A guess based on some of what we saw in one of the trailer’s for this week’s episode:
Lancel, not Podrick, will save Tyrion. That’s just a complete guess, and I could be entirely wrong, but a) we haven’t really seen much of Podrick in the show, so giving him a “saves the day” moment might be pretty jarring to non-book readers, and b) Lancel and Tyrion have had a number of moments together this season, so playing up their relationship even more might make some sense..
Again, that’s just a shot-in-the-dark guess, but it would make a fair bit of sense to me.

Nothing fancy seems appropriate for a dour dirge. I thought it was spot-on, musically. The only thing that would improve it in my mind is for it to be sung with a British accent, to match the rest of the Westerosi on the show.

The opening of “Rains of Castemere” made me think they were about to burst into “Hurdy Gurdy Man”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg-n7Yfm6wQ&feature=fvst
I mean, it’s a perfectly good tune, but I’m assuming that’s not the version they’re using on the show. Doesn’t sound medieval enough.
So…the rumours appear to be true, that this entire episode is devoted to the battle of Blackwater, with no cutaways to the other subplots (i.e., no Bran, Arya, Jon, Robb, Dany, Cat or Jaime). On one level, that’s INCREDIBLY COOL, but on another, it means that everything else–especially Dany’s visit to the House of the Undying–is going to seem pretty rushed.

Mormegil,
nightwolf,
Yeah, I had also considered the possibility that Lancel would take the role of Ser Moore, but the attempt on Tyrion’s life has less emotional resonance than the attempt to save it. As such, the attempted killer doesn’t need to be anyone we care about, but the person who saves him ought to be. The books don’t really tell us much about Mandon Moore – he’s just a faceless Kingsguard goon, and we don’t really know anything about him other than that – so I don’t see a problem with the fact that we haven’t heard much of him on the show either. All we really need to know about him is who likely put him up to the task. I actually think they might have Boros Blount do the job instead, since he’s much more recognizable as a villainous Kingsguard in the show, but… who knows?
Then again, this is the episode GRRM wrote for this season, so it might stay pretty true to the books. We shall see…

My only problem with the version of ‘The Rains of Castamere’ on the soundtrack was that the singer didn’t sound British enough. Other than that I thought it fit well with how it was described. It is not supposed to be upbeat. It is supposed to be sad and depressing. After all, it is a dirge.

i’m so fucking excited for this, it looks superb from the trailers and if it’s the entirety of the episode then it means we’ll get a good chunk of Sansa and Cersei in her room and a proper Sansa/Sandor moment.
Also that picture is gorgeous and Sansa looks a lot like Cersei there with her hair down and the pose.
Mirri MazQuote Reply
I think you’re missing some of the big points of that event. The main thing was that it was a random kingsguard member who had never before shown inclinations of hating Tyrion or working for Cercsei, but then out of the blue tries to cut Tyrion’s head in half, and Tyrion’s only saved by his very odd and generally useless squire. Pod hasn’t had much to do, but he has more to do later on and at least him saving Tyrion makes sense, not crazy-incest teen whose being blackmailed into spying against the woman he loves. Don’t really see why he’d save Tyrion, Lancel should hate the guy.
Plus it’d cut the scene where Lancel complains to the queen and she smashes him in his wound and almost kills him. I liked that scene.

MRRQuote Reply
Didn’t know this was going to be an extra-long ep, that’s cool. (How long was the premiere? That was the last time we saw every single plot thread in a single episode, I believe…) I actually think they could trim Jaime/Brienne and Bran entirely from the episode if they had to; their stories have reached a natural pausing point for the time being. (Since I doubt Winterfell’s going to be burned down next week, there’s not really anything for Bran to do. And while watching Jaime and Brienne is always going to be entertaining, there’s no natural “climactic” element to their story.) Arya is obviously going to be there, since the episode’s called “Valar Morghulis”, and they’re probably going to do something with Theon to conclude his arc this season. Cat and Robb’s situation needs some kind of temporary resolution, but yeah, it could be done in a scene.
I’m actually guessing that tonight’s episode ends with Tyrion taking an axe to the face (and all the non-book readers going, “ARRRRGH!!!”), then we’ll have a quick scene of Tyrion waking up and surveying the damage in the finale, but that’ll be all for now. Likewise, there may be a short scene of Davos post-shipwreck. We might also check in on Cersei and Sansa.
But you’re right, with any luck the bulk of the episode will be devoted to Dany and Jon.

And I think you are missing the same thing that Tyrion in the books missed: there is NO EVIDENCE that Cersei was the one who tried to have him killed. GRRM NEVER tells us who was behind it. Tyrion assumes it is Cersei, but even our seeing inside Cersei’s head does not confirm it.
Who else? Littlefinger (unlikely), Tywin (unlikely), and — above all — Joffrey (the OTHER distinct possibility that Tyrion ignores). Indeed, direct and unsubtle is EXACTLY Joff’s style — remember Bran? And in the TV series — frankly — Joffrey calling for his own Kingsguard to make the hit makes a lot more sense, too. Joff does not like his Uncle at all and would be HAPPY to see him dead.

I predict complaints from me (and others) about a lack of grandiosity. That might seem unfair to a tv-show, but if it looks like about 100 vs 100 people, then it would be a disappointment. And I saw nothing in the previews to ease my worries. I don’t need anything of a LOTR scale at all, just some (well, many) added CGI soldiers in the background in a couple of shots.
I also predict a complaint from myself of a butchering/omittment of the Sandor/Sansa scene. Man! If they fuck us SanSanfans (not a shipper myself, just a fan) over AGAIN I’d be pretty pissed.

i’ve read people thinking that photo is from a deleted scene from episode 3, cause she is wearing a grey dress and tonight she’ll wear another gown. i’m not sure if you meant that that pic may be from tonight and him threatening to kill her if she doesn’t sing for him, but i think they did leave that scene for sansa’s bedroom rather than on the serpentine steps like in the pic cause of a little momemt in the preview where sansa is sitting in her room and turns around towards the door… so i’m guessing sandor will go to her rooms and she’ll already be there, unlike in the books :)

I agree, the important thing is that they manage to turn the tide of the battle, like in the book. This change will also make it more interesting for us who have read the books. I’m was also hoping they show Tyrion’s post-battle scar, but they probably won’t. They will down play it like they have with all the characters that possess disfigurements.
SkywalkerIsDeadQuote Reply
It is for that very reason that I suspect it will be as long-lasting as his last field wound at the battle of the Greenkfork.
It isn’t really necessary for the story, it adds to make-up complexity and all it will do is make some book readers happy — while some others will complain about why half his nose isn’t CGI’d out in every scene Tyrion is in.
Moreover — and most of all — the extra make-up will just end up pissing off their #1 actor. To what end?
No end. It’s not going to wind up as a permanent scar.
Steel_WindQuote Reply
May I introduce you to 90-something-year-old Lord Walder Frey and his newest wife, FIFTEEN-year-old Joyeuse Erenford? Compared to them, the age difference between Sansa and Sandor doesn’t seem so big, now does it? And by Westerosi standards, she is a woman, fit to be wedded and bedded. Also, did you make this same argument against Dany and Drogo? No? Then why are you making it now?
ETA: 15 minutes!
wargsareawesomeQuote Reply
I’m no purist, but the scar is pretty important to Tyrion’s character. It’s a constant reminder of his family and his past that he can’t escape. I don’t care if it’s a full-on missing nose, but he needs SOMETHING to remind him when he’s halfway across the world.
Morgan KingQuote Reply
Well, they didn’t give him different colored contacts for the eyes and he’s not an ugly cretin like the Tyrion in the book, so perhaps they’ll downplay any facial scars or injuries so Dinklalge doesn’t have to spend 12 hours in the makeup trailer every day? One has to be practical, but I would bet there will be some lasting damage that will stick with him.

Right…but isn’t that supposed to be a really gross and repulsive relationship? Not a very strong argument to compare your favorite couple to one of the nastiest ones in the series.

Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
scaragh,
True, but the point I was trying to make was that Sansan is actually one of the less objectionable couples in the series. And that if he wants relationships that are acceptable by modern-day standards, he is reading the wrong series! For comparison purposes, I pointed out a more accepted pairing (both in-universe and out) in Dany/Drogo.
wargsareawesomeQuote Reply
scaragh,
Yep. Even in Westeros, a 75-year age difference raises some eyebrows.
As for Sansan, that’s as about as idiotic and inappropriate a romantic pairing as I can think of.
Richard WeetabixQuote Reply
Cannot wait for this to air….. I know the show doesn’t have the budget to do so, but this part in the book puts Helm’s Deep to shame

Megan,
A ‘rapey bit’ is also something that Sansan does not have, so if anything it should be more acceptable than Dany/Drogo.

JQuote Reply
Megan,
we also see to some extent sansa and sandor’s relationship going beyond the rapey bit i think you are refering to, with sansa comparing him to almost every man she knows, feeling resentful he only took a song and a kiss and left her nothing but a bloody cloak, imagining a kiss between them that didn’t happen, dreaming of him, wondering if she wasn’t wise at not going away with him…
clearly she isn’t in love with him, but i’ve never seen her feeling hate towards him,

Apart from being an arranged marriage (those still happen to this day) there was nothing “odd” about it. Especially in the book, where Drogo’s repetition of “no?” led to Dany saying “yes” and guiding his hand.

No Chain?! Was one of the coolest strategic maneuvers by Tyrion…. And they left it out!
So far, though: loved the Bronn/Tyrion bromance in full bloom.
Ooooh the Hound almost danced with Bronn before the battle….
The wildfire was cool… But for some reason I didn’t think of it as a flammable liquid, that had had to be lit…. I imagined it as LIQUID FLAME!
I wanna see The Hound strangle that guy with his own guts! Woah The
Hound just said FUCK THE KING!? This is heavy duty!
Given the constraints of the budget, blahblahblah… I am still loving this

Cersei sitting on the Iron Throne? With Tommen on her knee? Need to examine that last couple of scenes…. Weirdly reminiscent if Lysa Aren sitting in the Eyrie with Robert on her knee (and at her teet).
And awesome effect slicing open Tyrion’s face… The swelling around the wound… Along with the guy getting the top half of his head sliced off just before…. WOW!

That’ll do, HBO. That’ll do.
best hour of television I ever saw in my life.
Also, as a historical re-enactor I was hella impressed with their depiction of medeival style warfare.
Lena Headey should get all the awards. All of them. ’cause everyone already knows that Dinklage is awesome.
Nothing made me feel as sorry for Sansa as her having to put up with hilariously bad womanly advice from drunken Cersei.
Unrelated…but why is the show making me love Shae? Damn. Thanks HBO.
That is going to hurt like a kick to the face when…well…just nevermind. We won’t mention that plot yet.

A+ Episode. Given that D&D had to go hat in hand to HBO to get the extra money for this episode I hope that not only do they feel the money was well-spent but that they’ll loosen up a bit more next season. Although I’d be happier if they’d maybe loosen up and give them 2 more episodes per season.
Wildfire was better than I would have believed. Watching the Hound try to muscle his way through his terror at the uncontrolled fires was sublime. My heart went out to Sansa for the first time tonight, Sophie really nailed that feeling of the bird in her velvet trap. The battle on the beach was epic and bloody. This is probably the only time I’ll root for Shae. And Tyrion’s observation of Stannis’ reinforcements was priceless.
If only more television were this good. Bravo, D&D.

The Hound and Bronn ALMOST mixed up but… just when they were about to go at it, yup, the bells.
Cersei ALMOST got a little too much info for Shae’s safety but… just when she was about to ask that crucial question, yup, interrupted again. And then, along comes Tywin! Well I think he and Shae will get along just fine! ;-)
