George is funny. Should start a comedy novel, but after the Song of Ice and Fire is done.
Missing Lena Headey at the panel.

Last year was more entertaining but this is still nice. Miss the Lannisters and of course Jason Momoa and Kit Harrington (hope his ankle is better). Rose Leslie is so sweet. Loved it when she said “you know nothin’!
George sure loves trying to get them all blushing with his antics. Wonder where his 13 year old booby huntress is at the moment :)

To spark some drama to wile the time away, I would like to point out that Michelle Fairley rolls her eyes at 10:25 in the first video when Alfie Allen says “It’s been great to play and I’m just happy to be part of it.” Surely this can become a great controversy.

So far, George makes a good moderator and the cast is amiable. And of course it has the effect of making me want the next season to come sooner.

Last year was better because there was Jason Momoa. GRRM is really awkward this year. The way he focuses on the sex and the boobies was really creepy. And there was a really weird vibe between him and Alfie.

The cast is great though. Very upbeat. Michelle Fairly and Richard Madden have some inappropriate chemistry going on there…

    Edited for grammar.

George seems like such an affable guy, and I’m really starting to believe that Game of Thrones may have the best cast that’s ever been assembled for just about anything. I’m just trying to savour and enjoy all things Thrones right now, because it certainly won’t last forever. Happy Saturday, friends!

Well I did not sense that much awkwardness in there. The thing between George and Alfie was a little strange because George wanted him to talk about the fake scripts and Alfie did not get it.

And well the perv talk… Maybe its just me but I found it hilarious. I think its just his kind of humor.

The lack of Jason Mamoa & Peter Dinklage was extremely apparent.

Peter wasn’t very talkative last year (he looked/sounded kind of tired from the videos I saw, plus he might have been overwhelmed). The panel definitely missed Jason’s energy though.

I did find some of the excessive references to the SNL skit/sex/nudity kind of awkward, and GRRM/Alfie talking past each other for awhile on the prank made me cringe a bit. I did think the panel got better once it got to the fan questions though.

i just watched the whole thing.. and i have to say.. wow that was a pretty lackluster panel compared to last years awesomeness..
not knocking the people that were up there, they are all cool.. but it was clear from the outset that they wouldn’t be able to beat the awesomeness of having Jason Momoa, Peter Dinklage, etc on stage.

i really hope they get some of the kids up there in 2013 and have some people from last year back again.

Also hate to knock George but the sex and nudity comments got old around the second or third time..

Sooooo wtf was that about Theon dying?? i thought he was turned into Reek? not dead…. i really hope they dont kill him off, because his character is the best shades-of-grey character in the whole series imo, and would be a shame to make the audience go from hating someone to feeling so sorry for them that u think that karma is evilly cruel…

GRRM is a great writer, but a terrible moderator. It took almost a whole minute to ask a question from the 9 to 10 minute mark in the first video. And during that time he said “ah” about 20 times. He really killed the pacing of the interviews.

The pace got better when the audience got to ask the questions.

Is it me or did this years panel feel extremely awkward and slightly boring ? It definitely wasn’t as enjoyable as last years.

I love George but he’s not got the right sort of charisma and enthusiasm to host these things, he should be a panel member though.

I think GRRM should take his time writing the rest of the series, or just stop writing it entirely. Readers should decide for themselves how the story will end and imagine it happening that way in their minds. George could then leave the door open for the fan fiction authors he so reverently adores to finish off the series for him. Everyone’s happy.

  32. Andrew
    Posted July 14, 2012 at 4:23 pm | Permalink

    Dave Brownell,

George was trying to get Alfie to tell the story of D&D writing a fake script in which Theon is killed by Bran, but Alfie thought he meant did Theon ACTUALLY die at the end of season two (Which is what he gets asked by a lot of other interviewers) so it kind of went over his head.

Feminists on Tumblr are having a field day over George’s use of the word “Boobies”. Controversy, Go!

I enjoyed the panel, personally. The last question for Emilia was especially good. Of course with any show/panel, the question pool as the years go on is going to get smaller, so we’re going to hear some of the same stuff over and over, but it’s nice for the fans who might not have had the chance to attend a Con in the past, and haven’t seen the videos.

My god that was painful to watch. I felt so bad for the panel, they seemed so uncomfortable being stuck in a room with so many socially awkward nerds and weirdos. (including GRRM himself) star trek what? Boobies? Light in darkness? Jesus, Can’t they find better people to ask questions and represent the fan base then these custom wearing rejects? No wonder none of the actors from the show don’t want to attend these panels anymore. You can just tell from their facial expressions and body languages that they didn’t want to be there. I predict In a couple years they will just have GRRM and Hodor attending these things annually and simply talking about boobies…

Don’t understand what’s with all the panel bashing. I’m pretty sure that if I (or we) were there, on the spot, and see the panel as a whole … with the casting announcements and everything, I’d be thrilled as hell. Sitting at home, watching it for the sixth time on PC and overanalysing every sentance … now that’s something completely different. :)

There was a massive lack of Lannisters this year :(

I do agree that the panel was a bit lackluster. I can’t blame it too much on the panelists, though. It’s the moderator’s job to pick up the pace when necessary. GRRM is an old hand at comic cons, and I’m always interested in what he has to say, but a change of moderators in the next years might not hurt.

Andrew: The last question for Emilia was especially good.

I agree! That was the most insightful question from the audience. It would also have been nice if Richard Madden gave an answer. Just to wet the appetites of those who haven’t read ASOS.

The ‘King in the North” chanting was hilarious. Richard and Emilia could definitely raise up an army of followers for themselves if they wanted to.
Michelle Farley seems absolutely lovely. She really knows what she’s doing as an actress. I think we got really lucky for her to play such a complex character as Catelyn.
Rose is cute, I wonder how many times more she’ll be asked to say “You know nothing…” But she seems to embrace this part of the fandom.
George looked to have a lot of fun. I guess the turtle thing explains parts of ADWD.
I don’t really miss the “Lannisters”, I thought this was a great panel.

Thank God I’m not the only one who saw a mostly (except when the actors were speaking) akward and uncomfortable panel :) I mean, George is awesome and his work his amazing, but man he made me cringe in akwardness while in the comfort of my home.

Questions who should have been asked: season 3, funny facts on set, differences book/tv show, favorite scene of season 2.

PS: I never criticize about GOT because of it’s awesomness and joy it brings to my Sundays, but that was disapointing :S

  55. Lex

It wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, from the comments I’d read here. But George really only shines when he’s talking seriously about his work, not making silly jokes.

His questions and comments about the locations, the production, the acting, etc., were the best ones. The repeated questions about sex scenes were just silly. The awkward exchange with Alfie was actually hilarious (when George, clearly frustrated, cuts him off and says “Damn Greyjoy!” LOL).

Michelle Fairley gave the best answers, followed by Emilia and Rose. I love those women!

    kevanlannister,

Yeah, I’ve always loved Michelle Fairley’s voice. She also looks even more stunning without the Catelyn makeup and costume. And I envy the attention she’s getting from Richard!

    Lex,

I agree, it’s not that bad. The panelists all seemed game (You know nothing! NOTHING!), it just needed a more peppy moderator. I didn’t mind the mention of “boobies”, but if they were gonna bring it up, at least have a more mature discussion to neutralize the jokes. Emilia was asked about the Qartheen costumes, but I wasn’t too convinced with the answer. If I ever made it to one of these panels, I would love to ask about the skewed female:male ratio of nudity, and how they think nudity detracts from/enhances the story.

I liked the question about how the story might reflect current issues. I understand why the panel didn’t delve into this (especially in the wake of the idiotic ‘Bush head on a spike’ controversy) and while GRRM borrowed Tolkein’s ‘it’s not an allegory’ line, to me one of the themes of the books reflects the reality of our politics. Tyrants, egomaniacs and rich men vying for political power, while serious issues are essentially ignored – in the books winter/white walkers, and for us, dramatic climate change. While I doubt GRRM has this in mind specifically, there are certainly parallels, at least IMHO.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of being too close to the material.

But, yeah, definitely not the energy in the room of last year’s Comi-Con.

They should get Hibberd to moderate, or this guy from TV Guide. Dayumm, that cast from Breaking Bad sure knows how to get in the spirit (can’t wait for tonight’s premier)!

If cheekbones could kill then Michelle would be awesome at it. Her facial features kind of remind me of Natascha McElhone. Must be something in the water over there. I agree that she is a very attractive woman indeed! The eye contact and little interactions between her and Richard make it obvious that they get along very well.
Rose’s “you know nothing” was awesome..too bad she didn’t get to talk a lot but unfortunately for her (and perhaps understandably) the bulk of the attention went out to some of her collegues. Emilia’s laugh and her dancing eyebrows never get old..I can’t imagine that girl being anything but a treat to know.

GRRM was a bit on the creepy side as a moderator but I loved his response to the current events question where he quoted Tolkien. You can tell he is more in his element being the one to answer questions, rather than ask them. It was pretty funny to see Alfie not catching on to the bran killing/fake script bone George was throwing him, it seems like his mind wasn’t in the room at all times. Perhaps Kristian/Hodor mixed him a few too many drinks the night before?

As a woman could not attend ComicCon, it was a pleasure to watch these videos of the panel. GRRM is a writer, not Dave Letterman! Let him take his time in asking questions, he wrote the source material and it’s his prerogative to show up at ComicCons as long as he wants to. Could it have been a little quicker paced? Yes, but do you want a rehearsed panel or spontaneity? Awkwardness now and again is the price you pay for having a truly spontaneous panel. Thanks for posting!

I just got back from comic con today and I was lucky enough to get in to Hall H for the panel. Being there, the energy was really up and everyone seemed to have a good time. I did find myself thinking that GRRM let the silence between questions drag, especially when compared to the other moderators (I sat through all the panels before Thrones). There was a lot of focus on sex but there were a lot of accidental double entendres during the Big Bang and Walking Dead panels so the entire audience had its mind in the gutter already anyway. I was charmed by everyone on the panel, especially Richard and Rose. Definitely the highlight of my con going experience.

Fun aside, during the Big Bang Theory panel someone mentioned that Kaley Cuoco loved Game of Thrones and the exchange went a bit something like this

moderator: Kaley, I remember you saying you really liked Game of Thrones
    Kaley: *all lustfully* Jon Snow
moderator: Surely you like it for the fine story telling and production and-
    Kaley: *deeper* Jon Snooooow

I’m really sad Kit wasn’t there for that.
