Also, love the wizard shirt.

Totally agree with your Irri comment. It truly pisses me off that they killed her off, with most of Dany’s Khalasar it seems, in favor of the white girl who died in the books. I did love a lot about this episode, but I really question D&D’s decision on Dany’s posse.

What upsets me most about the Irri death is the absence of eye candy. Amrita, you will be missed! :-( The Irri death was more surprising and upsetting than the Dragon theft for me.
Otherwise it seems like Doreah was destined to take over many of Irris future scenes, once she survived the red waste.

jorah and doreah are both mysteriously absent from the bloodbath. it cant be jorah because his betrayal comes later. seeing as doreahs storyline has unlimited possibilities as she is supposed to already be dead it could be her. if it was pyat pree why hide that it was him if hes the obvious suspect. i saw no blue lips in that scene and the fact they remained hidden from us surely indicates a “surprise factor”
glennQuote Reply
Fire And Blood,
I’ve got a good TV, and I paid a lot of attention to that scene because I have a different theory entirely. I saw no blue, or beard. They purposely didn’t give you any tells on who it was carrying the dragons, so that we would speculate. I dont even know if we should be looking so closely at the actual person carrying the baskets, because that could have been a stunt person filling in the place of another actor, to throw everyone off (and prevent whoever it’s supposed to be from turning an ankle on those steps.)
That was the only part of TDR that fell flat for me, because it’s definitely not a forgone conclusion that that was Pyatt Pree. Other than that, good video! Thanks for injecting more humor into these. I like that they’re more fun now than just functional recaps.

My theory, Doreah had something to do with it. As people say she’s dead already, so why not use her in this instance? The dragons love her remember? So maybe she was able to coax the dragons into the new cages and hand them off to whomever made her betray Dany. Xaro? Pyat Pree? Spice King?
I assume D & D want Dany to have less allies than before, to drive home the situation that she really is desperate. Perhaps this is because by the end of season 2/early season 3 they are making away for more allies ie: a certain former knight of the King’s Guard?
But I am irked at the graceless exit of Irri. Did Amrita have some falling out with the producers? Maybe Doreah poisoned her?
PS: On a completely shallow note, guess we’re not getting that Irri/Doreah/Dany menage a trois from ASOS? = Sad Josh.

This is in line with what I thought, too. Dany sent her off to whore her self around for info. What if Doreah got herself in a spot, or got wind of an opportunity elsewhere? Since she’s not supposed to be alive in the books, we really have no established personality patterns for her character. She could do anything, at this point.

Isn’t it great that we’re all speculating on what’s going on? I think it is.
And THAT’S the beauty of D&D making the slight changes from the books! If they went strictly “by the book” we would not even be having these conversations, and frankly, we may even be a little bored.
I applaud what D&D has done. It’s made it SO much more interesting to watch (for me, anyway). Sure, not every change has been perfect, but not everything I do in life is perfect either, so I can’t really criticize.
I’m loving this show.

Only thing I disagree with is the Littlefinger teleportation comment. Scenes in the show aren’t shot with the assumption the viewer needs to assume its a minute by minute timeline. Between scenes in even the same episode it’s easy enough to just imagine a week or so went by. I don’t know what the big deal is…
It does suck that Irri is dead. I thought from a scene in a previous episode that D&D were going to use Irri and Dorea’s arguments to show the viewer Dany’s internal struggle of identity.
Only good thing with these deaths is by killing off some of the already huge cast we now have some room for new characters.
Greybeard
Strong Belwas
Ramsey Snow
Meera Reed
And more I didn’t mention. So I know it sucks, I also really liked Irri, but D&D are in a tight fix and can’t carry all the characters from season to season unless needed by their importance.
Just my thought on the matter.
ArthurQuote Reply
Lex,
I always say King of the North too. I think it is a more accurate discription lol. When Stannis goes to The Wall, people can call him “King in the North”, because it references his location. But they can never call him “King of the North”, because that references the location of his dominion. =P.
So bite me! Heh…
Yes I know GRRM says “in”…

Well obviously the warlocks have taken the dragons, she’ll go to THOTU and .cause havok inside while recovering them… maybe set all on fire and she walking out of it unharmed so people will gain some respect for her when they see her powers in action
I mean it doesn’t change much, just adds a cliffhanger for the last episode
And regarding Jon, well, I agree it was a pretty dumb scene, as its hard to lose someone dressed in black on a glacier…wich, now that I think about it, also applies to the wildling lookout; how the hell did the blackies approached them without being noticed? O well, it’s a shame the norwegian vikings went all Rapa Nui on the island and cut all the trees off…I just imagine it with the trees around them and all makes much more sense :)
But I don’t think tha changes things much either, I guess the wildlings that were not burned will revive, attack them,Quorin we’ll come to the rescue, she’ll escape in the confusion and all will be like the book after that, Quorin vs Jon fight and all..I really looking forward to that fight
Pau SorianoQuote Reply
Arthur,
But King IN the North has a different meaning, a much more interesting one. It implies that he doesn’t even recognize the authority of King’s Landing. Robb isn’t simply the king OF the northern part of the Westeros. He is THE king in the north, the only one they recognize. To the northmen, the north is all that matters… and Robb is THE king.
I think it’s a deliberate and very interesting semantic choice by GRRM. King OF the North just sounds common and boring by comparison. A step down, a demotion (more like Warden of the North).

Anyone ever see the movie ‘The Eagle’? I think it’s where GRRM got his idea of The Wall… From Roman history.
Rome built a wall like this in Europe. The land beyond the wall was considered uncivilized and the people (Celtic tribes) were considered barbarians (and compared to Rome they were).
It’s funny because when me and my dad watched it we immediately thought of ASOIAF and GRRMs Wall. Also, I am English so the Romans considered my anchesters barbarians (Wildlings).
It’s a Jon Snow story with a twist.

Littlefingers travels are just strange to watch. In 2 (or 3?) he goes from KL to Renly, from Renly to Harrenhal. Catelyn’s travels are superspeedy too, but I believe she went away in episode 1 or 2 towards Renly. Then she suddenly is back at Robb’s camp in 1 episode.
I’m not bothered with these scenes because it’s simply impossible to give a proper scale to Westeros in only 10 episodes. But can you guys imagine it’ll take Bran 10-20 episodes to go from Winterfell to the Wall now?. On the flipside, this probably means D&D will skip a lot of travel from AFFC and ADWD.
KnurkQuote Reply
I always took the “King IN the North” to be a geographical reference, whereas “King OF the North” is a political one, because “the North” was one of the seven independent kingdoms that existed before Aegon the Conqueror united them into one. Torrhen Stark bent the knee and was demoted to “Warden of the North” (his was not the only demotion).
Robb allowed his bannermen to elevate his title back to king, which in and of itself was an act of sedition against the crown of Westeros.
The qualifier “IN the North” implies that the sedition is not limited to the borders of the administrative region of “the North”. Robb wants to add at least part of the Riverlands to that. If successful, the lands administered by the Night’s Watch (the Gift and the New Gift plus the Wall itself) would presumably be added to it by default. Robb doesn’t have his beady eye on the Iron Islands, he just wanted an alliance with Balon (who’s more interested in revenge).
The qualifier “OF the north” implies a more modest claim that does not include any part of the Riverlands nor the areas of the Night’s Watch.

In an earlier thread, darquemode published this screencap of the face of the cloaked man who took the dragons.
Please right-click (ctrl-click on a Mac) the above link and either open it in a new browser window of save it to your hard disk and open the file withyour favorite viewing program (Preview works well on a Mac).
Now, zoom in on the face.
Darquemode claims to have spotted a white beard, others have dismissed it as an illusion produced by the lens flare. IMHO, the evidence is inconclusive.
Now you claim that the man’s lips are blue. What little we can see of them is certainly dark. There might be a purple tinge. However, in this shot the sunlight was filtered through the cloak, which altered its spectral composition. The real color of the lips may differ substantially from the apparent one. IMHO, also inconclusive.
Perhaps it would be wise to focus on the clearest feature: the shape and size of the nostril.
WARNING: POSSIBLE TV SHOW SPOILER AHEAD!
Now, compare this to http://www.gameof-thrones.fr/portfolio/barristan-selmy/. Please open this URL in a separate tab or window.
IMHO, the curvature of the nostril outline is a good match. Unfortunately, the tip of the cloaked man’s nose appear to be a poor one. However, you would expect an almost perfectly lateral camera angle to hide a telltale vertical groove in the middle of the tip. The image resolution isn’t high enough to say if the silhouette of the nose ridge line is consistent with a bulbous tip.
A smoking schnoz? No, but perhaps darquemode’s hunch will yet be proven right.

SOAPBOX TIME: This show specifically avoids the mention of the passage of time. This is built into the very bones of the tale; even seasons aren’t measurable. Very rarely—if ever—do we hear days, weeks, or months specifically mentioned in relation to other events.
Sure, Littlefinger scooted his fanny from the Stormlands, over to Highgarden (presumably), past King’s Landing (avoiding Tyrion and his Machiavellian machinations) and north to the Riverlands, finally arriving at Harrenhal.
How long did that take, exactly? In between Littlefinger’s last scene in last week’s episode, the following happened: Tyrion discussed Renly’s death with Cersei (they’d gotten the raven by that time, obviously); Stannis took over Renly’s army; Tyrion arranged for his personal monopoly of wildfire; Theon sailed from Pyke for Torrhen Square and took it; Arya established herself as Tywin’s cupbearer and notched her first wish-kill; Bran sent Rodrik with men to retake Torrhen Square; the Fist of the First Men was reached by the Night’s Watch; Daenerys established herself comfortably in Qarth; Theon took Winterfell.
Only after all that does Littlefinger arrive at Harrenhal. The length of a one-hour episode, sure, but how long, really? Could have been half a bloody year. Christ, he could have taken a pleasure cruise there.
TurncloakQuote Reply
If it was Pree why hide him? The writers obviously want the fans and non-fans to wonder who took the Dragons, therefore this man’s believes it is someone other than Pree, or why the hooded figure. I understand that, what I said is that it’s strange to watch one person (or three if you count Cat and Brienne) being all over the place. I seriously doubt it that a warlock would carry the Dragons himself, after all they are a part of the ruling caste (Pyatt even a member of The Thirteen) in the city that is extremely class-divided.
I think that Warlocks did steal her Dragons, but only so they could bait her to the HotU on the guise that wise men inside could help her locate the thief or the Dragons themselves.
Also, “Theon is a douche”? Really, Simone? For a book reader that’s a very shallow observation. Even the non-readers by now got the picture of complexity of his character.

Must be Pyatt. Why would any other dragon thief take them to THotU?
PatDQuote Reply
How can you be certain they’re being taken to THotU at all? You don’t! All we actually saw was a tower on top of a hill. What if that tower isn’t the cloaked man’s destination?
What if it was either Xaro or the Spice King or the mystery woman with the face mask who napped the dragons? They all have their own reasons to do just that and, we know that at least the first two have the resources to pull it off.
What if one of the men Doreah was told to make happy decided to make a bold move?
What if any one of the above sent a small group of soldiers to try and steal them, only to be repelled by Jorah and a number of Dothraki guards? What if Jorah led what was left of the khalasaar in an hasty retreat, leaving the Dothraki dead behind because protecting the dragons was the top priority? What if the man in the white cloak is a friend of Jorah’s who took the dragons to a secret and/or defensible location?
And finally, what if Dany’s khalasaar decided to double-cross her? Ok, I’ll admit that one is extremely unlikely.
My point is that we have very little information to go on at this point. There are multiple theories on who sent soldiers to where the dragons where. We also have several intriguing theories regarding the identity of the cloaked man. Howver, let’s be honest: they’re all just theories and we just don’t know yet.
Nagga’s KinQuote Reply
Spice King’s role is that of a red herring, imo. I think Xaro has something to do with dragons’ abduction, mainly because he was turned down by Dany and also because he seems to have an agenda (letting her into the city in the first place and letting her stay after her refusal) … and also because Dany’s people were slain in his mansion (the mansion of “the richest man in Qarth”). That being said, I still think the dragons are being taken to THotU. Because that tower shown looks alot like that which rises in the opening sequence (the biggest structure of the Qarth animation) and just because of that, I think it’s important. And if it’s important, what else would it be?
It’s awesome to not know what’s about to happen. I appreciate the changes the producers made. :D

Arthur GRRM has stated that the wall and the Celts were his inspiration. However this is a fanstasy story and a simple 20ft wall keeping out barbarians wouldnt do. Hence the 700ft wall and the Others (white walkers) snarks and grumpkins.
