“Do you think the path to wealth is always pure?” – Xaro Xhoan Daxos
In this week’s episode, news of the attack on the North reaches Robb Stark, and the young king takes action. Unrest grows among the people of King’s Landing, as Cersei and Tyrion’s feud escalates. Daenerys continues to plot her invasion of Westeros but first must deal with complications in Qarth. The Night’s Watch confront their wildling enemies beyond the Wall, and Jon Snow makes a difficult decision.
Ours is the Fury: I’m really looking forward to the introduction of a certain kissed-by-fire character this week.

I’m intrigued by this spoiler that’s going around that someone shows up at Harrenhal who could identify Arya. a) who could that be? Initially I assumed it would be someone amongst the northerner prisoners brought in, setting up the weasel soup episode, but in the rumour I saw, it was kind of implied that it was someone hostile to Arya who would give her away if he or she saw her. Unless it’s someone we’ve not met before, that means it would have to be from a pretty elite group at K-L??? b) If it’s a new character, that could determine Arya’s second name to Jaqen – someone she has to get rid of pretty sharply to preserve her cover???
Trant. That’s the only existing character I can think of who knows Arya from K-L and who would be minor enough to kill – if Joffers has despatched him up to grandad on some errand or other?? Proponents of S=J would wet themselves if that panned out :D

So… the News Bolton gives Cat… It seems to soon to be the attack on Winterfell. Perhaps they are hearing about Torrhen’s Square and the Ironmen attacking the Northern Coasts?

Secret guest in Harrenhal is going to be someone, I think, who Tyrion is going to send there to meet with Tywin because of Stannis danger. That could be Varys, because he has nothing to do in KL (in series) and he was absent from last 2 episodes so D&D maybe sent him to Harrenhal and maybe he will see Arya, but he will not give her away so she will not sent Jaquen on him. Btw. where is Kevan Lannister? He was not in Harrenhal on a war meeting of his brother…

Episode 3 Littlefinger was in Kings Landing, Beginning of episode 4 Littlefinger was in the Stormlands. I originally thought it was going to be Littlefinger, but I’ve been thinking whoever it is will probably be her 2nd kill, maybe someone we never seen on the show or doesn’t even exist in the books just a made up character from the north who knows who she is.
JamesLQuote Reply
Nick Larter,
It is not going to be Trant— Simply because Trant seems to be taking the place of Ser Mandon Moore… and it will be escential for Pod to kill someone during the Blackwater to save Tyrion, Trant seems like the only logical solution– because he’s been the only Kingsgaurd featured in this season.

Ours is the FuryQuote Reply
Your logic is sound enough, I suppose they could get someone else – a new character? to do that deed, but as you say Trant does seem to be morphing into Kingsguard everyman – they’ll have him sleeping with Arianne Martell next . That’ll wind folk up :D. I like the Nymeria idea, except that then the idea of Arya at risk of being given away doesn’t really work (unless of course someone sees her with a socking great wolf and puts two and two together). By a process of elimination I think we’re establishing it’s Varys, who decides not to give her away and that Jaqen’s second kill is Lorch. LF in his boots of speed is a possibility, but I can’t think of any reason why he would not give Arya away, whereas I can believe Varys would be more sympathetic.
Nick LarterQuote Reply
I agree. Whoever the visitor is will probably be her second kill. They need to find a reason for her not naming Tywin as her second kill this week. Her life being in immediate danger by this visitor possibly blowing her cover would be a perfect explanation.
I’m looking forward to seeing what they think of to explain her not choosing Tywin as her third kill in weeks to come.
Yep. There certainly seems to be a lot of excitement going on in Qarth that was not in the books. Digital Spy also hinted at a change there that follows from a scene in last week’s episode.
RemaalQuote Reply
The logical choice for #2 would be Ser Amory Lorch, who put the sword in Yoren’s back if this one is not mistaken. Arya would have mad hatred for Lorch, and would have known him from her time in KL. It has been mentioned in other places that somebody steals a dragon from Dany, that would be a big change from the book and add some drama to an otherwise quiet time in Qarth. Dany is seen running frantically in the clip, that would be a good reason to get frantic. The visitor could very well be Nymeria if Arya gets time to visit the godswood alone? There have been no views of her practicing her swordsmanship with a stick, which was frequently mentioned in the book POV chapters. It would be awesome to see Nymeria. And more of my Jaqen of course.

Book Spoiler:
There’s a very good reason in the books for her not killing Tywin. First, I believe he leaves Harrenhal and leaves it to the Goat — who I assume we are not getting and is getting replaced by the Mountain here at least. This is when she gets all regretful for not having been more strategic in her kills.
Second, she needs a way out, so she needs to use her last kill to saver herself — escape and free the prisoners that Vargo Hoat has brought in.

Last week, we learned that Tyrion is now aware of the massive stockpiles of wildfire in KL and also, of the massive dangers inherent in allowing untrained soldiers handle the stuff. In addition, he is aware of his father’s losses against Robb’s army.
Given that Tywin hasn’t sent any ravens in weeks, Tyrion might well decide to send a courier they both trust in order to propose a mutually beneficial trade: Tyrion gets several hundred battle-hardened troops and in return, Tywin gets hundreds of flasks of wildfire.
However, Tyrion would have to make this look as if this had been approved by Joffrey. After all, Tywin had sent him to KL in his own stead as Hand of the King. The most credible messenger in this context might be the Hound, as he’s a member of the Kingsguard who has a rapport with Tyrion regarding Joffrey. Even so, Tyrion would presumably insist that the message was for Tywin’s eyes only.
Arya would definitely recognize this courier, both from hearsay and from the tourney. I’m not sure if he would recognize her but he might not say anything even if he did, figuring it was an issue above his pay grade. We might even get to see a brief, tense moment featuring him and the Mountain That Embraced Jenny Craig!
All of the above is, of course, pure speculation on my part.

Yes, I realize that’s the explanation presented in the book – which to be honest I found to be a bit tenuous while reading – but in the show they have her privy to Tywin’s war council and his deliberations regarding Robb, which should make him a more constant presence in her mind as a real and unwavering threat to her brother & mother, much more so than in the books.
It could work if they phrase and sequence properly, I suppose. We’ll see.

“I need fighters, not kitchen sluts!” Theon to Osha at Winterfell
“Maybe you should devise our next battle plan while you’re about it.” Tyrion to Cersei or potentially Quorin/one of the three men with him to Jon
“Strike hard and true, Jon Snow, or I’ll come back and haunt you.” Hmmm, I wonder : )
“I’m no ordinary woman – my dreams come true!” No idea–Myrcella, Ygritte or Cersei? Shae perhaps?
“Kill them – kill them all!” Guessing Joffrey to the starving crowds in KL. Little turd. Hope Tyrion can slap some sense into him, or at least just slap him.

Tywin’s quote from prev. episode. [book 3 spoilers]I think not long after that, Tywin’s plan has been set in motion. I think, he has bought Roose Bolton, who will go North to “help” WF(how else would Robb “act”, as the summary says) and I think the Red Wedding will be a Frey only afair. Which in turn means, that the whole Stark downfall would be orchestrared by Tywin(while in the books, the Bastard of Bolton acted pretty much on his own, iirc). As a book fan, I wouldn’t be too happy, if the things turn in that direction, but as a viewer I actually think it would work. It would be in line with general simplification(without too much damage), that seems to be the key guideline for the writers (this season more than last). Hope it makes sense. :)

I don’t think it’s really tenuous in the books. She’s 8 there. But even here, her next kill will likely be to prevent her exposure — so yes, that would take precendence — and then if Tywin leaves suddenly, what’s she going to do? Jaqen would just show up. Additional, I don’t blame Arya one bit for not sacrificing herself to kill Tywin Lannister — who I’m sure she knows but probably doesn’t really grasp how important he is to that family.

Arya has an excellent reason to want him dead, especially if he recognises her.

TVGuide has put up a little summary for this episode http://www.tvguide.com/News/Weekend-TV-Roundup-1046958.aspx
“MORE SUNDAY GOODNESS: The hits just keep on coming on Sundays, including HBO’s strongest lineup of originals in quite some time. In a spectacular and, as usual, sprawling installment of Game of Thrones (9/8c), there are crucial tests of leadership and manhood for Theon Greyjoy as he makes his move to occupy Winterfell and for Jon Snow in the snowy North as his Night Watch away team encounters a tribe of Wildlings. Back in Kings Landing, Tyrion memorably squares off against the horrid little King Joffrey after chaos erupts on the unruly streets, and in the desert city of Qarth, “mother of dragons” Daenerys works the local merchants to invest in her crusade to take back the Seven Kingdoms. But as usual, my heart belongs to adorable Arya Stark, who bonds with brutal Tywin Lannister over the importance of reading while staving off several close calls at exposing her secret identity. I can’t believe we’re already past the halfway point of this bustling season.”
A few critics on twitter have said this is the best one so far this season and looking at the summary it’s definitely seems like it’s going to be the most exciting episode yet for season 2.
JamesLQuote Reply
I think Arya’s second killing wish will be this person who could out her identity. Then she has to place her third killing wish on we know who, because Tywin dashes to King
‘s Landing to meet Stannis’s assault. This takes Tywin out of the game at Harrenhal. Tywin leaves Lorch in charge and unknowingly takes himself out of harm’s way. Then everyone knows the title to Episode 20, don’t we?

Okay so this is a brainfart stemming from the Dagmer=Ramsay theory. If we are to assume that Dagmer is Roose’s bastard brother or something of the like, then his meet and greet with Theon at the quay in Lordsport is starting to make sense in this regard. Roose would have known that Theon was dispatched to the Iron Islands to win Balon to Robb’s side against the Lannisters. Dagmer or Ramsay could have hid on the boat that brought Theon over following Roose’s instructions to see how the situation with Balon played out. Shrewd customer that he is, Roose knew what the outcome would be and sent Ramsay to Pyke with Theon to begin planning the attack on Winterfell with the Ironmen. But for this theory to work the writers would have to come up with a story as to why the other Ironborn on the Sea Bitch were not aware of the new crewmember/new face.
Perhaps Dagmer is an agent of Ramsay or a sellsword hired to coerce Theon so that Winterfell would be ready for Ramsay’s taking?
Or…the rumour about Bolton’s bastard being mentioned next episode is true, and Ramsay is going to show up in full plate armour (or secretly cast…come on Andrew Scott) and stick it to Rodrik and co on the pretence of reinforcing Winterfell. As for the great Dagmer scene that Alfie Allen is talking about, perhaps Dagmer will die in this version, killed dramatically by Ramsay in the last minutes of the finale? I have a scenario in my head about Ramsay storming Winterfell and after killing Dagmer greets Theon like an old friend, talking about their days as boys and how Theon looked down upon him. Or something of the sort. Whereby he ends the conversation with an incapacitating blow to Theon’s head. Maybe he spears Luwin, cut to Bran, Hodor, Rickon and Osha emerging from the crypts followed by the final scene with the Fist of the First Men.

In the Episode Guide the implication is that Dany will receive an invitation the the House of the Undying in Episode 17, and perhaps goes in Episode 18 against Jorah’s advise. The craziness will come. Patience grasshopper.

Zach,
That was the final scene they filmed, it doesn’t mean it will be the final shot of the season. The scenes are all filmed out of order.
JamesLQuote Reply
You guys sure can come up with some interesting theories :P
I’m excited to see Myrcella’s departure, though. That should be a cool scene, especially if Tyrion kicks Joffrey and shouts that it should have been him to die and all that. Deffinitely something the audience can cheer for.

I hope this isn’t the case, as it would ruin what I felt was one of the best moments from ADwD, that being when Jon beheads him.
LordDavos12Quote Reply
D&D aren’t that foolish. Janos is the guy who everyone expects to be named Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch before Sam convinces the other brothers to vote for Jon. And yes, Jon beheading the guy who had a part in Ned’s beheading was one of the best parts of ADWD.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
LordDavos12,
I agree. I loved that part of the book.
However, if D&D secretly think that they won’t get as far as ADWD in the series, then it’ll be nice to see him get his comeuppance early.

The HBO synopsis for Episode 2.10- Valar Morghulis is out.
Episode #20: “Valar Morghulis”: Tyrion awakens to a changed situation. King Joffrey doles out rewards to his subjects. As Theon stirs his men to action, Luwin offers some final advice. Brienne silences Jaime; Arya receives a gift from Jaqen; Dany goes to a strange place; Jon proves himself to Qhorin. (Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss; directed by Alan Taylor.) (TV-MA)
darquemodeQuote Reply
Well, we now know which episode the ‘House of the Undying’ will be in.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
Tyrion Pimpslap,
My thoughs exactly…
Also, I wonder how Brienne will silence Jaime. I doubt they would have her slice off his hand would they? It would add some drama and intensity for sure, but it feels wrong to me… Maybe just having her soundly defeat him after he picks up Cleos’ sword and attacks her? Hmmm…
darquemodeQuote Reply
So Jon’s arc ends with Jon killing Qhorin, Dany’s ends in the HOTU, Tyrion’s ends with Tywin coming home and taking over the Handship. But what’s Theon upto? Is he stirring his men to defend against a Bolton attack?
Brienne silencing Jaime? I agree with darquemode, I doubt it’s anything more than her kicking his ass in a fight?
RemaalQuote Reply
I think I like this. THOTUis arguably the highlight of Danys story in ACOK, so ending it there seems about right. Theres no outdoing her ending in season 1, but it looks as though they are trying to at least somewhat satisfy the probably sky-high expectations of non-readers. Also, this could mean they are going all-out for this scene(s).
sjweningsQuote Reply
Quick question? is weasel soup taken out in the tv-series altogether or will it appear, what you think? Indication is that its taken out?
Paul pluttQuote Reply
They’ve named the gaoler Weasel which suggests they are keeping some varient of Weasel soup.
MormegilQuote Reply
darquemode,
I doubt it, and I really hope it doesn’t happen – It would totally ruin the dynamic of their relationship and, IMO, Jamie and Brienne’s relationship is one of the most ambiguous and interesting in the books. I hope they manage to reflect that in the show – I certainly think the actors are good enough for it.
AJCQuote Reply
Sure sounds like Luwin is going to die. That is likely good news for the Reeds in the future. I’m now revising my opinion that they will probably show up in season 3 to exttend Brans fairly short arc.
House SnowQuote Reply
Paul plutt,
In episode 8 synopsis we have:
That’s when we’ll have Jaqen being coerced by Arya into helping her escape, and what will most likely be the show’s equivalent of the book’s weasel soup.
RemaalQuote Reply
If the episode 10 synopsis are taking us where I think it will end, then it looks like they are saving the last part of A clash of Kings till the beginning of season 3 giving room to introduce all those characters and events still to come.
DanielQuote Reply
It will be hard to match the intensity of the birth of the dragons at the end of season 1. Then again, it wasn’t as much of a surprise in the show as it was in the book. One of my few small nitpicks on the season – too much foreshadowing with the eggs. Having you know who turn up alive may even be more powerful and surprising, if done right.
BgapQuote Reply
ThePinkDragon,
(Whispers to Jaqen) Ok good job on the Reeds. Now take out the Blackfish for me.

Bgap,
Hopefully we will see Ser Barristan in the last episode. Newbies really liked his character and believe he has been completely forgotten.

bon,
Nice catch! Thanks for the info….
I always assumed they would need an Aerys for that bit of Dany’s vision in The Hosue of the Undying. Nice to know that we will get a good look at the Mad King though! Maybe they will even play that vision out a bit more than the flash in the books?
darquemodeQuote Reply
I’m guessing that was part of the shooting for the original pilot – before they decided to stop using flashbacks.
LarsQuote Reply
Ours is the Fury,
Yes, I thought by now they would have had him more around than just an off-hand mention and one appearence at Tyrion’s dinner with Janos Slynt.
JeremyQuote Reply
Yeah I’m guessing that was from the scene of Brandon and Rickards death that was filmed but never used.
I suppose it could still be inserted into the upcoming HotU as one of the visions.
MormegilQuote Reply
I’ve always thought it was done as part of the main filming but I could be wrong.

Bgap,
My guess at the big cliffhanger for the season would be the prologue from ASOS. They have already started setting us up for it and I think it would have the intensity to keep us all obsessed until next year.
shaggydogQuote Reply
Yeah, he was pretty good in that! But that movie could have been so much better, if it had a better script.
LexQuote Reply
darquemode,
Cool, cool. So one of the final scenes will be at the House of the Undying. Very appropriate, since Dany’s visions foretell important events in Season 3. It would also include a final scene with her dragons!

Personally I hope the last scane of the Daenerys storyline will be when we see Ser Barristan introduce himself as Arstan the squire
Lyonel the RedQuote Reply
I doubt that D&D will introduce Ser Barristan as Arstan the squire. Strong Belwas has not been cast.
TurncloakQuote Reply
As much as I love Strong Belwas, he seems like a pretty cuttable character to me.

I was Bumed when Loki forgot the other half of his line “only me”

J,
I agree, though I like the character very much so I do hope they cast him.
as far as I remember he’s more like a background character with only a few major scenes in the books
DanielQuote Reply
Chai_latte,
If it’s done well it will be like Joss Whedon’s “Restless” at the end of BTVS Season 4, a series of dream vignettes that foreshadow many events to come in the series.
Love that Alan Taylor is directing.
And to other comments made on this topic, how does the non-casting of Strong Belwas this season imply that we will not see Barristan/Arstan?
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
It does if you assume we won’t have one without the other. I think it’s just as likely the big guy won’t be cast at all (which would bum me out but wouldn’t surprise me), although then Arstan won’t have anybody to “squire” for.
