Probably my favorite days work this season was as a Stark soldier after the battle of Oxcross . I did various scenes that day , collecting Lannister weapons from those who no longer needed them and other shots just walking back and forth escorting prisoners etc.
I have been lucky and privileged to be in the show from the original pilot and ASoIaF has been a big part of my life for the last three years. I have met a lot of good people and made new friends. Its been bloody brilliant. Long may it last.

• Connie: You spelled that wrong. It’s BRIAN BLESSED.And while I adore that man, I think he’s too old for Giantsbane. :(

darquemode,

Giantsbane IS old – he’s described as white-bearded. BRIAN BLESSED (thank you for the correction) would only be TOO old if he could no longer convey the physical heartiness of the character, which he clearly can, better than anyone else.

• I have a question for the people who read a Storm of Swords

I haven’t read the third book yet but I already heard about the RW. Does the RW happen in the first book of aSOS or in the second book? Because if it happens in the second, that means we can enjoy Robb for one more season right?

• Jyl,

To be honest, it’s really up in the air if D&D are going to conform to the exact timeline of SoS, seeing as they need a climax in each season. In the book, I’m fairly certain both the RW and the second climactic event both happen in the later half, which would mean a very boring season 3. My guess is that D&D will shuffle things so we’ll get one of them in season 3, and one in season 4.

After just watching my first few episodes of Skins, I’m throwing my lot in with Kaya Scodelario for Meera. Really, really enjoyed her performance.

It’s in the second volume but not at the end! I think 10nth episode of 3rd season we might see the RW! P.S. I hope the Frays will all suffer a painfull, excruciating death!

• Andrew,

Yeah, I’m more and more convinced Kaya would do a great job at Meera. Rewatched all the series/seasons she was in during her tenure on Skins and now I can’t help but see her with a trident or a spear, lol! My only issue is that I think they’d have to ugly her up a bit — I don’t know if Meera was ever described as pretty, and at any rate, she lives in a swamp!

I honestly think D&D peers into casting threads like these (if not here, than at Westeros.org) so I find them to be a lot of fun.

• I love the way she looks, and she could be aged down a bit as well as uglied up a bit, but my only concern is her schedule, she looks REALLY busy.

• ian: Madmage

If that’s the case, then there was no real reason to get bent out of shape and for people to spam threads with “OMG WE NEED THE REEDS” (paraphrasing) since if they were so vital then they’d be included.

On the other hand, if they aren’t, the producers set up Bran having his own prophetic dreams. Remember that Jojen was helping Bran interpret his own dreams as well. His sister was primarily just there for protection and hunting and for Bran to have a bit of a crush on. They could have just made Summer play a more active role to replace her; minus the crush part obviously :)

• Superdeluxe,

Very true. On top of other projects, there’s that damned reunion series of Skins…and she’d never drop out of that, because her character Effy is a fan favorite.

aSoS has so much plot, it’s not really a concern, I don’t think. Big plot points to me:

Tyrion’s Wedding, RW, PW & Sansa’s Escape, Oberyn and the Mountain, Tyrion’s Escape, Lysa being killed, Jon Snow coming over the wall and defending it from the South, Mance Rayder’s attack on the Wall, Astapor, Yunkai, Mereen, Jaime losing his hand, the Bear Pit, Coldhands, Sam the Slayer, the death of Mormont, killing Polliver, Arya at the RW, leaving the Hound to die, and I’m sure I’ve missed some. There’s more than enough plot.

• Olenna Tyrell

– vanessa redgrave
– maggie smith
– brenda blethyn
– julie christie
– eileen atkins

i think brenda could bring the humour to the role, but eileen could be more believable as a manipulative tyrell

• I trust them regarding Olenna’s casting! A plethora of talented and experienced actresses are available to choose from! We will be satisfied eventually!

• Georgie Hendley looks good as well…I hope her and Bolger are in WiC’s casting speculation thread.

• Ramsay is in Clash of Kings; he appears to wrap up the Theon part of that story. Then I don’t think we see him again till Dance with Dragons. He’s been mentioned a few times in season 2 so far. But as we’ve seen characters don’t always appear in quite the same way in the series as they do in the books (otherwise we’d have already met the Reeds). On a related note, I don’t think season 2 has ever identified Roose Bolton by name, although we’ve seen him a few times..

morbiczer,

• I’d cross these people off the list bc they’re involved with other projects (granted these could fall through, but I don’t think they will):
Ciaran Hinds- Political Animals, USA
James Purefoy- The Following, FOX
Mads Mikkelsen- Thor 2
Ray Stevenson- Dexter
Maggie Smith and Judi Dench- just don’t see it happening; both of them work more than all the other actors combined- my personal QoT choice is Eileen Atkins

• Kinda sad that they seem to not be using the Beric Dondarrion they cast in the first season. I gave them props for thinking ahead with casting.

• Shadowcat85,

Mikkelsen has 4 other films he is filming or in pre-production too….. I was really hoping he would latch onto Thrones. Ugh.

Well the good news about the actors you lsited and their projects…. Purefoy’s FOX series will be cancelled and Stevenson’s Dexter role will be finished by casting next year so that they can play Euron Greyjoy and Victarian Greyjoy as it was meant to be! XD

• andrea, Lina, Steve Hugh Westenra, Obsidian, Becky Wilson, and others I might have missed in this long long thread, thanks! Thanks also to all those who said nice things about the Blackfish and suggested awesome actors. (Rubbing my hands with glee at the thought of the Blackfish casting thread.)

I stayed away so long because any mention of the Tullys, apart from some thoughtful discussions, degenerated into either “WAAAAH WE’RE NEVER GETTING THEM” or “WHO CARES THEY ARE TOTALLY USELESS”, and my thin skin, aka BPD, could not stand it. Also I was disappointed by the lack of answers to direct questions and in general by certain decisions by D&D on the show, although I mostly liked both seasons. Now I can come back with an easier mind, I hope.

Two Feathers, thanks to you too, and cheers for your work on S2! I hope to see you a lot in S3.

The Blackfish,
well, HELLOOO.

• For Meera, they will probably go for a 20 year old who looks young, like they did with Joffrey. Little Grandfather will have to be a child actor, but they have done really great with casting child actors so far, so I aint worried. Probably realizing thats where things can go bad really bad fast. (Fantom Menace)

• andrea:
I just realized Sally Hawkins could be a perfect Selyse. She´s so good. Love that woman.

Same here! A big thumbs-up for your suggestion.

• Blackfish Blues,

welcome back, those were some epic and long arguments we had with the “I don’t get why some people love this lame-ass two-page not-important-for-the-plot side character, just cut him already!” people.

• darquemode,

The Following is getting some good press at the moment, but you’re right, anything can change. I hope that pilot succeeds though. I think it will depend on Kevin Bacon and how long he wants to work tv. And yes, Stevenson will prob croak in Dexter so that could work out :)

• I think you’re exactly right. In “ADWD” Val has a very bad reaction to meeting Shirreen& tells Jon the child is cursed,an abomination the Wildlings would have killed rather than suffer.I think Shireen as Stannis’ heir will be huge in the last two volumes.
morbiczer:
I guess if the Queen of Thorns is in, then we should get a Mace Tyrell too.

Not today’s news, as I had read this before, but I am still somewhat surprised Shireen is in. She did nothing important until now. I wonder if this means GRRM has plans for her for TWOW or ADOS?

• Macha,

thanks, I think she´ll be better than S. Henderson (because every time I see Henderson I can not help but think of “the shrew” and laugh) ;)

• Amanda Zahorik,
LOL… i think i actualy felt like ALL your emotion right there in that comment.. impresive.. congrat for being such a game-of-thrones- addict
;)

• Vallos:
I have never understood the rabid following the Reed siblings have inspired among some people.

i think mira and bran are gonna get busy at some point. that would make her more important!! they are cool characters.
As someone else mentioned, they’re pretty much walking-talking plot devices. But now that they’re cast, i’m just happy we won’t have to hear all the whining & moaning anymore. Thank the God(s)!

• Dream cast :

Maggie Smith as Olenna Redwyne Tyrell
Ron Perlman as Tormund
Michael Pitt as Reek
Liam Neeson as Brynden Tully
Oded Fehr as Oberyn Martell
Freida Pinto as Arianne Martell
Mads Mikkelsen as Euron Greyjoy

• Franny_bee,

Franny_bee:
We may see (aka NOT see) Ramsay and the sack of Winterfell through Osha’s eyes. Eg: the Ironborn are drunk and cocky and cheering themselves on (kinda like Theon in the ep 20 preview) when there is an attack.Oshakeeps the kids in the crypts while there are general horror-sounds above.

I think that now that the finale has aired, you deserve a little credit for more-or-less EXACTLY predicting how events would go down on the show. Your speculation turned out to be prescient. Well done!

• Maggie Smith immediately leapt to my mind. I loved her in Downton Abbey, and she’ll be perfect as the Queen of Thorns.

• A part of me had hoped they’d moved Theon’s storyline for A Dance with Dragons into next season, but I’m guessing the absense of a Ramsay Snow casting shoots that out of the water.

Hopefully the Red Viper will be cast for this season or the one after, surely they can’t leave him out! Unless they replace his role with Bronn and have Bronn killed by the Mountain. Hopefully not though… I’m worried now.

• Matt N,

Most missed scene to date: Arya stabbing the Tickler in the back while repeating his words back to him.

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss: Please keep the Hound and Arya scenes next season.

• spacechampion,

Not a bad theory, given that Dagmar was the mastermind behind capturing Winterfell, as well slaughtering the farm boys and not buring their bodies.

• Sharon:

buring = burying

• Indeed, Beric is noted in the books to look very different after his resurrections, so a recast makes sense.
