Just three episodes left in season two. Tonight is the Alan Taylor directed “The Prince of Winterfell”. It should be a good one. Talk amongst yourselves as the episode nears and give us your reactions as it airs. Just like last week, we will have a recap thread up as soon as the episode ends for you all to discuss the episode. My thoughts will be added to that post later. We also will have the new viewer thread up for those who wish to discuss the series without fear of book spoilers.
Here are the details for episode 18:
Writers: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss
Director: Alan Taylor
Runtime: 54 min
Synopsis: At Winterfell, Theon receives a visitor and holds down the fort. Arya calls in her final debt with Jaqen in a way that displeases him. Robb is betrayed. Tyrion and Varys find common ground. Dany ignores Jorah’s advice. Stannis and Davos approach their destination, and Davos is offered a reward.

Please show Catelyn releasing Jaime. We didn’t get this scene in the books, we only hear about it. Hopefully this is the betrayal that Robb faces. I hope they keep a lot of the dialogue from the book in the Arya/Jaqen scene. My hope is that we see a bunch of Northern prisoners being brought into Harrenhal this episode and it leads to Arya saying her third and final name. They can save the hot Weasel soup jailbreak for the finale, which could lead to Roose taking the castle.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
Just hope that Dagmer is not Ramsey and that Tywin lives on and the events at Harrenhal are more like the book. I want some weasel soup….
Also excited for some potential Jaime and Brienne scenes possibly 10th episode.
And some Drogon fire at the House of the Undying, doubt it we will see the “blue rose” or “RW foreshadowing” or even “his is the song of Ice and Fire”, but you never know, if they do it’ll be extremely badass, but I’m sure new viewers wouldn’t have the slightest idea what they are seeing, but then again D&D know what they’re doing so let’s hope for the best.

Really hope Ros gets killed off tonight. Have really enjoyed not having her and the pointless exposition scenes that she brings with her on the show for the last 3 weeks. Makes sense that
she was to take her place, yet I find it very strange if she is the one Cersei have abducted/tortured/killed or whatever they have planned in order to pressure Tyrion. There have been absolute no indication in the show that Ros and Tyrion have any sort of relationship that would make Cersei think she can use her against him.
DanielQuote Reply
It’s funny because in her interview she misses the point of why people don’t like her character…
It’s not that she is offensive, it’s because her character just doesn’t belong. She is being elevated to an “important” character with the amount of screen time and attention she gets.
That’s the part that offends me. I rather see Arya Tywin scenes. If they want to show some sexual stuff then give us Jon and Ygritte or Robb and Jeyne…
I HATE Ros…
Okay I must breath… The news that she is in tonight’s episode sucks but I’ll get over it.

Also, the majority of viewers aren’t book readers, so they have no idea if Ros is a character created for the show or not. They don’t care if she’s taking 5 minutes from another “important” character (which she isn’t anyway, her scenes are almost never about her). For them, she’s just another supporting characters in a show with lots of them.

How many book pages were spent on the character of Alayaya and what she gets up to, prior to that scene?
And how many minutes of Game of Thrones have been spent (thusfar….since we know there is more to come) on Ros?
Hopefully you see what I’m getting at. The character isn’t “pointless” but she’s a waste of precious time for whatever impact she will ultimately have.
I would have rather had Alayaya introduced in a series of perhaps 3 under five minute scenes, than the show’s method of spending time mistakenly thinking everybody is tuning in to see softcore porn rather than watch a story unfold, and we get a Ros-porn scene every other episode.

Anyway, some non-Ros-related speculation. I’m still wondering about the nature of Davos’s “reward”. There’s been some speculation that it will be Stannis offering to raise him to Lord and/or name him Hand of the King. However, I’m wondering if perhaps he gets offered a reward by someone else. Now, I think Liam Cunningham said he ends the season in a dungeon, so it can probably be assumed that he goes back to Dragonstone and his fate isn’t left up in the air in the same way that it is in ACoK. What if it’s something like Davos is offered a reward by someone to throw the battle and he refuses, but when he returns to Dragonstone, after the disaster of the Wildfire et al, Mel has told Stannis that she saw Davos betray him in the flames at the Blackwater and that’s why he’s imprisoned, rather than for wanting to kill Melisandre?
I dunno, it will probably end up being what people are speculating about, but I just wanted to talk about something other than Ros.

It is embarrassing to read the childish and unwarranted hate for a good actress and a fine character. The only real mark anyone can claim against Ros is that she isn’t in the books. That is it.

Well, that and her primary role in the series being as a tool for awkward exposition and juvenile titillation. Nudity may not be offensive, but forced, awkward “LOOKIT THE HOT CHICKS” scenes aren’t so much offensive as they are crass and feel like something out of an exploitation movie.
Yeah, given the source material sex and nudity is really not out of place in GoT – its borderline omnipresent in the books as well – but how the show handles it a lot of the time is really not its strong point.
Frankly though, for me its not so much that Ros herself is an issue (Esme Bianco isn’t a bad actress, and I thought the character was fine in the first season) so much as the scenes she’s in, If anything in the worst of them (In my opinion at least) was Littlefinger’s “Shame if something happened” monologue and that had more to do with it being the dramatic equivalent of having Littlefinger eat a puppy while twirling his moustache just to remind the audience he’s the bad guy in the most simplistic way possible than Ros herself.
Ros isn’t a dreadful character, when the scene she’s in isn’t jarringly terrible she can be rather likeable – she’s just more of a tool used for some of the series weakest scenes.

I dunno, season 2 wise I liked the Cersei/Littlefinger scene and the Ros/Littlefinger scene. I also loved the episode 5 scene when we see Stannis’ armada approaching Renly’s encampment and Littlefinger is watching from the cliffs leading to the Tyrell consult. Great moment. The Tywin/LF scene was great fun too. Loved how Tywin reminds LF of his place.
I think LF knows that everyone thinks he’s Captain Obvious and he is playing on their expectations of him. I think David and Dan realized that LF is pretty much absent for most of book 2 and they had to give him more screen time. Also not every audience demographic appreciates the nuances and subtleties like we do, an LF in the background would probably have come across as boring. They had to amp up his malevolence. And the show needs these audiences to survive.
Could they have directed/written some of his scenes a little better? Definitely.

Seriously, people?!? Would you stop already? It’s getting really old! And nobody’s forcing you to watch the show wo if you got a problem with it, just skip it. The writers obviously want her there and we fans sometimes act like GoT is our brainchild. It ISN’T. There’s things bound to get disliked and I firmly believe that if David and Dan spent their time reading the threads and trying to calculate every -ship and -gate into their script, the show would be pretty shi**y to watch.
The bit*hing is really disrespectful towards the actress, as well – and I think it casts a really bad light on the fandom.
It’s an adaptation. I never liked the Sword of Truth series, but I think what they did with the TV series Legend of the Seeker is just … sad. But we don’t even realize that we could have gotten a very similar thing. Sure there are changes … but overall, the adaptation is pretty darn true to the source material.
And I do like Ros. She’s layered and sensitive and resourceful and not just your random fantasy-type prostitute.

Why specifically put in the last episode, halfhand asking ygritte, if they captured him what would the wildlings do? “If they was nice, they would chop off your head, if they wasn’t, they would kill you slough.”
Why put that in if you are just gonna take em prisoner. It would make them wildlings look like a bunch of civilized pussies, and that back and forth less than pointless.

I understand they want to keep the character on screen, I just feel that how they are doing so hasn’t necessarily done the character any favors, even to the wider audience in general. I like to compare it to Tywin, who they have similar found a creative way to keep on screen. Even while expanding on the character, they have not lost what made him such an interesting character in the first season.

Two independent plans for defending KL is a recipe for desaster, so I’m wondering how Tyrion will sideline Joffrey. So many babies in this thread. If you seriously can’t stand a character in a television show so much, get the funding to do your own adaptation of A Song of Ice & Fire and forego writing any scripts in lieu of simply using the books. Let me know how that goes for you. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy D&D’s adaptation, made-up (amalgamated, perhaps?) characters and all. Oh, and one last thing: Ros hasn’t been naked in any scene she’s been a part of (notice I didn’t mention any scenes that she was explicitly featured in, as there really aren’t any) this season, so the titillation complaint is a bit off-base. Unless you consider babies being murdered, thinly veiled death threats, and forced sodomy to be “titillating”, of course. In which case, you’ve got bigger problems than worrying yourselves sick over a fictional television character.

How many scenes have we had that were focused on Ros?
Oh right, one. Which was a lead in to the baby murdering scene. All the others have other characters who are the draw, and Ros is just there. If people would look past the fact that she’s there they might just realize there’s another character that’s being explored. While I think the “play with her arse” scene was several degrees too far, the character of Ros is a minor character who barely appears, and when she does it’s to show how other characters respond to her, not to showcase her personality or goals. I swear the problem is that they named the character, if no one was up in arms at them making up a charater people would just be like “oh it’s that one prostitute”, not “OMFG I HAVE TO WATCH TWO MINUTES OF THEON TALKING TO SOMEONE WHO WASN’T IN THE BOOK”.

Outside of the purists who loathe anything that deviates from the books, I’ve never understood the outright hatred for Ros. People act like they’ve never seen a pair of titties before (FYI: sex isn’t just a device in storytelling, it’s real).
You would’ve thought her neighbor’s cow stopped giving milk, based on the Salem-esque reactions to her lesbian scene from last season. I actually expected the opposite sort of reaction, but I guess some of the people on this board can’t appreciate the finer things in life.

First of all, Happy Birthday Lex (way to beg, dude).
Second, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Esmé Bianco.
She plays the role as well as humanly possible.
She is beautiful and talented.
It is her character, Ros, that I HATE, HATE, HATE.
//1960s movie reference//
I wish. I wish. I wish Ros was a fish.
‘Cause fishes have a better life than trollops.
//end 1960s movie reference//
But, I digress. Esmé clearly needs her own HBO show. One in which she is done by Dominic West. Repeatedly. I miss Dominic West. Speaking of redheads done by Dominic West, whatever happened to Deirdre Lovejoy?
Okay, back to business.
“Theon receives a visitor.” Who else hopes we get a Yara bitchslap of Theon?
“Arya calls in her final debt with Jaqen.” Who knows? The way this is going it could be anyone.
“Robb is betrayed.” Three letters: N. C. W.
“Tyrion and Varys find common ground. ” I hope it’s chain-related.
“Dany ignores Jorah’s advice.” And then she realizes that the last door on the left is also the first door on the right, baby!
“Stannis and Davos…” Probably Blackwater-related.

Dany’s arc must include her retribution against Ducksauce, the despicable thief of her babies. This must happen after the HotU when she and her dragons, despite their tiny size, will rain “fire and blood” down upon him so she can grab the key to his amazing vault, thereby funding her efforts in season 3. (There must be a reason why D&D set an entire scene in front of this fabulous door.) Dany’s triumph and subsequent enrichment would be a most satisfying denoument to this season.
Regarding the rage against Ros: I’m resigned to her presence. She has a beautiful body and exquisite skin, and, though a life-long hetero female, I can appreciate this beauty in another. I also believe that she’s kept clothed all season 2 because of her apparent condition, so we can expect she’ll disrobe again in season 3.

I’m sure its logistics. I doubt the show wants to hire a guy to do nothing for a year and I’m sure the actor didn’t want to stand around and do nothing for year. Its probably why minor characters like Irri and the tickler get killed off, so the show doesn’t have to worry about something coming up like it did for oldMountain, and rarhako.

Arthur,
I was on two recent episodes of A Podcast of Ice and Fire. It’s mostly based on the books (although they do HBO episode reviews), and is full of dirty humour. In my opinion, it’s by far the best ASOIAF podcast out there (and that’s coming from someone who was heavily critical of them last year).
I was critical last year, because I only heard one episode (out of context) when they were being quite critical of the show (they tend to be on the purist side of things). It takes a few episodes to get used to their sense of humour, and the personalities of the hosts. They’re close to 80 episodes now (they really started getting good around Episode 32, when our very own Phil/WiC was a guest… FaB has also been a guest numerous times).
I’d recommend listening to their recent Guys Night Out episodes, or their ADWD review episodes.

It’s funny how people hate Ros but they don’t hate D&D who wrote her. It’s not actresses fault, she just acts what they wrote for her. Esme Bianco is a good actor, but D&D are not very good writers. But hey, let’s criticize her cuz we can’t criticize D&D, who are considered gods in the GoT community.

He looked the part well enough but he hardly seemed drunk and barely seemed bumbling. This is partly the writers’ fault, I suppose, as he didn’t have quite as memorable an entrance as in the book, but he really seemed to have no screen presence whatsoever, such that pretty much the only thing I saw people mentioning was his Captain Americaesque breastplate. If/when he does reappear I’m guessing most non-readers will have completely forgotten who he is.
Steven SwansonQuote Reply
Arthur,
It really is the best podcast! The hosts feel like friends after 80 episodes and I find myself wondering what they’ll think of various changes as I watch. The episodes with WiC and FaB are great, and they sometimes have Alex from Tower of the Hand on too. The Guys Night Outs are hilarious, but the Girl’s Night Out eps are great too – especially the most recent one.
I strongly recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor!
QueensmootQuote Reply
If Ros turns up in Winterfell in her distress while LF is away and throws herself at Theon who ‘didn’t want to pay for it’ instead of being the prostitute that Cersei kidnaps then you know for definite that Dagmer is Ramsay and he’s gonna ‘ave ‘er. Even if she doesn’t the chance is high. The actors playing Dagmer/highly possible Ramsay (Ineson) and Roose(McElhatton) look alike and are playing the roles similar. They’ve just got rid of the reek plot line cause it’s too much to explain and wouldn’t come across well told in retrospect (the abductions and why he ended up in that jail as Reek.)
They’ve built up the ‘bastard’ coming to get Theon and they will reveal him as a sadist and sneak enjoying seeing how far Theon would go, just as Ramsay should be revealed. All they have to explain is that he was sent by his father to tail Theon’s journey to the Iron Islands. They can keep Ramsay as a renegade dark bastard in opposition to the idea of the ideal bastard in Jon Snow and this way they can keep the Roose betrayal extra specially shocking at the RW. Despite the fact that they are looking for a cast a 20-30 year old with an unusual look, I think this version is highly likely.
BTW the people that are saying that the actor playing Ramsay is older than the actor Roose are almost certainly confusing the age of Michael McElhatton (37) the footballer with the age of the actor Michael McElhatton playing Roose. The guy playing Roose could easily pass for 50′s and the guy playing Ramsay could pass for 30′s.

The thing I like most about listening to these podcasts. Is, just like this thread for instance, there are usally arguments about both small issues and large issues that parallel the same kind of comments that are here. (Though there are no personal attacks).
It’s funny when a wedge issue comes up. You have 2 kinds of posters. Those that argue and debate the GoTs topic being brought up. And those that attack the poster for bringing up the topic.
The great thing about podcasts is that it filters out all the personal attacks and there is a meaningful discussion on the hot topics that we all are so familiar with and staked out our sides.
I enjoy listening to them very much and hear people make very small, yet important points that I never thought of.

At first I had expected them to do HotU this episode, what with how E17 ended, but with these official synopses I’m prepared to wait for episode 20 to see it. Kind of a bummer but I’m sure it will still be great. I just don’t know how they’re going to do any Dany scenes apart from that one, so we might be in for a week or two of no Dany :(
ZackQuote Reply
Speaking of Dany, what the hell happened to Doreah? Where is she? It must be important, because D & D changed things so that she did not die in the Red Waste, and I doubt they would do that if she didn’t have a role to play… Is she one of the Three Treasons (three treasons you shall know. one for blood, one for love, one for gold)? And if so, which one would she replace? I mean, we already had one for blood (Mirri Maz Duur), and they can’t change the one for love (Ser Jorah) and while they could make her the one for gold (who is presumably Brown Ben Plumm) it would not make much sense unless Xaro was promised to, say, give her they key to that vault

Not really into the PoIaF. I prefer the Bjork Brothers podcasts.
Orp,
McElhatton does look fiftyish, but Ralph Ineson is 42, and couldn’t pass for much younger than late thirties. If they had switched it to be a bastard brother, I could live with it, but they’re just so close in age, it’s a bit ridiculous if that is what they intend. I can overlook it because I like the actors, but it’ll be a stretch.

I’m with you. It’s one of those things where the logic seems tricky, but it’s not worth overthinking to me because both actors bring a lot to the table, and I’m sure it will be fun to watch.
But I don’t see the show going that route just because, yeah, their ages are obviously awfully close to play father-son believably. Anyway I don’t think we’ll find out one way or the other until the season finale, because tonight Theon’s scenes are likely to be focused around Asha. Regardless, his scenes tonight are my second most anticipated, after Arya’s.

Same with me. Ineson’s little evil smiles screams Ramsay and any decent cover for anything questionable they throw at us regarding this change i’ll be more than willing to accept. I think he’ll nail it if that’s what they’ve decided.
There’s a massive finale for Winterfell (the sacking almost certainly) that involves Dagmer and Theon. These changes quite often seem ridiculous until the audience see’s them played out and up to now I think their streamline changes have been efficient and entertaining for time constraints and the fact it’s for the screen. It will also genuinely shock a lot of book readers which will be interesting because most around these parts don’t believe in the theory. If he’s not Ramsay i’ll be more shocked at the moment.
It will be super hard to set up Ramsay properly next season if this isn’t it. They’ve avoided the prison, abduction of Lady Hornwood, Reek subplot and they’ve killed Rodrick but set up a shock potential betrayal with the likely Dagmer ruse. Also, it’s set up without giving too much away about Bolton’s potentially switching sides outright. It’s less battling Rodrick Stark troops outside and more demented, personal and sociopathic.

Ok, that scene with Varys talking to Tyrion about Dany… was he trying to see if he should let Tyrion in on the whole “Young Griff”/Aegon thing? I think he might have been… Also, in the scene with Jaime and Brienne, was that the BwB on the bridge in the background. On another note, GREAT acting by Dinklage in the scene with Cersei and Daisy! And they actually kept one of Arya’s names the same! Additionally, I loved the look on Jorah’s face when Dany asked if he remembers when she stepped into the fire and he says he’ll never forget, as well as his expression when he tells her he would die for her… total shipping fuel! But all of that is nothing compared when she reaches out and touches his cheek. He’s all “must…not…react…to the fact that she is touching my cheek… must…not…let…feelings…show…” (he failed miserably at that last part though –the character, not the actor). Now THAT was shipping fuel! Actually, all of the interactions between Jorah and Dany in this episode were fuel for shippers…
