  • No mention of Stannis, Hope we get a short scene or two of the aftermath of Blackwater.

    So excited for this episode!!

  • Probably more excited about this episode than I was for Blackwater. What I’m not excited about is the long wait for season three.

  • For the non-bookreaders, the first statement of the episode description ended speculation if Tyrion survived or not

  • “Arya receives a gift from Jaqen”

Kind of a scary phrase for people who have read the books. :)

  • If I watch 12.8 seconds of this final episode each day, I should finish in time for the season 3 premiere. Time to ration #GameOfThrones.

  • Only a few more hours before I start contemplating how big a concussion i’d need to go unconcious for 10 months. This is terrible. :( By the time season 3 rolls around, i’ll probably have the series read another dozen times. This is gonna kill me.

But seriously can’t wait for all the stuff going to happen tonight. I want to know what the hell happened to Doreah. If she betrays Dany, I will scream “SHE TRUSTED YOU!!!!” at the television without a second thought, before breaking down into tears.

  • The Young Wolf:
A man hopes this isn’t the last we see of Jaqen H’ghar.

It shouldn’t be. Probably the last we’ll see of Tom Wlaschiha though, unfortunately.

  • ace,

I think most knows that Tyrion survived. It was only a slash of face…..not a split of the skull or anything (like all of Cleganes kills)…

Anyway super-psyched for this episode…as a reader of the books, I still have no idea how far they intent they will go in everyones story. Witch makes it very exciting!!!

  • I wonder what they’re going to do in the House of Undying

Probably Robb Stark/Grey Wind death vision, sure, but what about Rhaegar and Elia? Actors portraying them? Or just voices?

  • Think we will see Stannis and Mel tonight! Carice Van Houten said awhile back the episodes she is in this season, and the finale is one of them. I wonder if they’ll allude to Stannis going to the Wall? Or if they’ll save that for a big surprise?

    Can’t wait!!

  • Padraig O’Faolain,

He does have it, it just doesn’t glow all the time. It would be really hard to basically have to do a Lightsabre-lite effect every time Stannis has his sword out, so I assume they’ll just have it glow at certain points, like after someone is sacrificed to the flames or something.

  • It’s a good thing Bolton’s bastard is coming to sort Theon out and save Winterfell. Always nice to have a positive ending…

  • A woman hopes Jaqen will appear again, perhaps he should have his own spin-off show if not continuing? A woman is watching the marathon and anticipating a rousing finale!

  • Mrs. H’ghar:
A woman hopes Jaqen will appear again, perhaps he should have his own spin-off show if not continuing?

Better idea, make a hitman-style video game where you play as Jaqen H’ghar. That would probably be even better that the RPG they’re coming out with.

  • I can’t wait too see Ser Barristan again. It’ll be in the episode. It is known.

  • These days GoT has become my sinful activity in the middle of all the university exams. Bring it on! (secretly hoping for them to keep all the stuff in HotU)

  • GRRM should play Tormund Giantsbane. Also I wonder if they will show the dwarves ravishing the women in the HOTU

  • Andrew:

Since cryogenics is only a science in its infancy and doctors frown at people asking to be put into an induced coma just for a television series hiatus, I’ve decided the best way to pass the time is to read more. Re-reading ASoIaF will take a month or so. Then I think I might re-read all of the Malazan books. There. Only 7 more months to go! Er… maybe I should renew my library card. /facepalm

  • sunspear: Better idea, make a hitman-style video game where you play as Jaqen H’ghar. That would probably be even better that the RPG they’re coming out with.

A woman likes the way you think! Make it so!

  • OT: Great article on the second season of Game of Thrones, courtesy of the A.V. Club.

  • So how does everyone pronounce ‘Valar Morghulis’? Is it Val-are More-goo-lis?

  • On another note, what the eff? It feels like only yesterday Natalie Dormer was cast.
Oh well, it’s time like these one is happy to be living in Europe, I get to cling on to this season for one more day.

  • So I’m guessing most of the Jaqen H’ghar fans using his name (or a part of it) as their forum identity don’t know that the name is just part of an assumed identity.

  • Will we ge to see Arstan Whitebeard? Please!!!
What exactly will happen at Winterfell? The Bastard can’t take the castle since he isn’t cast yet! Or will it be Dagmer? (I don’t think so…)
Hope we get a glimpse of the White Walkers and the Wights...

    64mins, the longest yet!

  • Can’t believe it’s June, and that we’re already at the finale. Seriously, where did the last two months go?!?

  • Felix & Gotrek: GRRM should play Tormund Giantsbane.

GRRM should finish the effing series.

Danmire: I wonder what they’re going to do in the House of Undying

I have no high expectations for the HotU. I’m expecting the D&D version of the Reader’s Digest version. HotU in 2 minutes. FunHouse of the Undying, if you will.

  • Juan:

    64mins, the longest yet!

Sadly that 64 minutes includes the “Previously this season” montage at the start, but it’s still a nice, long episode.

  • ,

Not to worry, you’re not the only one who is putting off studying for finals in favor of GoT ; )

  • MRR:
So I’m guessing most of the Jaqen H’ghar fans using his name (or a part of it) as their forum identity don’t know that the name is just part of an assumed identity.

And how does a man or woman know what is the true identity? Is it important? Perhaps same name, other face, or same face – other name, new face – new name, who is to say for sure which is true?

  • Mrs. H’ghar: And how does a man or woman know what is the true identity? Is it important? Perhaps same name, other face, or same face – other name, new face – new name, who is to say for sure which is true?

Is there a reason you removed my spoiler tags when you quoted me?

In any case, he fairly explicitly says that “Jaqen H’ghar must die” when he changes his identity, and what we learn later on in AFFC about the assumed identities of the Faceless Men suggests very strongly that there would be nothing “true” about any identity they assume.

  • MRR,

All the previous 50-something min episodes did too. They include the credits and the intro too. It still doesn’t add up to a full hour of Game of Thrones.

  • Juan:

Who cares? It’s still an extra ten minutes of GoT!

Yeah, I know – I’m just sad that precious minutes will have to be wasted on a summary! I want 64 minutes of new! This week’s montage will probably also be especially long, since it’s the last episode of the season.

    Indeed. Just so. Bravo!

  • I’ve been looking forward to this night all week!!! Even though I know I have to work tomorrow, I have a GoT buddy in a coworker–we waste at LEAST an hour of the workday talking about the show.

Waiting until next year’s gonna kill me, man…

  • Andrew:
Only a few more hours before I start contemplating how big a concussion i’d need to go unconcious for 10 months. This is terrible. :( By the time season 3 rolls around, i’ll probably have the series read another dozen times. This is gonna kill me.

You could always read the “Dunk and Egg” short stories. That should keep you occupied for at least 3 days. :0P

  • I want to see if someone at KL tells Daddy Tywin that Arya Stark is missing. It should take him a milla-second to know who his cup bearere really was and order a raven sent to bring her to him….. Too late.

We will know how much of the season’s budget was spent on Blackwater by how extensive the HOTU is. I think it will not match our expectations, but I hope I am wrong.

  • I really do hope the house of the undying is as cool as black water, and BTW, what the hell is a manticore?

Here’s to the old squire making his appearance…

  • Langkard: I pronounce it Val-are More-gull-is

I always read it as Va-LAR More-Gool-is, with more emphasis on the ‘L’. I guess we’ll find out soon :)

  • Amsterpaul,

The manticore is a Persian legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a red lion, a human head with three rows of sharp teeth (like a shark), and a trumpet-like voice. Other aspects of the creature vary from story to story. It may be horned, winged, or both. The tail is that of either a dragon or a scorpion, and it may shoot poisonous spines to either paralyze or kill its victims. It devours its prey whole and leaves no clothes, bones, or possessions of the prey behind.

Though we don’t know what appearance GRRM chose to use for ASoIaF manticores, it is clear that they do not use their poison to paralyze their victims, but rather to kill them (very painfully).

In short, a manticore is something to avoid at all costs.

  • Ser Brynden Tulley:
Why does anyone care about Doreah?

Because, in the books, she dies. In the show, however, she did not. We are assuming that the kept her alive for a reason.

  • wargsareawesome:
    SillyMammo,

I would love to read the Dunk & Egg stories… if I could actually get my hands on a copy of them!

Check your local library, that’s where I found copies of the anthologies containing the first two stories. And I bought the third one, Warriors, when it came out, which has some other excellent stories included as well.

  • Can`t wait to see the HOTU sequence. I have a feeling it will be something special.
Among other things I am pretty sure we will get to see Drogo and Rhaego . I won`t say anymore but it will be damn cool for sure. It is known.
I wonder will the little guy have his wings? Jeez, I hope so that would be awesome.

  • Amsterpaul:
I have read my books to dust. Seriously HOTU dusty

Join the club! Some of my favorite books (like Lord of the Rings), I’m on my third or fourth copy of!

  • Really excited/nervous for House of the Undying. I simultaneously have realistically low and hopefully high expectations.

I’m really hoping (pipedream-level hoping) for Rhaegar and Elia, some hint of RW, some hint of R+L=J, and the Undying Ones. On a more practical level, I hope we can see Viserys, Drogo, and Irri’s death scene. Realistically, I’m expecting just a creepy kind of tower and some weird hijinks from Pyat Pree.

In any event, there better be some damn dragon fire.

    And please give us Arstan!

  • Lina,

I am hoping for Arstan as well, but I doubt we will get him yet, simply because he shows up as Strong Belwas’ “squire”, and IIRC, Belwas has not yet been cast…

  • Mike Chair,

Well the song called HotU on the soundtrack is nearly 6 minutes long so my hopes have been raised. Though I doubt we will get all the visions and prophecies and just the complete insanity that the house of the undying was, might be my favorite chapter in the whole series…

  • So excited for tonight!

OT, I have had AVG threat detected 3 times now when accessing WIC home page. I assume it is one of the ads setting off AVG. Has anyone else been experiencing this?

  • Michael Harper,

Yes, well, I think Strong Belwas is a bigger deal than Ser Dontos… but MAYBE they kept it secret…

ETA: See, thinking positive (or at least attempting to)

  • andrea: oh, I have a feeling you know something, TF

Oh yes precious…yes TF knows things alright. Strange and wonderfull thingses.

  • Zach Zeeman: Well the song called HotU on the soundtrack is nearly 6 minutes long so my hopes have been raised.

I hope you’re right. And hope is okay. Hope is good. Expectations are different. I expect, based upon past experience with the series (particularly anything of the Dany storyline) that it will be much abridged.

  • My completely unrealistic hope is that the Season 1 character will be Old Nan. That D &D in their infinite wisdom, saw fit to shoot her death scene and saved it just in case….. OK REALLY crazy, but I still wish we got to see Bran reacting to it….

  • Strong Belwas is a minor character that could be replaced. Jorah or Arsten can take his place as a fighter . The signs are too powerful that we will see Arsten. The actor joins twitter, grows his beard, Jaime mentions his name before killing his cousin. how else will u wrap up Dany’s arc this season than having her rescued by Arsten and killing Pyat Pree?

  • wargsareawesome,

I am afraid they are going to change the whole Arstan as Squire for Belwas thing and because having Barristan be in disguise doesn’t really work as well for a TV audience since everyone would know who it is. And without barristan the bold as Belwas squire I really hope Strong Belwas doesn’t get the axe…

  • Impi,

Well since the actress who played old nan passed away I really doubt it… Which is why she wasn’t used this year at all or in the DVD extras, because the only way those telling of the histories of Westeros could have been cooler was if Old Nan was the storyteller…

  • Darthzombie,

I don’t know. Selmy’s arrival hasn’t been that greatly foreshadowed, at least not as much as it was in the books. Plus, his reputation has been majorly downgraded in the first season, so people might not remember him as well.

  • wargsareawesome,

They have been translated into Graphic Novellas but they all started out first as short stories/Novellas. I know there is one more in the Dunk and Egg tale that George is writing and then they are going to release all of them as a collection.

  • sunspear,

I think that is true for the casual viewer but even serious nonreader viewers would know it was the same actor. As I am sure people like Alan Sepinwall in his blog would point out that we have seen that actor before even if he doesn’t quite look the same. And my one friend who hasn’t read the series remembers Barristan and really hopes we get more of him…

  • The dunk and egg stories are short stories originally, but they are making graphic novellas of them. George did not write the adaptation, but he seemed pretty involved. Not the same, though.

Manticore in Martin’s world seems to be another word for deadly scorpion.

  • John-Michael Lelievre: Vay-lar More-goo-lis here.

We have no idea what the phonetic structure of High Valyrian is, how the letters map to sounds. The simplest answer is to use plain Latin values for each letter, and to ignore Martin’s silly h’s that he soh likes to stick all ovher the place in his whords. But there are lhots of other possibhilities.

There’s also a question of where the stress falls on each word, if it does. It might even use tonal/pitch accent like Ancient Greek or various Asian languages even today. Imagine the minor third descending sing-song of a child’s “JOHNny, come out and PLA-ay” applied to the phrase.

Ignoring pitches but using stress, here are three reasonable possibilities:

       •  Latin-like: [ˈvalar ˈmorgulis] with rolled r’s
       •  English-like: [ˈveɪlɑɹ mɔɹˈgʊləz]
       •  Exotic: [βɐˈlaɾ ˈmuʁχyɫɨʒ]

If it’s closer to the last one, that would explain why Jaqen had to make Arya repeat it so much, since a bunch of those sounds are really foreign-sounding to the naïve English-speaking (well, -hearing) ear, and I’m sure poor Arya would have a terrible time with them.

My guess is that it will be one of the first two, though.

    We’ll find out soon enough.

Was it really “greatly foreshadowed” in the books? I honestly don’t recall that it was.

It’s true that he was strangely removed from the Small Council, which downgrades his rep.

  • Darthzombie:

He has more than one planned. The next one is done or just about and will appear in an anthology he is editing that focuses on women. I forget the name. But there’s more after that, I believe, and very well could be intended to take us all the way to Egg’s coronation or even Summerhall.

  • 322 days until April 21, 2013 (Estimated premier) – Plenty of time to re-watch Episodes 1 – 20.

    Here’s hoping for 3 horn’s tonight.

  • Turncloak,

also we must not forget that the old squire is on the HBO site under the King on the Iron Throne. HE will be there are will eclipse Stannis as the BAMF of the season.

  • I was hoping for the season finale Game of Thrones would finally hit 4m viewers but considering it is competing with both the NBA playoffs and the MTV Awards I doubt it.

  • Epicurean: Was it greatly foreshadowed in the books.I honestly don’t recall that.

It’s true that he was strangely removed from the Small Council, which downgrades his rep.

Every non-book reader I know has wondered where Selmy is at some point. My dad still laments he’s missing. I think the show made him much more memorable — the visualization of his quitting, his sort of quiet dignity in the other scenes really seemed to make an imprint with people.

  • andrea,

Off to bed. Enjoy the show everyone. Its a long wait till the next episode. I think I will stay off line till after the show airs here ( NI ) tomorrow night.

  • Come on people, use spoiler tags! there are non-readers here (I would assume)

  • Epicurean: Was it really “greatly foreshadowed” in the books?I honestly don’t recall that it was.

It’s true that he was strangely removed from the Small Council, which downgrades his rep.

Well, Tyrion mentions how stupid it was to dismiss him because of his reputation. Plus, Renly talks says something along the lines of “Joffrey dismissed him. He must have gone to serve some King. He isn’t with me, he isn’t with your son, so where else could he go?”

  • Oh to be born on the other side of the Atlantic!!!!

Spare a thought for us lost souls far to the east………

  • I t may be ten months until we get new shows but here are a few things we can get accomplished until then:

Message GRRM to fiinsh tWoW everyday until the season 3 premier.

Check this sight daily to see who is Cast as Meera Reed.

Start weaving my sigil tapestry for next year premier party. (Hear me Roar M-n-Fers)

Contact Science channel to find out probable causes of such severe climatic change.( I am still convinced that their planet has a 70 degree tilt and a really elliptical orbit.)

Watch my DVR burn out and lose the first two seasons!

  • OK, off to watch Blackwater one more time before the final episode. See you on the other side!

  • I have been listening to “No Church in the Wild” (Jay Z & Kanye West) on loop today, which, for some reason, I find to be highly evocative of Game of Thrones. Could this be the reason? I wonder…

    “Human beings in a mob.
    What’s a mob to a king?
    What’s a king to a god?
    What’s a god to a non-believer, who don’t believe in anything?
Will he make it out alive? All right, all right…
    No church in the wild.”

And the answer: all men must die, but the worst ones will surely live.
It’s been one hell of a ride this season, and now come the summer, autumn, and yes, THE WINTER, of our discontent, awaiting the third season of the best show on television. *raises glass a-la Cersei* Enjoy!

  • JamesL: competing with both the NBA playoffs

    Okay, here’s my plan.

8:30 PM EST Celtics vs. Heat
8:59 Tune Safari bowser to Celtics Website to get real-time scores and stats.
    9:00 Valar Morghulis
10:10 Celtics vs. Heat and wic.net during the time outs.

  • Hassan Madkour:
    Amsterpaul,

as soon as I read Arstan Whitebeard I noticed the resesmblance in the name. but not until a few pages into ASOS have I put 2 and 2 together

It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure it out, possibly not until it was actually revealed.

  • lonas:
    iheartseverus,

That turned actually into a really cool song an video! thanks for sharing :-)

Cheers! I watched it a couple times, laughing out loud at myself channeling Ayra when his friend says ‘The Starks are not your friends…’ and I’m like ‘LIAR!!

  • Who wants to see an army of wildings with giants and mammoths? I do! Although they might easily leave that until next season. Would be cool if that was the very last scene through.

My one disappointment is going to come when Dagmer and Reek/Ramsay are lumped into one, but heck, I think everything that’s coming during the finale will more than make up for it!

  • I hope they keep in that the first door on the right is the last door on the left

  • Mrs. H’ghar: A woman used the quote button as always. Apologies for that, perhaps a mod can fix this in the above post that a woman cannot edit further?

Weird; when I used the quote button to quote you, the spoiler tags stayed in. Oh well – not a huge spoiler anyway, as it will probably become evident tonight to non-readers.

  • Mike Chair,

Hey, me too!!! Let’s hope the Celtics do better than the Sox (Gods be good, Bard was HORRID!) Any idea what was going on with him?

  • wargsareawesome,

    Bard? NO idea.

I’m hoping for a Doc Rivers pep talk that goes something like this:

“Those are brave men walking on our parquet. Let’s go kill them!”

  • “My one disappointment is going to come when”

Personally my one joy will be watching the inane and retarded Dagmer theories get sunk. I mean Jeez.

  • Valyrian Eyes:
    Epicurean,
Weren’t they talking about the 3rd season when they mentioned this?

Oh drat. I don’t know. Maybe. I thought it was somehow for the end of the 2nd season. That’s a lot more CGI money though.

  • I had honestly not considered actually seeing the Wildling army approaching….
I just assumed we would hear the horns and get reaction shots.

If we actually see the army in the last scene as the horn sounds…. THAT could very well rival last year’s end scene. Wow!

  • Well, it’s good to see Tyrion keeps his nose. Nice Shae-Tyrion moment, but pity fairy tales don’t last forever.

Plus Robb marrying Jeyne with prior discussion with Cat is an interesting detour. Cat is such a bad “alive parent” apparently. But I just didn’t buy tha t exchange or that line or reasoning…

    But behold! HOTU is here!

  • Okay usually I don’t care about show to book changes but Robb getting married under the Seven? WTF? That’s a huge inconsistency and continuity error. We’ve been told the Starks worship the Old Gods in the show….I guess that’s one thing I care about. The Starks and the Old Gods…And I guess I was looking forward to seeing a Northern Wedding.

  • Josh:

We’ve been told the Starks worship the Old Gods in the show….I guess that’s one thing I care about. The Starks and the Old Gods…And I guess I was looking forward to seeing a Northern Wedding.

Well, Catelyn worships the Seven so it’s not entirely unfathomable that the kids would be split. Sansa seems to lean more firmly toward the Seven but it’s not made clear with Robb, though I’d assume the Old Gods would be more appropriate with the King in the North jazz. But if there aren’t any weirwoods around in the south what can you do?

Note that I haven’t seen the scene yet, just getting myself inappropriately spoiled here while I wait until the hour I can actually watch….

  • Yeah I would have to agree, its a little bit of a pet peeve for me, but there’s really no reason Robb would pray to the 7, ,makes no sense to me.

And for god sakes its the Many Face god not the Red god, they need to get it together with their religions

  • The Greatjon:
Yeah I would have to agree, its a little bit of a pet peeve for me, but there’s really no reason Robb would pray to the 7, ,makes no sense to me.

And for god sakes its the Many Face god not the Red god, they need to get it together with their religions

Except that is what Jaqen says in the book, at least during that first encounter.

  • That couldn’t have had an extra 10 minutes in it! I had to glance at the clock because I couldn’t believe it when the credits started rolling.
Quite a few changes from the book. I think they shortened about 200 pages to about 50 but the story line is still progressing. Yes! and Finally! I was worried that they were going to minimize “The wall” storyline. I’m worried no more!

  • Why did the Others not talk in the ice crackling language and instead screeched like Nazguls from LOTR? Besides that they looked nice. Too bad no undead bears though…

  • Scholesy,

I’m not sure I remember that, but I am sure the Faceless men are associated with the Many faced god in the books. I thought he might have said it at first because she saved them from fire, but when he said in this episode about joining the Faceless men to give offerings to the Red god, I guess that confirms the show is changing it to avoid confusion.

But as Stark lover, I just get so irritated whenever I hear a northerner talk about the Seven, like when Lord Karstark talks about offering his heart to the father. Minor pet peeve I know, but Robb Stark is king in the North, theres no reason he would name all of the Seven gods during his wedding vows, can’t say its out of respect to Jeyne/Tallisa because in the show she’s from Volantis, just strange they would do that. And I know his mother worships the Seven, but its clearly shown (at least in the books) that Robb prays the the Old gods. Oh well not a huge deal.

    Anyway, great episode!

  • WOW ! Was that finale a masterpiece or what? After last week, I expected a letdown. They tieed up so many loose ends quite nicely. Danerys thread was handled well There was a ton on potential in the House of the Undying but seeing Khal Drago again was great. The empty vault was no surprise, but still played well. Tyrion is my favorite, and Peter D nailed his scene, as usual. Jon killing halfhand and the expectation of meeting Mance and seeing the array of Wildings will be a sight. But that last scene- with the White Walkers (and wights I guess) was a mind blower! Waiting for GRRM to finish the series is hard and waiting for next HBO season is a shorter wait, but also difficult. Well done.

  • The HOTU scenes really sucked. I was completely dissatisfied with the direction the chose to go. Possibly Dany’s most interesting chapter from the book ruined.

  • Big Noyd,

I disagree. In television you don’t have the time to tell all that was needed. They needed to make a few abstract statements. I love the way they achieved that with the frozen throne room to the wall.

I will concede that R+L=J should have been there. It is known.
I want to known who are the other two. Where were those clues.
    Visually stunning adaptation.
