Only a few more hours before I start contemplating how big a concussion i’d need to go unconcious for 10 months. This is terrible. :( By the time season 3 rolls around, i’ll probably have the series read another dozen times. This is gonna kill me.

But seriously can’t wait for all the stuff going to happen tonight. I want to know what the hell happened to Doreah. If she betrays Dany, I will scream “SHE TRUSTED YOU!!!!” at the television without a second thought, before breaking down into tears.

He does have it, it just doesn’t glow all the time. It would be really hard to basically have to do a Lightsabre-lite effect every time Stannis has his sword out, so I assume they’ll just have it glow at certain points, like after someone is sacrificed to the flames or something.

In any case, he fairly explicitly says that “Jaqen H’ghar must die” when he changes his identity, and what we learn later on in AFFC about the assumed identities of the Faceless Men suggests very strongly that there would be nothing “true” about any identity they assume.

    Amsterpaul,

The manticore is a Persian legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a red lion, a human head with three rows of sharp teeth (like a shark), and a trumpet-like voice. Other aspects of the creature vary from story to story. It may be horned, winged, or both. The tail is that of either a dragon or a scorpion, and it may shoot poisonous spines to either paralyze or kill its victims. It devours its prey whole and leaves no clothes, bones, or possessions of the prey behind.

Though we don’t know what appearance GRRM chose to use for ASoIaF manticores, it is clear that they do not use their poison to paralyze their victims, but rather to kill them (very painfully).

In short, a manticore is something to avoid at all costs.

Really excited/nervous for House of the Undying. I simultaneously have realistically low and hopefully high expectations.

I’m really hoping (pipedream-level hoping) for Rhaegar and Elia, some hint of RW, some hint of R+L=J, and the Undying Ones. On a more practical level, I hope we can see Viserys, Drogo, and Irri’s death scene. Realistically, I’m expecting just a creepy kind of tower and some weird hijinks from Pyat Pree.

In any event, there better be some damn dragon fire.

    And please give us Arstan!

Strong Belwas is a minor character that could be replaced. Jorah or Arsten can take his place as a fighter . The signs are too powerful that we will see Arsten. The actor joins twitter, grows his beard, Jaime mentions his name before killing his cousin. how else will u wrap up Dany’s arc this season than having her rescued by Arsten and killing Pyat Pree?

    John-Michael Lelievre: Vay-lar More-goo-lis here.

We have no idea what the phonetic structure of High Valyrian is, how the letters map to sounds. The simplest answer is to use plain Latin values for each letter, and to ignore Martin’s silly h’s that he soh likes to stick all ovher the place in his whords. But there are lhots of other possibhilities.

There’s also a question of where the stress falls on each word, if it does. It might even use tonal/pitch accent like Ancient Greek or various Asian languages even today. Imagine the minor third descending sing-song of a child’s “JOHNny, come out and PLA-ay” applied to the phrase.

Ignoring pitches but using stress, here are three reasonable possibilities:

       •  Latin-like: [ˈvalar ˈmorgulis] with rolled r’s
       •  English-like: [ˈveɪlɑɹ mɔɹˈgʊləz]
       •  Exotic: [βɐˈlaɾ ˈmuʁχyɫɨʒ]

If it’s closer to the last one, that would explain why Jaqen had to make Arya repeat it so much, since a bunch of those sounds are really foreign-sounding to the naïve English-speaking (well, -hearing) ear, and I’m sure poor Arya would have a terrible time with them.

My guess is that it will be one of the first two, though.

    We’ll find out soon enough.

He has more than one planned. The next one is done or just about and will appear in an anthology he is editing that focuses on women. I forget the name. But there’s more after that, I believe, and very well could be intended to take us all the way to Egg’s coronation or even Summerhall.

Well, Tyrion mentions how stupid it was to dismiss him because of his reputation. Plus, Renly talks says something along the lines of “Joffrey dismissed him. He must have gone to serve some King. He isn’t with me, he isn’t with your son, so where else could he go?”

I have been listening to “No Church in the Wild” (Jay Z & Kanye West) on loop today, which, for some reason, I find to be highly evocative of Game of Thrones. Could this be the reason? I wonder…

    “Human beings in a mob.
    What’s a mob to a king?
    What’s a king to a god?
    What’s a god to a non-believer, who don’t believe in anything?
Will he make it out alive? All right, all right…
    No church in the wild.”

And the answer: all men must die, but the worst ones will surely live.
It’s been one hell of a ride this season, and now come the summer, autumn, and yes, THE WINTER, of our discontent, awaiting the third season of the best show on television. *raises glass a-la Cersei* Enjoy!

I’m hoping for a Doc Rivers pep talk that goes something like this:

I had honestly not considered actually seeing the Wildling army approaching….
I just assumed we would hear the horns and get reaction shots.

If we actually see the army in the last scene as the horn sounds…. THAT could very well rival last year’s end scene. Wow!

Well, it’s good to see Tyrion keeps his nose. Nice Shae-Tyrion moment, but pity fairy tales don’t last forever.

Plus Robb marrying Jeyne with prior discussion with Cat is an interesting detour. Cat is such a bad “alive parent” apparently. But I just didn’t buy tha t exchange or that line or reasoning…

    But behold! HOTU is here!

Okay usually I don’t care about show to book changes but Robb getting married under the Seven? WTF? That’s a huge inconsistency and continuity error. We’ve been told the Starks worship the Old Gods in the show….I guess that’s one thing I care about. The Starks and the Old Gods…And I guess I was looking forward to seeing a Northern Wedding.

Well, Catelyn worships the Seven so it’s not entirely unfathomable that the kids would be split. Sansa seems to lean more firmly toward the Seven but it’s not made clear with Robb, though I’d assume the Old Gods would be more appropriate with the King in the North jazz. But if there aren’t any weirwoods around in the south what can you do?

Note that I haven’t seen the scene yet, just getting myself inappropriately spoiled here while I wait until the hour I can actually watch….

Yeah I would have to agree, its a little bit of a pet peeve for me, but there’s really no reason Robb would pray to the 7, ,makes no sense to me.

And for god sakes its the Many Face god not the Red god, they need to get it together with their religions

Except that is what Jaqen says in the book, at least during that first encounter.

That couldn’t have had an extra 10 minutes in it! I had to glance at the clock because I couldn’t believe it when the credits started rolling.
Quite a few changes from the book. I think they shortened about 200 pages to about 50 but the story line is still progressing. Yes! and Finally! I was worried that they were going to minimize “The wall” storyline. I’m worried no more!

    Scholesy,

I’m not sure I remember that, but I am sure the Faceless men are associated with the Many faced god in the books. I thought he might have said it at first because she saved them from fire, but when he said in this episode about joining the Faceless men to give offerings to the Red god, I guess that confirms the show is changing it to avoid confusion.

But as Stark lover, I just get so irritated whenever I hear a northerner talk about the Seven, like when Lord Karstark talks about offering his heart to the father. Minor pet peeve I know, but Robb Stark is king in the North, theres no reason he would name all of the Seven gods during his wedding vows, can’t say its out of respect to Jeyne/Tallisa because in the show she’s from Volantis, just strange they would do that. And I know his mother worships the Seven, but its clearly shown (at least in the books) that Robb prays the the Old gods. Oh well not a huge deal.

    Anyway, great episode!

WOW ! Was that finale a masterpiece or what? After last week, I expected a letdown. They tieed up so many loose ends quite nicely. Danerys thread was handled well There was a ton on potential in the House of the Undying but seeing Khal Drago again was great. The empty vault was no surprise, but still played well. Tyrion is my favorite, and Peter D nailed his scene, as usual. Jon killing halfhand and the expectation of meeting Mance and seeing the array of Wildings will be a sight. But that last scene- with the White Walkers (and wights I guess) was a mind blower! Waiting for GRRM to finish the series is hard and waiting for next HBO season is a shorter wait, but also difficult. Well done.

    Big Noyd,

I disagree. In television you don’t have the time to tell all that was needed. They needed to make a few abstract statements. I love the way they achieved that with the frozen throne room to the wall.

I will concede that R+L=J should have been there. It is known.
I want to known who are the other two. Where were those clues.
    Visually stunning adaptation.
