2012 London Olympics open thread
By Winter Is Coming on in General.

Long-time readers might remember that we had an open thread for the last major worldwide sporting event, the World Cup. The thread was a lot of fun, with our large international contingent of readers all rooting on their home country. With the Olympics kicking off in London today, I thought it would be a good time to have another open thread.

So let’s hear from you in the comments. What country are you from? Which events are you looking forward to? Feel free to chat about anything and everything Olympics!

And, for some added fun and to keep this somewhat on-topic, tell us which events the Game of Thrones characters would compete in? For example, I’m certain that Syrio Forel would be a gold medalist in fencing! What others can you think of?

Tyrion would probably be a pretty good wrestler (low center of gravity).

Also, I’d imagine the Mountain and Strong Belwas would be pretty good at weightlifting. Brienne too.

    Bryon Blofstein,

I quite liked the jousting part of FMJ; the posturing and stare-downs for the camera were ultralame though.

But meanwhile – Live streaming fencing! FINALLY I can watch every damn bout. Wooty!

I am actually happy to post my thoughts on the Olympic games here rather than say – CNN forums, which are so full of hate it makes me sick!
First and foremost – loved the amazing opening ceremony. Watched it from beginning to end, even though in Israel it is GMT+2 so only at 3 AM did I manage to crawl to bed. Love British humor! Queen parachuting in with 007, lol!
Proud to say that, as an Israeli male I am 100% rooting for the women of Saudi Arabia, and other countries which, for the 1st time are allowed to compete! Hope they win medals, make their countries proud and prove how much women should be given what is theirs by right – which is equality! Main thing is to have a great sporting competition, respectful and exciting. We have enough problems in the world, at least the Olympics give us a 17 day get-together spectacle.
The Mountain would kick ass in the games, Arya would be the next Nadia Comaneci and Jaime would definitely win the disabled fencing competition after S3.

I’m not necessarily looking forward to a specific event. I just like to sit back in my sofa (I usually take off from work for the Summer Olympics) and go back and forth between the channels and see stuff. You can happen upon an unexpected event that turn out fantastic, and that’s what I like about the Olympics.

But I will of course follow the athetics rigorously.

What a fun idea! Thanks for this thread, Winter. The opening ceremony last night was insane, kudos to Danny Boyle for his vision and to his team for pulling it off. Sheer genius.
As for the events, being from Romania, I’m most looking forward to seeing how our girls perform in the gymnastics events. For the Westeros Olympics, I’m gonna go with the obvious choice: Blackfish for swimming. ;)

    Matt S,

Oh look someone who never succeeded at anything athletic in school and as such decides to post inflammatory comments on the interwebs in the hope that someone will class him as a keyboard warrior rather than the pathetic troll that he is!

These athletes live their lives for moments like these, statements like “Sport Sucks” suggests that there entire life has been for nothing, being the best that they can be, or that ANYONE can be at anything is a great achievement, these guys (and gals) chose sports…

So its not them that sucks my friend, but you! You may think you don’t in your obviously superior world where you run, jump and throw further and better, but you do!

My favorite summer olympic sports are swimming, gymnastics, and track & field. I’m rooting for Ryan Lochte, a fellow gator. I think our male gymnastics team is stronger than our female team.

    Now, on to GoT:

Arya would kick butt in gymnastics. She’s got the whole balance thing down and is pretty nimble.

    Brienne: wrestling, weight lifting.

    Theon: archery

I didn’t agree with Matt’s comment either, but petty reversals like this make you look just as foolish. You’re throwing a lot of gawky fire at a single weed, which also qualifies you as a keyboard warrior, or a self-appointed Guardian of the Internet. In short? Don’t feed the troll.

In an Olympics overrun with ASOIAF, Thoros of Myr would have ran with the torch, the Cleganes would dominate every feat of strength, Sam would be the ball in multiple events, Theon would have a shot at an archery medal, and the White Walkers would be busy at home getting ready to make a clean sweep at the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Kind off funny to see Sky / GB fuck up like that! 30 vs 5 you are not going to win it.
Vino really deserves it, he made a doping mistake in the past but has always been an attacking rider… I remember him returning in Luik_bastenaken_Luik and people booing him. I saw him get the pink jersey in the giro d’italia in Middelburg 2 years back. The late Wouter Weylandt won that one.
As for the dutch guys they fucked up in that group they were sleeping… so were the italians, spaniards and americans though… Not even talking about GB and Germany.

Holland should be able to get 10 golds if all goes well. If things turn ugly we should at least get 5. Tonight 99% sure first one swimming 4×100…

Finally of course the main event of olympics is 100m men bolt vs blake. Will be interesting to see that one!

It really saddends me that the Olympic Comitee have decided not to have a minute of silence for the Munich 11 at the olymipcs. It is obviously a political decision made not to upset any of the arab states, but there I thought that the Olympic Comitee dosen’t answer to anyone.

It’s also sad because if a thing like that happend to any other country, there was no question on holding a minute of silence or not.

Check this out, even in the American Congress some great people stood a minute in silence.

I love watching sports, and unlike most people, I can perfectly enjoy it without having to pick my favourite before the event. I watch sports for the emotion of the victory, and whoever wins, if they are happy that makes me happy!

One of the best moments in sporting history for me was the victory of Cathy Freeman in Sydney, such a story, such emotion, such electricity in the stadion!!! Still brings tears of joy to my eyes, even though I’m from the other side of the globe… (Belgium)

Another fantastic moment was the duel Gebreselassie – Tergat at the 10000m at those same Games. What a duel!! And Haile is such a fantastic person that it was always a pleasure to see him win.

For these Games, I look forward to any event that can deliver an exciting final, with a winner (or a winning team) for whom the medal clearly means the world. I hate it when somebody wins and finds themselve too cool to show emotions, like so many pro football (sorry USians: “soccer”) and basketball players for instance.

Oh, and I propose Varys for the allround gymnastics title. It would be a huge surprize, but that’s what I’ve come to expect from the Spider. Do you really think he has an entire army of kids inside the walls of King’s Landing? Nah, all that rustling, that’s just him pulling off all sorts of acrobatics in those tiny rat-sized spaces…

    Winter Is Coming,

Haha, if you’re from a tiny country as Belgium (11 million inhabitants) then almost EVERY opponent can be seen as a giant ;-) Now letting my weakly-developed nationalistic feelings speak: one belgian already set a new olympic record in rowing today, one judoka won a bronze medal, and one low-ranked tennis player beat the number 7 of the world. Take THAT you giant of a World!

I’m not the type of person to get excited when someone from my country happens to win an event or not. That’s something I’ll never understand, the thinking that these athletes ‘represent’ me if they come from the same general area.

So I just like watching spectacle, when anyone comes from behind to pull off an upset win, or there’s a spectacular failure, it’s always fun. But I don’t care who wins.

The archery final was so intense. It basically came down to the final shot where the Italian had to bullseye to win. Anything else would have resulted in a shoot off or US win. And he got it.

Too bad for the US, who settle for silver. Although they did well to make it to the match. And apparently Italy has been close to gold the past few Olympics in team archery and this time they finally broke through, so good for them.

Shadowbaby will win every single competition by eliminating the competition alltogether! But it will have a hard time lifting anything. Also, not sure what will happen when it hits the water or how medals will be put around its neck. Jaqen H’ghar might nab quite a few medals by assassinating the winners and then taking their faces.
Winter Olympics will obviously be dominated by the white walkers.
The various sailing events: Iron Islanders will dominate those. Victarion for the gold
Littlefinger will probably win the Marathon considering how fast he covered thousands of leagues on his travels – hehe.

I’m in the UK and not too far from the action (road cycling goes right along my route to work), but will not be going to any events aside from sneaking a look at said cycling- I’m off to France to attend a wedding instead! Won’t take up all the olympic period, but it did take all my money :(

Best of luck to all those who compete and if anyone on here is coming over and wants some pub recommendations, let me know! I shall cheer for the Brits, but ultimately if it all goes well that’s a win regardless of the medals :)

As for Westeros competitors- I’d like to suggest Bronn for taekwondo. I have a feeling he can fight very well with fists and feet. Hodor for weightlifiting. Osha is nimble and good at climbing, she’d be a great gymnast. With Grenn on their side, the night’s watch may do well in the rugby but they’ll have to wait for 2016. In the lightest weight category, I’d bet Shae would be surprisingly good at boxing. The equestrian events would of course be won by the Dothraki and the football by team small council, with their expert passing, Tyrion and Cersei both scoring frequently. Robert for the hammer throw. Naturally, Dany lights the flame.

I personally can’t wait for the gymnastics. It’s utterly amazing what those gymnasts do. I can not conceive how those girls can do tumbling routines on a 4 inch been. Both the male and female gymnasts really show just what the human body is capable of.

France but living in the UK.

Opening ceremony was awesome. Funny, innovative and beautiful. Lighting of the flame by several young athletes was a brilliant idea, although it still does not top the 1992 idea for me (an archer firing a flaming arrow to lit the whole thing).

I think quite a lot of them would probably be proficient in horse riding and fencing, though none as good as Arya and Syrio for the latter.

Tyrion and Jof would rock with a (cross)bow.

The Mountain would win most of the strength based sport while no one can really compete with Davos and the Greyjoys in the water.

Won’t be seeing any of the events sadly, I prefered to invest in a ticket to TitanCon :D

The olympics are great! We need more things in the world that brings people together in peace and friendship. I was touched to hear about the confetti that dropped from the sky-they said there was 7 billion bits of confetti, one for every person on the planet. How great is that?

Did anyone see the shot of the queen picking her fingernails and looking bored when great Britain came out?

Rowan Atkinson was amazing and James bond and the queen was brilliant.

However, the artic monkeys, who are they? British rock n roll is legendary, out of all the great acts they ended up with the artic monkeys? The who, def leppard, queen, rolling stones, David Bowie…c’mon! Where was David Bowie! “we can be heroes!”

First off it can’t be called the Olympics, we need the name of a mountain maybe in a multi-island culture, in Essos or Sotheros maybe.

I think Brienne would be a caber tosser or shot putter, Jon Snow on downhill slalom (think really steep slopes, like on the wall) or direwolf cross country riding. Then of course Strong Belwas for the Sumo wrestling. And finally Arya would be a great gymnast, Valar Dohaeris.

I’m not too excited for the games yet, not into swimming very much. Waiting for gymnastics.
I liked the opening ceremony very much, but I thought the giant Voldemort was pretty tacky. Rowan Atkinson and the cauldron rising were the best parts.

    Tomer Segal,

I doubt it’s to avoid offending the Arab world, as they’ve honored the Munich athletes several times in the past. That was the reason they gave for not doing it last night. I suspect there may be something more cynical in play, like them not wanting to add another sad moment when they were going to be honoring the victims of the 7/7 London attacks. (And the 7/7 moment wasn’t aired in the US, which is a whole other issue- blame the American TV network for that.)

Arya would kick butt in gymnastics. She’s got the whole balance thing down and is pretty nimble.

    Brienne: wrestling, weight lifting.

    Theon: archery

As you can probably tell from my username, I, too, am a Gator and will be cheering my fellow Gators on throughout the games. Argentina does not have representatives in all sports but I don´t care, I watch it anyway and enjoy it very very much. Loved the Olympics all my life (I was an athlete since an early age and for many years, so long ago). Few sports don´t interest me but my favorites are: swimming, basketball, women´s hockey, gymnastics and athletics (100 to 800 mts, long jump, high jump and pole vault). We lost the bronze medal today in women’s judo (48 kg) against Belgium (grrrr Tar Kidho, our Paulita was a really nice girl not taking advantage of your judoka´s shoulder). We did very bad at swimming (men and women). Good at tennis, classified at Rings (a great surprise) and at men´s rowing. Looking forward for basketball but don´t think we have a chance this time, many injured players (and most of them on the verge of retirement), but always a pleasure to watch our golden team once again, maybe last chance. The same goes for women’s hockey (grasscourt), eager to see our wonderful girls (although not at their best).
Westeros Olympics, I don´t know. They´re all a bunch of slugs for my taste but the Blackfish would be a great open-water or resistance swimmer I guess, we´ll see. There is a character I’m sure would suck at sports: Daenerys. Just a hunch, no reason. Sansa would be a synchronised swimmer, for sure, all pretty and elegant. And my man (oh well ok) Varys would be a gold medal rowing of course… he said it to Tyrion after all.

Stranger and Sandor would win the Eventing competition in the Westerosi Olympics, hands down. They obviously have the kahoonas to dominate cross country, and if the Westerosi version of dressage were closer to its military origins, with plenty of kicking and striking and biting the enemy, well, who could hold a candle to Stranger?

Shadowbaby will win every single competition by eliminating the competition alltogether! But it will have a hard time lifting anything. Also, not sure what will happen when it hits the water or how medals will be put around its neck. Jaqen H’ghar might nab quite a few medals by assassinating the winners and then taking their faces.
Winter Olympics will obviously be dominated by the white walkers.
The various sailing events: Iron Islanders will dominate those. Victarion for the gold
Littlefinger will probably win the Marathon considering how fast he covered thousands of leagues on his travels – hehe.

Jaqen would only have to assassinate the gold medal winner AFTER the event but BEFORE the medal ceremony so he could then steal their face to be on the medal stand and take the gold. A woman is fairly certain he would not want to have to actually do the events. : )

From Miami, FL. My boyfriend and I like tennis and jogging – he also plays golf and I dance. Favorite Olympic sports are: gymnastics, swimming, and track and field.

Here’s what some of the GoT ladies might excel in – Arya – gymnastics; Sansa – 400m track event; Brienne – rowing; and Yara Greyjoy – sailing and swimming. Beach volleyball could be: Team Westeros – Ros (as captain) with Armeca, Daisy and Shae (as team members) versus Team Essos – Dany (as captain) with Doreah, Irri and Jhiqui as her team. (That one was my boyfriend’s idea.)

If my boyfriend gets all that, then I get Jaqen H’ghar in swim trunks. As soon as I saw him in GoT, I went on his Tumblr site to get a look at him without all that knight’s armor. He has a swimmer’s body – a very nice swimmer’s body. I can see him in the Men’s 400m Butterfly event. His hand would touch the finish wall in 3 seconds and no one would even remember seeing him in the lap lane!

Some Sunday morning gossip – it’s being reported that Lena Headey (Cersei) has filed for divorce. So many celeb break-ups this year – Johnny and Vanessa, Tom and Katie, R-Patz and K-Stew, and now Lena. I think it’s the unbearable heat wave we are having in the States this year – too hot to snuggle. It was 95F (35C) yesterday in Miami and it’s been that hot for weeks. When exactly did they say Winter was supposed to be coming?

Good idea for the thread. I think it’s useful to have some place for us to all converse without it being about a specific Thrones topic. Maybe (hopefully) it will be less hostile!

I’m from America so I’m definitely pulling for the Americans when possible. However, I think the Olympics are something that I watch just for the thrill of the international competition. If another country wins, I’m generally happy for them. It’s just an incredible time and I do think most people try to just extend good-will to all the athletes and fans of their own country and others.

Definitely looking forward to gymnastics, as I’ve watched those since I was a little girl. I’ll never forget the American girls in Atlanta! I also enjoy the indoor volleyball, soccer/football, swimming, basketball, and some track/field. The best part about the Olympics though, is at any time you can just turn on the TV and find some sport to watch, and even if it’s something you wouldn’t usually be into, it feels more special and more exciting because it’s the Olympics.

I was only able to watch some of the Opening Ceremony, but what I saw was very impressive. I can’t believe they got the Queen to do the skit with Daniel Craig! I truly love London as a city, so I’m very happy for them to be hosting. It must be an incredible feeling for everyone who lives there. A common saying over here is that rugby is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen, and football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans!

Personally I think any footballer who rolls about crying over a twisted sock (then limps on the wrong leg once the penalty is awarded) should be made to train for a week with a top rugby squad!

Lady Brienne would make an excellent wrestler or shot put thrower. Prince Oberyn

throw. Arya and Theon would indeed make excellent archers but put to the test by

2004′s squad couldn’t play this year’s team within 20 points. This is the best team USA has fielded since the 1992 ‘Dream Team’. Still, anything can happen, but I don’t see it. Spain only beat Great Britain by 1 point today. They simply don’t have the scoring to hang with the Americans. Argentina is too old. France is without Noah and Tony Parker isn’t 100%. USA could field the 3 best teams in the world if they were allowed to.

Raisman was very good and this is in no way her fault. Screw the medals, what really tore us apart was seeing Catalina close to tears after the first event, and the crowd’s reaction in the second. It doesn’t matter, we love our girls dearly and I hope we’ll be able to give them a warm welcome back home, it’s the least we could do after all the joy they brought us over the years. Seems like every Olympics there are some dubious scores in gymnastics… and figure skating in the Winter Games.

Honestly, it’s just unfortunate that two of the biggest draws nad most beautiful competitions to watch in the Olympics are basically talent shows open to subjective scoring by judges. Gymnasts are amazing atheletes and deserve better treatment, but since it is an artistic competition there really is no better way to determine winners than judging marks…. Just part of the competition in the end sadly.

I think it has gotten better in the last few years since they left the “perfect 10″ scoring system behind, but it still has its bad days….

I suppose you can be right. I’ll have to rewatch it again with a cooler head. And I didn’t mean to imply it was Raiman’s fault at all! It was the judges that got me upset. But maybe I was in that mood when you get carried away with the team/player you like and when things go wrong you start shouting “Ref! Ref!” :)

Macha, it is really great to know they’ll be welcomed back like that. They certainly deserve it after all the incredible effort and dedication they put.

Oh, thanks for your wishes Macha but we knew were not going to count Olympic medals. It´s ok :). Still a chance with our women´s hockey team and I would like to say basketball but it´s just a dream. darquemode,
I used to love figure skating, however I haven’t watched the championships in over three years now so I’m a little out of touch with it anyway. Joshua Taylor,

The later calls that seemed favorable to the USA were sketchy at best, but technically correct. There were so many missed calls (affecting both teams)the Ref let go in the first half and second and then she ends the game calling things like those 2 late calls? Just a TERRIBLE performance and I hope that referee does not on the pitch in any way for the bronze and gold medal matches.

Actually that referee had a problem in general and she was not favoring either team in her calls. Tancredi should have been red carded a few minutes into the second half when she stomped on Carly Lloyd’s head. The ref missed it and in fact did not even call a foul much less a yellow card or the red it deserved. That would have shifted the entire game and every sketchy call after is a moot point really. Honestly, Tancredi should have had a second yellow card for persistant fouling prior to the point she stomped on Lloyd’s head.

Tancredi should not be in the Bronze medal game though and I hope FIFA takes action. That was just bush league, but at least not quite as bad as “Lady” Andrade sucker-puching Abby Wambach.

    andrea,

Haha! That would have been a sight to see! A sudden bike traffic jam full of happy faces!

I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. And then jumping up and down. Expect complains from the neighbours one flat down.

Now dreading and looking forward at the same time the final against Holland. Aaaaaaa *wrings hands*

    Vamos Leonas carajo!

Never been a fan of the pool swimming events, but the “open waters” marathon is so thrilling! I wish I had heard of it before. Cool stuff.

Anky van Grunsven + her horse Salinero. Poetry in motion. Watching them on the arena is like falling in love. I hope they win!

    Tír Airgid,

Who won? I had some people over and missed the end results, grrr….
But I caught van Grunsven and Salinero, they were wonderful, as always. This is not Salinero’s first Olympics, is it? I remember seeing them together in the past.

    Macha,

No, it’s not, she was Olympic champion the last 3 times I think, last two with Salinero. I also missed the winning performances. All of them! Grrr. Hopefully I can catch up later with them. Came back in time for the medals. So, Gold and Silver went to GB (Charlotte Dujardin was the champion) and silver went for another dutch, Adelinde Cornelissen. van Grunsven + Salinero were fourth last time I saw the chart. Don’t know their final possition. But that’s probably Salinero’s last olympic performance as it’s an old horse now. What a magnificent horse. *sobs quietly in the corner*

Vamoooooooooo! Did you see Carlita Rebecchi´s goal? a beauty.
Yes, Open water race is great. Cold water caused some problems to swimmers who are used to warmer waters (Brazil and Japan´s swimmer I think).
Well, not that much bike traffic because I live in a small city but it was fun.

Arkash: We (France) had our revenge on USA !!!!! At last !

    You have fantastic swimmers.

After getting screwed in the dressage today the brits are getting what they asked for in the hockey: total humiliation.

curious fact (and depressing): we don´t have replacement for these wonderful and corageous players, they had it all, was a happy coincidence that almost all of them belong to the same generation. There are basketball leagues of all kinds and ages throughout the country but not of that quality so, no future for us in Brazil 2016, don´t worry ;)

    Knurk,

Err we won the dressage yesterday. How is that getting screwed? Other than that yes you’re right it’s so awful to lose the hockey and have to settled for the most medals Britain has won in over 100 years. What a tragedy.

    Mike,

Woops wrong phrasing, I meant the Dutch got robbed. But ‘robbed’ may be the wrong word, after listening to a few more experts they say it could have gone either way and Dujardin was more lucky with a little home-advantage which is inevitable in a jury-sports. Anyway the hockeycarnage more or less made up for it.

Anyone here watches BMX? Today are the semis and the finals. Very cool to watch.
