New award season begins

TCATime really flies, I remember the first show nominations as if it was yesterday, but it has apparently been a year. Nominations for two awards have been announced, and Game of Thrones made the lists once more.

First, the Critics’ Choice Television Awards where Thrones is nominated for Best drama series and Peter Dinklage for best supporting actor are taking place on June 18. Compared to last year, GoT scored an additional nomination with Dinklage this time around. No win last year.

Second, Television Critics Association Awards take place on July 28. Three nominations for Game of Thrones (Outstanding drama, Program of the year, and Individual achievement award for Dinklage). Last year, the show won in the Outstanding new program category, where it is of course not eligible this year.

Keep in mind, though, that there are still a few awards where season one is among the contenders. There are two in June, Monte Carlo Television Festival (Best drama series nomination, Best actor – Peter Dinklage and Kit Harington, Best actress – Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke) on the 14th and Saturn Awards on the 20th (four nominations: Best short TV series, Sean Bean and Lena Headey as leads, Kit Harington supporting). At the end of August, Hugo Awards will be dished out, and GoT is in the race for Best long form dramatic presentation.

Dinklage is amazing, as we know. But I would like to see a few other actors get some recognition also, especially Alfie, Sophie and Maisie. Its tough – so many are worthy.

I’m of course biased here, but I don’t see how GOT won’t be racking up more awards, especially because of what seems its huge increase in popularity since season 1. Hopefully Dinklage will win again, and more of the cast will be in the mix!

A woman is pleased to see her favorite show get some recognition, and some of the actors as well! It would be great to see some of the strong female characters acknowledged for their roles too. Dinklage is the boss and deserves every accolade he gets, but there are so many other great characters/actors as well. Maisie Williams has certainly proven her prowess this year and should be awarded, and Lena Headey has carried much of the Kings Landing plot on her shoulders and should be acknowledged. This season, Alfie Allen has risen to the level of a lead in his story, and has brought an incredible depth to the character. Alfie shows so much of the confusion on his face, you can’t help but feel a bit sad for him. Awards for all of them!

Questions for those who know the rules of such things: why doesn’t anybody from GoT get a best actor or best actress nomination for these award shows?

Is there a percent ratio for time-on-screen or number of lines that preclude that possibility and mean that all the stars in GoT are eligible only for the supporting slot awards or individual achievement awards?

Isn’t there an award for best ensemble cast? Which awards show is that? And if not, shouldn’t there be more ensemble awards in these shows?

It is this woman’s opinion that there should be an award for “Actor who did the most with the Least” (for those 2nd and 3rd tier in the script who made great impressions) and a woman would nominate Tom Wlaschiha for his Jaqen H’ghar!

Is there an award for best casting person? Nina and co. should definitely be awarded, as even the smaller rolls have been cast with exquisite care and made such a difference. Can you imagine a different Jaqen? Yoren? Maester Luwin? Pod Payne? Old Nan? Hodor? Rickon? Tommen?

Thanks Hear Me Roar for keeping us updated on these matters! Excited for them!

    lovesduncan,

I agree… Peter is amazing but I am looking forward in seeing him take a backseat in seasons 3 and 4 so the other amazing actors/characters can get some well deserved screen time.

Season 2 had a huge focus on Kings Landing. Season 3 & 4 not so much…. More Dany and more Jon Snow, Jaime and Brienne. Lots more Bran and the Reeds.

All the storylines that have taken a backseat will be pushed to the front and the actors playing the characters can step up and shine.

Don’t get me wrong, I wish Peter Dinklage all the best this awards seasons. It’s just that there are so many talented people associated with the cast who also deserve recognition: how about Nina Gold for her excellent casting? Or Brian Cogman for best screenplay (ep 13)? Or GRRM (ep 19)? The list seems endless…

    Mrs. H’ghar,

    Mrs. H’ghar,

At least for the Emmy’s, it was a decision by production staff to submit actors only for supporting roles rather than have any one person submitted as a lead. Although PD could probably have won Best Actor as a lead. Might have something to do with Sean Bean gettting snubbed last year. Pretty sure the actor’s were aware of and agreed with the decision.

I agree about ensemble cast. But the real win would be Outstanding series, because that would include ALL worthy recipients. Cast, writers, music, wardrobe, set design, etc. So much hard work has gone into making this show as brilliant as it has been. Hope they all can share in a win.

While the Emmys are still a ways off, I would not be surprised if GoT does extremely well in the Creative Arts this year, much as Boardwalk Empire did last year. I also think Neil Marshall or Alan Taylor could have a good shot for directing.

Tyrion was onscreen for about 90 minutes this year of about 540.

Bryan Cranston or John Hamm do about 90 minutes in two episodes. It would be hard for a lot of people to vote for Dinklage over Cranston (who is very good as well) on pure quality, but once you incorporate airtime, he has no shot.

Dinklage is renominated because he’s awesome, but also as an “incumbent” it’s probably their best chance to win.

There are ensemble cast awards for some awards. The Emmys dropped their casting director awards after only a few seasons, but I agree, it’s somewhat ridiculous there isn’t one.

    Maxwell James,

The main question for the Emmys is can GOT repeat the last year nomination for best drama.
I still think it would be though goal to achieve, with Downtown Abbey among the contenders this year, but the surprise lack of Boardwalk Empire in those early nominations gives a hope.

    winterfell,

It’s very unlikely that Dinklage would win Best Actor at the Emmy’s. This isn’t a slight on his performance; it’s just that Bryan Cranston is a freight train in that category.

Breaking Bad coming back puts some stiff competition into Supporting Actor as well, but not as stiff, and, as has been mentioned, Dinklage’s win last year in that category gives his chances a boost.

I’m someone who wasn’t completely convinced he would win last year, but did think he was a front runner and was happy he won.

This year, I think his performance was actually better than the first year and certain episodes, especially Blackwater, give him a better showcase for submission than anything found in a single episode of season 1. That said, I’m not convinced he’ll win this year, either, and think his chances might actually be a little worse. Annual awards have less to do with how good you are and more to do with your competition.

He may be able to pull off another Supporting Actor win, but he almost certainly wouldn’t win Lead.

    The Rabbit,

I’d be a little surprised if it didn’t (knock on wood). Fairly or not, Boardwalk Empire’s star seems to have dimmed this past year. And while I enjoy Downton Abbey, its second season was an unholy mess, with continuity problems and cop-outs that make the problems in GoT S2 look pretty minor by comparison.

Now winning the category – that ain’t gonna happen.

The reality is that there’s still some level of bias against fantasy, if only in what the voters will watch.

Both Breaking Bad and Mad Men are in genres that are universally accepted as quality drama by voters and Mad Men, frankly, as a period drama about disillusionment in the American Dream, really is only missing british accents to make “the perfect awards show.”

And, of course, both are really good. Even if all voters were open minded, GoT would have a hard time going head to head, but lets say in an open minded world, GoT would win some category by a few percent of the vote. In the real world, that edge is lost because some people just don’t see it as “serious” enough.

Dinklage got a real boost by Breaking Bad missing out on the Emmys last year. There’s extra stiff competition this year; Mad Men has had huge critical acclaim.

My biggest gripe with the Critics’ Choice Awards nominations is the lack of Boardwalk Empire in the drama category. The second season was overall a stronger product than the first, and that’s another HBO show absolutely stacked with great actors and performances. Tis’ a shame.

I’d be pretty shocked if GoT didn’t get nominated for the best drama category in the Golden Globes or Emmy Awards. Once you are in, people will keep nominate something especially if it had all this buzz going around. Just look at all the love Downtown Abbey season 2 is getting in the awards this season, it was an absolutely fucking mess, so bad even Jorah fucking Mormont couldn’t save it, and yet it gets all these nominations for season 2.

But that said, I’m more rooting for Breaking Bad to dethrone Mad Men (which is having a very good season too this year). Season 4 of BB was one of the best seasons ever on tv. Then again, that brilliant season wasn’t even nominated for the Globes.

    Coltaine777,

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the fourth season, but I felt like it was a little sloppier than the second and third seasons, and had a few meandering episodes during the middle portion. For a show as meticulous and taut as Breaking Bad, those episodes really stuck out for me.

Mad Men, on the other hand, is having what is probably its second best season, and possibly its best, depending on the season finale. Then there’s Boardwalk Empire, which was also excellent this season (although not without its flaws).

Game of Thrones was incredible this season, but as I’ve said before, I’m in no way a purist and am entirely willing to judge it as a seperate entity from the books, so maybe that’s why I actually enjoyed this season as much as I did the first.

But if I had to pick a winner today, I’d go with Luck, and will in no way try to hide my bias for David Milch in doing so. Really though, I know that not a lot of people tuned in and that many of those who did ended up tuning out in the first few episodes, but by the end of the season I felt it had told an incredibly unique story with strong characters and an incredible aesthetic. In fact, it could nearly work as a series final, if not for one dangling plot thread. Anyone who hasn’t checked it out, I highly recommend you do so if you like good television.

    Knurk,

Tremè will be back on the air around the same time Boardwalk Empire comes back. Can’t wait. I’m not always in the mood to watch Tremè, but when I get myself sat down to watch it, I’m always impressed with how immersive that show is.

    WinterComing,

as i said, the actors did a fantastic job, but how many stories do you know that have a dwarf as the main character, playing a serious role? i dont know how many more “death at a funeral” remakes peter dinklage would have been able to make. all i am saying is that these are exceptional characters played by great actors. full stop.

Are these fan voted awards that WiC posts going to have some generic ones?

    Like;

    Best episode
    Best storyline
    Best naked scene
    Best death
    Most badass

Stuff like that would be fun… IDK maybe just I think so?

A woman agrees with your categories…maybe you could add a few more, like:

Actor who did the most with the least
    Best Attitude in Armor
    Best Hair extensions
    Best male wig wearer
    Best nasty teeth
    Best Greasy hair look
    Best “Oh My God” take
    Best entrance on a horse
    Best exit on a horse
    Best sword wielder
    Best crying performance
Best “Oh no you Di’n't” look

    A woman could go on…

Yes, why is Peter the only one who seems to get recognized? I guess because his character is a fan favorite, but this whole cast deserves recognition.

The absent Boardwalk Empire is sad. Damn, that season finale was cruel.

    Downton was a trainwreck!

Excited about marathoning BB this month. My first time to watch. People have told me they’re jealous.

I think Mad Men is gonna sweep.

Most badass would be interesting. No idea who I would vote for in that category: The Hound? Bronn? Tywin? Daenerys maybe? Tough one but everything on this show is tough because it is so damn good!

    The Rabbit: all

+1, definitely won’t win this time, and Dinklage while still very good, probably would only win if not much competition.

    Mrs. H’ghar:

Pod Payne? Old Nan? Hodor? Rickon? Tommen?

Ensemble cast would be a fitting category, yes, especially with so many actors delivering a great performance.

For “actor doing the most with the least” I would nominate Donald Sumpter, though. Hands down.

And as for the casting… Well, I strongly have to disagree with you there. While I’m fine with most of Nina Gold’s choices (not all of them though!), I can certainly imagine many of those differently (after all, some were described quite differently in the book, and it takes a lot to erase an established image in my head):
    Jaqen: comes very close
Yoren: a lot different (though I liked his performance)
    Maester Luwin: spot on!
Podrick: a lot different, don’t like the casting much
    Old Nan: more or less
    Hodor: different
    Rickon: rather different
    Tommen: again, a lot different
    Sorry, you asked. :)

The episode with the fly was pure genius :) I mean, what other show would even attempt at something like this, let alone make it so good? That’s how good this show is and how great are Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.
Breaking Bad should win everything this year.

    Dale Rippke,

I read this too and was very surprised that he dropped that, it’s one of the most prominent unknowns to book readers speculation. And especially since the “LS” reference may imply the father (or mother) is still alive, which fits exactly none of the current theories I’m aware of. What’s the biggest surprise is that GRRM may have actually told Kit this. I know he’s revealed some stuff to D&D out of necessity but telling anyone else seems way out of character.

    Mrs. H’ghar,

My “actor doing the most with the least” would be Conleth Hill as Varys but others would deserve a nomination, in fact all this category would be filled with GoT cast members if there was one.

As others have said, i’ll be glad if some other actors could get a little recognition (Yes Peter still deserves to win everything, even more so than last year, but some noms for other cast members would be greatly appreciated). It really is an ensemble cast and the ensemble is more than solid.

    Alex Dubrovsky,

I really can’t get into Breaking Bad, i kept with it for 2 whole seasons because a lot of friends are raving about it (they’re all into drugs so i guess it reaches those familiar with these kind of businesses more easily) but i just couldn’t see the apppeal, it’s slow, it’s always the same plot repeated over an over again except it’s just a bit worst every time (exactly like weeds but weeds is funny at least). Yes Cranston seems to be flawless but it’s not enough given that his character rarely says more than 10 words by episode.
I guess i like it a bit better than Mad Men which i couldn’t even watch for a whole season but i’m really lost when i see people comparing those to The Wire, Sopranos, The West Wing or Deadwood or even Game of Thrones.
To each their own i guess, but i hate cop shows and still consider the Wire to be the best tv show ever aired (for now, we’ll see how GoT has been doing in 3 or 4 years), so i should be able to recognize greatness even if the show’s topic doesn’t interest me at first.

    ASOIAF Fan,

I got addicted to BB after just one episode. Yes, it can get dark and actually get’s darker and darker every season, but I never found it that slow and never thought that it’s the same plot over and over (that’s House). Also, it has a lot of a very dark humor.

For me, it’s the best show I have ever seen. It’s just perfect and flawless. And I’m even not into drugs at all.

It’s art/entertainment, right, so there’s a tremendous amount of personal perspective brought to the discussion.

I watched the first season of Mad Men. It’s incredibly well written, well acted, the direction and art direction are top notch. Frankly, it’s better executed than Game of Thrones (if much, much less ambitious).

But I don’t find it compelling. Most of the characters aren’t gray; they are mostly awful people. And the thematics of the illusion of the American Dream, eh. There’s twenty movies every year about that. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s that I’ve seen Mad Men before, even if it was with less drinking and smoking at work.

I can entirely understand why it wins Emmys. But I don’t know if I will ever pop in season 2.

A little correction to the awards above –

For the Saturn Awards, Sean Bean is up for Best Actor, Lena Headey for Best Actress, and Kit Harington for Best Supporting Actor. The way it is written above looks like they are all supporting cast.

For the Hugo Awards, “A Dance With Dragons” is nominated for Best Novel in addition to Game Of Thrones nominated for Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form).

i think kit harington was being honest when he answered in response to a fan question at Comic-con last year that GRRM did not tell him who Jon’s mother is. He said he felt this mystery helps him play Jon better. Otherwise he might start playing the character ahead of time.

Yep, Conleth Hill is an excellent Varys (and I don’t just dawdle out praise on every single actor like some others, I truly mean that!). I still think Donald Sumpter uses (or rather, used) more subtle detail in his portrayal of Maester Luwin.
