A closer look at special makeup and prosthetic design
By Ours is the Fury on in Production.

New photos turned up recently online, giving us a fresh peek into the effects makeup and prosthetics used on Game of Thrones. White Walkers, gruesome injuries, and the shadow baby belly were designed and built by Creatures Inc. LTD.  Yes, the stunning creatures beyond the Wall were not entirely CGI as many had assumed.

Note: some photos may be NOT SAFE FOR WORK as they depict slight nudity (in the case of Melisandre’s belly) and graphic injuries (it still hurts to look at Jory’s face).

The level of detail on the White Walker is absolutely incredible.

Melisandre’s pregnant body looks so realistic. You can see the seams of the prosthetic under her breasts and by the groin. That’s a merkin she’s wearing, by the way. Carice van Houten said in in May, in the L.A. Times, that she “basically walked around making jokes…Making fun of the merkin. This may sound weird, but we had great fun taking pictures of me and the merkin.”

Still one of the most cringeworthy injuries we’ve seen on Game of Thrones, Jory Cassel met his end with a well-placed dagger.

Creatures Inc, LTD created other injuries seen on the show, such as this:

They also designed Lysa Arryn’s prosthetic breast, featured in the notorious breast-feeding scene in season 1, using actress Kate Dickie’s body as the actual model for the false breast. Fantastic work, I would say, since so many people to this day still believe it was real!

Ours is the Fury: What really gets to me are the TEETH on the White Walker, in the first photo. Amazing.

Typical brilliant work by the VFX team on thrones. I think seeing he White Walker here is far more impressive than on screen honestly. That’s a little sad, but it still looked good on screen. Here it just looks AWESOME though!! I love the snow crystal just hanging off the flesh of his fingers…..

It really must be a bit disconcerting to be between takes with a dagger sticking out of your eye…… That would just freak me right the #$%^ out! I cannot handle even an eyelash in my eye! XD

Right. There is some CGI, but a lot of people were under the impression that the entire ending with the White Walker and then all the wight-zombies was totally CGI. I still don’t know if the wight- zombies were 100% CGI. Seems like most people think so.

By the way, looking at the design of the White Walkers, I am reminded of the description of Bloodraven / three eyed crow in the books – any chance that going through the ‘treeification’ that Bloodraven and Bran are going through would eventually lead to becoming a White Walker?

    Love this. Beautiful work.

At the same time, it makes me a little sad again that they didn’t include the actual Undying in the HOTU. To me the descriptive connections between the Undying and the Others in the books came off as very important. I liked what they did, but there may have been a bigger WTF had they stuck closer to the original concept.

Melisandre’s merkin is hilarious, btw – not least because it’s so closely shaved! I mean, merkins are generally ridiculous, but a shaved one is even more so. In keeping with the rest of the show, I guess.

Also…Jory! So nice of you to visit us again, I’ve missed you! But can we drop the dagger next time? It’s taking the scarred men fetish just a tad too far. ;)

Ross: I am reminded of the description of Bloodraven

Same here! I often think about how he’s gonna look on-screen, if – one can only hope! – we get that far. Judging by these photos, it’s gonna be fantastic. But to answer your question, I guess anything is possible. Becoming one? I’m inclined to say no. But I think there has to be some other connection.

Wow, these are great! I also thought the WW was much more of a CGI creation than this – not totally CGI because I could see a guy on a horse in there somewhere but it definitely felt more CGI based than these photos. In retrospect, maybe that’s because the environment with all the other figures looked like an obvious composite shot at the end? The WW lost some impact by being in a crowd. It’s a shame really that it felt CGI-heavy (to me at least) because the prosthetics are totally brilliant.

This is very impressive stuff. The white walker is not as I imagined them (too human) but that does not detract in the least from the truly incredible craftmanship.

I wonder how they did the horse- horse puppet on greenscreen? If a real horse wore prosthetics it must be a very well behaved one!

    Shinyteapot,

I was wondering about the horse too.
I assume it was CGI in post-production…. maybe they had green “sleeves” on the horse’s muzzle and neck and then laid on the VFX? Would they even need the green background? Maybe the VFX reels for the season will have more info… I hope so!

    KG,

I wouldn’t put any stock in trying to suss out clues to the books from anything that’s done on the show. Especially not anything that has to do with the visual effects, which are changed and extrapolated to be more visually dramatic within a visual media format. The others in the books are not described as they appear in the series and I believe George has said that the are “beautiful.” I think they would have to be more human looking than the shows depiction for the Night’s King to fall in love with one and bring her back to the Wall. To be honest, the way the Others are depicted in the show bothered me, because to me they look more like my idea of the Three-Eyed Crow and erroneously implied a connection as you have picked up on.

Perhaps not! Darquemode is the one who learned about it being on PBS. He said he’ll post here or at the site of the trailers if he learns an exact date. Hopefully you’ll see it sooner rather than later. I’m really looking forward to Iain Glen as Warwick and Harry Lloyd as Mortimer. I wonder if GRRM will be looking forward to this as well, since those 4 plays cover the (fictionalized, of course) events which led to the eventual War of the Roses, which GRRM has always loved as an era in history.

It’s weird hearing so many people say the white walker looks better here than on the show. It’s the same guy, the same makeup, etc. I thought he looked AMAZING in the show, and he looks amazing here.

It’s possible the bright blue eyes and white misty background made him seem more cartoony and less realistic in the show… but I think that makes him look unique. Here, without the blue eyes, he reminds me a little too much of the Nazgul on Weathertop when Frodo puts on the ring and sees their true form:

The walker was also more brightly lit on the show, making him white. Perhaps that – along with the blue eyes – made him look less realistic/scary… but if he’d looked like in these photos, people would complain that he was grey.

I as well thought there would be more CGI involved than there apparently was, but as someone already mentioned, that’s largely due to the surrounding scene which was CGI-heavy. And I mean *clearly* CGI-heavy. A bit unfortunate really… (the generic screechy scream didn’t help either btw – a pity, as now the WWs came across as brainless demons rather than the highly intelligent super scary beings they should be)

    Petearys,

Budget and logistics. The Other in the pilot was not onscreen for a long shot and was mostly filmed from afar and in shadow so you couldn’t see to many details of the design. Now that they are focusing more on the Others with longer and closer shots they have more reason to spend more money on the design. Hence more detail, and a more developed design. Not what I would have chosen, but . . . oh well.

Probably because everyone bitched and moaned and complained about how much they hated the look of the WW from the pilot… so it’s understandable that they changed it.

Although I’ve seen a split screen comparison, and it really looks like the only major difference is that this WW has a nose, the original WW had a hole where the nose should be (like a skull).

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Lino and his family are naturists and go to nude beaches, resorts, saunas etc as many other European families do.”

I’m brazilian but even I know that this is a complete bullshit generalization. It’s not hard being not as prudish as the folks at the USA, but talking about “nude beaches”, “resorts” and “saunas” like they all go there and are completely okay with it is just…lying. In Brazil for an example, there’s nude beaches, and from all the people I know from my entire life (I live in São Paulo, by the way), only ONE person went to a nude beach. I guess it’s the same thing for europeans. We are not always naked like a few USA citizens seem to think.

It’s the only way I can think to do it. Most forums will use a span tag and give it a “spoiler” class, but WordPress strips any span tags from comments (for obvious reasons). If you have another solution, I’d love to hear it!

    Langkard,

When I was looking for promo stills and cast shots etc I read a lot or articles and press releases and read it would be on PBS, but I forgot to bookmark the site as a source… Now I cannot find it….

Ah, here is confirmation, but no news. A Tweet from Hiddleston himself apparently.

    Thanks, DarqueMode!

Simon Beale is Falstaff :) I can´t watch the BBC vídeos.Ok, patience.

Are they region blocked? They are on Spoiler TV and worked fine for me. See Tar Kidho’s suggestion below.

Agreed on Simon Beale. And the best thing is, he gets screen time in 3 of the 4 movies, although in the last one it’s for really sad stuff.

    Macha:
    Langkard,
Best thing about those fingernails is that you could pick your teeth two at a time. Who doesn’t want THAT?

I’d SO use it to embarrass the crap out of my daughter and son-in-law when we go out for dinner. My goal in life is to make her say, “Daaaad!” in exasperation in public.

Tar Kidho: First of all thanks for the info Langkard, definitely gonna watch that! Patrick Stewart, huray!!

And Andrea (plus anybody else), it plays tomorrow on BBC 2 at 9pm British time. In case you are awake then, you can google for My Premium TV, where you can find pretty high-quality livestreams of BBC 1 and 2…

Don’t thank me! Thank WiC for posting it on the WiC Tumblr and DarqueMode for posting on the Spoiler TV site and here.

Winter Is Coming: It’s the only way I can think to do it. Most forums will use a span tag and give it a “spoiler” class, but WordPress strips any span tags from comments (for obvious reasons). If you have another solution, I’d love to hear it!

The mechanism you have chosen for spoiler tags is quick-and-dirty but works fine unless the text includes a hyperlink. By default, browsers use a different text color (usually blue) to differentiate those from plain text.

The other thing is that the <b> used to mean boldface. The old tag is now deprecated but still respected by all browsers for the sake of backward compatibility. I recall that on at least one occasion, we had a thread in which a particular comment contained a <b> followed by the invalid closing tag </ b>. This resulted in part of that comment plus all subsequent comments inadvertently appearing in boldface.

The WIC.net server-side script that processes the submitted comments appears to automagically replace spoiler tags with completely different ones. The replacement HTML would ideally force not just the the text background but also the text foreground plus the hyperlink foreground to all be the same color, e.g. black. You’d need to test for multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android) and multiple browsers (IE, Safari, Firefox, Opera) if this really overrides whatever client-side rendering defaults are set to.

However, you should be able to choose any tag you want, e.g. <spoiler> or some such. It doesn’t have to be legal HTML, unless some WordPress “feature” gets in the way. The (admittedly small) upside would be greater clarity regarding the text to be spoilered when entering or editing a comment.

Note that by convention, all browsers ignore any tags they don’t recognize, i.e. anything that isn’t canonical HTML. Nevertheless, it’s good practice for a comment processing script to keep track of the number of open (i.e. opening minus closing) tags for those that are supposed to appear in pairs. If the number for any tag is greater than zero by the end of the comment, the script should flag that specific data entry error and force the user to edit and resubmit.

    DS,
Except Lino and his family are from Brazil, America. LOL

LOL you and the other guy who replied to my post have apparently ZERO reading comprehension abilities. I made no generalizations. It is indeed a fact that the majority of Americans DO flip out over even nonsexual nudity and moreso if there’s children involved.

I also said quite clearly that MANY Europeans are naturists. And that is true (and does not equate to Europeans running around naked everywhere). I know, I am a naturist myself and know the naturist scene in both the USA and Europe. I’ll admit that the UK is almost as uptight about nudist the USA, but France, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, as well as Sweden and the other Nordic nations are pretty open minded about nudity and have large naturist populations. Your “guessing” about Europeans is irrelevant.

Oh, and just because you no one you know has been to a nude beach (or they haven’t told you about it) doesn’t mean they haven’t…

Typical black-and-white internet reaction… Any opinions about what I actually said in my post?

Tar Kidho: can’t help but wonder about how Lino’s classmates reacted to those scenes. I hope he didn’t get picked on for that, but it’s almost inevitable amongst kids… (and yes, in this age they WILL have seen those scenes even if they weren’t allowed to watch the series by their parents)

Anyway, if anything, glad I could make you laugh…

It was actually good fun between takes and Danny Mc Bride did take the piss once or twice.

Small World! I was a minion on YH too. I got to lower James Franco onto a spike but got my arm hacked off and head cleaved in by Natalie Portman. I remember another minion had to spend all day with an iron fist sticking out of his stomach!

    darquemode,

first of all the shot with the WW was prostetic’s the horse again was real, that shot would of been shot on a green screen , the vfx for the horse decomposition was simpley layered ontop very easy to do tbh probably rotor scoped the whole shot and used motion tracking within the 3d software they use , maya probably.. same was done on one of the wights you see clearly he has his jaw missing its just composition with layers and motion tracking..

i have to say i rather enjoyed the scene it was done tastefully and it may of been cgi heavy in some respects. but you must consider that the back drop for the shot you see is of the wall which is always going to be in cg

This type of mattress will adjust to the contour of your body and relieve pressure on painful areas. If it cannot fit in your door, tell the manufacturers to disassemble the bed first and install it in the room instead rather than delivering it fully made. A bed with too much bounce could result in a constant need to reposition and not much satisfaction.
