Casting News Rumors

Shireen cast

This looks close to confirmed, although not officially. Kerry Ingram, a young English actor from Warfield (fitting!), has tweeted about getting a role on Game of Thrones. Darq(uemode) at SpoilerTV has some more details:

Kerry recently won an Olivier Award for her role in the musical Matilda… and worked on the 2012 film Les Misérables (cast by Nina Gold).

Update: Confirmation of the role via BerkshireARTsAcademy. Award acceptance speech video here.

Hear Me Roar: It has to be for the role of Shireen, daughter of Stannis Baratheon. Kerry has a more than solid pedigree, and a definite Nina Gold connection, so now we are just waiting for a confirmation.

  • I hope it is her now…. and I hope HBO doesn’t scold her too much for tweeting out that she was cast! XD

I’m not sure she was prepared for a tweet to friends (?) would blow up like this, or ready for an overnight fandom like Thrones fans! I know, I know. oh, oh, oh!

  • Wow! Seeming legit casting info already? It’s about to be that time again, how exciting.

She is super-cute, but it doesn’t look like she has greyscale so there is no way this will work. ;)

  • darquemode,

Hope not … they were quick to make it public. Or rather, fandom sleuths, you in particular, made it so, as they would :)

  • Hear Me Roar,

I blame the insomnia….. and the excitement of the first role cast of Season 3!

    ETA:
Oh my gawds! That acceptance speech is adorable!

  • We have a proper star in our cast now, look at that! And I really had to laugh at that acceptance-speech, they are already giving speeches like the boring grown-ups!

    XenkanMonk will be delighted.

  • I am wordless. Nina Gold finds the perfect actor for every role. Even when there are some differences from the descriptions of the character in the book, and the actor/actress, they always turn out to be perfect for the show.

ETA: Let’s massfollow her on twitter.

  • They skipped the whole Storm’s End plotline so I doubt we’ll see Edric Storm unless the show plays it as if he had been at Dragonstone the entire time.

  • She looks exactly like I imagined, I wonder if they will introduce greyscale disease with her as it will play an important part later. And maybe she might also get her fool Patchface?

  • While we know that Shireen is being cast, do we know for sure that hers is the only role which might be filled by a girl of about this age? What about an even larger role, that of Missandei?

  • Madmage:

I hope they keep it, even if they have to hand wave how Stannis got Storm’s End. Good character development for both Davos and Stannis, and it’s not like they have a ton to do in S3. Not sure if you really need to cast Edric though.

  • Maester Tcost,

The arts academy for children which she attends tweets that she has been cast as Shireen.

It seems likely that Missandei will be included in the season 3 storyline as well, but no anouncement on that yet.

  • Omar Brown,

I would imagine so, on both counts. I think the main purpose of her character is to introduce greyscale to the readers, and as a clever way to get some more prophecy in the story through Patchface. That stuff aside, seeing how Stannis interacts with his family should make for some interesting television.

  • She’s adorable, and it’s really great to have another child actor in the production. I hope they give her some real scenes (not just here-and-theres like Tommen and Myrcella get), because I think Shireen as a character has the potential for some really emotional moments. Interested and curious to see how they do the greyscale!

  • Did Stannis even say two words to his daughter in the books? Haha, I’m wondering if there will be any dialogue between them. Curious what kind of father they will show Stannis to be.

  • Cuteness ALERT! Wish we had Patchface as well!

The only one i don’t want to be casted is Edric Storm. I want Gendry to be legimated afterwards :P

  • A king is murdered, Ned is executed, a massive war of 5 kings is started over “Baratheon, black of hair”, and they cast a blonde as Shireen?

I hope they give her a wig, hair dye can really damage a child’s hair.

  • I would honestly love it if she was cast as Meera Reed. Wouldn’t make much sense for the story, but the gatewatch here would be worth the changing of a plot arc that I never really cared for.

  • Meg,

He doesn’t, but there’s a lot of Stannis that we don’t see, since he really only has one POV character with him on Dragonstone, and Davos obviously doesn’t spend ALL of his time with Stannis. I hope we get a scene between Stephen and Kerry, for sure.

  • I’m really surprised they cast her even after the announcement a little while back

she doesn’t have that big of an important role, but then maybe she becomes important in the later books, so who know.s

  • Meg,

Although i can see them going with Stan being him “lovely self” towards Shireen (and Davos being the father figure), I would prefer it if they use their scenes together to show the non dick-ish side of Stan that Davos sees.

  • Remaal,
The hairstylists said they used “a concoction of watercolors” for Sophie Turner’s hair when she first came on as a young girl, so if not a wig I believe they’ll find a way to minimize the effect to Kerry’s hair.

It does brought to my attention though… that Renly Baratheon WASN’T black of hair! Impostor!

  • Meg: Haha, I’m wondering if there will be any dialogue between them. Curious what kind of father they will show Stannis to be.

I imagine he’ll talk to her in the same hard matter-of-fact voice he always uses. Which could be somewhat amusing.

  • sjwenings: I imagine he’ll talk to her in the same hard matter-of-fact voice he always uses. Which could be somewhat amusing.

I’m imagining Selyse telling him to be a more dutiful father and him making the face he did in Blackwater during the “Hundreds will die…thousands” exchange.

  • She does confirm herself thats it’s for the role of Shireen.

    Sara ‏@Zajkisen
@kerrywerryberry Congrats on the role! I’m guessing Shireen. :-)

    Kerry Ingram ‏@kerrywerryberry
    @Zajkisen thank you and yes x :0)

  • Josh Parker: Huh? If he wasn’t black of hair, neither was Robert and neither is Stannis.

His hair in S2 is brown under bright light, though certainly dark enough to not attract immediate attention. Stannis’ is black (and thin), and Robert’s is not totally black but quite excused by his grey hairs.

  • In this show Baratheon Black means Westerosi Black, which = brown.
And Lannister Blonde = brown too.

  • Josh Parker: Huh? If he wasn’t black of hair, neither was Robert and neither is Stannis.

Too be fair, Stannis doesn’t really have much hair anyway (on the show)

  • Oh she’s so sweet. Just as I had hoped. I always pictured an adorable little girl, so sad and innocent, trapped in such a horrible loveless household with only Patchface as a friend.

Best wishes, Miss Ingram, and welcome to the Game.

  • This is great. In fact, I thought one of the major reasons they hadn’t cast Shireen or the Reeds for that matter was the difficulty of finding children that would work at the level they needed. They said casting the Stark children had been by far the hardest casting project of the first season. These roles are smaller but if they don’t work they’ll stick out like sore thumbs. But it looks like Kerry Ingram will do just fine.

    Welcome to the cast Kerry!

PS. I think this means greyscale is too important not to include after all. I wonder if we’ll get Jon Connington then? And maybe something about the origins of greyscale. My favorite fan theory is it’s a magical bioweapon against dragons that got out of hand and mutated, perhaps cooked up by the maesters. That would partly explain the stone dragons on Dragonstone, perhaps they weren’t carved but petrified.

  • Fantastic. Shireen may or may not end up being very important, but the character is a wonderfully nice touch to the story. She (and Patchface) really help flesh out Stannis and Dragonstone quite a bit. I’d love to see her play a larger role, frankly.

  • As the legitimate heir to the throne, Shireen is a pretty important part to cast… and I have a “feeling” her character will become important in later books (the person who ends up married to her, after all, will be legitimized as the rightful king).

  • I’m so happy Shireen has been cast. I look forward to seeing her interact with Stannis and hopefully Patchface!!

  • Slightly OT, but if they’re fleshing out Dragonstone, I hope we’ll get Pylos showing up as Cressen’s replacementhis teaching Davos to read is fairly important if I recall it right. If there’s no Edric, then Davos & Shireen might become classmates – that could be good for comic relief :D

  • Stannis Baratheon:
    Macha,

You mean, “I bet Princess Shireen’s grammar is impeccable.”

Of course. My apologies, Your Grace.

    Nick Larter,

Going by audition rumours, Shireen could be the one to teach Davos how to read. I doubt they’ll add Pylos’ character just for that purpose alone. I do wonder if they’ll cast Edric Storm though.

  • Ingemar Svensson,

That would be supercool! Gotta admit Tim Minchin doesn’t look like the Tom o’ Sevens of my mind, but still, he’s a big favorite of mine so I’d love it. :D

  • Josh Parker: Huh? If he wasn’t black of hair, neither was Robert and neither is Stannis.

Black hair is different in Westeros, it’s a spectrum extending to dark brown. The same is true of Westerosi blonde, includes light brown. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  • John: would honestly love it if she was cast as Meera Reed. Wouldn’t make much sense for the story, but the gatewatch here would be worth the changing of a plot arc that I never really cared for.

I had the same thought. Yes, she is young but so isn’t Bran & it would make their “romance” more believable than the book crush Bran has going. Besides, aging Meera down is really not a big change at all.

  • Awww! What a little sweetheart and she’s a sweet little singer. Sing Stannis a song Shireen. :)

Shireen and Davos as school mates would be a fantastic idea!

  • Darth Valyria:
Wow! Seeming legit casting info already? It’s about to be that time again, how exciting.

She is super-cute, but it doesn’t look like she has greyscale so there is no way this will work. ;)

I didn’t catch your smiley for a second and lost all hope

  • Yes, yes, yes! I love her! She is heartbreakingly cute. I’m freaking out right now. They actually cast Shireen. Huzzah! She is so perfect. The future Queen of the Seven Kingdoms right here!

  • I’ll be honest I really ain’t that bothered about this character, she really doesn’t serve much of a purpose IMO.

  • The Kingslayer: I’ll be honest I really ain’t that bothered about this character, she really doesn’t serve much of a purpose IMO.

Well, we don’t really know that yet, and D&D have more insight as to what’s coming in the story than anybody here. Like somebody said above, after ADWD you see how important grayscale is, and it’s introduced to us through Shireen.

Plus I also wonder if she’ll stand in for Edric Storm in some way. After all, she has king’s blood too, would make that plotline even more twisted with Stannis’ own daughter involved….

  • Steven Swanson,

I really hope not. I can’t imagine Stannis ever being okay with killing his only child/heir. It doesn’t jive with the Stannis of the books, who’s mentioned several times that he’s pursuing his claim for Shireen as much as himself. I know it’s an adaptation, but I think that would be a pretty big misreading of the character.

  • Tomer Segal:
Shireen casting looks pretty useless to me, I don’t see why they have the need to include her in the TV series.

Shireen is necessary to introduce greyscale into the story. And it is entirely likely that she plays some role in future books. Remember that Dan and Dave have information about the future books in the series from GRRM and we don’t.

  • I’m glad Shireen has been included in the show. What a cute little girl!

I wonder how they will handle the greyscale?

Keep in mind- this girl has dreamed of dragons as long as she can remember. I think GRRM has big plans for her in the 2 final novels.

Shireen is Dany’s distant cousin after all and Jon Snow as well if R+L=Jon Snow is true. Shireen might have a connection to the dragons……….It’s something to keep in mind

  • J: Steven Swanson, I really hope not. I can’t imagine Stannis ever being okay with killing his only child/heir. I was thinking more in terms of the leeching.

  • Great child actor, very excited about her choice. I don’t imagine Shireen will have a lot of scenes but who knows. Shireen has a cute scene with Davos that I hope we’ll get to see next season.

As for her hair, a wig is easy enough. If she has only a few scenes, they could probably get away with a temporary washout dye for her hair that wouldn’t be damaging.

  • J: Steven Swanson, Oh, I figured the biggest thing with Edric Storm is the sacrifice or not to sacrifice plot.

It is but they’re related, from what I remember one is the subtitute for the other because Stannis wants to avoid that if possible.

  • Good news, everyone! Can’t wait to see her in full makeup!

    Now,
PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE. PATCHFACE.

“Fool’s blood, king’s blood, blood on the maiden’s thigh, but chains for the guests and chains for the bridegroom, aye aye aye.”

  • Macha: Stannis Baratheon:

Could be – the audition had her bringing him a book in the dungeon right?

  • Welcome to the GoT family Kerry! also congratulations for your Olivier award, well deserved. Hopefully your casting for Shireen means an even larger role for the Trueborn Heir to the Iron Throne, because Nina and D&D would not waste a role on such a strong, albeit young actor. It will be great watching you grow up, because if everything works out you will be 18-19 when the show runs its course, besides an ever expanding role.

  • It’s a bit ridiculous how excited I am for this character, but I really am. I found Stannis’s family fascinating, and Shireen is a bit of a mystery still.

I imagine they want to keep Stannis in the picture as much as they have screentime for, so it makes sense to cast the characters who really beef up his story and help his development.

  • Hmmm her casting implies Shireen’s character is much more important than we so far think.

Could she be the “false king” claimed in the prophecy? Still on the fence about the whole Aegon reveal as being true.

  • She’s a dead ringer for what I pictured while reading the books, minus the greyscale of course. Can’t wait to see her–she’s adorable and looks like a great young actress.

  • Langkard: Shireen is necessary to introduce greyscale into the story. And it is entirely likely that she plays some role in future books.Remember that Dan and Dave have information about the future books in the series from GRRM and we don’t.

You don’t need a cast to introdouce greyscale, do you? theres plenty of other ways to do so.

    @Josh Parker,
I’m around the middle of the first part of aDwD(hebrew version). If youre talking about falling of the boat then yes, I read that.

  • Nick Larter: Could be – the audition had her bringing him a book in the dungeon right?

Correct, at least that is what was rumoured.

andrea: oh my, I’m notweepy (or a crybaby?), but that could be a huge test for me.

Huge test? HA! I’m already past that stage! :) I got teary eyed numerous times this past season. Crybaby and proud of it!
I think having these two together would be even more poignant considering Davos has just lost his son and Shireen never really had a father figure truly present in her life.

  • I wish they’d brought the character in sooner, but I am delighted they’re including her.

  • Macha:
I bet Shireen’s grammar is impeccable.

Nearly spit out my drink when I read that. Good one!

I think they’ll utilize Shireen as a way to humanize Stannis a bit more over the next few seasons. A lot of his good dialogue in aCoK was somewhat skipped over this season with the 10 episode format. Sadly, even with splitting the 3rd book in 2, I have a feeling that we’ll get a good deal of episodes that come off as rushed as more and more characters get introduced in the story.

  • Macha: I think having these two together would be even more poignant considering Davos has just lost his son and Shireen never really had a father figure truly present in her life.

exactly what I thought. I’m happy for you (I do like crybabys) but I must confess that I wasn´t close to tears not once this season.

  • They could have her actually catch greyscale during the show if they need some drama for Stannisland.

  • Damnit, I was hoping Melisandre stating in episode 2 that Selyse had not given Davos any children meant that SHireen would not be cast *SPOILER ALERT* because George had told David and Dan that at the end of book seven Shireen will not be sitting on the Iron THrone.

  • Madmage:

I’m with you on that, however if we think about it, Stannis’ character might have just been helped by the adaptation (I’m thinking mostly Blackwater). I’ve heard a lot of complaints (mostly on Tumblr) about his characterization, but let’s face it, ACoF establishes his character as a highly determined player, and that’s about it. A lot of great dialogue (from other characters as well) was and will be cut, some of it might be re-worked for future scenes, who knows. I definitely wouldn’t want to be on D&D’s shoes, there’s so much good material to work with, and so little space for that on the show. Pretty hard to balance it all out. As you said, hopefully they’ll give the characters some room to breath this upcoming season.

  • Kneeling Knight:
Damnit, I was hoping Melisandre stating in episode 2 that Selyse had not given Davos any children…

Well, I surely hope Selyse didn’t give Davos any children, that would be quite the plot twist. ;)
